MWelcome to the MAY 2024 ISSUE of Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS.

ay, the month where winter sports are in full swing, Ironman comes to town and the morning and afternoons start to get that little bit colder. Autumn is well and truly upon us and the iced lattes are swapped for hot coffee while the salads at dinner time are swapped for homey comfort food and whatever we pop into the slow cooker. We are very lucky though living in this area, as we still have amazing sunny warm days and can still go for that walk along the beach, or, for those brave souls a swim. As always I encourage you to get out with family and friends and enjoy all our area has to offer.

In this edition you will find our pubs, clubs and cafes sharing their new menu options and all the exciting things they have on the horizon.

On the cover - Now this month’s cover is for all the dancers in our area... the stunning and ever so graceful Lucinda Dunn. Lucinda is one of Autralia’s all time greatest ballerinas and will be coming to teach right here in Port Macquarie, joining the team at PMPA. Definitely worth giving her interview a read, even if you’re not into dance.

Inside this edition - As mentioned, our dining section has some great options for you to take the family to or meet up with friends with lots of new winter menus dropping as well as hot

LUCINDA DUNN

Lucinda Dunn has had an inspiring and celebrated career as The Australian Ballet’s longest serving Principal Ballerina. She has now thrown her passion for dance into teaching the next generation, taking over the role as Artistic Director at Tanya Pearson Academy in Sydney, and visiting Port Macquarie to work with the young dancers at Port Macquarie Performing Arts on a regular basis; most recently to inspire and coach them while working on their current production of Sleeping Beauty.

Welcome back to Port Macquarie Lucinda. For those readers who haven't followed your celebrated career as The Australian Ballet's longest serving Principal Ballerina, tell us how you first fell in love with dance and the impact that training had on preparing you for such an illustrious career?

I began dancing when I was 4 years old. My Mum was a performer in the West End of London, musical theatre and entertaining on cruise ships. My Dad was a carpenter and stage director and from a young age I loved all forms of dance, jazz, ballet, contemporary, tap etc. I think learning all of these styles of dance and having an all-rounded dance education is very helpful for dancers as they are training to gain diversity and adaptability. I encourage all dancers to try as many styles as they can. I didn’t ever think I would have a ballet career, I wanted to be in musicals.

Tanya Pearson, Mrs P – as she was affectionately known – and I started working together when I was about 13, when two ballet schools merged in Sydney. She saw the potential in me for classical ballet and took me on a tour around Europe, and then to Tokyo

to the Prix de Lausanne in 1989. This is where I was offered a scholarship to the Royal Ballet School, which shaped my path and classical career. The fact that I went on to become the Artistic Director of the Tanya Pearson Academy after my retirement is a circle that is very special.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing though. Whilst in London at the Royal Ballet School, my career was jeopardised by a spinal stress fracture that left my whole upper body immobilised in a plaster cast for three months. I had to be resilient and so rather than get dispirited, I watched classes and kept the parts of my body that I could still use strong. After I recovered, I graduated with an offer from both Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Australian Ballet Company at the age of only seventeen. I took the opportunity to come home and join the Australian Ballet and my career accelerated rapidly. I was promoted to Coryphée in1992, to Soloist in 1993, Senior Artist in 1995, and in 2002 I was promoted to Principal Artist, the highest rank with the company.

You were here last month inspiring local dancers from Port Macquarie Performing Arts on their production of Sleeping Beauty. You've danced the role of Aurora many times in your career, does one particular show stand out?

I was lucky enough to dance the role of Aurora at the age of 18 with The Australian Ballet Company as a young Coryphée dancer, and many times since.

I encourage all dancers to try as many styles as they can. I didn’t ever think I would have a ballet career, I wanted to be in musicals.

There are 2 performances actually that are the most memorable. The World Premiere in Melbourne of Stanton Welch’s new production Sleeping Beauty in 2005, and also a special performance where everything felt right leading the company in Tokyo, Japan.

Port Macquarie Performing Arts created a beautiful production of Sleeping Beauty and it featured a local dancer that I trained at Tanya Pearson Academy, Lucinda Worthing- Shore who is now dancing with the Victorian State Ballet. It was so rewarding to have the chance to see what a beautiful Aurora she has become.

LUCINDA DUNN

Do you have any other career highlights you can share with us? What do you love most about dancing in front of an audience?

I danced for 23 years with The Australian Ballet as the longest serving female Principal dancer, so have many highlights and special moments. I am lucky to have incredible memories both in the studio and stage, along with wonderful partners and coaches. Ballet is a very special art form and performing can be nerve wracking and fulfilling also. I luckily enjoyed the pursuit of technique and daily ballet class so even when I was struggling for motivation I could come back to the barre and find something to work on or work for. I really enjoyed the International touring and the guest artists roles I performed during my career. Receiving an OAM for my Services to Dance in 2014 was such an honour, and of course my retiring performance in 2014 of Manon on stage at the Sydney Opera

House. I also look back fondly on all of the performances I shared with a wonderful dancer and partner, Robert Curran; we shared the stage together for nearly 10 years.

I really enjoyed the International touring and the guest artists roles I performed during my career. Receiving an OAM for my services to dance in 2014 was such an honour.

What was the reception from the students at PMPA like? What do you hope they took away from their time with you?

The PMPA dancers are always receptive, I have enjoyed working with them many times over the last ten years. Principal Stacey Morgan and I have known each other for over 25 years. Stacey’s dancers are eager to gain knowledge, technique and artistry. I had the chance to teach them ballet class, extension lessons oneon-one for dancers of all ages and to rehearse

them for their production of the Sleeping Beauty. As a teacher and classical ballet coach, I always hope that I can be inspirational, engaging and positive for the dancers.

After your retirement from stage in 2014, you’ve been teaching dancers in your role as Artistic Director at Tanya Pearson Academy, what led you to teaching and do you enjoy it as much as you enjoyed performing?

I took the role of Artistic Director, directly succeeding Tanya Pearson, a very prestigious and big position to fill. Teaching is a giving job, I find it incredibly rewarding. I always encourage the dancers to do their best, to feel improvement from week to week and

enjoy their classes. It is important as a teacher that I create a safe environment for my dancers to learn and that they have the chance to enjoy themselves with good friends that they will have for life. Dance is such a rewarding art form and it’s an honour to be passing down my knowledge to the next generation.

What life and ballet lessons do you try to instil in your dancers in order for them to go on to a successful career in dance?

A career in dance takes so much! You need support from your teachers, you need dedication for your technique and your body, you need guidance from mentors to help you improve, along with repetition in the studio and a whole heap of perseverance to reach

your goals. Repetition was what made me less nervous at the end of the day. When it comes down to it, if you are on stage doing a solo in a spotlight, you have to rely on the repetition you’ve done in the studio. Also the obvious tool of strong technique which starts at a young age, artistry and good training. As a professional dancer, being a generous person, open to suggestions and self improvement I believe is also imperative.

You've been in Port Macquarie teaching at Port Macquarie Performing Arts before, first in 2014 for their production of Swan Lake, in 2017 for the official studio opening and now preparing the dancers for Sleeping Beauty, what is it about Port Macquarie that you love so much?

My family and I love the coastal feel, and a slower pace. We love visiting for work and for holiday time as a family. We can’t wait to come back.

And finally, what message do you have for those budding ballerinas who hope to one day follow in your footsteps?

There is no fast track to this profession, take your own path, do not compare yourself to others, be self-motivated, inspired, and don’t wait to be told to practice. If a studio is free, practice by yourself; work out what works and why, and sometimes why things don’t work. Sometimes there isn’t enough time during classes to put in the repetition needed. Listen to your teachers, be humble, try new things, support your peers, find self inspiration and look after yourself and your body, it’s the tool that will help you succeed.

Thanks Lucinda

FRIDAY 7 JUNE 5pm

Chris Dixon has decided to set down roots with his family in Port Macquarie a er years of travelling for his career as an entertainer. Photography has always been a passion of his and he is taking this opportunity to turn his passion into a business, o ering portraits and wedding photography to the community here.

Hi Chris, can you share a bit about your journey into photography and what made you want to make a career out of it?

Along with photography I have another passion which is a career. It’s from this I was introduced to photography. I am a professional singer with a Guest Entertainer Show that travels the world jumping on different cruise ships. The show is titled Dixon’s Rocking Decades. I sing songs from The Beatles to Guns & Roses. It was actually during my training (over 10 years ago) that I bought my first camera and dabbled in professional acting headshots. I love the detail and personalities that photographers can capture in these headshots and so that is where I started. My photography passion however, took a bit of a backseat during the first part of travelling and performing, until the cameras on our phones just seemed to improve daily. I started finding my passion for the craft again, getting into taking photos around the world.

Then I ended up teaming up and working with the international tech company Huawei and using their phones to take photos to promote their products. After a couple of years of phone photography I thought it was about time I took my photography passion seriously. I then decided to buy an up to date camera, I opted to go with the brand Sony and started to hone my photography skills to what they are today. I still travel as a professional singer but I have now set down roots in Port Macquarie with my wife and set up a home-base in this beautiful town. So whilst I’m home from my travels I am focusing on my photography business and career and have already met several beautiful families and shot some stunning family portraits for them. I have also been lucky enough to shoot two stunning weddings. One was at Harry's Lookout, Port Macquarie. The other down in

I still travel as a professional singer but I have now set down roots in Port Macquarie with my wife and set up a home-base in this beautiful town.

How would you describe your style of photography? Do you have any favourite types of shoots to work on?

Detailed; deep; moody; and with a dramatic flair would be a few descriptive words I would use. It’s such a beautiful art form that every photographer can really have their own style to make their work stand out, and it’s a real thrill capturing the layers of people's lives through my style and vibe. I first fell in love with headshots and individual portraits when I had to have my own taken for my entertainment career. From then on, I loved the attention to detail in capturing a person up close. I am however fast falling in love with wedding photography, even though I’m fairly new to that genre.

I love it for a couple of reasons. Wedding days are about love and bringing those you love together. Holding a space for moments like this in life are important and no matter how someone chooses to celebrate love, I feel honoured to capture these authentic moments. Then having that time with just the bride and groom to capture their love together is stunning. Telling their love story through my photos is a real privilege. What have been some standout shoots or projects you’ve worked on so far?

A standout shoot would actually be one from the beginning of learning how to use my new camera. It was during the pandemic

fly that would suit a photoshoot was great. More recently a standout shoot would be when I was asked by Autism Swim, to shoot their annual Dippers at Lighthouse Beach. There were smiles all round, it is a beautiful event and seeing that much joy in one place and capturing it was an absolute pleasure.

What are you capturing when you’re just shooting for your own enjoyment?

I would mainly be capturing my dog, Blue, for enjoyment. Unfortunately the decision was made that he would stay in the UK with his best friend, my Gran, so photography shoots with him do not happen very often. He does love having his photo taken though. Apart from that, anything that takes my eye. Sunrises or sunsets. Now I also have a drone, so increasing my skills with that and taking drone landscape shots is a lot of fun.

I set up the lounge with some lights and made her a cup of tea and asked her to just sit there as I figured out all the different buttons on my new camera. We had a laugh and the final photographs for me are obviously sentimental but beautiful, and hold memories and laughter. Another time would be getting to do product photography for the international tech company Huawei, that was pretty awesome. Getting to use their latest phones and laptops. Also shooting some headshots in the Caribbean during my travels, was a fun task. Just going out with the clients and finding locations on the

putting this in.

Do you have any plans or aspirations for your photography business heading into the future?

What do you enjoy most about photography?

I’ve always enjoyed being creative and it is such a creative passion. Seeing something through the lens is only where it begins. Visualising that shot and how you are going to edit it to bring out its features is such a joy. And when I say edit, I’m talking about the light and shades, the colour pallet, the background, what needs to be emphasised. I’m not talking about the photoshopping and manipulating an image, taking this out, or

I just want to keep building the business and see what it expands into. That’s the beauty with photography, it’s always expanding. The cameras, the lenses, the equipment. There’s so much to learn and every new element adds a whole new layer to your work. I’m incredibly proud of my work and my business and I look forward to the journey it’s already started me on. I am looking forward to capturing more weddings that’s for sure. Where can we check out your work or get in touch?

Focus speaks with Australian actor Conor Leach on the exciting 2024 tour.

Hi Conor. It’s 1999 and Shannon Molloy is a Year 9 student navigating the halls of an all-boys rugby-mad Catholic school, concealing a secret that no one knows. Fourteen is the inspiring true story of a gay teenage boy growing up in a regional Queensland community. Conor, you play the lead character in this production. Tell us a little about the world of Shannon? HI, thank you for having me. So we actually meet Shannon when he's a little bit older, when he's 32 in fact. We meet him on his wedding day. The play commences in New Zealand for his wedding. Of course,

As an actor, it’s been really fun to portray the character of Shannon as his adult self as well as bringing to life the 14-year-old Shannon.

it’s supposed to be this joyous occasion for him, but he can't quite shake the ghosts of his past. So we start there. As the scene is playing out, Shannon has this sense that he needs to go back one more time and delve into his 14-year-old self and his 14-year-old context of his life in order to come to grips with his experiences and make peace with his past. So the play, in essence is about his memories. It's a memory play. As an actor, it’s been really fun to portray the character of Shannon as his adult self as well as bringing to life the 14-year-old Shannon. Through the highs and lows, Shannon's journey is a testament to the courage of the human spirit, fuelled by the unwavering support of friends and family and propped by renowned tunes of the 90's

including S Club 7, the Spice Girls and Shania Twain. How does the soundtrack add to the vibrance of the infectious spirit of Shannon and the rollercoaster of emotions the narrative conveys?

It really is so much fun! There’s so many dance routines, including one really pivotal Shania Twain song that's nothing short of absolutely fabulous. It is hilarious to watch! The show does a really good job of juxtaposing all the nostalgia and the happiness with the horror and the oppression that Shannon went through, and it's very lifelike in that sense.

Because you know, in life, one moment we’re on a massive high and then all of a sudden, things can come crashing down. So it is very lifelike and very stylised intentionally that way.

I think we can cautiously celebrate. I think we can acknowledge how far we have come and we have become better I think as a society. I think the aftershocks of the types of things Shannon experienced is certainly still being felt and grieved, and I hear stories of horrendous homophobia that still exists today. So I do think it is still apparent, which is terrible, and I do worry that celebrating too much is premature. It can make those experiences suffered a bit more insidious if we celebrate and ignore suffering.

I think it’s just about realistically acknowledging how far we have come but to move forward with the acknowledgement that there’s still work to be done.

The play is set in 1999. Considering the overarching themes explored in the script and looking back 25 years from now, do you think we can celebrate how far we have come as a society in this space and do you think there is more work to do?

So, I think it's just about realistically acknowledging how far we have come, but to move forward with the acknowledgement that there's still work to be done.

Fourteen captivates hearts and minds alike, leaving audiences breathless with its raw authenticity. How does the talent of the rest of the cast who bring to life the other characters in Shannon’s life contribute to the production’s success, having the power to warm the hearts and open the minds of an audience?

I'm just constantly in awe of the rest of the cast. They're constantly shape shifting. There

a whole other show backstage as well. We have a ton of quick changes and there’s a lot of sound movement going on too. But the other actors bring to life all of these people who have helped and shaped Shannon’s life. So it's quite astonishing for the audience I imagine, to see people transform like that. The experience has been so much fun!

Finally, what are you most proud of being an integral part of bringing to life another Shake & Stir national tour of Fourteen?

I'm so proud of the bravery of all the artists involved. I'm so proud of Shannon for sharing his story and for trusting his story with us. It's truly been the privilege of my career to do this show. I'm so proud of everything we've achieved and I'm proud of how honest and bold the show is.

And in terms of the run, Port Macquarie is set for the end of May for you guys. We’ll be about a month into the tour when we get to Port Macquarie and yes, we are very excited to bring the production to the Mid North Coast. Thanks Conor. Interview: Sarah Baker

Fourteen will be gracing the Glasshouse on May 31st at 11am and 7.30pm. Tickets at glasshouse.org.au

Those of you that follow @ megandme.com.au’s social pages will know that I have just returned from a lovely escape to Airlie Beach with some special girlfriends.

It was just what we all needed, a little reset and recharge embraced by the warm sun the Whitsunday Region is world famous for.

It’s the first trip like this I’ve been on for a while, you know the sort, where you leave your significant other behind, pack a party dress (and a book!) and prepare for a few nights of total indulgence.

But getting ready for a trip like this got me thinking. After packing for four nights in Queensland, I felt like I could quite easily have travelled to Greece for 3 weeks with what I’d packed… was it because I’d packed way more than I really needed, or was it that I had packed so well that what I’d selected could have serviced a much longer holiday? In my opinion it was the latter. Let me explain.

I enjoy packing for a holiday. I love the challenge of maximising each piece’s potential and making each piece work for its place in my suitcase. For me, major considerations are: Colour Palette; Versatility; Fabric and Care Requirements.

First let’s discuss colour. It’s well known that I tend to lean towards a more muted, neutral colour palette in my everyday wardrobe, and to be honest this really helps when it comes to packing for a holiday. A neutral base allows you to easily create multiple looks with minimal effort. Think basic black, navy or tan. Choose the base that suits you the best and work out from there.

Now let’s consider versatility. In my opinion this is the most important factor of all. How many different ways can you wear each item you allow into your suitcase? If the answer is only one, I would urge you to consider if you really need to take it. An item that can only be worn one way (a fancy evening dress for instance) is taking up valuable packing real estate. On the other hand, a classic dress that can be dressed up for evenings with accessories or paired back for relaxed days out would be a much better choice.

with LUSANNA FROM MEG + ME

from just this one well chosen item, that I didn’t have enough days to wear them all! Rookie error. Note to self… book longer holiday next time!

Mix + Match is key when it comes to my packing strategy. I look at each piece individually and work out how many outfits I can create by mixing and matching each item.

Mix + Match is key when it comes to my packing strategy. I look at each piece individually and work out how many outfits I can create by mixing and matching each item. This is an interesting exercise, and it’s here that I realised I could literally wear my two small packing cubes of clothing for at least 3 weeks, easily.

Consider this: my lightweight long sleeved cotton shirt (for sun protection) could be worn with both pairs of shorts I’d packed, with long pants, over swimmers as a coverup, or even worn casually open or tied over a slip dress (taken from my one more “fancy” evening outfits). I realised I had so many outfit options

My final consideration is garment care. Natural fibres that can be easily laundered and cared for in a hotel room are an obvious choice. Anything that requires specialist care like dry cleaning is a risky choice. This became all too real when I opened up my suitcase on arrival… I had packed a fun little linen playsuit, but missed putting it in my packing cube, so sat it on top. When I opened the case, lo and behold there was a terrible black stain on it. Fortunately I had packed my Tasmanian Tuffy Soap, my lifesaver both at home and on holidays, so a quick hand wash in the sink and the stain was a memory… a dry clean only garment would not have bounced back as easily!

In essence, packing for travel can be a daunting undertaking; but with careful planning, some well chosen items and the ability to give them a quick freshen up in your room, I guarantee there’ll be room in your luggage to bring back all those fab holiday finds! After all, isn’t that half the fun of travel!

Hi George. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started racing cars?

Absolutely. Cars and racing have been in the genes really! My Dad Andrew was a professional racer and was racing all through Australia, NZ, Asia and Europe before he moved to Port Macquarie and purchased the dealership. I personally started a bit late and was already 21 by the time I had my first race. I won the championship the first year and from there it just took off. I’m 38 now and have never really stopped!

You’ve had some impressive results recently, can you tell us about some of the races you have competed in?

We’ve been on a tear this year, for sure! First, I won the Phillip Island Classic in March in one of Dad’s old cars from 1989, the mighty Ford Sierra RS500. Plenty of power and not particularly sophisticated, but a real dream come true as it was so wild to drive and that

era holds a special place in my heart. Next I joined Simon Hodges and Jayden Ojeda for the Bathurst 6 Hour, a race I’ve competed in a few times but never won. We had a great day and everything seemed to go right for us and we won the race outright – there’s something very special about a Bathurst race win, and then the GT4. Unbelievable. To have such a great result, 2 wins from 2 races, was just amazing.

Your GT4 victory at Phillip Island was very impressive. Can you walk us through your experience with the Mustang GT4 from the moment it arrived at Miedecke Motorsport to its on-track debut at Phillip Island?

Thanks, yeah it was very, very late. The Mustang is built in Canada by a company called Multimatic. On its arrival into Australia it was held up in Customs – in the end we had not quite two days with it before it had to be in the transporter and off to the track! It was clear however that Multimatic had done a great job and the build quality was amazing so we were able to turn it around in time.

How did the Mustang GT4 compare to

other cars you've driven in terms of performance and handling?

It sounds crazy but it definitely still feels like a Mustang. There are so many parts and system changes on these cars and you would think a bit of that DNA would get lost, but it’s still very much a Pony car! It does have a lot more downforce from all the wings and plenty of grip from those huge Pirelli tyres so you need to drive it hard. When you do, it is very rewarding and I feel like Rylan and I got up to speed pretty much immediately. The big V8 is a huge part of the character and it’s got plenty of power. It’s very satisfying when you pull out to pass a McLaren or a Porsche in a Mustang!

As a veteran driver, what advice would you give to young drivers like Rylan Gray, who had an impressive debut alongside you at Phillip Island?

Rylan doesn’t need any help on the driving side, he’s naturally fast and did a fantastic job. I think the main thing, and it’s a message that my Dad echoed, is that this championship will be won by the team that finishes all the races,

George Miedecke has car racing in his genes and has had AN EPIC START TO THE 2024 SEASON; WINNING at both the Bathurst 6 Hour and then the GT4 Championship at Phillip Island! 4 WINS FROM 4 STARTS THIS YEAR

minimises mistakes and capitalises when we have a good car. Crashing out of a race looking for another position or taking a risk lapping a slower car can ruin plenty of hard work! We also don’t compete as teammates. I’m happy to learn from him and he’s happy to learn from me, it’s a great dynamic.

It does have a lot more downforce from all the wings and plenty of grip from those huge Pirelli tyres so you need to drive it hard.

Miedecke Motors is celebrating its 40th year as a Ford dealer in 2024, and it’s the 60th anniversary of the Mustang, this must make this victory extra special! What sort of response have you had since the win and how did it feel to do so well with this car?

I can’t believe the response both from the racing community and locally. I’ve been

stopped a few times since being home! It was amazing to score the car’s first win globally during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Mustang, Dad even received a call from Ford’s Global CEO Jim Farley. He was tickled pink and was himself racing a Mustang in England. As a business we’ve come a long way since Dad became a Ford Dealer in 1984 and it all ties in so well.

You also had success at the Bathurst 6 Hour, can you give us a bit of a run down on this event?

Traditionally we’ve always run our own cars at the 6 Hour, but this year we had some

technical issues that just wouldn’t be fixed in time. Simon and Jayden had won last year’s event and had a very solid team so I asked a couple of contacts for his number – and it turns out they were happy to have me! This year’s race was very strategic, and I played a big role in ticking that box for them – basically my job was to start the race, keep my nose clean and tick off as many of the compulsory pit stops as possible. This meant I was always in traffic and coming back through the field, and it was nice to be trusted to complete a pretty highrisk task. This and saving some fresh tyres for Jayden at the end meant we were in a great position for the last hour and to the finish! Any win feels good but there is definitely something special about being able to add the “Bathurst” bit.

Have you got further plans or aspirations for the 2024 season?

Absolutely, we have another 5 rounds of the GT4 Championship to complete. First we go to Tailem Bend in South Australia, Queensland Raceway, back to Phillip Island, then Sydney and finally Bathurst. We aim to win this thing, so there will be plenty of work going on behind the scenes! If anyone from Port Macquarie is at these races, you get special treatment – just come to the garage for a personalised tour of the car.

Thanks George, congratulations!

Gail is

HGail Ellis has had a passion for textiles since childhood, being heavily inspired by her mother who was also an accomplished textile artist. Gail’s work is beautiful and her use of colour and texture really make her pieces stand out.

i Gail. Can you tell us about your introduction to textile art?

My first exposure to textiles/fibre was being taught to knit by my mother when I was very young, about 6 years old. I have been fascinated by fibre and textiles ever since. I continued to knit clothing through my twenties as I was training to be a nurse in Sydney. In my mid twenties I moved to a regional area, the NSW Northern Tablelands, continued nursing but also discovered the wonders of spinning and weaving as there was easy access to raw fleece and it was possible to learn to spin and weave at TAFE in those days. My mother was a great influence and really a mentor to me as she was an accomplished textile artist, had great knowledge and skill with the use of colour and a passion for all things textile. Can you tell us about the types of

techniques you practise and what you like to create?

I have experimented with a variety of techniques over the years and I am always open to learning new skills. My main focus is around colour and texture and how the two can interact. Textile work is tactile. It is hard to go to an exhibition of textile art and not be tempted to FEEL the work! I have a purpose built studio in my backyard which includes an outdoor dyeing station for dyeing yarns and fabrics. I have several weaving looms, my main large loom is an 8 shaft Louët loom which is a floor loom. On this loom I can weave larger items such

My mother was a great influence and really a mentor to me as she was an accomplished textile artist, had great knowledge and skill with the use of colour and a passion for all things textile.

as rugs and wall hangings. I have smaller table looms for smaller projects, such as scarves and small wearable items. I mostly use simple weaving structures as, for me, it is more about the type of fibre/yarn that I use and the interplay of colour. I often use natural fibres, such as hemp, silk, cotton and linen, although lately I have been experimenting with recycled fabric strips and waste materials such as plastic mesh, used newspaper and used or discarded yarns and textiles.

Some of the weaving and spinning you do looks quite complicated, how have you gone about learning these techniques?

36 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

While my work may look complicated to some, the structures I use are quite simple to learn and I am always happy to share my knowledge. I learned the basic techniques from experienced weavers as a member of a local Spinner/Weavers Guild in the NSW Northern Tablelands. Since then I have been fortunate enough to attend summer schools at the renowned Sturt School in Mittagong, where I have been privileged to learn from master weaver Liz Williamson, one of Australia’s “living treasures”. I have also travelled extensively in Europe, participating in textile workshops in Italy and have been inspired by the amazing history of textile manufacture.

Can you talk us through some of your processes from coming up with an idea or design to having finished a piece?

When designing a new work, I often respond to an idea or a colourful image that grabs my attention. I think about how I can transform that into a textile piece and what form that might take. It could be something functional, wearable or decorative or a combination of all three! I sometimes even design as I weave, like creating a landscape. There are traditional conventions in handweaving with regard to calculating the number of threads and the overall amount of yarn needed for a piece. Sometimes this all goes out the window when the focus is more on passion rather than convention!

Where do you often draw inspiration from?

As I mentioned, early inspiration was from my mother and her love of colour. I am inspired by the history of textiles and the stories they tell, there is a lot of history told through textiles. I love to visit exhibitions that feature textiles, eg, the fabulous MunDirra (Maningrida Fish Fence) which has recently been shown in Melbourne at the NGV. Weaving is one of the oldest human crafts and I am proud to be able to carry on and share in this oldest of art/craft forms. In Europe, of course, textile history is everywhere and I am fortunate to be able to travel and experience this.

What are some of your favourite

creations to date, are there any pieces that stand out to you or have special meaning?

A favourite technique is to wind a warp ( the vertical threads on the loom) and then paint it with textile dye before threading it onto the loom and weaving over it using different colour combinations.

It was a fabulous experience to see a creative piece that also made a small contribution to recycling. Weaving is a slow cra and the pleasure is o en as much about the process as the end result.

This results in a unique piece of wearable art. Its a great technique with unlimited possibilities. Another recent favourite piece was a wall hanging that I wove during a workshop, using waste materials. It was a fabulous experience to see a creative piece that also made a small contribution to recycling. Weaving is a slow craft and the pleasure is often as much about the process as the end result.

Do you create these pieces as a hobby or do you do commissions or sell your work?

I create textile pieces for pleasure and I sell on commission, as well as teach weaving to beginners.

Have you been involved in any exhibitions or events locally?

I have exhibited at “Undercover Artists”, Dunbogan (pre-COVID) and I have work in the upcoming “Teeny Tiny “ Exhibition, Wauchope Art Gallery, 30th April, 2024.

Previously, my beginners workshops have been held at The Squeaky Gate Farm Shop, Kew, but my next workshop will be a held in June at a new venue. More information will be available on my Instagram page. Where can we see your work or get in touch? Instagram @textile.haven or you can email me at haventextiles15@gmail.com

COCKTAILS

STOWAWAY BY HELLO SAILOR

ASince its opening in late 2020 the name Hello Sailor has been synonymous with cocktails.

t the time of opening, few venues were focused on inspired cocktails in high volume, with consistent quality. Hello Sailor arrived to fill a gap. The venue’s record sits at 665 cocktails prepared in one evening. For such a small bar this is a huge achievement especially keeping to the high standard required. The engine room ran ‘really” hot that night.

Now, more than three amazing years behind them, Hello Sailor have a large portfolio of cocktail creations via collabs with local business, bespoke drinks for charity functions, specially themed event beverages and consistent evolvement of the menu. Their cocktail tool kits are fully loaded and ready for stepping into a new chapter.

he “Jammy Bastardo”, a cocktail that takes the sweet and savoury route to an extraordinary level. This delightful concoction combines the essence of homemade spiced strawberry jam, the smoothness of 1800 Coconut Tequila, the brightness of orange liqueur, and the zesty kick of fresh lime juice. To elevate the experience, the rim is artfully coated with a house-made coconut salt, adding an unexpected yet harmonious touch. The Jammy Bastardo is a vibrant and refreshing cocktail that instantly grabs attention. The first sip greets you with a burst of luscious strawberry jam, accentuated by warm spices that add complexity without overpowering the drink and its fruity profile. The coconut tequila brings a subtle creaminess and exotic undertones, while the orange liqueur introduces a layer of citrus that complements the strawberry and its natural sweetness.

Port City

Port City Bowling Club are undergoing an exciting new renovation. Can you tell us the plans and what inspired this new round of renovations?

Port City Bowling Club is set for an exciting renovation journey with plans designed to revitalise and enhance the experience for all its members and visitors. Inspired by a desire to modernise the facility while preserving its cherished community spirit, the renovations aim to introduce a blend of contemporary design and improved amenities to ensure the club remains a beloved destination for years to come.

In the past three years, we have been exploring ways to diversify our revenue streams. Last year, we conducted a survey among our members to gather their preferences. The survey revealed a strong desire from members to reinvest in the club itself. Specifically, there was a request for enhancements such as outdoor entertainment areas, function spaces, upgrades to the sports bar, and a new restaurant on the upper level. Observing industry trends, there is a growing

demand for alfresco dining, large-screen entertainment for live sports, and overall club improvements. At Port City Bowling Club, we place a significant emphasis on our food offerings to ensure a diverse range of dining options are available throughout the Club. What changes or upgrades are you making during the renovation?

During our upcoming renovations, we are thrilled to announce a series of changes and upgrades aimed at enhancing the experience for our members and guests. A highlight of our renovation project is the introduction of our new 180 seat restaurant featuring breathtaking views over Oxley Beach with a roof top terrace overlooking the greens and Oxley Oval.

In addition to the new restaurant, the first level will also welcome a new 130 seat function room to cater for corporate events, weddings, and celebrations. We are also undertaking significant renovations to the lower back half of the club. These upgrades include a refresh of the Bowls Lounge, enhancing the atmosphere and comfort for our bowling enthusiasts. The Entertainment Lounge and Gaming Room will

also see improvements, designed to provide a more engaging and enjoyable experience for visitors. Our Non-Thinkers Sports Bar will undergo a full transformation, with a larger space which will create a more vibrant and welcoming home for our sports fans as well as a big screen like no other in Port Macquarie. Drift will also see some exciting changes with a new alfresco dining space which will seamlessly connect the club directly to the bowling green. This area will create an inviting space for members and guests to unwind outdoors. Whether you're in the mood to engage in a casual game of barefoot bowls or simply wish to relax with a refreshing drink and meal, this new area promises to be a perfect spot for relaxation and enjoyment.

Are there any specific design elements or themes you are incorporating into the renovated space?

Absolutely, we will be incorporating our coastal industrial theme into the renovated space downstairs to create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere that resonates with the aesthetic of Drift Restaurant and the Reception Foyer

space. To achieve this, our designers have taken specific design elements from each space and have found modern finishings to enhance the overall ambience and functionality of the space.

We envision this expansion is a way to not only meet, but exceed our customers’ expectations, fostering a more engaging, and memorable dining experience.

Upstairs we have introduced new coastal design elements specifically for our restaurant which includes lifting the ceiling to make the most of our beautiful views of Oxley Beach.

How do you think these renovations will enhance the overall dining experience for your customers?

The new establishment will offer a unique ambience, distinct from the current offering, providing our patrons with the choice of enjoying a laid-back casual dining experience at Drift or a more refined setting of our new Bar and Grill Restaurant. This versatility means that we can cater to different occasions – from casual meet-ups to more formal gatherings –without compromising on the quality of food, service, or atmosphere. The grill's inclusion will introduce our customers to an exciting menu featuring a variety of specialties, enhancing our culinary offerings and ensuring there is something for everyone.

Moreover, the addition aims to elevate the overall customer experience by reducing wait times, offering more seating options, and introducing new flavours. We envision this

expansion is a way to not only meet, but exceed our customers' expectations, fostering a more engaging, and memorable dining experience. Through this renovation, we are committed to reinforcing our dedication to excellence in service, quality, and ambience, ensuring that our members and guests have an enjoyable experience.

How will the renovations affect the current operations of the club? Are there any plans in place to minimise disruptions for members and guests during the renovation period?

Despite the significant renovations, we have put in a lot of effort to minimise disruptions and ensure minimal impact on our members and guests. There will be a number of areas in the club which will remain accessible including Drift, Gaming, The Bowls Lounge and the Main Lounge. Our Non-Thinkers Sports Lounge will be relocated to the entertainment lounge with facilities including TAB and Keno available to our punters.

We will also continue running our weekly activities such as Bingo, Raffles, Members Draw, Trivia, Poker, Live Entertainment, Barefoot Bowls and Weekly Social Bowls.

What are you most excited about regarding the completed renovations?

The completion of our renovations at Port City brings a wave of excitement and anticipation, not just for us but for the community we serve. One of the most thrilling aspects of our renovation is the introduction of new spaces designed to cater to a diverse range of patrons. Each area has been thoughtfully designed, considering the comfort, aesthetics, and overall experience of our guests. These spaces are not just about dining or socialising; they're about creating a place where memories are made, where every visit feels special. Moreover, we are excited about the potential for new events and gatherings that these spaces will accommodate. Whether it's celebratory dinners, casual meet-ups, or special events, our renovated spaces offer the perfect backdrop. The versatility of these areas allows us to host a wide range of activities, ensuring that Port City remains a vibrant, dynamic part of our community. We can't wait to see the joy and satisfaction on the faces of our patrons as they explore and enjoy our new spaces, making Port City their local choice for years to come.

When do you hope to see the renovations complete?

The much-anticipated new Bar and Grill restaurant and Drift Alfresco spaces will be unveiled by late February and early March 2025, offering a perfect setting for guests to enjoy as they arrive to Port for the April school holidays. Our lower-level areas of the Club will be re-introduced as soon as possible.

Thanks David.

You’re the

apple eyes!

TO MY

There is nothing more tempting than the new season’s apples that have hit our little store. With so many varieties available, it’s hard to pick a favourite.

Maybe it’s the sweet Pink Lady with that crisp bite or maybe the Gala with a terrific crunch and stripy skin. Or even, the dark and handsome Red Delicious or the new Love apple that has red flesh.

Yes, we are definitely selling loads of the Missile apples. These miniature apples have the smallest core and super sweet flesh making

them perfect for the school lunch boxes or that snack on the run. They are very hard to resist.

So next time you’re in store look at the beautiful display our staff make daily, they always make it look so apeel-ing!

Se lement City Shopping Centre highlights its commitment to charity initiatives and giving back to its local community through sponsored partnerships. Marketing Manager Megan Philippa speaks with Focus about the centre’s values and obligations in business.

Hi Megan, you have a very important role at Settlement City Port Macquarie looking after the marketing for the centre. Tell us a little about some of your highlights since you have been in the role?

Having joined the Settlement City team in the second half of July 2023, I have really enjoyed getting to know our retailers and regular customers as well as working as part of the centre management team who work hard to ensure the success of all of our retailers and the comfort of our customers.

Our Christmas 2023 season was our most successful yet with a record amount of our locals coming into the centre for their Santa photos. Our customers loved the exciting new Santa set, and turned out in big numbers for our Pet Photos and Sensitive Santa photos. Our charity gift wrapping stand helped to raise funds for The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal.

We have also recently welcomed Travelex currency exchange as well as two new locally owned retailers to our food court, SwadDish Indian takeaway and Burgera who make the most delicious burgers and salads. Additionally, the Cheesecake Shop is now back in Port Macquarie with a brand-new store opening very soon in the centre!

I understand part of Settlement City’s core values focus on an integral commitment to supporting community organisations through funding. How exactly are some of these initiatives achieved and why is this an important attribute to the shopping centre in business?

Settlement City has long been a place in our community for our locals to meet, connect and shop, but also boasts strong relationships with local community organisations through ongoing partnerships and sponsorships.  Under the new ownership of Fawkner

Property, the team at Settlement City have reaffirmed the centre’s values with community engagement becoming the core of our brand. The centre partners with local charitable organisations who work in spaces such as health, homelessness and animal welfare.

Settlement City supports local community groups and charities in their fundraising efforts by providing free space in the centre for awareness campaigns and activities. We regularly work with Port Macquarie Lions Club, Probus, Marine Rescue NSW, the Port Macquarie RSL Sub Branch and John Hunter Children’s Hospital among many others. We also host a free Justice of the Peace service each week, which is run entirely by volunteers Barry and John. For seasonal events like Christmas and Mother’s Day, we partner with local charities to offer charity gift wrapping, an initiative that is always well-supported and appreciated by our customers.

choose to use themselves. They can put this towards their regular shopping or perhaps a treat they have been eyeing off!

initiative?

A recent Easter activation saw the centre donate funds to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. Can you tell us a little about the details of this successful initiative?

When we host events at Settlement City we see them as an opportunity to be able to use our platform to raise awareness or fundraise for a charity or community group. For Easter this year, we had the Easter Bunny come to visit us, and invited Barry Hegginbotham along. Barry is a local volunteer who fundraises tirelessly for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. He came along to our Easter event and collected gold coin donations in return for the Easter activity packs which were a hit with the kids and parents alike!

Mother’s Day forms a busy period in the calendar for the centre and I know you have a schedule of activities lined up. What promotions will be happening instore to encourage shoppers to purchase their gifts for Mum and what community initiatives have also been arranged?

We understand that our customers are seeking value through these tough economic times, so for Mother’s Day this year we are offering a bonus for those who purchase a Settlement City Gift Card. Shoppers who purchase a $50 Settlement City gift card will receive a bonus $10 gift card that they can either re-gift or

Our retailers are of course offering a big range of Mother’s Day gifts, from homewares to fashion, beauty products to pampering services.

This year we will be partnering with The Mother’s Day Classic to offer Mother’s Day gift wrapping services in return for a gold coin donation – you will find them just outside Big W from Tuesday 7 May until Saturday 11 May. The Mother’s Day Classic is a fun run that raises money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation to fund vital breast cancer research and will be held at Westport Park on Sunday 12 May 2024.

The rising cost of living is certainly affecting everyone from the household budget to people running businesses across all industries and sectors. How has Settlement City tried to continually provide a value driven experience for shoppers when they choose to shop and utilise the centre?

Providing value to our customers is always a big priority. We continue to deliver this daily by providing a clean and safe shopping environment with free under-cover parking, free phone charging stations, all-weather Woolworths click and collect facilities, free

wi-fi and an indoor children’s playground. As a centre, we provide value for locals and visitors to the region. Port Macquarie is a great destination during holiday periods; Settlement City provides free or low-cost indoor activities and events for families to ensure all-weather entertainment, shopping and dining experiences which are also great value for money.

What is planned for the remainder of 2024 – can you tell us about what is coming up at the centre?

Looking ahead, we will continue to support our retailers with marketing tools, collaboration and targeted marketing activations, while offering more value to our customers through our commitment to providing quality shopping experiences. We want our community to think of Settlement City as not just a place to shop, but a place to meet, to relax and to connect with others.

In the second half of 2024 we will celebrate Father’s Day, Spring Fashion, and of course, the Festive Season. We will also soon be announcing some exciting new community initiatives. Keep an eye on our Facebook, Instagram and website for updates on what is happening in the centre.

Thanks Megan.

Drawing

THE LINE

“Is Australia’s restaurant industry on the brink?”

Aquestion recently posed by industry stalwart Dani Valent in SMH’s Good Food, with an intro that read - “For many restaurants today, simply breaking even is cause for celebration. Will 2024 be remembered as the year of closures…” It certainly has the capacity to grab your attention if you are in any way connected to the industry.

Of course we knew the party couldn’t go on forever. The post COVID boom time saw an unprecedented boost in trade that the industry had never experienced before and may never see again. For businesses lucky enough to have emerged from the pandemic relatively unscathed, they barely had a moment to dust themselves off before rushing out to greet the incoming dining out starved masses.

Apart from the issue of wondering where one’s labour pool had disappeared to, times were good. A kind of renaissance of bacchanalia had arrived where society pretty much just wanted to let its collective hair down after the years of isolation, check-ins and mask wearing.

Those were the days…. Indeed such times are fleeting and we could see it coming a mile off. Interest rate hikes and inflation to boot.

Enormous price hikes in absolutely everything. Don’t have to even say it – we all know it. Batten down the hatches you might say. Weather the storm and wait it out. Meanwhile a little less dining out, a little less takeaway. A little more introspection over the deepest, darkest areas of the pantry instead.

Meanwhile we keep going. As Alex Pritchard, Head Chef of iconic Icebergs Dining Room in Sydney said, “We’re at a pivotal point where the solo ground breakers just can’t survive anymore and it could ruin what everyone loves about hospitality”.

That thing everyone loves, is precisely the incredible diversity and choice currently inherent in the industry. We love to have a myriad of different dining options; we love to wallow in the uniqueness of a dining scene with concepts ranging from hole in the wall joints to white table cloth wow factors. We love to go back to our old favourites again and again, we pounce excitedly on new hip ‘must try’ pop ups.

That’s what it’s all about – hospitality in its true expression offering a sense of community, with venues adding their own beautiful, individual stamp of potential deliciousness into any given neighbourhood.

Ben Liebmann, who was COO at Copenhagen’s epic Noma restaurant who now lives in Sydney believes “we do ourselves a disservice if we don’t support the restaurants that are part of our identity as Australians. Hospitality adds tens of billions of dollars to the economy and employs thousands of people” he goes on to say.

It’s surely worth our while to fight to keep the diversity and creativity that makes the industry stay afloat. Or else there’s a danger that only the strongest survive and nobody wants their dining choices limited to big chain operators and cookie cutter establishments – do they?

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. Meanwhile, all you can do is keep on making those bookings and turn up to your booking! That really helps!

Appreciate the quality and savour the occasion of a dinner out – more than before. Surely great food tastes even better and the experience even more life affirming when times are a little leaner. Save up to spend – eat at home mostly and make it an occasion to go out! Where there’s a will, there’s a way…. if eating out’s a passion then fight for it.

Because “Hospitality is a bit broken” as the SMH article says, and we need a little help to fix it…

Jarad Mea

Jarad Mea recently went on a trip to Fiji, and decided to bring along some donations for the local villagers. As Jarad has a strong connection to the Wauchope Blues, and rugby is also the national sport of Fiji, he took a whole lot of jerseys and boots that were generously donated by the club.

Hi Jarad, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your connection to the area?

I Live in Wauchope, and run a small sandwich bar/ café called Coffee on High. I really enjoy being part of the community here and I love to support it too.

What is your involvement with the Wauchope Blues?

My son Saffron, now 14, has been playing for Wauchope Blues Juniors for 5 years and Coffee on High has been sponsoring the club for the last 4 years.

You recently went on a trip to Fiji, can you tell us what that trip was all about?

Out of the blue a good mate David Langlands, who has been going to Fiji every year for ever, invited me to join his family to have some headspace away from the business. Every year the Langlands’ go to Fiji they take items that the locals may have a need for being a 3rd world country, and, furthermore Ruby, Dave's daughter, buys dog food for all the flea bitten mangy village dogs.

is travelling off the tourist path and connecting with locals in their community. The gift of something is a traditional way to show respect.

As I love different cultures, the only way to experience them in their true setting is by travelling off the tourist path and connecting with locals in their community.

As I love different cultures, the only way to experience them in their true setting

Can you tell us about some of the donations that were made?

As rugby is the national sport in Fiji, jerseys and footy boots were generously donated by the Wauchope Blues. Paul Walsh (Club President) and Lisa Hoffman (Junior Management) quickly compiled a massive bag of new and pre-loved items when it

was mentioned.

I also gifted a guitar that I had as a youth and guitar strings as the Fijians are very musical, though equipment/strings are expensive and not that accessible to some villages. The lollies and toys that Ruby bought were also a hit with the young children.

What was the reaction from the locals like?

It's so amazing to watch people receive gifts with such gratitude and surprise. We were mobbed wherever we stopped to give out the gifts.

Many of the poor village people only have 1 or 2 sets of clothes and footy boots that they share.

Have you got any other ideas like this in the works or would you do it again?

Nothing is planned yet for the next trip, though if I were to go to Fiji again, I would definitely encourage the Wauchope Blues players to make the trip as well and do a preseason training session with the brothers across the blue.

It felt so surreal being in the traditional house si ing on a traditional woven mat across from the village elders and in front of the village men.

I was honoured to have a traditional kava ceremony with a village. It felt so surreal being in the traditional house sitting on a traditional woven mat across from the village elders and in front of the village men. I really felt not worthy and humbled by the honour.

What difference do you hope these donations will make to the people who received them?

as a 1st world nation. We take for granted the services and possessions we have at our fingertips. By having the experience of sharing with the villagers, I was able in turn to have a look into their world where family and community are above possessionsmaybe from the lack of, but I think definitely better for it. I made me reflect on my life and to weigh up what is most important. Thanks Jarad.

Even though we are not far away from Fiji, we are worlds apart

STEPPING UP FOR BREAST & OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCH

Mother’s Day Classic local organisers are inviting everyone to step up on Mother’s Day, Sunday 12 May to walk or run for research and help make a difference for those diagnosed with these cancers. Celebrating their 10th event in Port Macquarie this year, the Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) is an annual tradition for many in the Greater Port Macquarie area, attracting people from far and wide to participate in the fun run and walk.

The MDC’s goal is to raise awareness of breast and ovarian cancer in local communities and increase money for medical research – to elevate women’s health, prevent deaths from breast

cancer, and improve the survival outcomes for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which is currently just 49%.

This is why the Mother’s Day Classic has decided to go further and expand its reach and impact so participants can run or walk in support of ovarian cancer research, in addition to breast cancer research.

Port Macquarie Event Manager and Volunteer, Kylie Bulmer saw the opportunity to bring this event to the area over 10 years ago, and has been a driving force behind the local event since. Kylie says “I am kind of honoured to say that I have had the privilege of organising the Port Macquarie Mother’s Day Classic event since

2014. I wanted to direct my focus to a new charity venture involving the strength and resilience of women and to create a community event to build awareness, support, hope and inspiration for our generous Port Macquarie community.

“We could all learn a thing or two from these mums, sisters, partners, daughters and good friends. The one way we can improve the future for all involved is to hold and participate in events at a local level such as this one,” Kylie says.

“I’m also excited to see us achieve our event’s 10th anniversary and grateful for our community’s ongoing support,” says Kylie.

54 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus
Twelve women, every day. That’s the number of Australian women who die from breast and ovarian cancer every day in our country.

Fellow Event Manager and Volunteer, Carmen Abi-Saab says “Having been involved with the MDC in varying capacities from 2007 through my previous employment, and since 2017 in Port Macquarie as a volunteer host with the amazing Kylie, I’m so grateful that this year in addition to supporting the NBCF’s breast cancer research projects, we’ll also be raising funds to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

“Just a few days before our 2022 MDC I lost one of my closest and oldest friends to aggressive ovarian cancer. From diagnosis to death, my friend was taken from us in just 10 months. I’m glad I can be given the opportunity to raise awareness in our community and do something to honour my friend,” says Carmen.

The Port Macquarie event is 100% volunteer run and 100% funded by sponsorship from local businesses including loyal and long term local event Major Partner HEM Property, and Silver Partners, Sovereign Hills Port Macquarie, Growers Market and Macquarie Signs Group.

The annual 5km Fun Run and Walk, held on Mother’s Day Sunday 12 May, starts at Westport Park bringing together people of all ages, genders, professions and interests – from the serious runners right through to the casual

walkers, alongside those with prams and little kids. It’s not just those with a connection to breast or ovarian cancer who participate – the event is open to anyone and everyone, male and female, young and old.

Participants are encouraged to wear pink, and even take it a step further, to dress up in fun pink outfits, to help create an impact and raise awareness for research. Participants can choose to fundraise for breast cancer research, ovarian cancer research, or both.

Funds raised through the event are donated

to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s research projects into early detection, better treatment options, and improved outcomes for those diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. Plus, the Port Macquarie event organisers host additional fundraising to support patient wellbeing initiatives at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute at Port Macquarie Base Hospital. Those wishing to get involved should register online at mothersdayclassic.com.au and follow the local event at facebook.com/port.mdc.

BUT FROM RAIN COMES RAINBOWS

To recognise the 10th anniversary event of the Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) in Port Macquarie, ten Local Community Ambassadors – past and new – are sharing their personal stories in the lead up to the event or on event day. Here are Tracy’s, Karen’s and Rheannon’s stories.

KAREN LAMOND

Karen Lamond will be walking with her family at the Mother’s Day Classic this year.

“I’ll be walking to raise funds and awareness for breast and ovarian cancer, a cause very close to my heart,” says Karen.

“In 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 after my GP sent me for my first mammogram and ultrasound. With no obvious symptoms, my diagnosis came as a huge shock and turned my family’s world upside down,” Karen says.

“My children were aged 8 and 6 at the time. Telling them was the hardest thing my husband and I have had to do. Nothing you do can ever prepare you for this conversation.

“After having 8 surgeries in 4 years, my treatment has finally come to an

end. I’m very grateful for events like the Mother’s Day Classic that raise funds for research and also supports our local Mid North Coast Cancer Institute. Without the commitment of these charities to raise awareness and vital funds for research, my long term prognosis would have been very different.”

“I’m now coming up to 5 years cancer free - a milestone that seemed so far away at the start of my health challenges. Being cancer free is something I will never take for granted, I know too many others that haven’t been able to reach this milestone,” reflects Karen.

“I am honoured and proud to be one of the 2024 Mother’s Day Classic Ambassadors. It’s a privilege to be able to share part of my story in the hope that it raises awareness and encourages people to have check-ups.”

TRACY STONE

Tracy Stone has been involved with the MDC in Port Macquarie from the start. Firstly as a participant, then in subsequent years as a volunteer, helping to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and new co-beneficiary the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF), in addition to specially funded initiatives for the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute.

Tracy recently reached her 13th ‘cancerversary’. Tracy says “A cancerversary

is a personal milestone, whether it marks the day the cancer was removed, the end of treatment, or other significant dates along the journey. For me, it’s the day I was told, “You have breast cancer.”

“The thing with breast cancer is, you don’t get to the end of treatment, and your breast cancer journey is over. It’s never over. It’s always there,” continues Tracy.

“Other than the physical side effects left over from surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation,

MOTHER’S DAY OFFER

and early menopause, there are the mental effects as well. I’m constantly thinking that any niggling pain is breast cancer returning and assuming the worst and that this time it’s going to spread to other organs of my body. I second-guess myself; is this all my fault? What did I do wrong to get breast cancer, and have I done everything I can so that I don’t get it again? Summed up in one word… paranoia! “But from rain comes rainbows,” says Tracy.

“Breast cancer has given me so many opportunities I wouldn’t have had. I have been a part of an extensive breast cancer network, Think Tank and have been on committees for remote and rural breast cancer patients to help overcome the difficulties involved with not having proximity to healthcare services. I have dragon boated down the Arno River in Italy and had a Mermaid transformation in Thailand, and now, my breast cancer journey continues as a supporter for other ladies on their journey. I am a part of Port Macquarie Pink Girls, a breast cancer support group that shares their experiences so we don’t feel alone,” Tracy adds.

RHEANNON CHAPMAN

Camden Haven local, Rheannon Chapman will be walking in her first Mother’s Day Classic this year on Sunday 12 May. Rheannon learnt she had breast cancer on Valentines Day in 2023.

“I was in disbelief when I found out I had breast cancer. I remember thinking ‘that’s okay, I’ll just beat it’, and, while I did beat it, I had no idea what it would take to get there.

“Telling our kids was the hardest. We told them in the company of my brother and niece so they had some support as well. They were of course shocked, scared and had many questions. One thing we agreed, was to be honest and always tell them the truth to what was happening and not hide anything. So we made that promise and never hid a thing,” says Rheannon.

“Everyone’s first reaction was to cry. Cancer is a scary word. But, I just told everyone we’re going to stay positive and beat it. I had to

travel to Sydney for my surgery, so being away from home was hard, although I had family and some special friends make the trip down to keep us company.

“Once you go through something like this, it’s a challenge to get back into normal life. You’re not the same person you were before it all started. I’m now finding the new ‘me’ and learning what that looks like. While my treatment and surgeries are all over, the fear of recurrence is real. I had no idea that I had cancer in the first place, so how will I know if I

have it again?” continues Rheannon.

“I am in my 40s. One thing I didn’t know is that you can go to breast screening at the age of 40. I always thought it was 50. So I encourage everyone to attend if they can – even with no symptoms or concerns, detecting it early is vital to the treatment options and outcomes.” Rheannon says “I am so lucky I live in a small town where they wrapped their arms around me, but more importantly, around my family. Everyone made sure our family were never alone and always had a friend close by.”

SOME IMPORTANT BREAST CANCER AND OVARIAN CANCER FACTS

BREAST CANCER

Almost 250 women on the Mid North Coast are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women on the Mid North Coast and the second most common cause of cancer death.

1 in 7 women in NSW will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

More than 75% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are aged over 50.

A family history does increase your risk of breast cancer, but 9 out of 10 women diagnosed had no family history. This is why all women must remain vigilant.

OVARIAN CANCER

Around 20 women on the Mid North Coast are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2024.

It is the 10th most commonly diagnosed cancer in women on the Mid North Coast and the 6th most common cause of cancer death. Ovarian cancer is highly treatable when found early. However more than two-thirds of ovarian cancers diagnosed in NSW have already spread.

The five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer is just 49%. That’s why we need to invest in research and why the Mother’s Day Classic has extended its support to include the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF).

Simple Things, Huge Bene ts

We are in a very privileged era where we have vast and open access to knowledge and basically every ma er can be researched allowing us to encounter the best solutions. It shouldn't be any different with our health.

As we celebrate wellness this month, it’s clear that a radiant, healthy smile is integral to comprehensive self-care. It’s quite astonishing to consider that the human body is an intricate and sophisticated machine with interconnected components that necessitate a holistic approach for proper upkeep. Whether you’re a crossfitter, a Pilates enthusiast, or a committed early morning swimmer, you might simply desire to focus more on your overall health, eat nutritiously, and lead a longer life. Maybe your child is passionate about soccer or mountain biking, or perhaps your mother has begun medical treatments with various medications, and the side effects are uncertain. No matter your age or lifestyle, there are straightforward steps you can take that could transform your life..

MYTHS AND FACTS

- Did you know that chlorine can significantly damage your teeth? So if you’re an avid swimmer, it’s crucial to take preventive measures to protect your teeth while enjoying your daily dip in the pool.

- Sports accidents that result in head concussions and significant injuries are worrisome for children (and all of us)and often include dental trauma. Such injuries can lead to painful, extensive, and expensive dental

treatments, which could be mitigated by the use of a simple and economical mouthguard

- Healthy eating may be damaging your teethyes, juices are healthy especially the ones that will give fresh vitamin C, but the low pH will melt your teeth and erosion will be the result: causing severe damage and sensitivity. Simply use a straw

- Have reflux? Your teeth may be eroding and dentine will be exposed. It may take years to be noticed and the damage is irreversible

- When you are lifting heavy weights your teeth tend to clench and all your body muscles engage in the activity. Sports Dentistry is not well known and you will significantly improve your endurance if speaking to an expert.

- Did you know that a clean mouth is not about how many times a day you brush or floss, but the quality of the brushing/flossing? Unless your dentist explains to you, it may be that you will have enamel abrasion, decay in weird spots until you learn how to prevent it. Easy.

- You find vaping is trendy and cool... but do you know the serious damage it is causing? Dry mouth, decay, bad breath, loss of taste, oral cancer... not to mention your lungs and overall health. Be wise

- Recently diagnosed with osteoporosis? Soon starting bone injections/tablets? Make sure to discuss with your GP prior to it. Dental treatment may be impacted.

- Vitamin D supplement (if you are not a sunshine fan) and appropriate hydration is proven to improve bone healing among other benefits.

- Do you have headaches, troubles with sleeping, or waking up with a very dry mouth? You may be suffering from sleep apnoea and/ or severely grinding your teeth.

Some simple and small changes in your life will bring huge gains.

As a life lover and a passionate dentist I like exploring all aspects that can be integrated in improving life quality overall. I recently became interested in Sports Dentistry which involves a wholeness approach adaptable to all ages and activities. It will be my pleasure to discuss this with you! - Dr Cristiane Ribeiro.

We are enthusiastic to have Dr Scott Davis as the Federal President of the Australian Dental Association.

And, of course, we do dentures, crowns, veneers, implants and complex rehabilitations.

DO YOUR FEET

&TingleBurn?

At our clinic, we encounter many patients who are troubled by Peripheral Neuropathy of the feet - a condition characterised by decreased sensation, tingling, burning, tightness, and pain in the feet and toes, particularly exacerbated by prolonged walking or standing.

While most find the tingling and numbness to be just annoying, it is the pain that significantly impacts their mobility and quality of life.

Generally our foot neuropathy patients are older and many have had or currently have lower back issues. This correlation is not surprising since foot neuropathy becomes more prevalent with age, and lower back problems like arthritis and spine-related issues can contribute to its development. However, there are several other factors that can also lead to foot neuropathy.

What is Peripheral Neuropathy of the Feet?

Foot neuropathy involves damage or irritation to the peripheral nerves of the legs and feet, which are responsible for foot sensation and balance. Consequently, injuries to these nerves can result in abnormal foot sensations, pain and potential balance related issues.

Symptoms

of Foot Neuropathy

The typical symptoms of foot neuropathy that we frequently observe include burning, tingling, and numbness affecting part of, or the entire lower leg, feet, and toes. Some patients

describe feeling as though something is stuck to the bottom of their foot. Sharp or burning pain tends to worsen with extended periods of walking or standing. The intensity and frequency of these symptoms can vary among individuals.

If you are living with foot neuropathy or have been experiencing any of these symptoms please contact us today to learn more about how we can help you!

Hi Max, you have opened your new optometry clinic in a brand new location, tell us all about your new ‘Factory Direct Optical’ outlet and where our readers can find you?

Yes, I have opened my new clinic, ‘Factory Direct Optical-Max Webb Optometry’, in the industrial area at 9 Blackbutt Road, Port Macquarie. This is in association with the local lens manufacturing laboratory, Hastings Optical Supplies and together it has become a hub for all eye care needs.

What are the benefits to customers with you now having a Factory Direct Optical outlet?

UPDATE

with RACHEL LEMAN

FROM MISS MOTIVATOR

Welcome to the May Fitness Update!

In today’s fast-paced world, snacking is an inevitable part of our daily routine. For busy women, whether you’re a working professional, a mother, or enjoying retirement, making smart snacking choices can significantly affect your health and wellbeing.

Let’s discuss the importance of selecting high-protein snacks over sugary alternatives and highlight the best snack options for maintaining energy, supporting fitness goals, and ensuring overall health.

Why High-Sugar Snacks Are a Poor Choice

Snacks high in sugar (think cakes, biscuits) while delicious and tempting, can lead to a rapid increase in blood sugar levels, providing an immediate yet fleeting boost of energy. This is followed by an inevitable crash, which can leave you feeling tired and sluggish. As we know excessive sugar intake is linked to various health issues, including weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, and heart disease.

Protein-rich snacks, on the other hand, provide sustained energy by stabilising blood sugar levels. They are essential for muscle repair and growth, making them particularly beneficial for women who engage in fitness activities. Protein also helps in satiety,

reducing the likelihood of overeating, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight. Furthermore, protein plays a crucial role in balancing hormones, which can fluctuate during various stages of a woman’s life, especially as we age. Maintaining hormonal balance is vital for overall health, mood stability, and physical function.

As women age, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass, a condition known as sarcopenia. This loss can affect our strength, balance, and overall mobility. Incorporating high-protein snacks into our diets can help slow this muscle degradation, preserve muscle tone, and maintain strength as we age. Ensuring adequate protein intake is particularly important for older women to help maintain independence and a high quality of life.

Top High-Protein Snacks for Women

1.Greek Yoghurt: Packed with protein and available in low-fat versions, Greek yoghurt can be a delicious, nutritious snack. Add some nuts or berries for extra flavour and nutrients.

2. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are not only high in protein but also contain healthy fats and fibres that promote heart health and reduce cholesterol. Pack a handful in your handbag for a simple, nutritious snack on the go.

3. Cottage Cheese: Low in fat and high in protein, cottage cheese can be paired with

fruits or honey for a sweet treat or used in savoury dishes.

4. Protein Bars: When choosing a protein bar, look for options that are low in sugar and high in natural ingredients. They can be a convenient on-the-go snack that keeps you fueled during busy days.

5. Boiled Eggs: Easy to prepare in advance and rich in protein, eggs are a great snack that can keep you full and satisfied between meals.

Choosing the right snacks is crucial for women who value their health and fitness. By opting for snacks rich in protein and low in sugar, you ensure that your body receives the necessary nutrients to stay energised, support muscle function, and maintain a healthy weight. Protein’s role in balancing hormones and preserving muscle mass is especially beneficial as we navigate different life stages. So next time you reach for a snack, remember that what you choose not only affects your immediate hunger but also your overall health goals.

Stay strong and snack smart!

Dental Health

IS A TEAM EFFORT

Since 2006, Dr Peter Elfar and the caring team at Sundial Dental have been providing general dentistry to families in the Hastings and Manning, using the latest technology to push the boundaries of modern dentistry and change the way patients experience dentistry.

While Dr Elfar’s list of achievements is long, one of his greatest accomplishments has been assembling a like-minded team working closely together to provide oral health services across four communities while upholding patient care to the highest standard.

We interview Dr Peter Elfar to find out more about his unique approach to dentistry.

What inspired you to be the principal dentist of a multi-practitioner dental practice?

Initially when I purchased the practice from Dr Vispi Davar, there were two locations and multiple practitioners and so it was in the DNA of the practice from the beginning.

By developing the practice and adding services and technologies, such as hygiene appointments, 3D Xray technology, CEREC, Invisalign and LANAP, patient satisfaction improved and so did the job satisfaction of the dentists. Happy patients = happy dentists.

The use of the advanced diagnostic technology such as 3D Xrays allowed us to diagnose and design better dental solutions. Using state of the art technology to improve patient experience and outcomes allowed us to attract some of the brightest minds in the industry.

How did you come to be a dental mentor?

In 2009, we hired our first new graduate dentist, Dr Simon Deall. Truthfully, I had no intention of hiring a new graduate but his resume seemed

to be everywhere, at the office, at my home and eventually I took it as an omen and reached out and rang him.

My time working with Dr Simon provided me with a great introduction to mentoring. Over the next three years we spent time together (or across the hall from each other) refining the skills he learned in dental school and I discovered that teaching something you know is a really good way of learning things on a deeper level.

Since then how have you developed into the multi disciplinary practice with four locations? To be honest the growth was organic. Like-minded clinicians were attracted to working with our team and that seemed to be a self-fulfilling loop.

We started out with practices in Port Macquarie and Wauchope. It was by accident that we started our third practice in Taree and in the same month Dr Huxley Pohlman approached us about his retirement from his practice in Laurieton. We went from two to four practices in just a few months.

It was a stressful year, but we emerged with a dynamic team of dentists working across four successful practices. Now we couldn’t even imagine working without a weekly trip to the Taree and Laurieton communities to catch up with our patients and our team.

Also working as a team means we can all study and practice our areas of special interest. We have a dynamic team and I have a passion for dental implants, LANAP and advanced restorative cases that require the use of multi-disciplinary techniques.

What would you consider the most important aspects of creating a dental team? Shared values are the basis of a great team and a

strong work ethic, along with a growth mindset. Dentistry has changed a lot and stagnation is not an option. We must all keep learning, developing and training with new treatments and technology to provide the best results. After 17 years we have developed a team that considers embracing new technology and working across our four locations part of our culture. We all enjoy being a part of these communities that we work in and have built long term relationships with our patients. Each community is unique and each patient brings to the practice their own different experiences and needs. What would you say to anyone who is considering a career in dentistry? Dentistry is a beautiful mix of being artistic (you have to be good with your hands), medical, (because providing quality health care is key), and practical (because everything you make needs to be functional). Most of all you need to be able to communicate and enjoy working with people. As a dentist, you have the benefit of feeling you are doing something useful, changing people’s smiles and self-confidence and creating long lasting relationships.

If you are genuine and enjoy your job, patients pick up on this and it improves both the patient experience and your job satisfaction. It’s a great career choice if you are passionate about patient care and want to give back to your community.

Thank you Dr Peter Elfar. If we wanted to learn more about the team at Sundial Dental where would we turn to?

The website is a good place to start, but why not consider stopping by our Port Macquarie or Wauchope practices to say hello, or ring us on 6583 3533 or 6585 2015

NOW OPEN AT LAKE CATHIE MEDICAL CENTRE

Most Australian women will experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, however symptoms of menopause can start up to 10 years prior to that transition (perimenopause). Once hormone levels start to become more erratic or decline, women may experience a range of symptoms including changes in mood, sleep, sexual and urinary dysfunction, cognition (such as brain fog), muscle and joint pain, and feeling uncomfortably hot throughout day and night.

Three key hormones play a role in these symptoms. Oestrogen is a potent anti-inflammatory and lubricant for the vagina and joints; it also plays a role in temperature regulation and brain health and impacts mood and sleep.

Natural progesterone is transformed into a calming agent in the brain and can help with sleep and mood (unlike the synthetic progestogens in the oral contraceptive pill which don’t have this effect). It will also keep your uterine lining healthy. Testosterone, long thought of as the ‘male hormone’, is vital for women in building muscle mass, cognitive functioning, energy and sexual desire.

We have started a dedicated Menopause and Wellbeing service to help women find answers and effective treatments for this time in their lives. We welcome all women with suspected menopausal symptoms, whether in post or perimenopausal or women with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency.

We also treat Premenstrual DysphoricDisorder. For women who are unable to take hormonal therapy, we can discuss different options available to provide them with relief from their menopausal symptoms.

Winner in the Photographer category at the 2024 Small Business Champion Awards.

Firstly Lucy, congratulations on your recent win at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards. For those who aren’t familiar with the awards can you tell us a bit about them and what they are for?

Thank you. The Australian Small Business Awards started in 1999 and celebrates small businesses on a national level. Held annually, this years awards ceremony was a huge event at The Star in Sydney, hosted by Jayne Azzopardi.

What does this award mean to you personally and professionally?

To be recognised at a national level is enormous, to be honest I’m lost for words. Making the list of finalists was a huge achievement, my children framed the finalist certificate when it arrived - I love how proud of me they are.

When I learned the awards were to be held at The Star in Sydney I was most excited for a dressed up night out, it doesn’t happen often! To be chosen as the winner of the Photography category with such incredible businesses as fellow finalists just floored me. I didn’t stop shaking for an hour afterwards.

I love photography, and the whole ‘business’ side of things came along with that so I’ve had to learn a lot along the way. This award means I’m doing what I love well, and that’s a huge pat on the back.

Can you tell us about the entry process and how the awards night unfolded?

The entry process was a great way for me to reflect on what I’ve achieved, answering an in-depth series of questions around my business and processes which were then assessed by a panel of judges.

The night itself was a huge red carpet event at The Star in Sydney with over 1000 attendees, considered the “Oscars of Small Business”. We enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal and networked with other businesses. I was lucky to have my business coach, Stacey Morgan, along with my husband, Lee, joining me to enjoy the night.

When I was announced as the winner in the photography category (and picked my jaw up off the floor) I made a brief speech on stage before photos and a few glasses of bubbly! What was it about photography that you fell in love with and what keeps you picking up the camera everyday?

I love how a photograph can catch a single moment in time and hold it there. For families, looking back on photos brings so much joy, whether it’s photos from a family session, wedding or newborn, the details are captured and the memories held. Making the experience relaxed and fun brings me so much joy, and resonates in the feedback I receive. It’s so important to update our family photos and document the ever changing stages in our lives and making updating photos fun, affordable and relaxed for my clients is wonderful.

For businesses I enjoying helping show off what they do! It’s awesome to spend an hour with a business and provide a stunning gallery which reflects what they do so that they can show the world how amazing they are. Are there any other photographers or artists who have influenced your work? There are influences around constantly with social media, and I enjoy being around other photographers and videographers and learning from them. I attended a photography workshop last year and will

again later this year, it’s really important to me to keep learning and pushing myself so I can provide the absolute best for my clients.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their journey in photography?

To be trusted to tell someone’s story is huge, it’s not about the equipment you have - it’s about how you tell that story. Every day you’ll learn something new, and to be able to do something you love and share it with the world is incredible, and you don’t need a narrow ‘genre’. I was told so much that I should ‘niche down’ but I haven’t because I enjoy the variety.

How do you balance artistic expression with commercial demands in your photography business?

Whatever I’m shooting it’s done with my twist. Whether it’s a trip to the recycling facility or a wedding day, I’m constantly looking for ways to tell a story through the lens and create something special. I’m always grateful to be given the opportunity to work with someone whether it’s a family or business, and put my all into every shoot.

Finally, where to next, what do you have on the horizon for the business and yourself?

The remainder of 2024 is looking very exciting with weddings, businesses, families and daycare centres already booked in. I’m excited to continue to work with my amazing clients and meet new ones too!

I am thrilled to be a finalist in the 2024 Coastline Credit Union Business Port Macquarie Awards which will be held on May 18th.

Thanks Lucy.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY TIES FROM WITHIN

Ayear ago, we made a commitment to not only serve our community but to actively give back, share our successes, and champion sustainability.

Since that time, we made the decision to bring all our operations closer together, relocating our Renovation & Recycling Warehouse and Return & Earn to 38 Jindalee Road. This move wasn’t just about convenience for us and our customers; it was about being more accessible and providing more opportunities for our team.

But our dedication to community and team goes far beyond our physical location. We’ve been honoured to partner with groups like the Port Macquarie National Seniors Group and educational institutions like Hastings Secondary College and St Columba Anglican School.

We’ve been honoured to partner with groups like the Port Macquarie National Seniors Group and educational institutions like Hastings Secondary College and St Columba Anglican School.

Education has been a cornerstone of our outreach efforts. From school tours to assembly presentations, we’ve been proactive in spreading awareness about living with disability and environmental responsibility. Our recent visit to a local day care centre to discuss recycling underscores our commitment to instilling these values from an early age.

Investing in our infrastructure has also been a priority. Keep your eye out for our

brand-new truck with a custom tailgate lifter, another testament to our commitment to safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship. Moreover, we’ve been active participants in community networking events and discussions about sustainability. We believe that by joining forces with like-minded individuals and organisations, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

At the heart of everything we do are our people – the dedicated individuals who are Willing & Able. Their passion, drive, and commitment to our community are what moves us forward each day, and with the unwavering support of our community behind us, we know that together we can make a difference.

AUSTRALIA DOESN’T END AT THE EDGE OF THE CITIES

Every month I hold community and industry forums and mobile offices aimed at hearing from the people of the Mid North Coast directly. Cost-of-living issues have continued to escalate this year and remain the number one issue. Under the current Labor Government we have seen electricity prices increase by over 20%, gas by 27% as well as significant increases in the costs of groceries and fuel. I’ve heard from so many small business owners, arguably the backbone of our local economy, who are running a fine line between absorbing rising costs and finding a way to pass them on without negatively impacting on sales. If that balance can’t be met, they need to close their doors, and we’ve seen some forced to do just that.

We hear continued Government claims that Australians have never been better off. I don’t think that statement passes the pub test, particularly not in the regions. In regional Australia we face a myriad of daily challenges that people living in the major cities do not.

a 90 day review (which took almost 200 days) the Minister for Regional Infrastructure ripped away $20 billion dollars of projects already approved under the Nationals and Liberals Coalition Government. Funding such as the $4 million that was assigned to scoping and planning solutions to the Wrights Rd and Lake Rd intersections on the Oxley Hwy to ease the significant bottlenecks around Port Macquarie Base Hospital being a prime example. Or Stage 2 of the Southern Cross University Health Campus in Coffs Harbour that would not only have trained students in the services we so desperately need but eased the pressure on our current over stretched health resources. I know this is devastating for many and I have been bringing these key projects to the Government’s attention each sitting to keep them front of mind.

Australia we face a myriad of daily challenges that people living in the major cities do not. Such challenges as access to GPs, particularly ones that bulk bill. To address this, we need to be attracting more GPs to the regions, but recent policy changes have actually encouraged doctors away from the regions to peri-urban settings. Further compounding the issue is our lack of access to childcare, meaning working parents who are willing to fill our workforce shortages cannot find care for the children. Of additional concern was the decision to slash the number of available Medicare funded mental health sessions from 20 down to 10, despite continued calls from MPs, patients and professionals alike.

This month, we will hear from the Labor Government on their plans for costof-living relief, infrastructure funding, telecommunications and health spending with the release of the new Budget on May 13. I hope that after two years this Government begins to treat us as equal to our city counterparts.

REGIONAL SERVICE LEADER CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE,

Unlocking

Your Child’s Full Potential:

In the Catholic schools in the Hastings region, we believe every child is unique and possesses innate potential waiting to be nurtured and celebrated. The journey of education is not merely academic; it is a holistic path that encompasses spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and social development. With over fifty years of research highlighting the significant role parents/guardians play in their children’s success, our approach in Catholic schools is to foster a partnership with families, ensuring a harmonious environment for every child to thrive.

Whether your child attends a Catholic school or not, here’s how parents/guardians can be instrumental in their child’s growth based on the five decades of research:

1. Establish Routines: Implementing a consistent routine, including study time, joint reading sessions, and a regular sleep schedule, provides children with the stability needed for successful learning and personal discipline.

2. Stay Informed and Involved: Being present and engaged in your child’s educational lifethrough attending school events and maintaining communication with teachers - demonstrates to your child that their education is valuable and worthy of attention.

3. Foster a Growth Mindset: By fostering a growth mindset can help children view challenges as opportunities for development, thus instilling resilience and a zeal for learning.

4. Encourage Reading and Learning at

e

Power of Home and School Harmony!

Home: The home should be a continuation of the learning environment, encouraging reading and integrating educational activities into everyday life.

5. Provide a Supportive Home Environment: A conducive space for studying at home, paired with support and encouragement, allows children to develop autonomy and take responsibility for their learning journey.

6. Support Your Child’s Spiritual Development: Integral to our ethos, encouraging conversations about faith and spirituality at home complements the supportive environment of Catholic schools, nurturing a deep-rooted sense of community and belonging. These principles do not just prepare children for academic success but also for life, reinforcing the Catholic education foundation of community, empathy, and lifelong learning.

Practical Tips for Holistic Development:

1. Communication is Key: Open and regular communication fosters a strong family bond and ensures that children feel heard and understood, which is essential for their confidence and selfesteem.

2. Encourage Curiosity: Encourage your children to ask questions about the world around them and explore various interests. This broadens their horizons and fosters a love for learning.

3. Model Values: Parents/guardians are the first role models a child has. Displaying values such as kindness, honesty, and perseverance teaches children these traits first-hand.

4. Health and Wellbeing: Physical activity and proper nutrition are crucial for a child’s development. Encouraging sports, outdoor activities, and healthy eating habits will benefit their learning capabilities.

5. Digital Literacy: With the increasing relevance of technology, guiding children on responsible and productive use of digital tools is essential for their education and safety online. It is crucial for parents/guardians to be involved in their child’s education, not only through school activities but also in the everyday moments that occur at home. Engaging in educational games, discussing historical events or scientific phenomena, and linking them to the curriculum can make learning enjoyable and relevant.

Our approach aims to balance academic rigour with the teachings of the Catholic faith. We strive to create learners who are not only academically accomplished but also spiritually attuned, socially conscious, and morally grounded.

By integrating these practices into their daily routines, families of all faiths can set their children on a path of good habits that extend into secondary and tertiary education, and beyond.

These efforts by parents/guardians support can amplify the robust foundation of emphasising the values of community, empathy, and a lifelong passion for learning. Together, as one educational family, we can witness the unfolding of our children’s potential, with each milestone being met with communal celebration and personal pride.

AVOIDING NIGHTMARE SCENARIOS

Avoiding nightmare scenarios. We often hear people say “It is important to draft your will carefully to avoid a claim by a child who is no longer in touch or another relative who may have upset you”, and, that is true.

I am often asked why a client cannot leave their estate to whom, and in what amounts, they want to. It is increasingly the case that we see clients who have a melded family situation with some ”good” kids and some “difficult” kids. Planning how to divide an estate so it is fair to the children who have been there for you through the hard times is not always easy.

However, deciding who to appoint as an executor is also important.

all children but when all the children are appointed and there are three or more children in various parts of the country, significant issues can arise, especially if they don’t get on.

Many people understandably want to be fair to all children but when all the children are appointed and there are three or more children in various parts of the country...

Executors are the people who will administer the estate and carry out your wishes. Many people understandably want to be fair to

In my experience, there have been a number of cases where children, appointed together as executors, have not agreed about the sale of property; have meddled in accounts and spent money they had no entitlement to; or the executor has rented out a property to a tenant who later cannot be removed easily. In one case, there was an argument about where the ashes were to be placed, and another matter where the failure of the executors to get on led to a need to appoint an independent firm of lawyers to act as Administrators of the estate which increased the costs astronomically. Sometimes each executor/ beneficiary must be separately represented. Again, another unnecessary expense. In other cases, a failure by one of the

executors to sign documents or delay sending documents required for probate or to call in an asset because they want to cause distress to other family members can also increase the costs and disrupt the progress of an estate. Then there are the cases where there is an argument about personal possessions which could have been easily rectified if the will maker had nominated to whom they wanted specific items to go to in a separate list.

Testators sometimes want to exclude certain family members that would normally be the object of their testamentary intentions – such as adult children. In this instance, a written statement setting out the reasons for not including the family member can be helpful. Claims against an estate by an “eligible person” not only result in a proportion of the estate being paid to the claimant but the estate may also be responsible for their legal costs as well as the estate costs.

So, it pays to carefully consider the personalities involved and to take careful advice. At Priest Legal we have a wealth of knowledge and experience in managing the things that have gone wrong but which could have been avoided by more carefully considering how your will is constructed, who is appointed and how to avoid claims.

YYour guide to upsizing or downsizing your home.

Do you feel as though you have outgrown your current home? Or maybe the kids have flown the coop and you’re thinking it’s time to downsize?

Whatever the reason, if your needs have changed and you are looking to take that next step in your property journey there are a number of considerations to be made.

Firstly, let’s take a look at the potential costs associated with buying and selling

• Agents fees to sell your existing home

• Stamp duty on your new property

• Conveyancing

• Building and pest inspection

• Government registration charges

• Discharge fees if you are selling your existing property

• Loan set up costs for your new mortgage

• Building insurance

• Removalist

• Rent if you have not found a property by the time you sell

• Deposit for your new home

Your mortgage broker will be able to estimate the costs associated with your individual situation. By understanding all of the costs you will be in a position to make an informed decision and ensure that you are not leaving yourself short.

Ways downsizing may impact your financial situation

If you are buying a home of lesser value then your existing home it may be that your mortgage is reduced significantly or in some instances, completely. Lower mortgage repayments result in an increase in cashflow and the ability to save. Usually, smaller homes also mean reduced living costs such as reduced electricity, water and even maintenance of the home. If you are downsizing to a unit or villa there could potentially be an addition of strata costs to consider.

Ways upsizing may impact your financial situation

If you feel as though you have outgrown your current home, you may want to upsize. By upsizing you may need a bigger mortgage resulting in additional loan repayments and a reduction to your cash flow. Upsizing could mean increases to your living expenses and could even mean larger council rates depending on where you move to.

So, you may be wondering if you need to sell your home before buying again?

I get asked this question regularly and there is never a one size fits all answer. There are a number of ways you can purchase your next property and whilst selling first is one of the options, it may not be the only one available to you. You may be in a position to switch your existing home to an investment property. Your ability to do this will depend on if you have enough cash for a deposit or equity in your existing property to support the purchase

of your next home. Your borrowing capacity will also be a determining factor. There could also be tax impacts for you so it’s important to speak with your accountant if you are unsure. You have heard about bridging finance but what is it?

Bridging finance is a short-term loan that finances the purchase of a new property whilst your existing property is being sold. Your eligibility will be determined by your equity position and in some cases, not all, borrowing capacity. Some bridging loans require no repayments at all or repayments on your end debt position only. Whilst bridging finance can sound appealing it can also be quite costly, so it is important to speak with your mortgage broker about the fees involved so that you can make an informed decision.

Things happen in life and our needs change depending on events and our life stage. Change can be scary but buying your home doesn’t have to be. This is why it is so important to have professionals in your corner who understand the process inside and out. Knowledge is power so having all the facts and a plan tailored to your individual needs can help to alleviate the stresses associated with taking that next step in your property journey.

Illuminate

with KATE WOOD-FOYE

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.

You have chartered a career in regulated utilities and distributed remote infrastructure in various parts of Australia, what inspired you to take the leap into energy and into the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2016? Where did it all begin?

The Essential Energy Board of the day elected to appoint a Chief Executive Officer who was from outside of the energy sector. I had extensive experience in rail infrastructure, gas transmission and distribution, ports and logistics, with my experience in distributed remote infrastructure and regulated environments being highly relevant to Essential Energy. I embraced the opportunity to join Essential Energy because, firstly, I could see the extraordinary economic prospects of regional, rural and remote NSW, and secondly, there was extraordinary change and transition underway in the energy sector. The opportunity to be a part of that was very appealing.

John Cleland

As you sat in the CEO chair at Essential Energy on your very first day - what was your vision for the team and a business that would experience significant transformation and sector volatility?

My vision was for Essential Energy to become an organisation that could successfully embrace and negotiate a vastly different, and at that point, extraordinarily uncertain future, while also being customer focussed and commercial. The challenge was to ensure that the Essential Energy team were empowered to fully examine, and if you like, test out diverse options possible within that uncertain future.

How did you feel your experience could make a difference?

I felt my experience could make a difference because I brought insights from a range of industries and geographic areas. I had dealt with the Economic Regulation Authority in WA, the Queensland Competition Authority, and the Australian Energy Regulator, so I was able to bring perspectives to economic regulation. The same applied operationally where I was able to bring insights and

John Cleland leads one of the largest teams in regional, rural and remote Australia. As CEO of Essential Energy, he heads up a high performing and connected workforce of 3,600 to distribute 95% of the electricity to NSW and parts of Southern Queensland. He continues to harness his breadth of experience from a diverse range of industries to challenge the status quo and provide an exciting vision for energy transition and economic opportunity for regional Australia.

experience from different industries with the potential for improvements in operational performance and safety within Essential Energy. A key requirement of any incoming Chief Executive Officer is to challenge the status quo and bring alternate perspectives. Your vision and determination have led the team and organisation to new heights. What is the most exciting opportunity you can see in Essential Energy’s future?

The most exciting opportunity in Essential Energy’s future, after the opportunity for the team to continue to grow and prosper as a group of people, is to facilitate further proliferation of consumer energy resources (rooftop solar, batteries, home energy management and electric vehicles) and utility scale generation of renewable energy across the Essential Energy network footprint. There are significant potential benefits for regional communities, particularly linked to the local generation of carbon free renewable energy. What will this mean for the regional, remote and rural communities you are so passionate about?

84 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

It would mean the opportunity to have much higher levels of regional and local clean energy generation and management, with the potential to attract new industries and businesses to regional, rural and remote communities. It will also provide greater resilience against the climate and market uncertainties that impact on all energy systems currently.

You lead a network and team of highly skilled, dedicated and connected staff across disparate locations to deliver on the Essential Energy vision and mission –how important is this team to the success of the organisation?

Essential Energy is extraordinarily fortunate to have highly skilled, multi-talented, regionally based employees who are both experts in the industry in which they operate, and passionate about their own local communities. This level of community focus and expertise ensures that Essential Energy is served well to respond to climate and other crises that impact the network and the supply of electricity from time to time, to embrace the changes underway in the industry and to enable the opportunities available to regional, rural and remote NSW.

What has been your greatest achievement during your time at the helm of Essential Energy?

Having Essential Energy evolve into a digitally enabled, future-facing business that is constantly embracing new technologies and better ways to service the communities across the network footprint.

e greatest achievement is having Essential Energy evolve into a digitally enabled, futurefacing business that is constantly embracing new technologies and be er ways to service the communities.

Conversely, what was your greatest challenge?

The greatest challenge is identifying and managing the operational and safety risks that exist across an electricity distribution network spread across 737,000 square kilometres.

Diversity and inclusion is at the core of your leadership and organisation. How important has it been to bring this to life at Essential Energy and what benefits has it delivered to your company culture and output?

Diverse teams and organisations consistently outperform less diverse organisations, across industries and geographies. The energy sector faces an inevitable human resources and skills shortage as global economies decarbonise and electrify, and Essential Energy must recruit from the entire population to attract and

retain the skills required. How instrumental have sages and critics been in your evolution as a leader? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you?

Sages and critics always provide important feedback and input to decision making and the setting and delivery of strategy in an organisation. Alternate or opposing perspectives regularly help identify the key elements of difficult or challenging strategic and operational decisions.

What is the most important piece of advice you would give an aspiring leader starting out on their leadership journey?

To surround themselves with highly capable and fully empowered people and to maintain an extraordinarily open mind to innovation and industry disruption. Changes in the energy sector over the last 15 years, particularly the proliferation of rooftop solar, have demonstrated that change can, and often does, occur at a pace and in ways that are impossible to predict in advance.

Thanks John.

Phil Constable is an avid collector, whose pride and joy is his Chevrolet 1928 Roadster Ute, which has been in his family since 1947, and he has lovingly restored it after it ended up in pieces in a shed for many years.

Hi Phil. You are an avid collector of antiques and collectables and restorer of old cars, where do you think this interest in old and historical items started?

For me it was when I was about 16. My cousin had a 1942 Indian motorbike and so it started off from there. I just became interested in old stuff. Years ago when we were in Canberra, we bought the old FJ that I got back in 1982 and I started collecting memorabilia around the 1956 FJ Holden.

You obviously love old cars along with lots of other collectables. Your collection is quite eclectic, can you tell us a bit about some of the items in your collection?

I’ve got four sheds full of collectables! We’ve got about 1500 cans of Coca Cola and bottles that go back to 1942. I’ve got a Vegemite collection going back to 1942 in the white glass. I’ve got BP Smurfs, which you got from the old BP service stations back in the 60s and early 70s. I’ve got about 1500 or more Matchbox cars. I’ve got pedal cars, kids push bikes, three wheel push bikes and two wheel push bikes. Ice cream tins, beer cans.

I’ve got old coins I like to show the kids on Australia Day, like the old threepence, sixpence and the penny… You name it, the list goes on. Possibly your most prized possession is your Chevrolet 1928 Roadster Ute. Can you share what your journey with this car has been like?

This car is very, very rare now, because a lot of them have been wrecked on farms and no one would be as mad as me to try to put it back together again!.

Well, it took me 20 years to restore, a lot of time and a lot of money. It was my uncle’s car. He had it in 1947, he’d bought it second hand, and he drove it, he was a farmer, and it died in 1957. In 1972 it went to Sydney to my other uncle down there. They both passed away and it was left to the oldest daughter here in Port Macquarie. So it came back here

in ‘93 and sat in a shed for 17 years. I bought it in bits and pieces in 2002 and I finished it in 2022. When people saw it in that state they thought I was mad trying to restore it! I just kept at it and went all over Australia, looking for parts for it because what happens with all the old cars like that is that the Hot Rod people throw away the stock standard stuff and they put V8’s and different gearboxes in them and don’t keep the stock standard stuff so it becomes very, very hard to find. This car is very, very rare now, because a lot of them have been wrecked on farms and no one would be as mad as me to try to put it back together again!

86 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

So have you restored it back with all the original parts?

The only thing that is not original is the blinkers, we had to put them on for road registration. Everything else is stock standard. It’s only a three speed box and you do about 47 to 50 kms on a good day. And when it rains you’ve got hand windscreen wipers and the water comes in everywhere. Everything is all wood, we had to bend all the wood to rebuild some parts which took hours, years actually. A lot of blood, sweat and tears.

It’s obviously a very sentimental restoration for you given the history of the car, who helped you along the way?

I had a couple of good mates that helped me build the motor and a good mate of mine sprayed it; he was a New Zealand Lead Wiper/ Panelbeater. He sprayed this car when he was 75 and he just passed away at Christmas time. He was 80 years old.

The car is a family heirloom really. My uncle who used to own it has four kids and they all have been for a ride in it now. They all came down to Port Macquarie last year for Christmas and I took them out in it. Everyone loves it. What are some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of restoring an old vehicle like this?

Starting up the motor was unbelievable! When we got the motor we had to do everything, the crank, the bearings, the pistons, everything was worn out. When we took the oil out it was worse than Vegemite, it just wouldn’t come out because it had been sitting for so many years in the shed. The car has all wooden wheels on it, and we didn’t have to touch the wooden wheels, thankfully, we just had to clean them up. They were made in 1926 and the car was made in 1928, so we were very, very lucky in that way. But the motor was a big deal. I nearly cried when I started!

Did you have much experience in restorations before this?

Nope! I’m a fruit and veggie person, if you could call it a trade. I used to work for a fruit and veggie mob in Canberra for 28 years. Then I came up here and worked for the local Toyota as a gardener for 20 years and then I retired and started on my Chev to finish it off. I’ve got no mechanical experience, but I can fix things and I will try my hand at anything. Are you and your Chevvy involved in any shows or events?

I’ve taken her to two different events in Coffs Harbour and won something twice. A few weekends ago they had a thing down at the Jetty Foreshores called Summer Beach Hop and I won Top 10 out of 120 cars. Then they had a show at Park Beach Plaza and I won there as well. She’s a good old rocket, everyone waves to you and it’s got the old klaxon horn!

The dream

“I have plenty of money to spend on my window furnishings, I’ve heard you’re the best in the business, you have free reign, I have no idea what I’m doing, please do it for me!”

The reality – “Can I please get a quote, we already have two other quotes, we’re not sure what we want, it will be dependent on price, can you do me a deal?’’

Sure, there are some customers who are more aligned with the dream option, but most clients we work with are normal average people who want beautiful additions to their homes, by their definition not ours, and don’t want to break the bank to do it.

Put simply, it’s not about us. Sure, we are the professionals, we have been in the industry for over 20 years, we have some of the most experienced sales consultants working with us and a showroom with one of the largest ranges on the coast. But often potential clients who walk through our door, (or we walk through theirs), don’t care about our credentials, they just want someone to shut up and listen.

We ask questions and listen to the answers, what’s important to them and not what works best for us.

If you’re a first home buyer and wanting to cover your windows with roller blinds and curtains we’re not going to quote you expensive textured fabric or European linen.

If you’re a landlord looking to replace 30 years old verticals, we’re not going to suggest verishades.

If you’re a café owner, we will consider what is durable and aesthetically suits your vibe.

Not all quotes are equal. If you are shopping around, please make sure that you are getting like for like, the same quality of fabric or materials, the same delivery time and most importantly the same warranty and after care. We have a dedicated manufacturing facility and installation team, but not all companies do.

That being said, our staff spotlight this month is our sales consultant, Troy Highlands. Troy is a seasoned professional with a decade of expertise in the blinds, shutters and awning industry. With a passion for enhancing living spaces and creating functional yet aesthetically pleasing environments. Having embarked on his journey over a

decade ago, Troy has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and hands on experience in all aspects of the industry. From product design, product distribution and manufacturing to installation and customer service, which has honed his skills to deliver top notch solutions tailored to each client’s needs.

Throughout his career, Troy has demonstrated a keen eye for detail, a commitment to quality craftmanship, and a dedication to customer satisfaction. His expertise extends across a wide range of products, including residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces, where he has consistently delivered innovative and stylish solutions that stand the test of time.

Troy is known for his professionalism, integrity, and ability to build lasting relationships with our clients and industry partners alike. Troy understands the importance of communication, collaboration, and exceeding expectations, which has earned him a reputation as a trusted expert in the field. Tell us the reasons why you chose Pycon as your preferred builder?

There was never another option when it came to choosing our builders. We had previously built with Pycon in 2016 and the positive experience made the choice a ‘without question’ one. Pycon is a step above in all aspects; from planning, design and

What was your favourite part of the building process? With two young children, they were excited to see the progress and insisted that we did a ‘drive by’ every single day! The nice thing was that something seemed to be happening and progressing all of the time. It was very evident that Pycon were different from the other builders. We saw other homes (being built by other companies) start before us and they are still being worked on now, some staying dormant for weeks and months at a time. Pycon honoured all timelines that were outlined on their website. We could always see our home being built on schedule with no delays.  Did anything surprise you during the construction phase? We were so blessed to have great weather for the duration of our build. How did you decide on the design and layout of your new home? Although our block was the largest in the Stage Seven release at 727m2, we had quite a unique shaped block with very small road frontage and six different fence line neighbours. To make the best use of the block space, we wanted to ‘hug’ the left hand side boundary to make the biggest possible play area and backyard for the children. We started with a base plan and Belina helped us bring our hopes and dreams into a reality. We made so many customisations so that every aspect of the house was exactly how we wanted it. We added room to each of the bedrooms and also added an additional study.

What features or amenities are you most excited about in your new home? We are absolutely in love with the kitchen and walk in pantry. We knew this space would be great when we were planning it, but seeing it in real life just added to our excitement. We have so much storage space and a very functional area. We also love the open plan area that looks out over the pool and backyard. Did you work with any specific contractors that you would recommend?

We have always been impressed with the contractors that Pycon use. Staff at Color Tiles with Style, Floorworld, Reece Plumbing were all great and Cindy from Brett Hoy Electrical was amazing! It was always evident that the inclusions that Pycon allowed for in the build were of a much higher standard than the ‘basic’ range.

It

was always evident that the inclusions that Pycon allowed for in the build were of a much higher standard than the ‘basic’ range.

After the build, we added a pool to the block. Narellan Pools (Jason) and Mid Coast Glass (Guy) were great with the installation. We also had two different landscaping companies help with the installation of the turf. Scotty from Down 2 Earth Landscaping went above and beyond to help ensure we were as happy with the outside as we were the inside of the house.

What advice would you give to others who are considering building their own home? Take the time to think carefully about what matters most to you. Think about how you are going to use each of the spaces. Never be afraid to come prepared with your own ideas, staff at Pycon always did

everything they could to help us bring all of our dreams into reality. The more planning you can do early on, the more accurate your final pricing will be. We never had any financial surprises along the way. If you are using other builders, ensure you check your inclusions before signing the contract. This was never a concern for us with Pycon, but we have friends that built with other builders and were always getting additional costings and having their budgets ‘blow out’.

Was there anything that you learnt along the way that you would do differently? Honestly, we wouldn’t change a thing! We feel we were so well looked after by all of the staff at Pycon and everything we asked for has been delivered on. We have no hesitation in recommending Pycon to anyone that wants a beautiful home, delivered on schedule, with everything that you have asked for!

IYour Interior Decor The Art of Layering

nterior decorating often requires a keen eye for detail, a sense of balance, and the ability to create a cohesive and inviting space. One of the most effective techniques in achieving this is the art of layering. Layering involves combining different elements, textures, and colours to create depth, interest, and a sense of warmth in a room. Here’s a few simple tips on how to master the art of layering.

The Base Layer: Foundations and Sentiments The base layer is the foundation upon which you build your scheme. This layer typically includes larger furniture pieces, rugs, and sentimental items like artwork or family heirlooms. These elements are often the most permanent and expensive components of your decor, and they tend to move with you from home to home.

When selecting your base layer, consider the overall style and colour palette you want to achieve.

Choose pieces that not only reflect your personal taste but also complement the architectural features of the room. For example, a modern, minimalist sofa might work well in a space with clean lines and ample natural light, while a plush, pillowy sofa could add warmth and coziness to a more traditional setting.

Rugs are also an essential part of the base layer, as they anchor the space and define the boundaries of different areas. When choosing a rug, consider the size, pattern, and texture

that best suits your room.

The Mid Layer: Smaller Functional Accents

The mid layer consists of smaller furniture pieces, such as side tables, accent chairs, and ottomans. These items serve both functional and decorative purposes, providing additional seating, storage, and visual interest. When selecting pieces for the mid layer, consider their scale and proportion in relation to the base layer. Opt for pieces that complement the overall style and colour palette while adding contrast and texture. Aim to create a dynamic interplay of materials and shapes.

The mid layer is also an opportunity to introduce colour or pattern through upholstery or accent pieces. A boldly patterned ottoman or a vibrant accent chair can add depth and personality to a space without overwhelming it.

The Top Layer: Finishing Touches

The top layer is where you can truly let your creativity shine. This layer includes smaller decor pieces, such as cushions, throws, vases, candles, tableware and various other accessories. These items are often the most affordable and easily changeable elements of your decor, allowing you to experiment with trends and seasonally refresh your space.

When selecting items for the top layer, consider texture, colour, and scale. Mixing different textiles such as velvet, linen, and wool, can add depth and visual interest and texture to a room. Incorporating a variety of colours and patterns

can also create a dynamic and engaging space, but be mindful of balance and cohesion.

Accessories like vases, candles, and decorative objects can be used to add colour, introduce natural elements, or showcase your personal style. Arrange these items in groupings or vignettes to create focal points and draw the eye around the room. Finally, don’t forget about scent. Adding beautiful and calming fragrances to your space is the ultimate top layer.

Mastering the Art of Layering The key to mastering the art of layering is to approach each layer with intention and a keen eye for detail. Start with a solid foundation in the base layer, then build upon it with the mid and top layers, introducing contrast, texture, and visual interest along the way.

Remember, layering is an ongoing process. As your tastes and needs evolve, you can easily update and refresh your space by swapping out accessories or introducing new pieces to the mid or top layers.

One last tip. If you aren’t yet confident enough to embrace your own unique style, or if you find yourself wondering where to start, I always suggest working with neutrals. Neutrals are a fail-safe way to begin because they are classic, timeless and restful to the eye and you still have scope for adding interest by - you guessed it - layering. Layering using different textures will add depth to your interior.
