EDITORIAL: MAKING SENSE OF IT ALL

By Dr. Kumar Patel GDA Editor

“This is where my motivation comes from. Do we want others to decide how we deliver care? Do we want others to decide what is in the best interest of our patients and our practices?” DR. KUMAR PATEL GDA Editor Phone (770) 429-1545 drkay71@gmail.com

As I embark on this new responsibility as editor, I was asked what motivated me to be involved with “organized dentistry,” or simply with advocacy. The answer is perhaps not so simple. It is hard to narrow it down to one reason. However, initially it was just my curiosity and the gracious gesture of a local periodontist Dr. Stan Halpern who invited me to a Northwestern District meeting. None of the discussion made any sense initially, but it did spark questions and I made a few good friends who have become very supportive with time. What did become clear at this and subsequent meetings is that our ability to practice and shape our practice future are the most valuable freedoms we have. Just like many of my colleagues, I became a dentist so I could be my “own boss.” Autonomy and being in control are two values I share with many of you. As I look back at my own journey, many of my personal decisions were based on these two underlying values, including emigration to the United States and choosing prosthodontics as a profession just to name few. In time, my familiarity with the issues governing our profession has grown. Our license and philosophy of patient care is subject to restrictions, limitations, and to a point is not entirely in our control. Practicing dentistry is a privilege we all earned but is extended to us under an umbrella of our dental practice act, healthcare system, and series of regulations. I soon discovered the GDA's and ADA's engagement with these issues. Our ability to practice and deliver care is under constant scrutiny. Regulations and a push to expand the scope of practice for auxiliaries are more eminent now than 12 years ago when I started my practice. There are interest groups within and outside of our healthcare system that feel it is beneficial to expand scope and change the delivery structure.

Our current model of delivering patient care is changing rapidly under this pressure. Some advocates of these changes may term this as “evolution.” However, I disagree with some of these changes, if not all. This is where my motivation comes from. Do we want others to decide how we deliver care? Do we want others to decide what is in the best interest of our patients and our practices? I believe dentists must lead the effort to improve our system of oral healthcare. It is important that we work with government and other interest groups on how we “evolve” to improve oral care. We are the most qualified to talk about dentistry and are directly involved at very personal level. It is our moral obligation to preserve it, improve it, and when necessary lead the effort to meet challenges as they come forward. My experience of the ADA and GDA over the last 12 years has been a positive one. Some members of the profession may not share my view. Therefore, one can never be complacent. Change is an ongoing phenomenon. I am happy to contribute to this change while preserving what has been good and rewarding for future generations. There is lot we can work on beyond the oral care delivery system and regulations surrounding it. Our organization should become a backbone and support system for dentists at every stage of practice. We need to raise our game so tools to cope with ongoing changes are easily available for every member. So to sum it up, as Gandhi said; “Be the change you want to see.”

PR CAMPAIGN: OFF AND RUNNING

By Dr. Robin Reich GDA President Elect Co-Chair, Public Relations Committee

“Now we want to share stories of how work done by dentists changes lives for the better ... Please email Carol Galbreath at the GDA office at carol@ gadental.org."

DR. ROBIN REICH GDA President Elect Co-Chair, Public Relations Phone (770) 435-5450 robin@reichdentalcenter.com CAROL GALBREATH Senior Director, Public Relations and Media Phone (404) 636-7553 carol@gadental.org

This spring the Georgia Dental Association launched a multi-year communications program. The campaign, “Because I Saw My Dentist,” was created by the GDA as part of the Georgia Dental Association Action for Dental Health initiative to actively address barriers to oral healthcare. The GDA developed the statewide campaign to help raise the quality of oral health among all Georgians and encourage them to seek a dental home. Through research we found a staggering number of people in Georgia don’t seek oral care, even when they have dental insurance or the means to do so. The GDA aims to change that through the “Because I Saw My Dentist” campaign which showcases powerful stories of real Georgians whose lives have been changed for the better because they regularly see their dentist and have a dental home. Based on internal and external research, the “Because I Saw My Dentist” campaign launched in April 2016 to accomplish several goals. We sought to improve the oral health of all Georgians, drive Georgians to an ADA/GDA member dentist to establish a dental home, elevate perceptions of dentists as uniquely qualified and experienced to perform important procedures, increase goodwill towards dentistry and communicate the value of dentistry, and educate consumers on the role of a dentist as the leader of the dental team. We invited members to help us reach these goals, especially to educate current and prospective patients, by creating a Member Toolkit. The toolkit includes appointment reminder cards, tri-fold displays for dental offices, printable stickers for patients, web buttons for practice websites, and pre-written social media posts to share. I encourage every member to visit the GDA website to download the toolkit for free. You may have seen the other campaign support materials. The website www. becauseisawmydentist.com features compelling patient videos and materials that encourage Georgians to find a dental home through a Find-a-Dentist tool. We produced two TV and radio public service

ads featuring real Georgians, and two series of digital ads for placement on web, social media, and mobile sites. Several GDA members took part in a media tour, appearing on TV and radio programs to share oral health information. The results have been amazing! Find-adentist searches for GDA members jumped by 3.38% in May over the previous precampaign launch month. Our Facebook post "reach," or views, jumped 200%. Our news releases generated 150+ news stories, reaching a potential audience of 88,645,355 people. Long-term, in 2018, we will measure consumer behavior change, comparing attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about dental care against a pre-campaign launch consumer survey. This is only the beginning! This fall we will continue running digital ads, and will develop materials for the next part of the campaign that will run January through March 2017. These new materials will include patient testimonials, digital billboards, a refreshed website and member toolkit, and ads on retail shopping carts. The patient testimonials are where you come in! You gave us your moving patient stories for the first phase of the campaign. We have shared wonderful videos and articles about how visiting a Georgia dentist helped patients uncover medical issues they may have not identified otherwise. Now we want to share stories of how work done by dentists changes lives for the better. Has dental work helped a patient gain employment or advance their career? Did a healthy smile give someone the confidence to succeed in an area of their life that they would not have otherwise? Has a child been able to better focus in school or improve attendance after a dental issue was addressed? Please email Carol Galbreath at the GDA office at carol@ gadental.org and tell her that you have a story to share. We will take it from there! I cannot wait to see what happens next for our campaign for dentistry in Georgia!

THE

PRACTICE Thinking About Putting Your Practice Up for Sale? By BridgeWay Practice Transitions Thinking about putting your practice up for sale? Here are 5 things buyers are looking for right now. 1. SPACE Many new buyers are used to working in large dental practices with multiple providers. Typically, these practices are high volume and require the associate dentists to work out of up to three rooms at a time. When these dentists are ready to purchase their own practice, they can’t imagine how a dental practice can operate out of any less than four treatment rooms. If your practice has only three chairs, but room to add a fourth, you might consider doing that before putting your practice on the market. If your practice doesn’t have room to add a fourth, it will have a negative impact on the value of your practice and limit the number of purchasers willing to entertain it. However, a physically small practice could also be a good candidate for a merger into another, larger office nearby, depending on the lease. 2. VISIBILITY Long gone are the days when dentists wanted to be tucked away in professional buildings with no road signage. Buyers are very concerned about new patients and most feel as though it is imperative to have good visibility. If potential patients are driving by your office and have no idea you are even in there, buyers will have some concerns to work through. However, don’t run out and build out a new space down the street to gain more visibility. Just understand that it might take a little longer to find the right buyer for your practice. 3. PROCEDURES As most dentists near retirement, they begin referring more procedures out. This is a good thing to buyers! They want to make sure that not only can they do the procedures done by the selling dentist, but that there are a few that they can add to the practice. Adding procedures to the practice allows the buyer to increase revenue without having to add a single new patient to the practice. This is the kind of potential buyers can easily understand.

4. CASH FLOW What the practice owner takes home after paying all of the practice-related expenses is considered the cash flow. Although revenue is important, buyers are more concerned about what they will put in their pocket if they buy your practice. It is good to understand if your overhead is in line with industry standards or if you need to make some adjustments. Not sure what those benchmarks are? Ask a transition expert or your CPA. Keep in mind, though, most buyers will use your last tax return to determine cash flow, so this could take some time to really change. Banks will also look at the cash flow to determine how much they will lend someone to purchase your practice. Not having enough cash flow could potentially leave you having to carry a note or walking away from a good buyer. 5. LEASE If you are leasing your space, it is a good idea to have it reviewed by a real estate specialist to make sure it is fairly priced and the terms are reasonable. Most buyers are concerned about paying too much in rent and a bad lease could cause you to lose many qualified buyers. On the other hand, if your lease is coming up, it might be a good time to consider a merger. Mergers are a great way for established dentists to increase their patient base, and a great way for a seller to be able to stay on and work after the sale. If you choose to renew your lease, you might consider hiring a lease negotiator to handle it for you. You would be surprised how much more favorable the terms can be when a real estate professional is working on your behalf. Best of all, most of them don’t charge the tenant a dime! FINDING

SUCCESS

Taking the Fear Out of Debt: Financing a Practice After Student Loans By Bank of America Practice Solutions The landscape for new dentists can be quite scary. For example, the average dental student graduates with more than $240,000 in student loan debt. This amount represents an increase of more than 66% over the last decade. This debt load can jeopardize the aspiring business owner’s motivation to purchase their first dental practice. After all, is it smart to take on an additional $450,000 in practice loan debt? Let’s take a different approach to looking at debt. When a person buys a business—in this case, a dental practice—the business pays the debt, not the individual. Even though almost all dental practice loans require a personal guarantee, the borrower of the money is the actual business. ____________________________________________

By purchasing a business and allowing it to pay the practice debt first, a dentist can increase income and improve cash flow. Borrowing money is intimidating—and so is taking the leap from associate to practice owner—but the additional debt can actually be worth it in the end. ____________________________________________

Making loan payments on a new car, taking on credit card debt to pay for an expensive vacation, or even purchasing a new home can be troubling when a person is saddled with high student loan debt. Why? None of these outcomes actually make the borrower money. Borrowing money to purchase a dental practice can actually create a better cash flow position even after adding debt. Also, 100% financing to purchase a dental practice is readily available, so there is no need to invest current liquidity— and that protects the dentist’s current personal financial statement. Here’s an example: Let’s assume a dentist has been working as an associate for three years and has made an average annual salary of $150,000. The associate is now

interested in buying a practice for $450,000. Historically, this practice generates revenue of $600,000. On average, a dental practice nets 40% profit to the owner. So, in this scenario, the practice net income would be $240,000. A 10-year loan for $450,000 requires roughly $4,700 in monthly payments, or $56,400 annually. After the dental practice pays the loan, the net income to the owner is $183,600 ($240,000 original net minus the $56,400 debt payments). We can see that the associate in this example will actually increase their annual income by $33,600 even though they took on an additional $450,000 in debt. Let this way of looking at debt—and the example above —serve as motivation to fulfill your dream of owning a practice. The current student loan situation can be overwhelming, so most new dentists will graduate with a goal to pay off all of their debt as quickly as they can, and they’ll be prudent about borrowing more money. They will work as associates in practices for longer periods of time than necessary because they fear acquiring additional debt. But buying a practice could be a way to pay off the debt more quickly. By purchasing a business and allowing it to pay the practice debt first, a dentist can increase income and improve cash flow. Borrowing money is intimidating—and so is taking the leap from associate to practice owner—but the additional debt can actually be worth it in the end. When you need financing for your dental practice, you want to work with someone who understands your industry. My Impression: Providing Charitable Dental Care in Honduras by Dr. Jamie Mitchell In July, my wife Suzy, my daughter Laura, and I traveled to Honduras as part of the Frank Holston ministry team with Baptist Medical Dental International-BMDMI. BMDMI is an organization that specializes in sending short-term mission groups that are focused on providing medical and dental care to remote areas of Honduras. After a night spent at the BMDMI Mission house outside of the capital city of Tegucigalpa, we traveled to the village of Cedros where our next four days would be spent. The 60-mile trip to Cedros took about three hours in our refurbished Bluebird bus. Upon arrival, we set up sleeping, cooking, and bathing 14 • September 2016

facilities along with our spaces for medical, pharmacy, optical, dental, veterinary care, Bible school instruction, and clothes distribution at the local school. I had the pleasure of working with a fabulous Honduran dentist, Dr. Emma Mejia, who has been in private practice for 29 years and associated with this mission for more than 20 years. Over the three days we treated patients, we extracted 330 teeth from children and adults in our open-air clinic (we were outside under the overhang of a classroom roof). Suzy assisted me along with our translator Alejandro Aguilera (a fabulous young man who learned as much from me as I did from him). Our daughter Laura helped

with clothes distribution and Bible school. We broke camp on Thursday and traveled back to the mission house after a trip to the Good Shepherd Christian Academy and Bible College affiliated with BMDMI. Friday was spent seeing a little bit of the capital city and shopping. From beginning to end, we found this opportunity with BMDMI to be a blessing to our family. I am collecting items for our trip next year and for my Honduran dental friend Dr. Emma who is in need of a new cavitron, a new dental unit, and new electric handpieces. I would love to speak to you about any part of my trip or any items you may have to donate. Please email me at jamitchelldmd@bellsouth.net.

GDA Helps Sponsor Gala in Memory of Congressman Charlie Norwood On August 29, the Eastern District and GDA co-sponsored a VIP table at the Second Annual Charlie Norwood Memorial Gala held at The Foundry at Rae’s Creek in Augusta. Other VIP guests at the event included the Mayor of Augusta, Hardie Davis; State House Representative Kevin Cooke; RNC Committeewoman, Ginger Howard; Congressman Rick Allen; Congressman Buddy Carter; Congressman Tom Graves; and Congressman Lynn Westmoreland. Proceeds from the Gala, as well as from the Charlie Norwood Memorial Golf Classic, go to support the True American Principles Initiative, a Super PAC formed to continue the tradition of Dr. Norwood, and to support Harrisburg Family Healthcare, a free clinic located in Augusta with which Gloria Norwood, his widow, is closely involved. In attendance were GDA and district members Dr. Mike Vernon and his wife, Debbie Vernon; Dr. Lewis Petree; Dr. Andy Allgood; Dr. Annette Rainge; Dr. Celia Dunn; Dr. Paul Trotter; and Dr. Eric Sterrett. GDA General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs, Scott Lofranco, was also present. Congressman Norwood was an Augusta general dentist and president of the Georgia Dental Association before his successful run for national office. Dentist colleagues may remember his tussles with OSHA officials over onerous dental regulations.

Attending the Second Annual Charlie Norwood Memorial Gala in August were Dr. Eric Sterrett, Dr. Paul Trotter, Dr. Lewis Petree, Dr. Andy Allgood, Dr. Annette Rainge, Mrs. Gloria Norwood, Dr. Mike Vernon, Debbie Vernon, Congressman Buddy Carter, Dr. Celia Dunn, and Amy Carter.

Douglas B. Torbush Presidential Scholarship Awarded at DCG At the Dental College of Georgia Welcome Back Assembly on August 25, 163 scholarships totaling $464,050 were presented to DCG students. Of note among the honorees was dental student Clay Oliver, who received the inaugural Douglas B. Torbush Presidential Scholarship. This scholarship, originally called the GDA President's Scholarship, was re-named by the Board of Trustees this year in memory of GDA past president Dr. Doug Torbush. The intent is to remember and honor a great leader, professional, and friend to everyone with the Georgia Dental Association. The scholarship was presented by Debbie Torbush and the Torbush's daughter Katherine. Kudos to all of the students who received scholarships, and to the many GDA members who funded and presented scholarships at the event. September 2016 • 15

SEEN&HEARD Your Money or Your Personal Health Information: New Federal Guidance on Ransomware by Jocelyn Samuels, Director, Office for Civil Rights To help healthcare entities better understand and respond to the threat of ransomware, the U.S. Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights has released new HIPAA guidance. One of the biggest current threats to health information privacy is the serious compromise of the integrity and availability of data caused by malicious cyber-attacks on electronic health information systems, such as through ransomware. The FBI has reported an increase in ransomware attacks and media have reported a number of ransomware attacks on hospitals. To help healthcare entities better understand and respond to the threat of ransomware, the HHS Office for Civil Rights has released new Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidance on ransomware. The new guidance reinforces activities required by HIPAA that can help organizations prevent, detect, contain, and respond to threats, including: • Conducting a risk analysis to identify threats and vulnerabilities to electronic protected health information (ePHI) and establishing a plan to mitigate or remediate identified risks; • Implementing procedures to safeguard against malicious software; • Training authorized users on detecting malicious software and reporting detections; • Limiting access to ePHI to only those persons or software programs requiring access; and •Maintaining a contingency plan that includes disaster recovery, emergency operations, frequent data backups, and test restorations. Other topics covered in the guidance include: understanding ransomware and how it works; spotting the signs of ransomware; 16 • September 2016

implementing security incident responses; mitigating the consequences of ransomware; and the importance of contingency planning and data backup. The guidance makes clear that a ransomware attack usually results in a “breach” of healthcare information under the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule. Under the Rule, and as noted in the guidance, entities experiencing a breach of unsecure PHI must notify individuals whose information is involved in the breach, HHS, and, in some cases, the media, unless the entity can demonstrate (and document) that there is a “low probability” that the information was compromised. Ransomware is a type of malware (malicious software) that encrypts data with a key known only to the hacker and makes the data inaccessible to authorized users. After the data is encrypted, the hacker demands that authorized users pay a ransom (usually in a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin to maintain anonymity) in order to obtain a key to decrypt the data. Ransomware frequently infects devices and systems through spam, phishing messages, websites, and email attachments and enters the computer when a user clicks on the malicious link or opens the attachment. Organizations need to take steps to safeguard their data from ransomware attacks. HIPAA covered entities and business associates are required to develop and implement security incident procedures and response and reporting processes that are reasonable and appropriate to respond to malware and other security incidents. The guidance can be found at: http://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/ RansomwareFactSheet.pdf.

Dentists Can Help Combat Opioid Epidemic with a PDMP Registration Nationally, the opioid epidemic has reached crisis proportions. The Medical Association of Georgia, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other groups are working to educate Georgia patients and clinicians on the risks and use of opioid medications. Dentists can do their part by registering for the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). The PDMP is maintained by the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency and allows enrolled healthcare providers to view a year-long history of a patient's filled prescriptions for controlled substances. (Routine medications, such as those for blood pressure, diabetes, and gastrointestinal issues, are not recorded here.) The PDMP is free and simply requires enrollment on the Georgia Drug Narcotic Agency website (gdna.georgia.gov) on the part of a dentist. Once registered, a dentist or dental hygienist can check the website if there is concern about a patient's prescription history. Please keep in mind that a dentist or dental hygienist must only check the website for patients of record, and the information that is obtained via the website must be kept confidential. It is imperative that users maintain the confidentiality of all data and adhere to all legal requirements associated with utilizing the PDMP.

Every pharmacist who fills a prescription in Georgia for a controlled substance must enter certain details into the PDMP when the prescription is filled. That data includes a patient's name, date of

birth, address, prescribing clinician, drug, dosage, date prescribed, and date filled. Unless he or she dispenses medication, a dentist does not need to enter prescription information into the system.

ADPAC in Action The American Dental Association Political Action Committee (ADPAC) tapped GDA President Dr. Ben Jernigan (at left) and GDA Director of Government Affairs Scott Lofranco to deliver an ADPAC check to Senator Johnny Isakson (at right) in July at one of the senator's district offices in Atlanta. Senator Isakson is running for his third six-year term in 2016.

How the 2016 Election Could Affect Health Care According to a recent study from Gallup, 15 percent of Americans say health care costs are their family’s top financial concern—making health care a hot topic on the 2016 campaign trail. The 2016 presidential election could bring significant changes to the U.S. health care system. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have both campaigned on promises to control health care spending and reduce out-of-pocket expenses for consumers. The chart at left provides a brief overview of each candidate’s health care platform, so you can better understand how Clinton or Trump may affect the employee benefits landscape if elected into office. Like any election, how and if these platforms would be achieved once one of the candidates is in office remains to be seen. By being aware of where each candidate stands, though, you can better understand how this election could impact the employee benefits industry and prepare your business for any potential changes. Welcome to Our New District and GDA Alliance Presidents At the recent GDA Convention & Expo, we welcomed new presidents for the seven GDA districts and the Georgia Dental Association Alliance dental spouses organization. Upon taking office, they accepted the challenge of helping their respective organizations achieve its goals and further the profession of dentistry. We thank all of these leaders for their dedication in the year ahead, and can't wait for you to meet them! Here they are in their own words. Thanks to Laura Kuechenmeister for interviewing our presidents and preparing this article.

Central District Dr. Jamie Mitchell At Home: I’ve been married to my college sweetheart, Suzy, for 28 years. We have two children: Matthew, who is graduating from Presbyterian College, and Laura, who just graduated from high school and will be attending Mercer University. At Leisure: Getting a dog was the best thing we ever did. Pip can sit up, roll over, and give high fives. We love to play fetch! At Work: I purchased my practice in 1990 right out of dental school from Dr. Tom Brady; it’s been in existence since 1962. For six years, Dr. Brady stayed and mentored me, filling in gaps where dental school didn’t teach. He retired at age 96, and I’ve been in practice by myself for the past 21 years. Organized Dentistry: I’ve always been a member of the ADA, GDA, and local district since I began practicing. When my family was young, that was my priority, but now, Dr. Ty Ivey suggested that I become involved to voice my opinions. I think dentistry is always changing, and we need to stop being on the sidelines and get in the game to change things or keep dentistry as we want it. The District: We have a great district. It’s relatively small with 230 members, but the leadership is very strong, motivated, and cohesive. The leadership is extraordinary, and we have a ton of involvement. Our

members have fantastic attendance at LAW Days, and are always well-represented. The Year: I want to get more of the district involved. Even though we have great leaders, we’re fairly spread out, running from Dublin to Griffin towards Cordele. There are a lot of miles between our dentists, so I’m working with our Executive Council to come up with ideas to bring new members in and engage more of our current members. I’m a perfect example—I’ve been on an island by myself. It’s easy to remain on your island and not get involved, go to functions, or hear what’s going on in dentistry. If we can succeed in having more members be involved through programs we may be able to establish, I would consider it a successful year.

Eastern District Dr. Lewis Petree At Home: Ellen, my wife, and I recently celebrated our 25-year anniversary. Our children, Holden and Margaret, are students at the University of Georgia and members of the Redcoat band. We also have two dogs. At Leisure: Our family loves to spend time at Lake Hartwell, and we spend a lot of our time in the outdoors, hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking. At Work: After dental school and a GPR program at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, I returned home to Winder and joined the practice of Drs. John Stansell, Doyle Strickland, and Robert Stansell. I am still in practice with Dr. Robert Stansell, and we were recently joined by Dr. Mark Ferdos. I have been in practice in Winder for more than 27 years. Volunteerism: I have been active with Boy Scout Troop 700 since 2001, and have mentored nine Eagle Scouts (so far). I also volunteer with the Mercy Health Clinic in Athens on a quarterly basis. While participating in my first GMOM in Perry, I made it a family event, and now my daughter wants to go to dental school!

Organized Dentistry: I’ve always been a member of GDA and the Eastern District. I’ve participated in several LAW Days, and I am also a Contact Dentist. Now that my kids are in college, I am finding time for more GDA events. I enjoy the political process and feel it’s important to have a say in the way I am allowed to practice. It’s our job to educate legislators to protect our profession and patients. The District: The best thing about my district is our dental school—of course, I graduated from the MCG School of Dentistry! The Year: Amelia Island is always a nice destination, and I certainly look forward to our annual convention next summer.

Northern District Dr. Ryan Vaughn At Home: My wife, Julie, is the president of the Alliance, and we have four children: Madeleine, Elijah, Scarlett, and Piper. We also have two dogs, Lily and Lola. I grew up in Delaware, but moved to Georgia in high school. My brother is also a GDA dentist. At Work: I’m a pediatric dentist, and have two offices, in Gainesville and Flowery Branch. My goal is to teach patients to take better care of themselves when they’re kids, so they’re better patients when they’re older. I’ve been in practice for seven years. My Mentor: My childhood dentist got me into dentistry. His name is Phil Conaty, and he is the former president of the association in Delaware. Organized Dentistry: Dr. Heather McGee asked me to become involved in an event, and I started attending Executive Council meetings.

PRESIDENTS

Continued from page 21 The District: The best thing about our district is that we have a lot of diverse opinions, so we get a lot of different perspectives on each issue. The Year: I’m looking forward to everything. I’m not sure I can single out one event. We had a successful Gala for Smiles in August and that is just the start.

Northwestern District Dr. David Drew At Home: Monicha and I met at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and recently celebrated our 25th anniversary of practicing in Carrollton. We have a son who graduated from UGA in May and then started veterinary school, and a daughter who is a junior at UGA majoring in International Affairs and Global Health. At Leisure: I enjoy tennis, travel, saltwater fishing, and boating. At Work: In 1990, we purchased the practice of Dr. Alvin Crews, inheriting a wonderful patient family and excellent dental team. Southern Dental's growth through the years has allowed for the addition of Dr. Tammy Williams, who has been a partner for the last 12 years. Our team enjoys delivering comprehensive care with emphasis on implants, cosmetic dentistry, and root canal therapy. Volunteerism: I have been fortunate to travel throughout Central America on several mission trips through the years. Most recently, we worked with an incredible program in Nicaragua caring for those in extremely remote villages. These trips are very helpful to the villagers, yet always seem to put life in proper focus for me. 22 • September 2016

Organized Dentistry: Having served as ASDA president in dental school, I immediately became involved with the GDA once out of school. Dr. Crews, as well as Dr. Jeff Lindsey and Dr. Howard Jones have been great mentors through my early years of involvement. I believe it is important to stay plugged in to organized dentistry to keep your finger on the pulse of our profession. The District: We have a great crop of young leaders with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Everyone is prepared, well organized, and is always keeping the district moving forward. Our legislative fish fry in December is our biggest event and gives us a chance to meet socially with our senators and representatives. The Year: I look forward to the challenges that await as our district has been and will remain very active and involved in all facets of the GDA. The leadership, excitement, and professionalism of our new GDA staff is infectious. We’re standing on the shoulders of the volunteer dentists who served before us and hope we can live up to and build upon their achievements.

Southeastern District Dr. Steven Berwitz At Home: My wife, Anna, and I have two boys; Eli is seven, and Zac turned 3 in April! I’m originally from New Jersey, born and raised, but I love Savannah—it’s beautiful, and very laid back, much different from where I’m from. At Leisure: Spending time with my family is the key. I also like to fish and cook. At Work: I’m a general restorative dentist, and see all

types of patients. I purchased this practice six years ago, and also see trauma patients at our local Level 1 Trauma Center. My father was a dentist, and I started working in his office when I was about seven, and continued in various dental labs prior to going to dental school. My father practiced for four decades, and was a role model and mentor for me throughout my career. Volunteerism: I’m on the Board of the Savannah Jewish Federation, and my wife is on the Board of the Matthew Reardon Center. We help highly autistic and special needs adult patients who need dental care but can’t be treated in a conventional setting. Organized Dentistry: I was involved in organized dentistry in New Jersey, even in dental school. Originally, I was secretary of the district, and I’ve learned so much as president elect. It’s been such an eye-opener to what goes on in dentistry and legislation. The District: We have a core group of people who always show up to the meetings and are highly involved in the process. They have a true passion for dentistry, and that’s refreshing to see. The Year: I’m looking forward to engaging our membership and developing more outreach to the members throughout our district. There’s a lot of potential here.

Southwestern District Dr. Jeff Cox At Home: My wife, Bebe, and I are empty nesters; our daughters, Hailey and Sarah, are grown. We share our house with our dog, Lillie.

At Leisure: I enjoy golf, bird hunting, grilling, and spending time with my family. At Work: I graduated from dental school in 1984 and have been in practice in Nashville since 1985. Nashville is a small town in south Georgia, and my general practice treats people from age 2 to 102. Volunteerism: I’ve been involved with the Georgia Mission of Mercy and been a Rotary Club member for 27 years. Organized Dentistry: I successfully avoided being in the officer chain for 30 years, but with a push from a former classmate, I agreed to be more involved. I believe that participation in a strong ADA and GDA is important; without these organizations, dentistry could become like medicine, and we will become employees of insurance companies. The District: Geographically, we are the largest in the state, but I feel like when we get together, it’s like a reunion. We all support each other. The Year: I’m most looking forward to enjoying being a grandfather!

Western District Dr. Rene Roberts At Home: I’ve been married for 15 years to my husband, John, and we have an 11-year-old son, Sean, who is our life. We also have a 15-year-old toy poodle and a cat. I’ve been in Columbus my whole life, except for schooling, and after I graduated, I wanted to be with my family. At Leisure: Mostly, I watch Sean play baseball! I also love to read fiction and play tennis.

At Work: I’ve been in practice for myself for 14 years, and was an associate before that for five years. I’ve been really happy in my practice, and have a great group: two hygienists who have been with me for five and 10 years, a receptionist here for 10 years, and two assistants, one who has been with me for 14 years. When I was younger, I had a friend who worked in a dental office here, and I got to see what he did. I love that I get to help people and make them happy. Volunteerism: I’m on the advisory board of the dental hygiene and assisting departments at Columbus Technical College. Organized Dentistry: In our district, I consider Dr. Jim Lopez my mentor. He’s on top of things with organized dentistry. I wanted to become involved to make a difference, and to be a part of what makes our profession great. The District: We’re a small district, so we know each other pretty well. Recently, an indigent care program we had ended due to lack of funding, but I’m excited that a local doctor is expanding his practice to include indigent care and planning for the Western District to become involved. We’re such a close-knit group that we can work together very well.

At Work: I work at the office and help with marketing and some of the business side of the practice. I’ve been involved with the Alliance for several years, and enjoy the camaraderie. I co-chaired our luncheon at the Hinman this year, and have been involved with Hinman committees for several years. I also chaired the hospitality/ food service area for all volunteers and patients at GMOM, which was incredibly rewarding. It was an amazing opportunity to see the dental profession reaching out to serve the dental needs of the people in our state. Volunteerism: I’ve always been involved with a lot of different philanthropic activities. I’m on the Board of Trustees for Young Harris College, and the board of the Gwinnett Hospital Foundation. I’ve also been very involved in the Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett, which opened a new dental clinic in June, and Clayton and I have worked to raise the funds necessary. Organized Dentistry: I’ve been a member for years but had not really been active, and

felt like it was my time to be able to help in a leadership position. The Alliance is an opportunity to get to know the dentists around the state, who are incredible people. I had a chance to go to the national convention last year in Washington, DC, and it was exciting to see how the states around the country are organized. Georgia has the largest and most organized Alliance group in the U.S., and I’m looking forward to coming up with new opportunities for outreach. The Alliance: It’s an amazing opportunity for spouses to support each other and a chance to bond with friends. It’s also a wonderful organization for educational and volunteer activities. We need more members! The Year: I’m hoping to hold bi-monthly activities around the state where we can gather members for social activities and opportunities to expand our outreach. Our holiday party is always fun, and I love seeing other Alliance members at the Annual Convention. We will also hold an event for dental students and their spouses at the Dental College of Georgia next spring.

The Year: I do love the annual meeting! It’s a wonderful place to see my old classmates, meet new colleagues, and be more involved in organized dentistry. I’m looking forward to leading our district to become even more involved in GDA activities.

Alliance of the GDA Julia Davis At Home: Dr. Clayton Davis and I have three children. Kathleen, our oldest, is a nurse practitioner with the Emory Cardiac Group. Alex works for Ernst & Young in Atlanta, and Piper works for Turner Broadcasting. We live in Duluth, and I was born in Lawrenceville. At Leisure: We love to travel. My favorite country is Scotland, and the Isle of Skye is my favorite place. I also enjoy hiking, walking, and running, and spending time with my family and menagerie of animals. My husband and I also teach an adult Sunday school class at Sugarloaf United Methodist.

Business & Elections Thank you to the delegates, alternate delegates, speakers, and guests who attended the Summer House of Delegates meeting on July 14. All districts held caucus breakfasts prior to the event, with attendees starting their morning's work at 7 a.m. After some initial business, including a group photo that you can see below, the House heard from several invited state legislators, including Rep. Matt Hatchett (the son of the late Dr. Thomas Hatchett), Rep. Lee Hawkins (a GDA past president), Rep. Michele Henson, and Rep. Butch Parrish. The legislators discussed the 2016 session and shared ideas on what they thought would be up for debate in 2017, including Medicaid and scope of practice. After the legislative panel, Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Dr. Bruce Camp and GADPAC Chairman Dr. Richard Weinman

honored Rep. Hatchett as the GDA Legislator of the Year. ADA Fifth District Trustee Dr. Red Stevens shared national news on membership trends and gave Dr. Tom Broderick a plaque for his service as GDA president. GDA Honors Dr. Carole Hanes with Distinguished Award of Merit By Michael Vernon, DMD I am honored to present* an award that is the highest honor that the GDA can bestow on a member—the Georgia Dental Association Award of Merit. We have approximately 3,200 members. Using the 80/20 rule about 600 of our members are active and do the yeoman’s work of the association. Then there are a handful of our members that actively know the importance of the organization, go the extra mile or two, and spend countless hours in service for all of us. Carole Hanes is one of those people. Carole was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland; went to undergraduate school at Vanderbilt University, then graduated Cum Laude from the University of Louisville with a degree in Dental Hygiene. After a couple of years she continued on at Louisville and earned her DMD degree. Phil and Carole met at the dental school in Jackson, Mississippi, when Carole came to interview for Phil’s job. Their time there overlapped about a month until Phil left to start his residency in Rochester, New York. They continued a long-term relationship until Carole started in the pediatric dentistry program in Rochester at the Eastman Dental Center. They finished their residencies at the same time and moved back to Jackson. There, they were both recruited to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta by Jud Hickey. Carole is a Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at MCG, now Augusta University, and has been the Associate Dean for Students, Admissions, and Alumni since 2000. This last role is the one that has been so important to the GDA, dental school students, and practicing dentists alike. I would like to read a few of the statements made by some of the dentists that nominated Carole for this award. The number of letters supporting her nomination for this award were the largest number ever received for an Award of Merit candidate: Shown at left: Dr. Tom Broderick, Dr. Carole Hanes, and Dr. Michael Vernon.

"Carole Hanes remains the strongest of advocates of our profession, our association, and the individual members that our organization represents. After many years she continues to pursue the ideals, practices, and advancement of dentistry. [W]e have been honored and privileged to have her as an ambassador." “This letter of support is very easy as well as very hard in the sense that there are not enough words to describe her energetic spirit and dependability.” "I understood how important it was to have an excellent relationship between the GDA and the dental school. Carole is indeed the bridge between organized dentistry, the school, and the students." "There is no better role model for our students than Carole. She is personally present with the students at GDA events and leads by example." __________________________________

"A person's roles tell a lot about them, but their character and ethics tell a much more profound story. When Carole is working on a project and making decisions, I never doubt her integrity or her intentions. She is someone who has been trusted by GDA members across the state for many years. She is a leader on a professional level as well as a personal level."

her the Judson C. Hickey Distinguished Faculty Award four times. Her involvement in organized dentistry and her continuous contact with the dental students is a tremendous factor in achieving 100% ASDA membership of the students. She is our go-to person whenever we need to involve the students in anything. She is an active Omicron Kappa Upsilon member, and a fellow in the International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy in addition to holding membership and leadership positions in pediatric dentistry organizations. Dr. Hanes is retiring this year as the Eastern District’s secretary treasurer, a position she has untiringly held for 15 years. She has been the continuity and the source of history for the Eastern District. Lately, the incorporation of the district was her job to handle and she did it with the grace and competence that we have come to expect from her. Carole, for your service to the Eastern District Dental Society and your dedication, extreme drive, and success in converting dental students into dentists and into members of the GDA, we wish to honor you with this Georgia Dental Association Award of Merit. *This article is excerpted from the speech Dr. Vernon gave on July 17 at the Awards & Installation Breakfast honoring Dr. Hanes for her association volunteer service.

LASTWORD This column is for commentaries and letters shared by members or shared about members. To submit an article, email Delaine Hall at delaine@gadental.org. This month, the development director of a charitable medical clinic in Western District shares thanks for the work members have done to start a much-needed dental component. _________________________________

Western District Dentists Help Lift Dental Clinic Off Ground by Billy Holbrook, Director of Development, MercyMed MercyMed of Columbus is a non-profit health center with a mission to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and to demonstrate His love by providing affordable, quality primary healthcare for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the underserved of the city and surrounding community. Founded in 2012 by Dr. Grant Scarborough*, a board-certified pediatrician and internal medicine physician, MercyMed provides more than 11,000 reduced cost patient encounters per year at two locations. Patients benefit from primary care services as well as counseling, mental health support groups, vision care, ultrasounds, dermatology, orthopedics, and other specialty care services. Dr. Scarborough and the other healthcare providers noted that the vast majority of patients were also in poor oral health, but the clinic could not meet their needs without adding an oral health component. In response to demand from patients, 60% of whom are uninsured and 30% of whom are Medicaid recipients, MercyMed has more than doubled the main facility. The health center is now equipped with 13 exam rooms, a full lab, and space for counseling. One of the largest investments made in the new infrastructure was a new space for dentistry. The dental wing consists of four operatories, a wet lab, a sterilization room, and space for a Panoramic X-ray machine. While the rooms are complete, there is now an ongoing effort to fill them with essential items. The mission of MercyMed Community Dentistry is to provide affordable dental 42 • September 2016

care to the working poor and underserved. By integrating this dental clinic with a primary healthcare center geared toward serving the poor, the staff will be wellpositioned to care for the many needs of patients. MercyMed already has a track record of knocking down barriers for the working poor so that they can access muchneeded care. Introducing dentistry to the mix will change the game for our patients. Our initial focus will be pain management, extractions, and fillings, with a phase-in approach for more services. Understanding the need for good guidance and advice, MercyMed did not strike out on this effort alone. We have gathered a team of dentists from the community who make up the MercyMed Dentistry Advisory Board: • Mike Helms, DMD • John Avant, DDS • Tyler Myers, DMD (pictured above) • Joseph Narde, DDS • James Lopez, DDS • Matt Keller, DMD • Phillip Tully, DMD • Reuben Moyana, DMD • Jeffrey Serff, DMD • Andrew Houston, DDS This group of generous dentists has steered the program from concept to building design to operational tasks. As Dr. Tyler Myers said, “There has been a need for affordable dental care for the underserved in our community for a long time. I look forward to seeing how MercyMed will meet that need in a unique way; caring for the whole patient, not only their oral health.”

Patients will be screened financially and charged an affordable rate. MercyMed will open with a one day a week clinic. On Fridays a rotation of dentists will see patients. In the long-term, the vision is to utilize a residency program in order to see patients on a full-time basis, or hire a full-time dentist who shares the mission of MercyMed. For now, the local dental community is committed to managing the clinic once a week to make it successful MercyMed is fortunate to have the support of hundreds in the Columbus community and surrounding area. The health center relies on investments in care from patients as well as donations from individuals, foundations, churches, and businesses. The fundraising efforts and pledges to volunteer for the dentistry program have been championed by the dental community. This is a true partnership. We could not do this without the guidance of our amazing dentist advisors. They are committed to seeing this program be successful. For more information, or to find out how you can help, contact billy@ mercymedcolumbus.com or visit www. mercymedcolumbus.com. * Dr. Scarborough co-founded Christ Community Health Services of Augusta in 2007 before moving to Columbus. He is the chair of the department of internal medicine for Mercer Medical School in Columbus and the author of Awake My Soul, which chronicles his life serving Jesus as a doctor for poor and underserved communities.
