exotic flavour.

Silwerstroomstrand is ideal for long walks on the beach, which extends as an unbroken stretch of sand for some 3km. The northern half of the beach is backed by a vast dunefield, oriented diagonally to the shore as it reflects the direction of sand blown off the beach by the prevailing southerly winds. Part of the dunefield is a bare sheet of migrating sand, while the rest is covered with strandveld vegetation, which is particularly attractive when it flowers in spring from August to September. Clifton 4th Beach Temperatures can soar on the back beach, but down near the water’s edge, the icy sea has a welcome cooling effect. Here, on the hard, wet sand, more active types work up a sweat with beach bats and frisbees, periodically taking a refreshing dunk in the shallows. Others prefer a quick shower to cool off when roasting in the sun gets uncomfortably hot. Vendors ply the beaches selling snacks and drinks, so it is possible to spend a few hours here without wandering far. Even Silwerstroomstrand

CAMPS BAY REMINISCENT OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA Camps Bay can lay claim to having Cape Town’s most glamorous beach. Its sweeping arc of brilliant white sand is skirted by a row of elegant palm trees, while the beachfront Promenade along Victoria Road is lined with trendy restaurants and bars, reminiscent of the French Riviera. As well as being popular with the tanned and trendy set, this is also a very family-oriented beach, the great expanse of sand providing plenty of space for children to play. Gender Based Violence takes many forms

Muizenberg Beach

Physical Abuse

Muizenberg was once South Africa’s premier seaside resort, where the rich and famous built their holiday homes. Its beaches remain popular for their warm water, safe swimming and good surfing. The main car park at Surfers Corner is lined with surf shops, internet cafés and trendy eateries and the area is becoming fashionable once more. The beach behind the Pavilion complex has Blue Flag status. The red-and-white-striped Muizenberg Pavilion houses an information centre run by Cape Town Tourism and a functions hall used for conferences, concerts and weddings. The Pavilion complex in-

cludes a recreational park with a paddling pool, putt-putt (mini-golf) course and waterslide, as well as an elevated promenade. Surfer’s Corner is considered the place where surfing in South Africa started around 1910. It is still the place to learn to surf, and there are a number of surf schools catering for both young ‘grommets’ and late starters. Collisions with bathers necessitated a separate area to be demarcated for surfers. The shark-spotting initiative, begun here in October 2004 by a local surfing

personality, has since been expanded to other beaches by the City of Cape Town. Muizenberg is the only Blue Flag beach that can be reached by train. To the east of Surfer’s Corner is Muizenberg Beach, the main swimming beach. The presence of plough snails honing in on washed-up jellyfish and flotsam indicates that this is a safe beach with a gentle slope, regular waves and few currents. Lifesavers are on duty every day during Blue Flag Season, December to March. A colourful row of bathing boxes serves mainly as a picturesque tribute to the area’s historical heyday, when folk hired boxes for changing and storing their beach equipment and basked in the sun in the sheltered zone behind the boxes known fondly as the ‘snake pit’.

MNANDI LOVELY, JUST RIGHT Mandi is a day resort with excellent facilities, including a large freshwater pool with waterslides, landscaped lawns with playground apparatuses, picnic tables and braai sites, as well as long, sandy beaches that are good for walking and fishing. Lifesavers are on duty every day during Blue Flag season, December to March and keep watch over a stretch of beach that is safe for swimming in the warm water. This beach also offers scenic views of the Wolfgat Nature Reserve’s limestone cliffs. Mandi was reserved for black people during the apartheid era. Its name can be translated as lovely, just right. A little way offshore is a rocky outcrop known as Kapteinsklip, which means ‘captain’s stone’. The resort was granted Blue Flag pilot status for the 2003 summer season and awarded full status a year later. It has maintained Blue Flag status ever since.

BIKINI BEACH A GEM AT GORDON’S BAY Bikini Beach lies east of Gordon’s Bay harbor and is rated one of Cape Town’s top beaches due to its excellent facilities, cleanliness and safety standards. It is sheltered from the wind and is especially popular among trendy teenagers and Stellenbosch students for sunbathing, swimming and socialising. The beach slope is steeper here than in the rest of Gordon’s Bay, dropping off quickly into deep water, so the waves are larger and more powerful, sometimes breaking as “dumpers’’ on the shore. Surfers ride the left-hand break off the harbour wall, ending up at the beach.

chapman’s peak drive

Image sourced by African Travel Crew Chapman’s Peak Drive opened 6 May 1922 by the Governor of the Union of South Africa, His Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught; to connect the two towns of Hout Bay and Noordhoek and was an amazing engineering feat in its day, today almost 100 years later it still serves its purpose with added and improved – award winning – engineering that is in itself an awe inspiring site with catch fences and structures consisting of a half tunnel and canopy. Work started on the road in 1915 with the use of convict labour and took 7 years to complete at a cost of ₤20 000. Over the year’s erosion and weather conditions caused major rock falls and the road was closed numerous times. After intensive design and reconstruction in its current state Chapman’s Peak Drive was reopened to traffic as a toll road on 20 December 2003. The opening was a welcome return for the drive as an “international tourist destination” complementing other tourist destinations in the Western Cape. Chapman’s Peak Drive does however have temporary closures for routine maintenance and during dangerous weather conditions. 18

l Hello Cape Town December 2021

The 100 year anniversary celebration will culminate with a series of events centred around Chapman’s Peak Drive between the 6th to 8th May 2022. In order to celebrate connecting communities, two marketplaces will open to the public in both Noordhoek and Hout Bay, on either side of Chapman’s Peak Drive. The marketplaces will feature food and beverage stands, live music and fun and games for the kids. Special inter-market events will be held including Harley Davidson parades and rides, vintage car rallies across Chappies and cycling relays.

The celebrations will also include a Chapman’s Peak Drive frame as the centerpiece for photographic competitions with daily giveaways. The public are invited from across the city, province and country to visit the Chappies frame located midway along the drive, take a photo, post to Chapman’s Peak Drive social media and stand the chance to win some incredible daily prizes. Follow social media or check the website for updates and more info.

The working relationship to manage the drive from an environmental conservation perspective spans across sectors, from operations of the toll plaza and the maintenance of picnic sites and the road overall, to engineering continued with maintenance for rock catchment mitigation as an example and conservation of the natural heritage in alignment with SANParks, as Chapman’s Peak Drive runs through Table Mountain National Park being of utmost importance.

Having the accolade as one of the most scenic drives shared and/or awarded over the years by the likes of Conde Naste Traveller, Travel & Leisure, BBC Travel and News 24 to name a few, it goes without saying that experiencing the drive in its entirety is far more than just driving the 9km route with 114 curves as the road winds its way on the southerly extension of the Constantiaberg Mountain on the Cape Peninsula, forming part of the Table Mountain range.

Experiencing all that is Chapman’s Peak Drive spans all these whether you have an interest in engineering, history, geology, nature, leisure and adventure there is something for everyone to enjoy and is the perfect location whether you’re alone, a couple, a family, some friends or with whoever you choose to explore the space. You would want to come back more and more and if you use Chapmans Peak Drive frequently there are benefits by signing up to be a frequent user.

Active Adventures from Chapman’s Peak Drive Being active in the great outdoors never felt better. Chapman’s Peak Drive is a natural utopia for walking, hiking, rambling or ambling, whatever your ability or experience level. There’s no better way to communicate with nature and checkout the scenery, than to lace up your comfy shoes, strap on a backpack and hit the trail. Enjoy the restorative benefits of a great walk, the tranquillity of paddling in a sea-kayak below the towering cliffs, the adrenalin rush of surfing some big waves or the thrill of cycling on mountain passes. All you have to do is. “Pick Your Pace!”

The many ways of exploring Chapman’s Peak Drive This magnificent wonder of nature continues to delight locals and tourists. Popular for picnics and scenic drives, you can also experience its beauty on foot or by bicycle taking in the awe-inspiring views and winding along its spectacular curves. Some are lucky enough to travel on a Harley Davidson, a vintage sidecar, a trike or a classic Cobra.

And when you get to the other side, there’s more to explore. The landscape and the lifestyle has inspired artisans of all disciplines to explore their craft and follow their passion in the surrounding towns and villages. Enjoy the riches of their honed skills from chefs and producers to artists and entrepreneurs.

Summer Holiday Sun Safety Summer Holidays are here and all of us are excited to grab our towels and bathing suits and head for the beach or the swimming pool. The sun is our friend and we are all ready to tap into its energy to recharge our body, mind and spirit. The skin is the biggest organ and our armour keeping our bodies safe from the outside elements. A healthy skin ensures a healthy body. Skin can differ in texture, colour and other specific and zonal properties. Protecting the skin should be a daily routine. Limit sun damage and exposure prior to and after any treatment to prevent exaggerated inflammatory responses. Skin is exposed to visible light (HEV), Infrared Rays (IR), UVA and UVB. These rays penetrate to different depths of the skin where it may produce harmful effects such as: • Erythema and actinic damage (sunburn) • Stimulate pigmentation • Aggravate allergies • Cellular oxidation • Premature aging • DNA damage • Photosensitivity • Eye damage • Skin cancer

Solar protection can be formulated with physical, chemical and biological filters, which will either reflect or absorb the rays, or block the free radicals from the oxidative stress. Increasing the presence of the heat shock proteins (HSP) can effectively protect the collagen networks and promote type 1 collagenesis, which ensures the elasticity, flexibility and consistency of the skin. UVA increases the presence of collagenase which is the enzyme that degrades fibres and weakens tissue.

Photoprotection depends on: • Skin type (dry, oily or sensitive)

• Skin colour - lighter skin needs higher protection factor • When the perception of radiation is lower - at sea,

mountains or windy, cloudy days • Facial area needs higher protection as skin is thinner and more sensitive to radiation • Season of year • Pharmacological photosensitising treatments • Medical aesthetic treatments that can sensitise the skin These factors should be considered when choosing a sunscreen. A sunscreen which incorporates all three of these aspects and maintains an optimum balance between efficacy and cosmetics. The Mesoptroech sunscreen range from Mesoestetic provides an excellent

selection of sunscreens that address most of the factors mentioned.

Safety tips:

• Apply sufficient quantity sunscreen, 30 minutes before

exposure (2ml/cm2) • Use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 50 on the face • Reapply after every two hours, especially after drying off with a towel after swimming or sweating • Avoid midday hours 11:00 to 16:00 • Make sunglasses your favourite accessory • Wear a hat Sunscreen should be part of your daily skin routine, whether you go out into the sun or stay indoors. Some research shows that even prolonged exposure to cellphone, computer and television screens can lead to premature skin aging and pigmentation. Our skin is our most precious garment as we wear it everyday. It’s a life investment. Dr. Sebastiaan Pretorius Hello Cape Town December 2021 l

As one of South Africa’s oldest wine estates, we are proud of our heritage, our spectacular setting, our fertile soil and our award-winning wines. Most of all we are proud of our people, who share a philosophy that the winemaker merely finishes what nature has begun. Experience the rich and fascinating world of wine with Blaauwklippen Vineyards, combining traditional values with innovative ideas for over 333 years, to create one of South Africa’s top wine tourism destinations.
