FROM THE

EDITORS...

Welcome back to intouch and another year full of great local content representative of everyone living and working in our great region. We've been locally owned and produced since our launch in 2015 and are proud to be part of the community we serve month after month. It's onwards and upwards in 2024 for Newcastle and Lake Macquarie's favourite and most widely distributed free local lifestyle magazine – and we welcome you along for the journey! We will shortly kick off that journey with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the best musical theatre performers in Australia sharing one stage and performing some of the greatest hits of the best-loved musicals of the twentieth century. Coming to the Civic Theatre in March, Superstars is a musical celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice starring Marina Prior, Silvie Paladino, Joshua Robson and Chloé Zuel. If you love musical theatre, then the playlist will put your head in a spin as the Superstars perform all your favourites. Read more on page 16. Every year in Australia, over 250,000 companion animals are killed. In NSW alone, the figure is over 60,000, and the numbers continue to increase. Most of these animals are healthy and re-homeable, and since its establishment in 2008, Dog Rescue Newcastle has saved 10,000 dogs and 800 cats. This month, we caught up with two of the organisation's busiest volunteers to discover what becoming a foster carer is all about and how we can all help an excellent cause. Read more on page 34. It's official! Battlesticks, Newcastle’s favourite bar, is back and better than ever! This sophisticated bar and European tapasstyle dining experience is housed in a spectacular architecturally designed building that is also home to the iconic Scratchleys restaurant, and this month, we caught up with owner Neil Slater to find out what’s new and why a night out at Battlesticks is such great value. As the year ramps up and everyone recovers from Christmas, a host of new shows and festivals is headed our way. Newcastle Fringe Festival is back for another year (tickets are already on sale), and the Newcastle Writers Festival will follow. Both are favourites on the annual calendar, and we can’t wait to bring you all the latest news in the coming months. Enjoy!

ONE FOR THE DIARY

SCHOOL OF ROCK

WORDS: LIANE MORRIS Hunter Drama is pumped to be getting its ‘rock on’ and bringing the smash hit musical School of Rock to the Civic Theatre this July. Based on the Paramount movie by Mike White and starring everyone’s favourite movie star, Jack Black, the production features new music by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and promises to be an

audience favourite for young and old alike. Directed by Lauren Harvey, part of the creative team for Billy Elliot the Musical and Aspire, with musical direction by ARIA nominee Dan Wilson, the show is based on the book by Julian Fellowes with lyrics by Glenn Slater. The iconic Lloyd Webber score has 14 new songs created for the West End and Broadway productions, as well as the original songs from

the movie, some of which are becoming rocksolid standards guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet. The cast comprises a young ensemble of Hunter Drama emerging stars led by Hunter Drama Artistic Director, professional actor and all-round talent James Chapman, in the hilarious role of Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out? School Of Rock, with its sensational live kids’ rock band, is a loving testimony to the transforming power of music. “Get ready to rock your socks off. School of Rock is a celebration of passion, talent, and the universal language of music,” said Director Lauren Harvey. “Our crew has poured their hearts and souls into this show, and our cast will deliver powerhouse performances that will leave audiences cheering for more.” Hunter Drama’s production of School of Rock will take over Civic Theatre Newcastle from 18 to 20 July. Tickets are on sale now. Visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au for more info.

The Ultimate Cast

SUPERSTARS PREMIERES IN NEWCASTLE WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES PETER STOOP Superstars is a musical celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice in concert and represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the best musical theatre performers in Australia sharing a stage, performing some of the greatest hits of the best-loved musicals of the twentieth century. Coming to the Civic Theatre in March, it promises to be a magical musical journey that will appeal to a very wide audience with songs that evoke collective memories and touch the hearts of anyone who’s listening. The ‘superstars’ are comprised of Australia’s leading lady of musical theatre, Marina Prior, who headlines the ultimate cast, including Silvie Paladino, of Les Miserables, Mamma Mia, Cats and Chess fame, Joshua Robson, fresh from his triumphant portrayal of the title role in Handa Opera’s The Phantom of the Opera on Sydney Harbour, and Australia’s very own Catherine of Aragon and Eliza Hamilton, Chloé Zuel. This extraordinary cast will perform hits from the world’s best-loved musicals, including Jesus 16

Christ Superstar, Evita, Starlight Express, Aida, Chess, Mamma Mia, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Sunset Boulevard, The Phantom of the Opera and many more! Musical Direction is by ARIA nominee and Starstruck Musical Director since 2008, Dan Wilson and the production will also feature local powerhouses Katie Blaxland, Tayla Choice, Thomas James, Jon Murphy, Layla Schillert, Amy Vee, Marty Worrall and Danny Folpp, backed by a 100-voice mass choir and the Hunter Pops Orchestra, conducted by Dan. With choreographic work from the highly acclaimed National College of Dance and pieces specially devised for this performance under the guidance of choreographer Lauren Harvey, this show promises to be spectacular in every sense of the word. This rare confluence of amazing talent is the brainchild of The Very Popular Theatre Company Producer and Artistic Director, Daniel Stoddart and Musical Director Dan Wilson. “It started as a conversation following our production of Chess in 2021,” said Daniel Stoddart. “Dan and I talked about how much we loved

the format with a big orchestra and a mass choir. We had great feedback from audiences just loving Silvie Paladino, and we thought we just had to have her back. Six months later, we could see a gap in the production schedule and wondered if it would be possible to do a full concert with a bunch of musical stars.

"WHO CAN’T HELP BUT BE SWEPT UP BY THE MUSIC OF ALADDIN, LION KING OR BEAUTY AND THE BEAST? THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE." We never thought Marina would be available, but Silvie and Marina are great friends, and when Silvie was keen, the stars aligned; we got lucky, and Marina was able to fit the production into her busy performance schedule. “This is the biggest concert of musical

Silvie Paladino

theatre that Newcastle has ever seen by far and likely never to be repeated. When on earth will you get these top four performers together with this catalogue of songs again? It’s all the bangers!” Musical Director Dan Wilson agrees. “We’ve created the whole show around Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The scope of music between the two of them is an amazing collection. Both Lloyd Webber and Rice have the coveted claim to fame of being EGOTs, winners of the world’s four most prestigious music-related awards – the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards. Who can’t help but be swept up by the music of Aladdin, Lion King or Beauty and the Beast? There’s something for everyone. “We started quietly putting this together in December 2022. It’s been an 18-month process. You have to book Marina Prior at least 12 months ahead, but we planted the seed two years ago. It was a pinch-me moment when all our first choices of artists jumped on it. Then

began the long process of negotiating the rights for the songs.” There is no narrative thread to the concert. It’s a concert of top hits with some talking between songs as the performers share their personal connection to the music. The performers are front and centre, including the orchestra and choir, who are all on stage. Seeing the music being performed is part of the experience. Marina Prior is regarded as Australia’s leading lady of musical theatre and, in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours, was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. Marina is arguably best known for her lead role as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, which she played for over three years. Silvie Paladino has established herself as one of Australia’s most versatile and talented entertainers. Her first theatrical role was Eponine in the Australasian tour of Les Misérables. She followed that with roles in Cats, Mamma Mia, Miss Saigon, Fun Home, Cinderella

and the lead role of Florence Vassy in Chess The Musical, a performance she recreated for the sold-out season at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle in 2021. Chloé Zuel is a renowned musical theatre performer, most notably starring as Eliza Hamilton in the original Australian cast of Hamilton the Musical. Chloé was previously Catherine of Aragon in Six the Musical, Anita in West Side Story and Sarah in Ragtime for The Production Company. Joshua Robson recently starred in the titular role in The Phantom of the Opera with Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, for which he was nominated for Best Lead Performance in a Musical at the Sydney Theatre Awards. “Sir Andrew and Tim Rice are both aware of the show,” said Daniel. “We’ve got our fingers crossed for a video message. “The production will be visually dynamic. paid are the choir members. There is a sliding scale of remuneration. This is the first time that The Very Popular Theatre Company has been able to do this. It’s an important development for us. One of the significant advantages of combining local talent with worldclass performers is the development potential for Newcastle artists. The ‘superstars’ won’t arrive in Newcastle until a week before the show. As Musical Director, Dan Wilson will have to travel the country to where each artist is located for individual rehearsals. “Our local singers will cover for the stars during the month of rehearsals in the leadup and get an opportunity to sing this amazing material and rehearse with a full orchestra and a mass choir,” said Dan. “For them, it’s like Christmas morning to get a run with the orchestra and choir.” Daniel agrees, saying, “What’s truly wonderful about it is that there is a recognition of equal respect and talent. It operates at a collegial level. Exposing our young and emerging talent to the experience of professional world-class performance standards is invaluable for them. It’s inspirational and truly develops their careers.”

"IT’S A PRIVILEGE TO SING THESE SONGS, AND IT’S FABULOUS WITH AN ORCHESTRA." different moods, stories and characters. The audience will find it easy to invest in the characters, and with the use of technology and animation, they’ll be able to immerse themselves in 30 different journeys. “Our director is Erin James, who did Mamma Mia and Chess. She also worked with Julie Andrews on the revival of My Fair Lady at the Sydney Opera House, so we’re all in good hands. There are 36 songs representing 17 different shows, some never before seen in Australia. One may even be a world premiere.” An integral component of the production is the blending of local talent with world-class performers and creatives and the exceptionally 18

high level of professionalism that is demanded of everyone. This is something that Daniel Stoddart has been passionate about since he was a student himself. “We work hard at training young people to professional standards, fostering an ecosystem of training, bringing in professional directors and artists to elevate skills and profiles. Newcastle is the seventh biggest city in Australia. Cities smaller than us have professional theatre companies, but we don’t. There’s a sense that you are only respected as a creative artist if you leave and then return to our city. We want to change that. “In Superstars, the only people not getting

Superstar Marina Prior agrees. “The way Daniel involves the professionals with the amateurs is a fantastic thing to do,” said Marina. “Sometimes I do masterclasses with students, but nothing on the scale of this. It’s a joy to come back to Newcastle. I’ll have a week and a half to enjoy the town and the beautiful beaches. I don’t often get a chance to enjoy the place we visit when performing. “I have friends that have worked with Daniel and said how wonderful it was. I’ve also worked with Dan Wilson before, and I know that he has put together a fabulous orchestra. Dan has done arrangements for me in the past, so I trust him and know how good his work is.

Chloé Zuel

“Newcastle is becoming another centre – a seeding ground. The more work we create, the more a community thrives. A healthy arts scene is indicative of a thriving community. I see it all the time when I’m touring. It’s wonderful that this is being created in Newcastle, and it’s a massive endeavour. It doesn’t happen often outside of a capital city, and I love that. “The Very Popular Theatre Company is a creatively resourced, fantastic theatrical organisation that’s dreaming big - professional, meticulous. It’s not a lower-scale endeavour, and I can’t wait to do it. “I love the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. I’ll be singing songs from shows I love and songs from shows I haven’t done. It’s a privilege to sing these songs, and it’s fabulous with an orchestra. I’m lucky. I love the community, and I like mentoring those who are dreaming big and starting out. Many of these young performers will end up working on big shows, and I think it’s wonderful to be a part of it.” The fact that concerts like this don’t happen outside capital cities is important. There is a bigger dream underlying the work of The Very Popular Theatre Company. “It’s all part of our journey to develop the local industry,” said Daniel. “We produce highlevel, top-quality productions that can stand their own on any world stage. We set the bar very high. The challenge is in convincing the

Joshua Robson

public. Every single state in Australia was represented in our ticket sales for Billy Elliot and Chess. The big names that star in some of our productions help draw attention to what we’re producing here and attract people to the city.” Dan Wilson would like to see the show do so well that touring it around the country would be a possibility. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Having Marina performing in a Newcastle production is simply amazing. It may never happen again. Josh and Chloe are both on the precipice of true stardom, and people in Newcastle just love Silvie. Getting all four of these artists is quite a thing. Our dream is to tour it around Australia. The model would be that each location would provide the local artists whilst the creatives and the four stars would tour. The success in Newcastle will determine the possibility of touring. So much has to fall into place, though, with venues and artists. But how wonderful would it be for

something from Newcastle, produced here where there is so much talent, to go on tour around the country? We don’t want our local talent to feel like they have to leave to get work. We need to give them a reason to stay and perform. Or at least visit. It’s wonderful to create work in our city.” As Daniel puts it, “I couldn't be more thrilled to be bringing this dream cast together for the most spectacular musical concert event our beautiful city has ever seen. Newcastle deserves the very best that Australia has to offer, and Superstars delivers just that. Get ready for an unforgettable night of music and magic which showcases the next level of locally produced entertainment!" Superstars will take over the Civic Theatre for four performances only, from 8 to 10 March, and tickets are selling fast from www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au or by phoning 02 4929 1977. 19

Battlesticks WORDS: LIANE MORRIS IMAGES: SUPPLIED BY BATTLESTICKS

Battlesticks, Newcastle’s favourite bar, is back and better than ever before! This sophisticated bar and European tapas-style dining experience is housed in a spectacular architecturally designed building that is also home to the iconic Scratchleys restaurant. Battlesticks was forced to close throughout the pandemic to enable the expansion of the space for Scratchleys to accommodate the physical distancing rules that were in place at the time. The bar has only recently been reopened in November late last year. “I want to remind people that we’re open again,” said Neil Slater, owner. “It’s such a special space, and we invite everyone to come and take a look. You can’t see inside the bar from outside on the wharf, and sometimes I think that makes people a bit nervous about coming in. We may be luxurious and sophisticated, but our prices aren’t. We’re no more expensive than a good pub. Our place is different; it’s like a breath of fresh air, and everyone is welcome.” 22

Neil sees this latest incarnation of the Scratchleys / Battlesticks harbourside building as the culmination of his 34 years on the site. “I’m proud of what we’ve built here,” said Neil. “It’s a legacy building that’s simply gorgeous. When we designed Battlesticks, we wanted it to have a large, ambient, public space feel that has an incredible degree of interaction with the harbour. We’ve certainly achieved that.” Battlesticks is built over the lapping waters of the working harbour along Newcastle foreshore. Its design is reminiscent of sails with 12-metre-high cathedral ceilings and glass, providing vision to both the water and the sky above with 180-degree views. Its sumptuous cream and gold interior evokes a luxury yachting experience enhanced by the cool breezes wafting through the louvred windows. “We designed a space that feels sophisticated, and that supports the way in which I like to entertain. It’s very European. A

place to meet friends, enjoy a cocktail or a drink from our extensive wine and beverage list, and nibble on a shared plate or two. Maybe you settle in for the night, or you’re off to dinner at Scratchleys or out to an event, the movies or the theatre. Lots of people pop back in for a nightcap before heading home. There’s even a gold-tiled selfie wall to capture the memories!” Battlesticks shares its friendly and professional staff with Scratchleys, so the customer service and menu are reliable a and of very high quality. All dishes are designed to be shared, with many featuring the seafood that Scratchleys is known for. There are both European and Asian flavours at play here, with some of the favourites being Natural Oyster Nam Jim with wasabi & lime, Arancini of the day or the Steamed Bao Bun Trio with crispy spicy chicken, seared tuna or crumbed eggplant. Even the Shoestring Fries come with truffle oil, shaved parmesan and parsley! “There’s something for every taste on the menu, and the same goes for the drinks. One of the things I love the most about what we’ve done here at Battlesticks is our extensive selection of champagne, beers and wines by the glass or the bottle, our sensational cocktail list and our marvellous choice of spirits. I truly believe that we’ve got one of the best beverage lists of any bar in Newcastle. And if you can’t find a cocktail that you like on our list, our very talented bar staff are only too happy to concoct one with you!” Battlesticks is open Friday to Sunday from noon until late and is open to over 18s only. Later in February, Neil hopes to have live entertainment playing on Sunday afternoons for the ultimate in that chilled-out ‘end of the weekend’ vibe. There are also function packages available and a dance floor that holds up to 80 people. To book a table, call 02 4929 6989 or go online at www.battlesticks.com.au.

THE WHARF REVUE

Pride in Prejudice

It’s that time! Settle back while The Wharf Revue team reveals its latest policy settings and dips into its Reserve Bank of gags to address the Cost of Laughing crisis when they return to Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on Friday and Saturday, 5 and 6 April. Created and written by Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe, and Phillip Scott, The Wharf Revue is Australia's best-loved musical

comedy show, and with over twenty-three years of experience in the political satire space, they’re Australia’s most trusted revue-based practitioners. In 2024 they continue the tradition with this year’s hilarious offering: Pride in Prejudice. Satirical content is up by 7%, and the average laughter quotient is indexed at 8.3% over the forward estimates, but the Wharf

Revue defies the cost-of-living pressure by keeping the ticket price at the same level as last year! Take that, Michele Bullock! “We consult with Costa on the future of the planet, examine our “mutually respectful” relationship with America in the South Pacific, hear the conflicting viewpoints of political puppets on Avenue Q&A, and reveal the nightmare that is the British Royal Family,” says creator Jonathan Biggins. “We dive into the world of Russian opera, so sadly lacking on our stages, with the tragic story of a flawed hero in Mussorgsky’s unacclaimed masterpiece ‘Raise-Putin’.” With no jokes written by ChatGPT and no sketches outsourced to PWC, Pride in Prejudice is completely gluten-free, suitable for the lactose intolerant and no animals were harmed during the production process. See the new show Pride in Prejudice at the Civic Theatre Newcastle on Friday, 5 April 2024, at 7.30pm or Saturday, 6 April 2024, at 2pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are online at www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au. **Disclaimer: Reputations may be questioned, political careers damaged, and some sacred cows slaughtered. The Spiritual Heart of the Red Centre PALYA ULURU WORDS & IMAGES: DI VON ESSEN With an overseas visitor in tow and a bucket list item (for two of us at least) begging to be ticked off – the fabulously-priced “ULUṞU ON SALE NOW” offer was just too tempting to pass up. Only after I had booked the flights did I realise why it was so cheap and how hot it might be ten days before Christmas. But hey – I'm Australian, for heaven's sake – and my travel partners are seasoned Africans – so we’ve got this, right? Home to the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa and Watarrka National Parks, this desert region is blessed with World-heritage-listed natural wonders, abundant wildlife, loads of red dirt and rugged beauty. Uluṟu (previously known as Ayers Rock) is considered the spiritual heart and the jewel in the region's crown. Standing 348 metres above the desert floor, Uluṟu is the largest monolith in the world and possibly our most iconic landmark. But it hasn’t always been known as Uluṟu; most people will probably still know this stunning natural phenomenon as Ayers Rock – named by explorer Ernest Giles after the then South Australian Premier Sir Henry Ayers in 1872. So, why the name change? Of course, the rock’s history dates back thousands and thousands of years and has been part of our indigenous culture (the Aṉangu people) since the beginning of time, with the caves and

crevices of the magnificent monolith containing many sacred areas and ancient rock paintings. In 1985, the Australian government returned ownership of Uluṟu to the Aṉangu people to acknowledge their place as the original custodians of the land, but it took a full ten years before the name changed to Uluṟu, which was made official at the time the national park’s name was changed from Ayers Rock-Mount Olga National Park to Uluṟu -Kata Tjuṯa National Park. A direct flight from Sydney (sorry folks – no non-stop flights from Newcastle) gets you there in only three and a half hours. And here is my first tip. If you can nab yourself a window seat, it’s well worth it (provided it’s a clear day), as the views from above are truly stunning. Our flight path took us past the Blue Mountains, the deserts of western NSW and the extensive Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) Salt Lake – which I can confirm was spectacularly empty, the brilliance of the whiter-than-white salt pan against the surrounding red earth made for some naturally abstract photos. A window seat also means you get to see Uluṟu (and the Olgas) from above before embarking on your journey below, giving you a sense of the enormity of both structures and providing an instant understanding of the term ‘red centre’. The airport is a short 15-minute drive to Ayers Rock Resort – a complex that is home to

all of the accommodations in the area – from camping facilities to the luxurious Sails in the Desert and everything in between depending upon your taste – and, of course, budget. A luxury coach will pick you up from the airport and transport you to the resort, but if you want to do your own exploring, you can also hire a car from the airport. Our hotel of choice is Desert Gardens Hotel, boasting nicely appointed rooms with views of Uluṟu, a couple of restaurants and, most importantly, excellent air-conditioning – which came in handy on our 45-degree days! The coach that dropped us there also circles the resort every 40 minutes, dropping and picking up guests along the way and including a stop at the nearby Camel Farm – which is definitely worth a look. Another feature of the resort is the viewing area in the centre of the resort, accessible from each of the accommodations, which provides guests with a lovely view of Uluṟu at all times of the day. A couple of tips at this point. Firstly – flies. We went fully armed with netting, forewarned by Google that Summer was the worst time of the year for flies. We heeded the warning and went fully prepared not to let such pesky distractions ruin our trip. I don’t know if we were just lucky – but there was no need for netting as the flies were few and far between. In hindsight, I would have waited to see what it was like ▶ 31

and then purchased a net (available throughout the resort for about $10) if needed. Second tip – book your experiences before you go. We went at a relatively quiet time of year, yet many of the experiences were fully booked. Also, be aware that some of the free activities (like the Bush Food experience) are held outdoors, and if the temperature goes above 35 degrees, they are cancelled – so consider this when you are planning when to take your trip, as summer temperatures rarely dip below this mark. We chose two experiences that we felt were good value. The Field of Lights (Star Pass) experience is held just after sunset and lasts for about 2.5 hours. Starting with coach transport to a dune top, where we enjoyed a selection of delicious outback canapes with drinks while the skies darkened over the rock, our guide provided numerous interesting facts about the history and building of the installation to set the mood. Gradually, 50,000 solar-powered glass spheres came to life, and we were permitted to walk one of two paths through the installation. It is a beautiful experience but could have been improved if fewer (and quieter) people were there. The following morning, we set off before sunrise (4.30am to be exact!) on the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa tour. Time for another tip – purchasing a tour does not include entry to the national park, and the minimum entry period is a three-day pass at $35pp. The coach driver allowed those without a pass to stop at the gate and buy one, but honestly, they should have offered it as part of the tour. That said – it was gorgeous to watch the changing colours of Uluṟu as the sun rose. We arrived at the perfect time and had more than enough time to take a bucket-load of photos. Then, off to Kata Tjuṯa (Olgas) for a talk and hike to Waḻpa Gorge. The walk is further than we thought it would be and a little hard going/rocky in parts – but the view on arrival – back through the gorge and across the desert was worth it. Other tips – don’t wear white shoes (or clothes) in the desert as the red dirt will stain both, and make sure you budget on the high side for meals. We had one self-BBQ at the Outback Hotel, and the rest of the time, we ate at the hotel restaurant or the café in Town Square. No matter where we dined, it was expensive (even when you cooked it yourself!). Understandably, this is because of the high costs involved with transporting perishable ingredients into the middle of Australia. If Uluṟu isn’t on your bucket list – why not? As far as we were concerned, it ticked all the boxes for an exceptional short break (even in summer)! 32

Unparalleled Passion and Commitment

DOG RESCUE NEWCASTLE WORDS LIANE MORRIS Every year in Australia, over 250,000 companion animals are killed. In NSW alone, the figure is over 60,000, and the numbers continue to increase. Most of these animals are healthy and re-homeable. Dog Rescue Newcastle has saved 10,000 dogs and 800 cats since it was established by Sue Barker in 2008. After 20 years of running the RSPCA in Port Macquarie, Sue Barker moved into the Newcastle area. She grew up in the country with a family who shared a passion for animals and a need to make a difference. Sue quickly noticed the euthanasia rates of the local pounds in her new area and, once again, felt the need to do something about it. She set up Dog Rescue Newcastle as a registered not-for-profit. “Many of the dogs in these pounds have nothing wrong with them,” said Sue. "They are perfectly healthy, normal family pets who may have become lost and remain unclaimed or are surrendered by owners who can no longer care for them.” Dog Rescue Newcastle receives no government funding. Everything is paid for through donations, fundraising, fees and sponsorship. The work and coordination of the organisation are the result of the goodwill, blood, sweat and tears of its committed, loyal and passionate volunteers, over 300 of them – each of whom is a hero in their own right. Volunteers include foster carers, a marketing and fundraising team, drivers and people 34

working in administration and IT. The team rescues dogs from the Hunter, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast areas. They also get numerous requests each day from people wanting to surrender their dog or cat for various reasons, and in most cases, these animals enter into a foster care family before finding their forever home – all through the hard work of the Dog Rescue Newcastle volunteers. Vicky Davies is one such volunteer. Vicky has been a volunteer with Dog Rescue Newcastle for over 11 years and has been one of the puppy coordinators for the past two of those years. “I just love dogs, and we’ve always had them,” said Vicky. “I live on 15 acres out near Kurri with no neighbours. A friend told me about Dog Rescue Newcastle, and I felt selfish. I’ve got so much room, and I’m at home. It seemed wrong not to have a go at helping somehow. Everything was provided for me, and it’s such a supportive group. It just snowballed from there. Since then, Vicky has had 60 foster dogs in 11 years. Some end up staying with her, and others find their way to their new forever homes. She currently has ten dogs on her property. “The ones that end up staying are often dogs with challenging behaviours or health issues, dogs who’ve suffered trauma – when we keep a dog, we call it a ‘foster fail’ because we can’t bear to let them go! “It’s a foster carer’s job to help get their foster dog into the best possible shape for their new home. When we get very adoptable

dogs, it’s not hard to move them on because you want them to flourish and have their best life. One of my favourite things is that we get updates – people often stay in contact and send us photos. There’s nothing better than seeing a dog loving his new family and enjoying their best life. “When I first started, my youngest child was ten years old, and he took it really hard with one puppy we had. We talked about the fact that every dog is a 15-year commitment. I asked him if he could commit for that long, but of course, with school and studies and entering the workforce, he knew he couldn’t. After that, he got used to seeing new dogs about the place and loves it as much as we do. “I was a nurse, and when it was time to retire, I knew I couldn’t have more than 10 or 11 dogs at a time, but I could be an emergency carer for litters of puppies. Many of our puppies come from people who have not had their dogs desexed and end up with an accidental litter. I became an emergency carer for puppies and then took on the role of puppy coordinator.” Sharing this role of puppy coordinator with Vicky is another volunteer, Beth Abrahams, who runs her own transport business from her acreage in Awaba. “I saw Dog Rescue Newcastle on social media,” said Beth. “I knew that I had room to be a foster carer, and the fact that I worked from home made it even easier. I started about five and a half years ago. We still have our first foster dog. We

currently have five dogs, all rescues, and two of them have special needs. “A lot of people don’t realise that some of our dogs start out with us badly malnourished, with worms, flea-ridden, and so afraid. Nursing them back to health is so rewarding, and seeing them happy again in their new, forever family home makes everything worth it. The two hourly bottle feeds and the late-night rescue outings when puppies have been dumped. My husband never complains; he’s a big softie. And the kids get involved by helping me match our applications with our dogs. “It’s important to remember that not all our dogs have issues. Many have become homeless due to no fault of their own. The cost-of-living crisis, the rental crisis, break ups, people moving overseas or into aged care facilities – people don’t know what to do. I would encourage anyone in these situations to contact us. Where possible, we will even help you keep your dog with donations of food and sometimes even vet care. Dog Rescue Newcastle are currently raising funds to build a shelter so that they can have the space to take in more dogs and cats, run better assessments and provide training. Currently, they have to refuse some surrenders due to a lack of room.

The most important message that Dog Rescue wish to convey to everyone is to ensure that your animal is desexed. The organisation's primary aim is to reduce the number of animals going into the pound system and being euthanised. Volunteers are always needed. If you wish to be a foster carer, there is a vetting system and a yard check to ensure your home is a safe environment, but lots of support is

"IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING GETTING A DOG OR A NEW PET, ADOPT, DON’T SHOP, AND REALISE IT IS A LIFELONG COMMITMENT." provided, and costs are covered. You can foster dogs or cats (all cats are indoor only). Other volunteer positions are also available – walkers, transporters, and administration. Cash or food donations are also always welcome to support the organisation's work, and there is also the opportunity to sponsor an animal with special needs who may need to live out their lives in foster care.

PETS OF THE MONTH

NALA | 1 year old Staffy

Snuggle up on the couch next to Nala. Nala is a peoplefriendly girl who enjoys sitting beside you on the sofa and snoozing. When the nap is over, Nala walks on the lead and enjoys playing in the yard. She knows recall to her name, sit and wait and is food motivated. She would thrive in a calm household with somebody she loves at home often. She prefers the company of people (men especially) and would be suitable as an only dog—no cats or pocket pets in the household. Nala has met children and would prefer the company of older children over 14 years.

Meet sweet Sooty! She was an outdoor cat but has adjusted well to being indoors. She loves her scratching pole, lolling in the sun, and surveying the world from the top of the cat tree. She is toilet trained and happily living with a (de-sexed male) cat and a dog. Sooty allows our older cat to groom her and is not shy about maintaining her position on the cat bed or my lap when SOOTY | 8 month old challenged by either of the other animals. Sooty is Domestic Short Hair a lovely and affectionate cat with gorgeously soft fur which lends itself to endless pats and head butts. Please contact Dog Rescue Newcastle if you want to adopt one of this month’s pets. www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au 35

On Tour With the Kid CHLOE O'SULLIVAN READ ONLINE

I'm Not Out; I'm at Work I am in an industry that is at its busiest in Summer. When people have free time and can get around, it is the perfect time to have an event. Recently, I ran into a friend who said, "I see you every time I'm out". Yes, you do. The difference is that when you head off for your second wine and a relaxing seat, I am heading back to deal with the logistics of what helps whatever you are there to see look good to the crowd. That's not a complaint. I actually love it. For us, and how I structured my work life, it has always included the kid. I have been lucky enough to work with (and for) people who understand that we are all away from our families too much. I'm in a unique position. You can't do that at every workplace; you can't even do that with every kid. Mine was aware early on that we were in a work environment and that mum had things to do. Now that she is older, she thrives in that environment. It made her very confident. We have done amazing things together because of my job. In the last 12 months, we have been to Uluru, she has helped out on stage at Summernats, been backstage for countless shows, events, and national media calls, and had a photo she took published overseas. I love that we have got to share all those moments. I'm also aware that she might 36

not want to do that soon. As she gets older, no matter what I do for a living, it won't seem as fun to her anymore. She will want to spend more time being independent and with her friends, and those moments we shared will become memories. Having always had ear protection on her at shows, I vividly remember her backstage at a Boy George concert with her big industrial headphones on. Her huge smile and her cute dance moves were silent testimony that she was having a good time. The summer holidays are always interesting for us. My social feed is filled with photos of friends in Bali or off lying on a beach. It's tough to plan when you are working back-to-back weekends, but we have become very good at making the most of those moments in between. Thankfully, we live in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, so a day trip can easily become a complete family adventure. Recently, we picked what seemed like the hottest day of the summer to head out to the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Light Spectacular and took some of the kid's friends (it’s already begun; a night with her mother wasn’t going to cut it!) Given that it was still 35 degrees at 6pm, we thought we would stop somewhere for dinner and found a surprising gem in Cessnock. The Vincent Street Kitchen used to be the old ex-service club. They are the perfect example of catering for kids and Vincent Street does it beautifully. The pool table and the cornhole set

were in this beautiful area that I could see from where we were sitting, so I wasn’t constantly getting up to check on them, which meant I could relax. Kids ate free with every adult meal the night we were there, so five of us with a few starters and meals only cost just over $100. The food was spectacular. They had a baked Brie on the menu that was mouthwatering. The kid's meals were huge, and I know this seems weird to be excited about, but the salad was one of the best I have had in ages, and I have been craving it ever since. The Christmas lights were, as always, sensational and between the eye rolls, the occasional smile back to me when her friends weren’t looking made me realise we still have a few adventures left together.

Supporting Emerging Hunter Writers A new collaboration between Newcastle Writers Festival and the University of Newcastle offers local emerging writers the opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s leading authors. The four-week course, Writing Place, begins mid-April and will be led by University of Newcastle creative writing academic and poet Dr Keri Glastonbury. The course also includes guest authors Amy Lovat, Kim Mahood, and

Charlotte Wood, who will participate in a series of hour-long online discussions about their work with festival director Rosemarie Milsom. Recent books by the three authors effectively evoke various settings, including Newcastle, Sydney, and rural and remote locations in Australia. This course is for readers who want to make the transition to becoming writers, who are happy to hear from the authors and read their

recent books, and then complete the in-person writing workshops, which will be held at the University of Newcastle’s NUspace building. At the conclusion of the four-week course, participants can submit a 3000-word draft to Dr Glastonbury for written feedback focusing on the evocation of environment. Newcastle Writers Festival director Rosemarie Milsom said the course was created in response to local demand and brings together “a brilliant University of Newcastle creative writing teacher with an impressive lineup of authors who have all featured in festival programs. Both Amy Lovat and Charlotte Wood are in our April festival program.” “The course offers local emerging writers a taste of what a writing course can offer, and it may end up inspiring someone to make the leap into more intensive study,” Milsom said. “Part of our remit is to support the growth of the literary sector, and the festival is committed to providing a platform for new talent of which there is no shortage in the Hunter.” MacLean’s Booksellers is offering course participants a 25% discount on books required for the course. Bookings are now open for the April course. Tickets are $350. To make a booking and to read a more detailed course schedule, visit www.newcastlewritersfestival. org.au/writing-course.

GUM DISEASE...

Simplified READ ONLINE

intouch contributor DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.

CHIA-WEN YEH BelleDental Chia is Belledental’s gum disease guru –dedicating herself in the realm of research and developing simple, effective strategies to control gum disease.

Have you ever had something explained to you in a really complex way and thought… there must be a simpler way? This is even more so when it is a medical condition; it is painless and results in your teeth falling out! Who thinks this stuff up???!

Gum Disease is real, and effective treatment is critical to you keeping your teeth… for life. Over the past three years, Belledental has developed some new and revolutionary gum disease treatment protocols and is inviting dental patients to challenge the commonly accepted “dental clean” that most patients have become acclimatised to, handing back independence to patients through simpler protocols. Dr Chia-Wen Yeh has developed and implemented this protocol in the management of gum disease of all degrees of severity and demonstrated notable reversal of gingivitis as quickly as 4-7 days.

The secret to Chia’s success is not just about abandoning the traditional dental clean; it has been about putting a twist on biofilm therapy, a non-invasive and non-surgical method to deliver a predictable return to healthy gums, for both patients with just inflamed gums, as well as patients with full-blown gum disease in as little as 7-14 days. We have seen some teeth that have gone from being somewhat wobbly to firm again. And yes, this protocol does encourage good bacteria over disease-causing bacteria. Let’s not forget about the most critical aspect of treating any disease: Education. Chia spends the time to not only provide thorough treatment of gum disease… “disinfection”, as Chia puts it, but also to explain how and why we are doing what we do, understanding the different appearances between disease and health and what action you can take to bring yourself back to health. The whole protocol is about developing as much dental resilience and independence in you: the patient! If your gums have always bled, or you’ve received an adverse diagnosis around gum disease, or your gums just don’t feel right, and you want better health and understanding around your oral health – call Belledental and ask for Chia!

Community News WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY? ARTS MINISTER MARKS MILESTONE AT NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY NSW Arts Minister John Graham has officially unveiled the foundation stone for the expansion of the Newcastle Art Gallery as work on the City of Newcastle's landmark infrastructure project continues. The moment marks a significant milestone in the Gallery's expansion, which hit new heights last month with the installation of a 33-metre-high tower crane to facilitate the next stage of construction. Minister Graham joined Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon and Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation Chair Suzie Galwey for the official ceremony, unveiling the bluestone paver commemorating the major funding partners involved. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said it was fitting to etch the name of the NSW Minister for the Arts and Tourism into a site that will become a regionally significant cultural destination. "By more than doubling the size of Newcastle Art Gallery and delivering a suite of modern facilities of international standing, this project will offer a home to one of Australia's most significant public art collections," Cr Nelmes said. Mr Graham, also the NSW Minister for Jobs, said seeing the positive economic impact this project would deliver for the community, now and into the future, was pleasing. "Major infrastructure projects provide a valuable economic boost to local communities, with the expansion of Newcastle Art Gallery creating 170 jobs, including 152 in construction and 18 ongoing once it is complete," he said. "This project is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when all levels of government and the local community work together to achieve a common goal, delivering positive benefits for the wider region for generations to come." The expansion project includes an additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space on the lower level with dedicated areas for the Gallery's collection, while the upper level will cater for a variety of travelling exhibitions, including international shows.

The project will deliver a new café and retail shop, multi-purpose and educational program space, and a secure international standard loading dock, and will extend the building's footprint east along Darby Street and Queen Street. The project is supported by $5 million from the Australian Government under the Regional Recovery Partnerships and $5 million from the New South Wales Government under the Regional Recovery Package, as well as $12 million from the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation made possible through the Valerie and John Ryan bequest, Margaret Olley Trust, and community fundraising over many years. A further $1 million is currently being sought through the Foundation's public fundraising campaign.

Newcastle Permanent Rutherford Branch Manager Hayden Pescud said that Cinema Under the Stars was a highlight of the summer calendar. “Cinema Under the Stars has become a tradition in the Hunter; the community loves attending it as much as Newcastle Permanent loves hosting,” said Mr Pescud. “As a customer-owned organisation, supporting local and giving back is what we stand for. of the many ways we contribute to the local Maitland and Lake Macquarie communities. “A relaxed summer evening with plenty for the kids to do and free popcorn, of course; what’s not to love? “Pack a picnic, bring the whole family, and get there early to enjoy all the fabulous, fun, free events and activities that help make Cinema Under the Stars such an awesome night!”

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR HONOURED FOR PIONEERING COVID-19 TREATMENT A dedicated medical researcher who helped develop an effective preventative treatment for respiratory viral diseases, including COVID-19, has been selected as Newcastle's 2024 Citizen of the Year. Professor Nathan Bartlett received the honour at City of Newcastle's award for his efforts across multiple research and education projects that will help future generations face the impact of respiratory infections including the COVID-19 virus. The viral immunology professor and lecturer at The University of Newcastle played an integral role in developing a nasal spray designed to prevent respiratory viral diseases such as COVID-19. The spray currently in clinical trials is designed for high-risk groups such as immunecompromised patients and the elderly, for whom vaccination may be less effective. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Mr Bartlett’s selection as Citizen of the Year recognises his ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes for others. “Professor Bartlett's pioneering medical research will save lives,” Cr Nelmes said. “As new variants of COVID-19 continue to make people very unwell, his integral role in

developing an effective treatment, particularly to help those in our community at the greatest risk of severe disease and death, remains vital. “He has spent countless hours educating the community and industry bodies such as the National Asthma Council to better understand and cope with COVID-19 and respiratory viruses and dedicates his time to teaching and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals and biomedical researchers. “The Citizen of the Year award is a fitting honour for his over 20 years of service to medical science and his care and commitment to the wellbeing of our community." Professor Bartlett said it was an honour to receive the award and to contribute to the incredible work being done in the region in the ongoing fight against COVID-19. Seventeen-year-old volunteer Olivia Hughes was named the 2024 Young Citizen of the Year for her selfless charity work and fundraising efforts. As a dedicated member of Nobby's SLSC since the age of five, Olivia has taught modified Nippers to children with disabilities and regularly volunteers at sporting events such as triathlons and surf competitions. After losing a childhood friend to cancer at age 10, the empathic teen began holding monthly craft sessions for sick kids and their

families at Ronald McDonald House and is a passionate fundraiser for charities, including Dr Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and SurfAid’s Make a Wave Challenge. Senior Citizen of the Year recipient Professor Julie Byles is a long-time advocate for the health of women and older people and has inspired many young researchers and PhD candidates during her 20 years as the Co-Director of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. After retiring in early 2023, Julie became the president of the Hunter Ageing Alliance and has since lent her skills to amplify the voices and needs of the over-60s in Newcastle. The LIVEfree Project has been named the 2024 Community Group of the Year in recognition of its work to elevate wellbeing and reduce loneliness in the community. Led by Chris Jones from its Adamstown base, the group was congratulated on becoming a trusted source of support for community members who have faced trauma and hardship and was recognised for their extensive school-based initiatives, including the Smile and Thrive Dental Program and the Shine Bright Program, which empowered children to face adversity while equipping them with vital life skills.

February Horoscopes ASTROLOGER KIM FAIRMINER ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

STAR OF THE MONTH AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Watch out, world! Aquarius season is in full swing, and this birthday year, you mean business. A New Moon in your sign helps you shake everything from the ground up and declare your bold intentions. It will take time, of course, to remake yourself in alignment with your vision, but make no mistake, it begins this month. You still have to pay your bills, though, and the Full Moon in your debt sector offers a helpful reminder that certain inevitabilities linger eternally. Take care of the necessary paperwork, then get back to your progressive agenda.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH Your subconscious mind is loud this month. Annoyingly so. Whether it’s your fears sneaking up on you at inconvenient moments or that weird feeling of being watched by ghosts, use the New Moon to break this strange standoff. It’s something you have to do independently. The good ship Pisces rights herself later in the month. Or maybe that’s your partner fishing you out of the deep by the Full Moon’s light? ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL February offers intentional moments for your friends – reach out, reconnect and enjoy. The power and purpose of these connections mean that any excuse is a good excuse to get together and collaborate. If there’s a lofty ideal driving these social connections, even better. While you love to go your own way, you will amplify your impact by working with others. TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY You’ve waited patiently for this moment, and it’s finally arrived. February is ripe for professional power moves and standing in your integrity at work. You command respect in your public life and can offer stability and wisdom when 42

everyone else is engulfed in the drama. And there will be some drama around the New Moon - try not to join in. A semblance of calm returns in the latter half of the month. GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE The call of the wild grows louder, and you yearn for a more visceral experience of the world around you. Material satisfaction is one thing, but you know there is more to life. A decision about work looms. You are ready to set off on your adventurous quest at the New Moon. As the Moon becomes full, your attention turns to home and family. Tune out the external noise and listen to what your soul is craving. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY There are some nitty-gritty issues to be taken care of in the realm of shared financial agreements – tax, retirement and estate planning – particularly around the New Moon. Long-term plans and preparing for the inevitable call for sensitive conversations followed by committed action. It’s not easy, but it is liberating. Sign binding legal contracts at the end of the month. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST A powerful new era of partnership growth begins this month. Profound moments of connection will take your breath away but do not entirely surrender yourself to the magnetic pull of your significant other. This applies to business buddies as much as emotional encounters. The deep pulsing undercurrent is not your imagination. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER Your nose is buried in busyness and appointments early in February, and when you look up, you find yourself in undulating terrain. You are in a situation where relationship boundaries must not only be set but also adhered to, a scenario that typically leaves even the most emotionally mature humans squirming. The Full Moon places you rather uncomfortably in the emotional spotlight. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Your creativity is on fire in February. Another possibility is that your kids are playing with matches. Involving them in your hobbies will

help keep them out of mischief. Profound leaps forward are possible when you break away from the herd and follow your own bliss – which is usually a tough ask for peace-loving Libra but is totally within your wheelhouse this month. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER You are digging deep in February and preparing to triumphantly return to the surface carrying deep soul wisdom. Investing in family, home and personal foundations are your top priority, and the New Moon paves the way for new beginnings in your private life. Be open to positive, if sudden, change. Expect more activity, more conversation and more visitors. Catch up with friends for a Full Moon frolic. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Your mind is sparkling with big ideas, which is great until it begins to interfere with a good night’s sleep and one’s routine obligations. Make dedicated time to listen to all the voices in your head. Let them make their point, maybe even take notes, and then ruthlessly mute them. You are a busy centaur and cannot be constantly available to all-comers. CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY Your financial ambition is soaring, and this month is a mere hint of where you want to end up. Not that your route to achieving your money goals is conventional. Far from it. The more creative and quirkier the activity, the better, as it helps you bust through lingering mindset issues and get to the bottom of what you truly value. The Full Moon helps you refine and add detail to your dreams.
