FROM THE

BOG Chairman

W

F O U R S E A S O N S G O L F & S P O R T S C L U B C O M M U N I T Y, ELCOME TO 2021! It is no understatement that 2020 was a very interesting and challenging year for all of us. Four Seasons Golf & Sports Club was no exception and your Board of Governors along with Club Management did all we could to continue to “enhance the Member Experience” for all of our Members. We cannot thank all of the Members enough for following all of the guidelines especially as they were changing often throughout the last year. As we look forward to the new year, it would be appropriate to take one more look back at the accomplishments achieved in 2020 and the leaders who led these organizations! • The Committees did an outstanding job of maximizing the experience for all of the Members and the different disciplines. The Men’s (MGA) and Women’s (WGA) Golf Associations added to each of their Memberships and for those of you who have not yet joined should experience the fellowship, sportsmanship and participation in these tournaments! Diane Fannon and Bill Bailey have done a terrific job of providing leadership to these organizations. In the MGA versus WGA, the WGA prevailed this year which sets up the challenge for 2021!

• The Tennis Committee led by Jerome and the Chair and 2021 Board of Governors Member, Lisa Croley, did an outstanding job of programming and running tournaments with excellent attendance. Indoor court usage was up 50%, lessons were up and the drills were full with waiting lists. The Golf Greens Committee led by Joe Kienast and Anthony Williams kept the golf courses in superb condition with golf rounds up significantly this year! The Handicap Committee led by John Brechin continues to be the best in class in managing our Golf Member’s handicaps and ensuring fairness across all of the Member Tournaments! The Golf Services Committee chaired by Mikael Svensson, with guidance and support from Mike Kiesling, saw participation in Club Tournaments up 50% year over year. The Fitness Committee with Colleen Christl and support from Josh Biard, Matt Greenemeir and Meg Plotsky, were able to expand programs, raised over $4,000 for “Fit to Fight Hunger benefiting Irving ISD”. They did a phenomenal job exceeding the cleanliness protocols for the fitness center, as well. The Social and Food and Beverage Committee, led by Bob Shema with support from Kristina Karoll, was instrumental in improving the dining experience in the Member Lounge, creating and managing many social events of all kinds during the year. • Your Board of Governors worked very closely with Club Management during the year and was able to make significant recommendations that were implemented. These included the following: Caring for All Seasons which raised over $60,000 for furloughed Four Seasons Employees. A presentation to Club Management in the spring to ensure the golf course operations has enough resources to keep our course in excellent condition was approved by Club Management and Ownership. A task group worked with Mike Kiesling to evaluate best practices and improvements for the Driving Range which was approved and will be implemented in January. The Board worked with Cory Cuff and Food and Beverage to bring major changes to the menu, Happy Hour and resources for the Member Lounge. Finally, the Board worked with Jim Kern and his team to bring forward a new golf cart plan for the Membership that will be offered and implemented in the first quarter of 2021! It has been a pleasure and honor to work with our board members this year and we look forward to continuing our support in 2021 to continue to find ways to maximize “the Member Experience”. Please continue to bring forward your thoughts and ideas!

FROM THE

General Manager

De a r Fou r Se a sons G ol f

and

Sports Club Members,

AS WE ENTER OUR 39 TH YEAR OF EXISTENCE, I’m reflecting on everything the Resort and Club has meant to Members over the years. We have certainly changed and grown with the times, adding innovative programs and modernizing services and growing our Membership in all categories, but at the same time we’ve managed to maintain our essential character and sense of heritage as being the best Club in our competitive set in the marketplace. Striking that balance has been the key to our longevity and success, and our future looks brighter than ever. Our 2021 focus and beyond will remain on increasing the value of your Membership with every decision that is made throughout the organization. We are excited that the initiatives that were in progress pre-Covid are ready to be implemented and we are moving forward with the following projects to be started this next year: •

Expand and renovate the Members Lounge to accommodate the dining needs of our Membership and create a special place where members feel a true sense of belonging to the Club and are proud to invite and share with friends and family. This project also includes significant expansion and enhancement to the outdoor seating areas and will include more fire pits and shaded areas for all members to enjoy.

Complete renovation of the Men’s and Ladies Locker Rooms with all new amenities and special features that will create improved experiences and new spaces for social activities. We will be adding as many new lockers as possible to the new locker rooms.

Expansion of our mind-and-body wellness programs with the addition of many new classes and offerings for our Members. We will also be upgrading and growing the main fitness floor with the addition of new, innovative equipment and amenities that will improve the fitness experience and eliminate any wait time.

The Tennis programming and events will continue to expand to accommodate the growing participation we are having in this sport with Membership.

In 2020, new windscreens were installed on all eight outdoor tennis courts, as well as, resurfaced.

The Golf Courses will be provided the resources they need to continue to be maintained as best-in-class in 2021. We have all new bunkers on both golf courses and recently added almost one million dollars of new equipment to our fleet that will certainly give Anthony Williams and his great team the best possible chance to stay ahead of Mother Nature for yet another season. We are also moving up our plan for a new irrigation system on the Cottonwood Valley Course in the near future as well as continued enhancements to the driving range facility in accordance with the master plan for this area.

I’d like to thank our dedicated Staff, including those that work tirelessly behind the scenes, for sustaining an excellent level of service day-in and day-out. 2020 was a very challenging year both personally and professionally for everyone. We have several new faces on our staff to add value to your Club experience in 2021. I am excited to announce the addition of the newly created position of Clubhouse Manager. This senior management role will be filled by Todd Bemis and he will work very closely with the food and beverage team as well as the membership events and programming team to ensure maximum membership value and satisfaction regarding everything food & beverage at the Club. Please help me in welcoming Todd to the Club team. A healthy Club is a growing Club and despite the COVID pandemic this past year, we were still able to maintain a positive growth in new memberships in 2020. We are thankful for all of the Members who have supported the Club over the past 38 years and we look forward to continuing to partner with your Board of Governors and Committees to take the Club experience to unprecedented heights. Also, please do your best in joining the Champions Club, our member referral program, in 2021. Information about this program and benefits can be found on the Club website at www.thesportsclubfourseasons.com or can be accessed on the Club APP. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all our members, employees, and families that have been impacted.

See you at the Club,

Jim Kern, PGA General Manager THESPORTSCLU BFOU RSE A SONS.COM

Stay Current with Course Conditions & Get Your Game in Shape By Mike Kiesling, Director of Golf

It is nice to live in a climate that allows us the ability to play golf year-round. While there may be a few days during the winter that we cannot

quite find enough layers to enjoy the sunshine, there are still a few gems where we can get out and enjoy our beautiful golf courses. However, we do have one weather variable that tends to affect our golfing plans as well, and that is frost.

Frost is frozen dew that crystalizes on the grass, making it hard and brittle to touch. Blades of grass consist of 90 percent water, which is why it freezes so easily. If someone or something was to walk on the frozen grass this would cause the plant to break and the grass cell walls to rupture thereby hindering the grass to grow normally. Did you know that the average foursome will take approximately 300 steps on each putting green? And with the effects of walking on the grass not being seen immediately the average golfer may not understand the importance of a frost delay. On average, the effects of frost damage will not be seen until 48 to 72 hours after the membrane damage has occurred, causing the grass to turn brown and die. We do our best to get the tee times back on time, but please utilize your Member website to stay current with all course conditions. You may think that it needs to be freezing to create frost; however, this is not the case. Frost may occur overnight, but it often occurs at sunrise before the temperature begins to rise. Grass absorbs the sunlight and heat during the day and then loses the heat when the sun goes down. The results of this could cause the temperature of the ground and grass to be cooler than the air temperature. Frost begins to form at 39°F or lower. It does not have to be below freezing for frost to occur. If the sky is clear, there is a greater chance for frost. When there is cloud cover this tends to keep the air and ground warmer, almost acting as a blanket. This first quarter of the year is also a great time to get the game in shape so you are ready when the season kicks off. We have a heated, and climate controlled area that is warm and toasty, and is a perfect place to spend time with one of our talented golf instructors.

How to utilize

TECHNOLOGY to improve your game

By Jack Danshmand, Head Golf Instructor & Junior Golf Coordinator

During our time hosting the Bryon Nelson did you ever see an orange box or blue mat players were using on the driving range? Over the past 20 years technology has evolved with video, doppler radars, to force plate and training aids. All of these have helped students improve their game at a faster rate. When I am working with a student, I will use Trackman Golf, BodiTrak and various training aids. What is Trackman Golf?

What is BodiTrak?

4D Doppler Radar

Pressure Mat

Tracks 28 different parameters (club path, face angle, club speed, ball speed, carry, total)

Video Analysis

Measures Ground Force Reaction

Golf Simulator

Weight Distribution

During a lesson, it is very helpful for the student to actually see their data rather than guessing with the human eye. Not only can a student see a difference in how the ball is flying but they can validate it with what the data shows. Being able to quickly identify the root problem in a student’s golf swing enables them to improve at a faster rate. If you are interested in booking an assessment, please email me at jack.daneshmand@fourseasons.com.

Tennis

Not Playing Well Today?

Turn Your Negative Play into Something Positive!

By Jerome Millet, Head Tennis Professional

Have you ever been annoyed, irritated, angry or even frustrated because it was just not your day?

You didn’t feel the racquet, the ball, your movement was not really fluid, you kept missing sitters and even your normal shots were short? Not to mention the serve… We’ve all been there, right? Well, if that is true, then it is inevitable to have a bad day. Just like in life, you can have a bad day in tennis. But it doesn’t have to stay like that. What usually happens when you have a bad day? You are very disappointed, you keep blaming the bad day for your mistakes (which is partly true), you become very emotional and we all know how we play in emotional states - not very good. Bad decisions, rushing things, taking the mind (and eye) off the ball and choking in the crucial moments of the match. How can we fix this? It takes a different – winning – attitude. First, you need to realize and see the reality as it is. In reality – you are having a bad day. But instead of dreaming how nice it would be to have the feel back again and be really feeling good this day, you need to fight with what you HAVE. You need to accept the reality as it is and do your best to deal with situation in a different way. That means that you can’t win the match with winners, surprise drop shots, super short cross court shots, and second serve aces. You need to accept the challenge that on this day it will be harder for you to play than on your good day.

16

W I N T E R 2 0 21

Stop looking for shortcuts and easy ways to win the match. There aren’t any, especially on a day like that. You need to play solid, percentage tennis. You need to play further from the lines and have a high percentage of first serves. Maybe change your approach. If your aggressive attacking style of play is not working today, then you must find your consistency despite your bad day. If you have no feel, start looking for it. Stay in the point; focus on how you feel the ball. Become aware of your feel and when it feels a little better. If you have problems with your serve, CHANGE IT! Stop hitting 150 mph serves if only 4 percent go in. Stop going for the corners on the second serve if you keep missing for a couple of inches. Serve a slower, more consistent first serve and serve a second serve more to the middle. Another good tip when you have a bad day is to focus only on tennis and not on your opponent. It’s very hard to play against your opponent AND tennis difficulties that you may have on that day. You first need to solve your tennis problems and then focus on your opponent’s play. How can you outsmart and outplay them if your tennis is not working 100%? See the problem, start looking for solutions. Focus on improving your tennis first and then start playing against your opponent. Always remember that no matter how bad your day of tennis may be – it’s only just a game. Have fun, learn from your mistakes, and there’s always another day!

JUNIOR TENNIS

TENNIS: A Sport to a Lifetime – Why Not Start Early?! Tennis for Youth By Jason Abante, Tennis Coordinator

Tennis can help develop a child’s character. In tennis you often have to figure it out on

your own. This builds a lot of independence. Tennis teaches kids how to set goals and challenge themselves to achieve their personal best. And, because players often receive specific instruction and in-depth evaluation from their instructors, it allows children to practice taking criticism and using it to improve their tennis game, while “learning how to learn”. Learning to work as part of a team is also an important life skill, which is why individual sports on the junior level often incorporate team elements. In tennis, while kids compete individually, they’re often part of a larger team setting, contributing points through their performance toward an overall team score and this collaborative contributes to the fun.

Bring your little ones out to the Sports Club for some Junior Tennis! In this program, your children will learn basic tennis technique, the rules of the game, the importance of staying active, and sportsmanship, all while growing a love and passion for the game! We have three different age groups (ages 4-6; 7-9; 10 and up) where they will fit in and learn each skill set appropriately. We utilize the Quickstart USTA method that allows our juniors to play the game and learn in accelerated fashion. So come on down with your future stars and check it out!

TIPS FROM THE PROS

Technique, Technique, Technique! By Jerome Millet, Head Tennis Professional

It is obvious, but there are only four results your shot can have: Into the net, long, wide, or the one we want, in the court. Simply put, the ball will go where your racket wants it to go. In other words, contact point in relation to your body and racket angle are the two factors, along with the swing path, to get to that contact point. Focus on the contact point being a comfortable distance from your body, a little in front with the racket face as square as possible (not open where the ball goes out) and not closed (where the ball goes into the net).

Don’t Lose Focus!

By John Mullman, Tennis Professional

Once a rally is in progress, you are reacting and it’s happening. Focus loss often occurs at the start of the point. For example, you rush your serve or you are in a lazy ready position. Take your time on your serve. Be in a good, ready position on your toes for the return. Loosely plan where you intend to serve or return plus the shot after. You can always adjust your plan if needed. So if you get focused, control your contact point, move with balance and poach those volleys then you’ll be taking home some hardware in no time!

Resistance Bands for Golf Fitness

By Josh Biard, Athletic Manager

Although golf is often considered to be a mental game, the physical side of the sport is becoming an increasingly important part of gaining a competitive edge. Even with all of the state-of-the-art equipment and high-level instruction, it is critical that the modern golfer maintains a strict and consistent fitness program that emphasizes golf specific movements. Exercise bands are compact, lightweight and can be used at the gym, in your home, office or hotel room. Additionally, unlike free weights that maintain static tension throughout your lift, resistance bands create greater resistance as your range of motion increases. Due to the increase in tension at the end of the movement, the band challenges stabilization, recruits more joints and muscles and maximizes range, all while providing the ability to safely change a movement mid-motion.

TIP

A L W AY S H A V I N G EXERCISE BANDS H A N D Y C A N H E L P.

This is all incredibly helpful for your golf game because your swing requires a coordinated effort of various muscle groups. Adding resistant bands into your golf training regimen will not only help ensure there are no weak points in your swing, it will increase range of motion and club speed, create more explosive movement and help prevent injury.

HERE ARE FOUR OF THE BEST GOLF SPECIFIC BAND EXERCISES THAT YOU CAN INCORPORATE INTO YOUR TRAINING PROGRAM. ◄ WOOD CHOPPERS

Secure the band above your head and stand next to it with your feet hipwidth apart. Rotate toward the band, grab the handles with both hands and, while keeping your arms straight, pull the handles across your body to the outside of your opposite knee. Control the movement back to the starting position to complete the first rep. DIAGONAL LIFTING ►

While in a kneeling position with the resistance band anchored at floor level and your body parallel to the band, pull the handle to your chest using both hands. After a brief pause, push the resistance band up and away from your body at a 45° angle. Pause at the top of the movement before bringing the band back to your chest. SHOULDER INTERNAL ROTATION

Anchor the band at waist height and grip the handle with one hand while standing far enough from the anchor point to create adequate tension. While keeping your active upper arm tight to your body and your lower arm parallel with the floor, rotate your arm in against the resistance until your hand touches your chest. Return to the starting position while controlling the resistance. HORIZONTAL ROTATION ► Secure band at shoulder level and stand next to the band with your feet hip-width apart. Rotate toward the band, grab the handles with both hands and, while keeping your arms straight, pull the handles across your body to the opposite side while maintaining a strict horizontal range of motion. Control the movement back to the starting position to complete the first rep.
