INSIDE INTOUCH

From the Editors... If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of that lovely house you drive by daily looks like, you could be in luck with the new TV program that’s based in and around our hometown. Longtime NBN producer Kerryn Scully was one of the creative minds behind the concept behind the new show Location... Lifestyle... Living and says Newcastle and the Hunter are ideally suited to this style of show. In this issue, we talk to Kerryn, as well as the shows two presenters, seasoned renovator and home-styling expert Naomi Findlay and ex-Screaming Jets drummer turned auctioneer Craig Rosevear, both proud Novocastrians who loves showcasing our hometown to a wider television audience. For Newcastle’s Amelia Matheson ice hockey isn’t just a sport – it’s her life. After falling in love with the sport at 12, Amelia has travelled the world, making a name for herself as a member of the Australian women’s ice hockey team, as well as the captain of the Sydney Sirens in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League.

ISSUE #38 OCTOBER 2018

With its world-renowned beaches and temperate winter climate, ice hockey isn’t exactly the first sport of choice you’d associate with Newcastle, but Amelia tells us just why the sport is so appealing and a great alternative for kids to the traditional netball and soccer.

When the Lake Macquarie Garden Club opens up ten unique, neverbeen-seen-before gardens to the public for a weekend at the end of this month, it will not only be a celebration of Spring, but an opportunity for the wider community to raise much-needed funds for medical research undertaken by Hunter Medical Research Institute. Find out more about the Lake Macquarie Garden Art Trail and how you can get onboard on page 18. You may recall our cover story last month about the Build For A Cure home that was to be built to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Institute. The great news is that in just 21 days this amazing home came to fruition and this month will be auctioned off to a lucky buyer. Every dollar from the sale of the home by auction on 21st October will go to lifesaving research by the Children’s Cancer Institute. It’s open for inspection now – so head out to The Bower to take a look and maybe make a bid on Auction day! Enjoy!

The Legendary Glenn Shorrock Saturday 10 November, 2018

Don't miss this show. With a career spanning over 40 years, Glenn Shorrock is one of the elder statesmen of Australian contemporary show business. Born in Kent, England, Glenn migrated with his family at the age of 10 to Adelaide in the mid-1950's. A self-confessed child of rock 'n' roll, he began singing in 1962 with a vocal group called the Twilights. By 1965, the Twilights had become a six-piece "beat group" based in Melbourne scoring hits with Needle in a Haystack, What's Wrong with the Way I Live?, Cathy Come Home and Young Girl, before disbanding in 1969. Axiom with Brian Cadd followed shortly after that, with hits including Arkansas Grass and Little Ray of Sunshine. Axiom disbanded soon after moving to London in 1970, but Glenn chose to remain in London as a session singer and songwriter working with other ex-pats and Europeans in a twelve-piece rock orchestra named Esperanto. At the conclusion of 1974, Glenn returned to Melbourne to help form Little River Band as lead singer and the rest is history! Managed by long-time friend, Glenn Wheatley, Little River Band cracked the lucrative United States market in 1976 and began a string of eight Top Ten Hits in the USA and around the world. The band has sold more than 25 million albums and is often credited as opening the door for many Australian acts on the international circuit.

Scorpio 23 October - 21 November This month, Scorpios fall into a meditative mood, with important matters best tackled after some thought. And if you’re still feeling uncertain, do what most do in times of confusion and call in the experts - be they financial, physical or spiritual. It’s a sure bet someone else has already mapped the pitfalls and plotted a safe way home. There’s a mine of good advice for tapping. You don’t need to do everything yourself.

Many Librans have had their resilience put to the test. Feeling heavily burdened, you’ve been trying to carry the world on your shoulders. It’s time to realign your affairs so that you feel on top of the world rather than beneath it. However, before you start anything new, draw up the pros and cons of each situation. Good fortune is coming your way on many levels this year, but you must stay ahead of the game. Competitors will always be trailing close behind. The best news? Finances receive special focus. So as you make up your birthday wish list for love, good health and happiness, don’t forget to include your financial plan. It seems you have many reasons to celebrate!

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December October threatens to send finances into a spin. Remember, while grandiose schemes give you something to aspire to, they can also break the bank. Fortunately, your sensible side should step in before spending gets too out of hand. Also, a friend or relative wants your help. If they're too intrusive, set them straight. Sometimes, even loved ones have to learn from their own mistakes.

Aquarius 20 January - 18 February You have some pretty high expectations at the moment, and not all of them can be met. If this becomes frustrating, don’t resort to anger. Likewise, your advice should not be pitched as caustic criticism. Take it easy on everyone, including yourself. Crush the wrong set of toes, and offended dance partners may decide to call a separate tune. Not the outcome you’d hoped for.

Pisces 19 February - 20 March Obsessions, or one particular project, rule October’s agenda. Ideas become more intense as spiritual and intellectual awareness deepens. Pisceans seek greater personal power through the use of knowledge, travel or meditation. For many, this means a step up the career ladder. Others will notice your talents and welcome you into a new work arena. Interestingly, business and romantic alliances may not be too far removed.

Taurus 21 April - 20 May If you’ve been feeling sad, perhaps you’ve been missing passion or romance. Not so through October. Radiating sensuality, how can you fail to be the centre of attention? The trick is to take a break from others’ self-inflicted grief. Their web of discontent prevents your own self-care. Surround yourself with beauty and those closest to your heart. Love changes everything, as you may now rediscover.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June It’s my guess you need a rest. Take advantage of October, which offers a spot of relaxation: maybe some contemplation. Find somewhere warm kick through the sand; curl up under the doona. Some of you, though, find it hard to slam on the brakes. Try, or you’ll end up exhausted when work spurs into overdrive at month’s end. In the meanwhile, open up to the possibility of love - it’s closer than you think.

Leo 23 July - 22 August It doesn’t matter whether you focus on travel, moving house, career or love - expect some positive changes. Some say you’re impatient. Possibly, but only regarding the trivial. When it comes to serious matters, you have the strength of a Lion. This is the resolve you’ve had to call on, and it’s made you more confident. Give the world your best shot, Leo - you won’t be disappointed.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September There’s enough information overload in each day to drive us crazy, so we all need a chance to escape. October encourages you to do just that, but try getting away before friends and family apply the emotional vice. To help travel arrangements, finances look sharp - so the time seems right for extravagance. Help can also come from unexpected sources, so use this month to push other aims skywards.

NOW OPEN Riot Art & Craft - Ground Floor near Coles Casey Toys - Level 1 near Target

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January Domesticity takes up much of your time this month. You may redecorate, move house or simply organise a family reunion. Friends and family could also plan a surprise for you. Whatever the case, the planets put you in the mood to commit. It’s also a heart-to-heart time, which could mean airing long-held grievances. The upside? You’re no longer held captive by hidden feelings. Aries 21 March - 20 April Who could blame you for giving up on love after the troubles of recent times? But you can sometimes expect too much from partners, which in turn can bring disappointment. Ask yourself: have you been overly demanding or too detached? At times we erect walls to protect ourselves, shutting others out. Demolish any barriers, and you’ll have a better chance of finding your soul mate. Cancer 22 June - 22 July When you feel torn between two worlds, certain aspects of your life can lose out to other concerns. But neglected interests will eventually stir aggravation. Thankfully, October restores balance and commitment swerves towards longterm relationships. Realign priorities, then find some loving company and relax. After the 21st, clear plenty of diary space for carnal delights.

to complete his real estate agent’s license. Not long before he finished, he attended an auction night with a mate and was struck by the skills of one of Australia’s leading auctioneers Damien Cooley, who is also well known from his work on the TV series The Block. “I went to the auction, and I’m like ‘Wow, that guy's amazing, like I want to do that, be an auctioneer’,” Craig said.

“So at the end of the auction I went up to him, and I said, ‘Hey Damien, I'm Craig. I love what you do. How do I get to do that?’ And he looks at me, and he goes, ‘Cut your hair, shave off your goatee, take those earrings out, take your nose ring out, buy a blue suit and come back and see me in two weeks’. “So sure enough, in two weeks’ time I did all that and looked completely different – people didn’t even recognise me walking down the street, I hadn’t had short hair for 20 years. But then I came back and Damien’s like, ‘So you’re serious?’ and he started giving me some tips every couple of weeks when he came back up to Newcastle from Sydney to do the auctions.” At Damien’s suggestion Craig entered the Real Estate Institute of NSW Novice Auctioneers Competition, and after winning the Newcastle heat, he started working for Cooley Auctions. The rest, as they say, is history, with his industry know-how, rock profile and affable personality putting Craig at the top of the list when NBN Productions went looking for potential co-hosts for Location... Lifestyle... Living. “They were just looking, I guess, for someone a bit fresh, who wasn't a standard real estate agent sort of person, someone who could connect a lot of people to a property-based show but not in a sales way, just in a human interest way, which is what I love to do, I love to meet new people,” Craig said. “I feel very comfortable in front of a crowd, and I’ve done lots of stuff in front of the camera, whether it be music based, or videos and that sort of stuff, it doesn't faze me. “No part of the show seems like a job; it’s just like what I do anyway, talking to people. That’s pretty easy.

“And I think that’s one of the strengths of the show. It doesn't appear to be like an infomercial or anything like that where people are reading the lines because we're just really having a conversation, everyone's got a story about how they got to where they are. “I love meeting people; I love hearing their stories, I love giving them a platform to be able to share their stories. “I also love going to look at the houses for sale; it’s like a discovery. A lot of people drive past houses, and they're like, ‘I wonder what's inside, I wonder who owns that?’, and we have that opportunity now to go in and see what's in there. “It’s fun from that perspective, and I think it's a good opportunity to learn things. We interview people, and you ask them why do they live there, how did they get to where they are, why they do the job they do. To me, that’s really interesting.” Aside from introducing high profile locals and seeing inside some of the region’s most sought-after properties, the show also offers a wealth of useful tips for viewers on everything from staging your home for sale to how to save more on your energy bills. Craig even put his auctioneer’s skills to use in a practical behind-the-scenes segment on what really goes on when you sell your house under the hammer. “The benefits of an auction are that it's out in front of everybody, it's very transparent, people can see what other people are happy to spend, and it also gives the people who own the home the opportunity to see where the market is and then as the decision maker, if they want to accept that offer or not,” he said. “Because I’ve bought and sold at auction many times myself I kind of can understand what it’s like being on both sides of the equation. So, that empathy is important I think. “For most people it’s the biggest transaction of their life, so you can’t act like it's just another auction, it’s a significant event in people’s lives, selling a family home that your kids might have grown up in and then buying a home where you want your kids to grow up, a lot of that emotion is connected with the transactions. “But you’re not just hearing this advice on the show from someone from Sydney or Melbourne who you’ve never known, you’re hearing advice from people who you probably will walk past in the street, people that you see or know of regularly and I think that’s important.” Another person with plenty of industry know-how to share is Craig’s co-host on the show, Naomi Findlay. A seasoned renovator who has made a successful career out of sharing her renovation and home staging knowledge with others across Australia and around the (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) world, Naomi is also a proud Novocastrian who loves showcasing her hometown to a wider television audience. “It’s local people talking about local people, local property and local things, which I think is probably the appeal for Novocastrians,” she said. “We have so much awesomeness in this region, and we’re truly passionate about its awesomeness. And the viewers love it because they’re really proud of where we live. “It also has that behind-the-scenes glimpse, it shows the city we love and the region we love and at the same time, gives you a sneak peek into different things. “I was so lucky to grow up in Newcastle, and even after travelling the world I always intended on moving back home to enjoy the best of everything. “Location... Lifestyle... Living is the TV show that will inspire Australians to come and see this beautiful city for its amazing beaches, quirky cafes and the gorgeous Hunter Valley region.” Being on camera isn’t a new experience for the Wallsend businesswoman, however, who caught the eye of the NBN Productions team via her YouTube based broadcast, The Reno Show. And although making the switch from her starring in her own production to the reality of working with a commercial television crew might sound daunting, Naomi has taken it all in her very professional stride. “To be honest I don't think about [being on camera] much,” she said. “Some may say it is an asset; I say at times it’s a challenge, in that I'm very congruent to who I am all the time. So it was just like I’m just here doing what I love with people that are really cool. And if anything it was fun; it is fun and exciting to create Location... Lifestyle... Living. “I get to meet really amazing people that are doing amazing things, or that have done amazing things or that are bringing things to the Hunter and I literally just chat with them – none of it is scripted. “I get to ask them all about the thing that they love, and I think that's what makes it really fun, it’s not about delivering lines, it’s about being real and helping show the other really cool people we have in our community. “It's been really exciting, it’s reconnecting me with how amazing the place we live in really is, and I feel quite privileged that I get to be part of something that’s showcasing this city.” Making the show an even more familiar experience for Naomi are the segments filmed by resident tradie Rowan

Howard, who is one of her regular expert guests on The Reno Show. More familiar faces are on offer for viewers of Location... Lifestyle... Living as well, with the Newcastle husband and wife team of Kim and Chris Elliott, who took part in the 2016 series of The Block, on hand to offer weekly styling and staging tips. Finding the right mix of presenters was crucial to the show’s success, according to its creator. “Craig is very good with people, and he’s very relatable,” Kerryn said. “I wanted to have a Novocastrian to do the hosting, I knew Craig, and I had him in mind from the start before it was even in the pilot stage. Naomi, we came across through her YouTube channel, and she’s been amazing. “I think the response to the show has been so positive and I guess the key to that along with a great crew has been the presenters. They’re very natural and genuine, and they’ve really got a knack to make those around them feel comfortable in an often daunting situation, and viewers can really relate to that. “If you don't work in TV or you’ve never been around it, and you come on this show it can be quite overwhelming, and Naomi and Craig are really good at making them feel comfortable and for getting the best out of them. They’re very good at letting that conversation flow and doing the best segment we possibly can. “Kim and Chris bring that element of styling to it, and they also have a lot of fun with it as well. “Staging, styling and tips for your home have really in the last year come into play to sell your house, and it's now all about the staging and how it looks so that people see it and fall in love with it. “And Kim and Chris having been on The Block is good – just to give it that little bit of profile. “They've been fantastic, they’re just a lot of fun, and they’re really good at what they do. “The response to the show has been really positive; people are loving it. “It goes to air on 9 Newcastle, but after it goes to air it’s also on our website (9Now), so we're now having international people seeing it and loving it. It definitely is putting Newcastle out there, which is great and I’m really excited about how much people have really responded to it.” Location... Lifestyle... Living goes to air on 9 Newcastle every Saturday at 12.30pm. The final episode of season one will be broadcast on Saturday, October 27. ■

KALLIDAD and BAND OF DAWN Sunday, October 21st at Lizotte's Kallidad and Band of Dawn are on tour together this October and Lizotte’s audiences are in for an other-worldly experience (to say the least!) when they perform as a heart-racing double feature at Lizotte’s. Both bands are celebrating recent releases, Kallidad’s album Flamingo and Band of Dawn’s EP The Spinning Jenny: Vol. 2, produced by Jeff Martin (The Tea Party). Band of Dawn are no strangers to NSW – they have toured through previously with Jeff Martin and The Tea Party, as well as their own headline tour. Kallidad: has evolved into a world-class headline act in the most unlikely of ways. All instrumental, Kallidad do not need to utter one word to create a bond with their audience, combining Spanish guitar styles with Heavy Metal roots to create an unmistakable sound that has seen the group visit Europe, Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand. One of Australia’s hardest working bands, they are constantly crisscrossing the great southern continent, spreading their music and engaging with the land itself. The lineup is simple two Spanish guitars and percussion. But don’t let the lightweight set-up fool you! Band of Dawn: is a 6-piece AUS/CAN World-inspired folk-rock group exploding with spine-tingling harmonies, richly textured strings and blood-pumping tribal percussion. There are particularly mixed bloodlines in the group, flavouring their tribal soundscapes and exotic "East-meets-West" neo-Victorian aesthetic. The all-nations battalion is celebrating the longawaited release of The Spinning Jenny: Volume 2. This comes after a spectacular run of shows at Woodford Folk Festival 17/18, where the album was successfully debuted as a limited edition pre-release. Visit www.lizottes.com.au for tickets.

Lake Macquarie Garden Club was formed 35 years ago and has only 38 members – with some of the founding members still amongst them. On the third Tuesday of every month, the group gets together to explore their own and other gardens. This year, the club is planning to open ten such gardens to the public for a weekend, that will not only be a celebration of Spring but provide the group with an opportunity to show the wider community the beauty of a garden along with artworks and raise money for medical research undertaken by Hunter Medical Research Institute. “Our area has many talented artists; painters, printmakers, sculptors, potters, felt workers and calligraphers. It seemed the perfect combination; beautiful gardens, big and bold, small and intricate in which to exhibit artworks. Some of the gardens were professionally designed, others the result of hard yakka and dedication by the owners. The artists exhibiting in the gardens, under a pergola or in a garage, are as varied as the gardens,” said Club Coordinator, Lynne Turner. Each garden will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of October. Entry will be by donation of $5 per garden or $35 for all ten gardens, with all money collected going to HMRI. HMRI also has its annual open day this month – on the Friday 12th October from 10am -3pm. The research centre will welcome the community with a Health and Medical Research Expo, laboratory tours, kids interactive science activities, and a Science Meets Fiction talk by Dr Luke Hesson.

Take the kids along for a fun and educational day out during the school holidays. “Last year we raised $25K over the two days, and with Council support for the printing and marketing, I am sure that we can do even better this year. Even more importantly, community fundraising attracts further significant funds from the federal government to assist in further research projects,” said Lynne. The open gardens are located on both eastern and western sides of Lake Macquarie. From the Marks Point in the south to Jewells, Mt Hutton, Speers Point, Bolton Point, to Toronto and Coal Point on the western side of the Lake. All the gardens are unique gardens that haven’t been shown to the public previously. Owners of the properties will be on hand to answer your questions and share their passion for gardening and morning and/or afternoon tea/coffee will be available at some of the gardens. Why not get a group together to have a day out with lunch in the area at restaurants, cafés or even a picnic in a park – as simple or as sophisticated as you desire. Details and maps are available for you to plan your day out – check out some of the posters around the community or visit the clubs Facebook page at www. facebook.com/Lake-Macquarie-GardenClub). Businesses displaying the posters will also be able to provide you with a flyer and map. Round up friends and family for a wonderful weekend of spectacular gardens. New Playground Complete in time for Build For A Cure Auction More than 950 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia, and one in six children die as a result. Sadly, around 50 of these children diagnosed are from the Hunter. This year the McCloy Group and McDonald Jones Homes joined forces with the Children's Cancer Institute to launch Build For A Cure 2018, a major fundraising initiative in which a house was built from the ground up in just 21 days at The Bower, Medowie. Currently open for inspection, the stunning four bedroom home comes complete with Freedom furnishings, Fisher & Paykel and Winning Appliances and an abundance of upgrades from McDonald Jones Homes. Every dollar from the sale of the home by auction on 21st October will go to lifesaving research by the Children’s Cancer Institute. Chairman of McCloy Group, Jeff McCloy, commented that as a company “We believe it’s important to give back to the community that supports us and working with the Children’s Cancer Institute to bring childhood cancer to zero is imperative. Together we’re building a home in a community, to support an amazing outcome to cure childhood cancer.” “We’re very proud of the exceptional living environments we produce throughout the Hunter and New England,” said Jeff. “The Bower is no exception and will provide a very attractive setting for the home buyer.” All about family-living, The Bower will launch a onehectare family park this October, just in time for the lucky family to move into the ‘house built with love’. The super park is a quick stroll from the home and has facilities for adults and children alike. Families can look forward to enjoying everything from shooting hoops on the mixed court with both basketball and netball hoops, along with a mixture of slides, spiral climb, triple swing and even a 4m skyclimber… just to name a few. For the big kids, there is an adult outdoor exercise station with equipment for upper body workouts, push-ups, sit-ups and stretching.

Places that, we ourselves would be proud to call home.” “We place a strong emphasis on creating an exceptional living environment through vibrant public art, aesthetically pleasing streetscapes, lively children’s playgrounds, cycleways and landscaped parklands” added Brian Swaine, McCloy Group Managing Director. The Bower certainly presents a unique living opportunity in Medowie with a mixture of residential and rural residential homesites. This October the last of the acreage homesites will hit the market, a sought-after release with blocks from 1010 square meters to 5000 square meters. The community has been designed to be sympathetic to the surrounding area and complement the Medowie lifestyle, with 70 hectares of The Bower retained as Medowie State Conservation Area. See the stunning Build for a Cure home yourself at one of the open homes or on 21st October for the final auction.

The Audreys are a triple ARIA Award-winning Australian blues/roots band who formed in Adelaide in 2004 and have spent their entire career signed with ABC Music. The Audreys are comprised principally of Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall with a cast of ne'er-do-wells who've played with them over the years. The precursor to The Audreys started in Melbourne as a duo consisting of lead singer Taasha and guitarist Tristan. An impromptu jam session with a bluegrass band inspired them to change direction from pop music to the folk and blues music they preferred, and the two moved back to Adelaide, where they formed The Audreys along with Cameron Goodall, Tristan's brother, and Michael Green. At the end of 2017, The Audreys completed a sellout national tour performing their award-winning debut album to celebrate 11 years since its release. It was so well received that they decided to go back out on the road adding the rest of their illustrious repertoire to the show earlier in 2018 as part of the special Spiegeltent tour. They are now back again in Newcastle for the second half of 2018, pawning their very hearts for rock and roll. Visit www.lizotte's.com.au for tickets.

Meet the Maker...

The Perfect Hat... Twelve Months in the Making WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer

For Nikita Rolleston, it seemed only natural that a lifelong love of wearing hats evolved into a full-time career crafting them by hand. The Cronulla-based milliner and her mother Audrey Rolleston are the creative team behind The Salty Crown, a boutique business lovingly creating a unisex range of stylish fedora-style hats using traditional methods. While Nikita’s passion may have started many years ago, her journey towards launching her own range began in earnest in 2016. “I have always worn hats since I was a kid and it was the only thing I agreed with my mum to wear!” Nikita said. “I never grew out of wearing one and decided to learn more about how to actually make a hat, so two years ago I did a three-day millinery workshop, which enabled me to take skills and ideas away with me. I also researched old traditional ways of hat making and took a lot from that too. “From then on it has been all trial and error and ‘learn as you go’, trying to perfect techniques and also better them.

the best part about it. I literally woke up one morning with an idea of a new style and had to get straight to the studio and start creating it while the idea was still fresh in my mind.” While designers often have trouble picking a favourite from among their collection Nikita doesn’t hesitate when asked about hers. “Definitely the ‘White Mamba’,” she said. “Not only is it a part of the original collection, but the style was also inspired from a family trip to South Africa, while I was on a safari. Being born in South Africa and being my first time back since moving to Australia, the ‘White Mamba’ just holds some sentimental value and memories from that family holiday.” For Nikita and her mother though, establishing The Salty Crown has been about more than just launching a new It took me one year to perfect a hat and be happy with the business, thanks to their core focus on sustainability and end result. HOME PORT

At Cooks Hill Galleries

This month, Cooks Hill Galleries (CHG) presents Gavin Fry Home Port, with co-exhibitors Carolyn van Wamel (impressionist/abstract landscape paintings) and David Beschi (watercolour paintings). The exhibition opened on 28 September and will continue through until 22 October.

A colour consultation with Bristol Paint Specialists can save time and money with the right advice.

They’ll let you know what you need to bring along; for example, house plans, photos, carpet or tile samples, and inspirational images. The colour expert will ask about what you are trying to achieve with your project, whether it’s inside, outside or just one room, taking into consideration elements such as furniture, accessories, lighting and streetscape. The consultant will also recommend the best paint and finish. Bookings are essential – visit www.booking. bristol.com.au/book-an-appointment. Bristol Paint Specialists can also assist with your wallpaper requirements as one of the leading suppliers of quality designer wallpapers in the region. They carry a huge selection of wallcoverings, offering inspiration when it comes to making your house a home. From traditional damasks and paintable Anaglyptas, to the what’s trending now in timber and wood, brick wallpaper and other textural designs including stunning classic Grasscloth wallpaper and luxe metallic finishes. Check out some of the luxe wallpapers currently on offer in our “Black & White” feature on page 24. October is a great month to give your place a facelift with massive savings at the Bristol Spring Sale, where you can buy 6 litres of paint for the price of 4 litres. For more information, store opening hours and a handy paint calculator, visit www.bristol.com.au

At the opening night, CHG released Artist, Gavin Fry’s new publication, Home Port, featuring contemporary art of the Newcastle coast and industrial seascape in a way you've never seen it before. The book will be available throughout the exhibition (RRP$20). "It is just on twenty years since I dropped anchor in Newcastle and made it my home port. When I returned to painting after a four-decade layoff, I took the most basic advice to aspiring artists... paint what you know! I understand a bit about ships and, living next to the harbour, find endless subjects with the great bulk carriers and busy tugs seen against the architecture of this fascinating city," says Fry. How one Cosmetic Procedure Solves two Beauty Problems It’s not unusual to come across a beauty treatment that seems too good to be true – especially if the procedure is reportedly an effective solution to help manage two different problem areas when it comes to enhancing one’s natural appearance. Whether it’s for aesthetic or therapeutic purposes, Intense Pulsed Light, commonly referred to as IPL, is a popular technique that helps improve a variety of skin conditions. It is also a treatment for reducing and removing unwanted body hair. IPL is a technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners whereby fibroblasts in the dermis of the skin are stimulated to promote the growth of new collagen. The process involves a broad spectrum of high-intensity light that is emitted at multiple wavelengths. Unlike laser hair removal, which uses a laser light source to emit one single focused wavelength to maximise follicle absorption, IPL can treat larger areas of unwanted hair growth.

Mums Battling Health Issues Hit the Beach for Summer Swimsuit Shoot! Summer is fast approaching, and for a lot of mums, the thought of wearing swimwear and exposing their bodies on the beach is frightening. But nine Australian mums, who have had health and weight issues, are determined to empower all mums this summer by showcasing their swimsuit bodies.

According to Dr Rastogi Bella Face Cosmetic Surgery & Medi Spa Practice Manager, Jenna Cambourn, this type of skin rejuvenation results in a smoother, brighter complexion which improves overall tone and texture, and is particularly effective in treating medical skin issues. “For people managing rosacea, acne, pigmentation spots caused by sun damage, and broken capillaries, IPL been described as a life changer,” Ms Cambourn said. “It’s a treatment in constant demand by patients seeking corrective enhancements, whether they be health-related or visually more appealing.” IPL is most often used to treat the face, neck and décolletage, but can also be used on any other areas including the back of the hands and arms. It can be helpful in reducing unwanted freckles caused by chronic sun exposure as the process targets melanin, a pigment found in skin cells. “As with many treatments, the procedure is not a one-off, and for best results, it is recommended to have at least four sessions separated by monthly intervals,” Ms Cambourn explained. The subject of hair removal methods, whether to shave, wax, pluck or use special creams, can be a sensitive one – literally. Shaving, for instance, can promote in-grown hairs which can become painful and sometimes infected, while other methods can be messy, time consuming and irritating. Whatever your views, IPL has now become a popular hair removal choice across many age groups, notably among millennials. “Our highly trained therapists use medical grade devices and deliver an extremely versatile method that can be applied safely and effectively to undesirable body hair on the face, bikini line, underarms and other problematic areas,” Ms Cambourn explained. “Because it is neither a surgical nor an invasive procedure, patients favour IPL because it provides quicker results with less downtime, and there’s no need to take any time off work.” Dr Rastogi Bella Face Cosmetic Surgery & Medi Spa is located at Honeysuckle, Newcastle. The Healthy Mummy, Australia’s largest parenting health site exclusively for mums, is turning eight and to celebrate has partnered with JETS swimwear in an inspiring and powerful swimsuit shoot with mums from different stages of life who have successfully overcome health issues after joining The Healthy Mummy and have collectively lost almost 300kg. The Healthy Mummy rolled out the pink carpet for the event as the nine mums were photographed in a series of beautiful photos modelling the brand’s new range of swimwear. The shoot took place in a Spanish-inspired villa on location at Manly in Sydney, around a waterfront pool with spectacular Sydney harbour views, and was made complete with cool cocktails, cabana lounges and a DJ. Each mum shared their extraordinary story with nothing but confidence and some real advice for other mums. Founder of The Healthy Mummy Rhian Allen said we have two choices every summer – to put on a swimsuit and enjoy the beach with your children or hide away. “As a mum, you can celebrate your body and what it has achieved, or cover up under lots of clothing and miss out on summer beach memories with your children. Many women do the latter, and they talk about their regret in doing so. The one thing that unites these women is they have overcome serious health issues like diabetes, anxiety and depression, obesity and thyroid issues. “A pool party is a perfect way to make a splash and celebrate our mums – I hope we can inspire more women and mums to be body confident this summer,” added Rhian. Blepharoplasty...

Changes to Medicare From 1 November WORDS DR GARY AVERY - FRACS (Plast Surg) Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Avery Plastic Surgery.

Upper eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty) involves removing excess skin from the eyelid. As we age the skin of the upper eyelid can become loose, which can lead to a number of problems. It can cause irritation and infection; it may start to interfere with vision - acting as a shade over the visual field, and the constant activation of the forehead muscles to lift the excess skin up and out of the visual field can lead to headaches. Some people also choose to have the loose

skin removed for primarily aesthetic reasons before it has a corresponding functional problem. Medicare is the Commonwealth Government of Australia’s universal health scheme. It includes some operations performed by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons if they are classified as medically necessary as opposed to operations performed for purely aesthetic reasons. If a procedure is deemed medically necessary, there will be a Medicare Item Number assigned to it. If there is an item number there will be some kind of rebate; there may also be ‘out of pocket’ costs also. Until 1 November, blepharoplasty is eligible for a Medicare rebate if the upper eyelid skin is seen to be resting on the eyelashes when looking straight ahead thereby obscuring your vision. Other indications for the surgery that attract a Medicare rebate include: addressing injury including skin scarring or nerve damage, and addressing problematic fat bulging from the eye socket - often related to thyroid disease. Currently, the assessment of the degree of visual obstruction has rested on individual patient reporting, followed by confirmation of this by a Doctor’s physical examination with no special investigations required. In the last few years, the Department of health has been looking at the Medicare schedule to ensure Medicare is not being used for purely cosmetic surgery purposes. Changes in the Medicare Benefits Schedule have been announced for item numbers thought to be at risk of cosmetic misuse including blepharoplasty. Effective from 1 November this year, patients will be required to have visual obstruction related to excess upper eyelid skin confirmed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist in order to be eligible for a Medicare rebate. The criteria for Medicare rebates for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery means that not all people will qualify

for a rebate and even fewer people after the 1st of November. People who do not qualify for a rebate might still benefit from the procedure. People who feel there is excess upper eyelid skin that is becoming evident in their visual field or those suffering skin and eyelid irritation or a feeling of heaviness due to the skin may still benefit from the surgery even if formal visual field testing does not yet reveal an abnormality. In some ways, this may be addressing the problem before it becomes too severe. The best way to determine what your procedure will cost, with or without a Medicare rebate and private health insurance, is to have a consultation with a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who will spend time talking with you about your concerns and determine with you the most appropriate surgery, including all of the risks and benefits and costs involved. Medicare does not pay for hospital admission into a private hospital - this is considered one of your ‘out of pocket’ expenses - although your private health insurance might cover this cost if a Medicare item number applies to your surgery and you have the appropriate level of cover. An uncomplicated upper eyelid procedure is generally a day surgery in an accredited hospital, lasting under one hour, depending on any additional operations, with another hour of recovery time before the patient can go home. Bruising and swelling usually subsides 1-2 weeks after the operation, and approximately one week off work is recommended. The full results can take six months to a year to take effect. Dr Avery has operated as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in the Hunter region for over five years, treating over 5000 people with reconstructive or aesthetic procedures.

Gain Freedom From Public Speaking Anxiety WORDS BRETT CAMERON - Cameron Hypnotics

Do you notice that just the thought of having to do a presentation or to speak in public can turn your stomach into knots? Do you have heart palpitations and sweaty palms? Do you feel as if your brain has frozen and thoughts won’t convert into words? You are not alone. Thousands of people experience public speaking stress and anxiety every day, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You might exude confidence in other areas of your life, yet if you are asked to stand and present to a group of people, that confidence goes out the window and a shy and awkward different part of you takes over. I was once one of those people. Before I had a career change and became a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I was a National Sales Manager for a multinational company in Sydney. I can recall presenting at conferences to a crowd of

people and feeling a wave of dread washing over me. I was fine after the event, but during the speech, I would be secretly wishing for the ground to open up and swallow me. So what did I do? I saw a Clinical Hypnotherapist in Sydney. Under hypnosis, my mind went back to a moment when I was 10. I was standing on the stage at The Junction Demonstration School (yes I have returned home) delivering my “I want to be school captain” speech. I was so confident that I chose not to refer to my written speech. Guess what? I froze. The words and sentences that I had practised and memorised had now disappeared. There on the stage in front of the school, stood a once cocky 10-year-old boy. And I had nowhere to hide. That moment must have had an impact because I can recall many times after that event where in high school, socially and in business, I would become anxious if asked to present. And like many of the clients who I have helped to put anxiety into the past, I also asked: “why didn’t I see a hypnotherapist earlier?” So what does the hypnotherapist do in this situation? I hold the view that for every experience in life, your unconscious mind will store the memory of that event, the learning from that event, and if that event is either significant or traumatic, then we will also store the emotion from that event. It is the emotion that the unconscious mind uses as a reference point. When the client is in a trance, I will be asking the client’s unconscious mind to release the emotion from the troubling events and to anchor the understanding that the client is now safe. The problem is now over. It is in the past. The client is now safe to proceed in life with memories and learnings, and having no negative emotional attachment to those past memories. The client is giving themselves a software upgrade. The old bugs and glitches are now in the past. Over three sessions of hypnotherapy and NLP, I will help the client to: • Put anxiety into the past. • Be more confident and aware of words, tonality and the power of body language. • Gain a working understanding of breath control, pausing and emphasis. • Learn to present from the heart. Are you ready to speak with calm confidence? To help people deal with this problem, we have created a - Session Public Speaking Confidence program for $399. Check out the website for payment options. Resilience & TENACITY WORDS ANNE WARD – Mindinsight

Continuing our series on resilience, this article looks at the skill of tenacity. This is one of six skills that build resilience. Vision – Like a compass, providing purpose and direction Composure – Managing emotions related to stress Reasoning – Problem-solving Tenacity – Persevering, learning from successes and setbacks Collaboration – Reaching out for support Health – Maintaining healthy habits What makes success? There is a range of personal qualities that might be considered ingredients for success in different fields. These include intelligence, creativity, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, charisma, physical attractiveness. However, a long-standing question has been: why do some individuals accomplish more than others of equal talent and ability? Research has shown that there is one quality that stands out - grit.

Grit is the ability to persevere. This involves having the staying power to work toward goals and maintain effort and interest, despite setbacks and plateaus in progress. It’s similar to the difference between running a 100-metre race, compared to a marathon. One relies on speed; the other relies on stamina. The gritty individual stays the course, rather than getting bored and giving up. Grit is more important than intelligence or talent, to success. A study of high achievers in chess, music and the visual arts found that over ten years of deliberate daily practice set expert performers apart. 20 years of dedicated practice was the most reliable predictor of world-class achievement. In education, determination, capacity for hard work and follow-through have been found to be more reliable in predicting achievement, than intelligence alone. Skills that build grit – optimism, handling mistakes, perseverance Optimism – The idea that “I can be whoever I want to be” is not particularly helpful. Optimism is about having a realistic sense of a) what is possible and b) what effort will be needed to achieve the desired result. Realistic optimism is about being hopeful, but still acknowledging difficulties that will need to be overcome. Being overly optimistic can be as detrimental as being pessimistic because it means that our imagination is out-pacing reality. Handling mistakes – Our beliefs about mistakes are crucial to whether we are likely to keep going or give up. The belief that mistakes mean failure prevents us from identifying missing pieces of information that provide important clues to the steps needed to get back on course. It also leads to discouragement. Denying or ignoring mistakes has the same

effect because it doesn’t allow the underlying problem to surface. Handling mistakes requires a learning mindset that sees mistakes and setbacks as an opportunity for learning, rather than cause for making a negative judgement about ourselves. Perseverance – Perseverance is about persisting through setbacks and failure. Research with children as young as one year old has shown that children take cues from adults about the value of persistence. As children observe how adults around them work toward goals and deal with difficulties, they make assumptions that form the basis of their own beliefs about the value of hard work and what is involved in reaching goals. In this way, parents can shape the assumptions that children have about what success means. This can prepare them to anticipate failures, setbacks and maintain followthrough. Other resilience skills – Tenacity works hand in hand with vision, composure and reasoning (see previous issues for information on these). In the face of setbacks, vision helps to motivate by reminding us of our goals. Composure helps us to calm our emotions. Reasoning helps us take a step back to reflect and identify any changes that need to be made. When used together, these skills help to maintain a sense of control and direction to keep moving forward.

LIVE YOUR LIST

Off the Beaten Track WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON - Live Your Bucket List

At the homestay Lyn in traditional dress doing the daily chores

After hearing so much about Machu Picchu – its history as an Incan 15th century citadel, in an incredible location in the Andes, with amazing architecture of sophisticated drystone walls, of fused huge blocks with no mortar, astounding astronomical alignments, perfect panoramic views and elusive mystery – like so many others, it was on Lyn Davys’ bucket list. In July 2013, the Lake Macquarie resident and her husband Gary set off on a 21-day Peru tour that included the four-day Quarry trail to Machu Picchu. The couple thought Machu Picchu was to be the highlight of the trip. However, that was not the case. “Boy were we in for a surprise. Machu Picchu was awesome. Though it was the people, desert, Nazca Lines, condors, chullpas and floating islands that made the greatest impression, maybe because they were unexpected,” Lynn said. The Peruvian people, in the cities and villages, captured the couple’s hearts with their hospitality and welcoming ways. “They were beautiful, accommodating and there was a lot of laughter on both sides as we communicated quite well with terrible charades. “I loved the homestay where I wore traditional dress, sorted the lima beans, played ball with the kids then peeled the potatoes for dinner.” The couple found the desert in southern Peru to be extraordinary. “It is one of the world’s driest deserts, driving through it we saw villages where houses are built with no roofs because on average it rains for 10 minutes, once a year. They also saw huge dunes and tried their hand at sand boarding and decided it was a fun way to experience the extreme climate. This desert is also home to the spectacular Nazca lines with its 26 giant-scale figures, straight lines, symbols, birds and beasts scattered across 1000 square kilometres, which

the couple viewed from the nearby hilltops and the air. Also in South Peru, they visited Colca Canyon that is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon with the hope to see a giant Andean Condor, and to their amazement, they had a close and personal encounter with one of the world’s largest birds. “We walked off the beaten track to watch them shooting the breeze away from the crowds. We were rewarded with one taking a rest near where we were standing”. Other highlights included the ruined 'chullpas' (funeral towers) of Sillustani, built by a pre-Inca civilisation and the floating islands of Lake Titicaca constructed from totora reeds by the Uros people to isolate themselves from rival tribes in ancient times. “All these extras were fantastic and made it a very memorable trip.” They have many ticks on their bucket list including a trek to view Mount Everest; visiting Asia, Pacific Islands and Europe; several road Australian road trips (21 days in Tasmania and 14 days from NSW coast to outback return) a half marathon in Sydney; and park runs across NSW and Melbourne. Lyn has a very special and personal one that is a familymatriarchal tick. She has climbed The Rock Hill in Wagga as part of a family tradition. “My grandmother did it when she was 70, so did my mum, then last year it was my turn. I am so glad I did it!” Next on the duo’s bucket list is a trip to Vietnam, hopefully in 2019. Kim-Cherie Davidson is an adventure coach and speaker. She helps women to live their adventure dreams. To start now – write a list, tick off the activities and celebrate. So they can feel empowered, grow from their experiences and be role models for their families, friends and other women. Give Your Kids an Amazing Adventure…

With Ice Hockey! For Newcastle’s Amelia Matheson ice hockey isn’t just a sport – it’s her life. The 32-year-old has spent the past two decades on skates after falling in love with ice hockey as a 12-year-old. Since then the Newcastle woman has travelled the world and made a name for herself as a member of the Australian women’s ice hockey team, as well as the captain of the Sydney Sirens in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League. The defensive player credits her lifelong love of the game and the wonderful experiences it has given her, to her first fledgeling efforts on the ice at the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in Warners Bay. “My hockey career actually began on rollerblades, as a 12-year-old girl wanting to be a part of an extreme sport,” Matheson said. “Dancing just didn’t cut it. Our local inline rink ended up shutting down, and two years before that the (Warners Bay) ice rink had opened, but I was so dedicated to inline hockey I didn’t dare give it a go... until I had no choice, because I needed hockey in my life. “But it was a choice that was meant to be. That moment when I began playing ice hockey I knew this was my forever sport. I thought inline was great, but turns out ice hockey was greater! “I’ve had an amazing adventure growing up in this sport, being pushed as a player and coach and pushing myself to my limits earning positions on local representative teams, NSW state teams, the AWIHL Sydney Sirens team and the Australian National Women’s Team, which have taken me all over the country and world including places like Finland, Canada, South Korea, Czech Republic and more. “I’m so grateful for the opportunities I have gained throughout my journey. Hockey is more than just a sport. It’s my way of life.” With its world-renowned beaches and temperate winter climate, ice hockey isn’t exactly the first sport of choice you’d associate with Newcastle. 32 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

But growing numbers of both children and adults are choosing to spend their spare time inside the icy surrounds of the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium at Warners Bay, where both learn to play programs and competitions for all ages are on offer. The stadium is also the home rink of the incredibly successful Newcastle Northstars men’s team, which has won the Australian Ice Hockey League’s coveted Goodall Cup a record six times during their 15 seasons in the national competition, including back-to-back championships in 2005/2006 and again in 2015/2016. The Northstars are littered with homegrown products, including local junior Mathew Lindsay, a star defenceman who is a regular member of the Australian Men’s national team, the MightyRoos. Like Matheson, Lindsay also started off as an inline hockey player before making the switch to the ice-based version when he was 10. A regular in state-level teams from the start, Lindsay made his first Australian representative side in 2008 and the following year joined the Northstars men’s team, aged 19. “Ice hockey in Australia gives players an incredible opportunity to excel and play on the world stage and at the highest levels,” he said. “I have competed and trained all over the world, and it all started right here in Newcastle.” With such a successful team within Newcastle’s midst, it is little wonder junior numbers at the rink are stronger than ever. While at the highest level the sport may be known, among other things, for its intense speed and crunching on-ice clashes, ice hockey actually begins as a non-contact game. Knowing how to get started in ice hockey may be one of the biggest barriers for new players, but Hunter Ice Skating Stadium and the Northstars Academy (NSA) are hoping to remove that obstacle and let people experience the fun firsthand with some free “Try Hockey” nights this month.

NSA is made up of Newcastle Northstars players past and present who are passionate about growing the game and giving back to the ice hockey community. Their accredited coaches run development clinics, hockey camps and the inhouse ice hockey competitions at the rink. At the “Try Hockey” nights both children and adults will have a chance to try ice hockey first hand during free one-hour sessions with the NSA coaches. Participants will be given skates, basic protective equipment including a helmet and pads, and one of the elongated ice hockey sticks they’ll need to get their first taste of handling a puck. While no prior ice hockey experience is necessary, potential players should at least be able to skate unaided. Should the one-hour sessions leave participants with a yearning for more, they can then enrol in the regular Monday night ice hockey development sessions, which are held at the rink in conjunction with school terms. Players are grouped into age and ability levels and start with the basics like stick handling, stopping and skating backwards. Once competent, players can progress to more advanced techniques such as shooting the puck and simulated game situations. When a player is considered ready for competition they can join a team in the local league, which has four divisions from beginner to expert. Aspiring younger players under the age of 11 can also get involved in the “Youngstars” program, which is focused on instilling the foundations of hockey, teamwork and sportsmanship in a fun environment. The Youngstars train and play in competitions locally, and a selected team competes in state and interstate competitions throughout the year. For a lot of players, the fun and social element of the inhouse competitions will be excitement enough. But for players looking to further their ice hockey careers, there are a number of pathways. Newcastle has strong representative teams in all divisions from “PeeWee” under 14’s level right through to seniors, as well as in the women’s leagues, East Coast Super League and the Australian Ice Hockey League. Those good enough could even dream of a future in the prestigious North American competition, the NHL, following in the skates of Sydney junior Nathan Walker, who recently became the first Australian-born player in the NHL as a member of the 2018 Stanley Cup championship-winning Washington Capitals team.

For more information about competitions or learn to play programs visit www.hiss.com.au, or head over to the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on October 14 or 15 for the free “Try Hockey” sessions.

Are You Okay? WORDS JASPER HOLMES - Membership Consultant Planet Fitness Lambton

Australians recently marked ‘R U OK? Day’ as the national day of action held in September each year, aimed at encouraging people to start a meaningful conversation in an attempt to help those who may be struggling with their mental health. While it’s important to shine the spotlight on this issue annually, at Planet Fitness, we believe that any day is a chance to start exercising and not only bettering your physical self but in particular your mental health. For decades researchers have studied and shared their findings about physical exercise and a healthy diet, linking both to overall physical wellbeing. As research develops, the links between physical activity and mental health grow stronger, with the common belief that with a healthy body, comes a healthy mind. With mental illness’ affecting 4,000,000 Australians, and with eight Australians taking their own lives every day, the issue of Australia’s mental health status is something that needs to be of a focal point for not only the government but also at an intrapersonal level. This can all be started by learning the benefits of healthy living on the brain and mind, and then putting it into practice. When looking at past research about physical exercise and psychological health, it is important to look at the

individual, their lifestyle, and implementing a health plan that targets not only their fitness and skill level but something that caters for their personal needs. For instance, say you are an individual who is just beginning to exercise or are elderly then low-intensity activities such as walking, swimming, and bike riding will provide important psychological benefits, as well supporting ageing, reducing coronary heart disease, improving functional loss, and increasing overall life expectancy. Due to the cross morbidity of some physical illness with mental health problems, the inclusion of physical exercise might also be a means to minimise the symptoms of the original physical health problem. One study looked at 3,403 participants both male and female (aged between 25-64), who had completed a risk factor survey, along with an “exercise habits and perceived health” questionnaire. The results of the study suggested that if you exercise at least two to three times a week for a minimum of an hour, you are more likely to experience significantly less depressive symptoms, anger, and stress than those who are exercising less or not at all. Furthermore, the individuals who did exercise acknowledged that they had higher levels of coherence, and a stronger feeling of social integration, along with overall higher confidence in self and self-perception. This feeling of joining a community is a driving force behind combatting mental health in all areas, due to this feeling of self-worth and purpose, by surrounding yourself with people with a common goal, and helping motivate each other to live longer healthier and overall more positive lives. This includes the possibility of alcoholism and substance abuse in individuals who experience anxiety or depression, and use such substances as a means of dealing with the psychosocial disorder. Further studies have been conducted to see if there are improvements in substance abuse when regular exercise routines are introduced into individual’s lives. In one particular study, 58 male and females with alcohol abuse problems, participated in a fitness program for three months. Results showed that after the three-month program there was a significant improvement in abstinence when compared with control groups. So as a nation what are we doing? There are so many actions that we can do to improve those statistics, and re-shape mental health to a positive outcome. If we target this as a community, ask each other on a daily basis ‘are you okay?’, and then focus on both the intrapersonal and interpersonal level of our mental health, by incorporating healthy living into our lives, then positivity and uplifted mindset is just the beginning of a better future.

NAVIGATING TEENAGE SKINCARE at The Mayah Clinic During the teenage years with hormonal changes, skin can become prone to acne. It might become oily; blackheads can appear, whiteheads and even cysts. The good news is that the sooner you can manage these changes the better. Not only will skin feel and look better, but the risk of scarring and marks from acne will be reduced. Of course, there are treatments for acne scarring, but prevention is always the best goal. Unfortunately, some chemist and supermarket acne treatment products can be drying for skin, and may not really be effective enough. Skin is the largest organ of the body. It is affected by lifestyle, the food we eat as well as hormones, and how we care for our skin itself. Because they are passionate about skin wellness at The Mayah Clinic, they are running small group Teenage Skin Schools during the October school holidays. In these Teenage Skin School sessions, small groups will be taken through an hour long, hands-on program to learn about skin! Dermal therapist Jasmine, and beauty/skin therapist Brodie are experienced in managing acne and will go through: • Acne triggers • Effective skin care and how products work • Simple, effective skin care regime - demonstrating how to cleanse, exfoliate, mask and moisturise • Treatments available. • Diet and how our gut function affects our skin. Attendees will be provided with an information pack, three homecare products and a voucher towards a deep cleansing facial and LED light treatment. The Skin Schools will run on 3 October and 10 October, and the cost is $99 pp. Bookings need to be made by calling The Mayah Clinic on 4954 5044. At The Mayah Clinic, a consultation can be made with Dr Holmes if required for medical management of moderate to severe acne.

The first time I fell in love was especially dramatic, your classic Romeo and Juliet story. At the age of 5, I announced to my mother that my kindergarten classmate Toby and I were moving in together. I wasn’t asking her permission, just making her aware of my plans. Toby lived two blocks away, so I packed my Barbie school bag and headed out to the sidewalk, but having not long ago moved into town from a farm, I was too scared to cross the street on my own. Returning to the house, I flung myself on my bed in a manner which would have put Liz Taylor to shame, and said to my mother, "This isn’t over you know." The pattern begins to take shape. My next great love was (and still is) gorgeous, smart, funny and talented. He also had his own hit TV show, which seemed important at the time – I was 11. My mother was a smart and caring woman, who had learned how to deal with her temperamental daughter. She gently explained to me that given I was already 5’9'' – and wasn’t done growing - and the charismatic star of Family Ties, Michael J Fox, was 5’4'', we might look a little odd at the school dance. I was convinced my mother was wrong. Little things like height, geography or the fact that the current love of my life was 26 and could be arrested for even glancing in my direction wasn't going to stand in my way, so I would wait. After wearing out the tape on my copy of the classic 80's movie Some Kind of

Wonderful, I made a classic teenage mistake – I fell in love with my best friend. ‘Love’ might be overstating it, as I’m not sure you can be in love all on your own, but dammit I gave it a good old try. It wasn’t like in the movies - our version was going to second base in my hammock. He taught me a lot in our time together. If a guy says, "Gee, the weather is nice today," what he means is I’m going to make out with all of your friends and everyone is going to know about it but you. So that was handy. This seems a convenient time to mention that I had now officially become a cliché. I was an only child, with no father to speak of, and a failed relationship under my belt. The pattern was formed - therapists of the world were rubbing their hands together. The rest of my teens and my 20’s for that matter were a blur of incredibly bad choices. A series of long-term relationships with either decent guys who just 'weren’t for me', amazing guys who were just as damaged as I was (in their own way) or guys with the moral compass of a pirate on crack. All lasted longer than they had any right to because as soon as there was any sign of trouble, I would morph into my favourite cartoon character, co-dependant cheerleader, a people pleaser with abandonment issues. Unlike the John Hughes films I watched with my friends as a teenager, it didn’t sort ►

itself out neatly in 90 minutes - the pattern I had worked so hard putting together without realising it, came undone stitch by stitch over a particularly bad year. And many years on, with a gorgeous child, a thriving business and a healthy relationship, I often wonder what I would say to my 14-year-old self. Mostly, I wonder if the stubborn little drama queen would listen. But if my former love Michael J Fox showed up at my house with Christopher Lloyd and the DeLorean, heading back to 1987 would be tempting.

How To Protect Your Vulnerability As you Get Older WORDS MARGO McALARY LLB - Solicitor, Merewether Legal Chambers You would have to be hiding your head in the sand not to be aware of or trying to ignore, the serious problems concerning aged care being reported in the media, thinking it won’t happen to you. It is a stark reality that getting older often places us in a vulnerable position. We would like to trust our family members to take care of us and do what is in our best interests however that is not always the case, unfortunately, especially when there is money involved. Such situations are referred to “Elder Abuse”.

As for what I’d say, it would go something like this: “Don’t spend the next 15 years thinking that your happiness is less important than everyone else’s, that having a boyfriend is nowhere near as important as having a life and leaving a guy who is a jerk or even a nice guy who just isn’t right for you isn’t giving up or failing, it’s moving forward. Oh, and I know bubble skirts are in fashion at the moment, but they look ridiculous on you. You’ll regret it when you look back at photos 20 years from now - trust me, I’m from the future.” ■

That is why particular attention needs to be given to appointing suitable Powers of Attorney who will look after your financial and legal affairs if you lose the capacity to make such decisions and Enduring Guardians who will make decisions about your health and where you live if you lose the capacity to look after yourself. It is also very important to appoint Executors of your Will who know you well, who understand what you want to do with your estate after you pass away and will administer your estate in accordance with your wishes. Often when asked questions about the Will maker’s family situation, what seemed to be a simple matter to the Will maker is identified as potentially resulting in a Will being able to be challenged in Court by someone who considers that they have not been provided for, or not been provided for adequately, in your Will. As with most things in life, prevention is better than cure. It is well worth investing in your future security by the protection that you can achieve with properly drafted legal documents to control what happens to you before losing the mental capacity to do so. It is difficult to advise someone that they cannot make a Will or change their Will, nor appoint a Power of Attorney or Enduring Guardian because a Medical Practitioner has provided a certificate to say they have lost their mental capacity. Any documents prepared after a person has lost capacity would not have legal force and effect. The overwhelming response by people who have put such documents in place is: “It’s such a relief to get that done. I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner.” For more information visit www.merewetherlegalchambers.com.au

CORE BELIEFS, Culture and Respect Key to Exceptional Service When it comes to money matters, the one common goal most people share is the pursuit of financial peace of mind. And that’s exactly what Newcastle-based accountancy and business advisory firm DFK Crosbie has been focused on providing for the past 53 years. Founded in Mayfield in 1965, the company split itself across three locations after their original office suffered extensive damage during the Newcastle earthquake of 1989. Around 25 years ago the company was reunited under the one roof at Warabrook, spending the next few decades consolidating and growing its business to become one of the largest regional accountancy firms in Australia. The business now has offices servicing clients in Newcastle, Sydney and the Gold Coast, with around 101 fulltime equivalent staff. Those staff will have even more room to

move (and grow further) in 2019, with the company planning to take up one-and-a-half floors of the new Gateway building currently under construction in Newcastle West. Among those who have been there for much of that growth is DFK Crosbie Partner Kirsty Porteous, who last month celebrated her 25th anniversary with the company. She believes the success of the company comes down to its core belief, its culture and the respect it has earned in key markets. “DFK Crosbie is a business service and advisory firm. Our main goal is to provide peace of mind to our clients by helping them through whatever they need help within their business and tax affairs,” she said. “It's about making sure that they don't have to worry about their business. It's about making sure they don't need to worry

“And it’s also about knowing that they can depend on us for advice and to make sure that things are looked after so that they’re not having to worry. “We’re one of the largest regional accounting firms in Australia, and I believe that success comes down to probably two things. “One is a couple of the niche markets that we've established, we have a specialist skillset in the hospitality industry, so we do a lot of clubs and pubs and not-for-profits, and so we're known particularly well in that industry. “The other is, I think, just the way that we approach our work. We genuinely care about our clients, and we like to be involved. We form really close bonds with our clients so that we can actually help them with all aspects of their life, because it's not just about business and it's not just about making business decisions, it’s about how it impacts them quite holistically.” Aside from working with businesses in the hospitality and not-for-profit sector, DFK Crosbie also specialises in providing business advice across a range of other industries and markets including health services, self-managed superannuation funds, wealth management and business finance. Their services include everything from the preparation of financial statements and business activity statements to business advisory and due diligence on business acquisitions or assistance with the sale of businesses, as well as audit and assurance services. Kristy believes it is vital for businesses to seek outside advice in order to ensure they are in the best financial position possible. “I think it's critical,” she said. “There are so many moving targets in all aspects of business, there are legislation changes, there are compliance changes, there are so many different moving parts, and I think if they didn't get outside of their own business, they'd certainly be lost in it. I think it’s important that they reach out, not only to us as business advisors, but reach out to their business networks. “You don't know what you don’t know. So if you're just confined in your own business and not reaching out to all of those different advisors and networks, then it’s quite scary what you could be oblivious to.” ►

DFK Crosbie is also focussed on reaching out, not just to new or existing clients, but to the communities in which they operate. The company has a strong track record of community involvement and charity work, supporting everything from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Ronald McDonald House and the Hunter Medical Research Institute to Newcastle Civic Theatre and Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast, among a long list of others. “We have a really heavy community involvement, at the moment, for example, we're one of the main sponsors of Charlie’s Run 4 Kids, and we’re the main sponsor of

Where There’s a Will... There’s a Way WORDS SALLY DAVIES - Senior Associate, Jenkins Legal

It has recently come to light that Aretha Franklin died without a will, and her family is now embroiled in court proceedings over her assets. Her estate will be particularly complex due to ongoing earnings from song royalties, making it virtually impossible for the court to estimate the long-term value of the estate when determining an appropriate distribution. If Ms Franklin had a valid will, there’d

Obviously it feels good, and I guess we feel a level of corporate responsibility as well. “It's a good opportunity to engage with the community, to engage in areas of the community that we might not otherwise get to have involvement with, and it's also a way of engaging our staff and getting them involved as well.” ■

be a faster, and cheaper, resolution of her estate. Ms Franklin would have been able to state whom she wanted to have control of, and benefit from, her estate. In Michigan, the law provides that if an unmarried person with children dies without a will, the assets are to be equally divided between those children. Under this law, Ms Franklin’s estate would pass to her four children, which may not be an accurate reflection of her wishes, particularly since she also had a partner whom she may have wanted to benefit. NSW has an equivalent law in place, called the “Succession Act”. This Act defines who will inherit your assets if you die without a will (called dying “intestate”) depending on your family structure. For example, if someone dies leaving a spouse and children from that relationship, the spouse receives the whole estate. If there is a spouse and a child from a previous relationship, the spouse receives the deceased’s personal effects, a $350,000 legacy (CPI indexed) and 50% of the remainder of the estate, while the children equally share the remaining 50% of the estate. As you can see, by not having a will, the state decides who your assets are distributed to, which may not be an accurate reflection of your wishes. Prioritise your estate planning and avoid lengthy delays, expense and confusion over who is to receive your assets. Your Guide to NYC with JTW

WORDS MICHELLE BARKER - Jayes Travel

It’s easy to see why people fall in love with the ‘Big Apple’; it’s a oneof-a-kind destination that pulses with life and buzzes with excitement. With something happening around every corner, it’s no wonder they call it the city that never sleeps! Not planning your time in New York can leave you in a big swirl of chaos.

Here are Jayes Travel’s top tips are for the Big Apple: • Purchase a “Skip The Line Pass” to beat the crowds and save money. The ultimate sightseeing pass. Get free admission to over 100 attractions, tours, museums, and more including the Empire State Building, 9/11 Museum, Top of the Rock, and more. Choose the duration that best fits your visit, then put your wallet away and enjoy entry to as many attractions as you wish to visit. Passes are available for one, two, three, five, seven or ten days. Our favourite activities are the incredible walking tours, where you will get a local feeling to the city. • Have a cocktail at a rooftop bar and take in the views. The Knickerbocker is one of our favourites; With its three plush corner Sky Pods overlooking Times Square, stylish indoor and outdoor seating options and lush living walls of greenery, the St. Cloud at the Knickerbocker is the ultimate rooftop bar in NYC. There are hundreds of rooftop venues in New York, and it’s the perfect way to watch the sunset over the city after a full day of sightseeing • Buy a metro card when you first arrive. The metro is one of the easiest ways to get around the city, but at peak hour the lines can be long for a ticket. Purchase a metro card with higher credit, and you will be zipping in and out of the metro like a local, avoiding the ticket queues. • Have a slice of a famous New York pizza. Neighbourhood pizzerias are the backbone of New York City’s cuisine — easily as important

as hot dog carts, Chinese-American carry-outs, soul food cafes, and pastrami sandwiches in defining the city’s historic culinary landscape. Take a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Williamsburg, where you will find some of the famous slices of New York Pizza • Explore Central Park from a pedicab. One of the world’s most renowned green spaces, Central Park comprises 843 acres of rolling meadows, boulder-studded outcroppings, elm-lined walkways, manicured European-style gardens, a lake and reservoir — not to mention an outdoor theatre, a memorial to John Lennon, an idyllic waterside eatery (the Loeb Boathouse) and a famous statue of Alice in Wonderland. To make the most of your time, jump in a pedicab to explore more of the park and also get some great fun facts from your driver. • See the Statue of Liberty from the water. Instead of waiting in long lines to get to Ellis Island, why not jump on a New York Water Taxi. With it’s iconic yellow and black colouring, the New York Water Taxi will transport you from Brooklyn back to Manhattan. On the way, circle Ellis Island and get the perfect snap of the Statue of Liberty.

A New Year you’ll Never Forget! NEW YEAR’S EVE SYDNEY HARBOUR | MONDAY 31ST DECEMBER 2018 Enjoy New Year’s Eve this year floating on Sydney Harbour on board M.V. Zarapito. A bit of HonkyTonk and a Whole Lot of Rock N Roll! WORDS CHELSEA BADGER - Jayes Travel

Jayes Travel is taking a small group of 16 ladies to the USA going from New York to New Orleans in mid-October, and they want YOU to join them on their incredible journey! Michelle Barker, Managing Director of Jayes Travel, will be hosting the Jayes Travel Women (JTW) group and what better place to start the adventures through the USA than New York City! Spend six nights in the city that never sleeps, simply unpack your bags and immerse yourself in the bright lights of the Big Apple! From there it’s time to set your watch to the slow, sultry drawl of America’s Deep South – as they sojourn from Savannah’s magnolia blossomed avenues to the jaunty cobblestone streets of Charleston – stately homes, lush plantations and some good ol’ Southern hospitality are yours to discover! Then it’s time for a little honky-tonk, home-cookin' and a whole lot of Rock N Roll as the group take a lyrical pilgrimage from Nashville to Memphis and The Big Easy. The group will attend the Grand Ole Opry dedicated to honouring country music’s rich history and dynamic present. Go behind the scenes, walk in the footstep of country music’s superstars and get an exclusive look at what happens behind the scenes.

Learn more about the history of country music with visits to the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Johnny Cash Museum and the Ryman Auditorium. The throb of blues guitar on Beale St and Barbecue connoisseurs descend to stuff themselves silly on smoky pulled pork and dry-rubbed ribs…and of course Elvis fanatics fly in to worship at the altar of the King at Graceland! The trip then ends in New Orleans where Jayes Travel Women will walk through and see decorative artwork embellishing the tombs. “Only in New Orleans, which is unique in so many ways, could cemeteries be major tourist attractions!” Take a steamboat Natchez jazz cruise, explore the Backstreet Cultural Museum where you will find an amazing assortment of Mardi Gras, Jazz Funerals and other traditions. Shop at the French Markets and meet the 'Voodoo Bone Lady' - over 30 years of experience helping curious,

confused and grieving souls to claim the love, happiness, prosperity, success, and well-being that is our divine right. “You won’t find these destinations combined in one convenient tour with any other operator, especially at the standard and size our tour groups are. We are currently the only touring company advertising an itinerary like this!” says Michelle. The Jayes Travel Women program gives you the convenience of time, security and guidance. Their style of touring includes return transfers from your home address in the Newcastle/Hunter region, includes all your airfares and taxes from Sydney, at least 2 meals a day, 4 star and above accommodation, all sightseeing listed in the itinerary, your ESTA visa, a local guide throughout as well as a Jayes Travel representative and all of your tipping! “Tipping, especially in the USA can be a bit of a nightmare as it is so foreign to us. Throughout the day, you would pay tips for your bags being carried to your room, transfer drivers, meals and drinks, tour guides and more, which could potentially leave you out of pocket $50 a day – and this does add up! Having tipping already pre-included in our Jayes Travel Women’s tours puts you more at ease and less reaching into your pocket unexpectedly,” said Michelle. “With our tours, we also have many touring inclusions! As well as those listed above, in New York City we have also included a live gospel choir performance, a charming horsedrawn carriage through Central Park, visits to historic sites and a Broadway show! On most tours, these would be optional activities, which you would have to pay extra for,” she added. There is only limited time to secure your place on Jayes Travel Women’s tour to The USA From New York to New Orleans as places will fill up! Request a brochure from Jayes Travel today to view the detailed 27-day itinerary!

Sit back and Relax…

We’ve Got you Covered!

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer

The balmy spring weather is here, and the kids are keen to get amongst it with two whole weeks of school holidays stretching out in front of them. But while it may not quite be beach weather yet, there’s plenty of free and affordable ways to keep them happy these holidays thanks to a great program of activities from The City of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie City Council.

Newcastle Region Libraries The October school holidays are all about celebrating pets at the region’s network of libraries. From pet-themed movie screenings and craft sessions to a Lego building competition inspired by your furry or feathered best friend, there is a whole range of fun activities paying homage to all creatures great and small. Meet a guide dog and find out how her assistance has changed the life of her vision impaired owner during free sessions at Mayfield (October 3) and Adamstown (October 10) libraries, or listen to tips from a council Ranger on what you 42 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

need to do to be a responsible pet owner (October 2, 10 and 11 at Hamilton, Mayfield and New Lambton respectively). Be amazed by the animal-themed magic performed by award-winning magician Joel Howlett on October 12 at Newcastle and Wallsend libraries ($8 per person) or learn the fundamentals of electronics to create a working game buzzer you can use to compete in a fun pet quiz, with sessions at New Lambton (October 3), Newcastle (October 4) and Wallsend (October 11). Younger children will be swept up in pet-themed story time sessions including a celebration of 35 years of everyone’s favourite cheeky black dog, Hairy Maclary, while teenagers can indulge in Halloween focused fun with Zombie origami on October 10 and 12 at Newcastle and Wallsend libraries. Bookings for all activities are essential. Check out www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/library/whats-on to find out what’s on near you.

Newcastle Museum Everyone loves to experiment, and there’s no better place to tap into your scientific side than at Newcastle Museum’s free Science Shows, where you will enter the scientific world of the deep ocean. Find out why it is so cold at the bottom of the ocean, why the blobfish looks so unhappy and how the barreleye fish can see through its own head with a range of science facts and demonstrations to amaze and delight. The popular shows are sure to fill up fast, with three sessions every day on October 2, 4, 9 and 11.

But that’s not the only entertainment on offer at the museum these holidays, with a special What Lurks Below workshop ($10 per person) exploring the weird and wonderful animals that live in the deeper parts of the ocean, while the special interactive undersea exhibition Voyage to the Deep (prices vary) based on Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is still on until October 21. The museum is open every day of the school holidays from 10am to 5pm, visit www.newcastlemuseum.com.au for more details.

Newcastle Art Gallery A trip to the art gallery will be about more than just admiring the artworks these holidays with a series of hands-on workshops on offer. Create your own illustrated storybook ($10 per person) or use paint pens and pastels to create an impressive portrait on canvas ($10), inspired by the wonderful work of the 2018 Kilgour Prize artists. Bookings are essential for the workshops. For more details visit www.nag.org.au

Newcastle’s Natural Connection The council’s annual water bug survey is on again, giving children the chance to become a water bug detective and discover the fascinating life living in their local waterways. Sessions will be held at Rankin Park, Blackbird Reserve, Warabrook Wetlands, Adamstown Heights, Hasluck Drive Reserve, Aries Way Reserve, at the end of Claremont Park, Adamstown Heights and Richley Reserve from October 7-10 and 16. More details can be found online at www.newcastle. nsw.gov.au/Living/Environment/Environmental-Education/ Natural-Connection

Lake Macquarie Libraries Whether you want to learn how to fold the best paper plane or create the most gorgeous floating lantern, there will be something for every child at Lake Macquarie’s libraries these holidays. Learn more about aerodynamics at the Fold and Fly Paper Planes workshop at Morisset Library on October 3 or feel the mindful, happy vibes when you join illustrator Kirrili Lonergan as she reads Ollie’s Treasure at Speers Point Library on October 4. Charlestown Library will host a lantern making workshop on October 4, crafting magical creations to float down the Hunter River as part of the Riverlights Multicultural Festival in Maitland, while muggles keen to make their own unique wand should fly down to Speers Point Library on October 11 for the fun, free craft session. There will be plenty more activities on offer across the two weeks, visit www.library.lakemac.com.au/kids/schoolholiday-fun for details and to book your place. ►
