DRESS CASUAL CHIC BY: LAUREN ROBERTS

KINGS AND QUEENS OF THE STREET STRUT THEIR WAY DOWN THE PAVEMENT WITH EFFORTLESS STYLE. THE BEAUTY OF A CASUAL CHICK LOOK IS THAT IT CAN BE DONE FROM THE HEIGHT OF A CHUNKY PAIR OF WEDGES OR FROM A FLAT PAIR OF KICKS. CASUAL CHIC IS DRESSING DOWN; BUT DRESSING DOWN IN A RATHER STYLISH WAY. THE KEY THING IS TO REMEMBER NOT TO OVERDO IT – A PAIR OF STATEMENT PANTS IS BETTER OFF WITH A BASIC SHIRT; AN ARMFUL OF SOME CHUNKY JEWELLERY AND SOME STILETTO HEELS WILL WORK WITH A FLOATY, OFFTHE-SHOULDER DRESS AND A FLORAL TIE AND SUSPENDERS CAN WORK BEST IF TEAMED WITH CHINO PANTS AND A SHIRT WITH THE SLEEVES ROLLED UP TO THE ELBOW.

A REFINED STYLE FOR STREET CLASSICS

14

W W W. FJ O R D E M A G A Z I N E . C O M

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP ADOPT A STREET CLASSIC LOOK: 1. Buy a pair of jeans to build your look around. Maybe two. One tight pair of blue or black denim basics and an oversized boyfriend pair. Rips down the front are more than acceptable. Turning up the ends to show the ankle is encouraged. 2. Overdo the accessories. Add some chunky jewellery, oversized scarves, a statement belt, a drop necklace and a large bag to fit everything you will need on your adventures inside. 3. Invest in some oversized basics. White blouses, oversized tees, singlets, floaty maxi dresses, button-down shirts, genie pants and pieces that you can mix-and-match with what is currently living in your wardrobe. 4. Invest in some great new kicks. Get a new pair of low-tops or chunky runners with a bit of height. Bright colours, pastels, bold material, as simple as it gets or little bit of a heel; anything goes as long as your feet don’t complain. Team these shoes with some funky high socks or stockings to show off a bit of your personality. 5. Get a new blazer. Maybe two. Make sure that they fit well, especially if you are wearing it over big basic shirts. If you don’t like blazers think about investing in a leather jacket – brown leather with some matching boots or an exposed belt - a simple way of making an outfit suddenly stylish. 6. Get some sunnies to see you through the season. Even if the sky looks cloudy now, when the sun starts peeking through the clouds in a few months you will be grateful you have already found a pair that works and is waiting for you atop your dresser.

7. Get a fresh cut. Trim the beard boys – and style the soft hair on your head with less gel. Ladies, make best friends with the conditioner. Soft flowing hair, block colours and minimal fuss top the heads. Don’t have the effort to do a hair treatment? Use a big floppy hat to hide this fact from the world and project the illusion that you did. 8. Use minimal make-up. The causal chic look is flattered by a nude face and glowing skin. Use the extra time saved on a face of make-up to put on a facemask. Paint your nails peach. Make sure you moisturise. Drink a lot of water. Exfoliate. 9. Grab some soft pattered dresses and funky button-down shirts. Paisley, handkerchief, flannelette, check, floral; pick some styles that will work with chinos, jeans and the accessories that are spilling out of your wardrobe. If you have a lot of basic shirts – get some statement bottoms. If you’re a basic pants person – get some blouses or jackets that can work with what you have. Less is more. 10. Remember to work with your strengths. Skinny jeans on the thighs you love; chunky belts over maxi dresses to show off your tiny waist; peplum cuts to skim your hips; slim-fit shirts to show off the shoulders and high waisted pants to make short legs look longer. Yes, yes, the idea is to dress down – but dress down in a stylish, seemly effortless way. Remember not to overdo it. If you think are in danger of overdoing it – take two items off. If the look still works then keep them off. Heels not necessary, but if that’s what you’re comfortable in – wear them. Suit pants not necessary, but if you are teaming a pair of skinny suit trousers with a basic white tee and a funky scarf – wear it.

ATTITUDE IS IMPORTANT AND FOR SOME OF US IT CAN BE EVERYTHING BECAUSE IT LENDS ITSELF TO A DISTINGUISHING OPPORTUNITY IN CHOOSING OUR DAY. CHOICE AND ALL ITS INTERMEDIARIES ENCAPSULATE US IN A WOVEN FABRIC OF REALITY WHICH IS A TRUE PROJECTION OF OUR MIND AND OUR PERSONAL CONSCIOUSNESS.

Who knows what can come from understanding the layer of secrets involved within the universe. It is true that the understanding of the absolute is also the understanding of the inner world we all have. The universe in effect is within us and because of this what we are able to intermix into this world laden itself abridged with life’s pleasures and pains, with its triumphs Today is a very opportunistic day, we are and its disappointments. With in street style department we will be seeing much more of Checked tailoring. Many of us Chosen for just one check piece “a well cut over coat or suit jacket as the focal point of their out fit or layered different types of checks for an effects that may sound over the top. On the other hand as we move to new season contrast sleeves or gilets jackets took place and kicked the trend up a notch. Opting for jackets with simply contrasting sleeves, whether in terms of colour or fabrics. As in must have to men’s street style wardrobe a statement overcoat must be take in to consideration, yet if you haven’t already secured one, a statement overcoat- whether it’s a timeless single breasted classic in black or grey or something in louder colour may be this is the time to top of your sartorial wish list. To top your wardrobe for this season Voluminous Scarves are must have for this winter and also seen in the fashion market and this type of scarf certainly aren’t getting any smaller among fashion Fan-addict. On the final note if you’re on the look out for some excitement to bring your current wardrobe bang-up-to-date, then incorporate one or more of these trend is a great place to start.

MELBOURNE’S BLOGGING DUOTURNEDDESIGNERS

Andrew and Miranda, the power couple behind one of Melbourne’s best known style blogs - StyleGallivanter.com, recently took Canberra’s Fashion Week (Fashfest) by storm, with the launch of their very own design label mirandaSAKHINO. Their stunning Resort Collection can only be described as Mad Men meets Bridgitte Bardot in Marrakech, and was undoubtedly a crowd favourite. As the models strutted on the runway with their larger than life hair, oversized scarves and cat-eye sunglasses, we could only but anticipate a great show. There was an abundance of golden sheens and pastels translated into animal print, fully accessorized in traditional African millinery including turbans and shimmering head baskets. I knew this pair had more than achieved their mission when the audience gasped in unison as the last look came out. This show-stopping creation was definitely nothing short of regal; a modern, cosmopolitan version of a Nubian princess indeed, encased in a remarkably structured, vibrant, giraffe print two-piece. The eponymous contemporary label mirandaSAKHINO represents a fusion of races where fashion is used to interpret cultures, and as a tool to restore the harmony between stories from different worlds. In the collections, Miranda draws on her Afro-Euro

heritage to fuel her creative inspiration. This results in a perfect blend of African and Western fashion that calls for the respect of both worlds. The label offers pieces that appeal to the modern, refined, cosmopolite who is style-conscious, loves fashion and values the clothes’ timeless nature and functional wearability. Miranda and Andrew manufacture locally (Australian-made), designing and printing their own fabrics too. The brand is environmentally conscious and uses sustainable fabrics. From the many outstanding reviews, it is clear that mirandaSAKHINO were a favourite, and this was well deserved. From blogging to designing, we can only look forward to seeing what the future holds for this trailblazing duo, as they go where not many bloggers have gone before. The style world better take note. The mirandaSAKHINO Resort Collection will be available for sale in September 2015.

IN A TIME WHEN PEOPLE ARE OBSESSED WITH TAKING THE PERFECT PICTURE, KARIN LOCKE IS TAKING THE EGO OUT OF PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY. KARIN LOCKE IS THE CREATIVE BRAINS BEHIND MELBOURNE BASED PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO, AWKWARD PORTRAITS. HER COLLECTION OF 80S INSPIRED PORTRAITS HAVE BEEN PROVING A HIT AT BIRTHDAYS, OFFICE PARTIES AND WEDDINGS ALIKE. WITH CLIENTS WILLINGLY FORGOING THE TRADITIONAL PORTRAIT SHOTS TO DAWN SLOUCHY SWEATERS, BOAS AND THRIFT SHOP SUNGLASSES, LOCKE IS PROVING THAT GETTING YOUR PICTURE TAKEN IS ALL ABOUT HAVING A LITTLE FUN.

During the course of her career, Locke has tried her hand at a range of styles, however, found her passion in portraits. “Whether they’re an experienced model or someone who’s really nervous about getting their headshot, being able to chat, communicate and coax out emotions is just something you’ll never get from an inanimate object,” she said. Locke stumbled upon the idea of Awkward Portraits while throwing an ugly sweater party for friends in Canada, but it wasn’t until she moved to Melbourne that the concept really took off. With a genuine love of art, photography and all things 80s, it’s not hard to see why Locke’s clients enjoy spending time with her while getting their picture taken. The 2014 Christmas event at Melbourne Central and Comedy Festival photo booth at the Tuxedo Cat earlier this year saw people queuing for up to half an hour to a strike quirky pose.

Going against the grain of perfectly crafted images, and the selfie generation is all part of the appeal. The photographer proudly describes her clients’ experiences of letting go enough to take an intentionally bad picture as surprisingly liberating. She refers to the process as “taking the ego out of a portrait”. Locke’s latest brain child is the 80s Glamour Portraits. Boas, scrunhies, big hair and bright eye shadow are all staples. Not to mention the wide eyed stares directly to the lens. The decade’s favourite teen movies, Flash Dance, Footloose and Sixteen Candles all come to mind. Teaming up with award-wining make-up artist and hair dresser, Elle Cosgrove, this package is a hen’s night dream come true. It’s a perfect partnership as Locke noted, “Elle knows what she’s doing, she studied period makeup and the 80s is such an iconic era for beauty”. “Elle understands what photographs well and what doesn’t,” she added. The package gives the bride to be and her guests a little pampering, the chance to play dress up and of course have a laugh. All of which are hen’s night must haves. Locke also described weddings a one of the more exciting settings to shoot her portraits. “Those sorts of environments are really interesting because of the family dynamics”, she said, “I love it when older folks get talked into it by younger people”.

40

W W W. FJ O R D E M A G A Z I N E . C O M

The charm of the portraits are not just in the images themselves, but the experience of having them taken, its dress-up for adults. The most important thing for Locke during these events is making sure the subjects are comfortable and hopefully “feeling a little silly”, she joked. To the delight of her subject’s Locke also assigns roles and background stories to the characters in her images, allowing them to really take on a different persona. The best part of course is seeing the image afterwards and hearing the bursts of uncontrollable laughter. She credits this moment as being the heart of a successful shoot. When thinking back to any special event, it’s great remembering all the amazing people and personalities that were present. Awkward Portraits gives guests at events ranging from weddings to office Christmas parties, the chance to let their hair down. They can also take comfort in knowing there is an extremely enthusiastic professional in charge. Following the photographer’s lead is Locke’s main tip. “If they’re giving you direction, take it, because they know how to make you look your best,” she said. Over the last few years photo booths have become a proven hit among party guests. It eases the formality of the event and gives guest a chance to let loose. Locke’s Awkward Portraits just takes this to the next level.

WINTER 2015

BACK IN THE DAY, THE CULDE-SAC AT THE END OF YOUR STREET WAS THE BEST PLACE FOR A GAME OF STREET HOCKEY OR CRICKET WITH YOUR FRIENDS. AN ENTIRE SUBCULTURE HAS BEEN BUILT WITHIN SKATEPARKS, WHERE PEOPLE CAME TOGETHER TO DO SOMETHING THEY ENJOY.

Street sports, like these, have always had a significant place in urban culture. Now, there’s a new way to both challenge yourself and have a great time with your friends. Tough Mudder is more than just a 16-20 km obstacle course. Testing both strength and stamina, Tough Mudder was created to redefine the purpose of sport. Its British creators, Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, first came up with the idea in 2010. There were a number of reasons why it was introduced, including an experience Dean had at a Triathlon. Paul Mudge from Tough Mudder Australia told us about it: “When [Dean] came out of the water, the zipper on his wetsuit got stuck. He was running next to this guy and said to him, “Can you give me a hand and help me undo my zipper?” And the guy just looked at him and said, “Look mate, we’re in this race against each other. I’m not going to help you.” And he took off. Will thought to himself, ‘I need to create an event where people are not worried about getting to the finish line as quickly as possible; they’re there to help each other.”

When Tough Mudder was first brought to Australia in 2012, they only had one event in Melbourne. Since then, it has grown immensely. There have been many events held across the different capital cities, and has now become a part of our culture. This year, it is expected that there will be 20 000 to 40 000 participants Australia-wide. So why do people keep going back? Tough Mudder has a strong set of values intertwined into the obstacles. They are all designed to teach each participant something new as they process through the course. Teamwork is the most crucial of all its values. “It’s not about finishing first; it’s not about getting over the line the quickest. It’s about helping your fellow mudders complete the course,” Paul says. You may look at Tough Mudder as a race for gym junkies and personal trainers, however, it’s not. It is an excuse of those of different shapes, sizes and fitness levels to come together and challenge themselves. It is a test for your mentality, and also your friendships. Paul says there are different aspects of the course where different people will have different strengths, so those who are more physically fit are not always at an advantage. “They might get to a course where it really designed as a mental type of obstacle and they will freeze and need a Mudder to encourage them to get over their fear of heights or dive into the ice or get into that dark spot.”

This is why the sense of community that often brings people together is a huge part of Tough Mudder. The Tough Mudder community, or ‘Mudder Nation’, is bound together by the common goal that have of getting through the obstacles as they grow together in strength and tenacity. The orange headband they receive when they cross the finish line is a symbol of that achievement. We live in a world where we are overwhelmed by technology. We often let it consume us, distracting us from the real world. The rehabilitation of street sport has encouraged us to turn away from our screens and try something new. “I think there’s something really special about getting people to spend time with their friends away from their smart phones, and I think that’s what street sport is about,” Paul says. The growth of Tough Mudder over the years has brought street sport into the mainstream. It allows us to relive those times that we had, becoming what Paul describes as “a licence for adults to have fun.” The true prize at the end is the sense of accomplishment. This is clear in the videos the participants create to share online. Paul says this is helping in spreading the word and encouraging new people to give it a go. “It’s such a visual kind of experience. I think that’s why Tough Mudder has been so successful.” This year Tough Mudder will be held in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne towards the end of the year. Check out the website to see how you can get involved. You never know what you can achieve until you try.

HIDDEN GEMS

HIDDEN GEMS: T U C K E D AWAY FOR SAFE KEEPING BY LAUREN ROBERTS

AUSTRALIA IS A YOUNG COUNTRY, BUT THE ENERGY OF AUSTRALIANS IS INTOXICATING. AS SUCH, IT ISN’T SURPRISING THAT IN EVERY CAPITAL THERE IS A HIDDEN GEM TUCKED AWAY WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED.

FALL FROM GRACE; 477 COLLINS STREET, MELBOURNE [MELBOURNE] State of Grace is the venue that you walk inside of. The walls are full of books, decorations and treasures. The bar menu encourages visitors to drink marmalade with tequila; gin and chocolate or apple and lavender in a tall glass of alcoholic happiness. Head downstairs to the cellar bar and Fall from Grace will have you spellbound from the moment you lock eyes on the chandeliers as you traverse down the many stairs. Here, the beverages get more adventurous and the music is louder as the rowdy downstairs crowd mingle in the basement. THE JAZZ CELLAR; CORNER OF BUXTON STREET AND SCARBOROUGH BEACH ROAD, MT HAWTHORN [PERTH] Fancy some free jazz on a Friday night? Walk down a dimly-lit alleyway, through an old phone booth and down a dark flight of stairs to find the Jazz Cellar. With only enough room for 100, the small entrance fee is worth it for the live music and chance to drink with 99 of your nearest and dearest friends. BYO food and drinks.

WITH THE URBAN MELBOURNE SCAPE, YOU CAN WALK BY THE SAME CITY DOOR, DAY AFTER DAY AND THE NEXT ITS BEEN TAKEN BY THE CREATIVE FABRIC OF THE CITY. WOODY.P IS ONE SUCH PLACE; A SPACE THAT WAS ONCE PART OF THE MELBOURNE CLUB SCENE HAS BEEN TRANSFORED IN TO AN OPEN, LIGHT FILLED MEMBER OF THE RICH FOOD CULTURE THAT MAKES UP MELBOURNE.

Positioned on Flinders Lane, the city’s most dynamic food precinct, Woody.P is an exciting new addition to Melbourne’s bourgeoning range of restaurants and drinking spots. Woody.P offers a fun, relaxed social destination that caters to a broad range of dining experiences. Dining at Woody.P offered an experience of Italian and Mediterranean cooking lead by head chef Clinton Camilleri, who has over the past decade, has built up an impressive portfolio of culinary experience working extensively in kitchens throughout rural Victoria. Welcomed by James and seated in the heart of Woody.P, we were able to take-in the full experience of everything around us. Complimented by a warm and happy staff that gave the space a sense of life and vitality. Only serving to enhance the overall experience of the night.

Offered a selection of the menu, so to taste the variety and opulence of flavours available we began our night with pork cheek croquettes with chorizo crumb & apple aioli and pan seared scallops with nduja, pumpkin, and pomegranate. Beautiful on its own but what’s a meal without something to wet your lips and were delighted to have a our Piccolos (Small Plates) paired with a Umberto Luigi Domenica Prosecco, (Veneto, Italy NV) and an Adele Pinot Grigio, (Sunbury, Victoria, 2013) each offering subtle flavours to compliment and enhance the food. Setting a tone for the rest of the evening the Piccolos peaked the curiosity of what delights where to come. Moving forward in our tasting experience, we were brought spinach & ricotta gnudi, tomato sugo and ricotta salata, a take on delicious modern take on pasta and patatina pizza of potato, rosemary, taleggio, caramelised onion and fior di latt, to look at, a meal all its own but light and airy that doesn’t make you feel as if you’ve over eaten. Served with a Villa Antinori Toscana, Tuscany, Italy 2010, a light and flavourful drop that I would definitely recommend to be had on its own at the bar over some good conversation. The course was finished with a 48-hour slow cooked beef rib, roast onion and gremolata, served with roasted garlic, lemon and thyme potatoes and honey mustard grilled onions and broccolini, a tender and delicate dish that leaves you wanting to come back for more! At a point in the evening when you would just be happy sitting and sipping on a glass of wine or any of the fine cocktails from the bar. Dolce is served!

Presented with a chocolate & gianduja budino, creme fraiche & sour cherry ice cream and an Alba whisky fried custard, apple terrine, and caramel ice cream was like having to choose your choose your favourite child. Both special and amazing in their own way was too hard to choose and ultimately both devoured equally. Again offered a pairing of Puni Alba whisky, (Glorenza, Italy) and Hellyers whisky cream liqueur, (Tasmania, Australia) each brought out the flavours of its counterpart. Both the pairings are recommendation for any whisky lover out there. All the while, while you are enjoying your meal and surely the company you are with. You find yourself drinking in your surroundings, designed by Eades and Bergman, the creative force behind Kong, Taxi Kitchen, Mr Miyagi and The Meatball and Wine Bar. The space offers a variety of comfortable and discrete spaces, each with its own unique look and feel, composed of polished timber floors, exposed brick walls, textured glass and contemporary pendant lighting. Whether it is the sophisticated bar area with a tiled feature wall and suspended planted hangers or the large outdoor dining area where you can eat and drink among greenery, lanterns and bluestone floors, a nod to Melbourne’s rich architectural heritage. Woody.P is a visual delight that creates an atmosphere that complements the flavours and style of its food. From a night out with friends to a romantic evening with that special someone, Woody.P brings together an array of subtle elements to provide every diner with a unique and wonderful experience that caters to the needs and wants of every person that it has the pleasure to serve. Woody.P is sure to become a Melbourne staple!

WINTER 2015

THE PRIDE OF MELBOURNE’S INDIEPOP SCENE ARE AT IT AGAIN WITH A NEW ALBUM, A NEW SOUND AND A NATIONAL TOUR PLANNED FOR JUNE. FJORDE CAUGHT UP WITH LEAD SINGER PHOEBE BAKER TO TALK ALL THINGS ALPINE.

In 2012, Melbourne based indie-pop band Alpine, released their debut album A Is for Alpine which debut at number 1 on the ITunes album chart. The three years following have been spent playing live shows to an ever expanding global fan base, traveling all over the world touring and experiencing every awkward, uncomfortable situation early twenty’s life has to offer, experiences that inspired much of the band’s new album, Yuck. The group’s sophomore album, drops on June 12th. The songs explore that ill, body quivering feeling that seem to be littered throughout everyday life and the uncomfortable situations we all face. “It came to us really easily, and that never happens” says Phoebe Baker, one half of Alpines lead singing duo, when quizzed about the unusual title of the album. “It’s a lyric in the song foolish (the second track off the album) and it epitomises what’s on the album, it’s one of those emotions in life that doesn’t quite sit well with you, a little bit awkward and gross”.

From the first track off the album Come on, which softly winds and drifts effortlessly into the next, it is clear that Alpine has experimented with their already signature sound and created something special, something the band are excited to see finally aired out. Each member of Alpine adds such a distinct element to the group, helping to create an irresistibly original sound and one of kind album. “We are very curious and excited to see what happens, we have been listening to this album for a long time now so it’s hard to hear it with fresh ears, il be intrigued to see what people think of it.” Baker said. Yuck has been three years in the making and has allowed the band to relax, take their time and produce something they ultimately believe, personifies what Alpine is about.

“One a writing front, initially it was more Christian and that was I think the pure element of Alpine. But now it’s more of a collaborative writing process so it is changing”

ALPINE ARE BACK

Compared to their debut album, Yuck has been a far more tranquil development. “A is for Alpine we did quite quickly, we had a lot of songs written and they would sit around for a while before we went in the studio where it was just sort of bam bam bam. With this one we had over 6 months in the studio here and there, so lots of time to hone in every little detail. We were working with Dan Hume again which was just awesome because he is like our brother, it was easy. So nice to take our time.” Phoebe says it was having more time that attributed to a noticeably deeper level of grit and honesty in the lyrics throughout the album. “I think we weren’t really sure of ourselves and what we wanted to create when we first started but now, it feels as if we are more self-confident and relaxed and open, it feels more fun to write that way and feel like you can connect more. I do think the lyrics are more honest and why not.”

Jelly fish – one of the more recent tracks off the album, is societal attack on self-acceptance and the pressures of physical expectations. The song is also a personal favourite for Baker, “I love Jellyfish, writing that really struck a chord, I think that’s more a sign of things to come.”

“I can’t wait! It feels like ages since we did a national tour, we are a bit nervous but of course excited, it feels like we are starting again a little bit” Aside from the Album, June also sees Alpine embark on their first national tour in more than 12 months, a tour the group are eager to embark on. “I can’t wait! It feels like ages since we did a national tour, we are a bit nervous but of course excited, it feels like we are starting again a little bit” says Baker.

The band will begin their month long tour in Adelaide on the 24th before winding their way through Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra “One a writing front, initially it was more Christian and that was I think the pure element and finishing in Sydney with the splendour in of Alpine. But now it’s more of a collaborative the grass festival, where the band have “big things” planned. writing process so it is changing”.

Playing at the forum theatre in Melbourne on June 27 will be a homecoming of sorts for Alpine and is definitely a focal point of the tour, for a few reasons. “I love the Forum theatre and the home crowd. We are very excited for that we have things planned. It is also Lou’s 27th birthday on the 27th so it’s all a bit cosmic, a bit special, so we will be planning something for that. The whole tour really, I can’t wait”. And neither can the rest of us. Alpine are back.
