THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time takes place in the year 1998 in and around the town of Swindon, England. The fifteen-year-old narrator of the story, Christopher John Francis Boone, discovers the slain body of his neighbour’s poodle, Wellington, on the neighbour’s front lawn one evening and sets out to uncover the murderer. His investigation is at times aided, and at other times hampered, by the mild form of autism he lives with. After Christopher hits a policeman in a misunderstanding at the scene of the crime, the police take Christopher into custody. They release Christopher with only a stern warning, under the condition that he promises to them and to his father not to look into the murder any further. Christopher chronicles his investigation in a book- the book we are reading- as part of a school assignment. Ignoring repeated warnings from his father, Christopher investigates the crime scene and conducts interviews with the residents of his block. He uncovers a more tangled plot than was first apparent. HERTZOG BOULEVARD

CLASS(Y) CLOWN

Hertzog Boulevard is a tragedy and a love story, but it’s also a very funny reminder of the fragility of our ideals. Who are the forgotten and over-looked people who live on Cape Town’s streets, how do they get up every morning to spend another day searching for food in dustbins and begging for money to buy a drink, and how different are they really to those of us who spend our days in the more acceptable parts of the city? Lazarus has just returned to his old stomping ground after spending time in Pollsmoor prison for attempted murder.

After the sold-out success of Love Factually and Planet Mirth, this popular comedian returns with BRAND NEW stand-up content. It’s time to be reeducated about the comic state of the world: covering everything from science, history and geography to phys-ed, sex education and home economics, this show promises some textbook laughs …

While incarcerated he converted to Christianity and became a preacher, but back on the streets he is forced to question whether he really changed as much as he thought he had. He is rediscovered by his oldest friend, Dorcas, who is a harsh realist, but fiercely protective of her long-time partner. Together, they share the tragedy and humour that always resides so close together for Cape Town’s bergie.

MARRIED BUT NOT TO EACH OTHER 16 NOVEMBER

He was white. She was not. They broke the law to dance. Langarm, the latest musical created by the award-winning David Kramer. Langarm is a story of love and intrigue set in the story-world of Cape Town’s ballroom dance culture in the 1960s. With the threat of the new apartheid laws hanging over their heads, people will do almost anything to survive.
In 1965 when Dinah Levin is widowed, she invites her nephew Jeff whose fiancé has just dumped him to help her manage her late husband’s Canterbury Hotel. Here he meets the lovely, young ballroom dancer Angelina, and when she asks him to partner her in The Swaziland Ballroom Championships, he sees it as an opportunity to humiliate his ex. Aware that he’ll risk arrest by flouting the law, he throws caution to the wind and agrees.

GALILEO OPEN AIR CINEMA SEASON 7 We attended the first Galileo screening with a relaxed atmosphere, good food, great service and an absolutely outstanding launch to season 7. It was a full-house on opening night at Kirstenbosch, with an excellent vibe and great people. When the crowd pulled in, there was barely a spot of lawn left visible once everyone was seated. The vendors were booming, with people still queuing right until the start of the movie. The addition of grande coffees this season are a plus for the coffeeholics and the Stellenbosch Brewing Company will be supplying cold ones for all the beer drinkers. Thai chicken and coconut samoosas were an interesting and creative twist on the usual varieties, a must try for anyone wanting to break out of the proverbial “samoosa mould”. New rotating Southern Suburbs venues gives easy access for week day screenings, and the longer, leisurely drives to the wine estates are left to weekends. A dance demo that tied in with the movie, Dirty Dancing was an added bonus for the audience’ pleasure. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS SEASON DAYS Gone from every second Saturday to EVERY Saturday at different wine estates across the Cape Winelands. Now running from Wednesday to Saturday, and December holiday Sundays. VENUES Thursdays are no longer a fixed venue, but are all brand new rotating venues, rotating between Willowbridge Mall (Bellville), Kenilworth Racecourse (Kenilworth), Glenellen Farm (Hout Bay) and Rustenburg Girls’ High School (Rondebosch). Fridays have always been rotating venues, but Galileo added the new Battery Park at the V&A Waterfront to Fridays, so these now rotate between Battery Park (V&A Waterfront), Central Park (Century City) and Meerendal Wine Estate (Durbanville) New Saturday venues: Leopard’s Leap Wine Estate, Stellenbosch Vineyards, Marlenique Estate, Simonsvlei Winery, Vredenheim Wine Estate, Under Oaks Wine Estate, La Paris Estate, Kleinevalleij Estate, Huguenot Monument, De Meye Wine Estate, Skilpadvlei Wine Estate & Hoogeind Manor MOVIES The Galileo kept the classics and the most-requested films and tried to cater for all genres but they have also added a lot of newer titles to the schedule this season, such as The Greatest Showman, Peter Rabbit, Mamma Mia Here We Go Again, Black Panther, Lady Bird, Beauty And The Beast, Ferdinand, A Quiet Place, Ready Player One, Downsizing, Get Out, Three Identical Strangers and Wonder Woman. Allee Bleue

ALLEE BLEUE The picnic offerings include a special basket for kids and the picnic ground is a large, fenced meadow in the heart of the estate. The hiring of a guide is not a must, you can choose to stroll by yourself after paying the small entry fee.

A tea ceremony takes place at 9:30 on Tuesdays in the healing garden and includes an informative explanation of nature’s medicine chest. The central layout of the garden follows the form of the human body with

herbs to heal the head, heart, lungs, digestive system, organs, skin, bones and feet. The trees planted in this garden are some of the “giants” in African healing traditions. Herbs along the outer wall follow the seasons, summer to winter, specially selected to heal, soothe and balance the body through the time-honoured pleasure of tea. Available to children over 10 years and older. BOSCHENDAL The existing Splish Splash play area is about to be joined by The Tree House - a place for children to day dream. FRANSCHHOEK CELLAR They offer a covered kiddie’s play area supervised by childminders (for children under 1.2m tall) and a babysitting service under your watchful eye.

Boschendal

GRANDE PROVENCE Red and white grape juice ‘tasting’ especially for children. Colouring-in activities occupy the children while parents concentrate on enhancing their wine tasting skills. A jungle gym, with supervision, occupies the children while parents linger over their lunch. Family picnics near the vines or within the beautiful gardens are a perfect style of relaxed al fresco dining over the summer. LA BOURGOGNE This family estate is situated along the Berg River. Overnight sleeping or day visiting allows strolls and picnics on the lush lawns. Franschhoek Cellar

They also offer a High Tea menu to celebrate any occasion. This is subject to pre-booking. LEOPARD’S LEAP The Rotisserie offers a ‘Family Table’ for groups of 10 or more with a dedicated waitron to take care of any need and platters to be shared. In smaller groups, children are offered a small craft set or educational games to keep them occupied. MONTE ROCHELLE Referring to children as ‘Little Corkers’ they created a parallel experience for the young ones. Although parental supervision is required, they offer dedicated accommodation for children, a range of activities, flexible menus in both restaurants to meet some fussy tastes, grape juice tastings, competitive gaming on the lawns that are located around the grounds and a scavenger hunt.

Grande Provence

NOBEL HILL Cosecha, the Latin inspired restaurant of the estate, is rolling out the elevated deck and ground level lawns that goes all the way to the river bank. Open and in sight, with special kids’ picnic basket that will appeal even to a more sophisticated child pallet. ZORGVLIET At a table with a view inside or at a picnic table under an old Oak, you can have your order from the restaurant menu or pre-order from a range of baskets, including a family option. No one rushes you off and a big jungle gym will keep the young one’s attention.

It is also the only estate that offers extra products made with the estate grapes: preserves, relish and decedent truffles with distinctive different flavours. Although not available to taste, our experience was amazing in one short word. DOOLHOF The place to combine a river walk with a picnic. leading venues LA PARADA NEW STOPPING POINT After firmly anchoring on trendy Bree Street and the iconic location at Constantia Nek, La Parada brings its Spanish tapas concept to the heart of the V&A Waterfront in early November. Continuing the evolution since its inception, the menu also progressed from two bites and traditional dishes to sharing plates that allows a small party to enjoy a larger selection. The menu is made up of classic Spanish dishes and local interpretations that rely on fresh local ingredients. Tapas include surprises like Cauliflower Popcorn and Tuna Tacos and Hum & Duck Croquets. Main courses attends vegetarians’ needs too and there is even a special list of sharing dishes for 3-4 people. The menu also include a ‘Bar Snacks’ list for those who just look for a light stop amidst the day. A perfect pairing to a glass of local wine, Cape Town crafted beer or a refreshing cocktail. It is an all day, two levels restaurant that includes open public spaces and a more secluded, private space to eat, meet and drink on the upper level. The chosen location, at the end of the Alfred Mall, right before you reach the Old Port Captain’s building, allows an uninterrupted view of Table Mountain and a preferable spot for a sunset drink and snack after a long day of touring. The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on hop-off tour is one of the best ways to discover the true essence of the Franschhoek Valley – picturesque vineyards, breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300 year history. Passengers aboard the hop-on hop-off tour will experience a unique and leisurely way to see the Franschhoek Valley as they journey through rolling vineyards in an open-side tram and open-air tram-bus stopping in at some of South Africa’s oldest and most distinguished wine estates. A combination of tram and tram-bus transports passengers around a loop of stops allowing them to hop-off at each stop and experience the activities on offer, be it wine tasting, a cellar tour, lunch or simply a stroll through the vineyards and when they are ready, hop-on to continue the tour. The tour takes passengers right into the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, with a narration focusing on the history of Franschhoek and wine cultivation in the valley and unparalleled views of the valley and vineyards. Franschhoek Wine Tram currently offers five hop-on hop-off lines to choose from: Blue Line, Red Line, Yellow Line, Green Line and Purple Line. on both ends

No visit to Cape Town is complete without taking in the scenery Chapman’s Peak Drive between Hout Bay and Noordhoek. The road, that was completed and opened in 1922 after 4 year of manual labour, still stands as a major engineering accomplishment from the previous century. Duiker Island

Both ends of the road offer interesting destinations and gatherings to consider when taking the road, making it a full day trip. HOUT BAY END The small Hout Bay Harbour is a sailing point to Duiker Island - inhabited by a large colony of young seals that are here to mature before they join other colonies around the Cape. There are a few boat operators that offer a tour onboard. The harbour is also home to The Lookout Deck, a favourite restaurant among locals and the one any family will bring its’ visitors to. Specialising in sea food and enjoying the direct connection to fishermen, freshness is a guaranteed.

Live music is played over weekends too. On the high end of the scale, Silversmith Wine Estate in Constantia Nek, just above Hout Bay, is home to La Colombe Restaurant. A culinary icon that often graces international lists and gradings of the best eateries in the world. Chef Scot Kirton’s philosophy and approach lies in the fusion of Asian and French cuisine and the pursuit of excellence and perfection on each plate. Offerings include a full vegetarian menu alongside the classical one. Booking is a must! If you happen to visit the area over the weekend, don’t miss the Bay Harbour Market. A great mixture of local traders that sell hand-made, hand crafted and local designs of clothing, personal and home goods. The far end of the market offers plentiful food stands with flavours from around the world. All fresh, all made to order. Live music and communal seating areas complete the market vibe. NOORDHOEK END Right next to this end you’ll find the southern-most wine estate of the Cape Peninsula, the Cape Point Vineyard, with a large veranda and lawns that roll down towards the dam and overlooks the ocean. The estate is known for the big range of white wines which can be explored via a tasting experience, accompanying a meal in the restaurant or alongside a picnic basket. Between 1 November and 31st May a community pop-up market happens every Thursday evening from 16:30 – 20:30, offering tastes of local cuisine and a guaranteed breathtaking sunset. Up the road is the location of the Noordhoek Farm Village. It is the home to several local vendors and a safe ground to let small children play around. It is also the home of the Foodbarn. The Foodbarn Restaurant offers casual fine dining in a relaxed and characterful old barn and is a well-known awarded establishment. It was joined in recent years by the Foodbarn Deli where you can stock up on fresh local goods or sit down for a light meal. At night the deli is transformed into a tapas bar serving inspired dishes with amazing textures and flavours.
