A NOTE FROM PAM

This summer the J will offer our first-ever summer camp for adults, Camp Kef! You will have a choice of three one-week specialty camp sessions which will be held offsite. Camps will include golf, gardening, and ceramics. Full details can be found on page 8. We are also undertaking another exciting new project. In the very near future you will be able to read stories written by members of our very talented Legacy Writing Group on the J’s website. Each month we will add one story to the website and create an archive of stories. To access the stories, go to jccnv.org, and click on the Creative Writing tab under the Arts & Culture heading. To learn more about this group go to page 14. As I write this article, only a few spots remain on our overnight excursion to Chadds Ford and Philadelphia, PA to visit the Brandywine River Museum of Art, The Barnes Foundation, and Beth Sholom Congregation. This should be a wonderful trip. If you would like to participate you need to register right away. See page 5 for more information. We will be holding our annual AARP Driver Safety course in June. This is always a popular course and class size is limited; be sure to register early to ensure your spot. See page 5 for details. I want to thank the many volunteers who help the Adult Services Department throughout the year with ongoing mitzvah projects and programs. I especially want to thank those who recently volunteered or contributed food, money, or goods to support our annual partnership with Bethlehem Lutheran Church to provide shelter, food, and transportation funds to clients in the FACETS program for a week.

NV RIDES On Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 10am– 11:30am, NV Rides will hold an official launch event in the Adult Lounge at the J. The reception will engage many civic-minded people: community leaders, program partners, caregivers, clients and volunteers in Northern Virginia committed to helping seniors “age in place.” NV Rides supports senior adults aging in place in Fairfax County by increasing the capacity of community groups providing volunteer-driver programs. Free rides are available to older adults (50+) with no income eligibility requirements to help them get to medical appointments and necessary shopping trips. These rides allow non-driving seniors to continue living independently, and “age in place” in our community for as long as possible. Our current participating partners are: Mount Vernon at Home, Shepherd’s Center McLean – Arlington – Falls Church, Herndon Village Network and Reston Community Center. If you would like to learn more about NV Rides, please visit nvrides.org, or call Jennifer Kanarek at 703.537.3071. If you are on Facebook, please “Like” us so that you can receive the latest news and updates from the program.

LOOKING AHEAD Roméo et Juliette at the 2015 Castleton Festival

Sunday, July 5, depart the J 10:15am; return 6:45pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or 703.537.3095 The Castleton Festival, founded by world renowned conductor, violinist and composer Lorin Maazel, was launched in the summer of 2009 as a place where the future meets the present — the future stars of the opera and concert worlds are nurtured by its present stars. This year we will see a performance of Charles Gounod’s five-act opera Roméo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet) which will be performed at the Castleton Festival Theatre with a full cast and chorus. We will have excellent, indoor orchestra seats for this five act opera. Last year’s trip to the Festival, at which we saw Madama Butterfly, was absolutely fabulous and we expect this year’s to be equal in quality! Prior to the show, we will once again go to Griffin Tavern for a delicious three-course lunch (food choices will be given after registration) — absolutely loved by all last year. This should be a wonderful summer treat including opera, fine food, rural scenery and camaraderie! Fee: $130/$122 J member (includes bus transportation, orchestra seat, and fine lunch including tax and tip) Code: #6631 RSVP: Submit payment and registration form to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. Make check payable to JCCNV with “7/5” on memo line.

“Monticello is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson — designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than forty years — and its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world.” Our 45-minute tour of the mansion will include information on the Jewish connection at Monticello. There will be adequate time for “on your own” touring of the beautiful gardens and grounds, taking a guided outdoor tour (hourly) focusing on the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation, or for viewing the interesting exhibits in the museum galleries and/or shopping at the gift shop. Fee: $80/ $72 member (includes bus transportation; buffet lunch — includes two entrées, side dishes, dessert, non-alcoholic drink, tax and tip; guided tours at Monticello with special tour/presentation) Code: #6632 RSVP: Submit payment and registration to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. The Munich Olympics Massacre and the Israeli Wrath of God Campaign

Tuesday, May 5, 9:45am–11am Instructor: Lee R. Mandel, M.D., retired U.S. Navy physician, author, and historian On September 5, 1972, the face of the Olympic Games was changed forever. Eight terrorists from the Black September faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization penetrated the dormitory on the Munich Olympic compound, and killed two members of the Israeli Olympic team while they were sleeping. The terrorists killed the remaining nine Israeli Olympic athletes in a bungled German rescue attempt. While the Arab world celebrated, an enraged State of Israel struck back and began a sustained anti-terror campaign that would come to be known to historians as “Wrath of God.” Dr. Mandel, a retired U.S. Navy physician, author, and historian, will explore the origins of the Black September terrorist group, describe in detail the ordeal of the Israeli athletes in Munich, and present the real story of the Israeli retaliatory strategies and the people involved in the “Wrath of God” campaign. Fee: $18/ $12 J member Code: #6563

How do we treat our children, how do we treat our siblings, how do we balance our professional and personal lives, and how do we relate to our partners? Complicated questions, aren’t they? We will learn from their experiences what to do, and maybe what not to do! Fee: $36/ $24 J member Code: #6564

It was built in the 1820s and operated commercially until 1897. The United States Government acquired the mill as part of Rock Creek Park in 1892. Peirce Mill has recently been refurbished and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Note: The talk will be given on the main level. There are two flights of stairs on the tour, but what will be seen upstairs will be described in the talk. Wednesday, June 17, depart the J 10:15am; return 1:15pm Contact: Michele. Endick@jccnv.org, 703.537.3095 Clara Barton’s Missing Soldiers Office was originally rediscovered by Richard Lyons of the General Services Administration (GSA) in 1996, when the building was scheduled for demolition. Clara Barton lived here during and immediately after the Civil War. The building was also used for storage of battlefield supplies, and later as an office to handle correspondence concerning missing soldiers. The office’s purpose was to find or identify soldiers killed or missing in action. She responded to over 63,000 letters and by the time the office closed in 1867, she had identified the fate of over 22,000 men. We are very lucky to be able to arrange a private tour of this historic site administered by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD. Russian Jews in Israel: A Force for Change

Despite an iffy weather forecast, the JCCNV Greater Gainesville Active Adults turned out in droves on February 18 to hear Dana Kalishov, the JCCNV-JAFI Community Shlicha, talk about Russian Jews in Israel: A Force for Change. This Gainesville group comes from very hardy stock! Dana did a fabulous job of explaining the changes that have taken place in Israel as a result of the large wave of immigration of Russian Jews in the 1990s, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. With charts and graphs, video clips and slides, Dana gave us an insider’s view of where the Russian Jews settled in Israel, the challenges they faced, and their contributions and accomplishments. She spoke about the Russians’ efforts to preserve their culture and identity, through enterprises such as the Gesher Theater (designed to bridge Russian and Israeli culture), Russian language newspapers, and Russian TV channels, while at the same time working to fit into Israeli culture. Dana also discussed how Russian immigrants had changed the Israeli political landscape by forming their own political parties and aligning with other parties that shared their views. Throughout the evening, Dana shared personal anecdotes and experiences to illustrate her points, making her talk warm, engaging and very informative. Kol hakavod (great job), Dana!

PROGRAMS Israeli Film: Yes, Miss Commander!

(96 minutes, English subtitles) and Discussion Wednesday, May 6, 10:30am–12:30pm Presented by Dana Kalishov, Community Shlicha of Northern Virginia On an Israeli military base in Galilee, a unique program has been set up for youth with criminal, drug or disadvantaged backgrounds. Because these troubled youth, particularly those convicted of misdemeanor crimes, are not drafted into the army, they have difficulties overcoming their past and integrating into mainstream society. The 2009

documentary Yes, Miss Commander!, which was filmed over 100 days, follows young female officers as they turn these unlikely recruits into contributing members of both the IDF and Israeli society. Yes, Miss Commander! has been described as “a compelling drama full of laughter and tears, that presents a ‘fly on the wall’ technique, with no intervention or interpretation.” Following the movie, Dana will lead a discussion about the film. Having served in the IDF for more than three years as a military education officer and then as a First Lieutenant in the Navy, Dana has great insight as to the role of women in the military.

From Soup to Nut Cake: Jewish Foods and Their Origins

Wednesday, May 20, 10:30am–noon Presented by Michael Bloom, Chaplain of the Jewish War Veterans, author of several books, former federal official, teacher, cantor, and docent at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue. Why is chicken soup nicknamed “Jewish penicillin”? Are Boston baked beans a traditional Jewish food? How did the bagel become Americanized? What is “Jewish champagne”? Where did the knish come from? And what are the origins of farfel, horseradish, kugel, latkes, seltzer and Dr. Brown’s soda? Michael Bloom will answer these questions and more as he gives us a taste of the fascinating (and often strange) history of the cuisine we consider Jewish. He has presented multiple programs at the J and elsewhere in the area in recent years, and we are glad he can join us to talk about this fun and entertaining subject. You won’t want to miss out on this “delicious” program where there may even be a few samples to taste!

Wednesday, May 27 — No Program The Washington Monument You Don’t Know and Can’t See

Wednesday, June 3, 10:30am–noon Presented by Michael Kelley, National Park Ranger Once the tallest building in the world at over 555 feet, the Washington Monument commands respect. But there is so much more to this monument than meets the eye. This amazing concrete structure located on a 106-acre landscape contains countless examples of hidden history. Did you know that there is a “miniature” Washington Monument under the ground near its more famous and larger cousin, or that there is a tunnel hidden below the monument? Which American president used the monument grounds as his personal jogging path? What famous political father and son duo joined in monument grounds celebrations thirtyseven years apart? These are just a few of the fascinating questions that National Park Ranger Michael Kelly, a 22-year veteran of the National Park Service, will answer when he presents this special program, which is based on a two-hour talk that he usually gives at the monument itself. This is a great opportunity to gather some great “insider” information to impress your friends!

Even so, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences at the hotel, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. Nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, this film is entertaining and endearing. With the sequel — The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — now showing in local theatres, this is your chance to see the original! Bagels and cream cheese will be served after the movie. “Novel” Ideas behind Broadway Musicals

Wednesday, June 17, 10:30am-noon Presented by Steve Friedman, singer and lecturer, Himmelfarb University What do the musicals Wicked, Cats, My Fair Lady, Les Miserables, Dracula and Little Women have in common? If you answered that they all started as novels, not as plays, you deserve a front-row seat at our program about Broadway shows. Steve Friedman, a classically-trained singer, will not only entertain you with songs from these musicals, but he will help you better understand the history of musical theatre. Steve is an extremely passionate lecturer on this subject, in part because he has performed in musical roles in shows that include Camelot, Damn Yankees and Sweeney Todd. He lectures all over the Washington area in addition to performing and lecturing on several international cruise lines. Steve has performed at many venues, including the Kennedy Center, and he was a soloist for 35 years in local choirs. Who needs to go all the way to New York to enjoy a Broadway musical and fun when you can join us at Beth El!

ADULT OUTREACH PROGRAMS sophisticated public relations and press program, Hoover succeeded in creating a highly favorable public image of the FBI as the agency that “always gets its man.” At the same time, Hoover established programs that embraced illegal activities, including wiretapping, burglaries, harassment and violations of the civil liberties of individuals and organizations of which he disapproved, most notably Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. In addition, Hoover’s FBI developed investigatory files on a wide range of individuals, many of whom were not suspected of illegal activities. The files were used to help journalists and other friends of the FBI and to intimidate politicians and journalists who might be opposed to the FBI. Hoover’s FBI was used by some U.S. presidents to gather political intelligence against their opponents. This presentation will examine all sides of Hoover’s legacy.
