TRUTH COFFEE ROASTING

Truth Coffee Roasting shop in Buitenkant street, Cape Town, has been mentioned by acclaimed UK news agency, The Telegraph, as being the very best in the whole world – and we agree; they’re the cream of the crop! From a list of 13 unique coffee shops and roasteries in the world, Truth’s steampunkinspired artisan coffee shop – a warehouse filled from top to bottom with metal piping and quirky, old machinery – surfaced on top, grinding out some of the top shops in France, Vienna, Singapore and Italy.

ROSETTA ROASTERY

Rossetta Roastery is an award winning, speciality coffee roasting company based in Cape Town. Additionally, they were named South Africa’s best coffee roastery in 2018 and 2019. They source speciality grade, single origin coffees from South & Central America, Africa and Asia, micro-roasting each one to best present its unique personality. Located in the centre of Cape Town’s creative culinary scene, The Bree street cafe and brew bar is probably the most complete expression of the Rosetta Roastery experience. There is a filter brew bar, a choice of two single-origin coffees for espresso-based drinks, and full access to the complete range of Rosetta’s roasted coffees.

We recently sat down with the owners, Nabeela and Gesant to learn more about their inspiration for the brandjust style over substance. The coffee here is truly great as well.

Deluxe serve up some of the city’s best coffees at amazing value. Their welcoming coffee shops dotted around town focus on quick, quality coffees. The original store on Church Street is worth a visit for its charming holein-the-wall style and authenticity, but the shiny new headquarters on Buitenkant Street is where most of the action seems to go down these days

Fit for Flying Despite all Covid restrictions coming and going, air travel is still happening. However, most people are more aware of possible health risks involved and deep vein thrombosis has become a global concern. So let your flight trip be safe by understanding a few key points of air travel, and developing some healthy habits. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism (a blockage of a main artery to the lung). The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. However several studies by the World Health Organization’s Research Into Global Hazards of Travel states that the risk of DVT may double after four hours of flying and in a cohort of healthy individuals, 1 in 6,000 people are affected, predominantly due to prolonged seated immobility. The risk is significantly raised when you have risk factors for DVT which can include being over the age of 40, having had

a DVT or blood clot in the lung before, having a history of blood clots in the family, hormonal effects of being pregnant or being on HRT or using oral contraceptives, recent surgery or trauma, and also many types of cancer.

In essence, clots develop if blood does not adequately move! The calf muscles have been termed the “Vein Heart” and are pivotal in ensuring blood flow in the deep veins – keep moving them... even intermittently is good enough!

We’re here for you when you need it most When you or a loved one have suffered a serious medical emergency or injury as a result of an accident or traumatic incident, prompt intervention by trained medical professionals could mean the difference between life and death. 16

l HELLO CAPE TOWN MARCH 2022

Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Such aeroplane exercises include rotating the ankles, pushing down alternately with heels and toes, standing calf raises (go to a corner near the toilets or the galley to do these), alternately tensing and relaxing parts of the legs (working upwards from feet to thighs and hips then down again), various back, shoulder and neck stretches or even bringing a tennis or lacrosse ball on board with you to massage your leg muscles. Gently push the ball into your thigh and roll it up and down your leg. Alternatively, you can place the ball under your leg. Also do not get dehydrated as one’s blood will thicken and increase the risk of clotting consume adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Compression stockings or even wearing medical compression socks to ensure a compression of 15 to 30 mm Hg at the ankle will stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling and

THE 44TH CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR The Cape Town Cycle Tour is an annual cycle race hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, usually 109 km (68 mi) long. It is the first event outside Europe to be included in the Union Cycliste Internationale’s Golden Bike Series.[2] South Africa hosts some of the largest, by the number of entrants, sporting events in the world with three being the largest of their type. The Cape Town Cycle Tour, with as many as 35 000 cyclists taking part, is the world’s largest individually timed cycle race. It is traditionally staged on the second Sunday of March and has enjoyed well-known competitors such as Miguel Indurain, Jan Ulrich, Matt Damon, Helen Zille and Lance Armstrong. The 44th Cape Town Cycle Tour is taking place on Sunday with more than 22 000 cyclists participating. Cycling for charity is the cornerstone of the Cape Town 22 20 18 24

Cycle Tour, with the bulk of your entry fee heading straight into Rotary and PPA coffers. You can choose to do even more with your miles, though, by joining a charity group, or kickstarting your own charity drive History of the Cycle Tour It all began with a leisurely breakfast in 1977 when engineer Bill Mylrea and architect John Stegmann – discussed the cycling safety for the small number of recreational cyclists who travelled the roads of the Western Cape, and mobility for the masses. Cape Town needed a network of safe and efficient cycle paths that would keep riders safe and allow commuters to get to and from work swiftly and in one piece. After many years of submitting, pleading, begging and cajoling including a a 3 000-signature petition that were getting them no where with governement, the established cyclists revolted and created The Big Ride In.

Held under the auspices of the newly formed Western Province Pedal Power Association (now called PPA) in 1977, the founders of the Cape Town Cycle Tour set out to demonstrate that a lot of people rode bikes. And so they did, with hundreds riding into the Cape Town CBD, to the City Hall, the Grand Parade, Adderley Street and the Foreshore. Included in their number was the mayor, John Tyers. And it was impressive, to all but the relevant authority, which still saw no future for bike paths. From this hugely unsuccessful success was born the Peninsula Marathon – a gruelling event that would, according to the experts at the WPPPA ‘require at least two months’ preparation’. They even went as far as recommending: ‘Unless you are able to spend R300–R500 on a super machine, your best bet is a ten-speed tourer (with drop handlebars, if you like) for around R100 new, or R50–R75 secondhand.’ The Peninsula Marathon never saw the light of day, as an event. Cape Town mountain biker and potter Steve Shapiro harangued the marketing folk at The Argus (where he was working at the time) to get involved. It was to be a mass-participation event open to all who wanted to enter. From the outset, the organising committee wanted the Cycle Tour to be an official, sanctioned event, but no matter how much the Department of Sport loved the idea and wanted a part of it, their proviso that it only be open to white participants remained a stumbling block, to the degree that Mylrea was forced to write the department’s representative an extremely polite letter in the build-up to the event, telling him that this was a non-segregated event. This was brave stuff in the late 1970s, when BJ Vorster and PW Botha were ruling the roost. But the spirit of cycling, and its inclusivity, prevailed, and on 28 October 1978 over 500 cyclists left the start line outside the Castle in Strand Street. Initially, a number of options

were looked at – northwards to Melkbos and back; out to Paarl for a 250–300km return trip; at one point it was even going to be a two-dayer – before the founding fathers settled on a start as close to the City Hall as they dared, before heading south along the newly built Blue Route freeway and on down to Simon’s Town. From there, the initial plan was to head into the Cape Point Nature Reserve, turn around at the farthest point, and for the riders to return whence they came. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if the thought of 35,000 riders negotiating that narrow reserve road in two directions is too scary), the managers of the park, SANParks in today’s parlance, threw their toys out of the cot, and rather than kowtow to yet another quasi-government department, the organisers decided to bypass the entrance to the reserve and head through Misty Cliffs, over Slangkop and then Chapman’s Peak and Suikerbossie, before finishing at the lamp-post opposite what

is now The Bay Hotel (it was called the Rotunda in 1978), where a pair of tables welcomed finishers. 2022 Winners It’s a fiercely competitive and highly anticipated event that lures in cyclists from around the world. This year, the wet weather proved to be no danger for the best of the best. The winners of the “most beautiful bike race in the world” is Marc Pritzen on Team Qhubeka is the 2022 male champion while Kim Le Court on Team GalileoRisk-Infinity brought home gold for the women this year

EAGLES’ NEST WINES Eagles’ Nest was originally a section of Groot Constantia, the wine supplier to European nobility, established by Simon van der Stel in the late 1600’s. Eagles’ Nest’s history reveals that it operated as a commercial farm producing export fruit, as well as vegetables for the local market, up until the 1960’s. Over time the farm has had a number of owners, since 1984 it has been in the control of the Mylrea family.
