Welcome to a Little Piece of Paradise Great Golf and Good Times

T

here can be little argument that when it comes to tradition, variety, quality and pure enjoyment of the game of golf, there is no place quite like South Carolina’s Grand Strand. Here golf is not a recreational sport. It’s a way of life. The 80-mile coastal area that stretches from Pawleys Island to the southern shores of N.C., represents somewhat of a golf phenomenon. With a milder climate, attractive golf packages, and a high concentration of award winning golf courses, most will agree that it just doesn’t get much better. The area offers year-round events and activities to delight both young and old. From water sports to amusement parks, live music to comedy shows, the greatest challenge will be finding enough time to do everything on your list! Golf Insider’s goal is to help you narrow down that list to the best of the best by offering a comprehensive source of information on outstanding golf, dining, accommodations, real estate and so much more. We hope you have a memorable and enjoyable vacation and we look forward to having you return year after year. Welcome to Myrtle Beach!

This course has 18 unique holes, stunning visuals, as well as isolated teeing areas. It features wide, bowled-in fairways encircled with waste bunkering. Water comes into play on many of the holes, but aside from the epic carry on the 12th, can be avoided by most golfers. The greens are Emerald bermuda grass and the fairways are 419 Bermuda. While landing areas and greens are generous, the course does require golfers to think their way around all 18 holes, remaining true to Nicklaus’ belief that golf “is a game of precision as well as power.” The front nine features tree-lined fairways and beautiful lakes, while the back nine delivers spectacular views of the salt marsh from six different holes. The TifEagle hybrid bermuda greens offer subtle contours and run-offs typical of a Jack Nicklaus design. Measuring 7,026 yards from the “Golden Bear” tees, the course does however offer five sets of tee boxes. W

hen the International Club opened its course in 2000 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, it truly delighted those who love the game of golf and it quickly earned a reputation as one of the area’s most enjoyable, challenging, and dynamic 18 hole courses. The International Club’s golf course was designed by golf course architect, Willard Byrd. Through his design the course was given five sets of tees. As a result, the yardage for the par 72 course ranges from a fun 4,838 yards to 6,857 yards - enough to test even the best golfer’s skills. The International Club has been praised and recognized by some of the top golfing sources, and individual players alike. In fact, the International Club has received the

prestigious 4 Star rating from Golf Digest for being one of the Best Places to Play. As soon as any golfer whether novice or expert - enters onto the grounds of the golf course, the beauty and unique layout of the course becomes evident. Pines, oaks, and native grasses are scattered throughout the course sometimes lining the fairways, and sometimes protecting the greens. Lakes and ponds are pristine, but also encourage an accurate shot. Sparkling white bunkers create an aesthetically pleasing contrast to the well-maintained greens and rolling fairways. The International Club is also know for having some of the fastest greens on the Grand Strand…just waiting for a 3 putt!!!

International Club

William Byrd designed this fabulous layout that is nestled among a mixture of hardwood and pine trees. This carefully manicured course is caressed by finger lakes that are fed by underground streams, while many of the holes are surrounded by pristine wetlands. Know for having exceptional greens year-round, precision is necessary to navigate past sand bunkers, water hazards, and the towering trees. Water is the primary hazard at International, coming into play on 15 holes via an assortment of tidal creeks and lakes. Wayward shots will be punished, but International is a player-friendly design. The par 3 11th is International’s signature hole and the type of challenge that motivates people to take a Myrtle Beach golf vacation.

In order to ensure that the course’s next 40 years bring as much prosperity as the first, a Jones-approved program of renovations and cosmetic improvements has been underway at Arcadian Shores in recent months. This has centered on the recent removal of some 300 trees, which has restored the playing corridors of the holes to original widths while enhancing both playability for all and the health of the turf. “Arcadian Shores is considered by many to be one of the finest premier golf layouts in Myrtle Beach,” said Jason Mitchell, Arcadian Shores’ head golf professional. “The recent tree removal has improved the putting surfaces as well as the turf conditions throughout the course.” Arcadian Shores is one of 22 Prime Times Signature Courses that can be played on the Prime Times Rewards Package. ix years and more than 25,000 golfer reviews later, the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider has become a true standard bearer for the Grand Strand golf industry. Since day one, its premise has been simple: “Myrtle Beach golf course reviews for golfers … by golfers.” And ever since, the Golf Insider has worked diligently to eliminate the fluff and cut to the chase - offering you a reliable, one-stop resource for unbiased customer feedback on the courses you play, and the ones you’re considering for your next golf getaway.

25,000 Golfer Reviews And Going Stronger Than Ever It has served as another qualified source of validation for courses that have for years enjoyed a stellar reputation with visiting golfers. Renowned designs like Dunes Golf & Beach Club (a regular at or near the top of Golf Insider’s average daily rankings) and Grande Dunes Resort Club (with rankings consistently at or above 8.5/10) now have a customer-driven 48

standard of excellence to go along with the trust that major organizations like the PGA of America have given these venues to host some of its most prestigious events over the years – of most recent note the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship. The Golf Insider also rewards those courses that may not have yet achieved the public acclaim of venues like Dunes Club, TPC Myrtle Beach and Grande Dunes, but consistently fit the “People’s Choice” standard of excellence. “Course conditions and ‘playability’ are important, but the customer service experience is every bit as critical to the visiting golfer and in many cases the most important element,” said Jim Maggio, editor of the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider since its inception in 2008. “Time and again, we’ve seen that aspect reflected in the high scores received by many courses whose design and aesthetics may not rate as highly as some of the area’s more renowned designs. “With Golf Insider reviewers, courses that consistently offer exceptional customer service to go along with quality course conditions and an overall pleasant experience … they’re

rewarded with high overall scores,” Maggio continued. “Many golfers weigh all our scoring categories on balance (pro shop, grill, staff experience, tee boxes, fairways, greens) and will simply ask themselves, ‘Would I want to come back?’ When that answer is “yes,” the course’s overall rank will reflect that sentiment.”

“Nobody - and no golf course - is perfect,” Zuercher added. “But when there is an open, two-way line of communication between us and the customer, it makes it much easier for us to be at our very best. For years now, the Golf Insider has been an invaluable tool for us - and our visiting golfers - in that pursuit.”

The Golf Insider has also become a daily part of many golf courses’ staff interactions with their customers. “We regularly encourage our golfers to give us feedback through this forum, and it goes way beyond trying to get folks to weigh in with good ratings,” said Bob Zuercher, general manager at Blackmoor Golf Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C. – whose more than 1,200 Golf Insider reviews lead the pack among area golf courses that receive Golf Insider reviews. “It’s even more important to us when they use it to offer constructive feedback - based on both good and not-so-good experiences - that helps us improve the customer service experience for everyone.

New MiniVerde Greens

T

idewater Golf Club will be converting all of their green complexes this summer. Current TifEagle greens will be replaced with MiniVerde greens. An extensive amount of research went in to the selection of the best ultra-dwarf Bermuda putting surfaces for the course’s unique location. The same grass is also used at East Lake Golf Club, home of the prestigious TOUR Championship, they converted in 2010 and most recently, Quail Hollow, host of the Wells Fargo Championship, they converted immediately after the 2013 Tournament. Tidewater has chosen to not use the less expensive “no till” greens replacement method, but instead will be using Spence Golf Inc. to assist in stripping and removing the existing turf plus 4 inches of organic buildup, as well as stripping and removing 3 to 4 rings of sod on the collars of the greens to restore surface drainage. The collars will be re-graded followed by the new sod instillation. The putting surfaces will receive a new 4 inch greens mix to allow optimal growth, Before they are sprigged with the new MiniVerde grass. Kris Spence, Golf Architect and Design-Builder, will provide architecture consulting and services and evaluate surface contours of existing greens and reclaim or expand hole locations, reduce excessive grade, and improve drainage. All adjustments will be done in accordance with the original design and character of the course. As with almost all courses, some of Tidewater’s greens have become smaller over time. The new greens will be expanded back to the original size and contours of the greens when it opened in 1990. With recent expansive cart path renovations, tee renovations in 2009 and now new greens, one can see that

56

Tidewater Golf Club is perfectly positioned for its 25th anniversary next year. In addition to this major greens complex transformation, Tidewater will also be addressing some internal drainage upgrades as well as continued tree work to provide optimal conditions. Archie Lemon, General Manager & Director of Golf, states that “while this is a very costly process, both in time and money, we are about providing the ultimate golf experience and these improvements will only strengthen and further solidify our position. Tidewater has one of best layouts in all of golf. The views and vistas are unrivaled in Myrtle Beach and we offer unparalleled customer service. Now with our improved playing conditions, we are excited to offer a golf experience second to none.” Tidewater will close on June 9th and re-open on Thursday, September 25th. It definitely sounds like it will be worth the wait!

Benefits of MiniVerde Greens Fast establishment without building thatch. Very rhyzometrous instead of surface spreading allowing excellent recovery from ball marks and spikes. Continues to stay green and grow in cool temperatures of winter. Better shade tolerance. Better salt tolerance. Better disease resistance and better tolerance of nematodes (due to deeper rooting). Easier to topdress due to slightly lower

density.

The Lesson Tee Sequencing your Swing

Dale Ketola, PGA Class A PGA Member Director of Instruction at Potential Golf Located at Farmstead Golf Links in Calabash, NC

M

ost amateur golfers have the sequence in their swing all wrong. They put out a lot of effort and get nothing in return. The problem I see most often is golfers who take it back rather quickly and when they get to the top of their swing they step on the gas as fast as possible, causing their arms to dominate the downswing and their body to become passive. By the time they reach the ball they are already slowing down, their body is passive, and the arms and hands are swinging the club violently. This results in some major problems. The first problem is a loss of speed and power. The second issue is a swing path that cuts violently across the ball from out to in causing weak shots and slices. Proper sequencing in the golf swing is kind of like how a car shifts gears. In order! A car must start in neutral, then go to 1st gear, then 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, and finally 5th. So when should you be in each gear in your swing? Here is the recipe.

Address: Neutral Back swing: 1st gear Top of swing: 1st gear Transition: 2nd gear Halfway down: 3rd gear Impact: 4th gear Post Impact: 5th gear

From post impact to finish: 5,4,3,2,1, park. Starting the backswing slower (1st gear), and transitioning slowly coming down allows the body to start to move first on the downswing and it will allow the club to follow. Most amateurs try and get into 5th gear in the transition at the top. This throws the whole sequence into a tailspin and the golf ball will not cooperate. The use of the Orange Whip trainer helps feel a slow acceleration into the ball.

Y

Golf & Vacation in Myrtle Beach Alot of Great Choices !

ou have come to a great place to enjoy your friends and family --- whether it be a Golf Vacation or a trip to the Beach, or to see a Show, or to go Shopping. Myrtle Beach has alot of choices, so do a little research and make the most of your time. We are glad you’ve come to join us! There are many great golf courses here, and there are courses to fit every budget. “As the General Manager at Sandpiper Bay, I am a bit partial to the experience we can give you here, but call around, ask your server or bartender, or listen to the banter at a nearby table of golfers,” stated Tim Tilma. Sandpiper Bay has alot to offer, as it is a very playable Dan Maples design, not too hard, but not too easy, with a variety of hole layouts among the 27 hole facility. The Sand nine holes is a par 35 with three par 3s , the Piper is par 36 with three par 3s and three par 5s ( lots of chances for birdies ). and the Bay is par 36 with beautiful lake features on many holes, but without many forced carries. The real attraction at Sandpiper however, are the MiniVerde greens that were installed in 2008, 2009 and 2010. MiniVerde has become known as one of the best of the new ultradwarf bermudas that have become so popular in the South. After the greens conversion was completed and several other updates to the golf courses, Sandpiper was named the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course of the Year in 2010. The quality of the operation continues today, and 62

is known around the Beach as one of the best values in town. Another great feature at the 27 hole Sandpiper Club is having a third nine holes available for that extra nine hole replay, and which is sometimes available in the morning for nine holes also. Along with great layouts, great greens and great customer service, Sandpiper is committed to growing the game. Certified PGA Head Golf Professional Brett Thomaswick and his staff offer Mens and Ladies Clinics to Members and Non Members, and the Club has a great practice facility with a large putting green, a chipping green and a driving range with measured targets. At Sandpiper, it is all about the fun of the game, as Membership programs allow Residents and Non- Residents get involved with groups whose goal is to have a good time. Clubhouse activities like a January Icicle indoor putt putt event and monthly Birthday Parties get everyone involved --- golfers and nongolfers. Vacationers love Sandpiper also, as the location on Hwy 179 is close to great lodging on Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, across the street at Sea Trail, or right on property at Sunset Villas. Besides Sandpiper, there are numerous other great golf courses like Rivers Edge, The Pearl, Thistle, and the Sea Trail complex all very close by. So give Sandpiper Bay a call, 910-5799120 or 800-356-5827. Put us on your list to visit and play, and most of all, ENJOY your time in Myrtle Beach !

Wicked Tuna

The Best Grand Strand Bars for Golfers

F

or as much as the Grand Strand’s golf scene is a niche all its own, there’s only so many hours in the day where a round is possible. Plus, if those 18 or 36 holes weren’t so kind, finding a way to improve your day on the links after the fact never hurts, either. Below are some favorite watering holes worthy of your coin. Without catering specifically to golfers, they’ve already earned more than their fair share. And for good reason. SOUTH END Wicked Tuna, Murrells Inlet Non-fans of seafood can be scared away by Wicked Tuna’s name. Don’t be. With a wide selection of food that includes plenty of stuff from dry land, getting some good eats while knocking back a few drinks is easy. As far as beverages go, Wicked Tuna’s bar scene is a touch nicer than that of some of its neighboring establishments.

NEARBY COURSES: Willbrook Plantation, Blackmoor, Litchfield Country Club CENTRAL STRAND Handley’s Pub and Grub, Carolina Forest There are out-of-town golfers who have made Myrtle Beach their destination of choice for more than a decade who have never heard of Handley’s Pub and Grub. Tucked away between a car wash and an accountant’s office in Carolina Forest, Handley’s is one of the original bars in Carolina Forest. Not shocking to locals, it’s still going strong, too. The Scottish owners have turned the venue into a perfect mix of quality and quantity beer sales. Few joints on the Grand Strand have a comparable craft beer selection, and even fewer can boast the age range of its regulars. A 75-year old retiree may be bellied up at the bar next to a college kid.

NORTH STRAND The Deck at House of Blues, North Myrtle Beach Eliminate the primary music venue from House of Blues and the parking lot might still be packed every weekend. The Deck has become a destination all its own for those looking for music - it is a regular stop for some local and regional touring bands - without the accompanying hustle necessary to see some top-end shows.

On top of that, there’s no cover for those heading to the deck. Most weeks, the venue is only open on the weekends. But it could still serve as the perfect “last night out” during a multi-day golf trip.
