Welcome to the DECEMBER 2023 ISSUE of Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS.

erry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The end of 2023, wow! … As I sit here and write this month’s Team Note and look back on the last 12 months, I can’t help but think that this was our first “back to normal” year. No restrictions and no masks, shows, parties, fundraisers and charity events. To say the year was back in full swing is no understatement. One month definitely rolled into another and I can honestly say that it feels like I was only writing the Team Note for our March edition the other month, blink and here we are - December 2023! This Christmas and summer break I am going to stop, explore the awesome places that we promote each month in FOCUS and make sure I recharge

the batteries and encourage all our readers and business owners to do the same, where possible. Our Cover Star… The one and only Sarah Pensini. The very colourful, kind and vibrant Sarah is a friend to many and as the owner of Marketplace Events we thought she would be the perfect cover star for December as we discuss all things Christmas shopping and supporting local businesses. Inside this Edition; Tom Gleeson is an Australian stand-up comedian, writer, television and radio presenter and is on his way to Port Macquarie. We had the pleasure of chatting with Tom and you can read his interview on page 34.

a fun day out, you will find something to suit your taste and budget at our markets. Come and experience the vibrant and friendly atmosphere of our markets, where you can support local businesses and have a great time.

Marketplace Events is a company that I have had the pleasure of running for the past five years What do you enjoy most about being with a passion for creating community focused involved with the local markets? events in Port Macquarie. Another thing I enjoy about our markets is the social and environmental impact that they have. We support charity and community groups at each market, with over 25 groups supported in 2023 alone. We also promote eco-friendly practices, such as using reusable bags and cups, and offering free kids workshops that teach them about sustainability and nature. When you shop local, you are buying directly from the people who design, produce, or grow your products. This means you are supporting their livelihoods, their families, and their dreams. You must get to meet many local makers and sellers, can you tell us about some of the stall holders that frequent the markets here in Port? I have the privilege of meeting many local makers and sellers at our markets, and I am always amazed by their talent and passion. It is hard to pick just a few, as we have so many amazing stalls, but here are some of my favourites that I always visit on market days: ‘Remains of the Day’ is a stall that offers an eclectic collection of vintage and quirky garments, sourced from various places 24 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

and eras. You can find anything from retro dresses and jackets, to funky hats and accessories. If you love unique and sustainable fashion, this is the stall for you. ‘Remade Vintage’ is a stall that transforms vintage tea towels and blankets into stylish and comfortable clothing. You can find shorts, dresses, and coats that are made from highquality fabrics and have a nostalgic charm. The designs are original and colourful, and you can also request custom orders. ‘Rosamarie’s Vegetables’ is a stall that sells fresh

vegetables, seedlings, and flowers from their farm. You can find a huge range of produce that is seasonal, organic, and delicious. You can also get some gardening tips and advice from Rosamarie, who is very knowledgeable and friendly.

‘Sensory Play Packs and Parties’ is a stall that caters to all your sensory needs, whether you are a child or an adult. You can find sensory play packs that contain various materials and tools, such as cotton sand, slime, dough, and more. You can also book them for parties and events, where they will provide a sensory play station that is fun and engaging for everyone. ‘Daisy & Ray’ is a stall that sells handmade earrings that are fun, loud, and creative. Holly, the owner and designer, makes her own earrings from polymer clay and other materials.

She always has special designs for different occasions, such as Christmas, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day. Why do you feel it is so important to support local small businesses like those at the markets?

Have fun and be creative. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different products and create your own gift baskets or hampers.

Supporting local small businesses like those at the markets is vital for our local economy and community. When you shop local, you are buying directly from the people who design, produce, or grow your products. This means you are supporting their livelihoods, their families, and their dreams, and trust me, nothing makes them happier than seeing you appreciate their creations. You also get the benefit of receiving the best advice and service from the experts who know their products inside out. Market days are no mean feat for our stall holders. They have to wake up before dawn, set up their stalls in the dark, and deal with unpredictable weather conditions. They also have to spend countless hours of labour and preparation before and after each market. But they do it with passion, dedication, and a smile on their face. They also help each other out, lending a hand with setting up, packing down, or reinforcing their stalls when the weather gets rough. They are not just vendors, they are a community.

By supporting local small businesses at the markets, you are not only getting quality products and services, but also contributing to the social and environmental wellbeing of our region. You are reducing your carbon footprint, supporting ethical and sustainable practices, and fostering a culture of creativity and diversity. You are also making a positive difference in the lives of our stall holders, who work hard to bring you the best of local produce, art, and culture. As we approach Christmas and the season of giving, what are some of your top tips for choosing gifts? One of the best ways to choose gifts for your loved ones is to visit our local markets and explore the amazing variety of products and services that we offer. You can find something for everyone on your list, whether they are in to art, food, fashion, or anything else. And the best part is, you are supporting local small businesses and families, who will appreciate your purchase more than anyone else. Here are some of my top tips for choosing gifts at the markets: Make a list of who you are buying for and what they are interested in. This will help you narrow down your options and save time. You can also jot down some keywords or phrases

that describe their personality, style, or hobbies, such as “loves animals”, “adventurous”, “ecoconscious”, etc. Talk to the vendors and ask them questions. They are the experts on their products and they can give you more information and advice. They can also tell you the story behind their products, how they are made, where they come from, etc. This will make your gifts more meaningful and personal. Have fun and be creative. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different products and create your own gift baskets or hampers. Enjoy the market atmosphere and the festive spirit. The markets are not only a place to shop, but also a place to have fun and celebrate. When will the markets be held this month and what can we expect from them? Is there anything special happening for the December markets? This month sees us operating 5 markets, and an extra one on New Years Day! Starting with the Foreshore Market on December 9, Town Square Holiday Market on December 16, 23 & 30th December and a special New Years Day market at Town Beach. Where can people keep up to date on what’s happening with the local markets? Through our social media platforms, search for The Foreshore Market, The Local Beachside Market and Marketplace Events. Wishing all the people of Port Macquarie and surrounds a very Merry Christmas and a big, bright 2024.

I

t’s been a huge year for The Players Theatre Inc with two block buster musicals, the first being the classic Chicago and the next being the riotous comedy Me and My Girl.

Both these shows filled our theatre to capacity on a number of occasions. The year started with comedy-satire Get Smart and was great to see followers of Agent 86 and Agent 99 join us for a fun time. “The Cone of Silence” lives on! Later in the year a hard-hitting classic play,” A Doll’s House” had audiences riveted as the plot

built towards the controversial ending. 2024 will start with a bang as the musical “Fame” will pack them in. Next will be an intriguing play “The Harbinger” where Lachlan Fardy will try his hand at directing at our theatre for the first time. Wendy Beck will also step into the director’s role with another classic musical “Legally Blonde.” “Unnecessary Farce” continues our theatre’s commitment to comedy plays and is a great way to round out the year. Last but not least is Showtime 80’s our

Christmas show which is still being formulated. Posters for all these shows are shown below. This is a great time to join up as a member and get the benefits of a full year’s membership. Benefits include discounted show tickets and drinks, full flow of information via emails that include details on audition and information days, four “Players Pondering” newsletters per year, an invitation to the AGM, voting rights and an invite to any social events through the year. To see the beauty in the little things, the little moments that are sometimes overlooked or that easily go unnoticed. A photograph can capture the sweetest moment; soft baby hands caressed so lovingly in Nanna's hand, tiny baby feet, or a cheeky moment between siblings when they give each other that smile, a smile that is so sweet but oh so cheeky at the same time. A photograph is our time capsule to transport us back to a moment in our own story, the more detail photographed the better the story can be retold.

How would you describe your style of photography? Do you have a favourite type of shoot to do?

H

i Candace. When did you first get into photography and what do you enjoy about it?

I think it all started when I was quite young, I always had a fascination with cameras and photos. I just loved to have a play around with my Nanna's old Kodak Brownie Camera, which I still have today! Looking through old photo

I like my photos with depth of colour, warmth and texture; maybe a little moodiness too! I like to tell a story with my photos and capture just about everything to do so! What may look ordinary right now, will bring back so many memories later on! My favourite sessions would have to be Cake Smash! They are just the best fun! I get to be creative with the setup and design of each one and every toddler has different reactions to having a whole cake to themselves! It’s messy but oh so fun! Can you tell us a bit about the kind of sessions you offer and how it usually all works on the day? Sure! So, I offer photo sessions for families, maternity, newborns, 1st birthday cake smash, milk bath and milestone sessions as well as Mother's Day, Easter and Christmas themed mini sessions. Photo sessions are usually booked at least a few weeks in advance so we can be organised for the day. It depends on the type of session, for how it all runs on the day too! Staying in contact with clients, keeping them informed, I think is the best way to have everyone relaxed and photo ready.

H

i Mitch and Laura, You are both the proud owners of Twelve Australia right here in Port Macquarie. Can you introduce yourself and tell us how your business started? We are both Port Macquarie locals who met as students at Mackillop College. We then ventured off together and experienced living and working in QLD, Darwin, and the remote Northern Territory for over a decade. Mitch undertook his Auto Electrical Apprenticeship with Komatsu and worked solely on mining, earthmoving, and construction equipment. This experience developed the framework for his technical, problem-solving skills and the high standard of workmanship he practices & teaches today. In 2017 an opportunity arose with the sale of G&H Auto Electricians, so we packed up our 3 young children and returned home to begin our next adventure running our small family business. Your business was previously known as Hastings Auto Electrical & Air Conditioning. What were the main reasons behind the recent change with your brand, and the name Twelve? When it came to the rebrand, it was important that the change was more than just a logo and that the brand aligned with our vision for 32 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

The name Twelve is now known as industry leaders and experts in the touring world who specialise in all aspects of 12V. One of the most rewarding aspects over the years has been our customer retention, with up to 70% of our customers every month being return customers. This has allowed us to form valuable relationships (and friendships) with a strong word of mouth presence within the community. On a larger scale, our team travelled and promoted our work at the National 4x4 Shows in Sydney & Melbourne in 2022, as well as exhibiting at the local MNC Caravan & Camping Show for 2yrs in a row. Most recently we were approached to present a 12V Basics talk to (almost) 200 members of the Rolling Solo travelling group during their

The standout feature during our displays this year has been the addition of our very own retro 1976 Millard Caravan which we transformed to display our products and workmanship. Our van is completely off grid and boasts enough power to run all the creature comforts including a coffee machine, hot plate, toaster & the air conditioning. Our Millard has attracted a lot of attention and is now set up full time at our workshop for viewing! Twelve provides industry leading knowledge, advice, products, and services. Tom Gleeson will be performing his latest comedy show ‘Gear’ at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie on the 15th December. So if you’re in need of a good laugh and a night of outrageous fun to round out the year… check it out!

H

i Tom. What led you to take up a career as a comedian? What draws you to want to perform?

It was not really a conscious decision. I was at university studying a Science Degree, and I went into a comedy competition, I won it, and I won $500. So then I did another gig and I got paid money for that, and I was just being paid to do comedy. So I graduated and I If it’s a stand up thought, well, I'll just show, I’m always keep doing comedy trying to talk about because it pays okay, topics that are a little so I just kept doing it. bit... you know.. make That was in 1996 and people sit up in their I just didn't stop ...and seats, maybe confront now I'm here.

safety net because, when I'm in say, Port Macquarie or Coffs Harbour, you're in the venue with the crowd. It's kind of generally accepted people a little bit. You’ve performed on that what gets said stage, TV and radio, in the room stays in what do you enjoy the room, because we about each of those can all handle it. If platforms? Do you have a favourite? anyone doesn't like it, they can heckle me, so it's kind of like a closed loop and I like They’re all good for different reasons. Like when you perform live, you can really push that part of it. But when you're doing TV, if you say something particularly evil and the boat out, you can really go out there funny, and you're happy with it, you know and if it’s a stand up show, I'm always a million people are going to see it. So as trying to talk about topics that are a little a show off, TV can be really fun, because bit, you know... make people sit up in if you do something good, everybody's their seats, maybe confront people a little going to see it! bit; I like to poke and provoke the crowd a bit, so that's fun. But there's a bit of a

You’re bringing your stand up show ‘Gear’

to Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour in December. How would you describe the theme or tone of this tour, and what can audiences expect in terms of the content you'll be exploring? Well, Gear is another word for material in stand up circles, often comedians will say ‘I'm trying out some new gear’. So the show is my current ‘Gear’ - my new show. I don't know, it's sort of hard to give a sense of it. Like sometimes when you give a shopping list of a show, it sort of doesn't sound so exciting. Basically, I'm sharing a lot of my dodgy opinions and telling a few tall stories of revenge. I've got a good story about how I caught someone trying to steal my Volvo in Melbourne and just a range of stories of things that have happened to me lately. Continued over... performance? I do it during the show, because when I'm performing live, I'm constantly listening to the crowd. So you know, if I feel like the crowd’s engaged with a particular thing, I'll talk about it for longer. If I can feel them sort of cooling off a bit, I might change to something else, so I'm constantly adjusting the show to the crowd. What crowds don’t realise is, they basically select the show that they see. What they react to is what they get. So if you're performing your show and early on you say something and the crowd goes “oooh” and they seem to think you're being too edgy, they get a really safe, s**t show. Where as if they applaud when something really edgy happens they get a very exciting, over the top show. You know, it depends how the crowd receives you. I do the show several times, so I'm not doing it for my own satisfaction. I'm doing it for the crowd. So if crowds are enthusiastic and encourage poor behaviour, then I deliver. Looking beyond the current tour, are there any new projects or comedic endeavours on the horizon that you're particularly excited about?

Where do you usually draw inspiration from when writing or coming up with material? What’s your process like when putting a show together? Essentially, I tell true stories about my life and then at the end of the show, I always invite the audience to scrutinise the stories. I always finish the show by telling people how true this show is. I give them a percentage and then I get them to try to guess which bits were lies and then I correct the record so that when they leave they've got their money's worth. I also give them their last chance - you're about to go, so if you're upset about anything, you can heckle me now and we’ll deal with it, rather than whinging about it on Facebook later! One thing I always take note of is 36 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

whenever I'm out and about at a party or dinner party, sometimes it's really interesting when the conversation turns to a certain subject and they hang on it for a long time. So I might get home and I think oh, wow, everyone was talking about their cars for like an hour. Okay, so suddenly then, when someone tries to steal my car, I think there's something in that, that's going to capture people's imagination. So usually, it's just any subject that people are really stuck on.. especially subjects that people get really fired up on at around 11 o'clock at night at a party when they’ve had a bit to drink. That’s usually gold. How do you decide what’s working well and what’s not? Do you ever cut or change material during a tour or do audience reactions ever influence your

Well, this tour will run all the way into the end of next year. This is just the beginning of touring around Australia. Taskmaster Season Two is going to be back on Channel 10 at the beginning of next year and we're going to be recording Taskmaster Season Three in March. I'm just about to do the last week of Season Nine of Hard Quiz, that goes to air next year, and we're signed up for Season 10. So there's a whole lot of TV still coming out. Where can readers find more info on the show or get tickets? The easiest place to go is comedy.com.au. If you go to that page, you can click on my name and all the dates are there for all the shows, not just for Port Macquarie and Coffs shows, but all of them... in case people might want to go for a drive to Toowoomba or something to see the show..!

GREGORY

PRESIDENT - PORT MACQUARIE PINK LADIES

Gabby Gregory is the President of the Port Macquarie Pink Ladies and has been volunteering her time at the Base Hospital for over a decade. The service this group of volunteers provides is invaluable and can make the world of difference for anyone needing hospital care, as well as to the staff and the families of patients.

C

an you provide an overview of the Pink Ladies' role at Port Macquarie Base Hospital and the services you offer to the community?

The Pink Ladies has about 100 women and men who volunteer their time to assist in all departments of Port Macquarie Base Hospital, with a focus on patient comfort and wellbeing. We also have a trolley service of snacks and toiletries that our volunteers take to all wards with all profit from sales going towards the purchase of hospital equipment. Past donations include wheelchairs, recliners for patients and their visitors and an oxygen trolley. Our volunteers also drive a small E-car around the carpark, ferrying visitors and patients to the hospital. Port Macquarie Pink Ladies has a long history of contributing to the hospital environment. How did the group come into existence, and what motivated its formation? We are all members of the United Hospital Auxiliaries (UHA) of NSW, founded in 1933 by Mrs Eleanor Mackinnon OBE whose objective

40 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

was: “to form an association of country and suburban auxiliaries which existed in the then Hospital Association, to encourage a mutual exchange of ideas as well as general stimulation of efforts.” Now in its 80th year, the UHA is still delivering on that commitment, contributing volunteer hours and medical equipment to public hospitals throughout the state. Port Macquarie Pink Ladies is just one branch, and its members have diligently served our local community from the corridors and wards of the old Hastings District Hospital to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Port Macquarie Community Health. Our members continue a proud tradition of service, following the inspiring example set by Pink Ladies such as Life Members Freda Weidenbohn, Elaine Minturn and Jan Maskill OAM. It’s an honour for each and every one of us to continue that legacy. What inspired you personally to become a Pink Lady, and how has the experience impacted your connection to the community? My husband and I retired to Port Macquarie from Melbourne, and I went from full-time

employment to retirement. It was a big change for someone like me who had had a long and satisfying career. I needed to occupy my time in an environment where I felt I was helping my new community. The hospital and its patients and staff resonated with me, so I joined. It’s been over a decade now, much of it as President of the Port Macquarie Pink Ladies. I know the value of our Pink Ladies to patients and staff because so many people thank us for our work, but volunteering has also brought a great deal of satisfaction to me, personally. I feel like I am contributing to a better community, and that sense of worth is wonderful. Joining the Pink Ladies has also allowed me to connect with a new community, to build some amazing friendships and meet some remarkable people. Volunteers are wonderful human beings, so I consider myself very fortunate indeed to be able to count many of them as friends. Could you share some examples of the various tasks and activities that the Pink Ladies are involved in at the hospital? Our volunteers take a snack and toiletry trolley throughout the hospital each weekday. This provides patients who can’t leave their bed the chance to buy items they might otherwise

go without, especially if they don’t have family or friends visiting. The trolley is also an opportunity for patients to have a chat with a friendly face. We also provide a free courtesy service with our distinctive pink E-car in the carpark, delivering visitors and patients to the front doors of the hospital and returning them to their vehicles at the end of their visit. Our Pink Ladies volunteer in all wards, including Intensive Care and Emergency, helping staff with some administration tasks, and we also provide support to administrative roles in Maternity, Pre-admission Clinic and the Fracture Clinic. Visitors to the hospital will often be greeted at the front entrance by a Pink Lady who can give them directions, or walk with them, to their intended destination. The Pink Ladies had to take a break over the COVID pandemic, how has it been to be back in the hospital? How have things changed? Our branch had many resignations during COVID-19 due to the fact we are in the vulnerable age group. However, we remain one of the largest UHA branches in the state, thanks to high vaccination rates and a continued determination to make a difference. It was wonderful coming back to the hospital when visitation restrictions were eased. The staff made us feel welcome and told us how much they had missed us. It’s a privilege to volunteer in our base hospital in the knowledge our presence is greatly appreciated. I think COVID actually taught us all that we are a team, working towards a common goal – improving patient wellbeing. If there are others reading who are interested in volunteering as a Pink Lady, what is the process like and how do they get in touch? I would encourage anyone wanting to make a difference in our community to join the

CHANGE

Pink Ladies, where they will also make new friends and enjoy the connections that are made possible by volunteering. There are requirements for vaccinations to be up to date, and a police check, which the hospital does as it has a duty of care to its staff and patients, but the paperwork at the start is worth the rewards that come with being a member of the Pink Ladies. Anyone interested in finding out more can send an email to:

Our volunteers are mostly older people, but their background stories are as diverse as their life experiences. It’s this diversity of life experiences that help our volunteers to connect, not only with each other, but with staff and patients whose own stories are unique. This coming together of experience and kindness is always the perfect way to start a conversation with a stranger, that may just brighten their day.

Sharon.Fuller1@health.nsw.gov.au or phone Sharon on 0417 982 167.

Fundraising is often a part of volunteer organisations. Can you tell us about any fundraising efforts or events organised by the Pink Ladies and how the funds are utilised to benefit the hospital or the community?

Can you share any memorable experiences you've had that have been a highlight for you in your time as a Pink Lady? I can’t provide specific examples, but I would like to say that the Pink Ladies (which also includes men) are the kindest, most caring people I have ever encountered, and their generosity knows no bounds. I can’t think of a better way to spend a couple of hours each week, fortnight or month! The Pink Ladies are a diverse group with members of different backgrounds and experiences. How does this diversity contribute to the effectiveness of the group's initiatives?

FOCUS has teamed up with Clint from My Video Producer to bring you this campaign dedicated to supporting local charities and GoFundMe campaigns. Checkout this months feature, Port Macquarie Pink Ladies...

We have just launched our Christmas raffle, one of our major fundraisers for the year. We have some awesome prizes up for grabs thanks to the support of our local business community. Tickets are available from Pink Ladies at the hospital, and I would encourage everyone with a spare dollar or two to grab a ticket as every cent raised will be used to buy hospital equipment that will help patients. Jak Dobbyns is the President of the Beechwood Billycart Association that proudly brings us the Beechwood Billycart Classic each year. The race is a diverse and challenging course and welcomes entrants of all levels and ages. H

i Jak. Can you tell us about your involvement with the Beechwood Billycart Classic?

My involvement with Beechwood Billycart originated from my childhood as a spectator. More recently however, I’ve come on board as President of the Beechwood Billycart Association and have helped organise and grow the event over the last few years. This has been in collaboration with a number of other volunteers also, and our major partners Regional Australia Bank and The Beechwood Hotel. Where are the races held and who are they open to? The races are held in Beechwood down Papinbarra Mountain along a 5km track that finishes outside The Beechwood Hotel. The race itself is open to all. We have tried to create a diverse array of categories to ensure the event

is inclusive to all. Can you tell us about the course and what's required to complete it? The course is Australia’s hardest and longest billycart track that we know of. The track itself is fairly undulating with quite steep slopes at the start, which sees competitors reach impressive speeds of 130km/h. All competitors need is a driver, a pusher, and a billycart! What sort of array of carts do you get entering the race each year? Are there any requirements around them or how they’re made? To complete the course, competitors need to construct their own billycart meeting the cart specifications that are found on our website. We currently have pro cart, three-wheeler, open cart, single rider and junior racer categories. To bridge this gap for potential competitors we are looking to have carts designed and constructed for next year’s race, allowing

What do you hope the future holds for the Beechwood Billycart Classic? We hope the future of the Billycart Classic is one of growth. It's an amazing event, and one that’s been around for a long time. Our goals are to continue its current trajectory and ensure the day can continue to bring excitement into the community but more importantly, help support our town's local sporting infrastructure. Thanks Jak.

We also had the return of our single cart racers for the first time in years to add some excitement to the day. What is the atmosphere like on the day and what else is happening for the event other than the race? The day is about much more than the billycart race itself. We want the day to be about the whole family and the wider community more generally. As the event is a fundraiser for local sporting infrastructure, we plan the day to be a day out for the whole family and a day that brings our community together. We all share a love for the great outdoors, and whenever possible, we embark on camping or water adventures. I am grateful to have my wife and kids around to taste-test my new culinary creations. My background in the industry is French-trained. I was fortunate enough to commence my apprenticeship in the bustling city of Sydney, where I learned the art of cooking, the importance of respecting food, and how to be a chef. My first head chef teacher imparted invaluable knowledge on to me and by the time I was 22 years of age, I had become a head chef. Over the years, I have moved around to learn as much as I can, including opening up a bar/restaurant with a couple of my mates. Now, I am thrilled to have taken on the Executive Chef role at Port City. Where did your passion for cooking start, take us back to the beginning of your career? My passion for cooking started when I was young. As a child, I had a keen interest in good food, perhaps due to my mother's lack of culinary skills. I dreamt of becoming a chef. Once I began my apprenticeship, I was amazed by the pace of the service, the endless possibilities in cooking, and the various techniques. I was instantly hooked and committed myself to becoming the best chef I could be. You are teaming up with Head Chef James, what are you looking forward to most about working together? James is undeniably one of the most talented chefs I have had the pleasure of working with. His culinary expertise is unmatched,

While our club classics remain, we have added some fresh and exciting options to the menu. Savour the flavours of our herbcrusted lamb backstrap, crispy skin saltwater barramundi fillet with tomato textures and our passionfruit & vanilla-glazed pork belly with mandarin and pomegranate salad. What does a typical day look like for you and James? It's been a jam-packed schedule lately with staff training, reviewing our specials, and ensuring that our food meets the highest standards of quality. Christmas and the holiday season are always super busy in Port Macquarie and at Port City. pace of the service, the endless possibilities in cooking, and the various techniques. I was instantly hooked and committed myself to becoming the best chef I could be.

What are you favourite items on the menu to create and why? If you're wondering what dishes to try, I highly recommend the lamb backstrap

and barramundi. The lamb backstrap is a delicious cut of meat that's bursting with flavour. It's expertly paired with whipped feta, which provides a salty contrast to the sweet baby vegetables. The mint salsa verde adds a zesty kick, tying everything together. As for the barramundi, its subtle flavour is complemented by the various

textures and flavours of tomatoes. When I think of spring and summer, I think of the freshness of tomatoes, and this dish captures that perfectly through different tomato techniques. ho else is reeling with the idea that we’re plunging headlong into December already? I mean where did this year even go? Anyone

know?

Before we hit the fast forward button, let’s just take a moment to pause and reflect on what keeps us ticking along. It’s easy to feel somewhat jaded and exhausted at this time of year and wonder exactly why we do the things we do, but really there’s got to be a method to the madness and let’s just say - a reason for the season. If there’s one thing the last few years have taught us, it’s that the time is now. More than ever we have no real sense of what is around the corner. We don’t know what next year will really look like, or next month – or even next week. So if there’s one reason to strive, it’s for the sheer, irrefutable fact that the time is now. For when we put off again - that long overdue catch up with old friends, that visit interstate to family, that phone call or appointment, bucket list adventure or trip abroad - we run the risk of having to forfeit it for good. It can be so tempting to procrastinate off into 58 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

a dim and distant imagined future, but chances are, the longer we wait, the slimmer the chance of what you once imagined ever coming to fruition. So if there’s cause to celebrate (and to be honest, who even really needs an excuse), do it now. For when it comes down to it, this is the very essence of what it means to be alive. The precious moments we share with family and friends will be the memories that sustain us later when we can no longer be the life and soul of any party.

indulgence all on reflection are those very things that make a life worth living. What are you waiting for? Get those invitations out and start planning and prepping. It can be bigger than Ben Hur or a small as you like gathering of your very nearest and dearest.

If there’s one thing the last few years have taught us, it’s that the time is now. More than ever we have no real sense of what is around the corner. We don’t know what next year will really look like, or next month – or even next week.

Just when it all seems like too much, on the verge of the silly season, this is why we do what we do. Sure the work can be relentless, organising, shopping, cooking, cleaning up ad infinitum, but for those precious moments of connection that occur as a result of such efforts – now they are the stuff worth bottling. Even the gaffes, the faux pas, the heated exchanges fuelled by exhaustion and over

Just know that when you welcome those you care about, whether it’s in your home, at your favourite dining establishment, or down the beach for a barbie – that you are truly living. When you’re all packed up and the guests have all gone home you can pat yourself on the back and know that you’ve truly lived. Dramas, headaches, burnt sausages aside it is all worth it in the end.

Love it or loathe – those of us who may appear to loathe it often grudgingly admit that it wasn’t so bad in the end. So fire up the barbie and chill down the bubbly…embrace the crazy and rest well at the end of it all knowing you made a little magic and a lot of memories.

Planchette is one of the youngest performing drag queens in NSW and a strong advocate for the local LGBTQIA+ youth community here on the Mid North Coast.

H

i Planchette. Can you tell us a bit about how you discovered drag and thus Planchette?

In 2020 I discovered a little well-known show by the name of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ and ever since then, I have been in love with the art of drag. In 2021, I took my first steps into the dazzling world of drag and out popped my alter ego, Planchette. I got my name from the heartshaped indicator that is used on a Ouija Board because I’ve always had a fascination with séances and the occult, so I found a way I can express my love for all things paranormal and spooky and that is through Planchette. What do you enjoy most about becoming Planchette? While becoming Planchette, I get the pleasure of enduring a total transformation from head 66 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

to heel, including make-up, padding, costume, shoes, wigs etc. I would have to say that my favourite part of this experience is the feeling you get when you slip on that final piece of your costume and really feel the fantasy that is drag. It takes over your whole body and soul and you suddenly become your drag persona completely. You’re one of the youngest Drag Queens in NSW, what is the drag community like and how has being one of the youngest shaped your experience so far? The Australian drag community has embraced me with open arms since I became a performing Drag Queen, especially a particular drag family in Newcastle, NSW by the name of the 'Haus of Woo'. My gorgeous drag mother Sticky Waffles "adopted me" into the Haus of Woo earlier this year and the whole family has been nothing but supportive of me and my career. Being one

of the youngest queens in NSW has limited my experiences in some ways, as most drag shows are held in 18+ venues and environments, but it has also opened me to new experiences at the same time as I've been able to represent a new age of drag literally and figuratively. Drag is often seen as an 18+ artform but I'm here to prove that it is for all ages, to watch and be involved in. You’re a great advocate for the queer community here on the Mid North Coast, can you tell us a bit about some of the groups and events you’ve been a part of? Here on the Mid North Coast, I have had the opportunity to be involved in many events including the 2023 ArtWalk, unveiling the Sydney World Pride 2023 koala 'Unity' for the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, the 2022 Queer Prom which was a Halloween themed formal for local LGBTQIA+ youth and I can say proudly that the list goes on. I am also on the

committee for ‘Out, Loud and Proud,’ a queer advocacy group that's making a difference on the Mid North Coast. This organisation has brought inclusivity, support, and empowerment for the LGBTQIA+ community, not only in Port Macquarie but across the entire region. Performing is a big part of doing drag, what have been some of your performance highlights or favourite shows you’ve been a part of? I would have to say that being involved in the Sydney and Melbourne 2023 Drag Expos has been the highlight of my drag career so far. This year’s ArtWalk was also a highlight as it was amazing to perform at the Clarence St Stage and see how much the Port Macquarie community embraces drag as an art form when exposed to it. The 2022 Queer Prom was the very first live drag show I performed in, and it truly opened my eyes to what I can become through this line of work and what I’ve been working on becoming the last couple of years. You’re a makeup artist also, have you always loved experimenting with makeup? What are some of your favourite looks to create? I have been a make-up artist since 2020 when I was just a little 14 year old queer kid that didn't know how to fit in. I decided that if I couldn't fit in, why not just stand out more and embrace myself and all my quirks. I’ve always had a passion for the more creative and editorial make up looks that use a lot of colours and make people stare at you when you walk down the street. I am very dedicated to makeup

This year’s ArtWalk was also a highlight of my career as it was amazing to perform at the Clarence St Stage and see how much the Port Macquarie community embraces drag as an art form when exposed to it.

artistry and drag, to the point of even shaving off my eyebrows so I can reach the pinnacle of my makeup work and shock people to a new level with the quality of work I’m producing on myself. I’ve worked for 'Andy Pandy Hair Candy' as an apprentice hairdresser since 2022 and I work as a make up artist for my own business, 'Work of Artistry' inside the salon as well, so if you ever want your make up done for a formal, wedding, or special event, give us a call.

Fashion is also a significant aspect of drag. How would you describe your drag style, and what influences your fashion choices? I wanted to create a drag style that is unique and creative but at the same time reflects my personality and drag name. My fashion influences consist of Stevie Nicks, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Morticia Addams, Nancy Downs, Bride of Frankenstein, The Sanderson Sisters and all those other spooky women out there. My drag style is inspired by the goth community, Halloween, witches, the occult and anything else alternate and spooky. My fashion influences are also reflected in the music I choose to perform. Some of my favourite go-to lip-sync songs are Just a Girl by No Doubt, I Put a Spell on You by Annie Lennox and Edge of Midnight by Stevie Nicks and Miley Cyrus. I like to go for that punky, rocker chick aesthetic but with just

a dash of gothic and witchy vibes. How do you see your Planchette persona evolving over time?

I see Planchette becoming even more renowned (and spookier) as I get older and can be involved in even bigger projects. My big dream is to show the world that drag isn’t only for adults but is an all-age art form and remove the stigma connected to drag and kids because it is NOT true. I am living proof that drag can lighten a child's world instead of dulling it. I mean, what kid doesn’t like glitter and dressing up? For other young LGBTQIA+ community members or individuals interested in exploring drag, what advice do you have for them as they navigate their own journey? A piece of advice for somebody wanting to explore the world of drag is, don’t take it too seriously. I mean look at you, you’re in a crazy costume and have a wig glued to your head. The art of drag is hard work, but it’s also fun. Treat it like that. My only other piece of advice would be, don’t take what other people say to heart. I agree that it’s hard to shake off something negative that someone has said, but at the end of it all, it’s your dream and it’s what you love, so stick to it no matter what others may say, you can find your people out there. For me, it’s mixed emotions. It’s summoning the energy to head into our busiest time of the year, with a sense of fun and excitement, while trying to refill my tank after what always seems like a marathon effort to get here. You’d be forgiven for thinking that I should be quite familiar with this routine, the juggle of the numbers and the forecasting of stock (seeing as though this is my 11th, or is it 12th year of doing it?!) but no, each year is hard, and this year is no different! In business there’s a saying - “You have to have it, to sell it”, but it’s a fine line. And while it’s one we’ve traveled many times before, that still doesn’t remove the pressure. Where can people check out your music, get in touch or keep track of upcoming gigs? People can check out my Facebook at either Dusty Soul or Fella Felafel pages and can contact me by Facebook or email at dustysoul1986@gmail.com. Peace, and hope to see you at a show.

that stand out in your mind?

We are super pumped to be playing at Crescent Head Tavern on New Year’s Eve. I am also currently taking bookings for Dusty Soul solo gigs in 2024.

To prepare for shows I practice several days a week and always do vocal and guitar warm up before band practice and performances. There have been so many shows over the years but the most memorable show I can think of is at Crescent Head Tavern when they were partying so hard that they pulled my monitor, (the speaker I use to be able to hear myself on stage), out and I had to pull my ear plugs out so I could still hear. It was insane but so much fun. What do you enjoy most about performing?

I truly enjoy seeing the smile on people’s faces and the true appreciation for what I do. I love it when people come up after the show and share stories about what a certain song I played means to them.

You’ve been playing music and singing for a while now, how would you say you’ve evolved as an artist over the years? When I first started playing I was always the front man being a self taught guitarist and classically trained vocalist. I had a bit of a traumatic moment in my music career that made me want to sit in the background and learn a lot more about guitar. I helped a couple of other musician friends write songs with my recently found knowledge and GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 75

Is It Shoulder Bursitis? It is estimated that shoulder pain ranks amongst the top four painful conditions that drive Aussies to seek healthcare related treatments every year.

U

nderstanding Shoulder Bursitis Shoulder bursitis is often characterized by a pinching or catching pain in the shoulder. In some instances the pain can radiate down the outer arm as far as the elbow. The pain is often accompanied by a reduction in shoulder movement that can lead to difficulty or pain when raising your arm up or putting it behind your back. Quick movements of the shoulder and arm can cause discomfort. What is Shoulder Bursitis? Inside your shoulder there is a small fluid filled cushion called a bursae. The bursae reduces friction in your shoulder joint when moving and raising your arm. The bursae

are good at their job, however muscle imbalances and a rounded shoulder posture can place excessive pressure on the bursae causing it to swell, become painful and affect your shoulder range of motion. Causes of Shoulder Bursitis While the causes of shoulder bursitis can be many, for most people we see clinically the issue develops gradually over time and is often a combination of poor posture, muscle imbalances, repetitive use and issues related to the neck. What Can You Do? One of the quickest and easiest things that you can do today to help with your shoulder pain is to avoid sleeping on the painful shoulder. Why? The extra pressure from your body weight can compress the bursae in

your shoulder and cause more local pain and swelling. If you’re interested in further information or wish to explore how we can assist you in relieving your shoulder bursitis, please contact us today.

The all-new take-home kit requires only one appointment, to assess if the patient is suitable for the whitening treatment. After the initial assessment you will take your kit home and you will be free to start your whitening from the very first day. *It should be noted that if you have advanced restorative crowns and fillings, this treatment might not be right for you. The benefit of the take-home system is that YOU are in control of your whitening, and

can choose the shade that YOU like. From the first day you can choose to do 1 or 2, 10-minute sessions and you'll see results almost immediately. The LED light included in your take-home kit is fully rechargeable and you can top up your whitening at any time down the track by purchasing additional tubes of the whitening solution for $25-$30 from your dental practice. What can you expect? It is usually possible to achieve a shade that is three to eight shades lighter, taking years off your smile and making you look and feel younger in 3-5 days. An added advantage is that you can target specific teeth that are more stubborn or stained. If your teeth become sensitive during the treatment, you can give them a break and resume after a day or so; this side-effect is transient, and with care causes minimal discomfort. The best bit is that you can expect a smile that looks years younger in just 3-5 days, so why not start your year with a whiter, brigher smile? To celebrate this Christmas with a whiter brighter smile call the caring team at Sundial Dental 6583 3533 or 6585 2015.

“We also support seniors to engage in meaningful activities and hobbies, which provide mental stimulation as well as a chance to connect with others socially,” says Kathleen. “We know it can be difficult to ask for help – especially if you’ve been independent your whole life. Exploring your aged care options:

HOME CARE VS. AGED CARE HOMES

As you age, you may start to think about your future care options. There are two main choices: home care and aged care facilities.

B

oth have their own advantages and disadvantages, but home care, supported by the Federal Government’s Home Care Package Program emerges as the most preferable option for a majority of seniors. Residential aged care

and assistance to people in their own homes. This can include a wide range of services, such as:

Residential aged care facilities provide a structured and supportive environment for seniors who require round-the-clock care and supervision. Residential aged care facilities offer 24/7 support, specialised care for seniors with complex health conditions, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or physical disabilities. Home care: The preferred choice for many seniors Home care is a service that provides support

Personal care (e.g., bathing, dressing, grooming)

Domestic care (e.g., cleaning, cooking, laundry)

Respite care for caregivers

Nursing care

Allied health care

Funding home care

Subsidised home care is available under the Australian Government’s Home Care Package Program. Home Care Packages can be made available to people over the age of 65 (or 50 for people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent) who have age-related care needs.

The Trilogy Care difference Trilogy Care supports those with an approved Home Care Package to self-managed their Home Care Package budget. Light WORKPLACE CHRISTMAS FUNCTIONS

C

M E R R Y

H E L L

hristmas and workplace Christmas functions are already in the diary and fast approaching. Generally propelled by an overconsumption of alcohol, workplace Christmas functions can be a significant financial and health hazard. Workers compensation will generally apply to physical injuries sustained at work Christmas parties even if the function is held offsite and attendance is voluntary and after hours. The Christmas party is an extension of the workplace with the same obligations and entitlements applicable as the normal workplace. In general, employers should have policies in place which deal with employee behaviour at a social function including alcohol and illicit substance consumption. Examples of actual incidents which have played out in the Commission include: • Males harassing females verbally and/or physically. • An employee repeatedly pushing his manager in the chest before throwing him into a swimming pool fully clothed. The employees concerned in the above incidents were terminated with subsequent unfair dismissal claims being unsuccessful.

C A N

with ALAN PRIEST FROM PRIEST LEGAL

R E S U L T

However, each matter does turn on its own facts. An employee at a Christmas function who told his boss to ‘F*#% off’, tried to touch the face of a female colleague, kissed another on the lips and told her he would be dreaming of her later that night made a successful unfair dismissal claim. The Commission found that the termination was harsh and unjust because the employer should have exercised greater control over the self-service of alcohol at the function, the incidents were not sufficiently connected to his employment, and he otherwise had a clean record as an employee. Difficulties can arise where the Christmas function ends and some employees later move to a separate venue but continue the merriment and, in the course of it, an employee suffers injuries. If the employer invites, encourages or induces employees to attend the second venue then liability may fall on the employer - particularly if one or more managers attend the second venue adopt a leadership stance or the employer provides transport to it or subsidises alcohol or food at the second venue. Again, each case turns on its own facts. In a recent case, a number of workers went to a hotel after a workplace Christmas function at a local golf club. The employer company’s managing director also went to

the second function. At about 2 am, after heavy drinking, the managing director and some employees got into a heated discussion about work matters and the managing director punched an employee twice causing him to fall and suffer brain damage. The Commission found that the employer company was not vicariously liable for the managing director’s actions because the employees at the hotel were on a ‘frolic of their own’. If the punch up had happened at the golf club function the injured worker would have succeeded with his claim. Drink driving can also be fertile ground for claims after a Christmas function. An employee who crashed her car on the way home from her office Christmas function was not successful in her claim because she was under the influence of alcohol and had disobeyed directions from the employer not to drive home intoxicated. Moral of the story: Employers - be careful. Employees - save the excessive drinking for Christmas not the workplace Christmas function. On behalf of all the staff at Priest Legal, we wish all readers a very happy holiday season and look forward to being with you in 2024! A Word from M R ALLAN GU I H OT

PRINCIPAL S T C O L U M B A A N G L I C A N S C H O O L We’re far from the shallow now ...Deep Learning @ SCAS “I lament the fact that it is still easy to get good grades, graduate from high school and not be good at life” - Michael Fullan PH.D I have been in the teaching game for a long time across three systems of education in NSW and I have witnessed many changes in pedagogical thinking. The development which I feel most excited about and which encapsulates what education should be about, is a framework that shapes the way we facilitate student learning called New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL). SCAS has been on the NPDL journey since 2017. Canadian educator Michal Fullan developed Deep Learning principles with the purpose of fostering learning so that all learners contribute to the common good, address global challenges and flourish in a complex world.

Deep Learning principles modify the role of teachers to that of activators of learning who design learning experiences that build on learner strengths and needs, create new knowledge using real-life problem solving and help all students identify their talents, purpose and passion. A number of traditional and emerging pedagogies are employed by teachers to achieve this with their students. Deep Learning encourages development of six key competencies- Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Critical Thinking. At SCAS, we call these the 6C’s and they underpin our work with student learners. Deep Learning principles allow teachers and students to develop a student’s capability from an emerging ability in a competency to a proficient one.

School is not, and should not be solely about the transfer of knowledge - technology has been taking care of this for some time. The development of capabilities or competencies allows a student to show that they know more than the ‘What’ and ‘How’ - when proficient, a student just ‘does it’. When a student knows the ‘What’, ‘How’, ‘Why’ and ‘When’ and then routinely ‘does it’, then the learner has developed a capability into a disposition. For learners proficient in the 6C’s, the world of work and study opens up and they become more adept at life.

DANNY DUNBAR L A K E C AT H I E P U B L I C S C H O O L SUPPORTED LEARNING CLASS

Danny Dunbar is an educator at Lake Cathie Public School. He teaches one of the extraordinary Supported Learning Classes, and after a generous donation was made to enhance these kids’ learning opportunities, he has been involved in setting up a number of incredible opportunities for his students.

H

i Danny. Can you tell us a bit about your class and how the Supported Learning Classes are structured?

We have two Supported Learning Classes here at Lake Cathie Public School, one for students in Kindergarten and Year 1, and the other from Year 2 to Year 6. There are 7 students in each class and we are lucky enough to have fantastic classroom facilities that enable us to open our classroom doors and share our learning spaces. Each class team has a teacher and a Student Learning and Support Officer. Supported Learning Classes cater for students with a variety of learning and support needs. You recently received some funds that have allowed the school to set up some opportunities that they may otherwise not have been able to achieve. Can you tell us how this came about? Jodie Candia, a Lake Cathie Public School parent who runs the NDIS provider ‘Support Services For You Mid North Coast’, made the very generous offer of substantial

Jodie Candia has again gone out of her way to support us by having organised a fundraising day at Lake Cathie Bowling Club for our Supported Learning Classes which was held on Sunday 26th November. There is a lovely connection that already exists between us and the bowling club as they have welcomed us onto their greens this term to learn lawn bowls as part of our sport lessons. Many people from our school community helped with preparation for the day and the funds raised through community participation will go directly towards students in Supported Learning. The Supported Learning students are already excited about the potential opportunities that await them in the future. Thanks Danny. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 99

CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS

with KATE WOOD-FOYE

FROM CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY

Alys Harrington Alyssa Harrington is living proof that your journey through study to your dream career is not always a straight line. Her passion for making a difference through health, wellbeing and fitness has been her leading light as she embarks on a new degree - all whilst excelling in student leadership roles and community projects.

A

lyssa, congratulations on completing your second year of your Bachelor of Social Work and for discovering a new direction, tell us a bit about it.

I enjoyed studying social work as it has provided me with opportunities to broaden my interpersonal skills and resilience. I also enjoyed the challenge of being faced with different scenarios that entailed a broad range of social justice issues and deepening my awareness and understanding to respond to those in an empathetic and proactive manner. During my placements I was able to engage with the local community throughout a variety of programs and outreach. While I thoroughly enjoyed this time and the opportunities it provided me to grow as a person, I was drawn to exercise and sports science which ties my passion for helping people with my interest in health and fitness. I am excited to deepen my knowledge and learn both the theoretical and practical skills needed to provide assistance and deliver programs with the purpose of improving sport performance, as well as general health and fitness. You moved from Sydney to Charles Sturt Port Macquarie for your studies and live on campus in the student village as Resident Leader. What has been the most surprising and enjoyable element of being a part of the regional on campus community? My time living on campus here at Charles Sturt has been the best two years of my life. As much as it sounds cliché, I have never regretted my

102 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

decision for a moment. The opportunities that being part of this community have provided are unmatched to anything I have ever experienced. Moving to a place I had never been to was daunting, but from the minute I moved in I felt at home. I have built my independence and resilience, and really learnt to throw myself out of my comfort zone and into any opportunity. That led to me being offered a role as a Student Ambassador for Charles Sturt University after only a semester of uni, allowing me to represent Charles Sturt and be a face for the Campus that has provided me with so much. This year I was fortunate to be a Resident Leader alongside my role as a Student Ambassador. I wanted to be able to give back to the residents’ community and help foster a safe and supportive environment for all students whereby each person feels comfortable to grow and reach their potential whist ensuring that a strong sense of community is established. How will your studies and placement experiences help you contribute to creating solutions to current challenges faced in the industry/community? Throughout the past two years studying Social Work and completing 100 hours of placement, my awareness has definitely broadened, and I believe that I have strengthened my interpersonal skills to work with people in vulnerable positions, ensuring empathy and open communication. This has helped me grow as a person, and I will take the skills I have developed into my new course to make the most of the opportunity to study something

that I am passionate and excited about. Through studying exercise and sports science, my goal is to look at the physical health patterns across Australia and work to improve affordable and accessible fitness opportunities.Focusing particularly on rural areas, not only to improve physical health and wellbeing, but also with a strong focus on the benefits for mental health. You represent the university across many leadership, university and community events including your role as the Student Market Ambassador for the Sunrise Campus Markets. What has been the highlight of supporting the delivery of this on campus community event? I have loved being involved in the Sunrise Campus Markets as I have been able to engage with the broader community and help promote engagement and connection between Charles Sturt University and the broader community. The atmosphere of the markets is unmatched, and it’s so exciting to have such community based markets right on our doorstep at the uni. I think being able to help promote engagement from uni students, particularly those who are in residence, can really help draw away from any stressors, as students are able to come down on a Sunday morning and feel part of a community that is so different to the 24/7 university community. I think this is really important for a healthy balance, and for students, particularly those away from home, to be involved in something that has such a strong connection with the broader community. Thanks Alyssa!

The team at Port Macquarie RetireInvest would like to welcome Matt Buttsworth Financial Adviser to the team.

H

i Matt, you are the newest team member at RetireInvest here in Port Macquarie. Can you please introduce yourself to our readers and your background in the industry? It is great to join the RetireInvest team. I’ve worked in the finance sector for twenty years, most of them as a retirement planning specialist. We moved our family to Port in 2008 and I have been providing advice and building relationships throughout that time. During this time, I have had the good fortune to work with outstanding people who have mentored me and taught me invaluable lessons. particularly during periods of market downturns like the Global Financial Crisis and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. I have a passion for assisting clients achieve their retirement goals and know that the right advice today will make a positive difference to their future. What attracted you to this role and what are you looking forward to the most? I have known Simon and Sandra for 15 years having worked together previously. They are both excellent advisers whom I have the utmost respect for and when asked to join RetireInvest it felt like the band was back together. As the name suggests we are retirement focused and so whether it is helping someone navigate Age Pension, advising those approaching retirement on key considerations to best fund their income needs, continuing to service long standing clients or providing a local choice for those that have recently moved to the area I’m excited to work with the team at RetireInvest to obtain the best outcomes for our clients. What are your top 5 rules to live by in work and home life? 1. Love what you do. 2. Anything is possible provided you do the hard work. 3. Be open to feedback – positive and constructive. 4. Communicate clearly and honestly. 5. It’s all about building relationships.

M AT T B U T T S W O R T H

RETIRE INVEST

You have spent 20 years in retirement planning, can you tell us about the biggest changes that you have seen? The biggest change from my point of view has been technology. Twenty years ago clients would receive a statement once per year and now they have access to their portfolio daily via their mobile app or tablet. Increased longevity considerations. With increasing life expectancies we need to plan for longer retirements. Coincidentally, it has been 15 years since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and I saw first hand the impact this had on retirees. Many of my learnings about investments and positioning a portfolio for periods of market downturn came from this time and I take the analogy that if we fail to learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it in the future. This is probably over a longer period however the cost of living in retirement has changed during this time. I recall my grandparents being able to live off an Age Pension and yet these days it is near impossible for retirees to have Age Pension as their only source of income. Superannuation has played a far greater role in people funding their retirement and naturally as the cost of living has increased, more superannuation is required to fund a comfortable retirement. Can you describe your approach to financial planning? Identify the clients’ goals or objectives for retirement. Establish a timeframe for each goal or objective. Assess current financial circumstances. Determine income needs in retirement. Develop an investment strategy that aligns to the goals and time horizon.

Discuss any significant capital costs that form part of retirement (i.e. overseas travel, caravan etc.) Continual monitoring to adjust the plan if required. Develop long term relationships based on trust and open communication. What strategies do you recommend for retirement planning? This may sound obvious but the earlier you plan for retirement the better the outcome. There is no one size fits all as everyone’s lifestyle needs and retirement desires are different. The key to what we do as financial planners is identifying these needs and opportunities and applying the right strategy to help achieve these goals. The best strategy a retiree can employ is to consult with a retirement specialist as early as possible. How do you assess if a client is on track for their retirement goals? To assess if a client is on track for their retirement goals, I review their financial position regularly to ensure the existing strategy remains aligned. We can’t control the future and so it is important to be flexible and should circumstances change, be it personal or financial, then we discuss this and make any changes needed. Regular reviews enable us to make adjustments for life changes or market conditions. Thanks Matt. How can our readers get in touch with you? We would love to hear from anyone in need of advice and can be contacted at our office in Port on 02 6583 9748 or via email at admin@retireinvest.net

Y

ou have travelled the globe following your passion for technology and Artificial Intelligence. Can you share what started your journey in this field?

Ever since I was a little boy, I have been fascinated by the boundless creativity in technology and the speed of its advancement. This fascination with technology fuelled my desire to contribute to developments that enhance our quality of life. This curiosity grew over the years and led me to pursue study in science, specifically computer science, where I found my true inspiration in artificial intelligence. I immersed myself in top-tier AI education through degree and professional development programs at Monash, MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Stanford and LSE. These experiences acted as gateways into the realms of technology and AI - a passion that continues to grow to this day. What excites you about Artificial Intelligence? How can it be used to positively impact the world? To me, AI is just another way of saying “Change”. What really excites me about Artificial Intelligence is its potential to bring about positive transformation in our lives and tackle some of the world’s most

Dr. Anwaar Ul-Haq is an AI specialist changing the game in the regions by bringing the world of AI to Port Macquarie, with a global gathering of leaders in this ever-changing field. As a senior lecturer and researcher in Artificial Intelligence at Charles Sturt University, he leads a team of passionate academics and professionals who will host this exciting discussion and discovery – the very first time an event of its kind has been held in our region.

complex challenges. Whether it’s customising healthcare, fostering environmental sustainability or disaster management, AI holds this incredible power to drive positive shifts, particularly in regional communities. That’s the kind of real world impact I’m excited about; using AI as a force for good and positive change. From the hills of Pakistan to the beautiful shores of Port Macquarie (and almost everywhere in between), what inspired you to take the leap of faith to move to the other side of the world to pursue your dreams? I really love travelling. It’s like a magic wand that expands our view of the world, and so it’s tightly connected with my passion for learning. Throughout my life, I have always been on the move. It’s not just about going from one spot to another; it’s like taking a leap of faith based on my dreams. Checking out new places and different cultures is how I discover new things and push myself to do cool stuff in both my work and personal life. Your latest project DICTA 2023 is hugely exciting. It brings international experts, including the Vice President of META, from every corner of the globe together in coastal Port Macquarie to share their research and learnings in AI. How important is this four-day program for a

DR. ANWAAR

UL-HAQ regional community? I firmly believe that for Australian AI to flourish, a focus on our regional strengths is essential. Bringing international AI experts to our communities and engaging with local businesses is a pivotal step. DICTA, an annual AI conference in Australia typically held in capital cities, is making its debut for the first time in a regional centre in Port Macquarie. This ground-breaking event is set to draw 100 researchers from around the globe, creating a unique opportunity for our regional landscape. We have been able to secure high-profile keynote speakers like Prof. Yaser Sheikh, VP of Research at Meta, and Toby Walsh, Chief AI Scientist at UNSW AI Institute, among many others, to share their incredible insights. I am immensely grateful for your unending support and that of my university colleagues, and the services and support of our local community and industry. Our community has made bringing an event of this calibre possible and immensely impactful in Port Macquarie. You have recently been seconded to undergo a year of AI research in the field. Can you share what you are working on and how you hope it will make an impact? My focus spans various applied domains with a common thread of using AI for societal good.

One significant project involves detecting and diagnosing mental health disorders within the regional population of NSW, utilising AI to make healthcare more accessible and efficient. I am also working on an analysis of live data on social media to detect signs of suicide ideation, aiming to identify and intervene in regional Australia’s suicide prevention efforts. I’m also developing conversational robots tailored for the elderly, enhancing companionship and support. I’m also actively working on designing an AI system that can transparently explain its decision-making process, ensuring ethical and accountable AI practices. What are some of the exciting AI projects you have worked on in your career? I’ve worked on impactful AI projects. Starting with my PhD, I focused on detecting human actions in video using AI and using AI to address everyday challenges, particularly in agriculture and healthcare. One of my major projects used AI drone thermal imagery for pest animal detection in crop fields. This innovative approach aimed to enhance pest control and optimise farming practices. Another project focused on detecting animals in bushfire zones, contributing to wildlife conservation efforts during emergencies. A project close to my heart is the development of Mindful GPT, a chatbot tailored for mental health therapy. Drawing inspiration from the ChatGPT model, Mindful GPT was designed to offer support and assistance in mental wellbeing. What has been your greatest challenge

and greatest achievement during your time in the field of AI? One of my most significant challenges has been navigating the ever-accelerating pace of AI technological evolution. Staying abreast of the latest advancements and ensuring my work has relevance in a rapidly changing landscape requires CONSTANT adaptation and commitment to continuous learning. On the flip side, my greatest achievement has been contributing to projects that bridge the gap between AI and real-world. Whether developing innovative solutions for agricultural challenges or creating mental health solutions, each project represents a tangible application of AI to improve lives and address societal issues. The ability to translate theoretical knowledge into practical, meaningful outcomes has been immensely fulfilling and marks a significant milestone in my AI journey. How instrumental have sages and critics been in the evolution of your career? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you? With their wisdom and guidance, my mentors have provided invaluable insights, helping me navigate challenges and make informed decisions. Mentors like Prof. Anwar. M. Mirza have taught me to embrace feedback, even when challenging, which has been central to my growth as a professional and as a researcher. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from both, is that there is always room for refinement and growth in every project and process. We must continuously adapt and learn at every step!

You and your wife Mina have raised your family here in Port Macquarie – how do you balance the demands of a global career with precious time spent with family? Maintaining a work-life balance is paramount. While work is my professional passion, family holds immense importance. My gorgeous wife, Mina and beautiful kids (Asil, Arham and Hiba) are my pillars of happiness and truly deserve my time and attention. Given my wife’s commitment as a banker, we need flexibility in managing our time. Occasionally, working from home and adapting schedules has been essential to align with the demands of both our professions. Moving to Port Macquarie has been a blessing. The friendly community and beautiful weather make it an ideal place for our family. It’s not just where we live; it’s become a home where we all thrive together. What is your future vision of AI? My vision for AI is to demystify it and make it accessible to everyone. This involves breaking down complex concepts and making them understandable to industry and community. Currently, I’m authoring a book for O’Reilly Publishers on No-Code AI solutions. These solutions empower anyone, even without programming knowledge, to build AI solutions for businesses. I’m also passionate about making AI accessible to school kids. I firmly believe that for AI to integrate and transform future generations seamlessly, the journey should begin at school. Thanks Anwaar. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 105

i Angie. Can you tell us a bit about your role with the library and when you started there?

I originally began as a trainee; this was a great opportunity to combine academic studies with practical on the job experience. Building connections with the community was a natural fit and after completing my degree, I was fortunate to secure the position of Marketing and Outreach Librarian. Forests of the NSW Mid North Coast

Why visit NSW State Forests? Because State Forests offer the widest diversity of naturebased recreation, sporting and leisure activities available. We spoke with Leah Moncrieff, Partnerships Leader for the Mid North Coast, with Forestry Corporation of NSW’s Tourism and Recreation Team.

L

eah, tell us about some of the activities that are helping to raise the profile of NSW State Forests as a recreation destination. NSW State Forests are particularly unique as visitors can experience nature-based and ecotourism experiences ranging from camping, horse riding, citizen science, hunting and bushwalking to anything else you can think of, including 4WDriving and trail bike riding – for free. By providing visitor areas and allowing various activities in forests, we are supporting the conservation efforts of other public lands whilst also giving people places to play and stay in forests, which is so important to our health and wellbeing these days. Tell us more about forest destinations for visitors to the Mid North Coast. We have some beautiful, pristine visitor areas within the Mid North Coast, and our image library tells the story better than I ever could. We offer visitor day use areas, campgrounds, BBQs, swimming holes and bushwalks, all geared towards enjoying the simple life, and as a get away from the regular hum-drum. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy the ever-changing scenery of NSW State Forests? Some of my recommended areas are : Coopernook HQ. A large flat camping area,

not far from the Pacific Highway, just north of Taree in Coopernoook State Forest, with drop toilet facilities and electric BBQs, handy to both Port Macquarie and Taree for visitors. Good for an overnight stay or for a few days as a base for exploring the area. Swans Crossing. Very popular with families, on the edge of Upsalls Creek in Kerewong State Forest where you can enjoy a dip on a hot summer’s day. Swans Crossing includes a nature playground, walking track, toilet facilities and a large area where families can play safely away from traffic. Old Bottlebutt. Home of the largest Bloodwood tree in the southern hemisphere. Old Bottlebutt (Corymbia gummifera) can be found at the end of a short walking track through the forest. The visitor area provides toilets and a large, sheltered picnic area great for a day trip and picnic for those out-of-town visitors. Number 1 Tower. Site of the former Bellangry Fire Tower, with sweeping views of the Wilson River catchment right to the coastline. Popular with birdwatchers and a great spot for a picnic. Easily accessible from Hastings Forest Way. Wild Bull and The Bluff. These two small gems are both located in Mount Boss State Forest 1 km apart. They are beautiful examples of mountain campgrounds on the banks of the

Wilson River. Are there any new visitor areas being planned? Guulabaa – Place of Koala, Cowarra State Forest. Guulabaa – Place of Koala in Cowarra State Forest is a new tourism precinct close to the Pacific Highway, between Port Macquarie and Wauchope. Guulabaa is a very special partnership project, between Forestry Corporation of NSW, Koala Conservation Australia (KCA), Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council, WildNets and Hello Koalas. For now, Guulabaa is a great place for the kids to come and enjoy WildNets treetop experience or have their photo taken with The Big Koala sculpture. Coming soon is the Koala Wild Breeding Centre (first of its kind in the world) and the Bunyah Café and Art Gallery are future attractions. Watch this space! What’s your take home message for visitors to Mid North Coast? Come and have a free camping holiday in our State Forests, bring your dog, and experience nature in all its glory! THE G IFT T H AT K EEPS ON TAK ING As we launch into the silly season, it doesn’t mean we have to go silly with our spending!

A

ccording to a survey conducted by Finder earlier this year, 49% of Australians racked up Christmas debt after last years festivities. According to the research 1 in 3 Australians would take up to 5 months to repay the debt whilst 8% would take 6 months or more. This is not a great way to start your new year, especially if one of your new year’s resolutions is to save money in 2024. By overspending you could be unintentionally sabotaging your New Year’s Resolution before you have a chance to bring it to fruition. So, what are some ways you can set yourself up for Christmas? Make a list and check it twice! Make a list of all those loved ones who you are wanting to purchase gifts for which will help you to set your budget. Hints: Suggest a secret Santa so that you are buying for one family member, rather than the whole family. Make a gift yourself or think about a thoughtful gift that won’t break the bank (like a family photo or mug). Set a budget I know this doesn’t sound like much fun but

setting a budget per gift is a great way to forecast your total spending and help you save enough money to buy gifts without the need to put them on credit. Remember to include the Christmas lunch in your budget; that is a one off expense and over and above your general weekly shop. Also include your upcoming holiday, if you’re lucky enough to be having some time off and any spending money that you will need. A great way to estimate is to give yourself a daily spend allowance. Track your spending Track your spending to ensure that you are on budget and not spending more then you set out to. Some internet banking platforms will group expenses for you or you can also print your statements and colour code your expenses the old fashioned way. Whatever method you choose, tracking your spending this year will help you to get ahead of the game for next year too.

lowest interest rate or fees. If you can, stick with 1 card or 1 facility rather then spreading the debt across multiple cards. Get ahead of the game for next year. Once you have tracked your spending, get ahead of the game and set your budget for next year. Divide your total budget by 52 for weekly amounts, 26 for fortnightly amounts or 12 for monthly amounts. It is best to save in line with your pay, so put away a little each week, fortnight or month to ensure that you will have the right amount for next year. So what happens if you do overspend this Christmas?

Avoid putting purchases on credit where you can.

If you do rack up debt this Christmas, then be sure to reach out to your bank or broker who may be able to tailor strategies to help you get back on track. Don’t let it get too bad before you speak to someone about it. With comprehensive credit reporting in full effect, late or missed payments will show on your credit file for 24 months and could affect your ability to obtain credit in the future.

I know that this may be a little difficult for some of us being so close to Christmas if you aren’t as prepared as you had hoped. If you are planning on using credit this Christmas then try and use the facility that has the

EMBR ACING THE BEAUTY OF NATUR AL FIBRES IN TEXTILES FOR A CALM AND PEACEFUL INTERIOR

mbracing the beauty of natural fibres in textiles for a calm and peaceful interior in today’s fast-paced world, the pursuit of serenity and peace is more important than ever. One often overlooked way to bring tranquility into your home is through the use of natural fibres in textiles. Materials like rustic linens, raw silk, flax, and ramie possess a unique ability to infuse your interior with a sense of calm and beauty that is both timeless and comforting. What’s the appeal of natural fibres? Natural fibres, as the name suggests, are derived from plant or animal sources. They have been used in textiles for centuries, prized for their durability, breathability, and ability to create a connection with the natural world. Here’s why these materials are perfect for cultivating a serene interior. 1. Rustic Linens - Linen is a classic natural fibre that has been cherished for generations. Its textured surface and subtle variations in colour give it an earthy, rustic charm. Linen curtains, tablecloths, and bedding can transform a space into a serene retreat. Linen is a hollow fibre, which gives it a unique insulating characteristic. It is warm and cosy in the cooler months, whilst the fabric’s natural breathability also ensures a comfortable and cool environment, that is perfect for summer. 116 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

2. Raw Silk - Raw silk, known for its irregular texture and slight sheen, exudes a quiet elegance. This luxurious fabric is often used for drapes, pillow covers, and upholstery. Its natural lustre reflects light gently, creating a calming ambience in your interior. Raw silk also has temperature-regulating properties, making it suitable for various climates. 3. Flax - Flax is the source of linen, but it deserves its own mention for its versatility. Linen derived from sustainable flax fibres is not only eco-sensitive but also exceptionally strong and durable. Incorporating flax derived textiles into your home, such as linen slipcovers or cushion covers, can give your interior a relaxed, lived-in feel that promotes peace and comfort. 4. Ramie - Ramie is a lesser-known natural fibre but one that’s gaining popularity for its resilience and sustainable qualities. It’s similar to linen in texture but has a unique lustre and drape. Ramie textiles can be used for upholstery, table runners, and even clothing. Their natural sheen and texture add depth and character to any space. Ramie is used extensively in Japan. Cultivating Peace and Serenity So, how do these natural fibres contribute to a sense of calm and peace in your interior? Connection with Nature: Natural fibres have an innate connection to the outdoors, whether through plant or animal origin.

This link to nature helps create a soothing environment that can ground you in the midst of life’s chaos. Timeless Beauty: Natural fibres possess a timeless appeal. Their earthy textures and neutral colours never go out of style, providing a sense of stability and comfort. Breathability: Many natural fibres are breathable and moisture-wicking, ensuring that your space remains comfortable year round. They help regulate temperature, which is essential for relaxation. Durability: These fibres are renowned for their durability and longevity. Investing in textiles made from natural fibres means you’re creating a serene space that will stand the test of time. The Verdict… Incorporating textiles made from rustic linens, raw silk, flax, and ramie into your interior is just one simple, yet effective way to create a tranquil oasis within your home. These natural fibres offer a unique blend of timeless beauty, connection to nature, and comfort, making them the perfect choice for those seeking peace and serenity in their living spaces. Add to that the fact that textiles and materials with good conductive and wicking properties are thought to be excellent choices for people with sensitive skin conditions or allergies, it’s no wonder natural fibres are so popular.

Newton SHUTTERS, BLINDS & AWNINGS

Welcome to our first column in FOCUS – we are really excited to now be a regular contributor to this magazine and be part of our beautiful community. With the last month of the year well and truly upon us, let’s give thought to those New Year’s resolutions that might be circling around in your head.

F

itness, health and money goals are normally at the top of a must-achieve list. But what about your home? Let’s take a minute to think about how you want to feel when you enter your home, what you want to improve, what you can afford and what will make the biggest impact in your space. TRENDS: Looking ahead - What we can expect ... In 2024, arguably the biggest design trend will be a focus on individuality - we are expecting to see customers looking for softness and colour within their homes. Homeowners are wanting to create a space that feels fun and sometimes quirky – we are seeing a shift away from the bright white and grey interiors which have dominated in recent years. The trend is very much about layered colour schemes, textures, playful designs and character, character, character. All the while consumers are keeping sustainability front and centre. Sustainability is more achievable than anyone is probably aware when it comes to window furnishings. With common fabric options now including organic cotton, recycled polyester, full or blended linen, we even have fabrics made from plastic bottles. Internally the SOFT look is achieved using curtains, soft romans, verishades, retro design blinds, vision blinds, and cellulars.

knowledge when helping you select what is best

In 2024 Australians will continue to ‘merge the inside and out’, bringing the outdoors into your interior space is a trend that isn’t going anywhere. However, in contrast to the interior trends, colour is expected to take a backseat in outdoor spaces. The trend towards more subdued and neutral tones is gaining momentum. With so many outdoor solutions available we are spoilt for choice on how to improve the functionality and appearance of our outdoor areas. Thinking about your outdoor environment, you can consider Ziptraks ® folding arm awnings, retractable pergola roofs, fixed aluminum or polycarb style awnings, Mediterranean style eyelid awnings, automatic lock arm awnings, louvre roof styles, pivot arms, external shutters and more – all providing unlimited ways to utilise your outdoors throughout summer and winter.
