The Magical Stage Adaptation of Possum Magic is Coming to Newcastle!

Monkey Baa Theatre Company is delighted to present the magical stage adaptation of Mem Fox and Julie Vivas’ Possum Magic at the Civic Theatre Newcastle from 22 to 24 April

Featuring spellbinding magic, puppetry and original music, Monkey Baa’s awardwinning team has turned the whimsical world of the book into an exciting live experience for audiences aged three to eight and their families.

Audiences will meet Grandma Poss, who loves making magic. She makes wombats blue and kookaburras pink. She makes dingoes smile, and emus shrink. But one day, when danger arrives in the form of a snake, Grandma uses her most magical spell to make Hush invisible. Hush has many wonderful adventures. But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Hush longs to see herself again.

One (small) problem. Grandma Poss can’t find the spell to make Hush visible again. And

then she remembers... this particular magic requires something more, something special, something to do with food... people food!

Join Grandma Poss and Hush as they embark on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again.

“It’s tremendously exciting to bring one of Australia’s most loved iconic stories to the stage… we really wanted to highlight how important it is for young people to find their own voice and visibility and for those who are older to encourage and support their journey because it leads us somewhere new too,” said Director Sandra Eldridge.

“Back in 1978, when I wrote a children’s story as a university assignment, I’d have died of joy if I’d known it would eventually become Possum Magic…now a play! And although I’m as old as Grandma Poss, I’m as excited as a child,” added Author Mem Fox.

WHAT: Possum Magic is a Monkey Baa Theatre Company Production based on the book by Mem Fox and Julie Vivas, which was adapted for the stage by Eva Di Cesare and Sandie Eldridge.

WHEN: 22 to 24 April 2024.

WHERE: Civic Theatre Newcastle.

LIMBO – The Return

Tantalising Tightrope Between Heaven and Hell in Circus Spectacular

WORDS LIANE MORRIS IMAGES SOURCE STRUT & FRET

Every year, sometimes twice a year, Strut & Fret dance into Newcastle with their spectacular Spiegeltent, injecting our city with their signature sexy style, extraordinarily talented performers, and sparkling mayhem. And we can’t get enough of them.

With so many Novocastrian fans, the team is very excited to be bringing their latest show to the city for the first time. According to Scott Maidment, Director and Producer of Strut & Fret, Limbo—The Return is part of a long-running trilogy of shows that audiences in Newcastle have never seen unless they’ve travelled to see it in Sydney or Adelaide.

“It began in 2013 with the original show Limbo,” said Scott.

“We toured it to London, where it stayed next to London’s Eye for six months and then returned again the very next year. Up until the pandemic, it had toured 19 countries.

“The second part of the trilogy was Limbo Unhinged, which we presented at the Sydney Opera House in 2018 and toured to Munich in November of last year. Since then, we reimagined it with half of the original Limbo cast and created Limbo—The Return, which made its international debut at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and then immediately headed directly to Newcastle.

“This show presents a whole new world that people here haven’t seen yet. It’s such a big, live spectacle with extraordinary live music, and we’re just excited to let it loose on Newcastle audiences!”

If you've been left spellbound by previous Strut & Fret performances staged, as always, within The Spiegeltent, such as the acclaimed Blanc de Blanc, the outrageously entertaining The Party, or you were lucky enough to see the award-winning and original Limbo, you're in for a treat featuring an international cast of circus luminaries. Combining a fresh and intoxicating mix of cabaret, circus, acrobatics and ecstatic

heart-pounding live music, Limbo – The Return will transport audiences to a realm where the line between heaven and hell blurs – resulting in an otherworldly party experience like no other!

“Audiences will be whisked away to a sinister netherworld of gut-churning contortion, breath-taking acrobatics, and jaw-dropping stunts,” said Scott. “This is a high-powered extravaganza that leaves you gasping for breath, dancing in the aisles, and even shedding a tear!”

The cast brings together a host of wildly hypnotic, world-renowned circus performers and prolific musicians, many of whom have been playing together for over ten years, led by composer and New York’s Jank maestro Sxip Shirey.

Sydney musician Mick Stuart joins the live ensemble with irreverent electro-acoustic noise and playfully sexy beats. Joining Mick and Sxip is Grant Arthur, a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, producer, and circus performer

known for his versatility from Dixieland trombone and hard-driving bluegrass banjo to funky New Orleans sousaphone and country folk. Sxip’s haunting, ethereal melodies are delivered via an eclectic collection of rare instruments, including Ukrainian jaw harps, siren whistles, megaphones, industrial flute and a glass harmonica. In fact, over 50 different instruments are played on stage.

"AUDIENCES WILL BE WHISKED AWAY TO A SINISTER NETHERWORLD OF GUT-CHURNING CONTORTION, BREATH-TAKING ACROBATICS, AND JAW-DROPPING STUNTS"

“I’ve worked with Sxip for 20 years,” said Scott.

“He lives in New York City, but he’s a creator and composer who travels the world, and his music forms the backbone of this show. At one stage, he even plays a jelly mould!”

Sxip is a sound artist, producer and sonic pioneer who crafts evocative music spanning opera, theatre, film, dance, and circus. His work often features modified and reimagined electroacoustic and electronic instruments, including prepared guitars, bullhorn harmonicas, modified MiniMoog and glass bowls with marbles through electronics. Collaborating closely with his wife and creative partner, Coco Karol, Sxip has orchestrated large-scale immersive choral

events at iconic venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Rockefeller Center, and NYU Abu Dhabi. As the composer for Limbo, Limbo Unhinged and now Limbo – The Return, Sxip showcases the boundless possibilities within the realm of sound.

“Before I die, I want to redefine circus music,” said Sxip.

“Circus music is representational. It represents beauty, sexy, funny - but it isn’t

actually visceral, and I’ve set about changing that. My music is experimental, funky, folky, classical – it’s music that connects people.

“There’s an iconic piece of music—a melody played at the beginning and end of Limbo—an earworm that has become so famous that people sing it back to me. I love pushing boundaries and creating adventurous, strange music, but I also love writing pretty songs. Because I use modified instruments, the sound that’s created can be totally unique. There is no other moment on the planet like it. I love that moment, the secret surprise that is utterly beautiful.”

For those who may have seen the previous Limbo productions, Sxip is quick to assure audiences that the soundtrack has changed with new instrumentation and more electronic music.

“My in-laws bought me a MiniMoog, an analogue synthesiser from the 1970s. It was the first accessible synthesiser and has no pre-sets. It has an amazing sound that we use in clever ways. I want people to walk away from our shows wanting to buy the album.”

Joining Sxip on stage is an amazing posse of world-renowned circus performers from all

over the globe, including Bulgaria’s stunning Maria Monchevae. Previously a ballet and contemporary dancer in Austria at the Viennese Conservatory, she expanded her training to include aerial circus skills. She’s been performing in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Germany.

To keep everyone laughing is the French gravity-defying Chinese pole master, beatboxer and clown Mikael Bres, who has been performing with Cirque Du Soleil and La Clique.

Our very own acrobatic dancing sensation, Hilton Denis, was born in South Africa, raised in New Zealand, and has lived in Sydney for the past ten years. Hilton has performed in concerts for Janet Jackson, Salt-N-Pepa, David Guetta and Flo Rider, and his theatre credits include Show Boat, Oliver! and the Australian tour of West Side Story.

The talented crew would not be complete without the daredevil Spanish acrobat and slackrope virtuoso David Marco, who is also an occasional stuntman and appeared in Game of Thrones, or Ben Loader from London, who studied at The National Centre of Circus Arts, specialising in aerial rope. The fire-breathing vocalist and Sydney local Clara Fable will leave you tickled pink and tantalised with her charismatic stage presence and cheeky

demeanour. Musician turned burlesque performer turned sideshow freak - this showgirl loves attention and isn’t afraid to make sure you know it. Whether singing into the rafters or hanging from them, she’s bound to leave you wanting more.

Clara’s story, from hairdresser to firebreathing singing sensation, is inspirational. “I hated school,” said Clara.

“I left in year ten and became a qualified senior hair stylist just so I could have a ‘proper’ job, but I was always into singing and dancing. I loved being the centre of attention and wanted to be on the stage.

“One day in 2017, I was cutting someone’s hair, and she told me that her daughter was auditioning for Universal Studios. She suggested that I audition. I did, and I got the job,

18

which entailed moving to Japan. It was the first time that I was paid as a full-time performer. Eventually, I moved to the USA because I wanted to be a pop star, and I was doing really well; I had a lot of gigs and was writing songs for other performers. Then COVID hit, and I returned to Australia.

Back in Australia, Clara found that the ‘vibe’ was very different from what she’d been enjoying in the States. It was while she was working in a bar that she had an unexpected opportunity.

“One night, the resident burlesque performer called in sick. She told me to go on in her place using her costumes. So I did! I really loved it and discovered a new direction within the burlesque community. I toured with Dracula’s from the Gold Coast for three years and met Scott in New Zealand. He asked me if I wanted to tour to Germany with Limbo Unhinged

“Everyone banded together to teach me what I needed to know. Fire breathing is common in burlesque, and as a vocalist, my breath control really helps. It’s a very dangerous thing to do and very toxic to your body; you need to be very precise with your technique. Scott and the Strut & Fret team are so collaborative. We’re encouraged to try new things.”

"THE SHOW IS DEVELOPED AROUND WHAT WE ALL BRING TO THE TABLE. IT’S TAUGHT ME THAT YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU SET YOUR MIND TO"

Of course, the other great star of this show is the Spiegeltent itself. No stranger to Civic Park, the one-hundred-year-old Dutch mirror tent with its stained glass, warm timbers, rich velvet and old-world charm reminiscent of European cabaret, draws a team of Novocastrian crew members keen to help set it up every time it lands in Newcastle. Just like a giant Meccano set, there are unbelievably no tools, no screws, no nails, no bolts and no machinery required.

“There is this wonderful sense of romantic achievement that people feel when they are a part of this traditional process,” said Scott. “It’s a beautiful heritage piece that people love to work on. It does take a lot of maintenance, though. There is always something being worked on and repaired.”

According to Scott, one of the highlights of this show is the way in which the tent is used.

“More than any other show that we have done, this is the show that takes place in, above

and around the audience. The musicians play in the aisles, performers fly overhead, and the audience becomes a part of the show more than any other we’ve done. Quite a lot more. It’s amazing. The set is very different. The stage is high. Our performers are like superheroes. And the lighting design by Phil Gladwell from London is spectacular – very, very beautiful.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity to see world-class artists up close and personal. A version of this show has been performed 2,500 times in over 19 countries. It has a real following. People love it, and Newcastle has never seen it! I can’t wait to share it with our audiences here.

“In terms of the meaning behind the show, there’s no one way to view it. Everyone takes something different from it. There’s no real talking in the show. Some people look deeply into the meaning and subtext of the concepts of a limbo between heaven and hell, and others just love the spectacle. There was a reviewer in London who said that on one side of him sat a couple on a date, and on the other sat a 14-year-old girl. The couple thought it was the

sexiest thing they’d ever seen, while the young girl thought it was just like Alice in Wonderland. That pretty much sums it up, I think – it’s an experience that is different for everyone.”

Don’t miss your chance to see this new rendition of Limbo, the show so hot, rumour has it that Madonna came twice! It’s a global sensation, a spell-binding circus spectacle, and it’s playing in Newcastle for the first time ever.

Limbo – The Return plays at the Spiegeltent in Civic Park from 3 April to 5 May. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the show runs at 7.30pm. On Fridays, there is an early show at 6.30pm and a late show at 8.30pm. On Saturdays, there is an early show at 5.30pm and a late show at 7.45pm, and on Sundays, the show is only at 5.30pm.

Running time is 80 minutes and is recommended for ages 15+, although younger children can attend at their parent’s discretion – keep in mind it is rated M. For more information and tickets, visit www.strutnfret.com/spiegeltentnewcastle

It’s Noice, It’s Different, IT’S KATH AND KIM DRAG BINGO!

Kath and Kim Drag Bingo is coming to NEX, Newcastle, on Saturday, 4 May, hosted by Sydney Drag Queen’s foxiest morons: Prada Clutch and Conchita Grande.

Prada is one of Australia's most sought-after live-singing drag queens. She plays Kathleen ‘Kath’ Darleen Day-Knight.

“Playing Kath came naturally to me as I grew up watching the TV show on rainy days at school. I was already using Kath-isms when hosting in drag, as they have become a part of Australian culture,” says Prada.

Conchita is one of Sydney's most popular gender-bending miming drag queens. She plays Kimberly Diane "Kim" Craig (née Day).

“Playing Kim involved a lot of homework. I had to spend a lot of time sitting on the couch at home watching TV and eating lots of unhealthy snacks,” Conchita says.

Prada and Conchita have been touring the East Coast of Australia with their Kath and Kim-

themed drag bingo, playing to packed houses of fanatical Kath and Kim fans—and now they’re en route to Newcastle!

“We started touring the new show just as COVID-19 hit our shores,” says Prada.

“The pandemic changed our plans slightly, but despite this, we’ve been touring the show since 2020, taking the show to the poiples of Australia.”

Each night, one thousand dollars cash plus prizes are given away while punters play absolutely hilarious games of drag bingo—the type of bingo that you would expect to hear on the main stage at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.

In addition to hosting Kath and Kim-themed drag bingo, Prada and Conchita perform a Kath and Kim favourite that you will know and love.

“Performing the chart-topping hit as seen on TV at The Logies, is definitely a hoighlight of the night for our fans,” says Prada.

“Come along dressed as your favourite Kath and Kim character for your chance to win our fancy dress proize. Who knows, you may even go home with our major $1,000 cash proize!”

If you’re looking for a fun night out that will leave you in stitches and maybe even a little more effluent, then this is the show for you, Hornbags! Get your tickets now at www.kathandkimdragbingo.com.

Two Sensational Performances. One Magnificent Evening of Ballet

By popular demand, The Grand Kyiv Ballet of Ukraine will return to Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on 29 and 30 May to present their double bill of Forest Song and Don Quixote. The audience response to their performances in 2023 was amazing, with standing ovations following every performance, and we can’t wait to welcome them back.

The Grand Kyiv Ballet was founded in 2014 by Artistic Director Oleksandr Stoianov, previously a principal dancer with the National Opera of Ukraine for a decade. The Grand Kyiv Ballet has toured extensively worldwide, including the USA, China, Europe, Scandinavia and South America. Performances are regularly attended by Royal families, politicians and many public figures. From the first days of the war, the Grand Kyiv Ballet has performed charity tours in France, Sweden, Norway, South America, Poland and the USA.

Act One – The Ukrainian showpiece… Forest Song

This legendary ballet, which for over 75 years remains not only the pride of Ukraine but also of world choreography and cultural heritage. Forest Song is based on the Ukrainian folk story with music by Ukrainian composer Mikhail Skorulskyi, who created an anthem for wildlife, nature and true love, to which the main characters aspire. Forest Song is a magical love story, full of mysticism alongside the conflict between the human world and nature. It tells a tale of love between a fantastical forest creature, Mavka, and a man, Lukash. The story is of the fearless and brave Mavka, who longs for peace in her world, just as Ukraine longs for

peace in her country today. The ballet is filled with complex duets, fouettés and incredible choreographic pieces.

Acts Two & Three – Don Quixote

This flamboyant and festive Spanish ballet is a much-loved romantic comedy. It tells the story of a courageous but troubled man’s quest for love. Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza set off on an adventure together, hoping to achieve incredible feats and bring glory to his name. Gypsies, bullfighters, lavish costumes, breathtaking dancers, and an inspiring music score ensure that Don Quixote is a not-to-bemissed experience.

Making Memorable Moments at MEGA CREATURES!

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

As the April school holidays approach, families everywhere are seeking fun-filled adventures to create unforgettable memories. In the ancient lands of the Hunter Valley, where volcanos once erupted, there are dinosaurs, giant bugs and mythical creatures waiting for young explorers to discover. Embark on a journey through time at Hunter Valley Gardens with the annual Mega Creatures and Mega Creatures Night Safari from Saturday, 6 April, until Sunday, 5 May. This Jurassic fantastical adventure includes rides, interactive fossil digs, amazing entertainment and giant animatronic animals that will amaze visitors of all ages.

This year promises to be especially exciting with the internationally recognised innovator of physical and visual theatre, puppetry-based creators Erth, providing the entertainment for the first time. With Erth’s just-hatched, adorable Roving Baby Dinosaurs being a highlight, visitors can get up close and personal with a fantastic selection of dinosaurs at Erth’s famous Dinosaur Zoo Show. And if you’re looking for thrills at night during the Night Safari, you might come face to face with Erth’s Roving Exoskeletons - a unique jaw-dropping experience where light and movement combine to bring amazing ancient creatures back to life.

Of course, Mega Creatures would not be what it is without actual mega creatures. All the favourites are returning this year, including T-Rex, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Triceratops and more, but there are also a number of new prehistoric visitors joining the party this year along with the new Dilophosauru, made famous in the movie Jurassic Park. Rumour has it that there may even be a new T-Rex on the hunt…

If you’re visiting during the day, keep your eyes peeled for the hidden dinosaur egg that’s been lost in the gardens. If you can find the egg and return it to Mumma Dinosaur in the Garden’s Entry, you can win a family pass to Snow Time in the Garden later in the year.

As the sun sets at Hunter Valley Gardens, the prehistoric creatures will come alive with lighting. But beware: predators are hunting their prey around the frog ponds and paths! At the Night at the Museum display, budding archaeologists can get their hands dirty discovering mythical fossils.

If you’re looking for more thrills, head to the rides and try the Swing Chair, which flies 11 metres above the ground. The 25-metre-tall Giant Ferris Wheel, with its spectacular panoramic views across the gardens, provides a unique opportunity to see the dinosaurs from above. And when you’re done exploring, check out the wide range of delicious food options. For tickets and more information, visit www.hvg.com.au.

Newcastle Northstars Look to Ice Over Rivals in Fiery Home Opener

As the 2024 Australian Ice Hockey League season gears up, the Newcastle Northstars are primed and ready for their home opener on 6 April against Canberra Brave.

After four seasons with the CBR Brave, Wehebe Darge transferred to the Northstars for the 2023 season.

“I love a hard game and look forward to playing against Canberra. I don't know if there's anyone I don't look forward to playing against, but yeah, there are especially a few teams; Canberra is one of them that I always look forward to,” said Northstars forward Wehebe Darge.

“I think we need a little more composure on the ice, especially on the bench, which will be important for us this year. We've discussed that to death in the locker room and meetings. So that's going to reflect on game days.

“The structure in our game is massive for us this year. I think that our depth is better than most teams in the league. If we can play with structure and succumb to fewer goals, then that formula should see us be very successful.”

Following their preseason games in March, Northstars forward Francis Drolet said, “There are positive things that come out of those games, but there's also a lot of negative. It's good to see it right at the beginning, so we can work on it right away and work on our D zone coverage with a few practices before the season.”

“It’s always good to have that reminder that games will never be perfect right away. Now, we can focus and improve our patience and structure moving forward. If we can play 60 minutes of hockey, we have a greater chance of winning the game,” he added.

This month, the Sydney Ice Dogs will travel up on Sundays, 14 and 28 April, and Adelaide Adrenaline will be in Newcastle on 21 April, so some great home games are on the horizon.

The Gum Ball Music & Arts Festival 2024

We’re pretty fortunate in the Hunter Valley to have some great events, but one of the most treasured has to be The Gum Ball. Now celebrating its 19th chapter, the weekendlong cultural escape has built an enviable reputation across Australia (and the world) for its grassroots evolution into a supreme boutique family-friendly offering tucked away at Dashville, the 100-acre bushland venue and campground at Lower Belford.

Held over the last weekend of the April school holidays and running Thursday, 25 April to Sunday, 28 April 2024, even after so many years, it’s hard to believe that the festival is still considered somewhat of a hidden gem in its local area, yet boasts an enviable reputation as one of the best laid-back festivals in existence across the world.

In 2024, the festival reminds us again as to why, with a well-considered and diverse

lineup full of discovery and intrigue. Featuring 36 artists, from across Australia and overseas, a mix of both emerging and well-established artists who are destined to impress as they all play one-by-one on the intimate bushland amphitheatre.

The natural bushland space of Dashville makes for an incredible home away from home, and The Gum Ball is their flagship event of the year. It’s a comfortable and inclusive festival experience, connecting music lovers from all

walks and ages of life. One big central stage presents a three-day musical journey as artists perform one by one amongst the big tall gum trees that wrap across the idyllic arena space.

Expect an incredible journey of live music alongside live art, comedy, pro skateboarding, markets, workshops, camping and more.

While it is typically a camping festival, there is also an option for single-day tickets.

For more information on The Gum Ball, go to www.thegumball.com.au.

Finding Relief from Dry Eye Disease: My Journey with Dry Eye Solution

Living with Dry Eye Disease (DED) can be a daily struggle, impacting everything from work productivity to leisure activities. As a writer, it made my life very challenging. For years, I battled with red, irritated eyes and blurry vision, searching for a solution that offered long-term relief. That's when I discovered Dry Eye Solution, a clinic dedicated to providing comprehensive care for DED sufferers like me.

From the moment I stepped into Dry Eye Solution, I was impressed by the professionalism and high-tech environment. The clinic's state-of-the-art facility boasted advanced diagnostic technology and a team of experts led by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Toyos. Their holistic approach to DED

management, addressing underlying causes and lifestyle factors, instilled confidence that I was in capable hands.

The journey began with a comprehensive assessment to pinpoint the root cause of my DED symptoms. Tear film analysis, meibomian gland assessment, and ocular surface evaluation were just some of the thorough evaluations conducted to tailor a personalised treatment plan to my specific needs.

One of the key components of my treatment plan was Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive at first, unsure of what to expect. However, the procedure itself was surprisingly comfortable. Under the guidance of the skilled optometrist at

Dry Eye Solution, the IPL treatment targeted inflammation and stimulated the production of healthy tears, all while I relaxed in the clinic's soothing environment.

Constantly relying on eye drops was just a band-aid for my DED symptoms, and it only made my eyes more comfortable as they continued to worsen. But with IPL therapy, I finally found a solution that addressed the underlying issues and provided long-lasting relief.

The results were truly life-changing. After just a few sessions of IPL therapy, I noticed a significant improvement in my DED symptoms. The redness and irritation that once plagued my eyes were greatly reduced, and my vision became clearer than it had been in years.

Dry Eye Solution is the only specialised clinic for Dry Eye Disease. They are committed to patient-centred care and a results-oriented approach. Throughout my treatment journey, I felt heard, understood, and supported by the dedicated team who genuinely cared about my well-being.

If you're struggling with Dry Eye Disease, I highly recommend taking the first step towards relief with Dry Eye Solution. Trust me, it's worth it. Say goodbye to red, irritated eyes and hello to a brighter, more comfortable future.

Newcastle Sets Sail for Australian Yachting Championship Showdown

Newcastle is gearing up to host one of offshore yachting's premier events, the Australian Yachting Championships, from 5 to 7 April. The prestigious regatta, hosted by Newcastle

Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) in conjunction with Australian Sailing, will be part of the fastgrowing SailFest Newcastle, which boasts a heritage dating back to 1845.

A highlight will be the highly competitive TP52 division, featuring 11 entries, including Geoff Boettcher's Secret Men's Business from Adelaide and Marcus Blackmore's newly built Hooligan. Fresh off winning the Pallas Capital Gold Cup Act 1, David Doherty's Matador, along with podium finishers KOA and Quest, will take strong form into the nationals.

At least 11 other entries, like the Middle Harbour Yacht Club trio Nine Dragons,

Soozal, and Sydney 36 Stormaway, will vie for IRC handicap honours. Nine Dragons will face a close battle with Royal Prince Alfred's LCE Old School Racing, both near-identical DK46 sisterships from 2004. Newcastle locals Tom Braidwood's JPK 10.8 Saltwater Wine and Joe De Kock's Farr 40 KD1 will duel for hometown glory.

The racing program includes windwardleeward courses off Newcastle's beaches and a passage race on 6 April with an in-harbor start marked by firing Fort Scratchley's cannon at 11:30am, giving foreshore spectators a frontrow view.

"It's fantastic bringing the sailing community together here. These events are special for the camaraderie developed at the Club afterwards. We deliver great sailing and hospitality, and it's excellent to share that with more sailors this year," said NCYC CEO Paul O'Rourke.

Adding to the festival atmosphere will be the historic Cock of the Harbour race by Port Hunter 16ft Skiffs displaying "a colourful, chaotic beauty." Free kids' try-sailing from 9am-12pm on 6 and 7 April lets families join the fun.

With entries still open across divisions, the stage is set for an exciting Australian Yachting Championships that will showcase Newcastle's stellar sailing conditions and hospitality.

Feast Your Mind on the Literary Smorgasbord of NEWCASTLE WRITERS FESTIVAL

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER

IMAGES SOURCE NEWCASTLE WRITERS FESTIVAL

Once upon a time, Newcastle did not have its own writers' festival. If you were interested in literature and wished to hear authors, publishers, or journalists speak about their works or current affairs affecting the industry, you had no choice but to travel to the Sydney Writers' Festival.

In 2012, award-winning journalist, and mother of three, Rosemarie Milsom, found herself doing just that with a toddler in tow. This experience turned out to be the spark that inspired the Newcastle Writers Festival, which has now been running for 11 years with Rosemarie at the helm, steering the festival from launch through the troubled waters of COVID-19 to this year’s bountiful program.

Rosemarie knew from age 14 that she wanted to be a journalist. She had moved to Newcastle from Sydney when she was 17, attending Merewether High School, where she flourished in English. She studied an arts degree and Dip Ed at the University of Newcastle, before landing her journalism cadetship at the Newcastle Herald.

Rosemarie also had her first child, a son, while at university. She was a young mother

and a journalism cadet at the same time during the 1990s.

“When I first fell pregnant at university, everyone thought that my life was over, but I was deeply determined to prove them all wrong,” said Rosemarie.

“The 1990s was a very different time. Management in workplaces was very maledominated, and there was no flexibility. Family and journalism didn’t go together. No one at work really knew that I was a mother.”

Rosemarie spent five years at the Newcastle Herald before moving back to Sydney, where she first worked as a staff writer for the SunHerald magazine Sunday Life before becoming a section editor at the masthead. She would go on to win multiple awards and continue to work for Fairfax in Sydney and Newcastle until 2015. She has since also worked as a presenter on ABC Radio Newcastle, was selected for the Australia Council’s Arts Leaders Program in 2019, was appointed to the NSW Government’s Literature Board in 2021, and for the past two years has chaired the External Advisory Board for the University of Newcastle’s School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences.

But it was while she was on maternity leave back in 2012 that the family returned to Newcastle and decided to stay. As a regular

host at the Sydney Writers' Festival, Rosemarie then had to travel from Newcastle to attend, and she did so with her son in a pram.

“I began to wonder why we had to travel to Sydney to engage in the world of writing and publishing, and it was this experience that led to the initial idea of creating a writers' festival in Newcastle,” said Rosemarie.

“I set about testing that and spoke to a friend who is a successful businessman. He felt the idea had merit.

“Newcastle was a very different city then, much less culturally aware. I sought strategic partners and had support from the University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, was awarded a $10,000 grant from the City of Newcastle and, in what turned out to be a complete game changer, secured a threeyear seed-funding agreement with Newcastle Now, also known as the Business Improvement Association.”

This initial three-year agreement included critical staff resources and enabled Rosemarie to get the first Newcastle Writers' Festival up and running within nine months. Except for the COVID blip, the festival has gone from strength to strength, injecting a conservative estimate of $5 million into the local economy.

“I’d been a books editor on the Sun-Herald, so I had years of strong industry connections.

As a section editor I curated the stories and tone, the programming and balance of my section. I simply had to apply the same skills to the festival programming. My journalism skills have been a critical asset in my work on the festival.”

The Newcastle Writers Festival was the first Australian literary festival to cancel due to COVID in 2020, and the experience greatly impacted Rosemarie and the small team.

“In terms of risk management, COVID was an unknown and unprecedented factor that illustrated to me how global issues can have a profound regional impact. It taught me that we’re not disconnected from global issues, which now also include climate change, politics, and conflict. The impact continues to resonate. At the Adelaide Writers' Week, just recently, a keynote speaker withdrew due to COVID illness, so the stress of uncertainty never really goes away.”

With a decade behind her, Rosemarie’s focus is on organisational buoyancy as she continues to look to the future and the strategic planning behind the organisation. A Reconciliation Action Plan is being developed, and a new partnership with the University of Newcastle has enabled capacity growth. A new team has been appointed, including Amy Lovat, author and co-founder of bookstore Secret Book Stuff, as program manager.

The 2024 festival is the largest since the COVID disruption and will be held from 5 to 7 April in Newcastle’s Civic precinct, Cessnock, and, for the first time, Port Stephens. It will feature 150 writers across 95 free and ticketed events.

“I think a lot of people misunderstand what a writers' festival is all about”, said Rosemarie.

“It’s an event for people who love books and reading. Whether that be the latest novels, newspapers, audiobooks or podcasts. It’s a

broad church, and what’s unique about writers' festival audiences is that they are people who love to have their ideas challenged, who want to be inspired, and who care about the state of the world. It’s a wonderful antidote to the yelling often found on social media.”

One of the joys of attending the festival is discovering writers that people may not be familiar with. And while there are many award-winners and best-sellers in this year's program, such as Clementine Ford, Chris Hammer, Wendy Harmer, Sally Hepworth, David Marr, and Leigh Sales, Rosemarie has highlighted some hidden gems for our readers.

Kirsten Bradley and her partner Nick Ritner teach the sustainable practice of permaculture at their southern Tasmanian property, Milkwood. Kristen will discuss her book, The Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook, which includes practical skills for growing your own food—even

if you're confined to an inner-city unit. She will also appear in a session about how to create a better world. See Kirsten at Sustainable Living for a Kinder Future and How to Create a Better World, both on 6 April.

James Colley is head writer for Gruen and Question Everything. His debut novel, The Next Big Thing, is a heartwarming, hilarious, quintessentially Australian novel about young love, small towns and underdogs overcoming the odds. James is appearing alongside Nadine J Cohen and Jane Harrison to chat about drawing on dark humour and comedy and the value of laughing in the face of misery at Laugh, or You’ll Cry on 7 April.

Charlotte Ree found herself divorced at the age of 28, living alone in Sydney, and teaching herself to cook for comfort. The book publicist also got writing; the result is Heartbake, a memoir in recipes. Charlotte is appearing at a special ‘supper club’ event, The Love Language of Food, on 6 April, where she'll chat with Bridie Jabour while the audience enjoys a three-course Italian banquet based on recipes from the book.

Jeanne Ryckmans in Life, Interrupted on 7 April joins two other writers to discuss how the life you thought you had can be upended. Literary agent and writer Jeanne Ryckmans shares her personal account of a relationship that becomes destructive and ultimately violent in Trust. What is surprising about her slim and utterly compelling book is how darkly funny it is. For more information about the Newcastle Writers Festival program, visit newcastlewritersfestival.org.au.

It’s always been a reasonably common circumstance… I see patients preparing for retirement who want to ensure their dental health is sorted. It is not only a reasonable action, considering what we know about dental health, but taking the correct actions around this process can not only result in durable, adaptable dentistry, it should also be relatively straightforward.

So what to look out for?

The answer is “keep it simple”. In recent studies of dental health in the elderly, some of the most common problematic dental health issues in the elderly involved complex treatments such as implants. When complex dentistry fails, it is difficult to unwind or stabilise. Often complex surgically. Expensive… and sometimes recovery may lead to even more complex remedies. Hardly a desirable circumstance when you’re elderly.

I know I bang on about this all the time: HAVE A PLAN!

Many patients approaching retirement believe that if they complete an overhaul of their dentistry, they’re done…for life (literally).

Are You DENTALLY prepared for older age? {PART 1}

This may not necessarily be the case. Sometimes, we can identify weaknesses in people’s dental health that can be fortified in the medium term, relatively cost-effectively, with planned “fallback positions” set along the way. These fallback positions can extend the lifespan of a patient’s teeth without becoming unnecessarily aggressive just because retirement is looming.

Don’t underestimate the humble filling. You’ve probably got decades-old fillings in your mouth. I love fillings as a restorative solution. They are generally the most cost-effective

solution; they can be conservative, durable, cosmetically pleasing, and, most importantly, repairable.

We live in an age of throw-away. You can’t have a throwaway mindset in old age… you’ll fall apart too quickly! The ability to “patch” a filling and get you through the next five, seven or even 12 years is what may see you out with teeth.

In part 2 of this series, I’ll discuss the number one factor in dental decay in the elderly and the maintenance of dentistry and dental health. Stay tuned!

Showcasing Hunter Drama Talent GIRLS LIKE THAT

Girls Like That, the forthcoming Very Popular Theatre Company production, will play at the Civic Playhouse from 10 - 14 April. It explores feminism and coming-of-age in a digital world and stars six young women, several of whom are Hunter Drama alumni, students, and staff.

Girls Like That offers a glimpse into the lives and minds of teenage girls in this viciously funny, flinty, and sparkly staging of Evan Placey’s eyeopening, often uncomfortably honest play. When a naked photograph of Scarlett goes viral, she becomes the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons. Battle lines are drawn, girl against girl. But while rumours run wild and everyone forms an opinion, Scarlett stays silent…

Grounded in reality, the play poses an urgent question: How did the generations of women who fought for the vote, rights in the workplace, and control over their own bodies give birth to daughters who were so insecure, judgmental, and unsisterly? Is this what feminism is now?

Daniel Stoddart and Bella Sykes direct a cast of the region's most outstanding young actors, including Anaiya Mahony, Evelyn Parkes, Nyah Lee, Ruby Page, Sienna Randall, and Symphony Riley. For tickets, visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

Introducing Bella. Though she may be quiet and a touch anxious, Bella's gentle nature and loving heart make her a true beauty inside and out. Bella is perfect with children over five who can handle her size. She is house-trained and doesn’t chew or dig. Bella is a dream on the lead. A 20-minute walk a day is all she needs, and if you happen to have another medium—to large, lowenergy dog seeking a companion, Bella would be the perfect match for lazy afternoon snuggles. Bella is waiting to steal your heart!

Trinity is a female domestic short hair with soft fur and a popular calico coat. She is healthy and happy, vaccinated, microchipped and desexed, parasite protected, and completely litter trained. She doesn’t mind being home alone, so if you work or need to go out and do things without her, she’ll wait patiently for you to return. She lives strictly indoors at all times but wouldn’t say no to a safe, enclosed cat run. She is cool with dogs, but she’ll take a minute to really feel secure enough to interact closely, so give her time.

The Queen of Emotional Maturity

On Tour With the Kid

I swear, this year, I really tried. I'm busy with work, and I have so much on my plate in my personal life. I told myself I didn't have the brain space to invest this year. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, you aren't the best version of yourself, and I must admit this was the case when I found myself racing home on a Wednesday night so as not to miss the MAFS dinner party.

For those of you who resisted the urge this year, turn to the next page now because this story isn't for you; it's for those of us who, despite our best efforts, found ourselves eyerolling ourselves into another universe, watching what amounts to a slow-moving car crash. That said, I’m invested like people previously were in

The Days of Our Lives. I love the storyline, but I understand they are just characters.

Invested enough that while a certain person is talking with his shirt unbuttoned practically to his navel, I will send the crying-with-laughter emoji and a photo of a glazed Christmas ham to a friend I know is also watching. I am not, however, invested to the point where I’m sure that everything I see on the screen is a true reflection of this person as a whole. I don’t feel compelled to jump onto their social media feed and write them hate mail. It's a reality show, and if you fall into the latter description, for goodness sake, calm down.

Maybe you have always been in the perfect relationship, and if you have, congratulations.

For those of us who have been single for any length of time, it's rough out there. It's so easy for us to scream at the TV and think, OMG, what is this one doing with this one? They are so toxic.

However, just like in real life, you need to understand that the person in the relationship is not seeing the whole picture. They are not hearing the awful things their partner says to the boys at the gym. They are not seeing the disturbing behaviour that the rest of their world sees, and similar to the people trying to produce the most watched TV show in Australia, the offending partner is engaging in emotional manipulation to keep the other person involved.

So, for those of you screaming at the TV, just remember that for all your time on the moral high ground, you are being emotionally manipulated as well. That's the job of any TV producer. People have not been watching Grey's Anatomy for 20 seasons without storylines designed to engage their emotions.

If you cried at the end of Beaches, if just the thought of the end of the Green Mile makes you burst into tears, if the last episode of MASH, after all these years, still leaves a lump in your throat, then your emotions have been manipulated by a good storyteller. Thus ends the chapter titled Give Tori a Break.

Then, every now and then, on these kinds of programs, there is a shining light. Can we take a moment to talk about Queen Lucinda Light? There are some people that you meet who feel like fully evolved humans. She feels like she has lived all her lives, learnt all her lessons and is just here to be the absolute best version of herself. As much as people say the experts often get it wrong, watching her with Timothy, that’s not true in this case. Anyone watching can see that Lucinda is precisely what he needs.

Some people are not put on your path to be the love of your life; they are there to help you learn a lesson. To help you be softer and more open. People are hard on Timothy but he came onto the show six weeks after the death of his only surviving family member. That’s a lot, and you can understand the need for connection, but he is doing well early in the grieving process to put one foot in front of the other, let alone shine as the best version of himself and show up for someone else’s emotional needs.

Lucinda walks this beautiful line of understanding that, at the moment, that is all he has to give. She recognises the tragedy for him and manages her disappointment with such grace. If we could all be a little bit like Lucinda, the world would be a better place. Hail to the queen of emotional maturity.

LOCAL HEROES RECOGNISED IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

SELFLESS VOLUNTEER REWARDED WITH CITY OF NEWCASTLE'S HIGHEST HONOUR

More than 50 years of service to the community has earned Father Nicolaos Zervas OAM the honour of becoming the 17th Freeman of the City of Newcastle. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes bestowed the award on the 90-year-old late last month during the Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church's annual celebration for Greek Independence Day.

Cr Nelmes said Father Nicolaos’ selfless acts have benefitted multiple generations, from teaching scripture to children to volunteering with senior citizens.

"Father Nicolaos' list of achievements spans decades, with a remarkable breadth of service to the community. He has contributed to initiatives that have advanced not only the local Greek community but also across sectors of

health and wellbeing, peace and justice, sport, and aged care for all Novocastrians," Cr Nelmes said.

Born in Greece in 1934, Nicolaos Zervas came to Australia in 1955. He initially opened a restaurant in Victoria, then one in Sydney, but his real dream was to become a priest. After marrying his beloved wife Christina (Nina) in 1965, he was given an opportunity to move north, where he was ordained by the Newcastle Greek community in 1973.

Twenty years later, he was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his spirit of giving, volunteering with Meals on Wheels at Hamilton, the Northern Settlement Services, the Ethnic Communities Council and Lifeline. Father Nicolaos is a founding member of Greek Day Care and a life member of Hippocrates Aged Care, Fronditha Aged Care Nursing Home and Newcastle Olympic Football Club.

Despite retiring from his role with the Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in July 2021, he still regularly visits people in nursing homes and hospitals.

"It is emotional to be recognised by the City of Newcastle in this way. The support of my wife Nina, my four children and ten grandchildren has enabled me to keep giving back to the community of St Demetrios and the people

of Newcastle and now, even in retirement, it has been my absolute privilege to do so," said Father Nicolaos.

TOP GUN MATT HALL NAMED LAKE MAC AMBASSADOR FOR 2024

Red Bull Air Race World Champion and successful Lake Mac businessman Matt Hall is flying high after taking out the city’s top civic honour. Named Lake Mac Ambassador at a gala evening at Belmont 16s, Matt takes the reins from the 2023 winner, cancer researcher Professor Matt Dun.

“I’m a Lake Macquarie guy through and through, and I’m super-proud of our city. I bring international guests over all the time, and I take them up in the plane or the helicopter and show them the lake, and they just can’t believe it,” said Matt.

The former RAAF Top Gun pilot was unable to attend the ceremony due to Red Bull commitments at the Australian F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, but in a taped acceptance speech, Hall said he grew up in Lake Macquarie “hanging out at Morisset Park on waterskis and paddleboards back in the 80s.”

He later joined the RAAF and served with distinction at home and on deployment overseas. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser commended the 52-year-old for competing in eight Red Bull Air Race championships, culminating in winning the competition’s final

year in 2019 and continuing to run Matt Hall Racing from Lake Macquarie Airport.

“Beyond that, Matt supports many charitable causes and tirelessly champions Lake Macquarie and what our city offers. He has served his country and his home city with distinction, and I know he will continue to fly our flag wherever he can in his new role as Lake Mac Ambassador,” Cr Fraser said.

Teenager Sophie Berude was named Young Citizen of the Year for the second year running for her continued work raising money for John Hunter Children’s Hospital. The leukemia survivor has raised over $40K over the past seven years and was recognised as ‘One to

Watch’ at this year’s NSW Women of the Year Awards.

Hunter Mountain Bike Association took out the Community Group of the Year award for its work making the Awaba Mountain Bike Park one of Australia’s premier mountain-biking destinations, while ABC presenter and author Scott Bevan was named Lake Mac Artist and Creator for 2024.

Bevan’s enchanting book The Lake charts his journey around Lake Mac aboard a kayak and its colourful history and characters. Visit www.lakemac.com.au for a complete list of winners.

April Horoscopes

ASTROLOGER KIM FAIRMINER ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

STAR OF THE MONTH ARIES

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

April opens with Mercury retrograde in your sign, suggesting that keeping your lips sealed would be beneficial. Of course, you're a speedy character in both word and deed, which presents a challenge. Thankfully, Venus arrives to lend you a diplomatic hand; it's surprising what you can get away with when you're looking cute. Don't push your luck too far, though, especially around the solar eclipse – also in your sign – on the 9th. It's a busy time to be an Aries! Watch for lucrative financial opportunities in late April and be ready to sign the paperwork when Mercury moves forward.

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY

The solar eclipse is the perfect opportunity to forgive yourself for past mistakes and unleash a new bravado unencumbered by silly hypothetical fears. Use Mercury retrograde to argue against the voice of your inner negative Ned or Nelly. Play around with a new subconscious character—the one waving pompoms and shamelessly cheering you on!

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Your friendships keep you on your toes this month. You are in major social demand, and even with your talent for multitasking, you could get a little confused and end up double-booking yourself or spilling the word salad lingering limp at the back of the fridge. Mercury retrograde is here again to test your mind, tangle your tongue, and interfere with your electronics.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

Major career activity is happening for you this month, Cancer, so be a little gentle with yourself. You are more ambitious than most people realise, and though the changes underway look exciting, they will trigger your fears and insecurities. Landing a new job, a big client, or being promoted comes with extra responsibilities that seem to have you secondguessing. You absolutely are good enough!

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

Your mind is far, far away, and your feet long to follow. You strive to get out of your comfort zone. Whether that’s sharing the knowledge you’ve accumulated through your life adventures or jet-setting to a foreign shore, you are more than ready to escape your everyday routine. Take care with bookings and paperwork, though, as Mercury retrograde could have you hopping on the wrong flight!

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

You bravely step into the shadows this April, ready to uncover secrets and bring truth to light. It may sound dramatic, but looking at your loan balances and assessing your retirement plan requires courage. Roll up your sleeves and do some sums, knowing that Venus will soon bring harmony to the necessary chaos of Mercury retrograde in this foreboding sector of your chart.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

With your boss-babe planet, Venus, moving through your partnership sector for most of the month, your focus is firmly on bringing harmony to your relationships and collaboration. Sounds perfect, no? Well, it is if you don’t mind Mercury retrograde and a solar eclipse interfering with your romantic fantasies. Towards the end of the month, the mood shifts from interpersonal to material.

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

As April begins, you are under the pump and feeling the heat in terms of stress, worry, and responsibilities. Hopefully, you aren’t unwell –but if your body has hit its limit, pay attention and prioritise your health and wellbeing. Participating regularly in enjoyable activities is essential. There’s a major development with a key partner as the Moon becomes full in your sign.

SAGITTARIUS

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

The desire for more spontaneous romance and pleasure counterintuitively requires negotiation and planning – but once you are on your marks and ready to go, you’ll be unstoppable. The harder you work and the deeper you commit to

an innovative new idea, the more likely you are to discover the rich seam of gold you seek. Let novelty lead the way.

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

There are deep rumblings at the foundational levels of your life. Structural changes are underway in your mind, and so is how you connect to your local community. Ensure your media consumption, your commute, and your peer relationships are all humming. Your home and family life are getting a reset; have faith that any disruptions or misunderstandings will be smoothed over by month’s end.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

New ways of thinking are underway as you rediscover the magic right under your nose. Going for a walk around your local area is an excellent way to refamiliarise yourself with what you think you already know. Be open to surprises, though. The less you say, the more you will intuitively understand. You’ll be ready to share your sparky new ideas towards the end of the month.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

It’s nose to the grindstone in early April as you work hard to set yourself up for long-term success and achievement. Making money along the way is also an important part of this story. Retrograde Mercury and the solar eclipse help you rearrange the way you spend and earn with the optional help of a financial professional. Keep your receipts.

Windsor's 80 Years of Blind Innovation Future Proofing Newcastle

For almost 80 years, Newcastle's Windsor Blinds, Awnings and Shutters has been a frontrunner in design and technology for window coverings. Owner Craig Young has been immersed in the industry since childhood, learning from his innovative father, B.J Young (Bill), about craftsmanship, customer service, and running a business.

The family behind Windsor has always been at the forefront. After returning from WWII in 1946, Bill built the company, patriotically naming it after Windsor Castle. He quickly made his mark, patenting the Steel Curved Venetian Blind Slat design in 1967 and being the first to use Terylene cables and tapes, propelling Windsor as a leader in blind manufacturing innovation.

Though Bill passed away in 2013, Craig and his wife Zdenka have carried on the legacy since 2011, relocating the premises and expanding the product range.

"Craig's extensive experience allows us to craft bespoke window covering solutions unlike many competitors," said Zdenka.

"As our climate changes, more people want energy-efficient, safe options to future-proof their homes. We work directly with builders for new constructions and individual clients needing custom solutions like automated awnings and shutters."

Windsor offers an extensive high-quality range, including the everpopular plantation shutters in various materials, the dual Duo Roller Blinds for day/night use, Ziptrak outdoor blinds, and the unique Veri Shades, which combine curtain style with blind versatility.

With the latest tech options and a longstanding reputation, Windsor anticipates a busy summer.

"We make sure to deliver the best," Zdenka affirmed.

"Our customers, some for generations, expect it from Windsor's history of innovation."

The team provides free consultations and custom solutions, ensuring Windsor remains at the vanguard of window coverings in Newcastle. Visit www.windsorblinds.com.au
