Tournaments... the why, how and where. One might wonder why the average golfer would be interested in tournament play. If so, how do you prepare and what tournament is best for you? Participating in tournaments can be beneficial for several reasons. Naturally networking and entertainment can be a determining factor, but it can actually improve your game and make you a more versatile golfer. Tournament play is a completely different animal than playing with your regular Sunday golf group. First there is the increased pressure. When you play the same course each week with the same group, you generally shoot the same score. If you miss a putt it may cost you some “skin” money or a beverage of choice, but you’ll get another chance next week. Tournament play on the other hand is much different. Instead of three players trying to beat you, there are potentially hundreds of players all trying to do the same thing -- WIN. Golf is a mental game to some degree. However, the mindset during a tournment changes drastically. Stay focused on moving Your Golf Insider Staff: forward and don’t let mistakes get the best of you. Thinking about your upcoming shot and how Alicia Todd to execute it should be your ultimate goal, not Brad Greenstein what went wrong with a previous swing. Tawnya Sherer When preparing for a tournament, there are a Robert Harper, PGA few things that will help you perform your best. Get to know the course ahead of time, with a practice round a day or two before the Visit on-line and rate tournament starts. Get plenty of rest and eat your most recent round. correctly before you play, since walking 18 holes can translate to three to five miles. Bring healthy snacks to keep you going during the course of your round and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially in the mid-summer heat we experience in Myrtle Beach. There are numerous tournaments from which to choose. Take into consideration, cost, location, format of play and the level of golfer the tournament attracts. New to the tournament experience? Look for fun tournaments like the Family Golf Week tournaments, including the National Father & Son Team Classic, Mother and Daughter Team Classic, and the Father and Daughter Team Classic all of which take place along the Grand Strand, these tournaments attract golfers of all levels. Experience the tournament atmosphere and always enjoy the game. Sincerely,

s an eighth grader, we are rarely asked to write for a golf publication, however I consider it a great privilege to introduce to you Mrs. South Carolina 2014, Meredith Kirk. After recently having the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Mrs. Kirk for a school project, I must say that South Carolinians should be proud to be represented by someone as committed to her state, community and the game she is so passionate about. Meredith Kirk is not only Mrs. South Carolina 2014, she is also a renowned LPGA Pro, as well as the founder of the Junior Golf Exchange organization. The Junior Golf Exchange is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide junior golfers ages 14 and under with golf equipment at no cost. Through the Junior Golf Exchange program, a child can receive fitted golf clubs at no cost, with zero eligibility requirements to participate. This is her personal campaign to “grow the game”. Meredith know that golf is the game of a lifetime and every child should have the opportunity to participate in the sport without the high cost of initial investments in equipment.

A note about the columnist. Taylor is an 8th grade student at St. James Middle School in Myrtle Beach, SC. She has assisted in golf tournament operations for more than three years.

So how does it work? When a child registers into the exchange, they will receive a complete golf set, fitted for their gender, height, and skill level, complete with golf bag. As a child out grows their golf clubs, they can then make an exchange at a participating golf course and upgrade to their next fitted set...at no cost, once a year... up until their 14th birthday. Families donate to the organization by bringing in old clubs, or though online monetary donations. “We can work together to make sure that every child will have access to golf equipment. Junior Golf Exchange is proud to serve every state in the nation and promote the growth of junior golf.” Meredith Kirk is a Member of the LPGA. She has been a golf instructor, coach, and junior golf coordinator for over 16 years. She believes that the issue of growth in junior golf is not the lack of programs, but the need to make golf more accessible. Meredith is also one of the ‘Most Beautiful Women in Golf 2014’ by Golf.com and ‘Best Young Instructor Under 40’ by Golf Digest. For more infortmation please visit

NEW GREENS = STRONGER TIDEWATER THAN EVER

T

idewater evokes the style and majesty of some of the game’s greatest venues, and delivers an experience that puts this course on the must-play list of all Grand Strand golfers. Tidewater is the ONLY golf course to be selected by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as the: “Best New Public Course in America” for the same year. Since its opening in early 1990, Tidewater has averaged more than three national and regional top play honors annually. A course featuring holes carved out of the Intracoastal Waterway and picturesque salt water marshes, Tidewater is unrivaled throughout the Southeast.

opened in 1990. With its recent expansive cart path renovations, tee renovations in 2009 and now Tidewater’s new greens, one can see that Tidewater Golf Club is perfectly positioned for its 25th anniversary this year.

With its 25th anniversary celebration this year, those who love Tidewater most felt the need to insure the course had remained as true to its original design and award winning reputation as possible. The most extensive aspect of Tidewater’s restoration project focused on replacing the former TifEagle greens with MiniVerde greens. An immense amount of research went in to the selection of the best ultra-dwarf Bermuda putting surfaces for Tidewater. “We are converting to the same grass used at East Lake Golf Club, home of the prestigious TOUR Championship, when they converted in 2010 and most recently, Quail Hollow, host of the Wells Fargo Championship, when they converted immediately after the 2013 Tournament”, comments Tidewater Head Golf Professional Chris Cooper. All adjustments will be done in accordance with the original design and character of the course. As with almost all courses, some of Tidewater’s greens had become smaller over time. The new greens have been expanded back to the original size and contours of Tidewater’s greens when it originally

The views and vistas are unrivaled in Myrtle Beach.”

Attention Golfers It’s Time for Spring Training! It’s that time of the year again. The latest equipment has arrived, the weather is shaping up and tee times are filling up. While the new drivers on the market are boasting maximum distance and accuracy, one must remember the engine behind that driver - your body. That’s right, the limiting factor to driving the ball farther, hitting fairways and greens might not be what’s in your bag but who is carrying your bag - you. Golf specific exercises are number one way to increase distance, improve accuracy and enjoy more golf. For the majority who just play golf or perform light exercise, age related loss of muscle mass become a major factor in the loss of flexibility and power, resulting in shorter drives and decreased accuracy year-after-year. The number one reason for golfers to give up the sport is injury. A little bit of exercise can go a long way. However, a plan comprised of specific exercises to improve your weaknesses that break down your swing and steal precious power can literally change your game. Working with a Titleist Performance Institute (”TPI”) certified medical professional gives you an inside track to just that. TPI has collected data over the years analyzing thousands of professional and amateur golfers developing an understanding of how a properly functioning body allows a player to swing a golf club in the most effective way. In addition, TPI has linked physical limitations in a player’s body to the most common swing faults. As a result, TPI has developed hundreds of golf specific exercises to reduce or eliminate these physical limitations. Through a TPI certified golf medical professional you can obtain a specific exercise program and physical assessment with treatment to improve body mechanics, strength and efficiency. Make this the year you fine tune that motor to get 20 extra yards, play pain free and enjoy the game we all love. Dry Needling Dry Needling is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study. It is a technique that is unequaled in finding and eliminating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunction that leads to pain and functional deficits. Dry Needling works by causing a micro lesion within the pathological tissue, breaking up shortened tissues and inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue; thereby, normalizing the inflammatory response and centrally mediating the pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which leads to a reduction in pain.

Based upon the feedback from many participants over the years, there is a strong consensus of the need to include daughters. Therefore, the tournament committee for the Father & Son Team Classic has announced two additional golf tournaments to be held concurrently with the Father & Son Team Classic; (1) the Father & Daughter Team Classic and (2) the Mother & Daughter Team Classic. While the three-day Father & Son Team Classic will be held July 15 – 18, 2015, the Father & Daughter and Mother & Daughter Team Classics will be held July 15 – 17, 2015 as a two-day competition. Participants for all three events will basically share the same schedule of events to include tournament registration, the Family Affair featuring Demo Alley and format of play for the first two rounds. The awards ceremony, however, will be held separately and immediately following the second round for the Father/Mother & Daughter tournament and following the third round for the Father & Son tournament. As part of their sponsorship, PGA TOUR Superstore will host the tournament registration for the 900+ players in their Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach store

“Hot” Courses for Spring 2015 The effects of the winter chill are fading away, but you’ve still got the fever. We’re here to help cure your cabin fever once and for all, with our Spring 2015 recommendations for five “hot” courses to consider for your current golf plans. The courses making this cut held high overall ratings on the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider Web site at the time of this writing, but moreover reflect the most recent positive trends and feedback we’ve received from visiting golfers and local industry experts alike. So if you’re not sure of how to round out your spring itinerary, think about factoring the following courses into the mix.

You have to be good with your sand wedge, it will make or break your score.” John (Virginia Beach, VA) 11/16/2014

The course is a bit forgiving in most places but you can find trouble if your straying. LIGHTNING fast greens, the way it should be on a good course. I had a tough time reading the greens and missed my 4-foot birdie but on the No. 1 handicap hole but that’s my mistake. I will return. No flaws at all at this course.” Timothy - 1/23/2015

The Tom Jackson Signature Course offers a little bit of everything you expect in a Lowcountry golf course: holes for big hitters and strategists; plenty of water and, somehow, seemingly more sand; immaculate fairways and pristine greens; and wildlife that includes alligators, fox squirrels and varied bird species. Everything You Want in a Nearly all of the above can be found just Lowcountry Golf Experience minutes into a round. There’s really no other way to put it. traditional, and it is followed up by a fairly straight 500-plus-yard No. 3 that gets to players with five tricky bunker locations. For most, the party really kicks into high gear on No. 4. That’s where the combination of water and sand start to play a larger role, especially for players who aren’t accustomed to the course. The front nine is capped off with a par-4, 394-yard hole that rises toward a green protected by three oversized bunkers in front and to the right and a fourth on the back side, just for good measure. The back nine kicks you off with more sand on No. 10, a green lined on three sides by water on No. 11 and a 90-degree dogleg on No. 12. This Waccamaw Golf Trail course continues its variation from hole to hole right on through to No. 18, a hole in itself that draws plenty of attention. The total package equates to 18 holes many would love to call their home course. www.mbgolfinsider.com

LPGA Tour star Natalie Gulbis recently joined renowned golf instructor Mel Sole on a visit to River Club and took a playing tour of the island green, par-3 14th. Scan this code to check out the video! UP AROUND THE BEND River Club’s finishing hole has been the topic of many post-round conversations. Some players find the 493-yard hole comes with the ultimate bragging rights for a foursome. Others find it’s the hole their buddies won’t let them forget. That’s because the final hole of this top-notch track

has delivered as many gut shots as it has glorious endings. The crescent-shaped parfive bows around a sizable and distinctive pond. Off the tee on No. 18, most players (those who aren’t playing it ultra-safe) will go over that pond into a relatively small landing area preceded by a pair of sand traps. From there, mid-wood proficient players can go after the green on the second shot while going over another portion of that pond. Make those first two shots, and the eagles may be singing. Miss either, or worse yet both, and it’s a different tune.

Natalie Gulbis also played River Club’s signature finishing hole. Scan this code to see how she did!

the longest hitters wouldn’t comEven plain if they picked up a few more

yards. If you are losing distance with your driver, especially due to slicing, following are a few tips to maximize distance. 1. Get fit properly for your driver. Of all the clubs in the bag this one is worth spending a few bucks on. With today’s technology you really can buy a few yards. Make sure you go to a reputable club fitter who has a good launch monitor and works outdoors so you can see the actual ball flight. 2. Tee the ball high. Teeing the ball higher not only makes it easier to hit, it encourages the player to approach the ball from an inside, shallow angle which makes efficient use of loft and promotes a slightly upward delivery of the club into the ball. Not all tour players swing up with the driver but most of the really long hitters do.

4. Make a full upper body wind up. It’s not just the shoulders. Get the back and chest involved too. Keeping your hands far away from your head at the top is good too. You should feel coiled and full of power. 5. Maintain your spine tilt coming down. If you do, the club will naturally approach from the inside and your head will remain to the right of the ball through impact. If your head moves laterally to the left of the ball on the downswing you will lose almost all of your power. 6. Swing freely to a full finish. The swing doesn’t stop at the ball. Allow it to continue to a full, balanced finish with your body facing the target. In fact it’s best if your upper body unwinds even more and faces left of the target at the finish. Your right shoulder should be well beyond where the ball was at address.

3. Tilt your spine a bit to the right. By so doing you’ll have the sensation that your head is slightly “behind” the ball at address and that you are “out of your own way” to start your backswing. www.mbgolfinsider.com

The Advantages to Living in a Golf Course Community

One of the most appealing types of planned communities is a golf course commu-

nity – even for those who do not play golf. These communities have much to offer, from young families just starting out to empty-nesters to retirees. The obvious attraction is the golf course itself, which can run around and/or through the subdivision. The course can offer serene views of trees, green space, and water. The openness of the course and its landscaping give residents beautiful sights and in most cases, fresher air. For those who enjoy the game of golf, community residents often receive discounts or incentives to use and or belong to their neighborhood course. Quite often, driving to the golf courses can add a great deal of time to the golfer’s day. However having one that is just around the corner is very convenient and a time saver. Along with the golf course, these communities tend to have much to offer, including clubhouses, fitness/wellness centers, pools, tennis court, basketball courts, playgrounds, walking paths, ponds, planned activities for residents, and more. While the common grounds of golf course communities are usually as immaculately kept as the course itself. Being a community built around a sport, those living within tend to have a more active and healthier lifestyle. There is also the sense of prestige attached to living in a golf course community. Golf course communities are not for everyone. Many times, they call for higher monthly and/or annual dues. Homes, especially those that back up directly to the golf course, may have strict deed restrictions and home owner’s association rules that must be obeyed. Those that back up to the course could have spectacular views, but could also have to deal with poorly shot golf balls, course noise, and a lack of privacy during the warm weather months, depending on which portion of the course the home borders. Each prospective buyer should sit down with their REALTOR – an area expert who can help the buyers with the weighing of the pros and cons. For a great many buyers, the pros will far outweigh any cons, making the move into a golf course community one of the more enjoyable life choices they undertake. Kind Regards,

Paige Bird,

Brandt Snedeker Proves Your Wife’s Point; You May Not Need Those New Clubs

M

aybe your wife is right. You may not need those shiny new clubs. Brandt Snedeker didn’t… By now, you know that Snedeker cruised to victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. By now you also know it was his second win at the event and that it secured him a spot in the Masters a few weeks from now.

Snedeker says, “I don’t like changing equipment,” “I like to keep the variables to a minimum, so I know that it’s me that’s messing up and not the clubs. It works better that way.” I guess not — and I guess it does. For ha-ha’s, Mike Johnson, Senior Editor of Equipment at Golf World, looked into what the trade-in value would be on Sneds sticks and found a trip to the local pro shop to trade them in would net the seven-time PGA Tour winner a whopping $34.

What you may not know is that Sneds did all this using clubs that you’re 23-handicap buddy probably still has in his bag. Put aside the fact that his irons are “well-used” and Snedeker’s bag still features some genuine artifacts by today’s standards. His Odyssey White Hot XG Rossie putter was first put into play by Sneds in 2006 while he was on the Web.com Tour. His driver, ancient in this era of 94
