Welcome to the MARCH 2024 ISSUE of Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS.

Ihave worked for FOCUS magazine now for 13 years and I think this could be my favourite Women IN Business feature of all the 13 I have worked on. I really think our design team and amazing photographer have gone above and beyond for this one. Congratulations to this year’s cover stars, Hayley Dwyer and Alana Roper who are opening Muse Skin Clinic this month. We are so blessed to have so many talented business women in our area. Check out this incredible looking feature starting on page 58.

We also had the absolute pleasure of interivewing Erin Denham and Melinda Cockshutt this month to tie in with our Women IN Business month. These two women are super inspiring and we are so proud of

everything they do for this community. Make sure you read both of their interviews, they are both pretty amazing women.

Now don’t worry gentlemen, we haven’t forgotton about you! The World’s Greatest Shave is on this March and two of our local well knowns are jumping in. Strawny from Triple M and Katy-Lee from Port City, check out Strawny’s interview on page 28.

Eden Kaminski is an inspiring young man who moved to the Mid North Coast from Sydney and joined the Ag team at Camden Haven High School which began his journey in the Agriculture and Farming industry. His achievments in the last 12 months are nothing short of incredible and we were so lucky to chat with him. Congratulations Eden, a very

impressive young man. There’s a lot happening in our region over the next two months including the very popular Ride the Wave Festival, that I am told is shaping up to be a cracka of a weekend. The 114th Wauchope Show will take place, Dr Kristy will host her TOX Tails event and lets not forgot about all the International Women’s Day luncheons that will be held featuring many inspiring women as guest speakers and hosts. If you haven’t got a ticket to attend any of these events yet, make sure you do and lets keep suporting these events so that in return these people can keep supporting our town. From all the team at Focus we hope you love this edition as much as we do. Until next month.

ERIN DENHAM

Erin Denham was recently awarded Port Macquarie Hastings Citizen of the Year, AND IS A TRULY DESERVING RECIPIENT OF THIS AWARD! ERIN CO-FOUNDED MAKE A DIFFERENCE PMQ TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY DOING IT TOUGH, and she puts an incredible amount of energy and care into this important work.

Hi Erin, congratulations on being awarded Port Macquarie Hastings Citizen of the Year recently! What did it feel like for you to hear you’d been recognised by the community in this way?

It was a huge shock to be honest and very humbling. It was extremely special to be nominated alongside so many great organisations and extraordinary people doing great things for our community. It certainly was an exciting opportunity for

16 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

Rob, myself and the M.A.D. team to reflect on the positive impact Make a Difference is having in our community.

the different avenues of what they do and the projects you’ve been working on so far?

Our mission was very simple… to provide support to disadvantaged and marginalised people living in our community with the hope of restoring dignity, pride and hope...

Can you share with us a bit about the work you’re doing within the community?

We have over 200 volunteers that willingly give their time to operate our 8 free mobile

M.A.D. food shifts throughout the week. When Rob and I Founded the charity, our mission was very simple…to provide support to disadvantaged and marginalised people living in our community with the hope of restoring dignity, pride and hope to our most vulnerable without judgement. We also work collaboratively with other organisations in town to refer our friends to various services. We also help out each week at the Youth Hub to provide a breakfast as part of the Port Macquarie Hastings Homeless Network. We are currently looking to expand our shifts where demand has increased.

Make A Difference does many different things. Can you tell us about some of

Our first project involved raising $110,000 to bring Maddy the first regional Mobile Orange Sky Laundry van to Port Macquarie. We soon realised that there was a need for more accessible food services in town and so began our main priority to provide a free nutritious meal to people doing it tough in our community. Over the years our mission and vision has adapted to the community’s needs. The advantage of our vehicles is that we are mobile and can react when things arise, such as the devastating bushfires in 2019 and the 1 in 100 year flood that ravaged so many homes here.

Ironically, the charity had been homeless for five years operating out of our garages. Our latest project saw us collaborate with GIO, CBA, St Vincents De Paul and FRRR to build a three bay shed to house our vehicles and stock. We are fortunate to be on land beside the YP Space, another community organisation in town that does amazing work with our young people.

GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 17

What are you working towards with M.A.D? How would you like to see these projects continue making a difference in the local community?

Our plan at the moment is to consolidate the 8 food shifts we operate weekly. Having fed over 5000 adults and 1000 children in the past 9 months we know that we are helping take the pressure off people's lives.

M.A.D. has a vision to expand the service and hopefully have a shop front and office in Port Macquarie. This will provide a revenue stream for the charity and help sustain our operational costs. There is no secret that the housing crisis is having a huge impact on our communities. Looking into the future M.A.D. may look to build its capacity in this area and work alongside other service providers to help alleviate the strain on the housing crisis. There are other communities in and around Port

Macquarie who have successfully modelled this type of plan. Now all we need is some land central to the CBD to get the project moving. Your goals for ways to help the community here on the MNC have been evolving over the years and the support you help to provide has grown a lot. What keeps you motivated to keep going with all these projects?

That’s a great question and at times it is exhausting. However, a simple smile or conversation with one of our friends on shift makes it all worthwhile. Seeing the enjoyment and engagement our committee

and volunteers also get from volunteering is a great bonus of the service. We have so many amazing volunteers who love volunteering for the charity. Everyone has a shared common goal to help anyone in need. There is something very special about the human spirit and we see it play out on shift all the time. There have been moments of loss and heartbreak but there have been so many moments of happiness and joy. We love what we do and hope to be able to keep the charity going well into the future.

Ride The Wave festival was created as part of the fundraising efforts, can you give us a sneak peak at what we might

expect from this year's festival?

RTW is our annual fundraiser and apart from being a week full of epic fun, its success is crucial to the viability of the charity. We are super excited to welcome back over 300 surfers and skateboard riders, some of whom keep coming back year after year. New to the line up this year is our RTW School Surf Competition and Ride the Sound Wave Kids featuring ARIA Award winners Teeny Tinny Stevies. Of course, what makes up this truly unique festival for a difference is our Ride the Sound Wave music festival featuring Xavier Rudd as the headline act. It doesn’t get much better than this…Surf, Skate, Beats all in the one weekend. There truly is something for everyone!

Tik Tok, Insta or Facebook. Tickets can be purchased through the website or through Ticketebo. We were a sell out last year so don’t leave buying your tickets to the last minute.

How else can the community get behind these projects and show their support?

We are super excited to welcome back over 300 surfers and skateboard riders, some of whom keep coming back year a er year.

There are a few ways the community can get behind M.A.D. and RTW. Firstly, you can like, share and comment on our posts and share the love; get your friends and family together and buy tickets to RTW, volunteer with us on shift or at RTW and finally if you are time poor perhaps you are in a position to donate to M.A.D.

Have you got any more plans in the works for the year ahead and beyond?

Where can we keep up to date on Ride The Wave news or get tickets?

Head on over to our Ride the Wave Festival website for all the info or check us out on

Keep doing what we love doing – locals supporting locals. Thank you for your support everyone. Port Macquarie is one amazing town.

Thanks Erin.

Ride the Wave is heading into its 4th year. What are you most looking forward to about the 2024 event? We are keen for a sea of people to attend Ride the Wave this year! The festival has something for everyone! We can’t wait to see a full house at Ride the Sound Wave Music Festival,Town Beach swamped with spectators for the Ride the Wave Surf Pro, the skate bowl full to the brim cheering on skate competition competitors, families enjoying the activities for kids and shoppers filling the markets!

Tell us what you and the team have in store for Ride the Wave 2024. The set has certainly rolled in for Ride the Wave 2024! We aim to continue the coastal family vibe that was so well received last year with the addition of Ride the Sound Wave Kids headlined by the Teeny Tiny Stevies and the Ride the Wave Collective featuring the VW Combi Classic! We hope that these two events in particular will open the festival more to families and the general public. In addition Dingo Spender (from Mama Kin Spender) will lead a Wild Man Choir Workshop and Danielle Curana (Mama Kin Spender) will provide an insight into writing by leading a Creative Writing workshop. Ride the Sound Wave ticket holders can register for both workshops. How can attendees participate or get involved in the festival? The Ride the Wave Festival functions as the annual fundraiser for local charity Make a Difference (M.A.D.)

Ride Wave THE

whose mission is to support those doing it tough in our local area. The best way to get involved and have a direct impact on the sustainability of this local charity is to purchase a ticket for Ride the Sound Wave Music Festival and/or Ride the Sound Wave Kids. Alternatively, get on down to Town Beach Park (Alban Place) on Saturday 6th April, donate, buy food and coffee from M.A.D., support the markets and other family activities and spread the word to all you know that this is a festival with a difference and is worth attending!

Tell us about how Ride the Wave has grown in the last 3 years and what you are most proud of. The feedback we have received from the public, attendees, sponsors and local businesses is that Ride the Wave 2023 hit the mark. The coastal family vibe was well received, the surf and skate comps drew competitors and their families from along our coastline and interstate, the lineup for Sound Wave headlined by Boy & Bear and The Waifs drew an audience from far and wide with all of this set in the picturesque surrounds of Town Beach, Port Macquarie. We love that this festival has grown to bring so many people together from all over to support our local community.

You have another great line up of music artists, tell us a bit about who will be performing and when our readers can watch them. New in 2024 is Ride the Sound Wave Kids featuring the Aria Award winning Teeny Tiny Stevies onstage from 10:30am11:30am on Saturday 6th April. This concert,

set prior to the main event, is designed to attract young families to the festival and provide toddlers and primary aged children access to music tailored specifically for them. Gates open for Ride the Sound Wave Music Festival at 2:15pm later the same day. Round Mountain Girls will have punters instantly on their feet dancing and boot scooting, followed by the sometimes raw yet beautifully crafted music of Mama Kin Spender, singer songwriting sensation Emily Wurramara, coastal folk duo The Dreggs and culminating in the mercurial Xavier Rudd from about 8:30pm.

Why is it so important not only for the community but businesses to get behind local festivals like Ride the Wave? Who would you like to thank for helping and getting on board for this year’s festival? Make a Difference witness the impact that an increase to the cost of living is having on those already living on the edge in our area. We recognise that an investment in a local festival from community members and businesses might not be high on the list of priorities, however, Ride the Wave is a festival with a difference in that sponsorship of, and attendance at, the festival not only ensures that it remains a regular part of the cultural fabric of our community, but also has a direct impact on restoring dignity to those doing it tough in our area.

Come and Ride the Wave with us. We can’t wait to see you there! For more details go to www.ridethewavefestival.com.au

ARTIST of the MONTH

Tony Wi iams

22 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

Hi Tony. Can you share a bit about your artistic journey? What inspired you to start creating?

I started painting in acrylics about 2003. I had been a potter for the previous 25 years and had my own studio and kiln and everything you need to be a potter. I started while I lived in Darlington in the inner west of Sydney in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, an interesting time to live there!

Then when our kids were little we moved to the Blue Mountains and I gradually developed my studio practice at my home in Wentworth Falls. You know how life can change dramatically. That relationship fell apart and in 2000 I left the house in Wentworth Falls and began the next phase of my life. At this time I was making fine white stoneware vessels and painting and glazing them on that white background. A good introduction to painting with acrylics on white canvas! The move involved dismantling my studio and for a couple of years I did nothing creative, and moved back to the inner city, to Newtown, which I loved. One day in King Street I got the urge to do something

One day in King Street I got the urge to do something creative again and so I bought some canvas, paints and brushes and o I went. I’ve been painting now for about 24 years or so.

creative again and so I bought some canvas, paints and brushes and off I went. I’ve been painting now for about 24 years or so and I have my studio in Crestwood. I love living in Port Macquarie in my spot opposite the beautiful wetland; different to Newtown but probably better for me at this stage of my life!

I did the Certificate IV in Fine Arts at Meadowbank TAFE and I’ve done a few workshops over the years, including recently with Idris Murphy and Ross Laurie. I think they are both excellent abstract Australian Landscape painters; as is Elizabeth Cummings' beautiful depiction of the Australian landscape, and Ann Thompson’s abstract work. Fred Williams and Tony Tuckson are also favourites.

What are your preferred mediums to use?

Apart from my ceramics and sculpture earlier, I now paint in acrylics. I enjoy acrylics for the immediacy and vibrant colours. Acrylics suit my temperament!

How would you describe your art style?

I would describe my style as “abstract landscape with a bit [or a lot] of what is occurring on the canvas”. I love the process of working with acrylics because I am able to experiment with whatever colours or brushes I am working with and get new shapes. I eventually work into a piece using what is emerging on the canvas as I work, painting over an area, using different shapes, sometimes a bit of collage, to respond to what is emerging. Eventually a picture begins to emerge that is pleasing and interesting. Well, that’s the aim!

Continued over...

GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 23

How do you typically begin a new piece of artwork? Do you have a specific process or routine that you follow?

When I am beginning a new canvas I typically begin by making some marks all over the canvas, using a light wash or crayon to ‘free up’ my work. Then I add lines and patches of colour, usually with a very hazy idea of ‘sky’ or ‘horizon’ and some foreground marks. These can all be painted over but they begin to give some structure to the image. Then I continue adding lines and colours until the overall image begins to take a pleasing shape. I don’t try to paint an actual image as such, I’m not good at ‘proper’ reproductions, I like to leave that to other more capable artists! I like the adventure of discovery and creativity and hope that comes out in my work.

Can you discuss any recurring themes in

your work? Where do you draw a lot of your inspiration from?

I have always drawn a lot of my themes and inspiration from my love of the Aussie bush, its hills, swamps, rocks, plants, deserts and endless variety of life and landforms. Over the years the landscape of Central Australia, its colours and forms, have had a big influence. As has the bush, hills and landforms of the mountains, and more recently the coastal wetlands of the Mid North Coast.

I don’t try to paint an actual image as such, I’m not good at ‘proper’ reproductions, I like to leave that to other more capable artists! I like the adventure of discovery and creativity and hope that comes out in my work.

of the MONTH

How do you think your style or practices have evolved over time?

My work has changed over the years as I am influenced by the work of other artists in the field of abstract impressionist art. It’s interesting to be able to really feel influenced by others approach to art making in the abstract field, and use this to gradually incorporate this new approach into my own work and see how it develops. It’s a process of experimenting with different approaches and seeing what works for me and making the work distinctly mine.

How do you feel about the local arts community here in Port Macquarie, do you exhibit or get involved with any workshops or events? How has it been different to being in the inner city?

24 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

conventional in their approach. I’ve had work in a physiotherapy practice in Lake Road which has been great. Since I’ve lived In Port over the last five years I’ve had a couple of exhibitions at South West Rocks Community Art Gallery which were quite successful. I’ve sold through Instagram and my website and even have a work in a local dental practice in Gordon

Street! Yes, living and working and selling in the inner west of Sydney was more rewarding in the way the work was accepted, but hey! This is a new life! I’ve had a couple of ‘open studios’ that I put on facebook and these were also successful. I’m always really heartened when I see my work on others’ walls and know they are appreciating my work. Looking ahead, do you have any upcoming projects or exhibitions that you're particularly excited about? What can audiences expect to see from you in the near future?

I am planning a new exhibition with a fellow artist from Coffs Harbour, Rowena Post, at the South West Rocks Community Art Gallery in early 2025 and I’m working and exhibiting locally. I’m currently preparing work for the Rotary Club of Uralla 45th Art Exhibition and Sale in March and preparing work to enter the 42nd Great Lakes Art Exhibition in March/April 2024. I’m off to a Ross Laurie workshop in the hills behind Berry in March and so keeping busy! I'm also thrilled to have a painting accepted for the upcoming Northern Exposure Eight Exhibition at the Glasshouse Gallery from 11th May to 30th June this year.

I really love my sort of art, abstract and not easily defined, working at and making a response to the emotion of a piece, the shapes and colours and feelings evoked by the images, without using actual depictions of things and objects or people. I do find a lot of people do not respond to this style of art work. When I lived In Newtown I had a studio at the Lennox Street Studios for quite a number of years and the acceptance there of abstract art as a valid way of working was easy and open. Though there are a number of artists taking a more abstract approach to art making in the Mid North Coast I think we do have some way to go to openly accept this form of expression as legitimate art, but this is slowly changing. I do belong to the local Hastings Valley Fine Arts and exhibit my work with them. There are many fine artists at HVFAA but they are probably more

The Young Woman Competition (formerly Showgirl) has been a part of the Wauchope show for many years, tell us what this competition stands for and its importance. In 1962, twenty young female ambassadors entered the first Sydney Royal Easter Show's Miss Showgirl competition. Today it continues to play a significant role in the development of rural women and their communities.

At Wauchope the competition has been loved and supported for 58 years and continues to play an integral role in connecting our young women to the community and engaging them in volunteering and networking activities to boost their self confidence and provide a platform for personal development.

Please tell us about this year's entrants?

As entries haven’t yet closed, we are unable to introduce them. We have two levels of competition, Juniors (14-17 years) and Seniors (18-25 years). If you think this could be something you’d like to try or know someone who could use a confidence boost and the great opportunity to make some friends, please reach out to us via our facebook page,

I have recently made some adjustments to my hair and my mates aren’t loving it, so I thought I’d get rid of it on the proviso that I’m doing it for a

good cause!

For those that don’t know, can you give us a little run down on what The World’s Greatest Shave is all about and what they’re raising money towards?

I have recently made some adjustments to my hair and my mates aren’t loving it, so I thought I’d get rid of it on the proviso that I’m doing it for a good cause!

It’s raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The funds raised go towards research and supporting people with Leukaemia and their families.

Do you have a goal for this fundraiser or anything in particular you’re hoping to achieve?

I would really love to raise more than $10,000! I understand that the cost of living crunch right now is very real. I feel it myself, funds are very limited for people, especially in our neck of the woods. So any amount of money that people can

give would be fantastic is a bit unrealistic, it would be fantastic, and I’d appreciate any sort of support to help raise awareness. Every bit counts and I think my goal is still going to go a long way for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Is there going to be any particular fanfare or celebrations on the day you do the shave?

Yes! We are going to have a big show for Triple M at the Port City Bowling Club on Saturday the 9th of March. It’s going to be a

big event down there, with music, all the fanfare, and then we’re going to shave it all off; my hair I mean. There’s going to be others joining me shaving their rugs off too with a few more people jumping on the bandwagon and joining the team. We’ll have to leave a little bit up to the imagination to build a little bit of suspense, shall we say, so come on down and get amongst it, the more the merrier!

What reaction have you had from family and friends about the big shave?

My partner said to me, “Oh, do I get a say in this, because I’ll have to walk around with you!” The reception has actually been very encouraging. They are all encouraging me

and of course my partner is too! Although the initial reaction was mostly along the lines of ‘you’re going to look extremely ugly with a bald head!’ Lucky it’s for a good cause. Through doing the World’s Greatest Shave and getting this cause out into the public eye, what messages would you like this to send to those in the community dealing with a cancer diagnosis?

The main message I want to send out to the community is that if locals find themselves in a scenario where they or someone in their family are fighting something like leukemia, that there are many great local initiatives to help them with their mental health through this.

Things like Self Seen; the men’s mental health group, Port Macquarie Women’s Connect, and Lifeline Mid Coast do great work in this space. I want them to always know that there is someone to help them through, because this is such a horrible thing for any family to have to face. But there are so many great local people that put their spare time into helping others and there is more than enough support here for them. I think that a lot of people forget that, especially when they’re in that time of need. It’s probably not in the forefront of their mind, but I just want to remind them that we’ve got a really supportive community here.

Where can people find out more about your World’s Greatest Shave event and/ or make donations?

The Triple M Mid North Coast social channels, and triplem.com.au/midnorthcoast is where all of the links are. They can follow along through there, make donations, and if they’re game they can join the team and, you know, make their partners upset because they’ve got ugly heads too!

Thanks Strawny!

Melinda

From a lawyer in the Australian Public Service, to working in finance, running a swim school, to coaching athletes around the world, her careers have been diverse. At the centre of it all is the strong desire to be part of, and to help create, a strong and thriving community. Her latest project, the Heart of Courage, is a continuation of her core values and is aiming to make a real impact in our area.

How long have you lived in Port Macquarie

I moved to Port Macquarie in 2007 after coming in 2006 to compete in the Port Macquarie Ironman. I soon jumped right into community activities, joining the Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club as a volunteer lifesaving member as well as volunteering at a number of other organisation that helped people in the community and have recently joined the SES. I continued to coach athletes from around the world and started an Ocean Swimming Group (the Port Macquarie Sea Dragons). I currently work in the Disability Sector, working with athletes to achieve their goals.

What is the Heart of Courage Project Bec Hoschke (co-founder from Sydney and great friend) and I started this adventure last September. We want people to take a leap of faith with themselves, be courageous and set a lifetime fitness goal. We want community

sport and fitness events and groups to be created and thrive and we want people to stay in their community and have access to health programs and services and the latest treatments. We want to raise $100,000 by June this year. We will give the funds to the Hastings Cancer Trust to distribute to programs and services on the Mid North Coast.

We want to raise $100,000 by June this year. We will give the funds to the Hastings Cancer Trust to distribute to programs and services on the Mid North Coast.

Why is it important to you that people set a lifetime fitness goal?

No one can go through life without a number of adverse events happening to them. I am a strong believer that if you have a strong and healthy body, you give yourself the best chance to overcome health issues. If you are involved in your community, you have a great support network that helps you get

through. Being active is great for your soul. I want to help create a community and support people to set those goals.

I know many of you are thinking it, but I don’t do big exercise events. How can I get involved?

You do not need to do a big event to be involved, lifetime fitness can be many things. It could be walking, doing TaChi, Pilates or home gym. It can be epic as well. Heart of Courage is all about getting people to be active and aiming to be strong for whatever life throws at you.

The Heart of Courage project also has a focus on First Nations health?

Yes. We want to see equal health outcomes for all Australians. People affected by cancer who live in regional areas have greater

treatment and care, and

poorer outcomes, than those living in major cities. Indigenous Australians have a slightly higher rate of cancer diagnosis and are approximately 40 per cent more likely to die from cancer than non-Indigenous Australians. The mission of our project responds, by raising vital funds to help improve regional cancer outcomes. 50% of funds will be dedicated to First Nation cancer research, prevention and care, to address imbalances, improve indigenous cancer outcomes, and help close the gap.

our community services and programs and if we all do a little, we can raise a lot. You can volunteer for us at events, you can set a goal and fundraise if you want, or you can buy a ticket to one of our events or partner events. You can make a donation. https://tourdecure.grassrootz.com/heart-ofcourage/

What events do you have coming up?

We have really powerful memories of the story of Sadako and the 1,000 paper cranes. She was exposed to radiation at the age of 2 in World War 2 and died from leukaemia in her teens. During her treatment she made a goal to make 1,000 paper cranes in the hope that maybe her wish of wellness would come true.

What has the Heart of Courage project been involved with so far?

We are super proud to be well on our way to achieving our fundraising goal. We are currently at $60,000. We have partnered with the Beach to Brother Running Festival in Port Macquarie and the Hat Head Ocean Swim. We ran a Golf Day at the Wauchope Country Club and ran an 100x100m swim/team relay event. This event ran in multiple locations around Australia. We had a huge turn out at Port Macquarie, Hat Head, the Sydney Northern beaches and Goondiwindi! All to raise money for our area.

How can people get involved in the Heart of Courage project?

We would love you to get involved. We want everyone to get lifetime fit. We want to help

I would love to see you at the Gumboot Ball at the Old Butter Factory at Telegraph Point. Wear your best gumboots with your party outfit and come along for a great night out with Alter Ego on Saturday 16 March. Tickets here: tourdecure.grassrootz.com/heart-ofcourage/tickets

You can volunteer for us at the Port Macquarie Running Festival (Sunday 3 March) or at the Port Macquarie Ironman (3-5 May). Just drop us a line at heartofcourage.au@gmail.com, or you can pick your own lifetime fitness goal and fundraise for us. Drop us a line, we would love to hear from you.

I understand you are also aiming to help rejuvenate and revive our nature strips and bushland.

Yes. I am really really excited about this project.

The Crane is a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times. A tree is a symbol of strength, calmness and interconnectiveness. This project really sings to me, and what a difference we can make now and for future generations. You can donate here tourdecure.grassrootz.com/heart-ofcourage/1000-trees-inspired-by-sadakoand-the-1000-paper-cranes

Have you got your own Heart of Courage goal?

Yes. I can’t expect others to get outside their comfort zone, and not do it myself. Bec and I have set an epic adventure goal. We will be competing in the Ultraman in Noosa in May. It is a 10km swim, 420 km cycle, and 84km run - competing over 3 days. It is wayyyyyy outside my comfort zone and I have been training hard to ensure that I have fun on the day (and it is fun for my support crew).

We would love you all to be involved, you can find out more at heartofcourage.com.au or on our socials heartofcourage.au (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn). I hope to see you all soon!

Thanks Melinda.

Ifocus contributor.

Well here we are again… the much anticipated annual Women in Business feature showcasing the phenomenal female founders, entrepreneurs, leaders and all round movers and shakers of our region.

t’s an exciting edition where we can give a virtual high five to so many ladies who, daily, are working to make our region a better place, whether it be their contribution to small business, the medical and scientific industries, charity work or the arts to name a few.

With this in mind, I can’t help but reflect on the weekend that has just been. It’s mid February as I write, and I have just returned home from a buying trip (for my boutique) in Sydney. The vibe in Sydney was electric and I think I might have an inkling as to a massive contributing factor.

Pink Fever.

If ever there was a modern woman who lead from the front with her heart on her sleeve, you’d have to agree Pink would be right up there on top of the list. Love her or choose not to love her, she’s a woman who unapologetically stands up and speaks from her heart and in the meantime connects with and reconnects with so many people by doing so. It’s awesome to see a performer who speaks to multiple generations at once; all the while opening up avenues for conversations that often need to happen, but sometimes might not come as naturally to some as they

do to others.

Now I’m no celebrity, but I feel I can draw a comparison here… Being “out the front in business” so to speak can at times be a lonely journey, even for those of us who have a support team around us (paid or unpaid as the case may be!) but the reality is that not all women in business have that. Many often feel isolated, whether that be because they are diligently creating an empire from the spare bedroom with their online business or simply because their entrepreneurial choices are not understood by family or friends, who perhaps place higher value on the stability or perceived security of being employed in a “paid job”.

With this being the case, one thing that really stands out to me when it comes to women in business, is resilience. Whether we’re talking celebrity status or the Mum with a side hustle, there’s a girt and determination behind simply turning up and getting it done, day in,day out.

This is why this month’s edition of Focus is more important than ever. Phrases like “mental load” have emerged of late to try and describe the complexity of the invisible burden many women struggle to balance on a daily basis.

Now I’m not going to go down the potentially controversial rabbit hole of things being better in the “good old days” or that a modern woman can and should be able to “have it all” because in reality, what’s good and right for one, is often not good or right for another. We are all different. We want and need different things. I recently reviewed the 2023 Women in Business edition, and this is exactly what made it so special. Every single lady featured here on these pages has her own story; her own journey. Collectively they have faced challenges and triumphs, set backs and giant leaps forward.

For me, it all comes back to resilience. Anyone that knows anything about my journey into the world of small business ownership would know that it was far from plain sailing. But with unwavering support from family and friends and sheer grit and determination to trust my instincts I can sit here, with a level of experience and a hint of healthy pride, grateful to be included in such a fabulous collection of Women in Business in our region.

Now if you haven’t read each and every “WIB” feature yet, this is your cue to go and do so… I guarantee you’ll be inspired by what you read!

Hi Lola, could you share with us a bit about how you came to pick up a camera and what prompted you to start taking photography seriously?

I come from a musical family and my brother was having his first gig ever at The Terrace. I had been gifted a camera for Christmas a few years earlier, which my family had encouraged me to bring along to the show. I seized the opportunity to not only capture his performance, but every other performance that night. I couldn’t put the camera down for a minute. Following that night, I soon found myself immersed in the art of photography and from then on, I attended every gig in

Lola Willows is a 15 year old photographer who has grown up with a passion for music and a ending live shows. She has combined her love of photography and music by capturing performances both locally and all around Australia. She recently participated in Artwalk and currently has a photo displayed in the Glasshouse Gallery.

Port Macquarie, and I began to experiment with different techniques which were getting noticeably better photos at every gig. I gradually developed an understanding of different aspects like framing, camera settings, and post-processing. My activities soon expanded from Port Macquarie to Newcastle, Melbourne and beyond and with each event, I found myself increasingly more passionate about taking photos, along with learning all the parts that go along with producing a good photo. Photography soon became not only a hobby, but a means of expression and connection, prompting me to take my creative pursuits more seriously and unknowingly, embarking on a journey of continuous learning and growth.

So you mostly shoot musicians and live

performances, what initially drew you to this type of photography?

When I entered high school in 2020, I started playing instruments, initially picking up the bass guitar and later delving into drumming. As I explored various instruments to learn, I found myself inspirationally drawn to the bands from the 70s, 80s, and 90s and coincidently, along with their music, their iconic imagery resonated with me profoundly. I was captivated by how a single photograph could capture the essence of a band, making them almost God-like. This fascination with music and its visual representation naturally led me to focus my photography on musicians and live performances, where I could capture the energy and emotion of a live performance.

36 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

When legendary music photographer Sophie Howarth’s exhibition came to the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie in 2022, I was further inspired. The walls came to life with professional photos of live performances, portraits and promotional images for musicians and bands.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Being able to combine my love for music with my passion for photography is incredibly fun. It allows me to immerse myself in the world of music while simultaneously indulging in my creative pursuits.

One in particular of Kylie from Sydney 90’s band “Purr”, who was one of my Mum's friends. I was then lucky enough to travel, solo, at 14 years of age, to Thrashville, to photograph Kylie in her most recent band “Bitchcraft”. My photography resonated with music lovers, and I was soon travelling and photographing people all over the place, many on request. Bands started using my photos on their social media accounts, on their Spotify pages, posters and even their music releases. I knew what I wanted to be doing with my life.

In my photography, I gravitate towards a grunge look, often shooting in black and white with added grain. However, I also adapt my style to the different characteristics of each gig, for example if there are vibrant and colourful stage lights being used, I will incorporate that into my photos. I also have a series of ‘dark art’ photos that feature two of my friends, who wear black metal makeup, of which one was recently in the Glasshouse on exhibition.

What do you enjoy most about photography, and in particular music photography?

What I enjoy most about photography, especially music photography, is the ability to capture moments that hold significance for both the performers and their audience. I find happiness in providing musicians with photos they can use to promote their art. Additionally, I love attending gigs, the energy,

the raw emotion, and the communal spirit of the audience coming together to celebrate live music. As someone who finds joy in attending live performances, being able to combine my love for music with my passion for photography is incredibly fun. It allows me to immerse myself in the world of music while simultaneously indulging in my creative pursuits. Each gig presents a new opportunity to capture images, preserve memories, and moments of time of that particular performance.

GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 37

What are some of the challenges you face when taking photos of a live performance?

Several challenges arise when capturing photos of live performances. Firstly, being under 18 restricts my access to many gigs, as the majority of events are strictly 18 and above. From a technical standpoint, I often encounter difficulties when certain stage lights shine directly into the lens, hindering my camera's ability to focus and capture clear images of the performers. Additionally, navigating crowded venues can be challenging, as some attendees may think that I am trying to push in front when I am really just trying to get a few good photos and then move away. During most live music events most people are drinking alcohol and more than once I have had accidental spills onto my camera which does risk the functionality of my equipment.

Navigating crowded venues can be challenging, as some attendees may think that I am trying to push in front when I am just trying to get a few good photos then I will move away.

across Australia. Among the standout gigs both 2022 and 2023 Thrashville Festival was definitely a favourite. It’s small but curates great metal, punk and all heavier genre bands from all over Australia. Since it’s such an intimate vibe, I get the opportunity to capture closer photos of the band. Another stand out would have to be the iconic Janes Addiction at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre. I had a small camera with me and I took a few quick shots of them. One of those photos won the People's Choice Award at the Home at Roto Photography Exhibition “Shadows & Light”. One of my favourite bands to shoot is The Terry’s. The lead singer Finchy always gives me some cracking poses to work with.

photograph iconic bands such as Metallica and more recent acts like Sleep Token. Bands with dedicated fan bases and a commanding stage presence … they give me an indescribable feeling, like I’m capturing a moment in time, never to be repeated. I thrive on capturing the energy and intensity of live performances, particularly from artists who bring a powerful presence to the stage. I get excited by the opportunity to tailor my photography style to match the unique vibe and aesthetic of each band. Whether it's Metallica's legendary stage pyrotechnics or Sleep Token's atmospheric performances, I aim to take images that not only document the moment but also convey the essence of the music and the experience for the audience.

Looking ahead, what are some of your goals or dreams for your future as a photographer?

In the coming years, my aspirations as a photographer are centred around continuous growth and learning my craft. I'm eager to dig deeper into photography and expand my technical skills. A particular focus of mine is to collaborate with emerging bands, providing them with photos to help their promotional efforts and help them gain visibility in the industry. One of my biggest dreams is to have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate

You have been quite busy taking photos locally and all around Australia, can you tell us about some standout gigs you’ve photographed so far?

I've had the pleasure of capturing memorable moments at various events both locally and

One particularly rewarding experience was my collaboration with the Port Macquarie Hastings Council when I was commissioned to document a youth event. This allowed me to expand my photography beyond live music and practise my skills in capturing candid photos of people enjoying the day. What would be your dream job to photograph?

My ultimate dream job would be to

38 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

with my photography idol, Ross Halfin. His legendary work has inspired me greatly, and working alongside him would be an incredible honour and learning experience.

Another goal of mine is to immerse myself in the world of music photography by joining a band on tour as their official photographer. This would not only be an exciting adventure but also a chance to document the raw energy and behind-the-scenes moments of life on the road. I’ve been on a couple of smaller tours as an amateur photographer, which I really enjoyed. However, my ultimate dream, is to capture Metallica. Photographing such an iconic band would not only be a professional milestone but also a personal dream come true. Where can we check out more of your work or get in touch?

CRITICISM

The old saying rings true… you can’t please everyone.

In the restaurant game the ‘steaks’ are higher than in the normal world (sorry). Not only is there the complex symphony of elements that are supposed to come together perfectly in a restaurant, with immaculate timing and supreme quality -all delivered with panache by knowledgeable and personable people….but there is also the individual expectation of each and every guest. Each human individual has differing likes and dislikes, differing dietary requirements, and has entered the premises experiencing a variety of particular moods, appetites/levels of fatigue and states of health.

It can be said of so many things in life that perception is a subjective beast. How we view our experiences has so much to do with what’s going on in our own heads at the time.

Oftentimes it is when we reluctantly head out for dinner after a not-so-great day when we’re fatigued and overwhelmed, that we tend to place a significantly more negative slant on whether our steak was medium rare or not, or feel somewhat more annoyance that we might have had to wait a little longer for our drinks to be brought to the table.

Of course, happily the opposite can absolutely occur and a nice drink, some delicious food and the company of people we genuinely enjoy can

raise us way up the doldrums we walked in with and be an entirely life affirming experience! However there are just some days where it is impossible to be helped to feel any better by anything at all external and this is where the negative spiral can take over. At this point, everything appears bleak and lacklustre. You don’t like your table, in fact you don’t like your partner..let alone your starter and your cocktail. Your waiter is annoying, your wine took too long to arrive. There’s a draught blowing on you, the group to your left is being too rowdy, the dish you wanted to order has already sold out!

The list goes on….there’s a point where you truly lose the ability to move past this vortex of toxicity and that’s it. You see red and suddenly each and every problem in your life can be attributed to this one particular location you happen to be in right now….and boom, out it comes.

It’s crucial to emphasise that there are times when criticism is absolutely and completely warranted. There is an inexhaustible list of genuine reasons for complaint. And these should always be acknowledged and dealt with promptly and efficiently by management. Human error happens ridiculously often. Sometimes the people working for you are

having that not-so-great day themselves (which is why to always be kind to your waiter and everyone else you come across over the course of your day). Sometimes there’s a fly in your soup. Sometimes your table is really draughty and the table next to you is really annoying. And that is absolutely ok.

But sometimes, on certain days (I think we’ve all be there), there’s really pretty much nothing that can write the wrongs of what’s going on beneath the surface.

When it comes to choosing such a highly interactive experience as dining out, there’s a much higher inherent risk attached as your mood plays such an important part – you are required to be an active participant in the proceedings. There’s much more margin for error, more pressure on your own self to make the right choices and have to grin and bear the direct company of others, than a more passive entertainment experience such as say, going to a Taylor Swift concert. Maybe your terrible mood may actually improve as your only choice is whether to sing along, punch the air or not. And even if the risk is that you walk out hating Taylor forever…well luckily for her your bad review won’t make the slightest impact on her bottom line!

360 is back and heading out on Part 2 of his Back To Life Regional Tour this month! He will be performing at Finnian’s here in Port Macquarie on Friday 23rd March, so we had a chat with him ahead of the show to get you all the details!

What is it that initially drew you to rap music and to start performing, and when was the moment you realised you could make a career out of your music?

When I was a kid, I was always obsessed with music, like Michael Jackson and different pop stars and stuff. I got into the choir when I was in primary school, which was really cool. When I was about 14, I was skateboarding and all my friends’ older brothers were obsessed with hip hop So we just started stealing their CDs and listening to it all the time. We became obsessed with it and started rapping ourselves when we were about 14 and that’s sort of how it evolved over the years. It was really bad, it was horrible and very amateur sounding for many years. Then when I was about 18 or 19, me and Pez were working together and we started talking about how maybe we can do this as a proper career and actually go for it, so I quit my job and we just decided to go for it, all in!

the first part one of the regional tour. I’d been going to the gym a lot more and doing a lot of work on myself and by that stage all the nerves sort of disappeared and I felt a lot more comfortable. That was tough, but it was really good once I got past that because that was a scary little situation.

You hit the road on tour last year for part 1 of this Back to Life tour, how was it getting back up on stage performing after a bit of a break?

I actually did the first tour after about a five or six year hiatus, a few months before the first Part 1 of the regional tour and that was actually quite difficult. I thought I was going to hit the ground running and it was going to be sweet, but I had a lot of cobwebs and nerves that I had to shake off and it was actually so hard. It got to the point where I was questioning whether I could actually do it anymore, but by the end of it, I sort of started finding my feet a bit and found my groove on stage again. Then we did

Part 2 kicks off in March, what are you most looking forward to about this leg of the tour?

Well, there’s so many places I haven’t been! There’s all these places I’ve never actually played before and I don’t know how they’re actually gonna go, like I just really hope they’re gonna go crazy. I’m just keen to get out to all these new spots and give it a crack.

Can you tell us a bit about your most recent music, what’s been inspiring you and driving you to throw yourself into your music again?

Yes, so I had a big hiatus. Over the COVID period, I’d been in rehab and got out and spent a few years in this really dark place. The songs that I’ve been releasing over the last year were sort of just talking about that and I’ve wanted to make my return but I wasn’t really sure about what kind of sound I wanted to make. A lot of it was me trying different things and experimenting with different sounds and different types of beats and all that. The songs I’ve done over the last year were all just trying new things and now we’re in a studio actually working on a new album and getting it ready. I feel like I’ve found the sound that I want to be working on now and I’m ready to go.

You've been on a health and fitness, lifestyle journey the past few years, what effect has this had on your music and career?

I think when I write I’ve always written about stuff that I’m going through

personally, so it’s given me more to write about for sure. It’s given me a deeper understanding of myself as a person and being able to just put that down on songs and explore myself more, I guess. So yeah, it’s all still talking about personal experience, everything that I’ve gone through so far. I have been going on this huge journey of self discovery and trying to find myself so everything’s all about that at the moment.

You’ll be performing at Finnian’s here in Port Macquarie as your second show of the tour, what can we expect from the show?

Well, it’s a mixed bag. So we’ve got a bunch of old stuff that people love, the classics, all mixtape stuff, but we’ve also got all the stuff that I’ve been putting out over the last couple years as well as a new mixtape I dropped last year. We’re going to be doing a bunch of songs from that too, so it’s a fairly long set. It’s about an hour and 20 minutes to an hour and 30 and it’s sick. I have a great time performing this one.

Are there any specific rituals or routines you follow before hitting the stage?

Yeah, so back in the day it was drink a lot and do all sorts of stupid stuff. Now I have some tea, I meditate and I pray. I spend about an hour before just trying to calm myself down and just be as present as possible, and then get myself kind of fired up to be on stage. I’m not a very outgoing person naturally, I’m quite shy, so when I get on stage, I try to transform myself into something a lot more outgoing and I try to get myself in that mood.

Where can we get tickets for the Port Macquarie show?

I’ll be at Finnian’s on Friday 23rd March! Tickets to the Back To Life Regional Tour Part 2 are on sale now from 360music. com.au.

Yes! We even carry your groceries to your car...

Ally Friendship is a seasoned singer and performer who grew up on the Mid North Coast PLAYING SHOWS LOCALLY SINCE SHE WAS 14 YEARS OLD. SHE IS NOW THE FACE AND INCREDIBLE VOICE OF THE AUSTRALIAN SHANIA TWAIN SHOW which is hi ing the stage at Club North Haven on Saturday 23rd March! March!

PORT MACQUARIE

Hi Ally. Can you tell us a bit about your back story and how you got started as a musician?

Hi, yes I’d love to tell you how I got started.

I’ve always loved singing and performing, ever since I was a kid.

My sister used to rope me into putting on performances in front of the family and all of our parents' friends. We’d dress up as the Spice Girls and sing all of our favourite Spice Girls hits.

From the early age of 14, I was out performing in pubs and clubs, in duos mostly back then and gradually progressed into bands and have never looked back.

Interestingly enough, I actually started my career in music around the Mid North Coast.

I grew up in Wherrol Flat just outside of Wingham and performed all over Wingham, Taree, Forster, Old Bar and of course, Port Macquarie.

You’re going to be performing a Shania Twain show at Club North Haven on the 23rd March, how did you get into performing Shania Twain covers specifically?

I sang a lot of Shania’s songs back when I started out doing duos, so I’ve always been very familiar with most of her songs, especially

the “Come On Over” album.

About 7 years ago I was performing in a Meat Loaf show as the leading female vocalist and at the end of every show, someone would always come up to me and say “Geez you look like Shania Twain, you sound a little like her as well”.

I could never have built this show into what it is today without the incredible musicians who work so hard alongside me night after night to make it so amazing!

The band would make jokes about starting a Shania Show but honestly, I never thought anymore of it.

Then in 2020 when COVID first hit, I was approached by some friends who at the time were looking at putting together a ‘one off’ show. They asked if I’d be interested in playing Shania and I said yes!

I had no idea at the time how hard it would be to get a show of this size off the ground in the middle of COVID, but admittedly I aimed high right from the start.

My partner Tim always laughs at me and says, shaking his head, “You never look before you leap!” haha, It’s true ... .when I make a decision I’m like a bull at a gate and I give it everything I’ve got.

What do you enjoy most about these cover shows?

The costumes are incredibly fun and glamorous, the songs are amazing and the lighting show and visuals are wonderful! But most of all, I enjoy the company of every single person I get to share the stage with.

I could never have built The Australian Shania Twain Show into what it is today without the incredible musicians who work so hard alongside me night after night, to make this show so amazing!

A huge thank you goes out to, Luke Cuerden (Guitar), Reno Torrisi (Drums), Angus Steventon (keys), Maree Butler (Backing Vocals), Carina Haurua (Backing Vocals), Patricia McGuire (Wardrobe) and a special thanks to my Bass Player and partner, Tim Herbig. Running a show this size can be stressful and poor Tim has to put up with my meltdowns on and off stage, so I’d say he has the hardest task of us all.

He’s my rock and I get through it knowing that he's there by my side.

Continued over...

What can we expect from the show at Club North Haven? Are there certain songs that really get the crowd going?

You can expect incredible musicianship, a spectacular light show with visuals, colourful costumes, beautiful harmonies, fun, laughter and some singalongs! We know we’ll have the crowd up dancing, especially when we do “Man, I Feel Like A Woman”, “From This Moment”, “That

with me to perform, the harmonies are just beautiful.

You’re a very versatile artist, playing with bands as well as Duo shows covering a range of genres. Can you tell us a bit about some of the other work you do?

Don’t Impress Me Much” and “You’re Still The One”.

Do you have a favourite Shania song to perform?

I really love performing “Up”. I love this song because I can over dramatise the lyrics with my facial expressions. I also love “No One Needs To Know” as it’s the first song of the night where I invite my amazing backing singers out the front

Having fronted several bands I’ve mastered a diverse range of musical styles, but I definitely have a passion for rock and of course, country rock.

Through rock music, I’ve carved a successful career in the Australian music industry.

I’ve shared the stage with “The Screaming Jets” and “Shannon Noll”; I’ve played to 10’s of thousands at the AFL and I perform numerous charity

events raising money for families in the grip of cancer.

I’ve performed to sold out venues all across Australia with “The Australian Shania Twain Show” also with “Classic Rock Live” where I’ve had the honour of performing with the Southern Cross Symphony Orchestra, on numerous occasions all over Australia.

In late 2020 I was lucky enough to meet Premiere Australian Guitarist Peter Northcote, where I was invited to perform with him on his ISO Gigs which streamed nationally and internationally to great acclaim.

Having fronted several bands, I’ve mastered a diverse range of musical styles, but I definitely have a passion for rock and of course, country rock.

have written. I’ve even written some of my own stuff and recently started writing and recording originals with the guitarist from the Shania Show, Luke Cuerden. However, I truly do love a good live performance. There's no better feeling than being on stage and watching the joy and happiness that the entire band brings to the audience. Music brings people together, it’s a universal language. What we give to a crowded room through music, is why we love performing.

Could you share with us a bit about any plans or hopes you have for your music

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Peter on many more of his shows since 2020 to the present day.

Do you like to focus more on live performance or do you do recordings as well?

I have definitely done plenty of recording, be it putting my voice on ads, or singing originals that other people

career moving forward?

Moving forward I plan to keep writing and recording originals, while definitely continuing with live performances, but I’d really like to expand “The Australian Shania Twain Show” and make it even bigger and better than it is already. It’s definitely a dream of mine to take myself, the band and the show overseas one day.

EDEN KAMINSKI

Eden Kaminski is an inspiring young man who moved to the Mid North Coast from Sydney and joined the Ag team at Camden Haven High School which began his journey in the Agriculture and Farming industry. He has since excelled in this area, with a number of shows and awards now under his belt he intends to continue on this path as he finishes school.

Hi Eden. Has agriculture and farming always been something that interested you? Having not grown up on a farm, what first sparked your interest?

I'm not sure exactly what started the farming bug but I suppose it's just always been there since a young age. It all came along from the love for animals and caring for them and what better way to look after and care for animals everyday than to be a farmer. However it started getting really serious after moving to our first farm in Moorland on the Mid North Coast in 2016 from Western Sydney. Ever since then I've loved farm life and I haven't looked any other way because it is the most important industry, and with a growing global population we will always need more food. You’ve been competing in agriculture comps and cattle judging at shows etc, how did you get started doing that?

I got started showing cattle through the Camden Haven High School’s Ag Team competing in local Ag shows around our region and major steer shows like Wingham Beef Week and the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza in Scone. This has opened up and given me opportunities to attend and compete across the nation right from the Sydney Royal Easter Show to the Brisbane EKKA.

Can you tell us about some of the shows you’ve been involved in so far?

I got started showing cattle through the Camden Haven High schools Ag team competing in local Ag shows around our region and major steer shows like Wingham Beef Week...

I've been involved in running a couple of shows now. I'm the Beef Cattle Steward and Junior Vice President at the Camden Haven Show Society in Kendall. Last year

was our first year back after 6 years of floods and COVID with over 100 competitors and roughly 70 animals. Also assisting with RAS qualifiers at Taree Show and the major 5 day Hoof and Hook Carcass Comp at Wingham Beef Week where competitors participate in education, junior judging, parading and Intercollegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ) in the abattoirs. I'm also involved in a community program called Cultivate Ag where we promote and encourage kids to become part of agriculture and are able to provide them with opportunities like attending Ag Shows, Uni info/open days and other industry relevant events where kids can Come, Connect, Collaborate and Cultivate.

56 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
focus interview

You’ve done very well at some of these events, have there been any stand out moments for you?

Some standout moments were definitely:

• EKKA (Queensland Royal Show) when I won Grand Champion Parader out of over 300 competitors; that's definitely one to remember which has been my biggest achievement so far in my cattle showing career. It took hours of preparation, training, hardwork and dedication which all paid off in the end and winning Grand Champion Speckle Park Female for KJ Hill Speckle Park who I work for.

• Angus Youth Roundup held Tamworth in January 2024 receiving Top 5 in Junior Judging, Top 5 in Parading and Reserve Champion Herdsperson.

• Winning the New England Angus Breeders Scholarship through Angus Australia to attend a 3 day beef cattle assessment course to look at market specifications, structural correctness in stud cattle and trade/market cattle.

• 3 in ICMJ Primals at the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza.

• 1st in Fruit and Veg Judging at Taree 2022.

• 2nd in Fruit and Veg as well as Grain Judging in 2023 qualifying for the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

What has it felt like to receive recognition for the hard work you put into these events?

I've been overwhelmed with people's kind words and recognition for the work I do and it really is greatly appreciated, however that’s not why I do it. I love the fact that I get to encourage and mentor younger and older students to participate in Agriculture events and promote the Agriculture industry and just putting a smile on people’s faces is the best part about the job.

I’ve had a lot of mentoring and coaching from so many di erent people within the industry and I’m very thankful to every single one of them, whether they’ve played a big or li le part in my life.

Have you had any particular mentoring or coaching in this area or anyone that has particularly inspired you to excel?

it all started, my high school teachers and Yan Kleynhans and Gavin Saul from Cultivate Ag for all the guidance and mentoring they have given me.

Is this something you plan on continuing on with into the future? Where would you like this work to take you moving forward?

I live and breathe cattle and agriculture, so yes it’s definitely something I'll be continuing and striving for hopefully for a very long time. I’d love for this work to enable me to advance and expand our small family business, Kaminski Belmont Reds, in the future and help me run that to the best of my ability and work towards being able to work for people showing their cattle for them.

Do you have any particular plans or goals for when you finish school or your future career?

• Been a part of 2 reserve champion ICMJ overall teams.

Yes I’ve had a lot of mentoring and coaching from so many different people within the industry and I'm very thankful to every single one of them, whether they've played a big or little part in my life. In particular, back where

After school I hope to be accepted into the University of New England (UNE) to study a Bachelor of Ag or Rural Science and then add on a Masters of Education to become an Ag teacher. I would just love the chance to give back every opportunity that I was given when I was younger. I would also love to hopefully one day have the opportunity to travel over to Canada and America to network with people in the American Ag industry which will help me also advance when returning home in showing cattle and general farming.

Thanks Eden.

hat We Do... We love to curate wine, food and experiential tours that are fun, safe, entertaining and educational.

Our journey... I include my family as Co-founders of DVine Experiences. We have holidayed in this beautiful region for years and love all that it offers. My husband and I operated two businesses under the one roof through COVID and beyond. We felt burnt out and decided to make the sea change from Sydney in January 2023. With so many beautiful food, wine and natural environment options on offer in the Port Region we wanted to showcase them to those visiting, and so DVine Experiences was born.

Why this industry is my passion… All of the businesses I have owned, operated or been

involved in have all been customer centric. Having previously owned and operated fitness businesses, a podcasting studio and a media company it was time to tie it all together into something special. Consolidating a love of travel in general and the Port Region in particular, my business is people foremost and then I apply my expertise and passion around them.

Words of Wisdom... Build the business around people not product. Believe in the power of community. It helps everyone become better, reduces social isolation and enables intergenerational wisdom to trickle through the decisions we make today, for the benefit of tomorrow.

Outside of work... I love great coffee, an ocean cup at sunrise and trying to copy my daughter Tilly’s new gymnastics moves in the backyard. This teamed with a good podcast is perfection.

After moving to Port Macquarie with my family in 2014, I made the leap and opened Hawkes Conveyancing in September 2015. Owning my own business wasn’t necessarily something I had in the plan, but Port Macquarie has been really good to me, and I haven’t looked back. It’s been really rewarding.

Why your chosen industry is your passion...Conveyancing is a very fast paced, stressful job. I love the routine of it though and the excitement of helping people on their journey with property. There is nothing better than assisting clients with a major milestone in their lives. We work with clients in all different stages of life – first home, upsizing, downsizing and investing.

Outside of work...I am living the endless juggle of balancing work and life. I am a wife and mother of two children. When I’m not working you’ll find me hanging at the beach with the family, training at the gym or driving the kids around to their endless activities! hawkesconveyancing.com.au

CARLY MUNDAY

What you do...

I am the Co Founder/ Designer of fashion brand

Only Lovers Left along with my husband Brendan.

As a small business owner I wear a lot of hats. I oversee everything from production through to content creation and customer care.

Your journey...My career began as a hair stylist on the Gold Coast. So much of what I learnt during those years has shaped my identity, but mostly the beautiful people I have met along the way.

Only Lovers Left was born in 2015 as an expression of creativity and a way to connect with like-minded freespirited souls. Brendan and I began to experiment with hand-dying garments for ourselves and from there our passion for the art grew. Over the years we have developed a unique method of tie-dying, which has become the signature water coloured effect you see on our garments today.

Why your chosen industry is your passion... I want to show our children what it looks like to create the life you desire.

There is so much room for growth, I’m constantly learning in this industry. I love designing comfortable, wearable pieces bursting with colour to enhance that feeling of freedom found when exploring nature.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT

Your achievements... This year marks four years of supporting our family entirely through our art and we are just getting started! It’s literally my dream come to life and I pinch myself daily.

Together we built this business from scratch. What began as a hobby is now a multi 6 figure business. It’s wild.

It’s the biggest buzz when a new product drops and sells out in a day!  We’ve had our fair share of challenges. Small business can be tough to navigate, but I believe in what we do with my whole heart.

Words of wisdom... If you have a passion, don’t give up on it, follow your dreams and start with what you have. You can learn everything you need to along the way.

Outside of work you... I’m a Mum of two boys River and Sol. When I’m not working on my business I spend my time connecting with nature and exploring the natural beauty that surrounds us here in Port Macquarie with my little family.  onlyloversleft.com only_lovers_left

YAlana Roper

MUSE SKIN CLINIC

our Journey... My venture into the realm of Beauty Therapy commenced in 2003 upon completion of my Diploma. Unsure of my path, I transitioned from a retail traineeship at Target to a management role, overseeing various departments including cosmetics. Enthralled by the beauty industry, I pursued further education at Beauty School, where I excelled for the first time academically. Despite a modest high school performance, I lacked direction until I found my passion for beauty.

Over the years, I’ve enjoyed diverse roles in settings ranging from snow fields to urban spas, guided by esteemed professionals. My studies in Spa Management in 2007 opened doors, but by 2010 I felt drained from the Day Spa Industry’s demands and sought change by establishing a lash salon, an unconventional move at the time. As Lash Effects by Alana flourished, I expanded my services to include facials, building a vibrant

community around my business.

My passion for beauty therapy stems from my love for human connection and helping others. Beyond physical transformations, this profession is about forging meaningful bonds and providing emotional support.

In 2020, after the birth of my second child, I launched Alana Roper Beauty Therapy, marking a return to my roots in lashes. However, my ambitions quickly outgrew the small-scale operation, leading to the creation of Muse Skin Clinic in collaboration with my friend Hayley Dwyer. Muse embodies our combined 46 years of industry experience, focusing on empowering individuals to become their own source of inspiration. Why your chosen industry is your passion... My passion for beauty therapy stems from my love for human connection and helping others. Beyond physical transformations, this profession is about forging meaningful bonds and providing emotional support. The term ‘therapy’ in my job title extends beyond skincare; it’s about being a listener, a comforter, and a storyteller. Making a positive impact on someone’s confidence and well-being fulfils me deeply.

Ozzie (9) and Zara (4). Additionally, overcoming the ordeal of our son Ozzie’s battle with cancer in 2017 has been a profound personal triumph. Returning to work with the launch of Alana Roper Beauty Therapy amidst the challenges of motherhood and caregiving stands as a testament to resilience and determination.

Professionally, founding Muse Skin Clinic with Hayley represents a pinnacle achievement, fuelled by our shared vision and unwavering support from our families.

Words of Wisdom...In my many years of podcasting (IYKYK!) I’ve got a few sayings/mantras that I hold on to! Embrace your authenticity and live each day with purpose. Gratitude is found in the simple things, and beauty surrounds us in everyday moments. Cherish your loved ones and pursue your dreams boldly, even if they intimidate you. Remember to prioritise your health and push through moments of doubt, as true growth emerges from overcoming challenges.

My Achievements... My greatest accomplishments are my children,

Outside of work...I cherish spending time with my family… Ozzie loves cricket, golf and tennis. Zara loves to play at the park and ride her bike. My husband Nathan and I find solace in running, using it as a means to push our limits and support charitable causes. I witness the sunrise most mornings during my run and this is a cherished ritual that invigorates me for the day ahead.

Hayley Dwyer

MUSE SKIN CLINIC

What you do... I wear many hats, but first and foremost, I am a Mum to three beautiful children – Millie, James, and Daisy. I am also a cosmetic nurse, beauty therapist, cosmetic tattooist, and joint business owner of Port Macquaries newest urban medispa called Muse Skin Clinic. I perform various services such as micro-needling, brow tattooing, anti-wrinkle treatments, medical skin treatments such as IPL, peels, skin tightening, and more. However, what I mainly do is make people feel special and good about themselves.

Your journey...I began as a 17-yearold apprentice in beauty therapy, which led me to a prestigious celebrity salon in London. Subsequently, I owned a successful beauty salon in Port Macquarie where I employed my own team. I was part of many wedding days, offering freelance makeup artistry. I continued this until I travelled around Australia with my family for 12 months. Upon returning, a business opportunity allowed me to upskill and delve into the world of cosmetics and medical-grade treatments. It was during this time that I realised my passion for the craft of cosmetic injectables. Never one to shy away from challenges, I embarked on a university degree at Charles Sturt, becoming a registered nurse and

later a cosmetic injector. I'm now excited to share my expertise with the Muse Skin community that Alana and I are creating.

My job is about people; it’s about listening, understanding what my clients want and need, making people feel good, and empowering them.

Why your chosen industry is your passion...Beauty has been a passion of mine since I started going to the beauty salon with my Mum at a young age. I have photos of giving Dad facials at around the age of 7 (sorry, Dad). I couldn't imagine doing anything else for a living. My job is about people; it's about listening, understanding what my clients want and need, making people feel good, and empowering them. I am a creative at heart, and my job is my creative outlet. I've transformed brides on their wedding days for over 10 years, accentuating their beautiful features. This was my gift, and I'm excited to apply it to my injecting career. Delivering subtle enhancements, whether with cosmetic tattooing, injectables, or skin treatments that complement the beauty within, is so rewarding. It's 100% about empowering and nurturing my clients in their most vulnerable state. I cannot be any more passionate about my job if I tried.

Your achievements... My most important achievements are my children; I learn something new from them every day. I have created a life with my husband and children that I am very proud of, including traveling Australia in a caravan, recently building our dream home, and even

more recently, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. My next achievement will be watching Muse Skin Clinic grow while perfecting my profession and expanding my knowledge in all areas of the cosmetic industry.

Words of wisdom... For someone like me who loves a challenge, the phrase "do not be afraid to take the risk" comes to mind. If I can encourage my children or anyone to do anything, it would be to embrace opportunities, not be afraid to get out of their comfort zones, and pursue goals that may involve uncertainty or stepping into the unknown. You may not always succeed, but the setbacks will certainly teach you along the way. Facing your fears and saying yes to the risk opens up so many new opportunities and possibilities. Each risk taken becomes a stepping stone towards personal development, resilience, and learning so much more about yourself along the way.

Outside of work... I love being outdoors, whether it's a swim at the beach, fishing, a walk in the rainforest, or a day at our favourite little surfing spot, Plomer. I love creating memories with my family, having a wine or two with friends, dancing, and not taking life too seriously. When I get a chance, I love doing something creative. My goal one day is to set up an art studio so I can spend my time painting the day away. I have always enjoyed social sporting activities and played netball and touch football with friends, but I have recently discovered my love for the golf course. Lately, you'll find me playing a quick nine, realistically whilst having a conversation with Alana mostly about work - lol. museskinclinic.com.au

THE WITCHY NOOK

What you do... I own a small metaphysical shop. I offer a range of services including readings, meditation, reiki, workshops, crystal and sound healing along with the retail space filled with all your witchy and gifting needs.

Your journey... My journey started just over 2 years ago. My Nan had recently passed away and I wanted to put the money she left into something meaningful that I could carry on and make a difference with. The Witchy Nook was created to represent a space I wish I had access to when I first started diving into it all. A space accepting of all, inclusive of all paths and encouraging of people to find themselves and explore what the world has to offer. I started as a little online shop in October 2021 and branched out into local markets 6 months later. On the 1st of July 2023, The Witchy Nook in Colonial Arcade was born.

Why your chosen industry is your passion...I want to help others and I want to make a difference and help people believe in themselves. To me witchcraft is about being authentically you, there are no rules, no black and white, no standards you have to live up to. It is about surrounding yourself with

people who are there to support you instead of tear you down. This business and this industry is my passion because it is giving me the opportunity to help others. I am passionate about creating a safe space inclusive to all, a place people can go to unwind, let go of their stresses and just be amongst the good vibes. To me, having a shop and being open to all about my beliefs and practices, will hopefully help others gain the confidence to do the same. I want to create a community of like minded people who can support each other, grow together and follow their dreams. My passion is in helping others find their passions and to build people up to being their true authentic selves.

Your achievements... I probably have a lot of things I could list for this one but to me, the most important achievement in my business is a customer's positive feedback.

Your Journey... This journey started with a spark of passion for beauty, and now it’s become my life’s work. Every day, I get to wake up and do what I love, transforming faces and boosting confidence one brow at a time. It all began when I was just a young apprentice, eager to learn the art of cosmetic tattooing. I knew from the start that this was where I belonged, and I couldn’t wait to dive into the world of cosmetic tattooing headfirst. Fast forward a few years, and Brows by Willow was born. What makes Brows by Willow unique... It’s not just about the services we offer; it’s about the experience. From the moment you walk through our doors, you’re greeted with warmth and professionalism. We’re all about creating a welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable and confident.

Over the years, I’ve seen my business grow from a one-woman show to a bustling studio with a team of talented artists by my side. Together, we’ve expanded our

offerings, introduced new treatments, and elevated the standard of beauty in our community.

But it’s not just about the business side of things. For me, this industry is a passion project, a way to make a difference in people’s lives. Whether it’s giving someone their dream brows or helping them feel more confident in their own skin, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the impact we can have.

Outside of work... You’ll find me spending time with my loved ones, exploring new places, and giving back to my community. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the beauty treatments – it’s about the people behind them.

What you do… I’m a multi-award winning photographer who loves to capture the unique stages in the life of you and your family with a relaxed and fun experience in front of the camera.

Your journey… I have always been ‘the one’ with the camera in hand at every opportunity. I actually learnt the art of developing film in a dark room from my Dad who was a photographer too when I was small.

It wasn’t until I had my daughter almost 7 years ago that my husband bought me a DSLR so I could photograph the children and then my passion for photography just escalated.

For me, I enjoy how my own style is reflected in my photographs. Every photographer has their own slant on any situation and it’s amazing to see how my vision for a photograph or session shines through in the result, whether it’s for a local business or a client’s wedding. I adore how varied my work is!

Feedback I receive is that I make the process really easy and fun, which just makes it even more rewarding.

Your achievements… Winning the ‘Creative Services’ category in last year’s Business Port Macquarie Awards was a huge achievement for me, to be recognised on such a big stage was just incredible.

But most of all my biggest achievement is my wonderful repeat clients, and word of mouth bookings, because it tells me I’m getting things right.

Words of wisdom... We aren’t supposed to know everything about running a business, I know I certainly didn’t when I started. Ask for help, investing in a business coach was game changing for me.

This is a combo of my Full Wedding Package and MC/Coordination Package so, it’s basically a triple treat! Couples love it because they don’t have to worry about a thing. I’m right by their side the whole time from start to finish. I pride myself on taking the stress out of the planning process for them, ensuring that they enjoy every moment as I’m just as excited to be joining them for the ride.

For those couples that literally just want to get hitched without the fuss and are after something low key I offer a Legals Only Package where they choose 2 of their BFF’s, we head down to the headland, pop a bottle of champas and

I never had anticipated the number of enquiries and bookings I received and am so happy I made the decision to re-enter the industry as a celebrant & MC/ Coordinator. I have shared the most amazing experiences with over 100 couples, helping them create their dream wedding and making it an unforgettable FUN experience. Why your chosen industry is your passion... Having been in the industry for over 15 years it was just a total no brainer. It was the final piece of the puzzle as I was a wedding coordinator, planner, and MC for a multi award winning venue.

This is where I found my love for styling and flowers, (I mean who doesn’t love flowers.) From there I went on to become a qualified florist.

By far though, my favourite part of any wedding day was the ceremony.

I thought I could have some fun with this, by putting a modern spin on things and making it the highlight of

a couple’s wedding day. Becoming a celebrant was the next step and Marry Me Mindy was born. I have combined my skill set with also offering ceremony hire items which include a wedding arbour, dried flower arrangements, Welcome signage on easels, seating and an audio guest book.

DR JASON HEISE THE HEALTH CENTRE

I’m Dr Claudia Long, A GP AND AESTHETIC PHYSICIAN IN PORT MACQUARIE.

I’m a mother of two now grown-up kids, a Black Belt in Kumiai Ryu Karate and frequently dog-hair covered slave to two Border Collies.

Imoved to Port in 2012 from Canberra, where I had been working in the hospital system, in order to become a GP. I completed my GP Fellowship in 2014.

I’ve spent a lot of time in additional training in Lifestyle Medicine and Metabolic Health, Mental Health, Womens’ Health and Cosmetic Medicine. I summarise my eclectic set of medical interests as “helping people feel good about themselves and live their best lives”.

Most recently, I’ve joined the dedicated Womens’ Health team at The Circle (formerly Lachlan Medical Centre).

As well our usual GP services, I am focusing on a new area, which doesn’t get talked about much – vaginal health. This has been seen as such a taboo – I would have people of all ages come in looking really uncomfortable and having trouble even telling me what their symptoms are with vaginal conditions. I really want to be able to maintain the health of this fundamental part of each and every woman, as well as including and embracing all those people not identifying as female who have a vagina.

For example, in dealing with metabolic issues I would encourage regular exercise as part of the plan, and so many people would tell me they can’t exercise as much as they would like due to bladder leakage, and they’ve done all they can with physio and pelvic floor exercises and they’re left with the only option being surgery, but they’re afraid, or worried about taking time off work and busy family lives. So when I discovered the Empower RF machine, by InMode, I was really excited to find a treatment that was showing great results for these type of patients without going as far as surgery. And when I found out about all the other great treatments this machine can do for improving vulval and vaginal health, I just had to bring it to my patients in Port Macquarie. The Empower machine performs three treatments: V-Tone, FormaV and Morpheus V V-Tone stimulates the pelvic floor muscles, producing more and stronger contractions of the muscles than we’re able to do through

exercise, and targeted so you know the right muscles are being worked. It’s pelvic floor exercise on steroids.

FormaV uses radiofrequency energy to tighten soft tissues surrounding the muscles, for added support. The bonus is, this tightens the vaginal canal and even the labia – there’s an instant effect you can actually see.

Morpheus V uses a more targeted radiofrequency treatment to the vaginal mucosa (skin) which stimulates healing. This treatment is great for the dryness and pain many experience after menopause, and can also be used to help heal scar tissue from surgery, childbirth or skin conditions like lichen sclerosis.

The feedback I’m getting is along the lines of “yep, my bladder’s better which is great, but I’ve got to tell you about how much it’s improved my sex life!!”. Again, wanting to have sex and enjoy sex is not something women have typically talked about much, and especially not really to go to a doctor and say “I’m not enjoying sex like I used to”, which happens quite commonly after having babies and during the menopause.

The treatments can be combined in a personalised treatment plan, and treat many common pelvic and vaginal conditions, like urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary or vaginal infections, mild to moderate prolapse symptoms, scarring and other changes from childbirth and menopause. Side effects may include increased sexual pleasure!

The treatments are suitable for almost everyone with a vagina. Anyone interested in these treatments should book

an initial appointment with me, which is a 45 minute comprehensive assessment where we can discuss the right treatments for you. A course of treatments usually involves several treatments over a period of about 3 months – but one-off treatments can be done as well. Costs start around $500. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover this procedure, so the only rebate available is for the consultation.

To book, call The Circle on 5525 3888.

Flynns Beach Medical has had some exciting changes in the last few months. Can you tell us what has been happening?

For 30 years Flynns Beach Medical has been known for providing quality medical care to the people of Port Macquarie. Our town has grown and with it the need for more specialised services in women’s health, skin cancer and aesthetic medicine.

Amongst our fantastic team of dedicated doctors are a group who have a passion for, and a special interest in these areas. They bring together specialised skills, having undertaken significant further education and qualifications, with a desire to provide holistic, inclusive and collaborative care to our community.

With this in mind The Health Centre PMQ was born. We have completely transformed our Lachlan Close Practice to provide modern facilities and equipment, and an enhanced patient experience.

Please introduce us to your team at the Medical Centre.

Drs. Jan Snow, Jacinta Spry, Claudia Long and Chloe Blanshard are offering a range of services just for women and girls – everything from contraceptive advice, period problems, cervical screening, pregnancy planning and care, medical termination, sexual health, menopause, vaginal and continence concerns, breast health and more and they are supported by a qualified female nurse/midwife.

Dr. Jason Heise has completed extensive post graduate training in skin cancer medicine, detection and surgery, general dermatology and aesthetic medicine. His skin cancer services include skin checks and skin cancer management including excisions, complex flaps and skin grafts. He also provides rapid access dermatology appointments and holistic aesthetic medical assessments with a variety of options to keep you looking your best.

Dr. Heise is supported by specialist nurses with expertise and training in skin care, wound care and dermoscopy.

Whilst beginning as a predominantly medical service, our aim is to build a safe and

encompassing space that incorporates allied health, psychology, nutrition and more. If you are interested in being part of this please do let us know.

Flynns Beach Medical has centres in two locations, what are the benefits to the patient for having two centres available to them?

Operating from two locations has allowed us to streamline GP services at our Flynns Beach rooms and expand our capabilities to provide specialised services at The Health Centre. This transition ensures that each centre is staffed with appropriately qualified personnel, while still maintaining a unified patient database for seamless transitions between locations. Additionally, our dedicated nurses rotate between both sites, meaning that those long established patient relationships which are so central to care, continue.

Flynns Beach Medical have been serving Port Macquarie since 1994, which means you are celebrating 30 years this year, tell us what changes you have seen and

some of the biggest and most important changes over the last 30 years.

Certainly, the landscape of healthcare has evolved significantly in recent times, witnessing shifts in staff, doctors, equipment, and medical expertise. The COVID Pandemic, ushered in changes we couldn't have envisioned previously. However, one of the most profound changes is the evolution of Information Technology. From manual systems and paper-based patient files, we've transitioned to electronic patient records, digital archives, Telehealth and electronic services with script and pathology.

With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), practices are poised to explore the next frontier in healthcare management. You offer a complete range of treatments, procedures and services, can you give us a run-through of them all?

Tailoring healthcare to meet the unique needs of women is not only crucial but also reflective of a commitment to comprehensive wellness. Women often face distinct health challenges and outcomes compared to men, which necessitates a specialised approach in medical practice.

Dr. Jacinta Spry, a dedicated practitioner, draws inspiration from the resilience and wisdom displayed by mature women, who encounter additional hurdles in maintaining their health and vitality as they age.

At The Health Centre, our mission is to assemble a team of local women's health specialists dedicated to providing exemplary care for women. From general practitioners to allied health professionals, our team is committed to offering respectful, nonjudgmental, and collaborative care that caters to the specific needs of each patient.

We understand that addressing issues like sexual and reproductive health requires sensitivity and expertise, which is why we prioritise a tailored approach in assessment, education, and management.

At Flynns Beach Medical Centre, our comprehensive services provided by specialised GPs and nurses include consultations, scripts, basic testing, care planning, and referrals to imaging, pathology, allied health, and specialists. Our treatment rooms are fully equipped, offering services such as wound care, iron infusions, health assessments, and vaccinations including travel, Q-fever, Yellow fever, COVID, and childhood immunisations. Additionally, we provide Coordinated Veterans Care, annual health assessments for patients over 75, and pre-employment screening services, supporting our community's health and well-being.

Finding your place in fitness is more than just about the exercises; it’s about the people you surround yourself with. It’s the shared laughter, the mutual encouragement, and the collective energy that transforms routine workouts into cherished moments. This sense of belonging can be the catalyst that transforms ‘another day at the gym’ into ‘another day of moving forward together, or getting healthy with friends’.

In your search for the perfect fitness community, remember it’s all about finding that sweet spot where you feel challenged yet comfortable, pushed yet supported.

• Community Demographics: Look for a community that fits with you. Our gym, for instance, prides itself on being a hub for women from all walks of life, offering a judgement-free zone where you can be yourself, surrounded by those who get it.

• Make it fun: This is really very important. Anything you do needs to be fun.

• Consider location and environment: Do you prefer to train indoors or outdoors in the fresh air and watch the sunrise. Can you shower there before work, or is it on your direct route home from work?

Before you commit, take advantage of trial sessions. It’s the perfect way to test the

BONE LOSS

TOOTH LOSS

A RELATIONSHIP THAT DEFINES YOUR SMILE

Your smile and teeth are important, but what people fail to realize is that it’s the integrity of the bone that can define your smile.

Bone loss has recently become a topic of concern as patients begin to realise the importance of their bone and the bone density defines their smile. As the New Year begins, we thought it’s time to address the topic of Bone Loss, Tooth Loss, the relationship, prevention and treatment. Bone Loss occurs for a number of reasons, but the most common cause of bone loss is the result of a missing tooth or several teeth, which have not been replaced or substituted. Natural teeth that are embedded in the jawbone stimulate bone growth through chewing and biting. When missing teeth are left untreated, the bone no longer receives this stimulation, causing the bone to resorb. This bone loss or resorption can create a divot in your gum line, in your smile and a depression in your cheek. If you loose a number of teeth this can make your smile lopsided or depressed. In addition tooth loss can put pressure on your surrounding teeth and may cause these teeth to break down from the additional workload. In short, bone loss and tooth loss go handin-hand and we have outlined some of the important causes and solutions.

What causes bone loss?

Trauma and Tooth Extraction; Tooth loss by extraction or by trauma is the leading cause of bone loss. Natural teeth help stimulate bone growth through various activities, including biting and chewing. If a tooth is knocked out or is removed it can no longer provide the stimulation received from biting or chewing and bone loss will start to occur. Without a replacement tooth, bone graft or other dental solution, 25% of bone is lost within the first

year and will continue to deteriorate over time.

Gum Disease; Serious gum infections such as gum disease or periodontitis damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone structure that supports your teeth. If mild gum disease is left untreated it may progress into more serious gum diseases, including periodontitis, deteriorating the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place starts to deteriorate. The progressive loss of bone can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of neighbouring teeth and result in further tooth and bone loss.

Dentures; Loose dentures that are placed on top of the gum line may not necessarily provide any direct stimulation to the underlying jawbone and rely on the current bone structure to be held securely into place. Over time, this lack of stimulation may cause the bone to resorb and deteriorate, making it harder for users to eat and speak properly — this is where the term loose dentures come from. If left untreated, bone loss may become so severe that dentures can no longer be held in place, even with the use of stronger adhesives, and eventually may require a new set of dentures to be made.

Misalignment; Bone loss can occur from misalignment, when teeth are no longer providing direct stimulation as a result of not having an opposing tooth structure to hit against. Other misalignment issues, including TMJ, wisdom teeth erupting, lack of treatment and normal wear-and-tear can also result in the inability to perform natural activities such as chewing and biting. Overe time, bone loss can occur due to a lack of contact and direct stimulation.

Preventing Bone Loss

The first step is understanding the bone structure of your mouth and jaw and the importance of that bone to your smile and way of life. The second step is brushing and flossing daily, seeing your dentist/hygienist every six months and managing your periodontal or gum health. It is important to take tooth loss seriously and consider the impact on your whole smile and bone because with every tooth lost there is bone resorption and more pressure put on the remaining teeth.

Treating Bone Loss

Bone loss can be caused by any number of reasons, but whatever the cause you should consult your dentist to prevent any further bone and tooth loss. In severe cases of bone loss, bone grafting may be required to replace missing bone and support your teeth. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure to repair and rebuild damaged bone. This can be a solution to the ‘tooth loss divot’. In addition, a bone graft can save and support your natural bone structure and prevent further resorption. This treatment can open up the door for other dental treatments, including dental implants, dentures, bridges and other treatments to rehabilitate your smile should your smile start to fade due to bone resorption.

Hi Faye. You have just published your first book, a book of poems. Can you tell us about where the idea for this book came from and how long you’ve been working on it?

Well, I have been thinking for many years about having some of my writing published. I write short stories, children's stories and verse, as well

as poetry, which is my main focus. I have found that unless your name is known to a publisher, it is very difficult to get them to look at a submission. Eventually I decided the best option was to produce the book myself and then have it printed. I spent most of 2023 choosing 184 poems from my collection of about 600, arranging them suitably on the A4 pages, organising the contents list and slotting in the illustrations. The selected poems go back to

1982, though most are more recent. This book selection is all Faith Based.

Has writing and poetry always been something that you’ve enjoyed?

Oh yes! Very much so. An older sister and I shared a bedroom until I was about 12. After lights out at night we would sit up in bed taking turns to quote poetry, and making up short stories, even as a 5 year-old I loved poems.

I find that my inspiration comes from lots of different sources... a mood, a feeling in the air, a breeze, the wonder of the world around us, the flight of an eagle overheard, or just a quirky sense of fun. I can be hanging the clothes on the line, have a Brahminy Kite skim the air above, drop the washing, dash inside to write a poem, then back to the clothesline. Or it may come from meditating on something I had been reading in my quiet time.... or the sound of cicadas, deafening our ear-drums! Or spiderwebs, or the seashore, or clouds....such

an amazing world!

The poems in this book reflect my appreciation of the beauty and majesty, the incredible complexity, of all Creation; the mathematical precision of the way everything is designed, and our relationship with our awesome God.

You also illustrated the book, what was that process like?

I began by thinking I would do about a dozen pen drawings to illustrate the book, but somehow that grew to 75! I kept seeing another poem I thought would be enhanced by an illustration! I did use a couple of pen drawings I had done over the years, but mostly they were done especially for the book. In a few cases the poem was originally written as a result of having done a drawing. Can you tell us a bit about the artwork you created to accompany the poems?

improvising.

You’re obviously a very creative person. What impact do you think being able to express yourself through art, writing and music has had on your life?

Oh a huge impact! Being creative is who I am, and if I had not been able to do those creative things I think I would have felt buried!

I decided to keep to black pen for the illustrations, and many of them are actually lots of little dots. It is an interesting medium, as so many different effects can be achieved, from solid silhouette to dainty, light suggestion. You actually have a background as an artist, what sort of mediums and styles have you enjoyed working with over the years?

In my twenties I enjoyed doing pen drawings in sepia, or pencil, mostly of animals... cats, dogs, ocelots, horses, hares... Then about 1991 I decided to try watercolour, which I had always admired.

That is still my favourite medium, but I also worked in water-mixable oil, charcoal, pencil, aquarelle, pastel, mono-print and just a few small acrylic pieces.

Could you tell us about the art gallery you used to have? What did you enjoy most about having the gallery?

My gallery,“Creation's Voice Studio Gallery”,

What I loved most about it was sharing with visitors my love of painting and of the amazing wildlife in the world. Painting wildlife, from birds to cheetahs or wolves, was my favourite art subject.

Not only are you an artist, we hear you’re also quite the musician. What instrument/s do you play and what role has music played in your life?

I have been playing the violin and writing poems since I was eleven... I love my violin... COVID has prevented me having the at-home concerts I used to have each year... but I still play each week in my church music team. I also have a 'chin-cello' but do not play it very often. I have belonged to two amateur orchestras in the past, and was in a local String Quartet playing for weddings in this area for a few years not long ago.

It would be hard for me to not be able to play. I grew up classical, but these days am happy to enjoy playing many styles, and I especially enjoy

I am so grateful to have had those opportunities even though it has taken a long time to see the fruit of some of my writing over the years.

It is not always easy, this need to express yourself creatively. You sometimes feel like an 'odd man out'. I know lots of people do creative things, and that's wonderful, but finding someone who thinks like you do is never easy. There is a consolation in creative expression, even if no-one sees or hears it... but being able to share it is the ultimate joy.

Where can people find out more about your book and/or get their hands on a copy?

Because I published the book myself, at the moment the only way to purchase it is through me. The book is A4, 152 pages, 75 illustrations, beautifully printed on 150g Satin Paper by M&S Offset at Wauchope.

Cost is $30 (posted is $42.50).

Government-funded home care options: The Australian Government subsidises in-home aged care under two streams – the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP).

What is the Commonwealth Home Support Program? The Commonwealth Home Support

Programme (CHSP) is described as helping ‘older Australians access entry-level support services to live independently and safely at home’.

What is a Home Care Package or an HCP? Home Care Packages are for people who need more intensive support, or a comprehensive range of services, to remain safely at home.

The packages are flexible to meet emerging needs and are designed to respond to identified care requirements as well as your health and wellbeing goals.

There are four levels of Home Care Packages with provision across personal care, support services and nursing, allied health and clinical services.

& Pickleball has recently opened up their brand new, purpose built Pickleball courts. We spoke to coach Greg Alchin and the rest of the Wauchope Tennis Club Commi ee about the sport, how it’s played and what’s on o er at the club for those interested in giving it a go!

WAUCHOPE TENNIS CLUB

PICKLEBALL

Pickleball is a sport that not everyone is familiar with, can you tell us a bit about the sport and how it’s played?

Pickleball is a mix of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Pickleball is suitable for all ages and abilities, from children through to seniors. Pickleball is played with a ‘paddle’ and plastic wiffle ball. The game can be played as singles or doubles.

How has the sport grown in recent times? Do you get much demand for it at the club?

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the world and has taken off in Australia with many Aussies young and old now participating in the sport.

At WTC we have seen a big increase in membership and court bookings mainly due to Pickleball. Having the right courts, equipment and coaches on site has made playing pickleball easy.

Demand has increased since the courts were opened. We have introduced a number of come and try and social Pickleball sessions on weekdays, weeknights and weekends. We are fortunate to have a number of qualified Coaches at WTC. One coach, Aaron

Johnson is a professional pickleball coach and has recently joined the club. Aaron has lived on the Mid North Coast for the past 12 years and currently plays professionally in the National Pickleball League.

Wauchope Tennis Club has recently opened its purpose built Pickleball courts, how are these different to the tennis courts? How did the club come to the decision to put in these courts?

Our pickleball courts are a hard-court surface, which provides a more stable bounce than playing on a synthetic grass surface. They are a smaller area, approximately half the size of a tennis court.

a multi-purpose sporting hub that the community can use. With thanks to the NSW Government and wonderful sponsors and local trades, we have been able to make this a reality.

How has the response been from the club community to having these Pickleball courts available locally?

e response has been fantastic! Pickleball has a racted lots of new people to the Club interested in learning how to play pickleball.

Our pickleball courts can also be utilised as a multi-sport area for when hard surfaces are required.

We decided to apply for grant funding to optimise the under-utilised space near our existing courts. We were hopeful that adding these courts to our existing 7 tennis courts would secure the club’s future and provide

The response has been fantastic! Pickleball has attracted lots of new people to the club interested in learning how to play pickleball.

The Open days, competitions, junior camps and social sessions are bringing the community together and rejuvenating the club.

Not only are we seeing steadfast tennis players giving it a go, but also people from other clubs, even travellers opting to play on our new courts.

On top of that our Junior Hot Shots has started, school term sports programs and we have opportunities for OOSH services to come to the club. We want to offer more for our

Yes!Our pickleball community is growing at a fast pace. We have regular players and we are continually getting enquiries and new players coming along.

We have held a number of events in the past 6 months. Our Official Opening saw over 200 people come along and join in on the ‘Pickle’ themed fun and try the game. This then followed with a Tennis Australia ‘Rally as One’ community day where we held Junior Tennis Coaching and had our first friendly Pickleball Tournament. This day in particular really showed us the interest of Pickleball locally and highlighted the talent we have in the area. The games were really something!

As part of the Wauchope Lasiandra Festival that is coming up in March, we will be having another tournament called the ‘Wauchope Tennis Club Purple Pickleball Competition’.

This will be open to all players and another opportunity to support the club while having fun. It will be divided into skill levels from beginner to advanced.

Pickleball is easy to start o as a sport, with longer rallies being played from the get go. Pickleball also allows all players to participate at a similar level on an equal playing field.

Throughout the year, our coach Aaron will be developing players to travel to tournaments and represent the Club. This is along with regular private coaching, group coaching and organised coach led social groups, competitions, and tournaments.

Can anyone play? How physically demanding is Pickleball?

I would say once you get the hang of scoring the rest is easy!

Because of the equipment and court dimensions it is easier to pick up for beginners and school age children and great for those less agile.

Pickleball is easy to start off as a sport, with longer rallies being played from the get go. Pickleball also allows all players to participate at a similar level on an equal playing field.

Beginners usually start out playing doubles and this gives a lower intensity workout. As you develop skills, singles can offer a higher intensity workout.

What’s your favourite thing about the sport?

Having fun! Pickleball provides the opportunity for social interaction with others, meeting like minded people, forming new friendships, all while remaining active. How can people find out more or get in touch?

Via social media which is updated weekly:

• Follow our ‘Wauchope Tennis Club and Pickleball’ Facebook Page

• Join our ‘Wauchope Pickleball’ Facebook group

Via website www.playtennis.com.au/ wauchopetennisclub, where you can also book a court, enquire about membership and fee structure of the club.

Regular players are encouraged to consider joining our club and becoming a member so they can stay informed of upcoming sessions and events.

Some of our member benefits include special members rates to book a court, access to competitions, organised social play, and member discounted social events.

Thanks Greg.

FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT

This Women in Business Issue has me reminiscing about some of the strong and inspiring women that I have helped both locally and all over Australia. In celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday the 8th of March, I thought I would do something a little different and share with you, some case studies of a few inspirational women that I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 12 months.

Last year I assisted a single mother purchase her first home solo. This amazing woman had come from a DV relationship where her finances were also controlled. Because of this, my client had no idea about budgeting and the process of buying property. Her previous mortgage fell in arrears due to the relationship breakdown which negatively impacted my client’s credit file. Through education and careful consideration of the right lender for this scenario I was able to assist my client to get back into the property market and provide a home for her children independently.

rough education and careful consideration of the right lender for this scenario I was able to assist my client to get back into the property market and provide a home for her children independently.

I was lucky enough to assist the next amazing woman twice in 2023. As a single mother and small business owner this woman was very time poor. When we first met, she had one property and the thought of reviewing her lending seemed overwhelming, which meant she was on a much higher interest rate then she needed to be. After reviewing her lending, we refinanced and saved her approximately $3,500 per year. On top of this, she received an additional $4,000 cash back to refinance. Throughout her Discovery Appointment we uncovered that she had a strong equity position and she had mentioned that she had always wanted to get an investment property but didn’t think she was in a position to do so. We put a plan in place, and fast forward 3 months down the track and I assisted her once again by structuring finance for her first investment property.

I recently assisted a self-employed client to upsize and purchase a new owner-occupied property. Her existing property then became another investment, which she added to her

growing portfolio of now 5 properties. This was the first time that I had assisted this client with her lending needs. Throughout the process of understanding her financial situation and business structure I quickly identified that there was a need for tax planning assistance to potentially better manage her income. I referred my client through to a local accountant who can now assist her in ensuring better tax management and planning. This was a huge win for the client and she was extremely grateful. What I love about my career is that I get to meet strong women every day that have come from all different walks of life. These women have all gone through adversities to get to where they are and I get inspiration daily from these women, listening to their journey. I feel blessed that they then put their trust in me to assist them in the next step of that journey and one step closer to building a stronger financial future.

As a mum, wife and business owner I understand the pressures of juggling work life balance and that sometimes our finances get put on the back burner due to competing priorities. Because of this, I have structured my business in a way that fits in with my clients’ schedules. I can work appointment times around you, so don’t let being time poor be an excuse. Let 2024 be the year you become financially empowered and book your Discovery Appointment today.

CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS

Jess

Tout-Lyon

Jess Tout-Lyon is an Early Career Researcher and Lecturer in Ecology at Charles Sturt University. She is passionate about using her skills in eDNA to help communities understand climate change and explore the impact extreme weather events can have on the ecology of aquatic systems from the Manning River to the Great Barrier Reef. She shares this passion with the next generation of environmental scientists on the Port Macquarie campus.

What is eDNA and what started your journey and passion in this field?

eDNA is short for environmental DNA and it refers to the traces of DNA particles we leave behind in the environment. DNA can be found in the hair or skin cells we shed, the particles we may sneeze or even breath out and, in our poo, which is what environmental scientists get really excited about! Depending on where these remnants are left and how the surrounding environment interacts with them, DNA can persist for days, weeks or even millennia. It can be used to study a huge diversity of living (and once-living) organisms like animals, us (think forensics) and even viruses (think SARS-CoV-2) by targeting RNA instead. The field of eDNA really evolved from the work microbial ecologists were doing in the 1980s and this is how I was introduced to the method, by studying the micro-organisms living in animals on coral reefs. Just as many people are now aware of the human-microbiome, and how important it is to our own health, microbes play a fundamental role to the health and functioning of the environment, and therefore impact our everyday lives because we live in an inter-connected world regardless of how far from “nature” someone may think they live. You explore and examine everything aquatic - oceans, rivers, lakes and streams

and have been a part of projects from the Great Barrier Reef to the Manning River. What are some of the exciting projects that you have worked on in your career?

I have been fortunate to work in some of the most beautiful places on earth, including right here in our own backyard on the Mid North Coast of NSW. My research investigating the impact of marine heatwaves on coral reefs led me to work on various islands in the Great Barrier Reef that are for research purposes only, took me to the Red Sea in Israel and to share my research in places such as Aotearoa, Italy, South Korea, and Singapore. Closer to home, the Manning River Helmeted Turtle is only found south of here, in various tributaries of the Manning River and I have had a fantastic time working with such passionate people from local council, state government, local community groups, local land holders, other researchers to help ensure this beautiful little freshwater turtle can remain healthy and viable in the wild.

What opportunities are available to study Environmental Science at Charles Sturt?

How can students get ‘hands on’ in the field?

We have a really applied first year experience for our Environmental Science and Management students here at Charles Sturt in Port Macquarie on Birpai Country. One of their first subjects (often scheduled on their first day) is a practicalbased subject, where we expose students to a variety of lab-based and field-based ecological

activities that will form the foundation of their professional practise as environmental scientists at Charles Sturt. We are also fortunate to have a diverse team of lecturers with various expertise across terrestrial and aquatic ecology as well as people who specialise in native Australian flora and fauna. Students can gain further experience in the field through the student-led enviro-Club which is dedicated to running environmentallyfocused events and activities, by working alongside locally-based environmental stakeholders in local and state government as well as various industry sectors and by assisting researchers to conduct their research which can evolve into further study as post-graduate students.

How can students hope to make an impact in the field of environmental science into the future?

The next generation of environmental scientists are already making their mark at university as they are environmentally and ecologically literate and aware by the time they finish high school. I think moving forward, new students can approach environmental science from a broader perspective to include diverse ways of knowing and diverse knowledges. Then we will really have a deeper understanding of what is going on and a better approach to addressing issues that face the environment and us. study.csu.edu.au/courses/bachelorenvironmental-science-management

REGIONAL AUSTRALIA BANK

HRogan Hunter

Rogan Hunter speaks with us about Regional Australia Bank and The Community Partnership Program

ello Rogan, please tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Regional Australia Bank.

Having lived in Port Macquarie for 21 years, my wife and I have had the pleasure of raising 4 children in this region of abundant natural beauty. Our family, I am proud to say has been, and remains very active within the area through a variety of different sporting codes, community groups and our collective vocations. My role at Regional Australia Bank is that of Business Development Manager (BDM) encompassing the coastal region from Tea Gardens in the South through to Woolgoolga in the North. The main purpose of my position is to promote the growth and expansion of Regional Australia Bank through active involvement with Employer Groups, Small to Medium Enterprises (SME’s), Professionals and Community Groups.

How did the Community Partnership Program come about?

Now in its 15th year, the Regional Australia Bank Community Partnership Program has grown with us. It started out as an idea to demonstrate the good that money can do within our local communities. As we’ve grown, so has the Community Partnership Program. In 2018 we gave away just over 1 million dollars. This year, we gave away almost 2.75 million dollars to community groups in regional NSW.

How does it work?

The amount we donate to each group is calculated by crediting an additional 1% ‘interest’ on the average monthly balance of our nominating member account balances.

The Regional Australia Bank Community Partnership Program provides financial assistance to community groups across regional Australia allowing them to focus on what they do best rather than fundraising. Our members choose the local community organisation they

wish to support from our list of 1,900 registered groups and causes. The amount we donate to each group is calculated by crediting an additional 1% ‘interest’ on the average monthly balance of our nominating member account balances.

How can community groups join the Community Partnership Program?

Community groups interested in becoming a recipient organisation should contact Regional Australia Bank, either in person at one of our branches or by calling our Service Support Centre on 132 067.

The friendly staff at your local branch or our Service Support Centre will be able to help you through the process and ensure that everything is completed correctly. On the Mid North Coast

104 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

as the Business Development Manager, I am happy to work closely with any groups wanting to find out more or sign up.

Tell us what excites you the most about supporting local community groups?

Community groups are the heart and soul of regional Australia and embody what we hope to represent at Regional Australia Bank. We see the meaningful impact these community groups have on empowering regional Australians and that’s the motto we live by and strive to achieve.

On a more personal note, my family and I have had the good fortune to live, educate, work and play in an environment that is rich in community support.

Having been involved with local community run organisations as a coach, board member and even simply as a parent, I know the true importance of what the program represents and how it assists.

The opportunity to reciprocate back to the people and organisations that provide so very much to the well being of our community members is indeed a privilege.

Can you tell us some of the groups you have supported with this program and what you were able to help them with?

The Community Partnership Program reaches over 1900 community groups in regional NSW. These range from sporting groups, healthcare

support groups, arts groups, preschools, animal shelters and more. In Port Macquarie and Wauchope alone last year the program supported 88 groups including the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie, Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club Inc, Port Macquarie Women’s Shed, Hastings Valley Vikings Rugby Union Club Incorporated, Wauchope Rural Fire Brigade, Wauchope Public School P & C, Wauchope Show Society Ltd, King Creek Rural Fire Brigade and Beechwood Tennis Club Inc.

A number of groups have indicated how

influential this additional funding has been in helping them with various operating costs, allowing them to focus on their individual organisational goals.

Why do you think it is important to have programs like this in place?

Having been involved with local community run organisations as a coach, board member and even simply as a parent, I know the true importance of what the program represents and how it assists. These organisations are largely volunteer based and in regional Australia, ensuring their sustainability can be a massive workload. Programs like this do more than just provide direct funding to the participants, it provides a medium to promote what they represent. Every dollar we reinvest into any one of these organisations can be monumental in increasing their capacity to focus on what’s most important, rather than fundraising.

Tell us a bit about your role in the community.

The beauty of the role is that I am employed by a bank that is customer-owned and proudly regional. I love that our success is directly related to the strength of the community around us and therefore the more we engage and support our local people, the greater our presence becomes and the opportunity to support further into the region perpetually grows.

Thank you.

Illuminate

Ross Cargill

Ross Cargill is a modern day regional leader renowned for his affability and unshakable community spirit. He de ly leads two successful businesses with a healthy mix of head, heart, honesty and humour that belies a laser focused business acumen. He recently changed the name of his leading enterprise “Men At Work” to “Men And Women At Work” receiving unexpected accolades from across the country for this simple yet inclusive approach.

How did a country boy with a passion for business and agriculture track a journey through the city to coastal Port Macquarie to lead an award winning traffic management, labour hire and training company - Men And Women At Work and Learning Live? Where did it all begin?

Thanks Kate, I was born and raised on my family’s property near the small country town of Braidwood on the Southern Tablelands of NSW. After finishing school, I attended UWS Hawkesbury (previously Hawkesbury Ag College) and that lead to my first job as a Market Analyst for the National Livestock Reporting Service. In my mid 20s, I headed to the UK for 12 months and on my return found myself in Port Macquarie for 12 months. It’s now 19 years later and I haven’t left. Life takes us down an interesting path and the last 5 or 6 years have seen many changes in business and family life. My partner Liesa and I have 5 kids between us, ranging from 15 to 21 years old, so life is full on and fantastic. Men and Women at Work (MAWAW) and Learning

Live have evolved and I am a very fortunate custodian of two great businesses.

Despite an impressive list of career and tertiary achievements, community and industry networks - you often refer to yourself as the accidental businessman. Is your success at the helm of MAWAW and Learning Live by accident or by design?

I’m big in my own lunchbox Kate! In all seriousness though, I think it’s a bit of both.

I have taken opportunities when they arose and when I needed more knowledge, I have sought it. I recently completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course and I have just enrolled in a Master of Education through Griffith Uni. I love “the game” and the challenges it provides. Being competitive in business is addictive. I don’t sit idle for too long and never take myself too seriously.

The change of your business name from “Men At Work” to “Men And Women At Work” was a game changer in so many ways – you caught the attention and the admiration of the business and broader community. What has been the most surprising result of the name change?

When we changed our name, it redefined us. I honestly didn’t think it would. The support from industry and the broader community has been resounding. I am so proud we made the change and took our time to do it well. A LinkedIn comment from a total stranger concluded with;

“It takes courage to realise you want to change something that has been a certain way for so long, and then even more to take action. Brave for leaders and companies to rethink, refocus, shift course, and rebrand.”

We (Men And Women At Work) are more than the sum of all our parts; an inclusive, genuine, hard-working, community minded, family business that makes great things happen.

What has been the most challenging experience for you coming from within the team of a family owned business to leading and owning it?

Dealing with emotions in any family-owned business is challenging. Working for and or with people who care and are dedicated to the business can be a source of brilliance and

106 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

conflict. However, it is the very reason familyowned businesses are successful. Your secret weapon in leadership appears to be a healthy mix of heart, humour and hard work - which of these is the most important and why?

That’s a tough one but you’ve got to have heart. In the green mill at Coffs Harbour Hardwoods (where I literally cut my teeth in labour hire nearly 20 years ago), there is a sign on the wall and it says “Timber should always be stacked with the heart side down.” It has stuck with me, or maybe just resonated with the way I was brought up. If you put your heart into it (work, sport, family, whatever ‘it’ is) you’ll work hard, people will respect you, trust you and follow you. It’s then up to you to listen to them so you can get somewhere together. But have fun while you’re doing it, life’s too short not to enjoy what you’re doing. Do you subscribe to a firm business plan or adapt to a more fluid style with energy and flow?

Our plans are fluid, though in recent years we have adopted a balanced scorecard to achieve and measure success. A good plan will guide you, but also allow you the freedom to take opportunities when they come.

You have curated a team of highly skilled teams to deliver on the MAWAW mission, how important is this team to the success of the business/s?

Our people are everything. In recent years we’ve had a strong focus on emotional

intelligence and ensuring our team work on these attributes. This being said, we have many people of all backgrounds working both on the road and in our offices. Our vision is our values; That everyone is Safe - HappyValued - Recognised - Respected.

It is important to me that we do everything we can to make sure all our teams represent each of these values.

What has been your most effective tool/s or attribute/s as a business owner that has enabled you to steer MAWAW into a new era and make a difference?

The volatility of recent years has taught me many things, but more than ever we need to expect the unexpected and be ready to respond. We respond well to change, but at times we have also responded to change, with change. That can take a lot of guts but the rewards have been there.

What has been your greatest achievement during your time as a business owner?

Our name change is hard to top to be honest. How instrumental have sages and critics been in the evolution of your career/ business? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you?

I’m not sure I’ve listened to critics but am readily critiqued. More often that not I am my own most aggressive critic. I’ve been fortunate to have some great colleagues from a Mastermind group that Jane (Hillsdon) and Macca (Anthony Wilson) put together back in 2018. Those two, Flowery (Alistair), Susan

Judd, Stacey Morgan, Anthony DeJager, Craig Watson and I have supported each other through all the challenges of recent years and now share great friendships beyond business which is amazing. However, it is the ability of these people, our senior leadership team and other close friends and family to call me out that I really cherish.

You are in boots and all for our community participating in initiatives such as Hastings Dance for Cancer and Cantoo. How important is it you and MAWAW contribute to the connection and culture of our community?

It is something we have spent a lot of time on recently and I know working with the likes of Kelly Lamb from Liberty Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services has really allowed us to knuckle what “it” is down.

Our partnerships must have a shared purpose. It is really important that the organisations, teams and charities we support share our values, particularly around community and the betterment of all people. Other local organisations we support include the Hastings Education Fund and of course Make A Difference Foundation.

What advice do you give those emerging entrepreneurs who don’t see themselves as leader but want to get out there and give business a crack?

Back yourself.

Lawyers came in at 14th on the list behind police, accountants, and public servants, but ahead of bank managers, financial planners, journalists, federal and state MP’s, real estate agents, and car salesmen.

In 2022, the NSW Law Society commissioned a survey of more than 1000 people to gauge their opinions on the trustworthiness of the legal profession. Judges fared best with a score of 62 per cent, followed by lawyers generically (60 per cent) and the legal system generally (59 per cent). The data also showed that 40% of respondents were either distrustful or neutral in their attitudes.

The results of the survey are sobering. Lawyers and judges, for the large part, dedicate their lives to ensuring that the rule of law, (and

through it – justice), prevails and that they act in their client’s best interests.

So, what causes this disjoint between dedication and trust? There are “bad eggs” in any profession, however, this is not the sole reason for the disjoint. Our legal system is based on the common law or adversarial system. In this system, parties are essentially “adversaries”. The court then makes a decision on the issues that the parties advise the court that are in dispute. One party wins and is happy with their legal team, the other party loses and often distrusts their own team but they distrust the other team even more.  Nurses, doctors and other professionals are not required to subject their clients to the bearpit of the court room. They can just dedicate themselves to ensuring their charges get the best available resolution for their issues.

You need to be able to trust your lawyer both to act in your best interests and to maintain legal professional privilege, (not disclose information without your consent).   Lawyers know how important a client’s trust is because it helps us to do our job better.  We need clients to feel relaxed enough to tell us everything in relation to a particular matter so that we can ensure that we give them the best advice and that, when we are in the bearpit of

the court room, there are no surprises.   Lawyers cant send their clients off for tests to find out what the problem is. We rely entirely on our client’s information and the evidence that they have to support that information.

Trust is critical to the lawyer-client relationship.

Besides a lawyer’s obligation to their client, a lawyer also has the following obligations : To:-

• not mislead the court;

• act with competence, honesty and courtesy towards other solicitors, parties and witnesses;

• be independent (free from personal bias);

• be frank in their responses and disclosures to the Court; and

• be diligent in their observance of undertakings.

• Moral of the story? Find the best lawyer for you and trust them to do their best for you.

Our team of lawyers, conveyancers and staff at Priest Legal are dedicated to working collaboratively with our clients to achieve positive outcomes wherever possible.

SOVEREIGN HILLS

MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITY

ANDREW & TONI FARRELL

When searching for a place to call home on the Mid North Coast, Andrew and Toni Farrell’s wish list included a central location for their children and grandchildren. They were delighted to find this and so much more at Sovereign Hills.

Wbuild your beautiful

new home in The Heritage precinct at Sovereign Hills?

We had been researching available land on the Mid North Coast after falling in love with the area after a visit to our beautiful friend and her family in Lake Cathie. We saw the development and loved the way it was set out with walking trails, areas for families to play and surrounded by a band of trees. The images showed an amazing and vibrant community with a lovely shopping centre and plans for the future.

We had the opportunity to view the area briefly and loved the ambience of the place. Sitting in the open-air seating under the palms at Sovereign Place Town Centre, having a coffee and watching the happy people going by; we knew this was going to be our forever home. This was emphasised further when we returned to start looking for a builder and we called into the gift store and the amazing assistant remembered us by name. How did you find the building journey

with G.J. Gardner Homes?

When we were doing our research and looking for our builder we checked through all the homes on display. While many of the designs were beautiful, we wanted a very Coastal Hamptons style with quality finishes. We also wanted to work with a builder we could make a connection with and who would listen to our needs. We had a vision for our forever home as this was our fourth build together. We had the great fortune of meeting a delightful lady at the show home and she listened to the vision we were trying to describe. We later returned for another walk through and found the owner (Drewe Timewell) working in the display

We have already made a number of great friends simply by saying ‘hi’ and giving a smile as they pass by.  We think it’s the range of people here that make our community what it is.

home that day with his youngest son in the office. He was easy to connect with and listened to our ideas. It was great to work with such a proud, family man.

We wanted to include a pool in our project and Drewe from G.J. Gardner made the process easy. Drewe was also very accommodating as we wished to supply our own appliances and fittings. He was great to communicate with to make sure they were all made available on time for a seamless installation.

How would you describe your home style?

We had a vision of a very low maintenance Coastal Hamptons style and although it may

110 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

true to our goal. We wanted a home that we would want to come home to and not have to spend all our downtime maintaining. We opted for some additional extras during construction but knew the end result would fit our dream. It is such a beautiful feeling to walk in through the door and to feel the wave of tranquility wash over you and know that yes, I am home.

Do you both have a favourite room in your home?

Our favourite room would have to be its heart - the kitchen. This is where we made some bold choices in our colour selection and supplied our own tapware, fittings and appliances, but it all came together beautifully. From the blue herringbone splashbacks to the stone bench tops and antique style tapware and fittings; it all looks amazing.

So many of the homes finishing touches were the result of your handiwork, even the landscaping. That must feel really rewarding…

Toni is the one who really deserves the credit. She is a powerhouse who does not stop. While we were in our rental waiting for the land to be released and then for the build to finish, Toni was hard at work selecting the plants she wanted for our future home and repurposing our furniture to match her vision. All the finishing touches have been carefully selected from local shops, op shops or brought with us after being carefully restored to match the new decor. Toni had to make our own sheer curtains and Roman blinds from scratch, we spent time together carefully making the board and batten panelling for the entry hall and bedroom retreat.

We wanted a home where we can relax after a hard day, to jump in the pool when we feel like it, to eat out on the alfresco or simply watch the world go by sipping a coffee on the front porch.

here that you realise Sovereign Hills is well on the way to achieving just that. Sitting down in one of the many quality eateries, having a coffee and watching the smiles on the faces as the people go by makes you want to call this place home. We love the friendly nature of the people we have met and we would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

What do you enjoy most about living at Sovereign Hills?

We love being able to go for an evening walk or just sit on our porch and chat with the lovely locals. We have already made a number of great friends simply by saying ‘hi’ and giving a smile as they pass by. We think it’s the range of people here that make our community what it is.

Everything works seamlessly with the cooking spices and trays located right next to the oven, the under-bench bins located right under the chopping board. We had a plan in mind and the finish was delivered to our expectation. Our other favourite space is our bedroom retreat, where we can sit back, relax and watch the water ripple on the pool.

Our new favourite saying is that we are both "happier than happy" with the results.

Can you shed more light on why you chose to build your home at Sovereign Hills?

Although we did love the brochures which promised a master planned development, it is not until you actually spend some time

Now is a good time to start thinking about the warmth in our homes and how we can maintain that better throughout winter.

Installing blinds, curtains or awnings can keep the warmth in and drastically reduce energy costs and then, of course, come summer will do the same to keep out the heat and therefore keep you more comfortable for years to come without the ever increasing power bills. What would be the best options to maintain the desired temperature inside your home?

Stopping the cold or heat before it reaches your windows is by far the best solution and this can be achieved in a number of ways. Roller shutters and fabric awnings including ziptraks or zipscreens are the most popular, while inside you can use all sorts of window coverings. Heavy curtains of course are ideal for protection from the elements as are cellular blinds, blockout roller blinds or romans and of course shutters all enhance the look of your home while reducing energy consumption.

The trend this year is leaning towards colour and individuality. The range of fabrics we have on offer for curtains, roller blinds and roman blinds in particular, is really exciting and allows your home to be different from the next. HOW TO FIND YOUR OWN INTERIOR DECORATING STYLE…

Sometimes our customers tell us they get overwhelmed when it comes to decorating - they know what they like and don’t like, but perhaps they feel less confident when it comes to pulling an entire, cohesive look together. When it comes to finding your own particular interior decorating style, it’s essential to understand a bit more about what decorating style is, and how it represents your home and the way you like to live. Ideally, your style should be a reflection of your personality, your family and your lifestyle preferences.

Developing your own personal decorating style therefore, simply means curating furniture and homewares that are a creative expression of what’s important to you and those you love. While trends can influence style, they certainly don’t have to define it.

There are plenty of dark, moody neutrals that will add drama to your scheme but still work sympathetically with many other colours.

It’s about creating a comfortable space that feels uniquely yours. Good style often goes beyond fashion trends to more fully encompass your values, culture, and even your community.

A good place to start discovering your own style is by exploring different interior design styles to see which ones resonate most with you.

At Open House Furniture, we often recommend beginning with using neutrals as your colour palette. Neutrals are extremely versatile and provide a great foundation for you to then embellish your space further.

Neutrals don’t have to be just a variation on beige either; there are plenty of dark,

moody neutrals that will add drama to your scheme but still work sympathetically with many other colours.

With a neutral backdrop, you can then add personality and colour with soft furnishings, decor accents, artwork or even punches of black. A good tip is to consider keeping your scheme contained within three main colours.

Create more depth using various shades of the same hue and incorporate layers and varied textures to make the scheme even more interesting and dynamic.

Eastland Truss & Timber have been supplying frames, trusses and engineered flooring systems on the Mid North Coast since 1988.

Meet NATHAN KAMINSKI

Hand Timber, can you give us a little background on the company and how long it’s been in our local community for? Eastland Truss & Timber was formed in September 1998 by a group of local builders and developers through the necessity for Pre-Fabricated Frames and Trusses in the Greater Port Macquarie area and beyond. Eastland Truss & Timber was the first to do so, employing local people in roles from administration, technical support to trade staff including carpenters. Tell us a bit about yourself and your experience in the industry. I joined the Timber Industry in 1996 with Hudson Timber & Hardware in Sydney. With a passion for service and supply I moved on to Wholesale Timber Supply in the newly formed market of EWP (Engineered Wood Products – LVL & I-Joist), spending 15 years providing a range of solutions to builders, developers and merchants. This knowledge then led me into the Frame & Truss Industry in 2015 as a Sales & Business Manager across x2 fabrication plants, Western Sydney and here on the Mid North Coast. The desire for the move was to have a direct line to the end user to be able to integrate myself as a cog within their business.

What sets Eastland apart from others in the industry? Eastland Truss & Timber have an impressive level of experienced staff, combining knowledge of past, present and future trends and requirements, combined. Eastland Truss &

Timber staff boasts over 120 years of experience. Through personal service, local knowledge and relationships we are able to offer sound advice and solutions for every level of building in conjunction with continual communication and on time delivery. It would be hard to go past Eastland Truss & Timber for any building project.

How do you ensure the quality and durability of your products? There are a number of factors coming into play around quality and durability, quotation, design, material selection, fabrication and delivery to site. It starts with focusing on the client’s design and ensuring the in house detailing for frames, floors and trusses works from start to finish on site, not only on paper. Material selection is commonly over looked but plays a major role. All our material supply is scrutinised and evaluated regularly to conform to the highest of industry standards. Finally our fabrication lines have recently developed a quality control program to stringently audit, inspect, test and evaluate finished products.

What measures do you take to ensure customer satisfaction? As I mentioned above, personal service is key. Clients are free to come in and sit down with the staff member that will be designing their project. This gives the client the opportunity to converse on ideas and make last minute changes if they desire. During this process we can also discuss the time frames required for final designs and delivery, leaving the client comfortable that we can meet their needs without worry.

Are there any factors that may affect

pricing, such as customisation or volume discounts? Nearly all builds are unique, however there are projects from time to time that will have repeat floor plans but different facades, and that can sometimes assist with offering an even more competitive price than already offered. At Eastland Truss & Timber we pride ourselves on offering an honest, high quality competitive package based on build complexity, and is something we are willing to discuss based on the project.

How do you ensure compliance with building codes and regulations? Our technical team use state of the art Miitek engineering software to ensure jobs are designed and supplied with all relevant building codes and regulations. Over and above this, we conduct regular internal training sessions and are in constant communication with building certifiers and engineers to ensure we remain current with building regulations.

Can you give our readers an overview of all the services and products that Eastland offer their customers? At Eastland Truss & Timber we offer a one stop shop for products and services relating to residential and commercial construction solutions. We specialise in timber frames & trusses, light steel frames & trusses and structural steel to provide the complete package for all stages of projects from small extensions to multi-level commercial developments.

Thanks Nathan.
