FROM THE

BOG Chairman

I

F O U R S E A S O N S G O L F & S P O R T S C L U B C O M M U N I T Y, t is a terrific privilege and an honor to serve the Board of Governors and the Membership as Chairman of the Board of Governors in 2021! We are truly excited that we will be able to get back to some sense of normalcy this year and enjoy our Club to its fullest extent! The Board and Management this year is focusing on “Pride in belonging to a Private Club.”

One of our challenges this year is to reestablish throughout the Club a personal pride in keeping our facility as clean and pristine for all Members and their Guests. With that, we are asking all of the Members to adhere to all of the rules and regulations, in addition to being considerate of others. It’s important to remember to dispose of your trash after your round, rake your bunker, and follow the enter and exit poles when entering the fairway. It is our duty as Members to keep our product in the best condition. The Staff are in a position where they have to be the enforcers of these guidelines that puts them in an adversarial position with the Membership. We are asking all of us

to do our part as great stewards of our Club! We continue to thank all of the Members for adhering to the COVID-19 guidelines. They exist as the Four Seasons is following CDC and Lead With Care Guidelines for the benefit of the Members. The Cure for All Seasons Events, the major charity for the Four Seasons and our Club, are being planned for this year! The charity benefits the Baylor Scott & White Irving Healthcare Foundation. In the past, our Members have been incredible donors in supporting this very worthwhile cause. Throughout 2021 the Board of Governors, Club Committees and Staff, will be hosting various events to raise donations. Save the date for our Spin-A-Thon on Saturday, October 2nd. We will be announcing the other dates soon including events involving tennis, golf and food & beverage. We thank you in advance for your support of these great events and this charity! On a final note, the Board has worked very closely with Jim Kern and Ellen Frost to ensure that the Club is doing all that it can to bring the best experience and value it can to all of the Members. The survey completed back in December will also help provide the direction and actions that the Board and Club can take to continually improve the Member Experience! In fact, the recent survey resulted in many changes in the Member’s Lounge - expanded hours for happy hour and the new menu items. Please continue to bring your ideas and concerns forward to us! Here’s to a terrific spring!!

FROM THE

General Manager

De a r Fou r Se a sons G ol f

and

Sports Club Members,

ELCOME TO THE RETURN OF OUR SPRING AND SUMMER ACTIVITIES! As we all continue to recover from the recent deep freeze that swept through Texas, I want to thank you for your patience as several of the Club and Resort’s amenities had slight damage and we continue to work diligently to bring these areas back online and up to Four Seasons standard. Even with some areas temporarily out-of-service there’s no shortage of activity around the Club this Spring and into the WARMER summer months. As you read through this month’s LIFEStyle Magazine you’ll notice that we continue to expand the planned events, along with some of our great Club traditions, to look forward to with the weather improving. We are always striving to improve the Club by providing value, excitement, and FUN! There are a lot of new, value added events in the coming months and we don’t want you to miss out. Be sure to keep an eye out for messages from Kristina Karoll and the Membership Services team, as they are working hard to keep your calendars full. We would like to give a major thank you and congratulations to Anthony Williams and our Golf Course Maintenance team. This team did a fantastic job preparing both golf courses for the challenging winter this year and the results are already starting to show. Anthony has also been recognized as one of the Top 5 Golf Course Superintendents in the United States by his peers in February, and was also named the president of the North Texas GCSAA for 2021. Anthony and his team did a terrific job of getting all aspects of turf conditions in great shape so that we could have a smooth opening. Please do your part in keeping it that way by repairing divots and ball marks. Thirty seconds of work by each golfer can save serious time for the grounds crew and provide for a superior golf experience all year long. We look forward to a great 2021 season! As we continue to improve your experience at Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club, I would like to reiterate the importance of our Club rules and etiquette. These are designed to help us in our commitment to excellence. As a gentle reminder, our Four Seasons Employees are trained to uphold the policies set forth by our Board of Governors and Club Management. Please make sure you and your guests follow these policies to ensure an enjoyable experience for yourself and the entire Four Seasons Membership. We are so privileged to have so many Members and Employees who consider Four Seasons their “home away from home”. It is my hope that we will all take ownership in our Club as we are continuously upgrading and reinventing the Club to improve the experience for you and your guests. With our great camaraderie, hospitality, policies, and constant improvement, we can make Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club the best it has ever been. Should you friends or guests have an interest in joining the Club, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Club Sales team. They can walk your guests through our membership details and should they join, you will qualify for our 2021 Champions Club incentives! More details are available on the Members Only section of the website. We appreciate your support and for choosing Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club as your home. We look forward to a great 2021 and promise to strive in making your membership experience the best it can be. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all our members, employees, and families that have been impacted.

See you at the Club,

W

What a difference a year makes. Mid-March of last year, the golf and private club world were flipped upside down due to the spread of Covid-19. Despite the challenges, the game of golf has persevered

and become stronger, and more popular than it has been in the last several years. Initially, when we were able to return to golf we found a different landscape. City and County governance instituted certain By Mike Kiesling, restrictions and guidelines courses had to adhere to in order to allow Director of Golf play. Due to all of the unknown and uncertainty, golfers could not ride in carts together. At one point, only singles were allowed to play in 10-minute intervals. Even rakes, water coolers, and trash cans had to be removed from the courses. Some courses could not make scorecards, pencils, or golf tees available to players. As time went by, and more was learned about the COVID-19 these restrictions were lifted. Golf is rated as one of the safest outdoor activities by several major medical bodies.

What is next, now that the golf courses have returned to normal operational procedures, and virtually all of the amenities previously available are back in place? During the ensuing chaos when North Texas shut down there were certain behaviors golfers assumed as proper etiquette that virtually disappeared over night. We could no longer rake bunkers. We had no place to discard of our trash. There were no course marshals to manage pace of play, or remind golfers of unacceptable areas to drive their golf carts. We did not have course starters to remind players to repair their ball marks, or where to enter or exit the fairways. How do we get golfers to pair up in carts in order to minimize wear on the golf courses, who have become comfortable riding in their own cart? The quickest answer to each of these is the course marshals, starters, and professional staff need to start enforcing the rules. Which, on the surface seems like the simplest solution. However, there is a much larger and growing trend. Unfortunately, the willingness to perform the above for some is negatively affecting the enjoyment of others. My father introduced me to the game and I can still remember the very first thing he ever told me. “You leave the golf course in the same or better condition than you found it.” These are not fair asks of Club staff to be responsible for managing etiquette. Only the individual golfer can choose to accept these responsibilities. At the end of the day, this is your course. We work tirelessly to ensure you have a quality golf course, and programming to enhance your enjoyment.

Find Your PERFECT

POSTURE

By Jack Danshmand, Head Golf Instructor & Junior Golf Coordinator

To get in an athletic position for golf, ditch your club for a moment and simply stand tall. Then grab your belt in front with both hands.

From here, push your belt down into your hip sockets and tilt forward, stopping once you feel the muscles in the tops of your legs engage. You should have the sensation that your feet are solidly gripping the ground, so if a 50-mph wind blew through, you wouldn’t budge.

Now let go of your belt and let your arms hang. This is what perfect posture feels like. Do this drill a few times, and it will hit home that a good stance truly comes from the hips tilting forward— not from the knees or waist bending.

However, if you ever want to confirm your posture on the course, it’s easy to quickly sneak this into a pre-shot routine. Just lean your club against your side to free your hands and hold your belt. Then grab the club once you find your athletic position.

Plan for SUCCESS

There is no try…there is only to do or not, right? Well maybe. Cliché as it sounds most fitness programs succeed or fail before they begin. Well organized plans should be life altering. “Diets” are fine to lose a couple pounds but for sustained health improving habits, goals should be realistic and for the long term. Here are some helpful steps to get you started. Get your “mind right”: Set a no kidding drop dead date in your calendar that gives you enough time to prepare and communicate with your doctor and fitness professional. Annotate the reasons you want to start a fitness plan. Are you doing it to live longer, be healthier, lose weight or look better? Whatever the reason, if keep focused on it, you will be better able to motivate yourself.

By Josh Biard, Athletic Manager

The start of the New Year is a good time to reflect on the past year and take some time to establish new healthy habits and routines, but where and how to begin can be a little daunting. Do you know your priorities and goals? How are you going to adapt your nutrition and exercise plan and stay motivated? Don’t worry, we got you covered! I enlisted one of the most innovative and motivating people in the golf fitness world, Matt Greenemeier, to help you get your goals in order and kickoff 2021 with a solid attack plan.

Shop and stock: Generate a meal list of appropriate foods you like. There is a lot of high quality, good tasting whole food out there to enjoy. Pick your 6 favorite (healthy), dinner time foods and rotate through them for the first 12 nights. Having a meal to look forward to will decrease the likelihood of slipping. Set a menu: Plan out your weekly meals and snacks. You may need to take meals to work with you. Slip-ups often happen when you simply don’t have a better food option available. This includes planning for travel and eating out. Most restaurants have online menus. Knowing what you will order before you arrive will help avoid giving into foods that are not “trainer approved.” Inform your support group: Tell your family, friends, and neighbors; or anyone that will listen to you about your intensions. This will help hold you accountable and will signal to them that they should not apply any undue pressure on you by eating poorly around you. You can set the example! Establish an exercise regimen: Consult with your doctor and fitness professional about an appropriate exercise program. Be specific, are you a golfer? Then talk to a Titleist Performance Institute Golf Fitness expert. Everybody is different and you should build a program around your needs and abilities. Balance is key, and any age group should mix in some form of strength training with regular cardiovascular training. It is never too late to begin. Put it in your calendar: Carve out times for yourself and set your work out times in your phone or computer. This makes training times official and it makes you less likely to skip them. Fitness sessions don’t have to last hours and take up your whole week. Prioritize 30-minutes regularly to establish a routine. Plan to succeed and you are most likely to. Set realistic goals and communicate with professionals that can help guide you. Remember, the bottom line should be to become healthy or healthier. “Reduced waistline” goals are great but should be a byproduct of establishing a lifestyle of healthy living. How is YOUR MOVEMENT as it relates to making a GOLF SWING?

By Josh Biard, Athletic Manager

We are officially into 2021 and the growth we have seen in the golf industry is showing zero signs of slowing down. The golf courses, and practice facilities have been busier than ever. I hope that the weather will continue to remain mild, and allow us all the ability to continue enjoying the health benefits, and the mental reprieve an enjoyable day on the golf course has to offer. We are experiencing a movement in the game of golf that has brought new participants, as well as reenergized those actively enjoying the sport. Speaking of movement, how is yours as it relates to making a golf swing?

By Mike Kiesling, Director of Golf

The way your body moves directly affects how you swing the golf club. To be more specific we want to focus on the movement of Rotation. Why is Rotation so important?

face on the down swing then we are stopping our rotation, which causes inconsistencies with impact, and loss of club head speed.

• Rotation plays a critical role in the structure of the backswing

IMPACT

• Rotation helps the golfer manage the clubface throughout the swing • Rotation allows for a more consistent delivery of the club through impact • Rotation is key component to generate speed to hit the ball further The goal of this article is not to focus on golf instruction. You will be amazed at the changes you can make to your golf swing by focusing on movement, as opposed to “swing positions”. Trying to make certain “swing positions” in the backswing will often times limit rotation, thus inhibiting the body from moving properly. We will focus on some simple movement exercises you can do to help you enjoy this game fantastic game even more. BACKSWING STRUCTURE Stop the Shift and Slide. Proper rotation of the hips and shoulders in the back swing creates the hand depth needed to promote a shallowing of the downswing.

Do you struggle with consistency of contact? When rotation stops on the downswing your body will often go into early extension. This “standing up” through the hitting area will lead to inconsistencies at the moment of impact and lead to misses right, or left as well as heavy or thin shots. GENERATING POWER Power in the golf swing refers to the amount of speed you are able to generate. Now that we have created more hand depth due to more rotation in the back swing we can rotate freely through the ball, instead of back to the ball. Do not try and manage impact, it will stop your rotation, and decrease your power. Now that you understand the importance of rotation and how it affects several critical areas of your swing, let’s go over some of my favorite exercises for improving rotation.

MANAGEMENT OF THE CLUB FACE Let’s keep that club face square to the path, and rotate through the hitting area. If we are trying to manage the club 14

PELVIC AND THORACIC ROTATIONS • Equipment needed: none; this exercise can be performed anytime anywhere. • If needed, a golf club can be used to help get in the right position. • Cross your hands over your shoulders. • Rotate your hips without moving your shoulders. • Rotate your shoulders without moving your hips • The ability to disassociate lower body is a critical component of the stability needed for swing rotation.

Golf isn’t slowing down Make sure you aren’t either KNEELING PALLOF PRESS • Equipment needed: cable machine or band. • Start in a kneeling position with hands at chest level. • Keep the trunk and hips square throughout the movement. • Push the hands out parallel to the ground to a straight arm position before returning them slowly toward the body. • Engage the core and control the movement with slow consistency. • Perform 3 sets of 12 repetitions on both sides. MEDICINE BALL ROTATION THROWS • Equipment needed: medicine ball of challenging weight and a solid wall, rebounder or partner to toss the ball to. • Begin around 3-5 feet from the wall/rebounder/ partner with your feet and body in a swing ready position • While maintaining full range swing mechanics and keeping the core engaged, rotate and explosively toss the medicine ball, return and repeat. • Perform 3 sets of 8 repetitions on each side.

Tennis TIPS FROM THE PROS

By Jerome Millet, Head Tennis Professional

Focus on

FOOTWORK For players just starting out, one of the most difficult techniques of tennis is footwork. Every tennis shot you encounter will never be the same, but here are some footwork tennis tips to help you prepare for the next shot. Stay on Your Toes Don’t get caught flat footed. Staying on your toes will allow you to be more dynamic and explosive to chase down the ball. Don’t Get Too Close Most beginners have a tendency of getting too close to the ball which results in hitting with a bent elbow. To understand how far you should be from the ball, extend your arm while pointing the head of the racquet away from you. Ideally, you want to position yourself to hit with a straight arm. Use Stutter Steps While you’re running and approaching the ball, you should slow yourself down by incorporating quick and small steps. This will help the player get into the perfect position to hit the ball.

YOUTH TENNIS LOW RISK FOR INJURY By Jason Abante, Tennis Coordinator

High-contact sports like football, basketball and soccer are favorites among young athletes, but they’re notorious for producing injuries. While all of these activities provide

excellent sources of exercise and team-based playtime, they also create lots of tangled limbs. A tripping foot or a flying elbow could cause anything from a small bruise to a nasty concussion. If your athlete falls more on the younger side or feels uncomfortable in loud, crowded settings, high-contact sports might be more risk than fun. Tennis is considered a fairly low-risk sport due to the lack of player-to-player contact and the injuries that accompany such activity. And especially with the current state of things, tennis provides plenty of space for social distancing. Tennis courts provide lots of space for young athletes to run and play without the same concern for butted heads that other sports bring. While basic physical injuries like trips or tears are still possible in tennis, the risk is small enough that athletes continue to play the sport well into their senior years.

Bring your little ones out to the Sports Club for some Junior Tennis! In this program, your children will learn basic tennis technique, the rules of the game, the importance of staying active, and sportsmanship, all while growing a love and passion for the game! We have three different age groups (ages 4-6; 7-9; 10 and up) where they will fit in and learn each skill set appropriately. We utilize the Quickstart USTA method that allows our juniors to play the game and learn in accelerated fashion. So, come on down with your future stars and check it out! 18
