The places of the holiday region Lienz

672 m You’ll have heard this - Lienz describes itself as a sunny town and maintains that the south begins here. A lot can be said and written, and there is a whopping 2020 of sunshine a year on average and a real Mediterranean style in the town. Stroll through the town in summer for a while and you’ll quickly notice that there is no more appropriate way to describe beautiful Lienz. And since mankind does not live on sun, southerly location and sunshine alone, Lienz also has so much more to offer. Lienz is a very charming small city with some 11,883 inhabitants, where at every turn the past and the lively present meet. Lienz was described as a town in 1242 by Bolzano notary Jakob Haas. From the flat axe dating from 2000 B.C. to Lienz’s significance in the early and High Middle Ages, its history has been diverse and eventful. From 1900 the population has grown considerably and with that Lienz has slowly become what it is today. You can of course busy yourself with the history of Lienz, but you by no means have to. You will notice that Lienz didn’t just appear yesterday and wasn’t built in a day. The town has been through lots of transformations and changes. In the last few decades there have been numerous make-overs, traffic-calming and revival of the down town areas. And with great success. These days anyone who strolls through the town, keeping their eyes and ears open, will find a town in full bloom. You never get the feeling that you are just in one of the many small towns, but you always know where you are. Lienz is more of a hub and a small, charming metropolis and has retained its own very specific character.

BINOCULARS Cultural sights - Lienz

The Antonius church from the 16th century. It was converted into an orthodox sanctuary to give the Cossacks – left-over in the wars at Lienz – an own church. Their appearance was renovated by citizens of Lienz in uniqe cooperation and forms a beautiful end to the main square. The war memorial of the district next to the parish church of St. Andrä is a monument (from 1925) by Clemens Holzmeister. The war memorial chapel was designed by Osttirol’s famous painter Albin Egger with a four-part picture cycle, that initially met with fierce resistance and temporarily led to its closure. Tyrol’s oldest piety column (around 1400) stands in the Kärntner Straße at the “Siechenhaus” (expression from the plague time). The Florian-fountain at the central plaza is a monumental figure, made of copper and emanates from the world-famous Osttirol artist Prof. Jos Pirkner. The franciscan church with monastery in the Muchargasse dates from the 14th century (gorizian masons guild). The altars of the gothic style church were built at the end of the 17th century. Especially worth seeing are the ribbed vault and the frescoes from the middle of the 15th century, as well as the pietà of the altar (around 1400). The Iselturm-tower is part of the partially preserved city walls of Lienz. The tower has been restored, the fresco on the wall is by Toni Fronthaler. The medieval fortification dates back to 1311 and goes back to an extension of the town. Well-preserved parts are still along the Iselkai, at the church Spitalskirche (north-east city tower), in the Kreuzgasse as well as in the Zwergergasse and Mühlgasse. The monastery “Klösterle”, founded in 1250, with the associated Dominican church “Visitation of the Virgin” unites gothic and baroque architectural styles. The church burned down several times together with the monastery. Especially pointing out are the old fresco “Maria Mittlerin” and the altar of the St. Wolfgang chapel on the north side. The Liebburg - the landmark on the central plaza of Lienz, was built from 1605 to 1608 by the counts of Wolkenstein as a residential castle. The families coat of arms can be seen above the portal. In 1609 and 1723 the Liebburg burned down, later it was partly a hospital or used for military needs. For more than 100 years it served as the official residence of the district-administration before it was bought by the city government of Lienz in 1981. After extensive renovations it shone in new splendor as the new city hall.

The Marian column at Johannesplatz was erected after the devastating fire in 1798 at the place where the St. John’s Church formerly existed. The parish church of the Holy Family at Andreas-Hofer-Straße (South Tyrolean settlement) is a contemporary functional building with an artistically valuable glass mosaic portal by local sculptor Jos Pirkner. The Way of the Cross emanates by the sculptor Unterweger from Thal-Assling. The St. Michael’s Church at the borough “Rindermarkt”, first documented in 1308, was the burial ground of the lords of Graben - high respected citizens of the city. The church is only used on special ecclesial occasions, eg. for weddings. It has been renovated in recent years by inhabitants of Lienz unter vast expence and is now a worth seeing gem in the northern part of the town. (key in Beda Weber Gasse 9) The very worth seeing parish municipal church St. Andrä is the oldest and largest church of the city. It was built in the 15th century in romanesque style on the foundations of an early christian sacral building (bishop’s church from the 5th century) and was converted from the gorizian masonry guild into a three-aisled gothic basilica. The altars are from the baroque period, the 78 m high tower got just finished in the 20th century. The blacksmith ”Rieplerschmiede” – a listed building – at the end of the Schweizergasse dates back to the 16th century. The Tamerburg (Tammerburg) is one of the most beautiful and important secular buildings in Tyrol. The town-judge Ernst von Dobrawic (1242-1290) verifable was the first inhabitant of this residence. Owners were mostly aristocrats like the family Flaschperger, Mühlstätter and Wolkenstein-Rodenegger. From the clan Welsperger the building got its “manor-house-like” appearance. Its purpose of use over the centuries became from a aristocratic estate over a Pfleghaus (administration) to a farmhouse (feudal tenure of Bruck Castle).

Ainet

747 m Only 7.5 km from Lienz, the community of Ainet lies on the sunny side of the anterior Iseltal with its mountain-hamlets Alkus and Gwabl (ca. 1,000 inhabitants). The panoramic view to the Lienz Dolomites is great. In addition to accommodation establishments and guesthouses, rafting and adventure companies playing a key role in ensuring that Ainet is well-known to many guests of Osttirol. The Iseltal valley – named after the river Isel, is an absolute white water eldorado on its watersteam between Huben and Ainet and canoeists even find a rodeo wave next to the bridge Schlaitener Brücke. Incidentally, the Isel is the last remaining intact glacier river in the central alpine region. Also the mountains of the National Park Hohe Tauern with beautiful summits above 3000 m (Hochschober, Alkuser Rotspitze and Prijakt) and the wonderfully situated mountain lake Alkusersee let the heart of every hikers and alpinists beating faster. At the valley ground are the cycle trail (Lienz-Matrei) and flat hiking trails along the river, a gentle, cozy alternative to the mountain experience.

Gaimberg

757 m Historically seen, the entire sunside hill, which adjoins Lienz in the north, bore the name „Gaimberg“. Even at the time of the roman city of Aguntum, there may have been a few houses here. Exemplary is the found of remains of a roman villa during excavations. The area Grafendorf with its parish church of St. Bartholomew (center of village) dates back to the Gorizian family of the counts of Grafendorf. To the 750 inhabitants counting community, belongs a hotel and a few pensions, as well as a leisure center with tennis courts. Since the year 1958, as the mountain railway was opened up to the Zettersfeld, Gaimberg has also gained a touristic importance. 28

Today, the Zettersfeld is a popular hiking destination for families in the summer due to its gently slopes, where restaurants and accommodation facilities invite for a vacation on the largest mountain meadow of Osttirol. In winter, there are beautiful, sunny ski slopes with an incomparable panoramic view to the opposite Lienz Dolomites.

Iselsberg-Stronach 750-1250 m The Iselsberg with an altitude of 1024 m forms the transition between the valleys of Drautal and Mölltal. Already in roman times a surfaced path led from Aguntum over this pass. On its southern hillside lays the village Iselsberg, with its hamlet Stronach in the east, with a total of 610 inhabitants. Parts of the community count to the National Park Hohe Tauern and is a real paradise for hikers and mountaineers (Schobergruppe with 53 summits over 3000 m, several shelters and mountain lakes). Beautiful circular hiking trails in the Schobergruppe, like to the Almsee, or Schwarzkofelsee as well as up to the Stronachkogel with a bear cave invite to heavenly hikes. The earth pyramids in Stronach, a relic from the ice-age, can be reached via Stronach or Gödnach, on the way to the Ederplan. They spot out brightly from the forest graben next to the rivulet Gödnacher Bach. Furthermore, after half an hour‘s walk you will find the wetland area „Zwischenberger Lacke“, which was declared a natural monument in 1992.

BINOCULARS Tourist attractions - Iselsberg-Stronach The castle Walchenstein, on the southern hillside of the Stronacher Kogel in east of the gorge of Dölsacher creek, had great importance for the counts of Gorizia in the later middle ages. Count Albert I awarded this Görzer castle to his Friulian servant Wolfram de Ragogna. After several changes of ownership it fell by purchase to Heinrich von Lavant in 1339, a Gorizian vassal. During the chaos of the 13th and 15th century the castle Walchenstein got assigned the task, blocking the way over the pass. After 1500, it came into civil property and gradually fell into disrepair. In recent years archaeological investigations were made, remains of the walls became preserved and accesses were made from the Moarhof and the Wallensteinhöfe for visitors.

Lavant 675 m - a small, quiet, agricultural characterized village, located about 7 km in the southeast of Lienz directly under the imposing rock-walls of the Lienz Dolomites. On its widely conspicuous church hill „Kirchbichl“ – with the pilgrimage church of St. Ulrich and the older church according to St. Peter and St. Paul – can be found excavations of an early christian basilica from the roman period (2nd to 5th century) as well as remains of a medieval refuge castle. This hill is one of the most historically interesting places in Osttirol. Next to the rectory there is a small museum displaying excavated items. Accommodation for guests is offered by an inn, appartment landlords and private pensions or farm holiday hosts. The comfortable Hotel & Spa Dolomitengolf 4-starsuperior and the Dolomite Golf Suites 5-star-Hotel are located next to the 36-hole golf course. Away from traffic and inserted into a beautiful natural scenery, this resort is one of the most beautiful of Austria. The direct connection to the Drau cycle path, a well-maintained network of hiking trails, the viewing platforms at Frauenbach waterfall, the riding school „Pegasus“ in the periphery and a sports court in the village center with tennis and funcourt complete the offer.

BINOCULARS Tourist attractions - Lavant The church hill of Lavant with the roman excavations: On the rocky hill are the two pilgrimage churches of St. Ulrich (baroque building) and St. Peter and St. Paul (gothic nave, carved winged altar), and stations of the cross with a crucifixion group. Next to it are the uncovered remains of an early christian episcopal church (2nd - 5th century) and a medieval refuge castle. In the small museum findings from several centuries can be watched (eg roman marble stones, grave slabs, household effects, jewelery, coins, weapons, tools, ceramics, etc. - most of them date from the 3rd - 6th century). A model of the settlements on this hill explains its exposed location surrounded by deep canyon, that are only accessible from the northeast. Opening times 2021: from Eastern All saints’ Day, all day long

Leisach 710 m The small holiday-village with inns, guesthouses and private rooms, 2 km in the south of Lienz (900 inhabitants) is the starting point for many hiking and mountain tours up to the Hochstein and in the Lienz Dolomites - eg in the untouched Kerschbaumer valley, where mountain hikers and climbers will find relaxation and adventure. From the village also starts the panoramic road „Pustertaler Höhenstraße“. Attractions: The gothic parochial church of St. Michael with its high surrounding wall reminiscents of an fortress church. She was first mentioned in documents by the year 1308 and became renovated gothically in the years 1910-1912. Remarkable are the three winged altars by Josef Bachlechner from Hall in Tirol. About 2 km from 32

Leisach the ruins of the Lienzer Klause are located – an old valley and road fortress from the middle ages. In earlier times, the entire traffic from and to the Pustertal moved through this hermitage (see infobox below). A paradise to relax and rest is the leisure center Leisach, with the forestside swimming pool near the river Drau, the adjacent sports facilities and the children‘s adventure playground.

BINOCULARS Tourist attractions in Leisach The Lienzer Klause (Leisach - Burgfrieden) was built in 1240 by the bishop of Bressanone in fear of the counts of Gorizia as a barrier and defensive system (fortress) on the way through the Pustertal. However, soon the fortress falls into the hands of the Gorizian counts. Expanded and strengthened later, the hermitage was meaningful one last time ... at the time of the French wars. French millitary general Rusca Lienz was successful stopped here on its march through the Pustertal and thereafter he was also forced to leave Lienz. 33

Nikolsdorf

756 m Nikolsdorf - a small summer resort in the Drautal valley (900 inhabitants) with inns and bed and breakfast, was first mentioned in 1207 as „Itildorf“, popularly called „Igglsdorf“. East of the village, on the border between Osttirol and Carinthia, the Drautal valley narrows to an gate – the Kärntner Tor. Well worth seeing in the village are the parochial church of St. Bartholomew - which is still gothic in the core, although it was enlarged in 1785. In the hamlet Nörsach stands the late gothic pilgrimage church of St. Chrysanthen with an old sacrifice table in the front hall. During restoration work valuable gothic frescoes were uncovered. The newly renovated castle Lengberg -1190 mentioned in documents - is a simple complex with kennel, yard, balcony-like round path and former drawbridge. Nikolsdorf is an ideal resting place for bike tourists as well as pilgrims of the St. James Way. On the western periphery of the small village an aerodrome is particularly popular for aeronauts (see page 92). A further attraction is the family-friendly climbing garden at Rabantkofl - see page 80.

Nußdorf-Debant 665 m – located on the sunny side of the valley ground, only 4 km from Lienz, it is the third largest community in Osttirol with about 3,200 inhabitants. The former two seperate districts got united just in 1995 and celebrated the ennoblement becoming a market town. An inn, various apartments and private rooms, as well as some restaurants and cafes are provided to recreation seeking guests. Otherwise, the townscape is determined by the numerous trading and commercial enterprises - an eldorado for shopping trips of various kinds. A beautiful tennis hall with sauna and outdoor courts are available to sport athletes. At the border to the neighboring municipality of Dölsach, there is the archeology park „Aguntum“ with excavations from roman times (see information on page 43). For high-altitude hikes with the whole family, the alpine meadows of the Zettersfeld offer themselves and for mountaineering enthusiasts, the untouched Debanttal in the Schobergruppe is a special tip (20 summits over 3000 m) ... finding there a wide range of activity, from cozy hut walks to challenging climbs - a high alpine paradise like from the picture book (National Park core zone).

Oberlienz 756 m – Oberlienz 756 m - located about 3 km from Lienz at the entrance to the Iseltal valley. The village – in common with the hamlet Oberdrum – with 1,450 inhabitants spreads on the sunny Schleinitz-detritic cone, covered with fields and meadows protected from the wind by stone walls and hedges. In exception of the field corridors at Virgen, this landscape picture can’t be found a second time at East and North Tyrol. The municipality also includes the district Glanz beyond the Isel. Archaeological findings and investigations prove that Oberlienz got settled very early. A huge roman plant (villa rustica) in the area of Lesendorf underlines this. The convenient location on the sunny hillside is the ideal starting point for varied hikes. A wonderful landscape, the magnificent panorama view to the Lienz Dolomites, designated walks and educational hiking trails with nicely designed resting places are inviting you. Well worth seeing are the open-air museum (see info box below) as well as some hayracks and double hayracks. The legendary church “Helenenkirchl” with the two oldest bells of the district is located high above the village.

BINOCULARS Tourist attractions in Oberlienz The open-air museum Oberlienz tells fromthe life of farmers and craftsman. The walk along the open-air museum is also part of the theme path “From the Old Life” (duration approx. 2 hours) and starts at the “Bad- & Brechelstube” in Oberdrum. Formerly there exist 19 Brechelstuben (building/gadget to work up flax). At the “Wollkartatsche” in Oberdrum (driven by a paddle wheel) the washed wool was made ready for spinning, by wooden rollers spiked with iron pins. In the “Kornkasten” (corn chamber) of Oberlienz (17th century) were stored field and garden fruits, potatoes and barrels of turnip tops in the cellar. On the upper floor – the “Korngränte” – was the grain store of the village! Thick walls with small, open hatches made it possible to store smoked meat all year round. Also leather harnesses for draft animals and working tools can be found here. In the “grain mill” at the farm “Erbhof Znopp”, all cereals were once ground and animal-food was processed with the “Kleestampf”. Straw-choping-and-threshing-machines and diverse small machines were also powered by the mill. In the farriery the waterwheel was used to operate the big hammer and a clever system secures the air supply for the bellows.

Schlaiten 876 m Schlaiten is located in the frontal of the Iseltal valley, about 130 m above the valley ground on the eastern flank of the Deferegger Alps. In passing through the valley, the village (about 500 inhabitants) is barely visible, as its main community is situated on a high plateau. This quiet, by transit traffic spared area invites you to linger. Even the first settlers in the middle ages (Slavs) appreciated the magnificent location. In search for precious metals, miner‘s left here holes and pits as silent eyewitnesses. Schlaiten is particularly concerned with the preservation of rural, peasant tradition. The center of the village with flower-filled balconies shows a harmonious overall picture and when music band and the marksmen guild march up, the mood is perfect. An inn, a guesthouse and private landlords care for the well-being of holiday guests. Very popular is the mountain bike cycling route „Schlaiten-Glanz-Oberlienz and back to Ainet“, because it‘s not too strenuous. Unforgettable impressions can be experien-

Thurn

854 m The small village with 640 inhabitants is located 2 km above Lienz on the sunny Schleinitz-detritic cone. It consists of five hamlets: Dorf, Zauche, Oberdorf, Prappernitze and Zettersfeld. In addition to some appartments and guesthouses in the village - including farm holidays - there are other accommodation establishments high up in the ski resort and hiking area Zettersfeld. Tourist attractions: The singlenave succursal church of St. Nicholas from the 15th century restored in 1975. The picture „The Last Supper“ is from the Paul-Troger-Circle. On the hill above the hamlet Prappernitze the mountain-church of St. Helena is located, which actually belongs to the municipality of Oberlienz. The legendary gothic-style building dates from the time of the counts of Gorizia (first mentioned in 1306). According to ancient customs, every year at Easter - at the resurrection celebration - bread loaves are distributed to the faithful. Interesting walks and educational hikes are the bird-theme-trail „Vogelerlebnisweg“ and the trail „Vom alten Leben“, telling from the old life. Description of the educational trails on page 65/66.

672 m The holiday village Tristach is located about 2.5 km southeast of Lienz. First settlement and church descending from very old times. Despite the vicinity to the city, there are still some farmers among the approximately 1,400 inhabitants who cultivate the extensive fields around the village. Guests from all over the world not only appreciate the comfortable accommodations – from the Parkhotel at the lake Tristacher See and various inns, right up to farm holidays – also especially the proximity to the magnificent rock landscape of the Lienz Dolomites. Via the beautiful panoramic road Dolomitenstraße (see excursion tips on page 109) you can reach the Dolomitenhütte by car in 1,620 m, where you will find yourself at the entrance to the „Laserz“, a natural paradise of first rank. A two hours‘ walk further, stands the Karlsbaderhütte, near the lake Laserzsee - framed by the imposing towers and summits of the Lienz Dolomites. In the municipal area ist also the Große Sandspitze (2,772 m) located – the highest peak of the massif. The surrounding of the village is very attractive for hikers. From blithe walks at the valley ground to demanding alpine ascents up the Rauchkofel, 40

there is a wide range of possibilities. Night owls appreciate the proximity to the city - and the golf course in Lavant (36 holes) is only 5 km away. The lake Tristacher See (821 m above sea level, surface 7.5 ha, water temperature in summer up to 25 ° C) is the only bathing lake in Osttirol (already liste in 1500 as property in the fishery book of Emperor Maximilian I) - and especially on hot summerdays a worthwhile destination for bathers. The area around the lake also invites for strolling. On shady forest trails you will circle it in about half an hour. Just a few minutes away, there is a real natural gem - the natural monument „Alter See“ (Old Lake) - a unique biotope. On a fixed wooden gangplank the particularly valuable animal and plant world can be observed - for example, various species of rare dragonflys.

Cossack cemetery with Cossack memorial chapel About 25,000 Cossacks allied with the German Empire and originating from the Donand Caucasus-regions fled in May 1945 from northern Italy to Osttirol. The extradition to the Soviet Union threatened them with death or exile in Siberia. Nevertheless, they became – whether men, women or children – interned and finally handed out by British troops to the Red Army. Only a few managed the escape. The dramatic incidents surround43

ing this deportation placed Osttirol for the first and only time in a setting of world history. The Cossack cemetery in the Peggetz near Lienz and the memorial stone to the Ataman of all Cossacks, General Helmuth von Pannwitz, in Tristach, are still reminiscent of the so-called “Tragedy on the Drava”. The Kammerlanderhof at Thurn The cultural association “s’ Kammerland - Kulturinitiative Thurn” was founded in 2001 and since then has been endeavoring to renovate and maintain the 500year-old listed farm house – which represents in its authenticity a unique rural treasure. Through the restoration of the interiors, facades and balconies as well as the wooden shingles of the roof and the reconstruction of the small farmers garden, the Kammerlanderhof regained its authentic appearance. Particularly worth seeing are the original smokers kitchen, the granary with old equipment and grain chests and a small bedroom with furniture of the century turning around 1900. At the attic, a theme-exhibition (cobbler workshop, Machlkammer, linen production and processing) provides insights into historic farming craftswork. The room is also used as a cozy hub for social gatherings and smaller events such as poetry readings. Burg Heinfels Heinfels Castle was completely restored from 2016 to 2020. It is the most extensive castle complex of Osttirol and the Puster Valley. The travel writer Beda Weber described Heinfels as a queen who raises up into the air. In fact, the high castle sits enthroned on a striking rock 1130m above sea level. Heinfels is a sight, museum and event location. The museum extends over an internal and external area of 1000 m² and offers an overall experience of historical masonry, wonderful views and a history that has been brought to life. Narrow guards walkways and round towers alternate with wide panoramic views. Modern architecture makes the ruins accessible and even the highest tower for those that are free from giddiness. Visitors of Heinfels are accompanied only by trained cultural mediators. A chapter of Heinfels‘ eventful stories is told in every castle chamber and every hall ... with models of the castle, film and audio stations, photographs, original objects and animations. The journey through time begins with the founding legend of Heinfels, with the battle of the legendary giant Haunold against the Huns. It leads through everyday life at Heinfels, the geopolitical situation up to the storming of the castle during the peasant uprisings. Personal stories are also told, like those from the persecuted Hutterer - members of church reforming movement - as well as Thomas Hanns, the convicted murderer of the cook von Heinfels. The popular saying: „The Pregler gives strength and joy of life, protects against evil spirits and boredom, promotes digestion, the feeling of life and so many other things.“ DIOGENES. The blue ICE Gin, ice blue due to the blue flowers of the clitoria ternatea, holds a special surprise for its connoisseurs: when mixed with tonic, a pink long drink is created.

Großvenediger, 3.657 m – The world-old Majesty

Mount Großvenediger is Austria’s fourth-highest mountain, and probably the bestknown one next to Großglockner and Wildspitze. Mount Großvenediger can be climbed by everyone if they are being accompanied by a mountain guide, have mastered a few tours to mountain huts and acclimatised themselves. Climbing this mountain is an unforgettable adventure amidst the splendid glaciers of the Hohe Tauern.

Großglockner, 3.798 m – Welcome to the King

Austria’s highest mountain - mentioned as “Glocknerer” in a printed atlas in 1561 - is still an attraction in the entire region and, with more than 5000 summit ascents per year, a popular destination for mountaineers. Around 30 routes (with variations) lead to the Großglockner summit. More than 90% of all ascents take place in the summer months via the normal ascent with the hotspots: Bahnhof, Glocknerleitl, Kleinglockner, Glocknerscharte and Großglockner summit. An ascent try up to the Großglockner peak is strongly recommended accompaning with a certified mountain guide! Ascent- and route options to the summit of the Großglockner and Großvenediger as well as information on booking mountain guides are available from the local mountain guides‘ information offices. Biking-Mountain

Cycling - MTB - E-Bike

... on the southern side of the Alps - a special kind experience. No matter whether you ride the comfortable cycle paths along the Drau or Isel or venture out on the mountain bike routes of the most varied degrees of difficulty - every bike friend will come at his expense. There are over 1,000 km of mountain bike trails that lead through the fantastic mountains of Osttirol. Enjoy a completely new driving experience with an electric bike: Relaxed and environmentally conscious, the motorized bicycles take you through the exciting nature of Osttirol. Due to the powerful engine, headwind and long distances lose their scare. Thanks to the electric motor, cycling is guaranteed without any effort: Whether on long cycling tours with ones sporty partner or on tours carrying heavy luggage ... the engine unit supports whenever the driver wants or needs help.

Drau Cycle Path San Candido - Sillian - Lienz - Oberdrauburg (only a part of the European-DrauCycle-Path from Dobbiaco to Marburg); total length approx. 60 km; average gradient of about 1.5% (mostly flat); asphalted; Also popular are individual stages such as from Lienz to Thal to the adventure swimming pool VITHAL (with a stop at the water adventure park at Galizia gorge) or from Lienz to Oberdrauburg to rural farmerly taverns and the swimming bath. Along the route, there are several guest houses – „Drauradweg-Wirte“ prepared on bikers needs, with special cycling packages and services. Detailed information, maps and the description of the entire route can be found on the homepage www.drauradweg.com

Iseltal valley - cycle path Lienz - Matrei i.O., approx. 29 km; average gradient about 1%; mostly asphalted; barely frequented provincial road section between St. Johann and Huben; to cross the Felbertauernstraße at Huben and before Matrei. 82

Cycling joy – round course Lienz valley ground The route has a length of 40 km and leads around the district capital city Lienz through the surrounding villages. It is consistently signposted and marked with the seal “Talbodenrunde 40 km”. Varied rich; only with small and short pitches; offering many places with beautiful views. Numerous restaurants invite you to linger in their beautiful gardens.

White Water Sports

Canyoning is the right thing for the adventurous who just want to experience something special. However, you should already have some alpine experience and an extra dose of courage for the exciting abseiling and sliding sections through narrow gorges and over waterfalls.

Canoeing Osttirol is a real eldorado for lovers of white water sports. Especially the kayak experts will find playgrounds of all difficulty levels, which are a real challenge for advanced canoeists. Not for nothing a well-known canoe track on Drava and Isel is part of the „Dolomitenmann“ – the world toughest team-challange under the sun. Even normal recreational athletes find here all the white-water-levels that meet their skills and interested newcomers can be introduced to the world of whitewater sports by experts. A frequent meeting point for kayakers is the rodeo wave at the Schlaitener bridge in Ainet. This specially built wave for practice is also an attraction for passing hikers, to watch the canoe-spectacel. More information about easy and challenging whitewater trails can be found in the whitewater guide „Wildwassereldorado Osttirol“ (online-PDF at www.osttirol.com).

Rafting The river Isel in Osttirol enjoys the reputation of being one of the best rafting routes in central Europe. During the summer months it‘s really busy at this river. Osttirol‘s rafting companies offer the opportunity to participate in such a funny and exciting wave ride. Great emphasis is placed on safety. The participants will be equipped with life jackets, wetsuits and helmets and of course the tours will be guided only by officially inspected and authorized boaters. If you want to be part of this great adventure, you should be able to swim, not be younger than six years and with no fear of getting wet. Different levels of difficulty can be booked - from light family tours to wildest rodeo rides for hardened wave-professionals. Virtually anyone can easily participate in that sport, therefore rafting is by far the most popular way to get to know the fascination of the white-water-elements. 100

Most beautiful head of the valley in the eastern alps – Gschlößtal At the foot of the Grossvenediger is the recognized most beautiful head of valley of the Eastern Alps. Innergschlöß is reachable from the Matreier Tauernhaus on a flat forest road - passing the small rock chapel - or on the other side of the glacier brook on a romantic hiking trail. As a hike for the more ambitious ones, the glacier educational trail is still highly recommended here. It leads to the most impressive places in the Venediger group. You learn how glaciers modeled the landscape and not far from the lake Salzbodensee lies the „eye of God“ - a natural, small, triangular pond with a cottongrass island in its center. If you don‘t want to walk yourself to Innergschlöß, you can go with the Gschlösser panorama train (group registration at Mario Steiner, tel. +43 664 9319512) or taking the hut taxi to the Venedigerhaus. Family Resinger, tel. +43 4875 8820. There are plenty of rest stops: Matreier Tauernhaus, Berghaus Außergschlöß and the Venedigerhaus Innergschlöß. Kids - Highlight – Wichtelpark Sillian / Hochpustertal Gnome park Sillian – with big adventure playground – high wire park – minigolf – gnome train and much more ... What can you expect from a park with this name? Correct – that your own “imps” will feel great. The word “Wichtel”, for all those who don’t know, denotes munchkin, imp or brownie. In this context it is intended for children, for whom Wichtelpark Sillian really does offer a lot. Certainly everything that a children’s heart craves. And it can even be said that enthusiastic parents too find Wichtelpark just as “cool” as their beloved little ones. Wichtelpark Sillian’s location is certainly no accident. Especially since Hochpustertal is described as the most family114

friendly valley in Osttirol. The motto in Wichtelpark is precisely set up with this fact in mind – “Berge für Zwerge”. Children have their own bit of Osttirol here. And children have a park, where they can just be children. Opening times: May-Oct. daily from 9:0020:00 | Access to the park is free!

Water experience path Umballfälle Prägraten a. G. The new Natur-Kraft-Weg path shows the force and beauty of the Isel river in form of spectacular plattforms. The hike along the water-experience-trail lasts approx 2-3 hours with an altitude difference of 240m. Equipment: weatherproof clothing, sturdy shoes. Difficulty: light Wassermythos Ochsenlacke St. Jakob i. Def. New play- and excursion-area at 2350m sea level. At the lake Ochsenlake, near the Mooseralm in the hiking region Skizentrum St. Jakob in Defereggen, there is a new destination goal for families.
