Kristen Lonie, the creative mind behind KL Swimwear, takes us on the journey of her venture into the swimwear industry and her commitment to quality, sustainability, and community. Kristen shares insights into her unique approach to swimwear design, the challenges of starting a business without a fashion background, and the benefits of keeping production local.

KL SWIMWEAR

Hi Kristen. Can you share a bit about how KL Swimwear came to be?

Initially, I had no experience in the design and manufacturing of swimwear. I honestly didn’t know how to sew!

The venture into this industry was not a premeditated business endeavour; rather, it stemmed from a desire to create stage wear for myself, given the limited options available in Australia at the time. I possess a handson approach and a mindset that embraces challenges, believing that if others can do it, so can I. This philosophy has been a driving force throughout my entire life.

My foray into swimwear began with the creation of custom stage wear for my fitness competitions. Fueled by a passion for fashion and fitness, I embarked on this path, drawing from my personal experiences and preferences to craft unique pieces tailored to the specific needs of the fitness industry.

Over time, as I refined my skills and gained deeper insights into the intricacies of swimwear design, I made the strategic decision to shift focus from custom stage wear to exclusively producing beach bikinis.

Each KL Swimwear piece is meticulously cra ed to harmonise style, comfort, and functionality, catering not only to the discerning tastes of the fitness community but also to a broader audience.

Today, each KL Swimwear piece is meticulously crafted to harmonise style, comfort, and functionality, catering not only to the discerning tastes of the fitness community but also to a broader audience.

What has the learning process been like for you as someone that doesn’t come from a fashion design background?

The learning process has been demanding, characterised by extensive trial and error, with numerous setbacks along the way. Initially, there was a scarcity of mentors or resources available to impart the necessary skills, particularly in

Australia where domestic manufacturing is limited due to cost constraints and a reluctance among manufacturers to share their expertise.

Consequently, much of my learning was selfdirected, resulting in unconventional methods of production that are tailored to the unique demands of my designs. While these methods may not adhere to traditional construction techniques, they have proven to yield exceptional results in terms of quality and craftsmanship.

Moreover, I have undertaken the responsibility of mastering various aspects of running an e-commerce business, including managing the online store, social media presence, and communication channels.

What were your main goals when starting to make your own swimwear and then moving into producing it commercially?

I sought to cater to a niche market within the fitness industry, providing stylish and functional swimwear options for individuals with diverse body types and preferences.

When I first started making my own swimwear, my main goal was to bring my unique ideas to life and create pieces that aligned with my personal style and preferences. Initially, it was more of a creative outlet than a business venture.

As I transitioned into producing swimwear commercially, my goals evolved. I aimed to establish KL Swimwear as a reputable brand known for its exceptional quality, innovative designs, and commitment to inclusivity.

Additionally, I sought to cater to a niche market within the fitness industry, providing stylish and functional swimwear options

for individuals with diverse body types and preferences. Overall, my main objectives were to merge my passion for fashion with my entrepreneurial ambitions, while also filling a gap in the market for swimwear that not only looks great but also performs well and makes everyone feel confident and comfortable.

How do you usually come up with your designs? Is there a process you work to? When it comes to designing, inspiration can strike from various sources. Sometimes it’s a particular colour palette or pattern that catches my eye, while other times it’s a trend I see emerging in the fashion world. Additionally, I draw inspiration from nature, art, and even my own experiences and travels. As for my design process, it typically begins with brainstorming and sketching out ideas. I then refine these initial concepts, considering

factors such as functionality, comfort, and versatility. Fabric selection is a crucial step, as I prioritise materials that are not only highquality but also offer the necessary support and durability for swimwear.

Once the designs are finalised, I work closely with my production team to bring them to life. Throughout the process, I ensure that each piece reflects the values of KL Swimwear: inclusivity, innovation, and impeccable craftsmanship.

In essence, my design process is a blend of creativity, practicality, and attention to detail, aimed at creating swimwear that not only looks stunning but also performs exceptionally well for our diverse clientele.

KL Swimwear is exclusively designed and made in Australia. Can you tell us about the decision to do things locally and what the manufacturing process is like?

The decision to exclusively design and manufacture KL Swimwear in Australia was driven by a commitment to quality, sustainability, and supporting local industry. By keeping production local, we have greater

control over the manufacturing process, ensuring that each piece meets our stringent standards for craftsmanship and ethical production practices.

Our manufacturing process begins with sourcing high-quality materials from trusted suppliers within Australia. We prioritise materials that are not only durable and comfortable but also environmentally friendly whenever possible.

Once the materials are sourced, our skilled team meticulously craft each piece, paying careful attention to every detail to ensure superior quality and fit.

...it allows us to minimize our carbon footprint by reducing transportation distances and supporting sustainable practices throughout the production chain.

By manufacturing locally, we also have the opportunity to support our community, create jobs and contribute to the local economy. Additionally, it allows us to minimise our carbon footprint by reducing transportation distances and supporting sustainable practices throughout the production chain.

Overall, our decision to produce KL Swimwear locally reflects our dedication to excellence, sustainability, and supporting our local community, while ensuring that our customers receive swimwear of the highest quality.

You have a small team working here in Coffs Harbour, can you tell us a bit about the team and how you came together?

Approximately two years ago, I made the decision to move my business back to my hometown, primarily to be closer to my family. Simultaneously, the need for more space became imperative, prompting the relocation to significantly larger premises. However, one of the most daunting challenges I faced during this transition was staffing.

Despite advertising for nearly six months, I struggled to find suitable candidates until I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a local organisation dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities in securing employment. Through this connection, I was able to assemble a small yet dedicated team composed entirely of individuals from the disability services sector.

Witnessing these remarkable individuals come together and work collaboratively has been truly inspiring. Each member of my team brings a unique perspective and unwavering dedication to their work, and it's a privilege to see them thrive in their roles.

We’ve noticed you’re very much about supporting others through your business and creating community around your brand. What do you see as the benefits of that ethos in this industry?

Indeed, fostering a sense of community and supporting others is at the heart of KL Swimwear's ethos. In an industry that often emphasises competition, we believe that collaboration and support can lead to greater collective success.

One of the primary benefits of this ethos is the creation of a loyal and engaged customer base. By prioritising relationships and community-building, we establish trust and authenticity with our customers, who in turn become advocates for our brand. This sense of community not only strengthens brand loyalty but also fosters long-term relationships that extend beyond mere transactions. Where can people check out your work and get in touch?

ROBBIE PACHECO

Robbie Pacheco is an accomplished photographer who is incredibly versatile and can capture everything from high fashion to landscapes, real estate and beyond. Recently he has been involved in exhibiting some of his landscape pieces at Nexus Gallery in Bellingen.

24 COFFS COAST focus

Hi Robbie. Can you share a bit about your journey into photography and what made you want to make a career out of it?

Hi, I guess you could probably pinpoint the start back in high school where I chose to do darkroom film developing as an extracurricular. At the time Mum was holding onto an old Yashica 35mm SLR that had belonged to my grandfather which I was then fortunate to inherit. Of course, this wasn’t the very start of my photography career but it did plant the seed. Fast forward a few years and after travelling the world with camera in hand I eventually decided to give it a real go and enrolled in a TAFE certificate

course which provided me with the technical foundations and know-how. Eventually through a friend at college I ended up picking up a photographer’s assistant position in a commercial advertising studio in Sydney. The rest, as they say, is history.

How would you describe your style of photography? Do you have any favourite types of shoots to work on?

I do love shooting people; be it fashion or portraits, just being able to make a momentary but meaningful connection...

One word, dynamic. Having trained in a variety of styles and techniques I learnt to adapt quickly especially when I was out of my comfort zone. A great example would be shooting food or still life which at first I found quite overwhelming. But under the right guidance from other established fellow photographers, I found I could learn rather quickly, and slowly the anxiety went away. I do love shooting people; be it fashion or portraits, just being able to make a momentary but meaningful connection and have the subject feel at ease is very rewarding to me.

THE ABILITY OF A SINGLE FRAME TO STIR SO MANY DIFFERENT EMOTIONS FROM THE VIEWER.

What have been some standout shoots or projects you’ve worked on so far?

Going back a few years while I was still living in Sydney I was part of a Tasmanian Tourism Campaign shoot. It involved photographing interesting, somewhat quirky characters in studio. It was a simple but colourful fun creative brief where everything came together really well and I was super happy with the images. Recently, I was involved in a fashion campaign shoot for ‘State of Embrace’ which is an amazing local Bellingen label. We got to shoot on a

beautiful property in Sydney and although it was a fast-paced jam packed day it was well worth the hard work.

What are you capturing when you’re just shooting for your own enjoyment?

Since moving up to this beautiful part of the world I have sort of found myself going back to where it all began in my photography and I have been shooting landscapes once again. I acquired a drone a couple of years ago and since then it’s been a steep learning curve which has provided me with many new creative options.

26 COFFS COAST focus
ROBBIE PACHECO

You’ve been involved in some exhibitions recently, can you tell us about them and anything else you’ve got coming up?

Ok, so yes that’s right, just this past Christmas I decided to join one of Bellingen’s great art galleries called NEXUS and took part in the first of 4 annual members’ exhibitions. It gives me an opportunity to showcase the landscape work I have been doing plus I get to see some incredible local talent and enjoy other mediums such as paintings and ceramics. This coming March/April NEXUS will hold their Autumn Exhibition where I will showcase two new works. The exhibition runs from March the 24th until April the 19th. Studio lighting or natural light?

Can I cheat and say both? To be honest this is a hard choice as they both provide such amazing creative possibilities and results. What do you enjoy most about photography?

The ability of a single frame to stir so many different emotions from the viewer. Where can we check out your work or get in touch?

instructor with a passion for fitness and making it fun! Deb loves to motivate and inspire her community, running classes for all abilities, ages and demographics. She has also used Zumba as a vehicle to fundraise for a number of worthy causes locally.

Hi Debbie. Can you tell us about how you first discovered Zumba and when you decided to start teaching it?

I discovered Zumba by default. I fractured my ribs during a ‘State of Origin’ mixed Touch game and I hung up my boots to look for another form of exercise.

I went back to my roots and passion to try a dance based class. A gym where I lived offered Zumba, I started and was instantly hooked. Later, my instructor Emma Leman asked if I would consider becoming a Zumba instructor. I completed my Basic 1

training in 2015. I have powered on since and have never looked back.

What do you think is unique about Zumba as a form of exercise and what do you enjoy most about it?

I love every aspect of Zumba. It isn’t just about exercise, it’s a community and lifestyle that embodies joy and happiness to improve mind and body health. The Zumba community is unlike any other with an inbuilt care and support system to raise each other, which is apparent at any Zumba class, event or conference in the world.

Zumba is for everybody and every body! Zumba offers a distinctive approach to

fitness and has a class style option for everyone, offering land and water specialty styles to pique people’s interests and objectives.

Our El Jefe BETO PEREZ leads by example and is respected. He is passionate, grounded and humble. He encourages us, but also reminds us that class is ALL about the students and there is no room for divas!

Zumba HO encourages us to be community conscious and fundraise for good causes and projects within our community. I have used Zumba as a vehicle to fundraise for certain projects over the years and most recently for LIFELINE North Coast.

28 COFFS COAST focus

Like every Zumba instructor, I am grateful to have a gift to change people’s lives with what we do. In every class we watch the joy, happiness, smiles, positive vibe during class and the post class afterglow, observing the friendship circles, genuine support and kindness they show each other. Zumba is much more than just an exercise program.

low to high intensity dance and fitness classes with land and water based options, covering a comprehensive range of different styles for clients. I run classes 5 days a week in Sawtell, Toormina, Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga and pop-up classes on some weekends. My timetable is available on my FB page Zumba with Debbie Leaney.

Receiving the STAYING ACTIVE grant in 2022 funded by NSW Health & Vitality Club allowed me to commence and sustain two fitness variety classes and Aqua Zumba for the over 50 demographic.

My most popular class I branded SPICE OF LIFE, is a combo of my specialties Zumba in the Circuit, Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, Sentao, Zumba Nation (HIIT) and CIRCL Mobility. I adapt to the ability of my clients with ages varying from 35 years up to 80+. My students love this format, as it is different to any other class. They comment on how they have improved their quality of life due to attending my class, as it focuses on improving mobility, balance, strength and cardio.

I have used Zumba as a vehicle to fundraise for certain projects over the years and most recently for LIFELINE North Coast.

Adding my NEW 12 minute CIRCL Mobility at the end of my classes has proven to be very popular with students. The mix of traditional stretching, yoga and pilates increases their mobility with flexibility and breath work.

Who are your classes open to? Do you need to have any level of experience or fitness to keep up?

Zumba is just another dance fitness class and is not an effective exercise program. FALSE.

Zumba - the MASTERS OF FUN. People believe Zumba isn’t an effective workout compared to other fitness options in the fitness arena because it’s fun. Zumba offers specialty class options to improve heart and lung health, muscle tone and strength, mood, balance and mobility. Custom made music from Zumba Music Lab combined with world music and rhythms plus fun elements makes working out enjoyable and not a chore, yet you are still working hard. Hence EXERCISE IN DISGUISE. This makes Zumba a sustainable fitness choice and it ensures you get the most out of your limited work out time with proven effective results. What are some of your plans and aspirations for your Zumba practice and classes moving forward?

Can you tell us about the classes you run?

As an independent Zumba instructor I offer

My classes are open to anybody, any level and ability. I feel confident that with my experience and qualifications, I can direct them to the best program to suit their goal. My guidance can help them decide which work-out style fits best to make their fitness journey enjoyable, effective and sustainable.

What are some common misconceptions about Zumba?

My passion to help people live a better and healthier lifestyle will continue to flourish and build, as I head towards my 10th year of spreading Zumba joy, happiness and dance and moving from hobby status to full time. I have built trusting relationships with my loyalty, knowledge and experience being my key strengths. Whilst I can still rock a Zumba Fitness class with a combo of routines drawn from a decade and an injection of fresh new choreography, I can also bring it back to a beginner’s level. One of my students stated recently ‘They love my classes because they never know what they are going to get”. I will continue to teach at this level on land and water until I feel I have nothing to offer students. My focus to specialise in the over 50’s demographic will be a natural progression as I age.

LEANNE SINGLETON & LOUISE INGRAM

Leanne Singleton and Louise Ingram are participating in the Shitbox Rally Autumn 2024 in April, which involves driving a car worth less than $1500 across Australia from Adelaide and finishing in Perth. e rally is Australia’s largest independently-run fundraiser for e Cancer Council.

Hello Leanne and Louise.

Can you explain to our readers what the Shitbox Rally is and what the goal is?

Louise: The Shitbox Rally is a fun way to raise funds for The Cancer Council, specifically for cancer research. The rule is you can’t pay more than $1500 for the vehicle and it can’t be a 4WD or AWD and the route is mostly rough off-road terrain crossing from one side of the country to another.

Leanne: It’s not a race – it’s about getting your Shitbox to the finish line. This triannual event by Box rallies has raised over $38 million for cancer research since it started in 2009. Being a part of this fundraising rally allows us the opportunity to contribute much needed funds

to support ongoing research to end all cancers and to encourage others to do the same.

How did you first hear about it and what made you decide to give it a go?

Louise: I had heard about it a few years ago but it was in May last year when I went to a friend’s fundraising event who was doing the Rally and I thought to myself I need an adventure like this and it’s all for a good cause.

Leanne: I’d never heard of this event however when Louise casually asked if I’d like to be a co-driver in the rally it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. I didn’t think we’d be selected so it was a surprise to find out that not only had we been selected, but that this rally was a far flung one, from Adelaide to Perth via Yulara.

What are some of the details of the road

trip you’ll be doing?

Louise: First of all the start line is in Adelaide, so we have to make it there first. Then we go up the Oodnadatta Track to Uluru and drive down through the desert to Perth.

Leanne: We’ll leave Coffs Harbour on the 9 April to drive the first 1,800km to Adelaide. The rally starts on the 13 April for a 3,800km drive to Perth in a convoy of 225 rally teams with 15 support teams. As Louise mentioned, it’s a 3 day pilgrimage up to the Oodnadatta Track then onto Uluru, past Kata Tjuta and towards the Gibson Desert down the Great Central Road to the south west and onto Perth. There’ll be lots of stunning scenery and we’ll be hosted by remote communities at Roxby Downs, Oodnadatta, Yulara, Warburton and Laverton. If it all goes well, we and our

30 COFFS COAST focus

Shitbox should arrive in Perth on the 19 April.

What do you think the biggest challenges might be for you guys?

Louise: I think the biggest challenge will be the fact that our vehicle is pretty low to the ground and could sustain damage to the underside of the vehicle.

Leanne: It’s a long way to drive with some really rough conditions so it will be a team effort to achieve this. There’s lots of unsealed roads to test not only our Shitbox but us as well. Although we all do a lot of driving living in a regional area, its not normally on rough roads in old cars!

made that with big thanks to our local community who have contributed. Our main fundraising event was at the beginning of February at the Toormina Hotel. The event was a huge success thanks to the staff at the Toormina Hotel and all that came along and contributed.

We’ve been overwhelmed with the generosity from family, friends and work colleagues who have dug deep to donate to this cause.

You’ve been raising funds for The Cancer Council to get you entered into the challenge, can you explain how that works and share a bit about some of the fundraisers you’ve done so far?

Louise: Yes, it’s a minimum fundraise of $5,000 to qualify to do the rally and we’ve

Leanne: We’ve been overwhelmed with the generosity from family, friends and work colleagues who have dug deep to donate to this cause. We’ve had many supporters who’ve tinkered with the car to make sure it will get us to the other side of Australia. Thanks to Smart Signs and Graphics for transforming our 2007 Ford XR6 into a Thelma and Louise car and to Cutlers Tyrepower for the tyres to get us there. Sounds like the community has got involved in backing you. Who has helped with the fundraising so far and how else can people continue to get behind you two and this cause?

Louise: The Toormina Hotel is our main sponsor, so we just want to give a huge shout out to the managers and all the staff there. We surpassed our personal goal of raising $7,500 so we couldn't be happier and super grateful for all of their support. What are you most looking forward to about the challenge itself?

Louise: I’m really looking forward to meeting all the like-minded people that will be on this trip, and obviously the drive itself is going to be absolutely awesome.

Leanne: It’s an adventure to go off the beaten track though the outback and to do something out of the everyday. The camaraderie of doing a rally with 500+ people is something that we’re really looking forward to.

How can we follow along and see more of your journey?

Louise: I’ve created a Facebook page and I’ll try and post as often as possible while on the road: FB: Shitbox Rally - Team Thelma & Louise If anyone would like to make a donation the link is: https://autumn2024.shitboxrally.com. au/thelma-and-louise

Asheley Goodwill

We talk with Asheley about the vital work of the Koala Habitat Restoration Project. Asheley sheds light on the project’s collaboration with local landholders, community groups, and organisations to enhance koala habitat on private land.

Hi Asheley. Can you tell us a bit about your role with Local Land Services and the Koala Project?

I work for North Coast Local Land Services (LLS) as a Senior Land Services Officer focusing on our Koala Habitat Restoration Project. I work in the Natural Asset Protection Team at LLS with an amazing group of people who are dedicated to helping North Coast landholders improve natural resource management actions on their land. The Koala Project is just one of many that our Natural Asset Protection Team manage.

What is the Koala Project and what are some of the goals you have for the project?

Funded by the Australian Government’s Saving Koalas Fund, the Koala Project works with landholders, traditional owners, community groups and local contractors to improve koala habitat on private land. My goal for this project is for landholders to learn about koala habitat conservation and to be supported to manage their property for koalas, and other biodiversity, into the future.

Who have been some of the collaborators on this project and what has their input

been like?

At the start of the Koala Project, Local Land Services, following a model developed by the NSW Koala Strategy, established a Coffs Harbour – Bellingen Koala Recovery Partnership. This group includes representatives from organisations such as Landcare, Coffs Harbour District Local Aboriginal Land Council, Local Government and others who are working on koala conservation in our area. Together we have shared knowledge on topics like strategic koala habitat corridors, opportunities for cross tenure collaboration and restoration techniques. We are grateful to this group and all our project partners for their hard work and dedication to koala conservation in the region.

My goal for this project is for landholders to learn about koala habitat conservation and to be supported to manage their property for koalas and other biodiversity, into the future.

What have been some of the benefits and challenges of working with local landholders as opposed to public areas?

Across NSW, a huge proportion of koala habitat is found on private land, making the protection

of these areas critical for the survival of koalas. I think a huge benefit of working on private land is that you can support local landholders to achieve their restoration goals. For some of our landholders, this looks like planting thousands of trees and dedicating their time to maintaining them and seeing the bush transform before their eyes. For others, this may mean improving fencing to keep livestock out of vegetated areas and supporting mixed purpose farms (conservation and agriculture). The actual on ground works can be really challenging and we are grateful to work with experienced and skilled contractors who can share knowledge with landholders and improve their understanding of restoration techniques. Ultimately, being able to see the significant change to individual lives, as well as the great ecological outcomes makes the project all worthwhile!

What outcomes are you hoping to see for koalas through this project?

We are hoping to improve the condition and extent of koala habitat on private land in what’s called the Coffs Harbour – North Bellingen Area of Regional Koala Significance. We will achieve this by planting trees, controlling weeds, excluding livestock from vegetated areas and implementing fire management actions. By the end of this project, we will have revegetated 80 hectares (112 soccer fields!), and controlled weeds in an additional 250 hectares of koala habitat! By enhancing existing areas of koala habitat and creating new koala habitat, we hope that there will be more safe refuges for koalas in the years to come.

Consider improving the condition of koala habitat by removing weeds, creating tracks that koalas can move through and maybe planting koala habitat!

What are some of the biggest risk factors for our local koalas? Koalas across NSW and in the North Coast are threatened by:

• habitat loss, modification and fragmentation

• disease (chlamydia)

• vehicle strike

• intense prescribed burns or wildfires that scorch or burn the tree canopy

• predation by wild or domestic dogs

• heat stress through drought and heatwaves

• human-induced climate change.

The NSW Koala Strategy is working to address all threats to koalas. In our Koala Project, we are working specifically on improving connectivity of habitat and supporting vegetation corridors that will help create resilience to climate change impacts.

There was an information event held at Friday Creek Retreat recently, can you tell us about the event?

We hosted a Koala Conservation Workshop, with Coffs Harbour Regional Landcare at Friday Creek Retreat on Wednesday March 20th. The event included a presentation from a koala behavioural expert, a live detection dog survey, and a weed control demonstration. The event was open to landholders who have koala habitat on their property and are interested in

learning more about how to manage these areas. We are also really excited by the interest in koala habitat restoration from the Upper Orara area and are sure that the event inspired landholders to approach conservation as a community. For those wanting to do their part, how can we get involved in helping our local koala population?

There are many ways to support koalas in the North Coast regardless of if you have koala habitat on your block! Here are some things that all landholders can do to help our koala population:

• Always drive safely in koala habitat areas, especially during the breeding season (Spring and Summer) and around dawn and dusk. When you see a yellow koala sign, slow down!

• Make sure your backyard is koala safe, if you have fencing consider making it wildlife friendly with a top and bottom strand of plain wire. If you have colourbond fencing consider making wildlife bridges so that koalas can climb out if they find a way in.

• If you have a dog, keep it on the lead in areas of koala habitat, keep your dog inside at night and never let it roam in bushland.

• Have you seen a koala in the wild? Log all koala sightings in the Citizen Science App IspyKoala.

If you have a bush block or agricultural block you may like to consider how you can manage

the property for conservation and production. Think about how koalas can move through the property, for example if there are a lot of weeds this may obstruct koala movement and alternatively if there are no corridors through paddocks koalas may not be able to move through the landscape. Consider improving the condition of koala habitat by removing weeds, creating tracks that koalas can move through and maybe planting koala habitat! You can also join your local Landcare Network and sign up to Local Land Services Newsletter to be updated on conservation projects like this one. Where can readers find out more information or get in touch?

PFLAG

MONDAY 22 APRILSUNDAY 28 APRIL 2024 is Lesbian Visibility Week 2024 where we all celebrate the power of sisterhood by uplifting incredible LGBTQIAP+ women from every generation. One community, so many brilliant individuals. With this is mind I wanted to interview a close and wonderful lesbian friend and find out her take on the subject.

Chonny, you are more than just your gender identity - how does your background influence who you are? I am made up of many weird and wonderful things. From my cultural background as a Kuku Yalanji and Torres Strait Islander woman, to a survivor of traumatic life experiences which have definitely shaped who I am today.

Do you think visibility days are important for our community from an educational perspective? Absolutely! For many years we were shunned or made to feel inferior and forced many to stay in the closet, unseen. Being visible allows you to be seen. I lived in the closet once, but never again!

What have you experienced realising you are gay and how was that for you growing up? I learnt that friendships are conditional. I did lose friends when I came out as an 18 year old, but one motto I’ve always lived by is “do what makes YOU happy”. You will find your true tribe.

THE LAND, THE SEA, THE PEOPLE, THE CULTURE, THE LANGUAGE THAT IS SO FREELY SHARED BY TRADITIONAL OWNERS IS HEART WARMING.

What kind of work do you do? Do you work in the queer space? I’m a Youth & Family Worker at Blue Sky Community Services and I also do casual disability support work. As a Youth Worker, we run a program called BYP (Be Young & Proud) which is a safe space for our young rainbow community to socialise and discuss issues that may be impacting them.

I’m also involved with the Coffs Coast Suicide Prevention Initiative (please follow them on FB). The stats for suicide within the Rainbow community are too high, so I’m very grateful to be a part of this initiative and to help raise

awareness within the community.

Do you think groups like PFLAG+ are important? Yes. What a wonderful way for parents and friends to learn how to support their loved ones and to share stories to support and uplift each other.

What do you love about the Coffs Coast and how do you spend your time off? I love living on Gumbaynggirr Country with my partner Lisa and stepson Mitchell. It’s heaven on earth! The land, the sea, the people, the culture, the language that is so freely shared by Traditional Owners is heart warming. I have such huge respect for the people here, oh and I love following Pink around the country. I saw her 4 times during her Summer Carnival Tour, so I'm a bit obsessed!

Sarah McKenna

Sarah McKenna grew up here on the Coffs Coast listening to her father playing guitar, and she has always had a deep love of music. After years of feeling too fearful to give singing a real shot, she finally broke out and took the plunge of starting to perform live, and her music career has taken off ever since.

Hi Sarah. Can you give us a bit of the back story as to how you got started in your music journey?

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to sing. My father used to play his guitar and sing to my sister and I when we couldn’t sleep, and I in turn, fell in love with music and the peace it brought me. Unfortunately the fear of singing held me back my whole life until about 4 years ago when I finally decided to take the plunge and enrolled in music performance at Coffs Harbour TAFE. This forced me to get on stage and face my fears head on. The encouragement of the teachers and fellow students really gave me confidence and in March 2022 I had my very first paid gig.

How would you describe your current sound, and how has your music developed over the years?

I’ve always loved the sound of the acoustic guitar and particularly those who played by plucking the individual strings with their fingers. This is known as 'finger style'. Without much intention I started playing the guitar as a teenager and just naturally played in this style and it has stuck with me to this day. I fell in love with this style of playing and it drew me to artists such as James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Jewel, Bic Runga and Tracey Chapman, just to name a few. These artists have heavily influenced my current sound and songwriting.

Can you talk us through some of your creative process, from an idea for a song to the finished piece? Where do you often draw inspiration from when writing music? Someone once told me that people write music for either two reasons. One, is to please others and two, is to please themselves. I write for the latter reason; I write in response to events that occur in my life. When something significantly good or bad happens in my life I find myself picking up the guitar and playing. It's extremely therapeutic and I guess in some ways, it's a form of journaling. It helps me make sense of my feelings and the world around me. I never write music simply for the sake of writing. It's just not how it works for me.

I usually begin writing by playing around with

different chord progressions, using fingerpicking patterns and then I find a nice melody and add the lyrics last of all.

What have been some of the highlights of your musical career so far?

To share my original songs and have people enjoy them and resonate with the message in my music is the greatest sense of accomplishment I have ever felt.

I’ve been busy over the past year writing and recording songs for an album I am set to release in winter this year. I’ve been lucky enough to work with two amazing producers; Jack Butcher from 'flatjacksounds' in Yamba, and Coffs' very own Joshua McGovern who plays around the Mid North Coast under the stage name 'Little King'. This will be the first album I've ever recorded and I'm beyond excited to get it out there and share it with the world.

Since my first gig in March 2022 things have really taken off for me and I have been lucky enough to play regularly in some beautiful places and venues. Without the support of these venues and clients, my dream of playing music for a living would not be possible so I am very grateful for their support. One place that holds special meaning to me is the beautiful 'Ulong-Cafe in the Valley'. Every Saturday at the café is music day and the locals and café owners welcome musicians from all levels and genres to play to the most music loving audience I have yet to encounter. Playing at the 'Café in the Valley' is the highlight of my month and it is well worth a visit for the award winning food, spectacular scenery and exceptional company.

your favourite artists to cover.

My true passion is to play my original songs but I also really enjoy finding popular songs and making them my own. From Melanie Safka to Bob Marley to Harry Styles; I feel that my current set list will cater to audiences of all ages and music tastes. I will be joining forces with the talented Mitch Young to form a duo we have named Smitch. This will be a big step away from my current chilled out acoustic shows and we will be providing audiences with a more dance driven, high energy set. We will be covering a wide range of modern and popular upbeat hits covering artists such as Whitney Houston, Dua Lipa and The Weekend. Our first show was at the Pier hotel on the 8th of March!

What can people expect from a Sarah McKenna live show?

Without much intention I started playing the guitar as a teenager and just naturally played in this style and it has stuck with me to this day.

You can expect to hear some very unique versions of songs like you’ve never heard them before. You are guaranteed to know at least a few songs from my set list and every week I endeavour to learn new songs so my shows stay relevant and fresh. I of course also love to share my originals any chance I get. My solo style is relaxed yet lively. My voice is where the magic really happens and the soothing melodies are what captivate my audience the most.

Where can people have a listen, follow your journey or get in touch?

You can listen to my music on platforms such as Sound Cloud, Spotify and YouTube under the name of SarahMckennamusic.

The last two years have been the most exciting musical adventure. I’ve had a ball playing at Valley Fest and the Iconic Timber festival; I've sung carols to excited kids at the Coffs Harbour Christmas carols; and travelled to remote and beautiful locations to serenade some lovely couples as they walk down the aisle.

As well as your originals, you also play some covers. Can you tell us about a few of

I am also available as a duo or solo for private functions, including weddings, and can be contacted on 0434 016 397.

I'm looking forward to seeing where my music takes me next. You can follow my journey and keep track of upcoming gigs at https:// www.facebook.com/sarahmckennamusic or on Instagram @sarahmckennamusic.

Thanks Sarah.

We asked sta members of Forestry Corporation of NSW to share their favourite NSW State Forests places to visit. Why? Because who knows be er than those who look a er the forest and maintain these special places.

Ste Fore SECRETS

“Gumgali Track in Orara East State Forest doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves and the view is delightful! But my absolute favourite spot is Mobong Falls Track in Wild Cattle Creek State Forest. It’s a great bushwalk beside Mobong Creek, with a beautiful little waterfall and abundant birdlife. You can also enjoy a picnic (there are a couple of tables) or a cheeky little swim.”

- Renee, Forestry Worker

“Coopernook State Forest is one of those places that slowly grows on you with repeated visits. There is so much history there, and I understand why people refer to it as such a peaceful spot. It really is!”

- Leah, Partnerships Leader

“Tirrill Creek in Bulga State Forest. Subtropical rainforest can be found in spots along the creek line, as well as scenic rockpools for splashing your feet in. Pretty special.”

- Mark, Ecologist

“Once a year, we travel with a few other families and stay at Moonan Cottage in the small town of Moonan Brook at the western base of the Barrington Tops. We take day trips to ‘the Tops’ and our must stop places always include Moonan Outlook, with views for days to the south and west and brilliant sunsets. It’s just magic”

“My favourite site is around Sealy Lookout in Orara East State Forest near Coffs Harbour. It’s not too remote, easy to get to and there’s some great lookouts and walks in unique areas.”

- Owen, Forestry Worker

“I love a bit of fishing, so Koondrook and Perricoota State Forests adjacent to the Murray River down on the Victorian border are always on my list. Great spots for fishing for native fish (Murray Cod and Yellow belly) as well as boating and kayaking. Bermagui State Forest on the NSW South Coast is also excellent for fishing and camping, while Currowan State Forest near Batemans Bay has good bass fishing and canoeing.”

- Rob, Partnerships Leader

“Guulabaa – Place of Koala in Cowarra State Forest between Wauchope and Port Macquarie. It’s so close to the Pacific Highway but still home to a beautiful native forest. It’s also home to WildNets, The Big Koala (part of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail) and the soon-to-be-open Wild Koala Breeding Facility managed by Port Macquarie Koala Hospital/Koala Conservation Australia. With picnic facilities and walking trails in development, and Bunyah Café coming soon too (thanks to Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council), this tourism precinct is a must-stop for any visitors to the Mid North Coast.”

LEE

Lee Millard-Newton has been a nurse for 51 years, the last half of her career spent as a specialist breast care nurse. Lee was instrumental in creating this role locally, and her contribution to how we manage breast cancer care here on the Co s Coast has been huge. More recently she has begun fi ing and supplying Amoena breastforms and bras to women following breast cancer surgery.

i Lee. Can you share a bit about your nursing career and how you came to be a specialist breast care nurse?

I have been a nurse for 51 years having completed my general training at Bowral & District Hospital and midwifery at the Mater Mothers’ in Brisbane. My first love was the Delivery Suite for 23 years.

In 1999, I became a breast care nurse, working part-time for Dr Bill Ross, Baringa Private Hospital and Breastscreen North Coast before commencing a full time role in Cancer Services where I remained until retirement in 2022. In 2011 I completed my training as a lymphoedema therapist.

Having experienced breast cancer yourself, what were some of the things that came

to light for you at that time about how we care for women with breast cancer?

When I was diagnosed for the first time in 1997, I was told what I needed to know, where to be and when – this was the 90s. I was told if I wanted information, I needed to have asked. I knew that we as health consumers deserved better. In 1998, I attended a conference in Canberra for people diagnosed with breast cancer. I heard women speaking of their experience with a breast care nurse. This conference led to the formation of the amazing consumer organisation Breast Cancer Network Australia and to my career change. I studied to become a breast care nurse ensuring other women and men diagnosed with breast cancer in my local area were provided with the information, care and support I was not.

My second and third diagnoses were a

very different experience as I felt part of a team making decisions together about my treatment, and yes, I found myself a breast care nurse to support me.

You worked for many years in cancer services, in a role you were involved in bringing about. Could you tell us a bit about that experience and what sort of things you did in that role?

In 1999, we established one of the first multidisciplinary teams in NSW for the management of breast cancer. A weekly meeting integral in the development of treatment plans for our patients which continues today. Dr Bill Ross and the local community were instrumental in the establishment of the fulltime role of Breast Care Nurse in Cancer Services at Coffs Harbour Hospital for which I was the

successful applicant, commencing in Oct 2001. To highlight the need for the role in our community, in 2001 I entered and won a Cancer Council NSW initiative ‘Nurse in a Million’ Quest. As a breast care nurse, I designed a model of care, developed resources, established a young women’s breast cancer support group, provided education and support to people diagnosed with breast cancer in an area extending from Corindi to Ebor to South West Rocks. I participated in national working groups to establish best practice guidelines for health professionals, supported our team in research projects one of which, an international clinical trial, changed surgery practice. Over the 23 years I worked as the

breast care nurse, I facilitated support groups and retreats, was the Chairman of the Board of a registered charity, consulted with many specialists and GPs, supported volunteers, collaborated with Cancer Council NSW, local primary health and Women’s Health on numerous projects including information evenings. With the help of many amazing volunteers over the years there have been BBQs, public gatherings, fashion parades and forums all raising awareness of breast cancer. Most importantly I felt privileged to walk alongside our patients.

You’re now working with Dr Salindera’s team at Coffs Harbour Breast Clinic, what are you enjoying about that role and how has it been different?

swimwear and post-surgery compression bras. Wearing fitted supportive bras following surgery enhances wound healing and improves comfort. A well-fitting bra and breastform from Amoena can help restore personal confidence which is so important when recovering from treatment. There is no greater compliment for me than to see a woman feeling wonderful about how she looks and importantly, feels, when leaving my salon.

What are some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of what you do?

There is no greater compliment for me than to see a woman feeling wonderful about how she looks and importantly, feels, when leaving my salon.

In 2022, I commenced working one day each week with Dr Shehnarz Salindera, Sharon and the team at the Coffs Harbour Breast Clinic to provide wound care for the clinic’s patients following breast and melanoma surgery. What I enjoy about this role is a connection I have with patients which is what I have always appreciated throughout my nursing career. I have opportunities to offer the patients information and support while listening to their stories. I love learning and am encouraged to do so as newer surgical techniques and treatments transform the breast cancer space. Importantly, I continue to participate in the multidisciplinary team meetings each Wednesday.

In recent years you have opened Roselee Boutique. What do you provide and why is this service so important for women who have experienced breast cancer?

After Lynne Saville retired from her many years of fitting and supplying Amoena breastforms and bras to women following breast cancer surgery, I opened Roselee Boutique in 2022 to continue supporting women in our community. I stock Amoena products of which I was very familiar – an extensive range including silicone breast breastforms, beautiful bras,

Rewarding: the women I am still seeing 20 years later, now visiting Roselee Boutique. The connections I have made, the many events we have held over the years and laughing and crying with the people I care for. I have loved my work.

Challenging: we are still not there yet, so much to learn about cancer. No matter how hard we try, there are people who succumb to cancer, my sister being one of them.

What advice would you give to women embarking on a cancer journey and their loved ones?

I think taking time to understand the information conveyed is so important. The terminology is often new which can be overwhelming in itself. We often feel afraid of what we don’t know, and for patients, information is reassuring. Feeling confident in the team of health professionals working together to provide evidence-based treatment is paramount. In Coffs Harbour, we are so fortunate to have highly skilled specialists. There is also a plethora of resources available to us now thanks to organisations including Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), Cancer Australia, Breast Cancer Clinical Trials Group and many others, none of which existed in the 90s. How far we have come.

Where can people find out more about Roselee Boutique or get in touch?

I work from home in Coffs Harbour and see women by appointment. I am best contacted on 0432 305 689. As an Amoena specialist fitter and stockist I am listed on the Amoena website: amoena.com/au

WHEN DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE MET A

NARCISSIST?

Have you met a person who is full of their importance, loves the limelight and attention and wants people to notice and admire them? Well, you may have met a narcissist.

There is a differentiation between a person who is a high-achieving, focused and goalorientated individual, and a narcissist who presents with multiple differing traits that affect others and themselves. An individual who displays narcissistic personality disorder can vary from person to person.

People with this disorder can have an unreasonably high sense of their importance. Seek out the accolades and attention from others, wanting admiration. They believe they deserve special rights and privileges and expect to be recognised as being superior without putting in any extra work to achieve this. They ‘talk up’ their talents and achievements and they believe that they can only interact with, and be understood by, people who are equally as special and important as them. They look down on people not on their level, or whom they do not feel are important.

People with a narcissistic personality disorder may have a preoccupation with power, success, and being special and brilliant. Watch out if you question a narcissist as they may not recognise or identify with your needs or feelings. They may lack the ability to understand, care or empathise with the

feelings of others. They are often unaware of the impact their behaviour has on other people. You may have your feelings or thoughts dismissed with a serve of criticism and bad behaviour if you question the special treatment they expect. They become critical and look down on you as unimportant. Beware, they often will take advantage of others to achieve what they want, being envious of others and believing others envy them. You may hear a narcissist before you see them, they will be bragging about themselves and their achievements and will come across as conceited.

When criticised, people with narcissistic personality disorder become impatient and angry. Their behaviours often are volatile and blow up quickly as they have difficulty managing their emotions and behaviour. This often impacts interacting with others, as often through their behaviours they may react with rage, and contempt and try and put you down, belittling you to make themselves look superior.

Stress and dealing with problems or adapting to change will often see the narcissist avoiding certain situations as they think they will fail. Perfectionism kicks in and when change occurs the narcissist may feel insecure, humiliated, and fearful of exposure as a failure.

Narcissistic people cause problems in many areas of life, such as work, relationships, community groups, and school settings.

However, under this façade of extreme confidence is a person who is unsure of their self-worth. They may be unhappy and disappointed in themselves if they do not get what they think they deserve. Relationships with a narcissist may be troubled, and problematic and you or others may not enjoy spending time with them.

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition. People with narcissistic personality disorder may not recognise any signs for themselves as they may not think there is anything wrong with their behaviour. They may seek help and treatment for other symptoms such as depression, anxiety, alcohol or drug misuse, or other health or mental health conditions.

If you recognise characteristics in a loved one or yourself, seek help from a healthcare professional. A healthcare professional can assist you in getting or providing you with the right treatment to make your life more rewarding, and enjoyable and enable you to navigate your relationships healthily and productively.

Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Fresh FOOD Di s

FOR DOGS

We know that the quality, quantity, and variety of foods we place in our bodies directly correlate with our health outcomes.

Consuming a balanced diet, rich in whole foods, provides optimum nutrient diversity, and includes bioavailable sources of proteins, fats, and functional carbohydrates.

We know that minimising processed foods containing synthetic nutrient fortification, preservatives, colours, and flavours promotes longevity and prevents disease. So, does this apply to our pets?

Studies are revealing that raw or lightly cooked whole-food diets, often referred to as BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods) or RMBD (Raw MeatBased Diets), and targeted supplementation can relieve common conditions such as pruritis (itchy skin) [*], otitis (recurrent ear infections) [*], osteoarthritis [*], and periodontal disease [*]. But the benefits don’t stop there. Research suggests that fresh diets can also help diversify the gut microbiome [*], and aid in the resolution of gastrointestinal upset [*].

While we actively encourage feeding a fresh food diet, we cannot stress enough the importance of doing so correctly, with the guidance and support of a Canine Nutritionist. Poorly formulated home-prepared

diets (such as chicken, rice, and vegetables) will not meet your pet’s nutritional needs, and while feeding bones is an essential part of your pet’s fresh diet, feeding the incorrect type can risk injury.

If you want to learn more, are considering making the switch to a fresher diet, or are already feeding fresh foods, we can help you feel confident that the food you are feeding, and how you are feeding it is safe, scientifically validated, and meeting your pet’s nutritional requirements. We offer in-store advice, as well as in-depth meal planning, and diet formulation via our Nutrition Consultations.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from a health condition such as any of those mentioned in this article, we emphasise the importance of having them assessed by a Veterinarian.

THE SECRETS OF THE Lymic

Signs of a Clogged Node and Non-Invasive Solutions

In the intricate dance of maintaining optimal health, few systems play as crucial a role as the lymphatic system.

Often overshadowed by its more glamorous counterparts, this network of vessels and nodes quietly orchestrates a myriad of functions, from immune defence to fluid balance. Yet, when this vital system encounters obstacles, the consequences can be profound.

One of the telltale signs of a compromised lymphatic system is the presence of clogged lymph nodes. Our lymph nodes don’t have a motor like our heart that automatically pumps, our lymph nodes need to be stimulated to open and close in order to remove toxins. These tiny, bean-shaped structures act as filters, trapping foreign particles and cellular waste. However, when overwhelmed by toxins, infection, or inflammation, they can become congested, hindering the smooth flow of lymph fluid. The

result? Swelling, tenderness, and a host of other symptoms that signal trouble brewing beneath the surface.

As we age the lymph nodes are not easily stimulated by simply just moving your body and normal daily activities, they need to be manually stimulated and when this is not known knowledge, our lymph nodes become clogged.

We can help you identify blockages and offer specialised treatments designed to kickstart the body’s natural detoxification processes.

But what exactly are the effects of a clogged lymph node on your health? Beyond localised discomfort, the repercussions can extend far and wide, impacting everything from immune function to skin health. Without proper drainage, toxins and waste products accumulate, creating an environment ripe for infection and disease. Furthermore, stagnant lymph fluid can impede the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen to cells, compromising tissue repair and regeneration.

Fortunately, in today’s age of advanced

BODY SOLUTIONS

technology and innovative therapies, noninvasive solutions abound for stimulating lymphatic drainage and restoring optimal function. At Platinum Beauty and Skin Clinic, we can help you identify blockages and offer specialised treatments designed to kickstart the body’s natural detoxification processes. Through a combination of lowlevel laser therapy, vacuum technology, and pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, our protocols target the body’s natural drainage system that improves not only your physical appearance but your health and well-being.

Long term!

In conclusion, understanding the importance of the lymphatic system and recognising the signs of a clogged node are crucial steps in safeguarding your health. By embracing non-invasive treatments tailored to stimulate lymphatic drainage, you can begin on a journey towards renewed vitality and wellness. Say goodbye to stagnation and hello to a healthier, happier you.

AGED CARE FEES

IConfused about aged care fees and what it all means? You are not alone. In this article I simplify the basics of aged care fees for you.

f you, or someone you love, needs to make a move into residential aged care, understanding the fees and getting a clear picture of what it will cost is not easy. There are all sorts of fees and you will come across a myriad of acronyms such as RADs, DAPs, MPIRs, MTAs and MTFs. Why so many fees? A move into residential care is essentially a move into a new home –just a home with built-in care and support. Just like living in your home, the fees for residential care can be divided into three categories:

• Paying for accommodation

• Paying for daily living expenses

• Paying for care services.

The way these fees are calculated is different to the spending choices you have while you live in your own home. The government sets some of the rules and fees. Other fees may be set by the care provider.

Paying for accommodation

Paying for your room is probably the most complicated part.

The cost of a room can be anywhere up to around $2.5m with the average around $400,000-$500,000. While you are not buying property, you still need to either find a lump sum of money to buy the right to live there or generate cashflow to rent your room.

This is a cost you need to fully fund, so it is important to make affordable choices. But if you are assessed to have low financial capacity, the government sets a different pricing structure and might help by paying some (or all) of the room cost.

Paying for daily living expenses

Once you move into care, many of the daily bills you receive for things like food, electricity, gas and cleaning will no longer come to you. Instead these are paid by the care provider and you will be asked to pay a flat daily fee to help cover the shared costs of these expenses.

Paying for your care

On average, the government currently funds around 75% of care costs, with the remaining 25% paid by residents according to a meanstest which determines financial capacity.

The decisions you make around how to structure your assets are important as they may impact how much you will be asked to pay. To help with planning there is an annual cap and a lifetime cap on the fees payable.

If you need to make decisions

Making aged care decisions on your own is hard. There are so many moving parts with family preferences, taxation, age pension, estate planning and fee implications.

As an Accredited Aged Care Professional TM, I can provide advice to remove the uncertainty and help you choose the best strategy for you.

KELLEHER MARTIN

REFINED RECOVERY & WELLNESS

Brothers Martin and Cameron Kelleher founded Refined Recovery & Wellness here in Coffs last year. They wanted to create a state of the art recovery space that was also a community hub for those who wanted to prioritise both their health and wellbeing.

Hi Marty & Cameron. Can you share a bit about your background and how you got into the fitness and wellness industry?

Our journey into the fitness, health, and wellness industry began with a profound love for sports and an active lifestyle. From a young age, we were deeply involved in various sporting activities. This early passion gave us a strong appreciation for the importance of physical activity and its positive impact on overall well-being.

We recognised that the connections we made within the sporting environment was a major contributor to our health and wellbeing growing up and decided to pursue avenues that would develop our skills to bring this facility to the Coffs Coast.

Marty pursued Higher Education in Sport & Exercise Science, Business, and Pool Operations, before combining with Cameron’s adeptness in trades and business to design a one-of-a-kind facility.

You’ve recently opened your new business, can you tell us how the idea for this space came about?

Through our personal experiences, we discovered that conventional recovery environments are often deficient in providing social connection which is what we see as a necessity to achieve progress and sustainability in leading a healthy lifestyle.

Our vision was to create an environment that facilitated improvement in mental and emotional wellbeing through social connection along with the well-known physical benefits.

Everything from the design, layout, recovery modalities, weekly programming and signature events has been created with this in mind.

DOWNEY LUKE

Luke Downey opened Fitstop here in Coffs Harbour only last year, but he has already created a welcoming, community vibe that encourages everyone to give things a go and support each other on their fitness journey. FITST

Hi Luke. Can you share a bit about your background and how you got into the fitness industry?

I was born and raised in Brisbane and have only recently moved to the wonderful Coffs Coast about 18 months ago. My partner is from Coffs Harbour and having a young family and the support of friends and family in Coffs made the move that much easier. In my past life I was a Personal Trainer and had my own PT business within a gym for a couple of years but then ended up in the construction industry for 15 years. I wanted a change and having always kept training in gyms, some big box gyms and more recently in a Fitstop on the Gold Coast, I got my passion back for the industry and with the changes that are happening in the construction industry now, it was the right

time to take the jump into fitness again.

I have always wanted to have my own business and so when the opportunity came to open a Fitstop in Coffs, I jumped at it. The ability to be able to help so many people and create a community around something that I love was such a big drawcard to a business like this. I get to spend every day with some great friends of mine and in a community of like-minded people where it never feels like work.

Can you tell us a bit about Fitstop and what makes it unique?

Fitstop is designed for what we refer to as the ‘Everyday Athlete’ with a heavy focus on performance and progression in a group environment to really bring that inner athlete out in everyone.

Within this we have 4 different session types, Lift, Perform, Condition and Sweat.

Lift is our strength based class so expect to see compound lifts, isolation exercises and stability/mobility to improve the movement quality and also the overall muscle development. We make sure you have plenty of time to hit that personal best!

Perform is a crowd favourite, think compound lifts, explosive movements, fast intervals and full body burners. This is the one session you don’t want to miss for the week!

Condition puts your cardiovascular and muscular endurance to the test through a variety of different full body workouts and high intensity conditioning.

Sweat is our FREE Saturday session. Think team workouts so you can bring along your friends and family to enjoy it with.

Our Saturday session is always free to our community. Being able to offer this session to the community is a great way for our

56 COFFS COAST focus
P
O

members to bring friends along but also a great way for everyone to try out exactly what it is that we do here at Fitstop. Along with that, once you download the app and set up your profile, you also get your first session free to try out any class you want.

You’ve got a great team of coaches working with you, can you share a bit about the team?

I do have a great team, I’ve been very lucky with the coaches that are working here at Fitstop. When we first opened, we had Em who has been in the fitness industry for many years and was also a well known coach in the area, having Em here to help with the open was invaluable. Although Em has moved on now, when she is back having her in the gym is always great and also a testament to what we have built here and that we have people continuously coming back.

Jorgie was also with us on open day and she is a great addition to the team. She’s a crowd favourite and everyone loves her warm ups but also the knowledge that she brings to the table is second to none and I have already learnt so much from her as well.

The community that we have fostered there is something that people are really enjoying. A lot of our members didn’t know each other before the gym and now they regularly meet up outside of the gym

What has the feedback from the community been like since you opened last year?

The feedback so far has been really positive. Everyone is loving the combination of the strength and cardio training. We offer focused strength training without the fear of overtraining and all while reducing the risk of injury.

her job overall so much easier.

Weight training is beneficial for everyone, especially as we get older. It helps increase bone density and decrease the risk of osteoporosis so we are finding that our program is really designed for everyone from the younger age groups right through to the older demographic as well.

What are some things you’ve got going on at the gym currently or coming up?

Ethan started with us after a couple of months and has really started to come into his own. His ability to mix technical explanations with jokes and humour make him a member favourite and I know that the gym is always in safe hands when I am not around.

Madde has just started working with us and her experience and knowledge in the fitness industry has been great. She has a lot of energy that she brings to each class and this is shown by the members' performance in each class that she takes. We also had Harri working with us as well and she was fun and bubbly and added a technical aspect to the sessions that was very welcome. Sadly she has moved on but having her in the space for the short time we did was amazing.

The community that we have fostered here is something that people are really enjoying. A lot of our members didn’t know each other before the gym and now they regularly meet up outside of the gym which is great to see. What are some of the benefits you see for people training with Fitstop? What do people often like about the kind of training you offer?

We are finding that our members are improving their overall strength and this is helping with tasks at work and around the home. One of our members works for the emergency services and she has said how much easier it is to perform her duties now that she has been weight training with us. She also says that her cardio has improved making

We have just finished our first challenge of the year and it was a success. It was a little different to other challenges in that it was only 21 days and was designed to create better habits instead of a drastic unsustainable change over a 4-6 week period. We found that people that took part in it were able to keep the good habits going and implement them into everyday life.

We are also implementing an “Intro to Fitstop” class for the over 50’s. We know that group training can be intimidating at times and we want to dispel that myth, that this is for absolutely everyone. The training can be adjusted to suit all fitness levels and we can also work around any pre-existing injuries so that you are still moving and getting something out of it.

Thanks Luke.

More recently there has been an overwhelming wave of information on this topic from the likes of Gary Brecka, Andrew Huberman, Wim Hof, Susanna Soberg and many other experts in their fields of health, fitness and longevity.

At Revive we have adopted some of these technologies we believe give the best result in terms of performance, energy production, recovery (all types) and general health.

Here is some of what we offer at Revive:

IV Vitamin Therapy:

IV Vitamin Therapy offers a direct route for

essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids to enter the bloodstream ensuring maximum absorption by bypassing the digestive system. This method increases potential benefits such as enhanced energy levels, immune function, and faster recovery times. Regardless of whether you’re a high-performance athlete or someone who just wants to stay fit, this method of nutrient delivery could really help to support your body to achieve whatever health goal you’re reaching for.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Cellular Oxygenation

The team at Revive IV Wellness are thrilled to introduce Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to our wellness centre.

HBOT involves breathing oxygen under pressure in a pressurized chamber, which significantly increases the oxygen concentrations in the bloodstream, accelerating the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. Hyperbaric Oxygen is a simple yet effective treatment with several benefits for various health conditions.

These include promoting healing at a cellular level speeding up wound healing and muscle recovery, reducing inflammation and swelling, improving immunity and infection fighting responses, and enhancing brain function.

HBOT is an excellent therapy in treating sports injuries by reducing inflammation, and enhancing recovery speed, making it

possible to return to your fitness regime faster or enhance your performance and endurance in general. It’s just a great way to speed up your body’s natural healing and defence mechanisms to get the most out of your body.

The HBOT treatments are customised to your needs and delivered by our trained medical staff.

Whole Body Red Light Therapy (photo biomodulation)

Many people link Red Light therapy to improving their appearance by removing fine lines and wrinkles, however, did you know it also stimulates cellular function? Cellular function is the key to unlocking our optimal energy levels, so why wouldn’t we want to feel energised and rejuvenated from the inside out. Potential effects of

Red-Light Therapy include reduction in inflammation, chronic

joint pain, healing of wounds at a deeper tissue and nerve level by increasing cell function which is also essential for immune health.

A whole-body red-light treatment offers a method of recovery and health for anyone wanting to enhance or improve their fitness and general health. With a simple 15 min session it has been reported by some of our clients that their pain has reduced, and their body feels looser and more relaxed. This being particularly after acute injury or heavy training sessions and often people report that they just feel more revitalized and recharged. This therapy is truly a game changer.

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) Therapy

You’ve probably all heard of or seen grounding mats on social media lately. The PEMF, or grounding mat we use at Revive uses what is called a Pulsed Electro-magnetic Field.

PEMF therapy uses electromagnetic fields to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. Just like being connected to the Earth’s magnetic field, which these days is often blocked by loads of rubber and concrete. But by laying on a PEMF mat we can enhance cellular function and promote the body's natural recovery mechanisms. This therapy can lead to improved performance, reduction of pain and inflammation, faster recovery from injuries and even help to heal bones. It's particularly beneficial in the context of sports and fitness, where you want to have the best energy possible without niggly problems in you body which might slow or even stop you from exercising and training at your best.

It should be noted that these treatment work very well together or in synergy with each other. So, combining HBOT, Red light and PEMF therapy in combination may give you even better results in terms of energy production, fitness endurance and general health maintenance.

REVIVE IV WELLNESS AND RECOVERY CENTRE

At Revive IV Wellness, we have extended our services to reach further into the health, wellness and recovery possibilities. Our clinic caters to all demographics with our customised treatment plans and options available, however, we have a personal interest and appreciation for our own health and fitness. With that said, we utilise all our services’ ourselves regularly and believe in its remarkable impact on our own bodies with both energy to perform and recover.

At Revive IV Wellness we are proud to be introducing Sauna and Cold Immersion Therapy and Normatec Compression Boots. Here’s a little about them both.

Sauna and Ice Bath Private Studio Space

Through the health and fitness industry or even your private recovery regime, you have heard or seen these in action. Revive is offering a private studio for Hot/Cold therapy which will include you having the studio to yourself and/or 3 other friends.

Our “Hot” services include both a spacious 12-man traditional sauna and hot bath.

The studio also includes 2x cold baths at varying degrees to suit those of you who prefer pushing your limits. Separately there are benefits to hot and cold therapy. These include but are not limited to; increased circulation, muscle relaxation and repair, release of endorphins, reduction in inflammation and serves as a pain relief. Heat exposure helps to increase blood flow to all areas of the body that it is applied, allowing for maximum relaxation and transportation of oxygen and nutrients optimising the healing process. Endorphins are neurotransmitters that respond to various activity in our body and be a form of natural pain relief and mood enhancer. The release of these endorphins during therapy

are like those released during an emotional release, exercise, laughter by promoting a feeling of relaxation and reduction of stress hormones.

Cold Therapy is also commonly used for recovery whether it be in recovery centres or at home in your home-made ice baths. Cold exposure constricts bloods vessels, which reduces the blood flow to targeted areas to reduce inflammation. Reduction in inflammation can result in alleviating any pain.

Overexertion of muscles during exercise, sports or day to day activity can increase your risk of tissue damage. So, by implementing cold exposure, you can reduce this risk by reducing metabolic activity to allow your body to recover more effectively.

60 COFFS COAST focus
By implementing cold exposure it can reduce this risk by reducing metabolic activity to allow your body to recover e ectively.

Hot and cold exposure used in combination takes your health and fitness recovery to the next level. Combining both therapies can induce “brown” fat thermogenesis which can increase our metabolism. Hot and cold exposure is best utilised for muscle recovery. Our trained staff are there to help you with the best protocols and techniques to get the most out of this therapy.

Normatec Compression Boot Therpay

Normatec Compression Boots are commonly seen to be used amongst top athletes for their own recovery and repair during and after intense training.

Revive IV Wellness offer this service to

our clients whether it be for an individual service or to be used in conjunction with our other services. Our boots cover your feet and travel the length of your leg. By inflating each boot simultaneously, compression is applied to your legs and a rush of blood flow is experienced when compression eases. This increases circulation to our legs leading to improved recovery. Not only do Normatec compression boots aid in our recovery and longevity in our fitness, but it also promotes lymphatic drainage. An increase in lymphatic drainage allows our body to release toxins that are built up and excrete through our kidneys.

At Revive, we offer 30 min compression boots sessions to optimise your recovery journey.

With all that said, deciding on the right recovery therapy can be confusing. BASKETBALL

Many people might not realise that basketball has the third highest participation rate in Australia for children aged 5-17 years playing team sports.

he Australian Sports Commission ranked only Soccer and Australian Rules ahead of Basketball in their most recent data for organised physical activities for children.

Basketball is booming in Coffs Harbour courtesy of the amazing work being done by the board and management of the local association. Coffs Harbour Basketball Association (CHBA) is a not-for-profit community organisation that operates junior competitions on Wednesday and Friday for more than 650 children and senior competitions on Monday and Tuesday nights for 250 men and women.

“We have made some strategic decisions recently to set the association up for the predicted surge in participation numbers over the next 5 to 10 years,” CHBA president Elliot Plater said.

“It is a battle catering for the demand in basketball, but we have allowed for future growth as the sport continues to grow, not only in Coffs Harbour but right around Australia.”

A renewed focus on delivering basketball to primary school students, courtesy of the Federal Government’s Sporting Schools Program, is expected to increase participation rates dramatically over the next 12 months.

playing

Head coaches Joe Greer and Flynn Taylor deliver the CHBA school program to more than 450 students on a weekly basis at Coffs Harbour, Crossmaglen, Narranga and St. Augustine’s primary schools in Term 1 this year.

“We’ve received some excellent feedback from the schools, and we already have students coming to the stadium to continue their basketball journey in our Ford Aussie Hoops Program,” operations manager Neil Goffet said.

“Our coaches are doing an amazing job in the schools, and we have great development programs and our under-10s competition for those who want to get into basketball.”

and Saturday mornings at Sportz Central and Thursday afternoons at Woolgoolga.

Another positive for the sport of basketball in Coffs Harbour is the opening of the new courts at Sportz Central following a multi-million dollar upgrade.

Ford Aussie Hoops is a nationally recognised Basketball Australia program for beginners of primary school age between 5-12 years.

“We’ve had lots of inquiries from schools who would like to have our basketball program in Term 2 which only confirms the high level of interest in our sport throughout Coffs Harbour.”

Ford Aussie Hoops is a nationally recognised Basketball Australia program for beginners of primary school age between 5-12 years.

From Term 2 onwards CHBA will be offering this fantastic program on Monday afternoons

The project was funded by $6.3 million from the Federal Government and $1.1 million from the State Government and was opened in March this year.

It included one additional basketball/volleyball court and the upgrading of two under-sized basketball courts into full-sized compliant courts.

“It’s great to have the new facility open and the additional court will not only help with growing the sport it will also put the association in a position to attract regional, state and national tournaments to Coffs Harbour. We will continue to work with Basketball NSW and all facets of government to provide more courts in the future as the sport continues to grow.” Elliot Plater said.

AND WANT TO MAKE IT

LOVE EXERCISE YOUR JOB?

e perfect rhythm of your feet hi ing the pavement, the graceful arches of your arms gliding through water or lining up that perfect shot and releasing a powerful kick. You’re in the zone and it feels amazing.

Someone who has made a career out of being ‘in the zone’ is Dr Scott Goddard, a graduate of Southern Cross University. Scott took his passion for sport and transformed it into studying flow states with Australia’s top athletes, including Olympians.

However, he had a few misses before hitting the net. When a promising soccer careerwhich saw him undertake trials in Germany - didn’t pan out, Scott had to figure out what to do next.

"I knew I wanted to be involved in sport in some way, so I undertook a greenkeeping apprenticeship between 2010 and 2014. Working at the Coffs Harbour Golf Club, I would see Southern Cross University just up the road and the thought of education gradually built in me. Towards the end of my apprenticeship, I was giving sincere consideration to study without really knowing how to go about it.”

Scott enrolled in Southern Cross University’s Preparing for Success Program (PSP), a fee-free pathway course that prepares students for academic study.

"The PSP was ideal. It provided clear information about my study options and obligations. I felt motivated and supported,” Scott said.

It is considered the Holy Grail for sports psychologists and athletes due to its association with positive subjective experiences and exceptional performances

With an interest in the intersection of sport and mental health, Scott studied a Bachelor of Psychological Science followed by an Honours year before undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

For his PhD, Scott investigated one of the more intriguing aspects of sporting performance –flow states – which refer to when a person becomes fully immersed in an activity, or ‘in

the zone’. In a sporting context, time seems to fall away, performance feels effortless and one's abilities and instincts are at their peak.

"It is an amazing psychological state and I am interested in seeing if a flow can be reliably induced on demand," says Scott. "It is considered the Holy Grail for sports psychologists and athletes due to its association with positive subjective experiences and exceptional performances."

Following the completion of his PhD, Scott joined Southern Cross University’s Faculty of Health, where he has continued his research through a project funded by the Australian Institute of Sport which investigated the optimal performance states, such as flow states, that underpin our Olympians’ and

Paralympians’ best performances.

and consistency as an athlete."

"Focusing on flow states opens up questions about how to approach different events, thinking about what you are trying to achieve, and being able to perform positively without experiencing unnecessary pressures or feeling let down by any perceived failure,” he says.

"Instead, you should set more open-ended goals and approach events with a sense of exploration rather than setting specific goals and ramping up the pressure. This can help athletes enjoy the experience more, while being able to perform at their best. This can also have a positive impact on your wellbeing, confidence

Scott’s journey with Southern Cross University is a great example for others pondering a return to study and putting their sporting passion into practice. The University has a range of degrees with career opportunities in sport and exercise:

• The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science might lead to a career as an accredited Exercise Scientist in sports coaching, strength training and conditioning, performance testing and talent identification, personal training and gym instruction, health promotion or occupational rehabilitation.

• The Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology

opens the way to a career as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) in private practice, hospitals, aged care facilities, community health, multidisciplinary allied health clinics, workplace health centres or rehabilitation centres.

• The Bachelor of Exercise Science and Psychological Science enables accreditation as an Exercise Scientist and strength and conditioning coach with opportunities in schools, sports science, coaching and health research.

• From 2025, the Bachelor of Physiotherapy* will enable graduates to work as physiotherapists in a range of settings such as hospitals, private practice, rehabilitation, sporting teams with athletes, aged care and in community health care teams.

“A big part of my passion comes from having had positive experiences in my own sport and exercise activities and knowing how beneficial that can be for my own personal wellbeing,” Scott says.

“This motivates me to really unpack what it is that creates positive sport and exercise experiences, how that can improve mental health and wellbeing, and how we can promote this for as many people as possible.”

*University approval pending. Bachelor of Physiotherapy subject to accreditation by the Australian Physiotherapy Council.

Testimonial - June last year my cousin offered me a membership to a gym…this was way out of my comfort zone but I decided to give it a go. My walking friend and I were talking to a lady at the foreshores, we asked what gym she went to…she told us Beachbodies Health Club. Later that morning I went in and met the beautiful Julia and Julia and my cousin did the rest. That first day was the hardest but I found everyone friendly, accepting, supportive and encouraging. WHAT IS

Cryotherapy?

CRYOTHERAPY is a non-invasive, fast and effective hyper-cooling treatment.

Your body is briefly enveloped in a fine nitrogen mist that is safely cooled to between -110 to -140 degrees for up to 3 minutes.

HOW DOES WORK?

WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE Cryotherapy

Exposing the body to intense cold for a short period activates a powerful survival mechanism that causes the blood vessels near the skin to contract (vascoconstriction) and re-route blood to major organs to maintain your core body temperature.

During this process, your blood fills with oxygen, nutrients and healing enzymes. Following your treatment, the blood vessels dilate (vasodilation) and the enriched blood rushes back to your skin and muscle tissues. Oxygenated blood is circulated and may increase collagen production and release anti-inflammatories to help relieve pain, soothe swollen joints and accelerate healing. In addition to anti-inflammatories, the release of ‘feel good’ endorphins may have you feeling positive, refreshed and relaxed.

Cryotherapy Treatment?

Cryotherapy can help you to:

• Relieve muscle soreness for sports recovery

• Relieve chronic pain and arthritis

• Accelerate injury and post surgery recovery

• Boost collagen production in the skin for antiageing benefits

• Reduce toxins in the lower levels of the skin for cellulite reduction

• Boost the metabolism to help you burn calories for longer

• Improve sleep, boost immunity and elevate mood

• Relieve symptoms of jetlag and hangovers

WHAT OUR Clients say...

“Where do I start? After suffering numerous health challenges, surgeries and my love for being active, I looked for something to further assist my overall health. I am so grateful that I did because it has truly changed my life! The relief I have experienced from the inflammation and muscle soreness is incredible plus the energy boost I get after each session is amazing, there is no feeling like it.

Not only that, my sleeping, immune system and stress levels have all improved dramatically and these are just touching the surface of the overall benefits that cyrotherapy provides. Jaime Cowling, who is the passionate owner of Cyro Recovery Coffs is a very thoughtful and caring person.

She takes the time to understand your individual needs and tailors your cryotherapy treatments accordingly. Her warm and compassionate nature creates a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere so you feel at ease throughout the entire process. I cannot recommend cryotherapy enough and I am so thankful for the positive impact it has had on my health and well-being and it is a true calling to make a positive impact in the lives of many others too.”

Steph FROST

Joanne MCINTYRE

“Jaime Cowling from Cryo Recovery Coffs is without a doubt absolutely amazing!!!! Almost 18 months ago I went off for my first treatment expecting it to be a one off as I hate the cold and wasn’t really expecting to see any changes. WOW, was I ever wrong! I liked it and quickly jumped in and booked in for further treatments and now go once a week.

I enjoy deep restful sleep, which is something I hadn’t had in a very long time. A dodgy back complaint and an old knee injury that the doctors told me I would only find relief by having a knee replacement is now no longer worrying me. After a major health scare last year with my heart, Jaime and her Cryo treatments have been a major factor in helping me get my health back on track. Jaime genuinely cares about her clients and it shows at each and every session, the follow up calls and messages and advice and a hug and smile if you are having an “off” day.

It’s an experience that is hard to describe but oh so beneficial and I am so thankful that Jaime has brought the “big freeze” to us all to experience on the Coffs Coast. Jaime we love you!”

“Jaime Cowling to me is the Cryo Recovery Coffs Cold Queen. It is coming up to 1 year this winter from when I first started my CryoRecovery Journey.

Last year, I had a full hysterectomy. This left me in menopause with some horrendous symptoms such as chronic anxiety and depression. After going through the protocol I was prepared for my weekly visits, which consisted of three minutes at -140°

There was apprehension of course, but more! This therapy brings me to a complete feeling of ease and relaxation. Jaime, my cold queen puts you at ease from the minute you meet her. To put it simply, this is one of the best therapies I have tried, aches, pains and my mental health are all improving. I can’t thank Jaime enough for bringing this incredibly cold, but amazing therapy to Coffs and surrounding areas! Thanks, My Cold Queen.

RELLE DONOVAN

Relle Donovan comes from a family of passionate Touch Football players who are well known and respected in the Coffs Coast sporting community. Relle has recently been picked to represent Australia in the Emu’s W40 team for the Touch Football World Cup in the UK!

Hi Relle. Can you tell us about your earlier experiences with Touch Football and how you got into the sport?

Both Mum and Dad played Touch Football. The Hart and Jarrett family is very well-known in Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Valley and Mid North Coast areas for sports. Growing up in a big family, there was always a Touch game in the front yard, on the beach or on the road.

What do you enjoy most about it?

It’s pretty much the only sport I grew up on. I love running and this game keeps me fit. I love playing with my family and friends. It's a great social outlet. Since playing representative, I have learnt so much about the game, it is so different from when I grew up to how it’s being played today. Teaching the kids I play alongside with at local comp has been awesome.

Touch Football has given me the opportunity to meet new people and become long life friends.

You have played many years of your Touch career here in Coffs, can you share

a bit about who you’ve played with, and what comps you’ve been involved in over the years?

I have been playing Touch Football since I was 12 years old. My first game was at York Street Oval, Coffs Harbour. When I was able to play in the senior grades, I started playing with my two uncles Uncle Grope (Steve Hart) and Uncle Tex (Tony Morris) and my brother, Shaun. I developed skills under these guys especially to be crazy competitive. My husband Anthony and I entered a few teams into the Summer Competition at Coffs Harbour Touch; Men’s C Grade, Women’s B Grade and Mixed B Grade. This included fathers and sons, mums and daughters. My daughter Keely and I also played A grade with Key Community Group. Because of our move, we weren’t able to play in the Grand Final with them.

I coached the Coffs Harbour W40 team for NSW Senior State Cup, this was a really awesome experience giving back to my hometown.

I have played a few mixed comps in Macksville with family and friends. Every year for NAIDOC Week, our family, the Harts, have a Touch Football Carnival in memory of my uncles who played Touch Football here in Coffs Harbour. Each year we have over 200 people play in this event and Coffs Harbour Touch has been amazing with supporting and hosting this event.

In 2023, I coached the Coffs Harbour W40 team for NSW Senior State Cup, this was a really awesome experience giving back to my hometown. I had family and friends that have come back to Touch Football and seen how different Touch Football is played today, we had so my fun. We played 5 games, lost 1. You did really well playing in Coffs Harbour again recently, can you tell us about that experience?

Amy Goode, a local Coffs Harbour Touch player and I played in the 2024 National

Touch League Championships with Canberra W45. We played against quality teams throughout the tournament. After our last game on Saturday, we placed 1st and played Pineapples in the semi final which we won 13-2. Onto the Grand Final against Hunter Hornets, we won 5-0 and I received Player of the Final. I have made semi finals at NTLs but never a grand final and to play that extra game and find the energy to give everything was physically and mentally challenging. I had a blister that was hurting, and every step was so painful, I had to just put up with it and run. I couldn’t walk well for a few days but I had a great time playing with Canberra and made some great friendships.

You have been picked to represent Australia in the UK for the Touch Football World Cup! Can you tell us how that came about and how you felt hearing you were going to be part of the Aussie side?

I played W40 Northern Eagles at National Touch League 2022 and my coach Mike Kelly made a comment I was being Talent ID for NSW State of Origin Team. In May 2022, I was invited to the NSW State of Origin trial for W40 Team, this was held in Sydney.

Making my Australian Emus Women’s 40 debut and my family being there to watch me will be something special. I am excited and looking forward to the atmosphere and playing against World Cup teams.

In June 2022 I was selected in the NSW State of Origin Women’s 40 team to play Queensland 19-20 August 2022 at Coffs Harbour International Stadium. This involved trips to Nelson Bay, Cronulla, and Penrith for weekend training camps. I had to commit to my own personal training making sure I was fit and strong as I was playing Middle. I enjoyed the experience and playing in my hometown in front of my family and friends. We won our State of Origin Series against QLD 2-1.

I submitted my EOI for Australian World Cup W40 team and received an invitation to

I have weekend training camps in April and June. For my own preparation, I will be training at Vidafit, Rockhampton. Their programming is amazing! Very specific to Touch Football.

I am very keen and excited to represent my country, family, friends, Coffs Harbour and the Nambucca Valley.

Where to from here? Have you got any plans or aspirations heading forward?

Continue and focus on my training, fitness, and personal goals before heading to the UK.

I would like to give back to the sport that has given me so much. Helping out with the younger generation coming through the Coffs Harbour and surrounding Touch Football Affiliates and helping build representative pathways.

With the January through March quarter coming to an end, many businesses are taking stock and assessing their current cash position. Typically, the December to January period can be quieter for certain businesses and that means you could be running low on cash reserves that are vital for keeping day to day operations running. Fortunately, there are two solutions that businesses can explore to potentially boost their reserves.

Asset Refinance

One strategy to consider is an asset refinance, particularly for recent outright purchases of equipment or vehicles made in the last six months.

With the value of hindsight, businesses may question whether it would have been more advantageous to finance these acquisitions upfront. By opting for a simple purchase and hire-back arrangement, coupled with competitive financing terms, businesses can replenish their cash without compromising their operations.

Asset refinance works by leveraging existing assets, such as machinery or vehicles, to

unlock cash that is tied up in these assets. Instead of outright ownership, businesses can opt for a financing arrangement that allows them to retain the use of the assets while freeing up cash for immediate needs.  This approach not only injects much-needed liquidity into the business, but also spreads the cost of asset acquisition over time. At the same time, asset refinancing offers the added benefit of preserving working capital for other essential expenses or investment opportunities as they arise.

Low Doc Working Capital

Another option worth considering is tapping into low-documentation capital facilities, which can provide a cash boost, or an ongoing overdraft-like solution tailored to the business’ needs.

Unlike traditional loan applications, low doc working capital facilities require minimal documentation, streamlining the approval process and enabling businesses to access funds quickly.

These facilities offer flexible repayment terms and access to funds on demand, allowing businesses to manage their cash flow effectively. Whether facing unexpected expenses, capitalising on growth

opportunities, or bridging temporary cash shortfalls, low doc working capital options can provide a versatile financial lifeline for a range of businesses.

Low doc working capital facilities are also designed to adapt to the evolving needs of businesses, offering scalability and customisation. Businesses can adjust the amount of credit they require based on their own changing cash flow requirements, meaning that the funds are available when they need them.

In conclusion, maintaining sufficient cash reserves is vital for ongoing effective businesses trades, especially during quieter periods. Asset refinance and low doc working capital offer two potentially valuable solutions to boost reserves swiftly. Whether you are in need of a cash boost now or wanting to strategically plan ahead for potential business growth strategies, it can be beneficial for businesses to review and address their financial needs with a broker or financial expert to effectively navigate these options and ensure sustained financial stability and growth for their business.

Microcredentials

THE BDC EXEMPLAR

In the dynamic landscape of education, adaptability and continuous learning are paramount. My school, Bishop Druitt College, has embarked on a ground-breaking journey introducing microcredentials across our secondary years as well as for our staff. These bite-sized certifications, designed to focus on specific skills, have emerged as game-changers, and have had a profound impact at our K-12 institution. At BDC, we understood it was important to develop an innovative, effective, and sustainable microcredential badging system for our students and staff as we could see the positive impact it was having in the tertiary and business sector with respect to motivation, learning and career advancement. We were also cognisant that even positive well-planned change in schools can be challenging at the start, and often messy in the middle even if the result is something to be extremely proud of.

We developed a plan and timeline that would meet our challenges to implement. To facilitate this process a focus group of staff was developed to research the history of badging in tertiary and secondary education sectors. The group interviewed key players in this space locally and nationally and we quickly realised that we needed an online delivery system that was stable, reliable, and responsive to the needs of the school. The focus group worked on this

project throughout 2022 before its launch. The following links outline a sample of the communication we provided to our community:

Our new microcredentials were officially launched at the start of 2023 and were immediately well-received by staff, students, and parents. ‘Credly’, the chosen delivery platform, notably collates statistical overviews that can be used to capture the engagement in the microcredentials. Between May and December 2023, we witnessed a remarkable distribution of 3,691 microcredential badges, across 13 faculties. This impressive number underscores the college’s commitment to cultivating a diverse range of skills and competencies. A shining example came from the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education faculty whose badge took centre stage, with 489 students receiving this recognition.

At Bishop Druitt College, our commitment to excellence is evident in the creation of 131 badges spanning various faculties. This reflects the institution’s acknowledgement of the multifaceted nature of education, catering to diverse interests and skill sets among both students and staff from leadership development to first aid training to developing cultural competencies.

We had hoped that students and staff would proudly share their microcredential badges

Education Update

through their social media platforms and indeed the influence of microcredentials quickly extended beyond the traditional classroom setting, as students and staff actively shared their achievements on LinkedIn and X. The Persistence in Mathematics: Level 3 badge emerged as the most shared student accomplishment, emphasising the value placed on cultivating perseverance and resilience in the face of academic challenges. Among staff, the Leader AI Conversation badge took the spotlight as the most shared on social media. This highlights the dedication of the college’s educators to staying at the forefront of educational technology and fostering innovative teaching practices. Furthermore, Leader AI Conversations not only garnered the most shares but also attracted the highest number of views on social media, indicating a collective interest and engagement within the educational community regarding AI and its implications for academic leadership.

The introduction of microcredentials at BDC has not only provided students and staff with opportunities for skill diversification but has also fostered a culture of sharing the endeavour and benefits of continuous learning.

JETTY

Foreshore

The jetty foreshore is a vision - a vision for our town’s future that encompasses growth, sustainability, and community spirit. The proposal to develop our foreshore into a vibrant mix of green spaces, shops, restaurants, and residential and tourist areas is not just a project, it’s a transformative step towards enhancing our town’s livability and prosperity. I understand and respect the concerns some have expressed about the transition of public land into spaces that include private development. I also recognise anxieties that accompany change, especially in a community as tightly knit as ours. It’s a sentiment that speaks to our collective desire to preserve the integrity and accessibility of our community spaces.

The Jetty will always remain accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The underlying concept of the development is about enhancing the quality of life for each one of us. The development enhances the foreshore to meet the needs of our growing community, providing amenities and social spaces that will be cherished by all.

The green spaces within this development are a cornerstone of the project. This vision buzzes

with life, where families picnic on lush lawns, children play in safe, green surroundings, and friends gather for meals overlooking the water. The natural beauty that is the hallmark of our town. These are the spaces where memories will be made and where community bonds are strengthened.

Developing the foreshore is about creating opportunitiesit’s a place where local businesses flourish, creating jobs and bringing innovation to our doorstep. It’s jobs for our young people, so they don’t have to move away to find work, and a boost for our local economy, ensuring that our town remains vibrant and sustainable for generations to come. It’s a place where tourism will flourish – a place which makes the most of what we have to offer.

I want to address the highly politicised culture that can often divide us, and in truth I wanted to write a curt response to council’s latest jetty

This project actually transcends political lines; and it’s true I don’t often commend the Labor State Government, but I thank them for continuing the jetty vision. That’s because this is about our shared future, our common goals. It’s about creating a legacy of prosperity, sustainability, and community for our children and their children.

I may be the representative for our beloved electorate but as a multi-generational fellow resident, I am also deeply invested in its future. In direct language, let me say this: this revitalisation is for you, for all of us. It’s a testament to our collective will to see our city not just survive but thrive.

ACADEMIC YEAR KICKS OFF AT SOUTHERN CROSS UNI

COFFS

Nearly 350 new students began their university journey last month at Southern Cross University Co s Harbour Campus, as the 2024 academic year got underway.

Careers in health are in the sights of many students, with nursing and occupational therapy among the largest new student cohorts, together with education for our teachers-to-be.

Also popular was marine science, taught from the University’s National Marine Science Centre at Charlesworth Bay.

Just a few weeks into his first year at university, Jack Cunningham from Korora said he was looking forward to his Bachelor of Science (Marine Systems) studies.

“I’ve done a lot of scuba diving and always had a passion for the marine environment. The facilities at the Centre are great and studying so close to the Solitary Islands Marine Park is definitely a bonus.” he said. Also a hit this year was the Preparing for Success Program (PSP) and the Diploma of Health. The PSP is a three-month full-time

or part-time equivalent pathway course in academic and study skills that enables entry into a range of degrees while the Diploma of Health is a pathway for many students into bachelor degrees in health.

Diploma of Health (Nursing) student

Cindy Ram Cin Par said she had really enjoyed her first few weeks on campus. “It’s been so good, I’ve already made a couple of friends. My goal is to go on to a Bachelor of Nursing once I finish the Diploma.”

Southern Cross still holds a clear vision for Stage 2 of the multi-million-dollar Health Precinct at the Hogbin Drive Campus. The plans envision a second building and the inclusion of a community health clinic with speech and voice labs, mental health and therapy rooms, rehabilitation and exercise studios and consultation rooms.

Head of Campus Professor Les Christidis said he was excited to see what the year had in store. “It’s great to see all these new faces on campus and especially good to see them using the new Health Sciences Building at

The expanded precinct would provide clinical placements for students, state-ofthe-art laboratories and teaching facilities in bioscience, anatomy, physiology and chemistry and simulation labs to support STEM degrees.

coming to Coffs in 2025

An exciting addition to the health portfolio next year will be a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, which will make its Southern Cross debut at Coffs Harbour Campus in March 2025.

Chair of Human Sciences Associate Professor Chris Stevens said the significant facilities at the campus, coupled with the solid community of clinical specialists, made it a logical place to launch the degree.

“We have been teaching degrees in sport and exercise science and exercise physiology for many years now at Coffs, and have even

“We also have a major base hospital nearby and an international sports stadium on the campus doorstep where the city hosts many major events every year, so placement opportunities are abundant.

“Physiotherapy represents an important new program for us at the university and gauging by the interest we have received, I think it’s bound to be a very popular course.”

Professor of Physiotherapy Maria Constantinou said she had no doubt of the demand for places.

“As a career, physiotherapy crosses a very wide field. You could find yourself working with children, the elderly and all age groups

in between.” she said.

Professor Constantinou has worked as a consultant sports physiotherapist and coordinated physiotherapy services at major events like the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

“The good thing about it as a profession is that it is always evolving. The places where you work can range from hospitals, private practice, sporting organisations right through to aged care and community healthcare settings.

“We’re always trying to move people to better health, wherever they may be.” she said.

Employment projections from Jobs and Skills Australia has physiotherapy showing very strong job growth to 2026, in line with the strong demand for healthcare and social assistance as a sector.

Hannah Fifid

We sat down with Hannah Fifield, a budding brewer with a passion for cra ing the perfect pint. Her journey into the world of brewing began amidst the vibrant cra brewery scene of East London. From mastering the art of pouring to cellar management, her fascination with beer led her to pursue formal education in brewing. Currently completing her Certificate III in Brewing at Tafe NSW, Hannah shares her experiences and aspirations, including her recent scholarship with Young Henry’s cra brewery. We spoke to Hannah about her insights into the brewing industry, her plans for the future, and her dedication to fostering inclusivity within the brewing community.

Hi Hannah. Can you tell us a bit about where your interest in brewing began?

It started a few years ago when I was living and working in a pub in East London. The craft brewery scene around me was incredible and I couldn’t not fall in love with beer and the beer industry. I have always worked ‘front of house’ but from learning cellar management and the art of pouring the perfect pint, it then peaked my interest on how to make a perfect

pint. I actually never used to like beer and had to wean myself onto it. I did this starting with English ales which is pretty much a warm flat beer, so from there I could drink anything really! But in the last few years my favourite has become sour beers and unusual flavoured beers.

You have been completing your Certificate lll in Brewing course at Tafe, what has that experience been like so far?

Tafe NSW were kind enough to allow me to have a late enrolment, so I have been studying like mad to catch up on the few

weeks that I missed but it’s been great. The staff and teachers have been so helpful, and it is great that I am able to study online and not be confined to a classroom as such. We do a Zoom class once a week and the rest are all online. There are two times that I do have to head down to Sydney for certain physical assessments, but it used to be a lot more. So, they are really trying to make the class more easily accessible for people outside of Sydney. You were recently awarded a scholarship with craft brewery Young Henry’s, what does that scholarship mean for you? What

88 COFFS COAST focus

will you be doing with Young Henry’s to learn the ropes of the brewing world?

It’s what really got me started in this whole journey. I wasn’t aware of the course until I saw Young Henry’s Instagram post and the Woman in Brewing scholarship offer. I have avoided studying because I couldn’t really afford it, so being given that opportunity was a real push. Young Henry’s have been great and so open to helping me in any way they can, even with me currently living in Coffs. Young Henry’s have amazingly offered to fly me down to Sydney and allow me to

What are some things people might not know about the drink manufacturing industry and the processes you use?

I am still very fresh in the brewing side of it, but just how many steps and different factors that go into making the perfect pint. My first assessment was doing a brief description of the 30 steps/factors of brewing beer, and there would still be so many more on top of that. So, appreciate the effort and deliciousness of your next pint!

What do you enjoy most about this industry?

Studying is important but connecting and sharing that passion for beer is what I’m looking forward to the most.

Also

just having that ongoing support will be really important for my studies and potential future opportunities.

have a couple of days of mentoring in the brewery and lab which is just going to be such an amazing opportunity to learn. I also can’t wait to meet the Young Henry’s team and Liz in particular who has just been so warm and welcoming.

What do you hope to get out of your time with Young Henry’s?

I just can’t wait to get down there and learn from the best. Just having that wealth of knowledge on hand and getting that one-onone experience is just going to be amazing. Studying is important but connecting and sharing that passion for beer is what I’m looking forward to the most. Also just having that ongoing support will be really important for my studies and potential future opportunities.

Quality control and taste testing haha! No, I love that almost all breweries are all built off a passion for beer and wanting to share that with others. I also love that it’s constantly evolving and people are creating such experimental and creative brews that it seems the sky is the limit. I also love the sense of community a lot of breweries/ tap houses have. Although there’s a lot of competition, it’s also a lot about supporting your fellow brewers and showcasing everyone’s creations, not just your own.

What are some of your plans or aspirations for your future in brewing?

Very long-term future I would love to own a woman owned/operated brewery and give more women like me an opportunity to get started in the industry that is predominantly male dominated. Short term future, I would love to be working in a brewery that supports me and gives me an opportunity to make weird and wonderful award-winning beers. For now, it’s all just about gaining knowledge and hopefully soon being given an opportunity to learn and grow in the brewing industry.

Thanks Hannah.

Recognising the signs of distress isn’t always easy, but restlessness, withdrawal, mood changes, and expressions of hopelessness are key indicators. If you notice these signs, it’s crucial to start a conversation and offer support.

Life has challenges and can weigh heavily on individuals, exacerbating feelings of isolation and despair. Whether it’s illness, relationship problems, or financial stress, everyone copes differently.

That’s why it’s essential to provide support and understanding to those in need.

Three steps to take if you are worried about someone:

ASK - If you think someone might be suicidal, ask them directly “are you thinking about suicide?”

Don’t be afraid to do this, it shows you care and will actually decrease their risk because it shows someone is willing to talk about it. Make sure you ask directly and unambiguously.

LISTEN AND STAY - If they say ‘yes’, they are suicidal, listen to them and allow them to express how they are feeling. Don’t leave them alone. Stay with them or get someone else reliable to stay with them.

GET HELP - Get them appropriate help. Call Lifeline 13 11 14 or Triple Zero (000) if life is in danger. If you can get in straight away, visit a GP or psychologist. Offer to make the appointment and accompany them if it is their wish. Even if the danger is not immediate they may need longer-term support for the issues that led to them feeling this way. Taking care of your own well-being is also important, so don’t hesitate to seek support. 92 COFFS COAST focus
We live in a beautif ace!

Based on my 20 years of listing and selling real estate on the Coffs Coast, some of the most common questions I’m asked is “ How is the property market actually doing? Are prices going up or down? What do you think property prices will do in the next year?

To answer these important questions, I will focus on the facts and data for the Coffs Market 2450 Postcode as well as the Council Area/LGA over the past 12 months.

All figures presented are sourced from RP Data Core Logic.

Property Prices

Despite 13 interest rate increases and cost of living pressures the Coffs Coast property market has shown tremendous resilience over the past year, supported by steady buyer demand from locals, Sydney siders, regional and interstate buyers who want to enjoy living in this beautiful part of the world. We also have a limited supply of available land given the relatively thin wedge of developable land between the ocean and the mountains combined with rapidly increasing building costs and the shortage of builders and tradies we have experienced locally since Covid. You may be surprised to know that the

median price of a house in the Coffs 2450 postcode has actually decreased by 3% to $733,000 with unit prices increasing by 6% to $561,000 for the year to Feb 29, 2024. Median house prices however have performed quite strongly in the Coffs 2450 postcode over the past 5 years ended Feb, with 6.8% growth in 2020, 16.6% growth in 2021, 35.6% growth in 2022 with a drop of 1.7% in 2023. Back in Feb 2015 the median Coffs house price was $349,000 and units were $254,000.

A pretty good return on investment!

Local Property Market Predictions for 2024

Well I wish I had that proverbial crystal ball!

I’m very optimistic in the strength and resilience of the Coffs Coast property market for many reasons, so on this basis I believe we will have a pretty steady year in real estate. There are plenty of buyers out there and our sales team have been selling well so far this year and I expect the momentum to continue. We have had a number of multiple bidding

ere are plenty of buyers out there and our sales team have been selling well so far this year and I expect the momentum to continue.

wars on properties over recent weeks which has led to increased selling prices, in some cases above the listed price which is great for our sellers and underpins the underlying strength of the local property market.

Last week I attended the annual Stone Real Estate Property Conference and talked with other Stone Real Estate owners and agents throughout NSW, Victoria and Qld who regularly refer buyers to our Coffs Stone office. They all reported relatively robust real estate markets, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne where migration levels have added to the buyer pool allowing many Australians to sell at strong prices and move north.

My advice to buyers is to try and get set in the market this year as I expect there will be solid price increases once interest rate decreases commence and the economy starts growing more strongly.

NOW is a great time to buy, get set and enjoy the ride!
