INSIDE INTOUCH

From the Editors... With two generations of pilots before him, you could almost say flying was in Matt Hall’s blood. This month the Merewether ‘Top Gun’ takes to the skies in the final leg of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Indianapolis and Las Vegas. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world’s best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill and it’s in this setting that Matt feels most at home. We spoke to Matt ahead of the World Championships about what it takes to compete at this level and how he has always lived by the ‘chase your dreams’ philosophy – truly an inspiration. Also flying high in October is Felix the Black Cat - the only operational Catalina flying boat in Australia. The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s big black beauty hasn’t been seen at the annual Catalina Festival at Rathmines Park since 2013 but returns to this year’s festival as the star of the show. Don’t miss your chance to line the western shores of Lake Macquarie to see it swoop low over the surface of the lake in an amazing display of flying at the 10th Rathmines Catalina Festival on Sunday, October 30th.

ALEX WILLIAMSON OPEN UP - City Hall

POKOLBIN ESTATE Belebula Tempranillo

Alex Williamson (or Shooter Williamson) is a multi-talented hit YouTube sensation, a varied film-maker, songwriter and performer. If you know of Shooter Williamson or have watched one of his raw youtube videos, you'll know why he has been nicknamed the 'Loosest Aussie Bloke'!

Pokolbin Estate has a reputation for producing outstanding wines and have enjoyed significant success with their Mediterranean-style red wines. The popular Belebula Tempranillo does not disappoint. This is an elegant wine with a rustic ruby red bouquet displaying savoury, earthy aromas. The French oak gives the wine a delicate berry fruit driven aroma with hints of leather and spice. The soft tannins linger with a smooth finish. A wonderful wine that will benefit with a little more time. The medium-full bodied nature adapts well to a wide variety of foods including roasted vegetables, cured meats, tomato based pizza and pasta dishes. Mexican foods and obviously Spanish paella or tapas.

But now Alex seems to have evolved, and is so much more than the nickname that has defined his career. With his keen eye, sharp tongue and observational humour, Williamson's latest musical, the multi-media spectacular Open Up should "take you on one hell of a ride" (Rip it Up). Alex has a following of over 2.5million people across social platforms (and growing), plus sold-out shows at all major Australian comedy festivals and Edinburgh Fringe Festival since 2012. He is on the way up - don't miss his brand new, side-splitting show at City Hall on October 15!

A THRILLING RACE TO THE FINISH

FOR THE UBER-COOL MATT HALL WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

With two generations of pilots before him, you could almost say flying was in Matt Hall’s blood. Born on September 16, 1971, in Scone, it didn’t take long before Hall was following in the vapour trails of his father and grandfather, starting with his first plane ride at the age of two. By the time he was 15 he was ready to take the controls for his first solo flight in an L13 Blanik Glider and just three years later successfully gained his aircraft pilot’s licence. At the age of 19 Hall joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as an Officer Cadet in Point Cook, Victoria – following a military flight path previously taken by his grandfather, who was a World War II pilot. Graduating Dux of his 159 Pilots course, he was assigned as a Jet Fighter pilot and in 1997 was named the RAAF Fighter Pilot of the Year. He logged more than 1500 hours flying the F/A-18 Hornet in the RAAF and went on to become an elite Fighter Combat Instructor – or Top Gun, as it is also known. A three-year exchange program with the United State Air Force saw him notch up more than 500 hours in the F-15E Strike Eagle and flew a number of combat missions in the 6 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Middle East during the Gulf War in 2003 – an effort that saw him receive commendations in both the US and Australia. But despite a flourishing and decorated military career, it was the flying he was doing when he was off the clock that would set the direction for his future in the skies. Hall had been flying aerobatics in his spare time for many years but stepped things up a notch during his US posting in 2002. In 2003 he won the US East Coast Aerobatic Championship at the Sportsman level and in 2007, several years after returning to Australia he placed second in the Australian National Aerobatic Championships after taking out the Freestyle section of the Unlimited competition. Around six months before that win, Hall had his first taste of the Red Bull Air Race, having travelled to Perth with his RAAF squadron to check out the adrenaline-packed event. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world’s best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile, lightweight racing planes, pilots hit speeds of 370km/h while enduring forces of up to 10G as they navigate a low-level slalom track marked by 25-metre-high, air-filled pylons. Despite his own prowess as a pilot, at the time Hall never imagined he would one day be within reach of taking out the World Championship of the event himself. “(Seeing my first event in 2006) I thought the same thing then as I do now and that is that this is a really, really cool sport to be involved with,” Hall told intouch Magazine. “Back then though I really didn’t see myself one day competing in the Red Bull Air Race. It wasn’t until a few years later that I actually believed it was possible.” While Hall’s career in the RAAF continued to take off – he was promoted to Wing Commander in September 2007 – so too did his success in the aerobatics world.

The same month he was promoted he travelled to America to compete in the Unlimited section of the US National Aerobatic Competition and two months later he entered Red Bull’s radar after they offered him a chance to participate in a series of elite training camps run by former World Champion Patrick Paris. More international aerobatics experience followed in 2008 when he placed 8th at the World Aerobatics Cup in Prague and 23rd in the European Aerobatics Championships – the latter earning him a berth at the Red Bull Air Race Qualification Camp. The camp proved a turning point in Hall’s career, with the pilot successfully completing the training in September 2008 to become the first Australian awarded a coveted Red Bull Air Race Super Licence. An invitation to join the World Championships in 2009 followed two months later, with Hall making the decision to resign from the RAAF and follow a new flight path onto the racing circuit. The choice proved to be a good one, with Hall landing his first podium finish with third place in Portugal in September 2009 – just six months after he had made his debut in the Red Bull series. Not only was he the first Aussie to contest the series, the Merewether man was now also the first pilot to secure a place on the podium in a race during his Rookie year. Another entry into the history books followed, with Hall finishing the series in third place overall – the first Rookie to do so since the Air Race World Championships began in 2005. In his second year in the event his secured his highest individual race finish to date, finishing second in the Perth round of the event in April 2010. Another third placing kept Hall’s momentum going, however, he was only able to complete the series in seventh place overall after missing two rounds.

INTOUCH FEATURE COVERROSS STORY NOBLE MATT HALL Several years out of the event followed before Hall returned to the Red Bull Air Race World Championships in 2014. But it was 2015 that would prove to be his breakout year in the series, with Hall securing his first ever race win in Austria before taking out the final event of the season at Las Vegas with a sensational round of flying, only to miss out on the World Championship crown by a mere five points. Despite the narrow loss, Hall entered the 2016 series ranked number one after the 2015 champion - Great Britain’s Paul Bonhomme – retired in the off-season. While he may have been in prime position, the task ahead was far from easy with 14 of the world’s best pilots preparing to battle each other in eight races across seven countries for the title. An uncharacteristic clipping of the air-filled pylons in the first race of the season took him out of the running early in the piece to finish 9th, while a back injury curtailed his efforts in race two to see him finish outside the podium places once again in 5th. Another disappointing 7th in race three saw him well off the pace in the overall points early in the season – but that’s where things began to turn around for the former Top Gun. Injury-free once more, Hall took to the skies in Budapest for the historic 70th Red Bull Air Race in July. Despite poor weather conditions forcing organisers to cut the race program short, he was able to secure his first podium of the season, finishing third behind overall series leader Matthias Dolderer from Germany and Austria’s Hannes Arch. The trio maintained their hold on the top three spots for the round five race in Ascot, however, this time it was Hall on the top-most step for the winner’s presentation, unstoppable all weekend to prove he was back to his best form. Finally hitting his straps, Hall followed this up with another crucial win in round six, denying Dolderer, a victory in front of his home crowd at the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz, Germany last month. Hall said despite his poor start to the season, he was always confident of being able to turn things around. “It hasn’t been easy but the main thing that helped us was that we knew our processes and practices were solid. They have not changed from last year and if anything have been improved. “We knew we had a fast plane and that I was a fast pilot when healthy so we really just focussed on getting my health back in order and staying confident in what we were doing. “In sport, you can never be guaranteed of a result, but we were convinced that things could turn around, and we’d end up competing for race wins again.” The win in Germany saw Hall overtake Arch and move into second place in the overall standings, 16.5 points behind Dolderer with two races – each worth 15 points to the winner remaining. It sets up a thrilling race to the finish as the series moves to America this month, making its debut above one of the world’s most famous motorsports venues in Indianapolis on October 1-2 before wrapping up once again in the city of bright lights, Las Vegas, on October 15-16. “My battle is with Matthias, and I’m chasing him,” Hall said. “But in the hangars to the other side of me there are about five guys within about five points of each other, I think, so there’ll be a huge amount of pressure there because they’re looking at either side, going, ‘I could slip further down the ranks, or I could leap up a number of positions.’ “Right down at the end of the field you’ve got a couple of rookies who are going, ‘I don’t want to be the guy at the back end here, I’ve got to get every point I can,’ so all the way through the paddock, there are these little battles going on. “My battle is for the world championship. But there are battles all the way through the field.”

While Hall will be feeling plenty of pressure going into the final two races, there’s no doubt that with his background in the RAAF it’s something he’s well equipped to deal with. And although Hall is quick to brush off the notion of him having any unique attributes that allow him to handle these sorts of situations and this level of flying, he is willing to share the “secret weapon” he believes has helped get him to where he is today. “I’m just a normal guy from the Hunter who has worked incredibly hard. I wouldn’t say I have any super talent or anything like that but if there was one attribute that has contributed the most to any success it has been the ability to set a goal and do whatever I could to achieve that goal. “You have to chase your dreams – I’ve had that philosophy since I was a kid and still use it today. “There have been many challenges but I think we all face challenges in our day-to-day lives, and the key is to identify how to accomplish what you need to and get on with it.” Part of this focus includes a commitment to training to ensure his body – and mind – are in peak condition for the intensity of the racing series. “There are a few parts to my training to stay in peak condition as well as mentally at my best. I do a lot of visualisation training, and I have it to the point I can imagine myself in any of the race tracks we compete in and ‘mind-fly’ my way through the track to within a second or less. “It takes a lot of practice, but it really works for me and is something I started doing many years ago when I was in the military. “From a physical standpoint I do a lot of walking, some swimming and time on the bike but then also a huge amount of core work and stability that helps with combatting the G-forces.” But his time in the skies is not all about racing to win. Hall loves nothing more than jumping in a plane and cruising up the coast with his family, including wife Pedita (a fellow RAAF Officer), son Mitchell and step-children Cameron and Amelia.

He also loves to share his passion for flying with others, operating a joy flight business out of his base at Lake Macquarie Airport. While there are a number of other pilots employed to satisfy the thrills of the everyday adrenalin junkie and aviation enthusiast, Hall will also jump in the cockpit for the premium “Matt Hall Exclusive” package, which includes an extreme 20-minute high energy flight in his Extra 300L two-seat aircraft. This takes in everything from some of the advanced aerobatics involved in his airshow routine to a simulation of the Air Racetrack where, for the bravest of the brave, he’ll take them up to 400km/h, experiencing as much as 8Gs. Clearly, too much flying is never enough for Hall, who holds a number of different pilot licences that enable him to fly everything from a glider, ultralight and hang glider, to a powered aircraft, helicopter and military jet. He is passionate about generation aviation and light aircraft and over the years has owned nine aircraft - a Mustang P-51D, a Vans RV-4, an Acrosport II bi-plane, a Cherokee 180C, a Giles 202, a Debonair, an Extra 300L, a Super Cub and his 2014 Race Plane - an MXS-R. And like a proud father being asked who his favourite child is, Hall is reluctant to single out one aircraft from the others as being his favourite. “This is the question I probably get asked the most and to me it is simple – it’s the aircraft I am flying, or dreaming of flying, at any particular time,” he said. “I can get as much joy in my race plane as I can in our old Super Cub. I learnt to hang glide off Newcastle Beach and have flown gliders all over the Hunter Valley before I became a fastjet pilot on the Hornets at Williamtown. All of those things bring me great memories.” Hopefully for Hall, his most excellent memory will come this month in the form of a World Championship title! HOUSE WITH NO STEPS

Christie Dawes knows all too well the important role sport can play in a child’s life. The Merewether woman was just 10-yearsold when she was involved in a car accident that broke her spine and left her a paraplegic. But despite losing the use of her legs, Christie was determined to continue the active lifestyle she had enjoyed before the accident. Two years later, after trying out several different sports, she took up wheelchair racing, inspired by the feats of Australian Paralympian Louise Sauvage at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics. And it wasn’t long before Christie was wearing the green and gold herself, competing at the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta at the age of 16. Fast forward two decades and the 36-year-old is still going strong in the sport, having just returned from her sixth Paralympic Games. Christie will share her stories of life on and off the track this month, when she joins a stellar line-up of sporting guest speakers at a charity lunch raising money to give children with a disability the opportunity to play sport. The event has been organised by House With No Steps and will be held at Merewether Surf House on Friday, October 14 from 12.30pm. Christie will be joined on the panel of special guests by her husband and coach Andrew, who has also just returned from Rio after overseeing the Paralympic campaigns of a number of athletes including his wife and fellow Novocastrian Kurt Fearnley. Adamstown athlete Scott Westcott will have plenty of his own tales to tell about the South American country after the 41-year-old made his long-awaited Games debut in the men’s marathon at the Rio Olympics in August. Another Australian who has clocked up more than his fair share of kilometres over the years will join Scott on the panel, with renowned runner Pat Scammell capping off the athletics representatives at the charity lunch. The Albury-born 1500m specialist competed at both the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, as well as four Commonwealth Games (1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994). 8 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Paralympian Christie Dawes

But the charity lunch won’t just feature stars of the track and field, with a pair of home-grown footballers rounding out the line-up of guest speakers. With the Hyundai A-League kicking off this month and the Westfield W-League season opener scheduled for the start of November, Newcastle Jets skippers Nigel Boogaard (A-League) and Gema Simon (W-League) will be on hand to offer an insight into the club’s prospects for 2016/2017. Former Socceroo David Lowe will be in charge of interviewing the panel of sportspeople while Hunter Sports journalist Mike Rabbitt will take on MC duties for the day. Event organiser and House With No Steps Hunter/Central Coast Community Engagement Manager, Shelley Youman, said they hoped the impressive line-up of speakers would attract a good turn-out for the region’s inaugural charity event. This would, in turn, allow them to give more children with a disability the chance to engage in sport in a fun and safe environment. And rather than just offer a disability-specific program, she said House With No Steps was looking to engage with sporting groups and organisations within the Newcastle region to provide opportunities in community and club-based, inclusive environments. Shelley said they had already identified a number of potential options and had begun talking to providers about a football program, indoor rock climbing and junior sports activities. The disability service provider has also previously been involved with a surfing program, an experience they would like

to repeat, and this summer will again facilitate a number of children to participate in the Nippers program at the Nobbys and Stockton Surf Life Saving Clubs. As a former representative footballer herself, having played with the Matildas from 1995 to 1998, Shelley is a major advocate for the benefits sport provides people of all ages. She said it was important to get kids involved with sport, which would hopefully create that lifelong love of being active. “I think it is crucial,” Shelley said. “Statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show how little adults with a disability play sport – only about 20 percent get out there and have a go at some type of sport. And a lot of people with a disability have issues with their weight and health, and many also suffer from depression. “Sport can help get you fit and healthy, but it can do more than that as well, because once you get out and play sport and exercise, you start to feel better, you meet new people, and your overall wellbeing improves. “A lot of kids with a disability are inactive as well, so if we can start to get kids involved in sport and give them a feel for the different opportunities out there, then they might carry that interest through to when they are adults.” Tickets for the House With No Steps Charity Sports Lunch are on sale through www.tix.yt/hwns-sports-luncheon, with single seats starting at $124.50. Discounts are available for tables of five or 10.

RENEE GEYER Renee Geyer's past is Australian music history, but her career has already spanned four decades and is still going strong. A precocious jazz, blues and soul singer in her late teens, Countdown royalty in her 20's and a string of pop, soul and reggae hits spanning the 70's and 80's were just the beginning. Her LA years in the studio with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sting, Joe Cocker and Chaka Kahn and her 90's renaissance with Paul Kelly are the stuff of music legends. She is a singer, a songwriter, producer and author. Her career began around 1971 in Sydney when a girlfriend took her along to the rehearsal of friends who were forming a band. From there, things started to snowball. Her reputation found its way to America and led to an invitation to record an album in Los Angeles with famed Motown producer Frank Wilson and the rest is history - her career has never stalled. Never one to sit still, Geyer released her frank, life story; Confessions of a Difficult Woman through Harper Collins before releasing the gold selling (and self-produced) album Tenderland in 2003. In 2004 Renee hooked up with Brisbane producer Magoo to co-produce her 21st album Tonight, which received stunning reviews and was nominated for an ARIA award. And in 2005 Renee was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame; a proud occasion in which she joined the ranks of Australia's most respected and accomplished musicians. Whether in the studio or on stage Australia is where Renee Geyer is ‘home’ and she continues to wow audiences with her remarkable voice. Today, listening to Renee Geyer we're experiencing much more than a great voice and song interpreter at the microphone, in front of her band. See for yourself when Renee performs for one night only at Lizottes Newcastle on Friday, November 11th, 2016. For more information or tickets visit www.newcastle.lizottes.com.au

COLOUR RUN //

Keeping it Fresh at

THE HAPPIEST 5KM ON THE PLANET! WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

A trip to the Lake will seem more like a tropical island getaway this month when Australia’s biggest running event series explodes onto a 5km course at Teralba. Thousands of runners are expected to lace up their shoes and pull on their white T-shirts for the festival of fun and fitness known as The Color Run. And this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever, forming part of the Tropicolor World Tour that was created to mark the fifth anniversary since The Color Run was founded in America during May 2011. General Manager of The Color Run in Australia, Luke Hannan, said runners who line up at the Lake Macquarie event on October 16 will be bathed on a tropical array of colours like never before at the all-new Tropicolor Zone, one of the key features of a course dotted with palm trees, inflatable rainbow coloured arches and five different colour zones. Tropical scented bubbles floating throughout the area and island-style music being played throughout the day will see participants walk away from the event feeling as though they have been on a 5km holiday to an island paradise. “We try to change the event up every couple of years to keep it fresh and this year we’ve got our new Tropicolor World Tour, which we’re currently in the middle of,” he said. “We’ve got five different colour zones, which includes an extra colour zone, so we’ll have about 1000kg more colour on the course than we’ve had before. There’s also a really cool new foam zone that doubles the area we had in the past and there will be bubbles out on the course with tropical scents so you’ll get a sense of being in Bali or Hawaii. “Around every corner you turn on the course, there will be another activation designed to make people happy, to make them smile.” 12 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

Ensuring participants have a good time is the number one goal of the event, which dubs itself the ‘Happiest 5km on the Planet’. So it’s little wonder that its family-friendly atmosphere, which caters for people of all fitness levels with a focus on fun rather than who’s the fastest, has seen it grow into the single largest event series in Australia and around the world. Since its inception in America, it has expanded to around 60 countries across the globe, with more than 300 events held each year. More than six million people have taken part in a Color Run around the world since 2011, with Australia more than holding its own in terms of our participation numbers. The Color Run was launched on Australian shores at Flemington Racecourse in November 2012 and more than 600,000 people have taken part in events across the country. In Newcastle alone during 2015, around 11,000 runners participated in the event and Luke said he expected another big turn-out when it returns to the region this month. “The event is just massive, it has grown and grown and grown for us, and Newcastle is unbelievable and has been since the year we started going there. We’re really blessed. We were the first country to take the licence out of America and it’s now in 60 countries, making it the world’s largest event of its type. “It has been responsible for introducing so many people to fun runs – around 60 percent of our runners have never done a fun run before, never even considered doing something like this before, and I think that’s because of its non-threatening nature. It’s not competitive and people get to the end and realise ‘Wow, I’ve just done 5km’. “People use this event as an inspiration for something they thought they could never do before and the amount of families that are doing it is more than ever now.

“The 0-15 age group makes up almost 20 percent of our participants, which is a testament to where the Color Run has gone – we actually stumbled across some figures the other day that shows we are now the biggest kid’s event in Australia. “It’s about getting out and being active, but having fun as well because that’s the best way to introduce people to an active lifestyle.” Of course, the fun doesn’t stop once you’ve notched up that 5km milestone, with participants then invited to take part in the Finish Festival – two hours of non-stop fun at “Rainbow Beach,” an interactive island featuring music, dancing, unique photo opportunities and massive colour throws. The run also has a serious side though, with many runners opting to raise funds for charity as part of their participation. While The Color Run is put on by a for-profit event management company, the event does still partner with eight different charities across the country, and since 2012 has donated more than $1.5 million to worthy causes. Runners who have a particular charity close to their hearts can also nominate to raise funds for their own specific nonprofit organisation once they have registered to take part in the event. “It’s such a great event to be at and to be able to use that event not just to have fun but to raise awareness and give back to the community is a beautiful thing,” Luke said. The Color Run will be held at Tulkaba Park in Teralba on Sunday, October 16, kicking off with a fun Zumba warm-up for participants at 8.20am. The first wave of 500 runners will make their way through the start chute at 8.45am, with additional waves of runners let out onto the course every couple of minutes. The Finish Festival will kick off for the first participants past the post from 9.45am, with the event wrapping up around 11.30am. Entry starts at $55.50 for children aged six to 15 years, while adult tickets cost $65.50. Discounted group tickets can also be purchased for teams of four or more people, or families with two adults and two children, while kids aged five and under are free. Each Color Runner aged six and over will receive a limitededition Tropicolor race shirt, finisher’s medal on a floral-printed ribbon, embroidered headband, temporary tattoos and one packet of colour. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.thecolorrun.com.au/event/lake-macquarie

NEWKULELE FESTIVAL Celebrating Sweet Sounds from Around the Globe It’s not often a seven-year-old can say they shared a festival line-up with some of the foremost musicians of their genre in the world. But that’s exactly what awaits 130 Hunter children aged from 7 to 17 this month when the best local, national and international ukulele players gather in Newcastle for the third Newkulele Festival. To be held from October 21-23 at the Newcastle Jockey Club, the bi-annual event will showcase more than 370 musicians across two stages in a series of performances, concerts and workshops designed to celebrate the sweet sounds of this simple, yet deceptively sophisticated instrument. More than 2000 visitors from regional New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, New Zealand and the USA are expected to converge on Newcastle for the three-day festival. But while performers will travel from Canada, USA, UK, Italy, New Zealand and around Australia to take part, one of the most exciting aspects of this year’s event will be the presence of the youngest musicians on the line-up. Newcastle Ukestra member and organiser of the festival’s youth stage, Dianne Murray, said while a small contingent of school students had been involved in the festival in 2014, there had been a real spike in interest from children wanting to take part this year. “As far as I know it’s the only uke festival in the world to have a stage for youth performers. It’s very exciting – last time we had some students involved but this time we had enough students and schools wanting to take part that we could fill a stage’s schedule on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. “There are so many kids in the area who are learning ukulele and want to perform. They are just so excited. Some of them are seriously good players and others have wonderful vocal harmonies. “I teach quite a few including a group of seven-year-olds, and they are just out of their skins with excitement at the idea of being on stage.

14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

“Part of the fun of learning music is playing for other people, and we are always on the lookout for places for the kids to perform. “The youth stage at the Newkulele Festival is just a brilliant opportunity for the kids to see each other playing and hopefully meet some kids from other schools who they might be able to get together with to play another time.” The student contingent will include several groups from Dudley Public School, performers from public primary and high schools in Warners Bay, Waratah and Wallsend as well as the Catholic school in Swansea. Dianne said ukulele was a popular musical choice for many schools as it is easy for students to learn, while high-quality instruments are also very affordable to buy. But it won’t be just school-aged children strumming to the beat at the Newkulele Festival, with some of the best amateur and professional ukulele players from around the world also on the bill. Festival Chair Christine Garvin said the stellar international line-up includes the man rated as possibly the best ukulele player in the world by the Waikato Times - James Hill - who alongside cellist Anne Janelle will craft a sound that is intricate, enchanting and engaging. “We are excited to have high calibre artists such as awardwinning duo James Hill and Anne Janelle, along with Tyrone and Leslie, The NUKES and Sparrow Folk as part of the program,” she said. “The Newkulele Festival boasts concerts featuring first class international and interstate acts, a variety of workshops

providing teaching and learning experiences and a forum for solo and community group performances.” Workshops held during the Saturday and Sunday will look at everything from ukulele for beginners and Hawaiian-style melodies, to finger picking and strumming techniques and ukulele arrangements. James Hill will also run a one-hour Swing, Ukulele Swing workshop for intermediate players. General admission to the festival is $5 per day, while workshops range from $15 through to $30. The festival will kick off on Friday, October 21 with an opening night concert from 6.30pm, while the gates will open at 9am on Saturday and Sunday. A second concert will also be held on the Saturday night, with tickets to both of these signature events of the festival ranging from $20 for children through to $45 for premium seating. The Newcastle Newkulele Festival is an initiative of the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Folk Club, organised by members of the Newcastle Ukestra. Australia’s favourite country rockers, The Wolfe Brothers, have released their third album This Crazy Life and are gearing up for a massive national tour with a difference to hit the road this October, and playing at Wests New Lambton on October 22nd, 2016. Stephen White says the tour will feature seven acts from three countries for one night only in each of the tour cities. “The new wave of Australian country music artists needs a platform to connect with the Australian public,” he says. “We are behind the times with the public’s perception of what country music is. In America, country music is a force to be reckoned with and every city, large and small, has at least one country music radio station. In fact, there are more country radio stations than pop or rock stations in the USA. Country music has such a broad appeal across America that it is common for country artists to fill football and baseball stadiums regularly in massive urban centres like New York, Boston, and Chicago. Country music is a huge business in America due to its broad appeal in all demographics.” Stephen says the mini travelling festival will showcase what is happening in modern country music. “The idea is to entice people

UNLOCKING THE DOORS The magic and entertainment of The Doors is coming to Lizotte’s Newcastle on Friday 21 October 2016 in an interactive and engaging musical showcase that will transport you back in time. “Unlocking the Doors” – The Australian Doors Experience is a grandstand of music, poetry and drama, that is genuinely all things “Doors.” Particular attention has been paid to replicate both the style and sound of each band member and absolutely nothing is recorded. Everything is live, and the band delivers an authentic sound and a powerhouse performance. The Doors were among the most controversial, influential and unique rock acts of the 1960’s and beyond, mostly because of Morrison’s wild, poetic lyrics and charismatic

but unpredictable stage persona. Unlocking the Doors highlights the band’s chaotic magnetism in a multi-media performance bound to surprise and delight. This unique show takes a holistic and creative approach to your average concert and encapsulates more of what this iconic band was about. Between the musical sets are poetry readings and some sequences from Jim’s post-death poetry album, An American Prayer, which was released by the surviving members. Additionally, the audience can expect the drama and suspense of what Jim used to bring with genuine outbursts and engaging behaviour from the legend himself. A LABOUR OF LOVE

RESTORES A CHEQUERED HISTORY WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN Every antique has a story... a past to be discovered, a background that has the potential to intrigue, excite and even add value. But at Coliseum Antiques it’s not just the stock that has a tale to tell – the building housing the antique centre may well have the most interesting story of all. Built in 1921 on what is now the corner of Maitland Road and Corona Street in Mayfield, the building was a commanding addition to the streetscape. It was owned by Michael and Laura Maley, who ran it as a mixed goods store selling everything from groceries and hardware supplies, to kerosene lamps, clothing and hats made by Mrs. Maley herself. Later becoming Newcastle’s first self-serve supermarket, The Coliseum was operated successfully for many years by the Maleys with help from their only son Leo, who continued to run it following the deaths of his mother in 1951 and father in 1967. But it was at this time that the story of The Coliseum and its owner began to unravel. A highly educated man with a Masters degree in Science from Sydney University, the deaths of his parents saw the Mayfield identity become increasingly reclusive, eccentric and anti-authoritarian. He was renowned for his bitter legal battles in which he represented himself against everyone from Newcastle City Council over the demolition of the shop’s dilapidated awning, to the tax office for failing to lodge tax returns, and was sentenced

to a number of jail terms including an 18-month stretch in 1983 when he was 63. Despite the rumours of his wealth – confirmed following his death at the age of 80 in December 2000 - Leo failed to maintain the three residential properties he was left by his parents or The Coliseum itself, which deteriorated to the point of dereliction. The once impressive façade of the Mayfield building became severely dilapidated - broken down and boarded up and the inside was even worse as Leo lived his final years surrounded by squalor, without even the basic necessities of power, water or a sewerage connection. He warred with his neighbours, who accused him of emptying sewage waste into the drains and garbage bins outside his property, and refused to pay his bills, which eventually saw him declared bankrupt three days before he died. While Leo’s many exploits lived on to become almost legend, The Coliseum that he loved was also reborn following his death thanks to the efforts of its current owners George Burke and Bronwyn Humphreys. They purchased the building in 2002 with the dream of turning it into an antique centre and spent the next two years restoring and extending it in what proved a major labour of love, not just for the couple, but their friends, families, and neighbours as well.

“The restoration was a huge project, to say the least. There had been no maintenance done on the building for 50 years or so. The glass and leadlight windows had long since gone and the frontage was completely boarded up, Newcastle Council had removed the awning after the earthquake in 1989, the internal ceilings were falling down, the paint was peeling, and the place was filthy. “The attached residence was uninhabitable, and the grounds were a jungle. The first thing George did was to buy a ream of butcher’s paper. He drew up the plans for the antique centre himself as we couldn’t afford an architect,"she said. “With the help of a draughtsman who lived nearby the plans were submitted to Newcastle Council, and after many months and lots of toing and froing, the plans for the extended building

and residence were accepted. We needed to double the size of the existing building to make the concept of an antique centre work. “We employed a builder, but George did a lot of the work himself to keep the costs down. He worked 12 hour (and longer) days, seven days a week for two years. “We were lucky with some of the recycled materials that we used. The floorboards, bearers and joists for the extension came from the Johns Department Store in Hunter Street that was being transformed into apartments at the time we were doing our renovations. And we got the pressed metal ceiling from the old Winns Department Store that was also being remodelled. “Thankfully throughout the two years, we had help. A good friend, Virginia Ross (now a dealer with us), generously remade all the lovely stained glass panels. They are exactly as they were when they were first installed in 1921. “A lady who lived nearby The Coliseum asked George if she could help us. She volunteered her mornings for more than six months, painting the banners in the windows, architraves and skirting boards. Her name is Emerald Springs, and we became good friends. “Ian Cohen also worked with George throughout the twoyear process. He was an ex-sailor, and his skills were put to

good use. He rigged a ship’s pulley to get the incredibly heavy recycled leadlight windows into place in the extension. “George’s son Jason also worked alongside him for a year. It was a team effort, along with friends and some of the new dealers who rallied to the call when we had working bees and during the frantic last few weeks before we opened the shop.” With the building restored to its former glory, George and Bronwyn opened Coliseum Antiques in October 2004. Building the business up during the past 12 years, it is now the largest antique centre in Newcastle with 26 dealer spaces operated by 33 different antique traders. As you’d expect, the centre’s stock is always changing, with the traders offering everything from furniture, ceramics, crystal and glassware to jewellery, collectibles, toys, clothing, clocks, artworks and Asian and French artefacts. The shop’s large collection of vintage radios – lovingly restored to working order by George – is a feature of the shop, as is the feeling you get when you step inside and immerse yourself in the antique and vintage wares. “I think that Coliseum Antiques is a special place because of its ambience. The building is now a lovely space and is perfect for showcasing antiques and old wares. “The place definitely has a calming influence on people. Customers tell us that they come in to wander around and to

de-stress. One customer came in late one Sunday afternoon before she was to go on an overseas trip the next day. She came to quieten her mind and relax so she could sleep."

I believe that some people pick up on the vibes from the antiques. Many of our customers are long-time collectors, always looking for the next special piece. “And lots of customers are bargain hunters - and why not? In a shop as big as ours there are always well-priced items and indeed bargains. “It’s the thrill of the hunt that keeps people coming back to antique shops. Finding that unique, just right piece for yourself or for someone else who you know will appreciate what you have found, is a thrill. “Really, there is something of interest for most people and just browsing in an antique centre is a good way to pleasantly while away a few hours.”

STRENGTH in Numbers WORDS BRENDAN MCINERNEY

When you first start going to the gym, it can be tough to know how to go about your workouts, and unfortunately a lack of direction can often be the difference between success and failure in achieving your goals. Something I see so regularly in the typical gym goer is a huge spike in motivation when beginning their fitness goals, but after a month or two, that motivation diminishes. Usually from boredom, a lack of knowledge on how to use the gym, or what to do once they are there. The most effective way I have seen to sustain motivation for extended periods of time is twopronged!

Follow an exercise program. Firstly, following an exercise program has many benefits. It gives your daily workout a purpose, and walking into the gym with a plan will help you make the most of each visit. No more wandering around using whatever machine is available doing a few reps here and there. The correct exercise program will also help you achieve your goals much faster by using your gym time much more efficiently. Because let’s be honest, most of us only have a window of about an hour a day before we have to race to work, drop the kids off at school or squeezing it in after work on the way home before dinner. Using a workout program is the smartest way to utilise this time. A program will also help you to be more consistent. Sit down and examine your schedule and lock in set times in the week you can definitely keep every week. If this happens

to be 3 times a week, this is okay, but make sure you keep those 3 times every single week. Book it in like an appointment, write in in your weekly planner, then tick each one off as you go so you can visually see your consistency.

Work out with a group. The second, and I believe the most powerful way of sustaining motivation, is to work out with a group of people. Typically within a group setting, you will always see a trainer giving instruction, helping with technique and pushing you, even on your worst day. Trainers will also help to keep you accountable, check up to see where you’ve been if you’ve missed a few sessions and help keep you on track. The most powerful part of working out within a group is the people that you are working out with. These other group members are going through the same workout, the same pain and the same struggles, usually with very similar goals. This 'shared pain' creates a bond and builds friendships within the group, making coming into the gym for your daily workout a lot of fun. When your workout is fun, that’s when you will learn to love it. It will become the highlight of your day making it a non-negotiable in your daily life. Your friends will help keep you on track and make the gym environment much more comfortable. Most facilities offer this kind of service, combining a great program for overall health and fitness normally geared towards weight loss while performing it in a group setting. Do your research, as most facilities will offer a trial. Go in and do a few sessions, get to know the trainer and some of the other members and make sure it’s an environment you feel comfortable and welcome. You want this to be somewhere you want to be daily so you’re excited to get in and do your daily workout. Don’t forget at the end of the day this should be fun! So get out there - jump in a class, meet some new people and get fit doing it. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 23

MANAGING HSC STRESS...

Naturally!

WORDS SARA KNIGHT Adv Dip Western Herbal Medicine, Adv Dip Nutritional Medicine (current), Adv Dip Naturopathy (current), Diploma of Counselling (current).

With the Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams this month and the holiday season just around the corner, it is important to start thinking now about how best to manage stress, especially how to help our young adults facing such a demanding and critical series of tests. Our young adults are already stressed. Statistics show our young adults are more stressed than adults, have the highest rates of anxiety and depression and 80% believe that stress is impacting their health. On the other hand, our young adults emphasise a healthy lifestyle and are more likely to have a plan to make positive change than other age groups. Signs of stress include anxiety, tension, procrastinating, fatigue, insomnia and feeling overwhelmed. Stress is a natural physiological reaction designed to make us perform better, however, chronic stress though can lead to obesity, depression and low immunity. So here are some tips on how best to help our students facing the HSC, as well as anyone else feeling highly stressed: Exercise – exercise causes the release of the feel-good endorphins, an easy way to release tension. Doing exercise outside is even better as we get Vitamin D boosting sunshine, plus studies show that being amongst nature is an excellent mood booster Sleep – sleep is important for body repair and restoration but also for immunity and mental health. Although natural for some to forgo sleep in an effort to have more time to study, it is crucial

The Best 5 Supplements to Improve Memory that our hardworking students get much-needed rest. Aim for at 8-10 hours each night. Eat nutritious foods – much like sleep, a healthy diet is quickly forgotten in the throes of studying and testing. But having healthy foods that nourish the body is so important during periods of high stress. Healthy proteins, good fats, green leafy vegetables plus colourful fruit will all help fuel the mind and body. Get organised – having a manageable plan, setting goals and appropriate rewards all help to contribute to lower levels of stress. The surety of how best to handle the many demands of the HSCs together with rewards to acknowledge the hard work put forward can all help lower stress levels. Seek out help – there are times when the stress becomes unmanageable, and additional help and support are needed. Possibly a chat and coffee with a sympathetic friend or an afternoon at the beach may be enough. Other times, the guidance and support of a counsellor may be needed. Regardless, reach out for the help needed to support you through these and other stressful times. There is a great deal of support for stress through diet, nutrition, herbal supplements and lifestyle changes. It’s Australia’s Turn to Vote…

On Our New Monopoly Board! The Australian edition of the world’s most popular board game, Monopoly, is about to undergo a face- lift and Australians are being given a chance to shape history and decide what will go on the board! The 2017 edition will showcase Australia’s favourite locations from each state or territory – as voted by the public. Together with unique Australia-themed tokens, this edition of Monopoly Australia will be a must-have for every fan of the game. Hasbro Australia invited each state and territory’s tourism office to nominate five key locations and attractions people know and love. Only two or three destinations in each state or territory will make it onto the board, and the final selection is being left entirely up to the Australian public. It is envisaged the board will feature some of Australia’s bestloved landmarks – from the lush tropical landscape of Queensland to the remote Northern Territory, the scenic terrain of Tasmania and

the immense beauty of Western Australia – each promising to reflect popular destinations in Australia today. Voting goes live from November 1st, 2016. Simply visit www.monopolyaustralia.com.au and vote for your favourite locations and attractions, casting one vote, per state and territory, per day, to determine which destinations will achieve a spot on the all-new Monopoly Australia board – due for release July 2017. The state or territory with the most amount of votes will secure the coveted dark blue Mayfair position. But hurry! Voting closes November 22, 2016. Great Ocean Road Credit Tourism Victoria

ESS STEAMED WHOLE BREAM WITH GREEN CHILLI & CORIANDER Steaming is a quick and simple way to cook whole plate-sized fish. You’ll need two bamboo steamer baskets to hold four fish; they can be stacked on top of each other over the wok and should be rotated half way through the cooking to ensure the fish cook evenly. While some people may be daunted at first by tackling a whole fish, many insist that fish cooked on the bone has the best flavour. Serves 4.

Health Benefits of Seafood Australians are increasingly conscious of the importance of sensible eating habits. A well-balanced, nutritious diet and regular exercise are vital factors in a healthy lifestyle. This month we asked Robert Gauta of Newcastle’s Commercial Fishermans Co-Operative about the health benefits of eating seafood and also managed to grab his favourite recipe. Here’s what Robert says are the top 5 reasons to eat seafood (local seafood in fact!): SEAFOOD IS LOW IN FAT - Seafood averages less than 2% fat. For slimmers, seafood is all good news. All seafood is low in kilojoules, with fewer kilojoules than even the leanest meat or chicken. And of course, with seafood, you don't need to trim any fat. Just grill, barbecue, bake, steam, poach or microwave seafood to keep a low kilojoule count. FISH IS LOW IN CHOLESTEROL - Cholesterol is an essential part of all living animal tissue. But levels of cholesterol can be too high if we eat too much-saturated fat. Seafood has very little fat of any kind and what it does have is mostly unsaturated fat.

Eating fish two or three times a week can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. SEAFOOD IS HIGH IN PROTEIN - Seafood is an excellent source of top quality protein and compares favourably with meat and chicken. SEAFOOD IS HIGH IN VITAMINS & MINERALS - Seafood is an excellent source of many essential minerals, including iodine, zinc, potassium and phosphorus. It is also rich in many vitamins, especially the B group. OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS - Omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fat and are essential nutrients that play many critical roles in our bodies. And, just like minerals and most vitamins, our body cannot make them. Long-chain Omega-3s are found in oily fish, non-oily fish and shellfish, and to a lesser extent in meats and eggs. Long-chain Omega-3s are used efficiently in the body. DHA (a long-chain Omega-3 fatty acid) is a major building block of the brain, and the retina in the eye is very concentrated in DHA. Other vital organs, such as the heart, are rich in long chain Omega-3s. Research has also shown that regular consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of developing Macular Disease (MD). The MD Foundation encourages people to eat fish regularly to ensure that their intake of Omega-3s is adequate. For information on Macular Disease visit the Foundation's website at www.mdfoundation.com.au. For more detailed information on Omega-3s, visit the Omega-3 Centre's website at www.omega-3centre.com

4 plate-sized bream, scaled, gilled and gutted 2/3 cup fish sauce 1/3 cup lime juice 2 teaspoons grated palm sugar 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 4 small green chillies, finely sliced ½ bunch coriander leaves, roughly chopped 2 lemons, zested Steamed jasmine rice, to serve • Rinse the belly cavity of the fish, rub away any black lining and pat dry with paper towel. Check for any remaining scales. Cut several deep slashes into the thickest part of both sides of the fish. • Half fill a wok or large saucepan with water and bring to the boil. • Place a plate in 2 steamer baskets. • Combine fish sauce, lime juice, palm sugar, garlic, chilli and half the coriander. • Place 2 fish in each basket and stack baskets over wok or saucepan, cover and steam for 10-12 minutes until the fish are opaque and flesh flakes easily when tested with a fork, rotating the baskets after 6 minutes. • Remove the plates from the baskets. Place fish on serving plates, pour fish sauce mixture over them and sprinkle with remaining coriander and lemon zest. Serve immediately with steamed jasmine rice. Alternative species: barramundi, morwong, snapper, ocean perch.

Investing in the Future and Keeping an Eye on the Now WORDS SCOTT WEBSTER After the sudden and tragic death of Trevor Drayton in January 2008 a number of people from the wine, hospitality and business sector created a scholarship in his name. In the first instance, it was about our need to honour and respect a man who had done so much for the Hunter. It was also a way of creating a fitting legacy. Now, almost nine years later, we have taken another important step to ensure this legacy continues. In 2016, the Trevor Drayton Scholarship became part of the Hunter TAFE Foundation. It is fitting that Hunter TAFE Foundation is administering the award. In giving students and recent graduates direct access through the foundation’s quality award system, we hope to increase the exposure of the scholarship. In an important step forward, the scholarship has been extended to include three areas of expertise. Grants will now be awarded for culinary, hospitality and winemaking. Each scholarship is valued at $2500 and is used to purchase resources and assist students to access work placement experience. The scholarships are open to current and recent

Hunter TAFE students who demonstrate a genuine and active interest in advancing their career in the wine or hospitality industry. Trevor was an industry icon who carried his family’s winemaking tradition with dignity. The Trevor Drayton Scholarship was created to assist those starting out in the industry to hopefully pursue the level of excellence Trevor embodied. Hunter TAFE has produced some of the industry’s most successful practitioners and this new partnership between industry and TAFE is a positive way of ensuring Trevor’s legacy can help build the future of our industry. Inaugural Scholarship recipient and Hunter TAFE alumnus, Rebecca Good, used the scholarship to travel to Singapore where she was given the opportunity to undertake work experience at the famous Asian city’s best-known 4 ½-star restaurants. After this opportunity to travel to Singapore, Rebecca was offered the role of restaurant supervisor at McWilliam's Mount Pleasant where she worked for six months before being promoted to venue manager. This is exactly the type of opportunity we hope the scholarships create. The connectivity of TAFE and the support of our industry should enable this over the longer term. While it is incredibly important for us to invest in our future and encourage young people to pursue a career in food and wine, we should not lose sight of the present. Chefs Tim Montgomery and Oliver Ferguson at Carrington

Place have returned to the Hunter after a number of years working around Australia. When you ask each of them why the answer is not that surprising – it’s home (and that’s something that all Novocastrians understand and get). But, a bit more probing and you will find that for both of them it is about opportunity. Indeed it was the same for me after working around the world for many years. The opportunity to work with some of the industry’s best, the opportunity to create something new, the opportunity to educate customers and take them on a journey, and most importantly the opportunity to collaborate. Our region is doing some amazing things in the hospitality space. Take a look at intouch magazine or any of the region’s other media and the pages are full of tantalising culinary and wine delights with the words from what I consider to be some of the world’s best chefs and winemakers. The Hunter is an amazing place. Get out there and try some of what it offers, and when you do, spare a thought for what has gone before and what today’s investment will do for its future.

Introducing the Hunter Valley's

World class photographers David Oliver and Peter Eastway are the only two Grand Master photographers in NSW, and they have both exhibited their work alongside the work of a whole host of professional and amateur photographers at the Upper Hunter Exhibition “People and Places.” The show brought the world, through photography, to Gresford and not only did visitors see these incredible images up close they were also given the opportunity to talk to the photographers and find out the story behind the photographs. As major sponsors of the event, Emmas Cottage Vineyard has been awarded the rights to exhibit 50 of these amazing photographs throughout October at their vineyard gallery in Lovedale, Hunter Valley. David Oliver was one of the few photographers in the world to be invited back to Rwanda for the 10 year anniversary of the horrific genocide carried out in that country. The photos taken by David are amazing and confronting.

Image by David Oliver from the series ‘Paris’ (2011).

History is recorded through photography, we have all seen photos depicting breathtaking scenery, stunning wildlife and award-winning photos and People and Places shows many of these. The Exhibition opens at Emmas Cottage Vineyards on September 30th and will continue throughout October. For more information and opening hours, call the Cellar Door on 4998 7734.

Griffith (2014) and Orange (2015) have set a really high standard, but the Hunter is primed to exceed both, with judges critiquing the largest range of NSW wines ever, representing all of the 14 NSW wine regions. The local Hunter wine industry is thrilled to host the event this year and get to showcase the flourishing Cessnock, Singleton and Wine Country Alliance, which is working towards the benefit of the whole region; a region that embraces wine tourism and its economic importance. Since its inception in 1996, the NSW Wine Awards has been highlighting the very best of our local wines and assisting NSW winemakers perfect and promote their wines. The show allows large and small wineries to compete against each other and gives all a shot at a gold or silver medal, or one of the 18 trophies on offer.

Balloon Aloft will once again host its annual Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta, and organisers are expecting this year’s event to be the biggest yet. Over thirty hot air balloonists from around the country will take to the skies in a beautiful display of colour on the weekend of 22 and 23 October. Joining them will be local pilot and two-time Women’s World Hot Air Ballooning Champion Nicola Scaife. With beautiful weather conditions usually experienced in the Valley during springtime, those taking part in this year’s event are expecting to take in some spectacular views. The company is hoping to have close to 200 ballooning enthusiasts take part as

passengers on board one of the 30 balloons flying in the Fiesta. There are limited flight vouchers available so for those people interested in taking part they are encouraged to book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Celebrations will continue afterwards at Peterson House with a gourmet breakfast and Champagne tasting. “There will be live music and a real party atmosphere,” said Nicola. Whether flying or just wanting the chance to view the Fiesta from the ground, passengers and spectators will have an early start meeting at Peterson House at around 5am. Darkest Place WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN Imagine waking with the feeling that someone is watching you. Imagine opening your eyes and seeing a stranger’s shadow just beside your bed. Just the thought of it is enough to send a chill down anyone’s spine – which, of course, is exactly what Lake Macquarie author Jaye Ford was hoping for when she penned her latest thriller Darkest Place. Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as a “well crafted... psychological chiller,”Jaye’s fifth thriller in five years tells the story of Carly Townsend, a woman desperate to start over after a decade of tragedy and pain, who’s dream of a new life is shattered when she is repeatedly woken to find the shadow of a man standing next to her bed watching over her. It is a premise that taps into an almost primal fear of being watched without knowing it - that sixth sense that sends your heart racing and causes the hairs on your arms to stand on end. Jaye said after writing several novels where the “bad guy” was at a distance, she was interested in how her main character would react when the threat was far too close for comfort. And given her background as a journalist, it is little wonder part of her inspiration for the set-up came from real life. “Any story is the joining together of lots of different ideas,” Jaye told intouch Magazine. “I had written a couple of stories where the bad guy was kind of at a distance, the unknown thing way out there freaking the 38 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

main character out, and I really wanted to write a story where the bad person was really in her face and explore what that would be like. “So my immediate thought was ‘What if someone was getting into your bedroom?’ because that’s in a sense your most intimate space, especially in the dark. For a woman on her own, the thought of somebody being in your bedroom when you wake up is terrifying. “When I started to do a little bit of research for the novel trying to work out how it might work I came across lots of stories of that happening.

“But I live here, and there are some fantastic places in the Hunter. You’ve got hills, farms, beaches, city spaces and more regional spaces, so I thought I’m going to set it somewhere I know and love like the Americans do. “I wasn’t really expecting to sell anything, but that first book sold right through Europe, and I was getting some really interesting responses from the publishers over there saying readers actually really liked the ‘exotic’ settings (which I always think is really funny). But I guess if you live in Europe the Australian bush and the beach and all that kind of stuff is really exotic.” While Jaye may have not expected her first book to sell – it took her 10 years of writing and rejections before she was A friend sent me an article from a newspaper finally published – the reaction to her work since then has been in Queensland where the police had put overwhelmingly positive, with her five thrillers selling worldwide, published in nine different languages. an identikit photo out of this man who had She has also published one romantic comedy under the been breaking into homes. Although where exactly is never actually mentioned, anyone who knows that area kind of knows the warehouses there and the harbour where a bit of it is set.” Jaye said while many Australian thrillers at the time she began writing were set in the major cities, she was inspired to use the Hunter as her backdrop by the work of her American counterparts. “When I first started writing crime I was reading a lot of American crime and the authors were setting it in regional areas where they grew up or where they were living,” she said. “In Australia at that time most of the settings for crime stories were in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or the outback.

There are innumerable published books and articles on Leadership, making it one of the most examined topics in the modern age. Yet for all the available information, leadership continues to be somewhat of an enigma. Without wanting to add to the existing plethora of commentaries, perhaps there are a few fundamental themes that speak to the contemporary needs of communities, schools and workplaces and may, therefore, serve as a relevant reminder of what is important. One of the enduring themes of leadership is that of the charismatic leader. Charismatic leaders attract followers by virtue of their personality and often their looks. They are able to inspire and motivate people, and people like to identify with them and be around them. Many military, political and business figures have laid claim to charismatic leadership. The idea of charismatic leadership rests on the assumption that a single leader is equipped with all of the answers. However, the idea that any individual is all knowing holds traps for both leaders and followers. The story of The Emporer’s New Clothes provides a timeless portrayal of how this can play out. Understanding the difference between leadership and management is useful in getting to the heart of leadership. Management is about WHAT needs to be done, whereas leadership is about HOW it gets done. Management is about the TASK, whereas leadership is about PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIPS. Leadership is about achieving results through people. This requires an understanding of people, but it also requires an understanding of self. It’s also about maintaining a balance between positive assertiveness and being able to hold one’s ego in check. Jim Collins, the author of Good to Great, described the most effective leaders as “those who are able to channel their ego needs away from themselves into the larger goal of building a great company.” Collins says that two characteristics stand out in distinguishing these leaders – willpower

and humility. The idea of a quiet, determined leader doesn’t actually align with the concept of the charismatic leader, or the expectations imposed on leaders to be powerful. A role of leadership is to convey hope and to be able to communicate that in a way that makes sense to others and inspires them to put in the effort needed to achieve common goals. Leaders need to be able to bring others with them. This requires a leader to have empathy regarding others’ perspectives, rather than label them as resistant to change. Behaviours likely to impede leadership effectiveness include risk aversion, personal arrogance and insensitivity, an overly controlling leadership style and reluctance to deal with difficult people issues. Positive leaders: • Have a good sense of who they are and the capacity for reality testing. They take responsibility for their own actions and do not blame others for setbacks. • Are passionate about what they do. They know how to manage anxiety, do not easily lose control and do not resort to impulsive acts. • Are able to establish and cultivate relationships; they see themselves as part of a larger group and know how to use help and advice. • Are able to reframe experiences in a positive way and maintain a sense of hope. Because no individual leader can know it all, leadership can be more effective when leadership is shared. Therefore, building effective leadership teams is a worthwhile goal. Because there are many forces at play in large corporate leadership development programs, they may not provide a safe environment for leadership challenges to be explored in an open and honest way. This can render participation in these programs as being a bit like a “sheep-dip” with a networking opportunity. Smaller, privately owned and not-for-profit organisations can use a more individualised and tailored approach to leadership development that examines leadership in a sensitive way that provides a safe environment for learning. Given that small business is the most predominant form of business in Australia, leadership can play a significant role in building the social, human and financial capital that sustains communities. In this context, the Hunter region provides an interesting microcosm for growing aspirational leaders who can harness and develop business ideas, as part of the transition to the knowledge economy. FAMILY + COMMUNITY //

A Helping Hand for Victims of

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN In tough times, it can make all the difference to know there is someone out there who has ‘got your back.’ For those caught up in the cycle of domestic violence, that knowledge can mean the difference between remaining trapped within that toxic relationship and breaking free in search of a better life. There are countless workers in frontline services ready to offer shelter, counselling and support to the women and children fleeing from these dangerous domestic situations. But there is also a growing band of ‘Sistas’ in the Hunter keen to show these victims of violence that they too have ‘got their backs’ – fundraising to help provide the essentials they need to start again and raising awareness of the message that domestic violence is not acceptable. They are the supporters and founders of the Got Your Back Sista charity, a Newcastle-based collective working to ensure violence does not become the new ‘normal’ in our society. Officially registered at the beginning of this year, it has been running in a more informal way for several years as a spin-off of The Sista Code, an online community founded by Newcastle photographer Melissa Histon through which women can uplift, support and inspire each other. Initially set up as a Facebook page and blog in 2014, The Sista Code gained immediate traction with like-minded women across the Hunter and around the world, with the social media site now followed by almost 16,000 people. Melissa said she created The Sista Code after returning from Nepal, where she had been part of a documentary team capturing the atrocities of the human trafficking of women and children. Inspired by a need to “do something good”, it seems only natural that the eventual extension of that was for Melissa to 40 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

create a mechanism through which she and others could help some of the most vulnerable “sistas” in the Hunter community those experiencing domestic violence. “When I got back from Nepal I thought I need to do something good in the world, something positive and uplifting. It started out as Facebook and the blog and then last year someone suggested we should formalise the fundraising we were doing through events (into the charity),” she said. From the beginning, the events The Sista Code organised or became associated with helped raise funds to support the victims of domestic violence. The Got Your Back Sista charity now works in collaboration with local refuges to provide women with vouchers and store credits to purchase essential items that will help in the establishment of a new and safe home for themselves and their children. “We get a couple of referrals a week from different charities and refuges to provide assistance to women. We then look at the best way that we can assist that person, based on certain criteria. The next thing we’re going to look at is how we can support those children of domestic violence to stay in school because that’s such an important part of the journey too,” Melissa said. Their fundraising efforts to date have allowed the organisation to provide about $40,000 in support to vulnerable women in the Hunter, including items such as beds, refrigerators, household consumables and kitchen appliances. Melissa said she is thrilled with the level of support Got Your Back Sista has received from both men and women in the community and stressed that while she may have been responsible for creating The Sista Code, it has been the work of many that has allowed them to achieve what they have to date. “I was away at a conference recently and when I got back I found out that a group of women from Newcastle had organised

a race day at Tuncurry and raised $9000 for the charity. They worked for months to organise it, they had a huge marquee with a lot of people, and they did that simply because they believe in the message and the work that we are trying to do. I’m so blown away by people’s kindness and generosity (in donating to Got Your Back Sista),"she said. “I was just a conduit, an individual who had an experience (that led to the creation of The Sista Code and Got Your Back Sista) – it’s everybody else that really makes this happen, and that’s a beautiful thing that’ll keep growing and be good for our community.” Outside of raising funds, the charity’s other main goal is to help raise awareness about domestic violence within the community. To that end, Got Your Back Sista organised their biggest community event to date late month – ‘1000 People, 1 Voice’. Held at Hunter Stadium on September 3, it saw hundreds of Hunter people from all different sectors of the community come together in a show of solidarity and support for the message that domestic violence is not acceptable. “We want to work with employers, retailers, community groups, local clubs, all levels of government and interested members of the public,” Melissa said. “Our shared goal is to stop the acceptance of violence across our world. Given that most of us work with, live near, or are related to someone who has experienced violence in their home or in their lives, it is not someone else’s problem. “This is our region’s problem and we must do everything in our power to stop it. One more incidence of violence in our community is not acceptable.” Recent figures indicate that one in six people within the Hunter will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. In the last financial year alone, they were about 2900 cases reported in the Hunter Region, although this is thought to represent only a portion of incidents that actually occur each year. Melissa said photographs and video footage taken at the ‘1000 People, 1 Voice’ event would be used in social media campaigns and a television commercial to ensure the message continues to be spread throughout the community. “Fifty years ago people just didn’t talk about domestic violence – but now it is an issue out there in the media and in the community and we need to keep talking about it,” she said.

Our main messages are clear – violence is not normal and domestic violence is NOT acceptable. “If we keep getting the message out there then hopefully the perpetrators might hear it and understand what they are doing is wrong, and the women experiencing domestic violence might also hear it and understand that domestic violence is not normal, it’s not ok.” As a mother, Melissa knows she can also help by talking to her children about the issue so that the next generation grow up knowing that domestic violence is not acceptable. “I’ve talked to my son about the fact that violence is not okay, that you should treat people with kindness, generosity and compassion,” she said. “That’s the conversation we all need to have with our kids because that’s the world we want to live in.” Anyone interested in supporting Got Your Back Sista can find out more details and information on how to donate by visiting www.thesistacode.com/gotyourbacksista

5 Tips to Help You Make the Right Decision

IT’S SPRING

Say Goodbye To Your Old Sofa! WORDS DEBORAH BARTLETT insideout Newcastle Spring is the chance to say goodbye to the winter blues and embrace the warm sunshine both inside and out. Warmer weather makes us feel like acting on some long thought about changes for our home. Some things suddenly can’t be put off anymore! You look at that sofa again and decide, the old sofa needs to go. It is sometimes like saying goodbye to an old jumper that is comfortable and still looks good, but is a bit outdated, or one that is so worn out, it just can't be rescued. 44 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

1) Establish the purpose for your sofa. Is your sofa for sitting around and chatting, watching television or curling up and reading a book (I love the feather and polyfill for a snuggly seat you don’t want to move from). Your sofa may need to double as a bed for extra guests. You can also get beautiful bench seat sofas for the dining table. 2) Now you know the purpose, choose the style. The style needs to suit your home and the room. The placement in the room will need to be considered before your decision. Narrower seats are easier to sit on for relaxed conversation. If wider seating, have plenty of cushions to help visitors sit forward. Conversations will flow if you can sit comfortably and not feel like you are lying back too far. Position the seating so all guests can sit around and not strain their necks to see everyone. In the media room a wide sofa the whole family can chill out on is a great choice (also an extra bed if needed). A modular configuration or a chaise will add to the space for lounging. Most of all, ask yourself 'is it comfortable?' The instant you sit down you will know if it is the right fit. 3) Back cushions and seat pads. Comfort and durability are the keys to a quality sofa. The feel of a couch comes down to personal choice, and that is why on offer are selections of firmness through different types of cushioning - feather and polyfill, feather wrapped, poly wrapped, etc. Some companies such as Molmic (Australian - Hand Made sofas) treat their foams to eliminate odors and dust mites for people suffering from allergies or Asthma (this also offers

lasting protection against mould, mildew, and bacteria for healthier living and is supported by the Asthma Foundation). Ask the questions - what other materials are used to support the foam? Are springs and webbing used to add to the resilience of the seating and back cushions? Are the cushions reversible so you can turn them over and add to the longevity? Sofas are also available with spring backs and no back cushions. Comfort is a very personal issue, and we like to take a very personal approach when helping our customers choose. 4) The frame Ask questions about the frames. Are they hardwood and sourced from responsibly managed forests or reclaimed timbers? (Pine is too soft, and the structure will sag after a short time). Are the joints mortise and tenon? (This is a traditional manufacturing technique used for strength in joints). Timber blocks are also utilised in the corners for added strength. Some sofas also use metal to help with the strength of the frame. Camerich is a brand that does this. If a company can show attention to detail from the inside to outside you know it is made to last. 5) Leather, fabric or removable covers. Look at all options available for your chosen sofa - there is usually a lot of choice. Leather lovers may just change their minds. Sofas are something we look forward to crashing out on at the end of the day. Buying a quality sofa, the best our budget can afford is a very worthwhile investment.

DESIGN TREND

The colour brown is enjoying a huge resurgence in popularity. The beautiful warmer shades of golds coppers are blending with some beautiful chocolate browns for a ‘natural’ feel – you will notice this when shopping for that new sofa – so jump on in and be a trendsetter!

Easy Spring Updates for your HOME!

Want to refresh your home for Spring but don’t have the time, energy or budget for a major renno? Here’s 10 quick tips for updating your space:

6. New rugs can change the entire look of your space! Move away from the dark traditional patterns and textures and look for stripes, polka dots, and Kandinsky-esque styles.

1. Time to paint those bland winter walls! Neutral tones are just fine but add in some of the cool blues and greens that are making a statement this Spring. Pastels are the spring and summer trend for this year.

7. Love your furniture but looking for a change? Slipcovers are still the way to go! Solids are always safe, but if you want to branch out, a lot of the light coloured damasks are coming back in. Again, if you want to be trendy, go with greens and blues - light to bright colours. If you know your taste, then just be creative with it!

2. Clear the clutter! Time for spring cleaning. Get to those scary spots (under the bed, closets, storage) and throw away all that old junk that you don't need. 3. Splurge on some new artwork. Whether it's a light-hearted oil painting, a sleek sculpture, or a Monet piece you've been eyeing for a year, reinvent your space!

8. If you can manage to swing it, change out a few of your side tables with lighter coloured woods or glass tops. 9. Change your dishware for the season! Use fun, bright colours and chic designs on pottery or glass. Tangerines, ocean tones, hot pinks and purples!

4. New accessories! Reframe your photos with more attractive casings. Heavy woods and metals are out for the spring. Change up that china vase, try blown glass, recycled glass cobalt, or topaz! There are a variety of colours and shapes to choose from. Throw pillows can bring any colour into your room or out of your artwork.

10. If nothing else, open up your space and add a splash of colour with fresh flowers. They are at their best now and the colours are the inspiration for modern colour trends. House plants and foliage of any kind (even if it's faux) are a must in your spring space!

5. Change your window treatments. Lighter fabrics such as satin, chiffon, hand painted or dyed silks, are all in this spring. The colours are zesty, and the look is fresh!

So there you have it! Spring-summer 2016 is the time for reinventing and refreshing! Use your invigorated senses to inspire your dwellings. Happy Spring!
