Covid-19. Despite the challenges, the game of golf has persevered and become stronger, and more popular than it has been in the last several years. Initially, when we were able to return to golf we found a By Mike Kiesling, different landscape. City and County governance instituted certain Director of Golf restrictions and guidelines courses had to adhere to in order to allow play. Due to all of the unknown and uncertainty, golfers could not ride in carts together. At one point, only singles were allowed to play in 10-minute intervals. Even rakes, water coolers, and trash cans had to be removed from the courses. Some courses could not make scorecards, pencils, or golf tees available to players. As time went by, and more was learned about the COVID-19 these restrictions were lifted. Golf is rated as one of the safest outdoor activities by several major medical bodies. What is next, now that the golf courses have returned to normal operational procedures, and virtually all of the amenities previously available are back in place? During the ensuing chaos when North Texas shut down there were certain behaviors golfers assumed as proper etiquette that virtually disappeared over night. We could no longer rake bunkers. We had no place to discard of our trash. There were no course marshals to manage pace of play, or remind golfers of unacceptable areas to drive their golf carts. We did not have course starters to remind players to repair their ball marks, or where to enter or exit the fairways. How do we get golfers to pair up in carts in order to minimize wear on the golf courses, who have become comfortable riding in their own cart?

The quickest answer to each of these is the course marshals, starters, and professional staff need to start enforcing the rules. Which, on the surface seems like the simplest solution. However, there is a much larger and growing trend. Unfortunately, the willingness to perform the above for some is negatively affecting the enjoyment of others. My father introduced me to the game and I can still remember the very first thing he ever told me. “You leave the golf course in the same or better condition than you found it.” These are not fair asks of Club staff to be responsible for managing etiquette. Only the individual golfer can choose to accept these responsibilities. At the end of the day, this is your course. We work tirelessly to ensure you have a quality golf course, and programming to enhance your enjoyment.

Golf Find Your PERFECT

POSTURE

By Jack Danshmand, Head Golf Instructor & Junior Golf Coordinator

To get in an athletic position for golf, ditch your club for a moment and simply stand tall. Then grab your belt in front with both hands. From here, push your belt down into your hip sockets and tilt forward, stopping once you feel the muscles in the tops of your legs engage. You should have the sensation that your feet are solidly gripping the ground, so if a 50-mph wind blew through, you wouldn’t budge.

Now let go of your belt and let your arms hang. This is what perfect posture feels like. Do this drill a few times, and it will hit home that a good stance truly comes from the hips tilting forward— not from the knees or waist bending. However, if you ever want to confirm your posture on the course, it’s easy to quickly sneak this into a pre-shot routine. Just lean your club against your side to free your hands and hold your belt. Then grab the club once you find your athletic position.
