There will be 23 buildings open in 2022, along with free guided walks around some of the town’s best locations. There are fewer locations open than in the past as some owners are still understandably wary of Covid. The Ipswich Society is grateful to all concerned for their participation.

New venues this year include the newly restored 4, College Street by Ipswich Waterfront. There will be limited disabled access to this Grade II listed building. “The Hold” (Suffolk Records Office) on Fore Street will also be open with guides for the first time. You won’t go hungry; several buildings have refreshments on offer. In addition, there are independent cafes all around the town centre, well worth a visit or you could pack a picnic and make a day of it in one of our beautiful Green Flag

The story of Little Red

Recently appointed Dr Amy Jane Barnes comments, “The Mill has an 850 year history over which time it has had many owners (including Henry V), fallen into disrepair and been renovated more than once. Hundreds of local people have been involved in running it, volunteering, milling, re-building, fundraising, supporting and visiting. We are keen to hear stories from anyone involved. These tales can be any length, true or rumour, first or second hand – anything essentially that will help define the Mill’s history for visitors.” Collecting, recording and displaying the Mill’s collection will take an effort and The Tide Mill are also seeking two volunteers to assist with the work, specifically a Volunteer Collections Care Assistant and a Volunteer Research Assistant.

THE POWER OF STORIES

12

The record-breaking, award-winning Power of Stories –an exhibition with Marvel Studios’ 2018 ground-breaking blockbuster Black Panther movie at its heart – has been reimagined for the Food Museum in Stowmarket, Suffolk, in collaboration with members of Suffolk’s Black community.

A display case houses items on loan from the community, including a traditional kitchen prayer, a dutch pot and Lovers Rock records which are connected to childhood memories of Caribbean Sunday lunches. All items serve as engaging conversation starters and enable visitors to learn about real-life stories, which have previously gone untold. Community attendants at the museum will answer questions and share their own cultural stories. They were recruited in partnership with the Food Museum and Aspire Black Suffolk. The Food Museum is the third leg of the Power of Stories’ tour of museums across Suffolk. The exhibition first opened at Ipswich’s Christchurch Mansion in 2021 - where it broke footfall records despite Covid restrictions, and attracted the Ipswich Museum’s most ever diverse audience. The Colchester + Ipswich Museum exhibition was crowned Temporary Exhibition of the Year at the 2022 Museum and Heritage Awards, widely regarded as the ‘Oscars of the museums Supportedworld’. by the Association for Suffolk Museums and Arts Council England, each museum is tailoring the exhibition to suit their own venue space, culture and theme. Dining With Heroes will be at the Food Museum until Sunday 9th PowerOctober.ofStories will then visit the world-renowned cultural institution, Britten Pears Arts at Snape Maltings in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, from October 2022 to January 2023. Entry to the Food Museum costs £12 for adults, concession (£10), children (ages 4-16) £8, and children (under 4) are free. Admission to the exhibition is included.

The Oscar-winning costumes, worn by Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright in the ground-breaking 2018 film, promise to impress all – and astonish Marvel fans. They cannot be seen anywhere else in the UK. The costumes are complemented by a display of local stories sourced from the African Caribbean community. Narratives about local Black ‘heroes’ are placed on plates on a dining table, laid out as if ready for a meal. The narrative for T’Challa sits at the head of the table. All local heroes have made important contributions to Suffolk – be it through food, community or creativity – and can be discovered at this unique exhibition.

The Family Meadow also returns this year bigger and better with activities for all ages. Grow Cook Eat, for example, will be hosting classes for young people on the hour, every hour, on how to cultivate, grow, cook and eat your own food, while the festival’s youngest attendees can explore the miniature farm machinery from the Suffolk Agricultural Association.

Commenting on the upcoming festival, Lady Caroline Cranbrook, President, said, “We’re so excited to be returning to Snape Maltings for our 17th Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival. As lovers of all things Suffolk, we set about to launch a not-for-profit annual event for locals and tourists alike to showcase the wonders of food and drink produced in our region.

13 Food & Drink Festival

A celebration of Suffolk’s thriving food and drink community and the county’s rich farming heritage

Returning to its home on the Snape Maltings estate, Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival will take place on 24th and 25th September.

Operating as a not-for-profit organisation, the festival dedicates itself to supporting and promoting the immediate area and the businesses within it, working year-round to give Suffolk producers, chefs, restaurants and businesses a platform to showcase what they do and earn the recognition they deserve. Now in its 17th year, all entry fees and donations are invested in next year’s festival and buying a ticket offers visitors the chance to support the individuals and businesses making Suffolk’s food scene what it is. Set alongside the banks of the enchanting River Alde, the festival strives to celebrate the wonderfully diverse and exceptional local food scene. The varied terrain and landscape of the Suffolk region makes for a wonderful array of local food producers and this year’s event will showcase the best of the best, from the East Coast fisheries to fruit and vegetable growers; local chefs to gin and honey producers.

The East Ipswich Camera Club programme leans heavily towards competitions within the club, which encourages them to develop their photography. During the year they also have a few lectures and discussion evenings to learn how to achieve better pictures. There are also occasional social events, which usually combine taking photographs at a specific location with perhaps a drink together Membershipafterwards.

The celebrated event, which offers a platform for the local community and is celebrated as one of the UK’s best food festivals, promises a stellar line up of headline chefs from across the country, food and drink exhibitors, and events throughout the weekend.

The first meeting of the Club’s 2022-23 season will be on Tuesday 6th September at 7.30pm. You can come along to meet the members and see if you would like to join for a guest fee of only £3 per evening.

Walk With a Fork Suffolk

On Sunday 4th September 2022, Ormiston Families are delighted to bring you the return of the Walk With A Fork event in collaboration with the East of England’s Co-op, around the splendid location of Helmingham Hall - with a twist.

We don’t need Powers of Attorney yet; we are not old and quite capable of looking after ourselves – I have heard these comments many times. My response is that’s great, and long may it continue, but what will happen if you suddenly can’t and do you know when that will be? I have recently helped Maureen and her family when not long after celebrating their golden wedding anniversary Jim suffered a stroke. The stroke left him with not only physical disabilities but, unfortunately, affected his capacity leaving him unable to look after his Suddenlyaffairs.

Jim and Maureen had a problem. Maureen didn’t have a Power of Attorney for Jim and could not access his account. Her state pension went into her account, but this was not enough to cover everything, and Suffolk County Council wanted a contribution from Jim towards his care fees. We have helped Maureen and her daughters apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as Deputies for Jim giving them the ability to deal with his affairs and make payments on his behalf. We have advised Maureen about creating a Power of Attorney so her daughters don’t find themselves in a pickle again if something happens to her, and we have also reviewed her Will in light of the couple’s change in Icircumstances.wouldliketostress the importance of thinking ahead and protecting you and your family by ensuring your Wills and Powers of Attorney are up to date and in order.

Lady Tollemache is very excited to be welcoming you back for a walk across the beautiful estate exclusively for you, so that you too can explore some of the most picturesque countryside Suffolk has to offer. Experience the views, architecture and hidden valleys not usually seen by members of the public. Waiting for you as you take on the route, you will be greeted by the sight of some of the finest food and drink our county has to offer. Suppliers of local produce have created little food-stops - feasts for the eyes as well as the stomach - for you to enjoy, as we celebrate Suffolk at its finest. And finally topped off with complimentary entrance into the gardens. A perfect day out for countryside and food lovers alike. We get together, chat and enjoy friendship

This is a great example of the local authority and businesses working together for the greater good.”

To support local towns and businesses, East Suffolk Council is delivering a range of digital projects which aim to strengthen the local economy and improve connectivity within the district’s market towns. One of these projects is the East Suffolk Digital Towns programme which will digitally transform market towns through the installation of free public Wi-Fi, digital footfall counters and town marketing platforms alongside a business support programme. It was initially piloted in Framlingham in 2019. Supported by funding from the Getting Building Fund and New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership’s Innovative Projects fund, this new technology will be combined with bespoke business support, helping local businesses and the towns in which they are based, to grow. Woodbridge Town Councillor Geoff Holdcroft said, “The Digital Towns programme is a great boost to the town. Not only will shoppers and visitors enjoy free connectivity, but we will also have the helpful information and marketing that can be used to support our high street.

His new solo tour, ‘From North Korea Into Iraq’ begins in Colchester on 1 October 2022 for the first of just ten UK dates which finish in Edinburgh on 21 October. ‘From North Korea Into Iraq’ will see Michael deliver first-hand accounts of journeys through two countries on the dark side of history. Both named by President George Bush as being part of the Axis of Evil. Using photos and film shot at the time, he will tell the story of his challenging adventures in the tightly controlled time bomb that is the People’s Republic of North Korea, and the bruised land of Iraq, once the home of civilisation, torn apart over the last thirty years by brutal war and bloodshed.Thesetwocountries are often portrayed as international pariahs, and two of the last places you’d want to visit, but for Michael, the best part of travelling is looking behind the headlines and getting to know what life is really like for the people who live there. Michael Palin said, “We shouldn’t forget that we share a common humanity with the people of North Korea and Iraq and in both these tough and difficult countries we found, as you will see, humour and hope, ambition, expectation, warmth, hospitality and extraordinary resilience. These journeys were for me a total eye-opener. ‘From North Korea Into Iraq’ may take you out of your comfort zone but I hope, like me, that once we’ve travelled together, your feelings about these two countries, and the wider world we share, will never be quite the same again.”

The concert takes place on Saturday 1st October at the Woodbridge Community Hall, Station Road, Woodbridge, IP12 4AU commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at just £10.00 and are available by telephoning 07934169721. He was unashamedly hugely passionate about food, but that decision to go for scoops not scones proved to be a wise one. For he spent more than 40 years in the news business and has now written all about it, in his new book, “Weren’t you that bloke off the telly?”

“Even though I’m no longer on TV, people still think I am, or say how much they miss me not being in their front-rooms on the box at six-thirty, and that’s so lovely. It’s really touching that they saw you as some kind of familiar and trusted nightly fixture!”

supporters to register for and show their love for their hospice, by taking on the 21.1km route which runs through Suffolk’s county town. This year’s course will see runners pass down Duke Street, through Ipswich Waterfront and then along Cliff Lane. Continuing around the River Orwell, before heading to Wherstead Road, back along Grafton Way and finishing at Portman Road stadium. All runners committed to raising funds for the hospice, will be required to commit to raising a minimum of £150 and in order to achieve this goal, they will receive advice and guidance from a member of the hospice challenge team. Q: Where did Kevin do his initial journalism training? you that bloke off the telly?”

“Weren’t

There is still time to sign up for the Ipswich Half Marathon this September in support of St Elizabeth Hospice.

Kevin joined the East Anglian Daily Times newspaper as a cub reporter in 1979, once he’d completed his initial journalism training at Harlow College. Challenged by the then editor to hit 120 words a minute at shorthand to secure a job, he managed it and never looked back. After nine years at the paper, he joined the BBC working in local radio in Norfolk and then returned to his native Ipswich, to help launch BBC Radio Suffolk as its first news Followingeditor. a spell working at BBC Television Centre in London, he returned to the region and joined BBC Look East, first with a spell in sport and then moving to the privileged role of working as Suffolk Reporter, for some twenty “Ityears.was such a joyous time,” says Kevin, “You never knew what to expect from day to day and sometimes it could be tragic and challenging, other times, it would be an absolute hoot”. Kevin was the main face of Look East’s coverage during the Suffolk murders, a time he remembers vividly, as three of the victims were found within walking distance of his home. “It was a bizarre time,” he recalls. “A pervading sense of fear all over the town, deserted streets, people afraid to go out, amid fears of a killer on the Kevinloose”. reflects on that time in his book, but also the lighter moments, especially rubbing shoulders with celebrities, from Nick Knowles on DIY SOS to Joan Collins in the West End.

“It was really lovely to write about my career in a chronological way. I didn’t keep extensive notes, but I was able to go back through the cuttings I kept of the stories I’d written in the newspaper, and trawl through the BBC library to form a pretty accurate picture of what happened and when. It’s been a joy and I hope readers find it as much fun as I did”.

Organised by Run For All, and sponsored by Larking Gowen, the Ipswich Half Marathon will be taking place on 11th September with St Elizabeth Hospice this year being charity partners. As charity partners, the hospice has been given 20 places in the run for

“So many times, when people saw you out reporting, or in the street, or the supermarket, the one thing they always wanted to know was, you’re the man off the telly aren’t you?” says Kevin, “So after I’d stepped back and started writing about my career, it seemed nice to put that oft-asked question in the past tense to create the title for the book.

St Elizabeth Hospice is an independent Suffolk charity providing free services to improve life for people living with a progressive or life limiting illness throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney. Centered on an individual’s needs, the hospice provides specialist support, whenever and wherever it is needed, whether at home, in the community or at the hospice.

The closing date for entries is Friday 30th September 2022.

WEDDINGS

First of all, every woman is different in shape and size. No two women are the same. This is why it is important that you know what type of dress best flatters your shape and size. Remember: It is not just about the dress; rather, it is about how you look in the dress. Wearing a pencil thin strapless gown when you are overweight will not compliment your figure. Neither will choosing a large puffy dress if you are on the shorter side. There are countless styles of dresses available on the market today. The best way to determine what style dress looks best on you is to try on a variety of styles. After carefully examining what type of dress accents your best features and covers your flaws, you will have a better idea of what style to purchase. Another thing you should consider when picking out a wedding dress is the colour of the dress. Although this seems like a ridiculous thing to consider - because most brides wear white - this is something that should also be carefully assessed. Keep in mind that even white has many tones and shades. Some women will look wonderful wearing pure white. But for other women, an off-white, champagne, or ivory colour may look much more flattering. It all depends on the type of skin tone and hair colour you have, as well as the style of dress you are choosing. Sometimes, women with dark hair and olive skin will look amazing in an ivory or champagne coloured dress - especially if it has intricate beading on it.

However, if the dress is plainer in style and more modern looking, the same woman may look good in pure white. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What you think looks superb may look less than attractive to someone else. This is why it is typically best to take at least one other person to pick out the dress with you. And, that brings us to a third point: taking someone with you to pick out the dress. If your mother (or mother figure) is alive and you have a good relationship with her, it is common that you would ask her to come along to choose a dress. And if you are keeping with tradition, you would also ask your future mother-in-law to come along as well. Any bridesmaids, best friends, or trusted confidantes are also usually chosen to go. However, some women prefer to go alone - it is all up to the bride and is usually based on the type of wedding that will take place. It is also a good idea to bear in mind how you move in your chosen dress. It’s one thing to have the dress of your dreams that you look stunning in, however if you are finding difficult to sit, kneel etc in your chosen gown you will be in for an uncomfortable day. Remember that you will be wearing your dress all day, so make sure you feel comfortable in it as well as looking amazing. No matter what you choose to do, just remember that the final say about what dress to choose is up to you. It is your wedding day, and no one else’s!

Choosing

WeddingPERFECTyourDress

A unique and beautiful country escape wedding venue nestled in the heart of the Suffolk countryside just off the A1120 at Stonham Aspal, surrounded by unspoilt scenery, yet conveniently located for the A14 and M25, making it the perfect setting for your wedding. The friendly and professional team are always available to organise a personal package to make your dream wedding perfect and will be on hand to turn any ideas you have into reality.

Yes, this is a party to celebrate the ceremony that preceded and it is a time to celebrate you and your new spouse as a couple. Making sure you enjoy the reception is critical. Believe it or not, things can get overwhelming and chaotic if you don’t plan ahead and know going into your reception what you need to do in order to ensure that you enjoy it.

Food packages are created by their in-house caterers, many options are available but if these are not to your liking or you need special dietary requirements, something more suitable can be created.

1. Visit Each Table If you don’t have a receiving line then you and your spouse must have a plan to visit each table. Typically the easiest time to do this is right after people are done eating. This will give you the opportunity to thank everyone for coming and make sure that you spoke with everyone. Take your photographer around with you so that he can get shots of you with your various guests. There will come a day when you forget who attended your wedding and photos are a great way to keep those memories alive.

5. Gift and Flower Plan. It is really important to have a gift and flower plan prior to the day of your wedding and reception. Have a designated person or persons who will be responsible for getting all your gifts either back to your house or to wherever you plan to open them. The flowers also need to be assigned to someone. These make great decorations for the morning after brunch or select a place that takes flower donations. Don’t leave this decision until the last few minutes of the reception and end the night by scrambling to find someone who has a vehicle large enough, knows where to go and is willing, possibly late at night, to deliver these items for you.

Beautiful bridal gowns can be purchased onsite at the Suffolk Bridal Outlet and there are beauty packages at The Beauty Barn and Elegant Hair & Beauty. Onsite accommodation is available for you and your guests to stay after your Therewedding.are also facilities for stag and hen parties, which include golf, fishing and hair and beauty packages for that pre-wedding pampering.

4. Eat! Eat! Eat! This maybe one of the most critical items on this list. It is so important that you eat at your reception. Yes, you may have a lot of people to say hello to and yes, you may feel that you need to get the party started by being out on the dance floor, but none of that will be truly enjoyed unless you have a full stomach and a clear head. The stress of the day and the cocktails of the night will catch up to you quickly if you don’t take the time to eat. And let’s face it, you have paid good money for the food, so be sure and partake.

our wedding reception will most likely be a whirlwind event that is over before you know it. It will be filled with friends and family as well as food and dancing.

2. Family Pictures. Be sure to get pictures at the reception of all your family members. Sometimes relatives will get lost in the crowd and your photographer may not know who is related to you. This is especially critical if you have family members who won’t be out on the dance floor. Photographers tend to drift towards where the action is in order to capture the candid moments of your reception. If you have family who aren’t likely to be in the midst of the action, be sure to let you photographer know ahead of time.

Over a third (37 per cent) regret the amount of money they spent, with 50 per cent having had received financial help from their family. And while 33 per cent accepted help from their partner’s family, a fifth (19 per cent) used savings and an eighth (12 per cent) took out a personal loan. Wedding planner Rianna Elizabeth added, “While the early planning stages can feel overwhelming, the good news is that there are techniques and ways to help steer your wedding planning in the right direction. “Set yourselves a timeline and running order to keep you on track in the lead up to your big day too. It’s important to work out your priorities as a couple – if there are then certain compromises you need to make to save costs, it will become clearer which elements to cut back on. Wedding planning is a really exciting time, so it’s important to remember to enjoy the process!”

REGRETS: 1.

The study, conducted via OnePoll, also revealed that a third (37 per cent) said they would go smaller if they were to have their big day again. Facilitating more guests, choice of catering and the wedding party’s outfits were among the top things people would spend less on a second time round. But despite their regrets, 47 per cent still felt had their ‘dream day’. And almost half (44 per cent) didn’t have to make any cutbacks – with 47 per cent of respondents able to stick to their budget.

“We hope these learnings from married couples who have planned a wedding previously, will help newly engaged couples work out their spending

Sally Conway, head of consumer communications at Shawbrook Bank Personal Loans, which commissioned the research, said, “The wedding day is one of the most special moments of a couple’s lives – but it’s also one of the most expensive. That’s why it’s essential to factor in plenty of time to make it both a personal and financial success. Planning early enough and using budgeting tips to manage the various costs is one way to help couples pivot a step closer to achieving their dream day.”

Sally Conway added, “Creating a budget in the early stages can help work out your priorities and keep overspending in check. It’s important to establish your total wedding fund early on –whether made up from current savings, future savings, family contributions or potential lending options – then you can estimate the costs of each element based on your priorities as a couple.

A survey of 2,000 married adults revealed more than half (53 per cent) would make changes to their wedding day if they did it again. Poor budgeting, not spending enough on a decent photographer, and even opting for a free bar also featured in the top 40 list of regrets. While almost four in ten (38 per cent) felt overwhelmed by the cost of their wedding, a fifth (20 per cent) had to make cutbacks due to spiralling costs. The honeymoon was the most common item couples decided to save cash on, with just under one in three (31 per cent) slashing their spend on a romantic getaway. Other cutbacks include reducing the number of wedding guests (26 per cent), the venue (24 per cent), and decorations (23 per cent).

The ultimate wedding playlist has been revealed, and Dancing Queen by Abba has taken the top spot – 46 years after it was first released.

The study also found 30 per cent of those polled believe speeches are typically the cheesiest part of any wedding ceremony. Second on this list was the often-awkward first dance (27 per cent) followed by the music choices (26 per cent). But more than one in 10 admit they never dance at weddings they attend. And the age-old question of whether wedding planners should go for a DJ or a live band hasn’t been answered – with Brits split right down the middle on what they prefer. On the big day, the wedding ceremony itself, including the exchanging of vows, was deemed slightly better than the evening party (24 per cent compared to 22 per cent). But 15 per cent simply look forward to enjoying the wedding

“There’s a reason many of the songs in this ultimate wedding playlist have been mainstays for decades, they’re timeless classics everyone knows, and Claire and I can’t wait to play a few of ours on one couple’s special day.”

Thebreakfast.average adult has attended eight weddings, putting them in a good position to judge how well one has gone – while 10 per cent estimate they’ve been to 15 or more. And of those who are already married, one in five had a row with their other half about what tunes should go on the all-important evening do Blueplaylist.starDuncan

A poll of 2,000 wedding guests saw Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen and Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline complete the top three. The ‘big day’ top 40 playlist also included Happy by Pharrell Williams, Toploader’s Dancing in the Moonlight, and Mr Brightside by The Killers. Single Ladies by Beyonce, and One Love by Blue also featured. The research also found 59 per cent love the cheesiness of a wedding playlist, and 21 per cent enjoy nothing more than a good boogie with pals to celebrate someone tying the knot. Savoury biscuit brand Mini Cheddars, which commissioned the research, has created the ultimate wedding superband, featuring Blue’s Duncan James and Claire Richards from Steps, which will perform for one night only this LeightonSeptember.Wall, a spokesperson for global snacking company, pladis UK&I said, “Weddings are a great way to let loose, at their heart they are all about happiness. Part of this happiness comes from letting go of inhibitions, hitting the dance floor and fully embracing those ‘guilty pleasures’. For some reason, showing emotions and being authentically yourself is seen as somewhat cheesy among many – but we say embrace it, not just at weddings but any time you fancy.”

“This is why it’s often best to leave your preconceived notions of what music is ‘good’ at the door, and let a DJ play the biggest crowd pleasers in their record collection.

Steps singer Claire Richards said, “To play such an amazing role in one couple’s wedding will be a real honour - I know how important music is at a wedding, and we can’t wait to make sure every guest fully embraces that no-care feeling you only get dancing your heart out at a wedding.”

James said, “It can be hard to reach a compromise on music if one person loves heavy metal and the other’s a pop-peddler.

Tropicandi décor motifs. “Pick tropical plants such as monstera, palms or ferns for a refreshing Tropicandi space,” Rebecca says. Aside from indoor plants, tropical motifs can go a long way. “Contrast a stylish grey velvet bed with bold tropical wallpaper in the bedroom,” Rebecca suggests. “Bring this vibe to the home office with tropical artwork and indoor plants,” Rebecca says. “A clean fresh white space with bursts of green breaks up the space visually and encourages self-care when working.”

Start with a contemporary grey sofa as the base for a clean Scandi feel. 1. You must wear speedos in France Thanks to a little known law from 1903, all men and boys must wear tight fitting swimwear at public pools in France, as looser shorts are deemed to be unhygienic and may dirty the water.

3. Don’t run out of fuel on the German autobahn Car enthusiasts and speed demons love trips along the German Autobahn, as they give drivers the chance to drive at over 100mph - but make sure you don’t run out of fuel along the way, otherwise you could face a hefty fine. This is because it is illegal to stop unnecessarily on the nation’s Autobahn roads and legislators say running out of petrol is not deemed important enough an excuse to escape punishment.

Regardless of how long Brits are intending to stay in another country, it’s important to get to grips with the cultural norms to avoid offending the locals or even getting on the wrong side of the law.

After vandals used chewing gum to mess with Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system and the Housing and Development Board spent thousands a year to clean gum litter, Singapore banned all gum substances in 1992. This means that anyone importing, selling or making chewing gum in Singapore can get fined and even given jail time, with the exception of nicotine and dental gums offering therapeutic value.

This melting pot of influences has created a rich language which is studied by billions of people across the globe. Like the English language, Home From Home provides an eclectic mix of services to take care of all of your property management needs. When it comes to any problems you may encounter we speak your language.

4. Don’t feed pigeons in Venice, Italy In 2008, city officials banned the common practice of feeding the local pigeons that frequent one of Venice’s most picturesque spots, St Mark’s Square, in a bid to stop them ruining the UNESCO status city. Fines for ignoring the ban start at around 50 euros!

Chris Nye, overseas property expert at Your Overseas Home said, “Various things and practices are frowned upon in some places abroad, from loose swim shorts and chewing gum to high heels and even feeding pigeons in certain areas, so it’s worth figuring out before you risk making a cultural faux pas or even being on the receiving end of a hefty fine.”

Overseas property experts at YourOverseasHome.com have researched and revealed eight of the strangest laws and rules that Brits should adhere to whether they’re simply visiting or moving abroad.

Was your beautifully perfected French, Spanish, Greek, etc. rolling fluently off your tongue this summer on your holiday or were you stumbling over your syllables hopelessly trying to find your way to the beach? Language is a tough code to be cracked but luckily there are some tools to help us Brits out! Google translate is the typical go-to, perhaps phrase books are your preference or just the age-old gesturing can often be effective! It’s said that the locals appreciate tourists speaking the native lingo but when you’ve asked for a bottle of water and ended up with an inflatable dolphin four days in a row it can get a bit wearing. Sometimes it’s easier to just throw in the towel and revert to the mother tongue! Although learning a foreign language seems like a steep task, interestingly English is heavily influenced by our European neighbours and some words can be very similar. Our turbulent history meant many invasions and with each one a new language was introduced. Celtic languages were mixed with Latin with the arrival of the Romans. The Angles, Saxons and Jutes brought Germanic language across the North Sea, driving the Celts to the North and West of the country. The arrival of Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England rendered Latin more prominent in today’s English whereas very few Celtic words survived. The Vikings introduced Norse words into our vocabulary many of which remain today such as sky, egg and cake! And later William the Conqueror brought French to our shores.

5. Keep your shirt on in Thailand In Thailand, it’s illegal for men to drive without a shirt on, as indicated in the Criminal Code from 1956. Section 388 of the code stipulates that any person who performs a disgraceful act in public by undressing himself, exhibiting his undressed person or committing any other act of obscenity, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding 500 baht, which is about £11-£12.

Don’t skimp on insurance

Cost of living rises essential

Inflation currently stands at 9.4 per cent – the highest in 40 years – and the Bank of England predicts it could hit 12 per cent by the autumn.

“Short-term savings could result in long-term “Insuranceloss.offers security against the unexpected. You cannot second guess the unexpected, but you can take all possible precautions to minimise the damage it can cause.”

make good windows

With the cost of living crisis not being far from anyone’s thoughts at the moment, now is the time to take a look at your home to ensure that you’re not wasting money through inefficient, old or poorly maintained windows.

“Similarly, it is worth examining any building insurance policies you may have, with your insurer. The supply shortage and inflated prices of building materials caused by the combination of the pandemic, the conflict in the Ukraine and inflation, may mean that repair and rebuild costs exceed expectations. This should be reflected in the policy.”

Fossett pointed out that as well as potentially ending up thousands of pounds out of pocket in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, those who choose to let contents insurance lapse entirely could find their risk profile adversely affected in the “Along-term.homeowner may be regarded as financially irresponsible when attempting to start a new insurance policy at a future date,” he added. “This could mean higher premiums.”

Here is where the experts Eastern Counties Home Improvements Ltd can help. A staggering 25%-30% of heat lost from houses is through the windows, from the homeowners point of view lost heat equates to lost money and to the environment it means more carbon is released as a result of higher fuel use. Replacing wooden windows with energy efficient A rated PVC-u windows could save you ££££s per year in heating costs as well as reducing noise, draughts and condensation Windows are now rated in the same way as electrical appliances with an A, B, C etc rating to indicate energy usage. The energy rating is determined the ‘U’ Value which is a measure of how well heat passes through a material. The lower the ‘U’ Value the greater the resistance to heat flows and therefore the better the insulating qualities.

“In light of such rises, it is essential to check contents insurance policies. Items may have increased in value since purchase, and the sums they are insured for may not reflect their true value,” Fossett said. “To avoid being underinsured, it is advisable to arrange a revaluation of significant items.

After Deben Flower Club’s break in August, they look forward to being back in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton IP10 0PU on Tuesday 13th September at 7.30pm when the demonstrator will be Rachael Borenkova and her title is “My life in Flowers”. As they do not produce dramatic television campaigns, they can supply energy efficient windows for a much lower cost than many of the national double-glazing companies. Eastern Counties Home improvements Ltd’s well engineered A rated windows achieve a U Value of 1.4W/m²K and will reduce energy consumption while looking good for years to come. They provide A rated energy efficient windows for no additional cost so you can minimise your impact on the environment while both saving money and enhancing the appearance of your home.

“It is important to seek advice from an experienced insurer or broker and review your current insurance before contemplating making any changes to your arrangements.

An insurance expert has cautioned householders in the East of England against cutting corners on home insurance as a way of coping with the cost-ofliving crisis. Anderson Fossett, of insurance broker Lycetts, has spoken out following a YouGov survey that revealed 11 per cent of Britons would cut back on premiums and policies if the crisis affected their family budget.

“At a time like this, you need all the protection you can get, and economising on vital cover could leave you shouldering a heavy financial burden,” he said.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are a measurement of compounds like minerals, salts, and organic compounds that are dissolved into the water through contact with rock and other surfaces.

27 AT HOME

Measuring water TDS levels is the best way to understand the quality of your drinking water. Total Dissolved Solids are organic and non-organic sediments found in water, which contribute to a difference in the taste, odour, and appearance of water. Dissolved solids enter your water supply from a wide range of sources — old piping, run-off from road salts, pesticides, fertilizers, andTDSmore.is tested in water through special meters that detect particles.

5-Stage water filters by ZeroWater® remove 99.6% of total dissolved solids in your drinking ZeroWater’swater.Ready-Pour™ water filter jug is the first in its class with a sealed lid and reservoir. This allows easy pouring of water that has been filtered without spilling water that is still in the reservoir meaning a further cup capacity can be added to the existing cup design. The Ready-Pour™ uses the patented ZeroWater filtration system, which combines FIVE sophisticated technologies that work together to remove virtually all dissolved solids from your water. The result is greattasting water, straight from the tap, and the only pour-through filter pitcher on the market that’s certified by the NSF to reduce lead.

COMPPRIZE

Moreover, it reduces 99% of all Fluoride from your ZeroWater’swater. first layer of filtration, activated carbon and oxidation reduction alloy, removes the chlorine taste you are accustomed to with tap water. The Ion Exchange stage removes virtually all dissolved solids that may be left over from public water systems or even leached into your water from piping, such as aluminum, lead, zinc, nitrates, and more. Three additional stages are included to remove other contaminants and ensure your water receives the appropriate amount of treatment time to deliver water that has virtually zero dissolved solids.

At Ipswich24 we tried out the ZeroWater’s Ready-Pour™ water filter jug for ourselves. After unwrapping our jug and attaching the filter it was easy to fill the jug and the water filtered through quite quickly. As per the instructions we tested our water straight from the tap and found our ZeroWater® TDS meter showed the number of solid particles per one million water particles (ppm) in our water was 286! We then ran our tap water through the ZeroWater Ready-Pour™ water filter jug and we were absolutely amazed to discover we now had a reading of zero! The jug had removed all of the TDS from our tap water. And, not only did we now have perfectly clean water it tastes great too!

A ZeroWater® TDS meter will show the number of solid particles per one million water particles (ppm). For example, a value of 60 ppm means that from one million particles there are 60 dissolved ions, and the rest (999,940) are water molecules.

TDS can be made up of several different types of compounds (including but not limited to): calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium chloride and sulphides (which are compounds frequently found in groundwater supplies). Increased levels of TDS (total dissolved solids) may affect the taste and appearance of your water.

Brits put homes at risk by NOT locking doors

With the average Brit moving 1.4 times in the past 10 years, it’s not surprising that almost a third (32%) of people still have a key to one of their previous homes within that time. With many homeowners handing out spare keys, there could be numerous people who still have access to their new home, showing just how important it is to upgrade the locks when moving in.

“Moving into a new home is stressful, with a long list of tasks to complete when you finally get the keys. But with new homeowners often targeted by opportunists, it’s essential that us Brits prioritise our home security by investing in trusted products from reputable brands. These days, security products are so easy to setup, with the need for lots of alarm wiring or complicated installation a thing of the past. Smart security options, such as the Yale Sync Alarm, can be installed in minutes to give you peace of mind at “Withhome.more than half of Brits (51%) owning up to not having any smart security products in their home, and recent Home Office data citing nearly 268,000 burglaries from April 2020 to April 20213, improving your home security has never been more important.”

• For more information or advice on how to protect your home or the range of home security products from Yale, visit www.yalehome.co.uk.

The survey by Yale revealed that when moving house, it’s not home security at the top of a homeowners’ to-do list. A third of Brits (33%) said the first thing they do when moving into a property is clean, with more homeowners choosing to make a cup of tea (15%) than change the locks in their new home (11%).

Following these eye-opening statistics from the survey, Joanne Rush, Marketing Director at Yale UK said, “Although 59% of Brits surveyed said they would invest in home security products to give them peace of mind, it’s clear that many homeowners aren’t putting enough importance on the protection of their home.

A new survey from the home security experts at Yale has shown that from keeping a light on (52%), to leaving a television or radio on (28%) or even asking a neighbour to park on the drive whilst they’re away (24%), Brits go to extraordinary lengths to avoid their home looking empty when left But,unattended.despite statistics showing that 58% of burglaries occur when someone is inside the property2, Yale’s survey of 2,000 homeowners show that nearly half (42%) don’t even lock their doors and windows when they’re at home.

A BSI 3-star cylinder lock, such as the Yale Platinum 3-Star Cylinder, is endorsed by the Police Secured by Design scheme and provides anti-snap protection for properties.

Nearly half of Brits don’t lock their doors and windows when they’re home, a new study from Yale shows, putting UK homes at risk.

Whilst homeowners are investing huge sums into moving to their perfect home, they are often not protecting it adequately, leaving it vulnerable to being targeted by opportunists.

Despite UK homeowners underestimating the importance of their home security measures, with the survey finding that 65% of people haven’t upgraded their home security in the last two years, it’s a big factor for home buyers looking to purchase a property. When searching for a new home, 38% of people are looking for low crime stats in the area, followed by 24% wanting an alarm system and 22% after a door lock that meets British Standard BS3621 - a lock standard required by some insurance companies.

Clothes, books and electronics are the most popular products shoppers and sellers are exchanging across the UK.

Nick Landon, chief commercial officer for Royal Mail Parcel Collect, which carried out the study to celebrate surpassing over six million items being collected since its launch in 2020, said, “It’s wonderful to see the nation’s entrepreneurship blossom and grow.

A poll of 3,000 adults found 67 per cent love trading their second-hand wares and send or receive an average of seven parcels per month. While 27 per cent claim selling online is their main source of income. And the small business love is real, with 47 per cent saying they support side hustlers and independent businesses more than any other online retailer.

Holly Tucker’s time-saving tips for sellers and side-hustlers

- Grab a notebook and scribble down everything that springs to mind for your creative rituals, your ordering system, customer service and marketing. Then identify the low-hanging fruit (the things you can change now) and the slow burners (the things you need to work on in order to change them). Try and tick a few things off each week, from both lists.

- Outsourcing can save you time and allow you to focus on driving your business forward in the areas you are most confident in. There’s no shame in reaching outside the business and asking for advice and help from others.

- Instead of trekking to a drop off point with arms full of parcels, have you considered having your post collected from your doorstep? Look for couriers which collect from home and wave goodbye to the effort and aggro of having to go out. Simply coordinate a collection time from your doorstep instead.

“We are proud to be an enabler of everyday people, looking to pursue their dreams amid the cost-of-living crisis.”

Top reasons for using online platforms like these are saving money and enjoying the thrill of hunting down the perfect item. Others like allowing someone else to enjoy something they no longer need (35 per cent) and giving items a new lease of life (31 per cent). Environmental factors also play a role with a third using online marketplaces because it’s better for the environment, and 28 per cent wanting to set a good example to their kids about buying and selling pre-loved items, rather than buying new.

Almost one in three Brits claim to have a ‘side hustle’ – selling goods online to the tune of £200 a month.

Of those who sell, just under half feel a sense of achievement when they ship a parcel off to its new home. While 36 per cent of buyers claim it puts a spring in their step when their parcel arrives, with 32 per cent describing a parcel delivery as the ‘highlight’ of their day.

The small business community is a vibrant and loving group, and if you don’t have the skills or knowledge, I can guarantee someone else will or will know exactly who to turn to.

The study also found eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Etsy were the online marketplaces that respondents use most frequently.

Holly Tucker MBE, long-term partner of Royal Mail and founder of notonthehighstreet and Holly & Co, said, “It’s impressive to see how entrepreneurial we are as a nation, and how many of us are selling and sending parcels across the UK, from handmade wares through to secondhand goods.”

“We are delighted to play a pivotal role in making that possible – supporting the nation’s small businesses and side hustlers to distribute their precious cargo up and down the country - from doorstep to doorstep.

- Each day, pick the three key tasks you need to prioritise. These are the jobs that will move the dial and tackle them first. I like to dedicate the hour before anyone wakes up in my house, to this special and highly important list. Dedicating yourself to moving the business forward is not only great for the business, it’s brilliant for your mental health.

Nick Landon added, “We know how important the nation’s parcels are. Getting them to their new homes, in good hands, is our top priority. Our Parcel Collect service is part of our ongoing commitment to create innovative and convenient ways to collect and deliver precious parcels from our customers doorsteps, every day.”

3. Reducing downtime Nothing is infallible; however, what we can guarantee with our full fibre infrastructure is that any faults can be identified and fixed in record time. Through embedded network systems, we are constantly monitoring our network, which means we’ll often be able to detect and repair a fault before you even notice it!

Yet with inconsistent download speeds, poor quality services, and even mysterious periods of downtime which can last hours while maintenance is carried out, there is room for improvement with our online experiences. So, what can be done to ensure that our digital connectivity meets the demands of 21st century living? The main thing is making sure that people in Ipswich have access to reliable, high-speed networks that can grow with us as our data use increases as we use broadband dependant technologies – and full fibre is the best technology for the job.Unlike the majority of the digital infrastructure used to deliver broadband to today’s households, full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at lightspeed all the way from your home to the internet exchange – a full endto-end service. Copper, on the other hand, transmits data using a much slower, heavier electrical signal and the Government’s aim is to transition us away from these older networks in the near future. At CityFibre, we believe everyone should be able to harness all the benefits of the digital age. That’s why we are working in communities like Ipswich to deliver town and city-wide full fibre networks that will future-proof them for decades to come.Buthow will having full fibre broadband benefit you? Here we will explore how this world-class digital infrastructure can combat some of the top frustrations people report with their broadband services – from pricing and customer service to dropouts and low speeds.

Reliable connectivity is now an everyday essential, with many Ipswich residents now depending on our broadband service for our jobs, teaching our kids, shopping, or just winding down after a busy day.

1. Making connectionyourfaster

Full fibre networks are designed to allow for services to be rerouted in an instant. This negates the faults you might get with traditional copper-based networks, which can often result in whole streets losing connections for extended periods.

experienceyourimproveinternet

it will be about investigating the choice on offer and making the right purchasing decision for them.

Five ways

5. Building a network that your grandchildren will be using Our full fibre network is futureproof. This means that as our data consumption grows, our full fibre network will be able to support faster speeds and greater bandwidth with simple upgrades. 8K movies streamed to your home? No problem. Zero latency and lag while using your PlayStation 28 in the future? Easy. Full fibre is capable of handling all of this and more. While our data consumption and reliance on it increases, it is the technology of the future and will not need replaced for generations to come. So when can I get it? Currently, around a quarter of homes in the UK have access to full fibre broadband, and at CityFibre we are working hard to increase this number. With an investment of up to £4 billion to bring our network within reach of 8 million homes across the UK, our Gigabit cities and towns will be some of the best connected on the planet. Included in this is a £35m investment to deliver our network here in Ipswich which means, as a resident, you will soon be able to access all the benefits which full fibre broadband can bring.

— Advertorial —

A low bandwidth can also cause your connection to dropout, this can be caused by too many people or devices trying to access the network at the same time – an issue which is resolved with the connection speeds offered by our full fibre network.

4. Getting more bang for your buck At CityFibre, we want to see the UK benefit from a more competitive telecoms landscape, as this will drive service improvement. That’s why our network is open access. We are working with an ever-growing list of UK internet service providers (ISPs), creating competition across our network. This will give residents who want access the benefits of full fibre greater choice.

For around 65% of households, connections to the internet come via copper cabling, which is designed to carry sound, not data. Our network, on the other hand, is 100% full fibre, and carries data at the speed of light. Meaning you will have access to the fastest broadband available. What’s more, full fibre enables ‘symmetrical’ speeds which means you will get the same speed for upload and download, ensuring you have the broadband services you need to serve your data needs as they grow, meaning everyone can use their devices when they want without the dreaded buffering.

2. Making your internet connection more reliable There are many different reasons why your internet might drop out, but some of the most common causes are poor weather and network damage. Our infrastructure is resistant to electromagnetic interference and water, meaning it won’t be impacted by stormy weather or flooding. Even better, the way we build our digital networks means that services can often be rerouted temporarily while any major repairs are made, so you don’t even have to suffer maintenance outages.

34 WELLBEING Brits are most likely to smile when spending time with family, waking up to sunshine and making someone else grin. The poll of 2,000 adults found bagging a bargain and finding forgotten cash rounded off the top five things that make people happy. Hearing a baby giggle, a smiley stranger in the street, and being sent a meme also ranked high in the top 30 list. Although the average UK adult will encounter 11 things a day that make them beam, 59 per cent reveal they have felt self-conscious about their smile. With three-quarters blaming it on how their teeth look. The research was commissioned TePe as part of its campaign to raise awareness of the health conditions linked to oral health. Kelly Field, from the oral health specialist, said, “It is often the little things which can brighten up our days - whether it’s a smiley stranger in the street or hearing a baby giggle. With the pandemic shining a new light on the importance of quality time with loved ones, it is perhaps unsurprising that spending time with family is most likely to make the nation smile.

Kelly Field added, “Just like regular exercise and a balanced diet, looking after your teeth and gums is part of a healthy lifestyle.

“Because most dental disease starts between your teeth where food and plaque accumulate, along with regular dental appointments and brushing teeth twice a day, it’s important to clean between the teeth daily, using floss or interdental brushes.”

“This may be because bacteria in inflamed gums can travel to blood vessels elsewhere in the body; or because inflammation in the gum triggers damaging inflammation in the blood vessels of the heart and brain.

GP Dr Sarah Jarvis said, “When we think of the benefits of looking after our oral health, it’s fillings and root canals which normally spring to mind, but the benefits extend much wider than your smile. Poor oral hygiene has been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

A couple of centuries back, some smart-asses invented the printing press. In 2015, three young Dutch students added their own invention to the list which most likely put a halt to the evolution of our species: Pockies – the only boxer shorts with Pockets. How has mankind been able to live without it, for all these years? Where did Christopher Columbus hide his passport while setting sail for the new world? Where would Tom Hanks have put his wife’s picture during WWll? Where did Biggie keep his piece when frisked by the po-po? No one knows. Luckily, those days are over. It all started in the student house of Michiel Dicker (30), Rob ten Hoove (29) and Karel Bosman (32). Dicker was on the couch, in his ‘regular’ underwear and with no place to put his phone. “Wouldn’t it be nice if these boxer shorts had pockets,” he thought out loud. Bosman jumped up exclaiming, “Dude, this is it! Let’s do this!” And so an adventure began. The three boys put all their savings together and ordered the first batch of Pockies; 2,000 pieces. “Those were exciting times. We were either going to sell, or be stuck with a truckload of underwear for the rest of our lives,” Bosman says. Friends were asked to model, the website was built by themselves with little experience, and their first orders were packed using duct tape.

The fear of having a lifetime supply of boxer shorts proved to be unfounded. Within three weeks, the first batch sold out entirely.

“We couldn’t believe it. We had to run from our lectures, or skip them altogether, to prepare orders,” a laughing Bosman says. These days, the distribution of Pockies is done solely by professionals, in three different locations. It’s good to see the importance of sustainability being recognised at Pockies. A promise to treat Mother Earth a little better was made when teaming up with GOTS and OEKOTEX, certifiers of organically grown cotton. Recycling also comes into the picture when products don’t rely on cotton, i.e. the swim-wear collection. Along with their friends at Waste 2 Wear, Pockies ensures that a pair of swim shorts is made out of 10 recycled plastic bottles that would have otherwise strangled a baby turtle out in the ocean. Besides the pockets, besides the material, there was one other very important aspect in creating the perfect boxer short: the fit. “We hated the fact that other boxer shorts would provide a front-row view of our crown jewels when we sat down,” says Bosman. “That’s why we created our boxer shorts with fitted legs. This way it won’t crawl up and you don’t have to present your friends and family with your precious parts.” Since the three entrepreneurs decided to take the big leap from Amsterdam to the U.K. two years ago, they’ve sold over 75,000 pairs of Pockies to date. Englishmen seem to love the trouserless lifestyle and Covid really made that a thing. We were even told by our customers that most of their dreaded Zoom meetings and video conferences were done with their nicest shirt on, their trousers off, and nothing but a pair of Pockies underneath.

5. Use rubbing alcohol at the bottom of our shoe For this hack, there are two ways you can achieve odourless shoes. Firstly you will need to fill a small bowl with rubbing alcohol, use a cotton pad to soak the solution, and apply to the sole of the shoe until it is completely covered. Alternatively, you can pour the rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and apply the mixture to the inside of your shoe. As rubbing alcohol is a natural antiseptic it will disinfect your shoe and naturally dry out the odour.

And although a quarter view copper as essential, just 29 per cent were aware part of its role is to produce red and white blood cells. Only 21 per cent knew cheese is a good source of vitamin A, while one in five didn’t realise that calcium is needed to help build strong bones and teeth. But two thirds of adults were also unaware that the NHS advice states that adults aged 19-64 need 40mg of vitamin C in their diet a Whileday. more than half didn’t know that adults need 10mg of vitamin D daily, and that the NHS advice is to take a supplement to meet this level between September and March. It also emerged 41 per cent are confused about how the amounts of vitamins and minerals you need change as you get older – to cope with different life stages. While 69 per cent of parents don’t always consider the vitamins and minerals their children need when planning their meals as they don’t really know what they need. Knowing your nutrients

Sophie, Consultant Dietitian at CityDietitians, said, “Humans need different vitamins and minerals for their body to continue to function healthily, but these can vary depending on your “Childrenage. who go through phases of fussy eating may benefit from a more comprehensive vitamin supplement which includes iron and B vitamins as these are particularly important for growth and development. And when they are school age, brain function and immunity are at the top of the agenda for parents.

A spokesperson for Vitabiotics said, “Many of us are aware of the need for vitamins and minerals in staying healthy and allowing your body to function normally. But there seems to be confusion about what those essential vitamins are, how much of them we still need and also how you get them into your diet. For parents, there is also the added issue of knowing what your children should be consuming and whether they are getting what they need.

“As they grow into teenagers, their nutritional needs are high as they hit growth spurts and puberty. But even as an adult, your needs can change – especially during pregnancy or as you reach middle age or old age.”

More40 than a quarter of drivers who have taken their own cars abroad to continental Europe have driven non-stop for five or more hours, with one-in-10 having done so for upwards of seven hours, putting their safety and that of their passengers and other road users at risk, a new survey by RAC European Breakdown shows.

“Perhaps it’s the determination to get to their destination combined with the fact there are often fewer cars on the road which is leading drivers to put themselves, their passengers and others in danger. The quieter motorways, with less going on to keep drivers alert might feel less arduous, but it can also induce “Regularfatigue.breaks are essential to keep drivers alert, as well as themselves and their passengers comfy, and, given the frequency and quality of many service areas on the continent, the reality is there’s really no need to go a very long time without stopping. Anyone driving on the continent is best to factor in plenty of breaks and regard the driving as part of the holiday, not least as two-thirds of drivers think the quality of roads abroad are far superior to those in the UK.

“Every driver hopes that their European adventure by car goes without a hitch but having peace of mind should a breakdown take place is essential. For this reason, getting an excellent level of European breakdown cover should be on every driver’s to-do list. After all, the cost to recover a car back to the UK can easily run into thousands of pounds – a cost which is often met by the most comprehensive levels of cover available, which can start from just a few pounds a day.”

Dangers of driving abroad

“It’s also really important that drivers know the correct phone number to call the emergency services while away, with our research finding that most aren’t aware of the single 112 number that works widely across Europe. Having the right letters displayed on the back of their cars is also vital, with a significant proportion of those we surveyed still – incorrectly – planning on displaying GB stickers. As of last September, any GB lettering must be removed or covered up and a UK sticker used instead.

When it comes to what to do in the event of an emergency, the RAC survey also found that less than three-in-10 drivers (28% – of those who have driven in mainland Europe) know the correct phone number to ring to contact the emergency services to ring in Europe (112). Nearly half don’t know what the right phone number is, while 8% think it is 999 (which only works in the UK), 7% think it is 111 (the non-emergency line for the NHS in the UK) and 5% think it is 101 (the number to reach police forces in a non-emergency situation in the UK).

With the Highway Code recom mending drivers take a break of at least 15 minutes for every two hours of driving and EU rules stating that drivers of goods vehicles, buses and coaches must take a break of at least 45 minutes for every four-anda-half hours of driving, the figures highlight the risk that UK motorists are putting themselves, their pas sengers and other road users at by going so long without a rest.

The research, conducted among 2,500 UK drivers of which four-in-10 (39%) have driven in Europe, also shows the extent to which drivers are prepared to drive for longer when going abroad, with 16% saying they’ve driven without a rest for six or more hours when overseas versus 12% who have done so this side of the Channel. Compared to the one-in-10 (10%) who say they’ve driven seven or more hours when abroad, just 6% admit to doing so in the UK. Men are also significantly more likely to drive for longer than women, the figures show. Three-in-10 male drivers have driven without a break on the continent for five or more hours, while a fifth admit to doing so for six hours and upwards. This compares to 18% of women who have driven non-stop in Europe for five or more hours, and around one-in-10 who have done so for six or more hours.

As of last September, drivers must also display the letters ‘UK’ on their vehicles when taking them out of the United Kingdom, yet 24% of drivers travelling to Europe this summer said they still intend to display a GB sticker with 12% relying on the ‘GB’ letters on their number plates. Amazingly, 16% don’t plan on displaying any sort of country identifier at all. RAC Europe spokesman Rod Dennis said. “Tiredness kills so the fact that such a large proportion of drivers are prepared to go for so long without taking a break when driving on the other side of the Channel is alarming. Add in the fact that the number of road deaths in countries including France, Belgium and Italy are higher than in the UK, drivers are putting themselves at risk by going so long without a stop.

The research also looked at the extent to which drivers are changing their holiday plans this year as a result of the cost-of-living crisis. Nearly a fifth say they will be cutting back on their spending while on holiday, with 10% taking a shorter break in order to keep their costs down. But interestingly, while nearly one-in-10 will stay in the UK rather than go abroad, 3% will do the reverse – travel to France or beyond in order to save money.

Tim Rankin, managing director of AA Accident Assist, said, “As more people buy electric vehicles, they want reassurances that, should the worst happen, the AA is ready to help.

The survey comes as AA Accident Assist announces major assurances to EV drivers that its services exceed their expectations by covering the cost of repairs, uses accident repair body shops that are approved by EV manufacturers and provide a lifetime quality guarantee on all AArepairs.members can use the complimentary service regardless of their insurer and should they not be at fault, members would not need to pay their excess.

“We’re giving power to electric drivers with the very best and independent advice, use of EV manufacturer approved garages and body shops, coupled with fitment of genuine manufacturer parts, therefore giving peace of mind to those involved in a collision.

Over a third of drivers say their car experiencing a fault on the motorway is the most stressful breakdown scenario they could encounter, while a fifth are most worried about their vehicle breaking down on a country road.

More than half of drivers say they consider the safe repair and any potential replacement of the main driving battery to be an area of concern should an electric car (EV) be involved in a collision.

Interestingly, of those who did not find a breakdown stressful, two-thirds were rescued by their breakdown provider after the incident, highlighting the peace of mind provided by breakdown cover.

‘Breakdown anxiety,’ worrying their car could malfunction when driving, affects 24.5 million motorists’ reveals new research from breakdown provider Green Flag.

A car failing while on the way to catch a flight or train abroad is another leading cause of breakdown anxiety, with one in eight drivers listing this as their highest stress scenario. When people do breakdown, some of the main concerns are the repair costs, being far from home when the incident occurs and the road location. Most drivers when they breakdown are rescued by a specialist provider. A small amount are rescued by friends, a local garage or partners.

Green Flag recommends drivers follow these steps if breaking down on a motorway:-Makesure you pull to the left as soon as there’s a hint of trouble: Pull onto the hard shoulder and use this to slow to a halt. Be careful not to run over any debris and as you come to a stop, switch your hazard lights straight on - Aim for an emergency phone: These are at one-mile intervals and will connect you directly to the police who will instantly know your location - Never try to fix it yourself: Whatever the problem with your car, you should never attempt to mend it yourself at the roadside - When your car is stationary: Turn the front wheels towards the verge. If the car is shunted by another vehicle this will ensure it moves away from the carriageway rather than into it. If it’s dark or visibility is poor, turn your side lights on - Get everyone out of the car: Leave the car through the left-hand doors and move away from the vehicle. If you have children with you make sure they’re being looked after by a responsible adult away from the roadside – potentially up the verge where possible.

“We also go further by providing our insurer customers and members who have a not-at-fault claim with an electric hire car whilst theirs is undergoing repair, so they can keep the electric revolution going.”

- Don’t display your red warning triangle: With fast moving traffic the risks far outweigh the benefits of doing this - Call for help: If you’re not near an emergency phone and you’ve got a mobile signal, ring either your breakdown provider or the police - Wait near your car for assistance: Make sure your vehicle’s locked and you’re standing safely away from any moving traffic

“Regardless of their insurer, AA Accident Assist is able to help EV drivers at the time of their greatest need.”

Accident Assist service for EV drivers

Prevention is always better than cure and we know that many breakdowns are avoidable if proper care is taken before and during a trip.”

The survey of more than 13,500 drivers by AA Accident Assist, unsurprisingly found that three fifths of drivers are most concerned with the cost of EV repairs. Half of drivers placed high importance on having specialist EV repairers carrying out mechanical repairs, while 45% say they would rank the availability of parts as important. A quarter considered the environmental factor of the safe disposal and recycling of the main driving battery as important to them.

Over half of UK drivers face breakdown anxiety

Katie Lomas, Head of Green Flag Breakdown, commented: “Breaking down can be a stressful situation for drivers, especially if it happens on a motorway or an isolated country road. It is vital drivers know what they should do in these scenarios. The most important thing is for the driver and any passengers to be safe, remain calm, and do their best to ensure their car does not cause a danger to other road users.

Baltacha Foundation serves up treat for Zest young adults

On Tuesday 5th July, there were lots of smiling faces to be seen and fun to be had as the young adults interacted and played a variety of tennis games kindly organised by The Elena Baltacha Foundation. The Foundation was set up by, former British tennis player, Elena Baltacha before she sadly passed away from liver cancer in 2014. Elena’s vision was to give more children, from deprived and disadvantaged backgrounds, the opportunity to play tennis, by offering free and subsidised coaching. The visit followed the success of love-all auction, held in 2021, The online auction raised funds for women’s cancer charities through the WTA, The Murray Play Foundation, through Judy Murray, and local charity GeeWizz children’s charity and Zest – which is part of the St Elizabeth Hospice Group, and sees the independent Suffolk charity work closely with children’s hospices and other services, to ensure young adults have a smooth transition into adult care.

42There was a real tennis themed treat for the young adults of Zest this July, as The Elena Baltacha Foundation visited the service’s Zest X-Change evening to host a number of tennis activities during the height of Wimbledon excitement.

From its industry unique Short Breaks, which allows young people to take time out from being at home while also providing families with vital respite.
