A Note from Pam Inserterd in this issue of The Voice you will find our Annual Survey for adult program participants. Conducting this survey of our participants fulfills one of the requirements for applying for the grants that enable us to continue to provide quality programs and services throughout the year. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete and return the questionnaire. Once again an amazing array of programs and trips has been planned for the summer, including many outings to various places of interest. Please take your time while reviewing the many exciting program and event choices and be sure to mark your calendars. This fall, we are pleased to announce the return of the Adult Learning Institute (ALI), and we are also excited to offer a new, professionally facilitated, support group for adults. See page 5 for full details. I want to thank both Rabbi Amy Perlin of Temple B’nai Shalom, for leading our Annual Passover Seder for Adults 55+, and Iren Fertel of Chabad Lubavitch of Northern Virginia, for leading the Passover Seder for our New American group. Registration Policy In order to register for a trip, program, class or event, all participants — members and nonmembers alike — must fill out a registration form (found on page 19) and include the appropriate registration code number and JCCNV membership number (if applicable). Please attach payment to the completed registration form and submit to the JCCNV in person at the front desk, or mail to the JCCNV. Be sure to write the staff member’s name who is associated with the event on the envelope, along with the program, trip or class name.
Trip Policies • Please be aware that all departure and return times listed are an approximation and subject to change. • No refunds will be granted for any trip or program that requires tickets, meal reservations or chartered transportation unless we are able to fill your reserved space. • No rest stops are planned for trips that require two hours or less driving time. • Once at your destination, you will be responsible for meeting the bus at the time and place you are told. The bus will not wait for you if you are late. If you miss the bus, you are responsible for your own transportation home, and the JCCNV will not be liable.

Mr. Nicola is a cave explorer who came across artifacts of daily living in a system of caves in Ukraine. His presentation here at the JCCNV will describe this caving experience; his book, The Secret of Priest’s Grotto; and his involvement in the making of the documentary, “No Place on Earth.” This unbelievable film describes how in 1942, five Jewish families in Ukraine — 38 men, women and children — descended into caves to hide from pursuing Nazis and lived in near-total darkness for 500 days. It wasn’t until 1993, when Chris Nicola was mapping out the largest cave system in Ukraine, that evidence was first discovered of this amazing story, the longest uninterrupted underground survival ever recorded. This harrowing story of families living in near-total darkness in two cold, damp caves was captured in this 2013 documentary by filmmaker Janet Tobias. The film also features interviews with survivors and their descendants, now living mainly in New York City and Montreal, and includes a segment in which the director brings some of the survivors, the oldest of whom is in his 90s, back into the caves. Don’t miss this unbelievable story of courage and perseverance told by Mr. Nicola along with this very special documentary film. The Castleton Festival, launched in the summer of 2009, is a place where the future meets the present — the future stars of the opera and concert worlds are nurtured by its present stars, including the world-renowned Lorin Maazel. “Madama Butterfly is set in Japan at the start of the 20th century, and tells the tale of Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton of the United States Navy and 15-year-old Cio-Cio-San, a former geisha nicknamed “Madam Butterfly.” “Pinkerton proposes to her but tells colleagues that he is simply touring the world in search of pleasure. He marries Cio-Cio-San, but to him it is a marriage of convenience. The innocent young woman believes that her marriage is real and allows herself to fall deeply in love. After Pinkerton returns with his ship to America, to marry a “real wife,” Cio-Cio-San gives birth to Pinkerton’s child “Dolore” (Trouble). “When Pinkerton finally returns two years later, CioCio-San learns that he has married an American woman, Kate, who has come with him to Japan.” — Castleton Festival website We are quite fortunate to have excellent, indoor orchestra seats for this full two-and-a-half hour opera! Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is an estate housing one of the most important collections of Americana in the United States of America. It was the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969), a renowned antiques collector and horticulturist.
In the early 20th century, H. F. du Pont and his father designed Winterthur in the spirit of 18th- and 19thcentury European country houses. The younger du Pont added to the home many times thereafter, increasing its number of rooms by nearly six fold. After he established the main building as a public museum in 1951, he moved to a smaller building on the estate. The Winterthur Library includes more than 87,000 volumes and a huge number of manuscripts and images, mostly related to American history, decorative arts and architecture. In the 1990s, more informal museum galleries were opened in a new building adjacent to the main house featuring special rotating and permanent exhibits. We will see exquisite spaces in which Henry Francis du Pont entertained family and friends in grand style. The 175 rooms, many of them with historical architecture, are furnished with his outstanding collection of antiques and objects added since his death. • In the Galleries, you can explore unique displays crafted by Winterthur curators with selections from Winterthur’s unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects — decorative and fine arts made or used in America from 1630 to 1860. Famous for its American artwork, the collection is amplified with objects from other regions of the world, illustrating the active role America played in the international market. • For Downton Abbey® fans, included in your fee is a timed ticket to the special exhibition Costumes of Downton Abbey®, an original exhibition of exquisite designs from the award-winning television series. When we disembark, we will be picked up by the Fredericksburg Trolley bus for a 75-minute entertaining and informative tour of the historic district and Fredericksburg battlefield. Summer Ride on a Vintage Trolley at the National Capital Trolley Museum Thursday, August 7, depart JCCNV 9:45am; return 4pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 The National Capital Trolley Museum Visitor Center collects and preserves artifacts of electrical street railways and interprets their impact upon the development of communities in the Washington DC region. Some of our oldest communities were actually the first suburbs developed by entrepreneurs who not only sold the land for the homes but built the street car lines to get people and goods back and forth. We will take a vintage trolley/street car ride through Northwest Branch Park, view a film, and have a tour of the trolley storage area and museum. Afterwards, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (TBD) — separate charge — order from menu. Escape the Summer Heat — Explore “Cool” Luray Caverns Thursday, August 21, depart JCCNV 9:45am; return 5:30pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 You certainly will escape the summer heat by visiting Luray Caverns! “Since discovery in 1878 by a tinsmith and a local photographer, visitors by the millions have made Luray Caverns the most popular cave in Eastern America. A one-hour tour will lead you through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high, towering columns, and crystal-clear pools. You will experience the sounds of the world’s largest musical instrument, The Great Stalacpipe Organ — with unique, beautiful tones of concert quality from the surrounding stalactite formations.” After our visit at the caverns, we will enjoy a fine lunch buffet (included in your trip fee) at the Mimslyn Inn in quaint, historic downtown Luray. After lunch we will visit the Car and Carriage Caravan, which displays milestones in transportation, including restored cars, carriages, coaches and costumes, dating from 1725 to 1941. Included in the exhibition are watercolor studies quickly executed to capture a momentary impression as well as tempera paintings... Tour Historic Huntley Wednesday, August 27, depart JCCNV 10:15pm; return 1pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, or (703) 537-3095 Thomson Francis Mason was the mayor of Alexandria, Virginia from 1827–1830 and a grandson of George Mason, author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Thomson Mason used this federal period house, built for him in 1825, as a summer retreat. This 19th century architectural gem is on the National Register of Historic Places, the Virginia Landmarks Register and the Fairfax County Inventory of Historic Sites — the Park Authority obtained the house and its surrounding 2.5 acres in 1989. Over the years, Historic Huntley was used as a summer retreat, grain farm, encampment for the troops of the 3rd Michigan Infantry during the Civil War and was eventually converted to a dairy farm. It has changed ownership several times. The renovation got a boost from a grant from the Save America’s Treasures program, created by the National Park Service to preserve significant historic properties and collections. “Chailights” What a wonderful morning we had on March 26th, celebrating the 100th birthday of Bertha Shostak, our loyal Beth El outreach group member. Bertha has been coming to this group for more than 10 years, and she continues to grace us with her presence each week. Sharp as a tack, beautiful, funny and inspiring — this is our Bertha. The festivities began with a light brunch, which included bagels and whitefish, followed by Beth El’s Rabbi Brett Isserow bestowing a blessing on Bertha for many more years of good health. Group leader Shelly Rosenstein then attempted to sum up Bertha’s remarkable 100 years in five minutes — not an easy feat as Bertha has lived a very colorful and full life. The Tallwood Trio, a group of senior musicians, then serenaded us with hits from the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s. The celebration concluded with a delicious cake decorated with the words “We Love Our Bertha” — and everyone truly does!

Did you know that only one-tenth of one percent of DNA differs from one person to the next? Scientists can use

Come join us as we take a fascinating look at how forensic DNA analysis works, and how it is being used as a tool to convict criminals and exonerate the innocent. George will also explain how DNA helps to identify the victims of mass disasters, and some of the other implications it has for today’s justice system and society. George has worked on DNA cases that ranged from paternity issues to capital murder, in addition to aiding in the identification of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He currently works at the NIH developing forensic DNA analysis software and a database of genetic mutations that cause human disease. Don’t miss out on this fascinating talk!

Film, Orchestra of Exiles Wednesday, August 20, 10:30am–12:30pm “Richly researched and partly told by some of today’s topflight musicians, Orchestra of Exiles aspires to a level of primary research that other historical documentaries could take a page from” — The New York Times. Orchestra of Exiles is a film about virtuoso Bronislaw Huberman’s heroic rescue of many of Europe’s greatest musicians. When Hitler came to power in the 1930s, he began firing Jewish musicians all over Europe. Huberman stood up to Nazi tyranny and devised a plan to bring Jewish musicians and their families to Palestine to form the Palestine Symphony Orchestra (later to become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra) and ensure that the Nazi threat would not destroy the culture of the Jewish people. Almost 1,000 Jewish lives were saved by Huberman and his supporters, who included Arturo Toscanini and Albert Einstein. The film includes interviews with Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta and Joshua Bell along with wonderful musical performances. This 2012 documentary has been shown at film festivals throughout the country. After the film, we will bring our summer to a close as we enjoy bagels and cream cheese, along with delicious ice cream sundaes. “The King & I” at the Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre and Lunch in Old Town Winchester Wednesday, July 16, depart Great Gatherings parking lot, 13177 Gateway Center Drive, Gainesville, VA, 10:30am; return 5:45pm Whether you first saw Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, The King & I, on Broadway, in the movies or in a local theater production, this all-time favorite is bound to please. The story takes place in Bangkok, Thailand (formerly Siam) in the early 1860s. Anna, a proper British widow, is hired to tutor the King of Siam’s many children. East meets West, the two cultures clash, and both Anna and the King stubbornly insist on their own way. Eventually, however, they grow to understand and respect each other. The musical score is delightful, filled with beloved songs such as “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Getting to Know You,” and “Shall We Dance.” (Yes, this is where those songs are from!) Sculpt and Shape Mondays, Wednesdays, 8:30am–9:15am This class uses hand-weights, dyna-tubes and exercise bars to provide upper and lower body contouring and shaping.
Senior Strength Training (Adv.) Mondays, Wednesdays, 10am–11am; Thursdays, 10:30am–11:30am This class involves standing cardio exercises, chair or standing functional strength training and flexibility for adults 65+.
Tai Chi Tuesdays, 10:45am–11:30am This is a Chinese martial art primarily practiced for its health benefits, including reducing tension and stress. Tai chi emphasizes complete relaxation and is essentially a form of meditation.

JCCNV Specialized Fitness and Wellness Packages Balance & Flexibility Training JCCNV members only Maintaining your balance and flexibility is important for almost all physical activities. Current research shows that the ability to balance may begin to diminish as early as 30 years old. Targeting the lower body and core muscles, the balance and flexibility training program utilizes a combination of strength training, body weight exercises, balance tools, and stretches to improve overall balance, flexibility, and range of motion. Training includes using tools like the BOSU ball, stability ball, foam roller, stretch bands and more. All packages include ten, 30-minute sessions. Specialized Fitness Adults 65+ Getting Fit
ADULT DEPARTMENT DONATIONS
JCCNV members only Designed for adults 65+ that have little fitness knowledge or are new to exercise, this program allows participants to work with a certified fitness coach on increasing aerobic capacity, muscular strength and overall flexibility. This program is perfect for anyone that wants to get more comfortable using the fitness room equipment on their own and is interested in developing an exercise routine that they can use in the fitness center. Dance Intermediate Line Dance Instructor: Susan Attas Zuckerman Join a new session of an ongoing line dance class, tailored to ages 40s–70s. Dance to a variety of music, from rock to country western to waltz. Lots of fun and good exercise! No partners needed because we dance in lines!
