Con tan solo 19 años, Osmar Olvera hizo eco del himno de México en Doha, Qatar.
México mostró una vez más su destreza en clavados, con la actuación estelar de Osmar Olvera asegurando el oro en el Campeonato Mundial de Natación en Doha, Qatar.
Con un notable puntaje de 431.75 en el trampolín de 1 metro, el atleta mexicano superó a el australiano Li Shixin quien obtuvo medalla de plata con un puntaje de 395.70 y al clavadista británico Haslam, quien obtuvo medalla de bronce con un puntaje de 393.10.
Paola Espinosa es la única campeona mundial mexicana de clavados, y obtuvo el oro en la plataforma de 10 metros en Roma en 2009.
Los impecables clavados de Olvera subrayaron su desempeño excepcional en el evento de trampolín.
Nacido el 5 de junio de 2004, Osmar Olvera Ibarra se embarcó en su viaje de clavados en 2017 en la Serie Mundial de Saltos FINA en Kazán, Rusia, donde terminó quinto en clavados sincronizados masculinos desde la plataforma de 10 metros. En ese momento sólo tenía 12 años. Tres años después, compitió una vez más en la serie, esta vez
en Montreal, Canadá, consiguiendo el tercer lugar junto a Dolores Hernández en la prueba de clavados sincronizados mixtos desde el trampolín de 3 metros.

El sábado 10 de febrero se celebró la fiesta “Love the River” en el Mercado on Fifth junto con Renew Moline. Iowa City, IA – El viernes 2 de febrero en el histórico Teatro Englert en el centro de Iowa City, el Mariachi Herencia de México trajo su nueva generación del sonido clásico del Mariachi al sureste de Iowa. La velada mostró su sonido único que les ha valido elogios, incluida una nominación al Grammy Latino por su más reciente álbum Herederos.
La música de mariachi tiene sus raíces en el estado mexicano de Guadalajara y la Ciudad de México. Ha llegado a definir una pieza única y querida de la cultura mexicana que ha demostrado ser popular en todo el mundo. Iowa City, IA – On Friday, February 2nd, at the historic Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City Mariachi Herencia de Mexico brought their new generation of the classic sound of Mariachi to Southeast Iowa. The evening showcased their unique sound that has brought them acclaim, including a Latin Grammy nomination for their latest album Herederos.
Mariachi music has its roots in the Mexican state of Guadalajara and Mexico City. It has come to define a unique, beloved piece of Mexican culture that has proven to be popular all over the globe. The Hispanic artists from this Chicago-based group’s love for Mariachi was showcased for all to see, feel and hear that evening. Their mastery of their instruments and dedication to their craft echoed deep throughout the historic theater and brought the audience to their feet many times as the crowd often sang along. The 13-piece band consists of five violins, three trumpets,
three guitars (including the Mexican vihuela), one bass, and one harp, with many of the band taking turns singing. This provided a variety of sounds and perspectives for the over ninety minute show. They performed non-stop and their stamina as artists was an impressive feat.
The stop in Iowa City was part of a 42 city tour Mariachi Herencia De Mexico | The Herederos Tour for the group that takes them all over the U.S. from New York to California, Texas, New Mexico and throughout the Midwest. Besides their Latin Grammy nominations, the group has performed on Univision and with many renowned Mexican artists, including Aida Cuevas. In 2021 they were invited to the Whitehouse for President Joe Biden’s official holiday event where they performed ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ with singer Camila Cabello.
Some of the group are from Mexico but now make their home in the long-standing immigrant gateway city of Chicago. Several of the young musicians were born in the Chicago area surrounded by their Mexican culture. It was
only fitting that the concert featured Mexican classics such as “Cucurrucucu Paloma”, The Juan Gabriel and Rocio Durcal hit “Asi Son los Hombres” all the way to a Frank Sinatra cover.
The singers spoke in English and Spanish to welcome their audience in between songs and highlight their band members’ occasional instrument solos. The dazzling background of the show proved to be a wonderful accompaniment to the classic outfits and beautiful sombreros the band wore.
The group markets themselves as a new bicultural generation of 14 musicians ages 18-32. You could see and hear the craft and tradition of Mariachi being carried on from one generation and country to another.

There’s an inner drive somewhere in Quad-Cities’ boxer and Rock Island native Vershaun Lee. You can see it when he trains, jumping rope for several rounds, his feet touching the floor in a steady rhythm.
He hits the mitts with authority or with moderate punches, depending on what he is working on, what combination he might want to try on a given gym workout or before a fight.
Lee, 23, a decorated amateur with over 300 bouts, including the 2021 National Golden Gloves title and runner up in the U.S. Olympic Trials for the 2024 Olympics in France, made his successful professional debut on Saturday, Feb. 10, with a second-round knockout of Terree’on Hammond at the Davenport River Center.
Lee has been boxing since he was five years old. His uncle Ramsey Vesey Sr., of Rock Island, has been working with him since he was a kid in neighborhood backyards, taking him and other kids in his Chevy Blazer to tournaments through the years, not really
knowing where this was going to end, all these kids and all these fights in towns big and small.
“He’s been there from the beginning,” Lee says after a recent workout at the Rock Island Boxing Club in downtown Rock Island, where Vesey Sr. is head coach. “He sacrificed a lot taking us to tournaments. First, it started out as just learning to protect ourselves.”
Lee went from a little boy, traveling, winning boxing shows, to now training with professional fighters at their training camps, giving as good as he gets, a tall, rangy boxerpuncher at junior welterweight and welterweight. Anywhere from 140 lbs. to 147 lbs., he feels comfortable.
His ultimate goal is to become a world champion.
“This was never in the picture at first,” Lee says, referring to his professional status. “We saw that we were good.”
Lee is unwrapping his hands, the wraps and bandages and tape coming off like casts that protect his livelihood.
The gym has noise, boxing noise. A timer buzzing when a round is over.
Bags and mitts are being hit. There are exercise drills – boys and girls of varying ages on this night working out. Vesey Sr. runs the show, but readily admits without the help of assistant coaches, it would be a difficult task, especially as he works a full-time job as well.
He commands respect without intimidation. He is honest with his fighters, no matter their age or ability.
His son, Ramsey Vesey Jr., 23, a winner of the Chicago Golden Gloves, is also working out on a heavy bag on this night. He is planning to turn pro later this year. Vesey Sr. is managing both young men.
“I just want them to be young men that believe in something,” Vesey Sr. says. “Something that you love doing, being successful, and taking care of your family.”
He expresses a cautious optimism. He understands boxing is lined with the obvious dangers inherent in the sport as well as the business side of the sport.
“I don’t want him to sign to a management company that clearly doesn’t have his best interests,” he says. “I don’t want him to be another number, somebody to capitalize on and then build him up and sell him to the highest bidder, then maybe take a cut out of that.
“His (Lee’s) mindset is to train and box, but I want him to know about the rest. I want him to be successful.”
One of the ways Vesey Sr. is helping to build success is by taking on long-time QuadCities boxing and mixed martial-arts coach Jeff Perez, founder of the Alley Cat Boxing Club in Moline. Perez has worked the corner with some of Vesey Sr.’s fighters over the years, such as Lee and Vesey Jr.
Perez has trained hundreds of fighters himself, both professional and amateur. He is proud that he worked with UFC Hall of Famers Jens Pulver and Robbie Lawler, among others, and local successful professional boxers such as Limberth Ponce and Ted Muller. He enjoys his relationship with Lee, wrapping his hands, giving advice sometimes in the corner.
“I see a lot of talent,” Perez says. I’ve seen guys he’s sparred. One was going to defend his world title and Vershaun sparred with him (Jamel Herring). He did great against him.”
Perez says he works well with Vesey Sr. and Lee as a team. Perez hopes his work helps the young prospect in Lee.
“I don’t know what’s inside of him (Lee), but he’s not intimidated by nobody,” Perez says. “It’s a different ball game from amateurs to pros.”
Lee says there is no one thing in his arsenal that may stand out. He has an educated left jab and a quick right hand, among other weapons.
“There’s a little bit of everything,” he says. “We just have to be smart, and like chess and checkers, you have to be one step ahead.”
Lee is next scheduled to fight on March 13 in Plant City, Fla., against Luis Vega Sanchez on ProBox TV. For Lee, his journey as a professional boxer is just beginning, and he hopes it will take him to a world championship someday.
Moline, IL – The city of Moline is seeking more public input on ideas to improve the riverfront area downtown.
It held a Moline Riverfront “Love the River” Celebration on Saturday, February 10th at Mercado on Fifth with Renew Moline. The project team gave a presentation — covering the project background, community vision, and design concepts — followed by open house exercises and family-friendly activities including free professional Valentine’s-themed photos, a Valentine-inspired decorating station, and local sweet treats and refreshments.

This initiative — led by the city of Moline, Renew Moline, and a multidisciplinary planning team — will create a compelling vision and implementation plan for a re-imagined Moline riverfront. This planning and design process embraces community engagement, ecological resilience, improved health and wellness for all ages, with a focus on catalyzing future investment within Moline Centre and along the Mississippi River.
The project will include a series of events and surveys to ideate, refine concepts, and ensure the final plan reflects market realities with what the community wants to see along the riverfront.

Vershaun Lee, boxeador de los Quad Cities y oriundo de Rock Island, tiene un espíritu especial. Se puede ver cuando entrena, saltando a la cuerda durante varios asaltos, con los pies tocando el suelo a un ritmo constante.

Impone respeto sin intimidar. Es sincero con sus luchadores, independientemente de su edad o habilidad.
Su hijo, Ramsey Vesey Jr., de 23 años, ganador de los Guantes de Oro de Chicago, también se ejercita esta noche en un saco pesado. Tiene previsto convertirse en profesional este mismo año. Vesey padre dirige a ambos jóvenes.
“Sólo quiero que sean jóvenes que crean en algo”, dice Vesey padre. “Algo que les guste hacer, tener éxito y cuidar de su familia”.
Expresa un optimismo cauto. Entiende que el boxeo está rodeado de los peligros obvios inherentes al deporte, así como el lado empresarial del mismo.
“No quiero que firme con una empresa de gestión que claramente no tiene en cuenta sus mejores intereses”, dice. No quiero que se convierta en un número más, en alguien a quien sacar provecho para luego construirlo y venderlo al mejor postor, y luego quizás sacar tajada de ello”.
“Su mentalidad (la de Lee) es entrenar y boxear, pero quiero que conozca el resto. Quiero que tenga éxito”. Una de las formas en las que Vesey Sr. está ayudando a construir el éxito es contratando al veterano entrenador de boxeo y artes marciales mixtas de los Quad Cities Jeff Perez, fundador del Alley Cat Boxing Club de Moline. Pérez ha trabajado en la esquina con algunos de los boxeadores de Vesey padre a lo largo de los años, como Lee y Vesey Jr. Pérez ha entrenado él mismo a cientos de boxeadores, tanto profesionales como amateurs. Está orgulloso de haber trabajado con los miembros del Salón de la Fama de la UFC Jens Pulver y Robbie Lawler, entre otros, y con boxeadores profesionales locales de éxito como Limberth Ponce y Ted Muller.

“Veo mucho talento”, dice Pérez. He visto a tipos con los que ha hecho de sparring. Uno iba a defender su título mundial y Vershaun hizo de sparring con él (Jamel Herring). Lo hizo muy bien contra él”.
Pérez dice que trabaja bien en equipo con Vesey Sr. y Lee. Pérez espera que su trabajo ayude al prometedor joven Lee.
“No sé lo que hay dentro de él (Lee), pero no se deja intimidar por nadie”, dice Pérez. “ Es un deporte diferente de los amateurs a los profesionales.”
Lee dice que no hay nada en su arsenal que no pueda destacar. Tiene un golpe izquierdo educado y una mano derecha rápida, entre otras armas.
“Hay un poco de todo”, dice. “Sólo hay que ser inteligente, y como en el ajedrez y las damas, hay que ir un paso por delante”.
La próxima pelea de Lee está programada para el 13 de marzo en Plant City, Florida, contra Luis Vega Sánchez en ProBox TV. Para Lee, su trayectoria como boxeador profesional apenas comienza y espera que algún día lo lleve a un campeonato mundial.
