A Note from Pam

We need your feedback. The JCCNV is looking into the feasibility of purchasing equipment that would enable individuals to participate in our classes and programs from their home computer. Please let me know if this is something you think would be important for you or someone you know. A multitude of fantastic programs are planned over the next two months including an outing to the Jewish Museum of Maryland; several new Adult Learning Institute (ALI) classes; Paul Green, author of Forgotten Hostages, will be speaking at one of our outreach sites; Zachary Goldfarb, staff writer for the White House, will speak at the JCCNV; and Paula Cole, our Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Director, will be giving a presentation on how to turn daily activities into a fun and simple workout. Please take the time to review all of the upcoming programs, events, and classes listed in this issue of The Voice, and be sure to make your reservations, and mark your calendars! As you read The Voice, please take note of the businesses that advertise in the newsletter. Please consider patronizing our advertisers when you have a need for such services. Mann created a stage version of the courtroom drama for a limited, and much praised, Broadway run. The play is based on the true story of the war crime trials that followed WWII. The play raises important moral issues that remain relevant and controversial today. If possible, a short post-play discussion will be arranged for us by the theatre. After the play we will go as a group to a restaurant for an early dinner – TBA. Fee: $36/ $31 JCCNV member (includes bus transportation and matinee ticket to play.) Madama Butterfly at the 2014 Castleton Festival Sunday, July 20, depart JCCNV 10:15am; return 6:45pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 The Castleton Festival, launched in the summer of 2009, is a place where the future meets the present — the future stars of the opera and concert worlds are nurtured by its present stars, including the world-renowned Lorin Maazel. The festival has become one of the world’s fastest growing international music festivals and training grounds for young artists — more than 3,000 young people have been touched by the festival. Madama Butterfly is set in Japan at the start of the

20th century, and tells the tale of Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton of the United States Navy and 15-year-old Cio-Cio-San, a former geisha nicknamed “Madam Butterfly.” Pinkerton proposes to her but tells colleagues that he is simply touring the world in search of pleasure. He marries Cio-Cio-San, but to him it is a marriage of convenience. The innocent young woman believes that her marriage is real and allows herself to fall deeply in love. After Pinkerton returns with his ship to America, to marry a “real wife,” Cio-Cio-San gives birth to Pinkerton’s child “Dolore” (Trouble). When Pinkerton finally returns two years later, Cio-Cio-San learns that he has married an American woman, Kate, who has come with him to Japan. We are quite fortunate to have excellent, indoor orchestra seats for this full two-and-a-half hour opera! Prior to the show, we will go to local Griffin Tavern for a delicious 3-course lunch (food choices will be given after registration). This should be a wonderful summer treat including opera, fine food, rural scenery and camaraderie! Fee: $123/ $115 JCCNV member (includes bus transportation, orchestra seat at matinee performance and fine lunch including tax and tip) Code: #5178 RSVP: Submit payment and registration form to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. Make check payable to JCCNV with “7/20” on memo line.

Fall 2014 Thursday at the JCCNV Kick-Off Event Documentary: No Place on Earth with pre-film presentation by Cave Explorer, Chris Nicola Thursday, September 18, noon–2:45pm Noon: Lunch (bring dairy or parve/meatless), special dessert buffet provided 12:45pm: Program Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org or (703) 537-3095 Speaker sponsored by Classic Nurses Services, Inc. Mr. Nicola is a cave explorer who came across artifacts of daily living in a system of caves in Ukraine. His presentation here at the JCCNV will describe this caving experience; his book, The Secret of Priest’s Grotto; and his involvement in the making of the documentary, “No Place on Earth.” This unbelievable film describes how in 1942, five Jewish families in Ukraine — 38 men, women and children — descended into caves to hide from pursuing Nazis and lived in near-total darkness for 500 days. It wasn’t until 1993, when Chris Nicola was mapping out the largest cave system in Ukraine, that evidence was first discovered of this amazing story, the longest

uninterrupted underground survival ever recorded. This harrowing story of families living in near-total darkness in two cold, damp caves was captured in this 2013 documentary by filmmaker Janet Tobias. The film also features interviews with survivors and their descendants, now living mainly in New York City and Montreal, and includes a segment in which the director brings some of the survivors, the oldest of whom is in his 90s, back into the caves.

Chapters in German Art History: German Impressionism and The Art of Hitler’s Third Reich Mondays, April 28 and May 5 (2 classes) 9:45am–11am Instructor: Marion Deshmukh, Robert T. Hawkes Professor of History, George Mason University Although developed in France and most often associated with French artists, Impressionism also took hold in Germany starting around the 1890s. This lesser-known aspect of German art history was introduced by German Jewish painter Max Liebermann, along with Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt. Marion Deshmukh, a distinguished George Mason University history professor, will present a richly-illustrated lecture contextualizing these three major German Impressionist artists within the history of Imperial Germany. In her second lecture, Professor Deshmukh will discuss the art of Hitler’s Third Reich. Once Hitler and the Nazis came to power in 1933, the vibrant, modernist culture of the 1920s was replaced by an art of realism and monumentality. Hitler thought himself an artist and specifically forbade artists whose styles he abhorred from exhibiting or even painting. Professor Deshmukh will outline the art approved, commissioned and exhibited by the Nazis. She will also discuss the art banned, burned and banished — culminating in the infamous “Degenerate Art Exhibition” held in Munich in 1937. Fee: $24/ $18 JCCNV member Code: #4903

The “Thursday at the JCCNV” attendees and other interested adults are invited to attend the JCCNV outreach program held at Beth El Hebrew Congregation for this very interesting program! Along with 125 of his colleagues, Paul Green faced threats of beheading and death from the Hanafi Muslim terrorists who violently captured the B’nai B’rith building on March 9, 1977. Men and women were shot, stabbed, beaten and assaulted as the attack gained momentum. Across town, in a second attack, the future mayor of Washington, Marion Barry, almost died from a shotgun pellet near his heart and a young reporter, Maurice Williams, was killed. A third location, The Islamic Center of Washington, was also attacked with multiple hostages taken. Washington’s first major terrorist incident, with its anti-Semitic vitriol and explosiveness, left more than 150 lives hanging in the balance. With Washington in chaos, the future of the hostages was in jeopardy. It was the first time local and federal law enforcement authorities faced such a terror attack in our nation’s capital. When three Muslim ambassadors became involved in the rush to try and find a way to save the hostages’ lives, it became an international event. But for the hostages, it was 40 hours of terror, pain, dismay, enlightenment and hope. Join us as Paul shares with us his first-hand account of what happened that fateful afternoon in March when

Mary & Max (2008, 92 minutes) Special Screening rescheduled from February Thursday, May 15, noon–2:30pm, JCCNV Noon: Lunch (bring dairy or parve/meatless) 12:30pm: Program After a short introductory talk by a representative of the JCCNV Special Needs Department, we will watch the film Mary and Max, one of the featured films of the 2013 ReelAbilities: Greater DC Disabilities Film Festival. “A claymated feature film this is a tale of pen-friendship between two very different people; Mary Dinkle, a chubby lonely eight year old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44 year old, obese, Jewish man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in the chaos of New York. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary and Max’s friendship survives much more than the average diet of life’s ups and downs. Mary & Max is innocent but not naïve, as it takes us on a journey that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies come from, obesity, kleptomania, sexual difference, trust, copulating dogs, religious difference, agoraphobia and much, much more.” If desired, there will be a post-film discussion. Please show your support of our Special Needs Department by attending this viewing of a very special movie! Coffee, tea, and dessert provided. Fee: $3/ Free JCCNV member No RSVP — Just come!

Tours of the Jewish Museum of Maryland and Ladew Topiary Gardens

Looking Ahead…

Thursday, June 26, depart JCCNV 9:15am; return 6:45pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 Join us on a tour of The Jewish Museum of Maryland, a museum of regional Jewish history, culture and community, located in downtown Baltimore. We’ll uncover the roots of local Jewish history in a guided tour of the museum’s landmark historic sites — the Lloyd Street Synagogue, built in 1845, now the nation’s third oldest surviving synagogue and B’nai Israel Synagogue, built in 1876 and still home to a vibrant congregation.

Thursday, July 10, depart JCCNV 9am; return approx. 7:30pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 Join us for a trip via luxury bus to wonderful Winterthur in Delaware! Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is an estate housing one of the most important collections of Americana in the United States of America. It was the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969), a renowned antiques collector and horticulturist. Until recently, it was known as the “Henry Francis DuPont Winterthur Museum.”

Also, on view in the exhibition gallery, will be Project Mah Jongg. This exhibit will be exploring the traditions, history, and meaning of the game of mah jongg in Jewish-American culture with memories shared by women who gather together to play the Chinese game that became a JewishAmerican tradition. After a lovely lunch (included in the trip fee) in the Ladew Café, we will have a guided garden tour at Ladew Topiary. Harvey S. Ladew (1887–1976) was a traveler, artist, foxhunter and creator of an extraordinary garden. Born into privilege in New York City, Harvey Ladew had boyhood drawing lessons from curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1929, Harvey Ladew purchased the 200+ acre Pleasant Valley Farm in rural Maryland. During the 1930s Ladew added wings to the original house and renovated outbuildings before beginning work on the gardens. Then, with the help of local farmers, he carved 22 acres of gardens out of fields previously used for crops and livestock and set to work transforming the farm into what the Garden Club of America describes as “the most outstanding topiary garden in America.” Late in life, Ladew was determined to find a way of preserving his creation for all to enjoy. The result is Ladew Topiary Gardens, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is “to maintain and promote the gardens, house and facilities in keeping with the creative spirit of Harvey S. Ladew for the public benefit and for educational, scientific and cultural pursuits.” Ladew Topiary Gardens opened to the public in 1971. Join us on this interesting, varied summer excursion! Fee: $58/ $50 JCCNV member (includes bus transportation, guided tour at the Jewish Museum, guided garden tour at Ladew Topiary, lunch in the café at Ladew Topiary — choices to be given after registration). Code: #5179 RSVP: Submit payment and registration form to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. Make check payable to JCCNV with “6/26” on memo line.

Trip to Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library

In the early 20th century, H. F. du Pont and his father designed Winterthur in the spirit of 18th- and 19th-century European country houses. The younger du Pont added to the home many times thereafter, increasing its number of rooms by nearly six fold. After he established the main building as a public museum in 1951, he moved to a smaller building on the estate. The Winterthur Library includes more than 87,000 volumes and a huge number of manuscripts and images, mostly related to American history, decorative arts, and architecture. In the 1990s, more informal museum galleries were opened in a new building adjacent to the main house featuring special rotating and permanent exhibits. Our exciting trip includes: First we will enjoy lunch in the Garden Café — everyone will receive a prepaid voucher to pick a lunch they desire including an entrée, drink and dessert! After lunch, our visit begins with a 25-minute tram tour of the elegant gardens. Winterthur’s 1,000 acres encompass rolling hills, streams, meadows, and forests. Founder Henry Francis du Pont selected the choicest plants from around the world to enhance the natural setting, arranging them in lyrical color combinations and carefully orchestrating a succession of bloom from late January to November. A one-hour tour of the magnificent house follows the tram tour. We will see exquisite spaces in which Henry Francis du Pont entertained family and friends in grand style. The 175 rooms, many of them with historical architecture, are furnished with his outstanding collection of antiques and objects added since his death. In the Galleries, you can explore unique displays crafted by Winterthur curators with selections from the Winterthur’s unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects — decorative and fine arts made or used in America from 1630 to 1860. The collection is organized in several main

categories — ceramics, glass, furniture, metalwork, paintings and prints, and textiles and needlework. Famous for its American artwork, the collection is amplified with objects from other regions of the world, illustrating the active role America played in the international market. Winterthur’s founder formed the original collection for the museum and added to it until his death in 1969. For Downton Abbey® fans, included in your fee is a timed ticket to the special exhibition Costumes of Downton Abbey®, an original exhibition of exquisite designs from the award-winning television series. Forty historically inspired costumes will be displayed and supplemented by photographs and vignettes inspired by the fictional program and by real life at Winterthur. Visitors will have a chance to step into and experience the world of Downton Abbey® and the contrasting world of Winterthur founder Henry Francis du Pont and his contemporaries in the first half of the 20th century. On our trip back to Fairfax, we will stop for a relatively quick “on your own” dinner — restaurant TBD. Fee: $84/ $76 JCCNV member (includes: luxury bus, lunch voucher, garden tram tour, house tour and entry to the galleries including the Downton Abbey® exhibit). Dinner is on your own on return trip. Code: #5180 RSVP: By June 26, submit payment and registration form to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. Make check payable to JCCNV with “7/10” on memo line.

The Kreeger Museum Wednesday, May 28, depart JCCNV 10:15am; return 1:15pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 In 1959, Mr. and Mrs. David Kreeger began to amass a formidable collection of modern art. For the next fifteen years, they assembled most of the museum’s holdings. The collection represents a shared vision as they both agreed on every piece in the museum. As David Kreeger said “I never bought art as an investment. I bought it for love and I was lucky. Art that embodies the creative spirit of men transcends the value of money.” At first glance the collection may seem eclectic, but the astute viewer will note that the unifying elements are color and texture. There is also a musical quality to many of the works. The Kreegers wove music, painting, sculpture and architecture into the tapestry of their lives. The museum, whose mission is to enhance the understanding

“Chailights”

The JCCNV/Greater Gainesville Area Active Adults is our newest outreach group, and they made a fine showing on Wednesday evening, February 19 for a discussion of current developments in Israel and the Middle East. What a nice group of people! The dinner conversation at Bertucci’s prior to the program was fun and lively as group members reconnected with old friends and got acquainted with new ones in the Greater Gainesville area. Bob Budoff, a board member of the Jewish Community Relations Council, vice president of Temple B’nai Shalom in Fairfax Station, founder of the temple’s Israel committee, and founder/leader of the IsraelTalk discussion group, was the speaker as the group enjoyed their dessert and coffee. He addressed

Israel’s relationships with its neighbors, including the threat of a nuclear Iran, progress of the Israel-Palestinian peace negotiations, the Syrian conflict, and developments regarding Egypt, Hezbollah and Hamas. The group was knowledgeable, well-informed, and actively participated in a stimulating discussion of the issues. There were great questions and insightful comments. The Gainesville Active Adults really showed their stuff!

Washington’s First Major Terrorist Attack: A Personal Account of the B’nai B’rith Hostage Takeover Wednesday, May 7, 10:30–noon Presented by Paul Green, author, Forgotten Hostages Along with 125 of his colleagues, Paul faced threats of beheading and death from the Hanafi Muslim terrorists who violently captured the B’nai B’rith building on March 9, 1977. When three Muslim ambassadors became involved in the rush to try and find a way to save the hostages lives, it became an international event. For the hostages, it was 40 hours of terror, pain, dismay, enlightenment and hope. Join us as Paul, who at the time was an executive at B’nai B’rith International, shares with us his first-hand account of this harrowing experience. He will be selling his book, Forgotten Hostages, after the

Film, Calendar Girls Wednesday, June 25, 10:30am–noon Based on a true story, eleven middle-aged Englishwomen pose nude for their annual Women’s Institute calendar as a fund-raiser for the local hospital. Chris (Helen Mirren) gets the idea to raise money for the hospital after Annie’s (Julie Walters) husband dies of leukemia. The calendar is a little different in that each woman is posing behind a different task that the Women’s Institute teaches their members, such as making bread rolls, knitting, planting flowers, and playing the piano. Before they know it, the calendar is a big hit in England with tremendous sales. Eventually, they are flown to America to be interviewed by Jay Leno. The calendar has made almost a million dollars for the local hospital. Come join us as we enjoy this wonderful 2003 British comedy.

Looking Ahead… Who Wants a Corned Beef Sandwich with a Side of Ratner? Wednesday, July 9; depart Beth El at 11am; return approximately 3pm Are you ready for a good, authentic corned beef or pastrami sandwich? If so, then join us for a trip to the newly-opened Attman’s Deli. After getting its start on Baltimore’s Corned Beef Row in 1915, it made a historic move and opened a second location in Potomac in July 2013. The menu at this location offers the same legendary corned beef, pastrami and other deli specialties. And who can resist those half-sour and full-sour pickles! After lunch, we will take a quick ride over to the Ratner Museum, one of only three museums in the world devoted to portraying biblical characters. The 7,000-square-foot museum features sculptures, paintings, tapestries and children’s books depicting characters and stories of the Hebrew Bible, all in a setting where visitors, especially kids, are encouraged to touch the artwork and read the books, even rare editions. “The Bible is my passion, and the museum is Dennis’s and my gift to the community,” said Phillip Ratner, 64, an internationally known artist whose works are on display at the U.S. Supreme Court, the National Zoo, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island national monuments and other locations around the world. Even if you have been to the museum in the past, the exhibits are always changing. Fee: $10/ $8 JCCNV or synagogue member (lunch is on your own) RSVP: Shelly.Rosenstein@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3062

Educational Seminar on Hearing Loss and Free Hearing Screenings Tuesday, May 27, 10:30am–noon Presented by Mark Gustina, M.S., CCC-A, Audiologist with Cosmetic Hearing Solutions, a HearUSA Hearing Care Provider for AARP Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions affecting older adults, but that doesn’t mean we should just accept it as a normal part of aging. Untreated hearing loss can have many serious consequences, such as social isolation, depression and increased risk to personal safety (for example, if you can’t hear a warning car horn). Untreated hearing loss has also been associated with diminished cognitive functioning and dementia. Attend this seminar to learn more about hearing loss and new treatment options and technologies that can help improve your quality of life (or that of someone you care about!). Free hearing screenings will also be provided. Come find out what you may be missing! RSVP: Sheila.Budoff@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3068

Frances Perkins — A Champion for Social Justice Tuesday, June 24, 10:30am–noon Presented by Mary Lipsey, member of the Fairfax County History Commission, president of the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association, volunteer docent for the National Museum of American History and the National Archives, and former secondary school history teacher Frances Perkins, the first woman in U.S. history to be appointed to a Cabinet-level position, was truly a remarkable person. As Secretary of Labor and throughout her professional career, she tirelessly advocated for the rights of workers and the poor, bringing about pioneering reforms which today we take largely for granted. As FDR’s Secretary of Labor from 1933-1945, Frances Perkins was a key force behind the New Deal’s governmental programs in the areas of unemployment relief, minimum wages, maximum hours, abolition of child labor, safety in the workplace, social security, and more. She also was a strong advocate for several changes in immigration policies to allow more Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany to come to the U.S. She achieved these successes at a time when Congress and the federal government were overwhelmingly male bastions, wholly unaccustomed to dealing with a woman in such a politically powerful role. Our presenter, Mary Lipsey, is a local treasure, exceptionally knowledgeable about U.S. and Virginia history, and very gifted at bringing historical figures to life.
