GORGEOUS, SUN KISSED, GLOWING SKIN IS A MUST FOR THE SPRING BRIDE AND EVERY ‘BRIDE TO BE’ SHOULD SHINE ON HER SPECIAL DAY...THAT IS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HER FACE! THE LAST PLACE YOU WANT TO “SHINE” IS YOUR FACE, AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES WOMEN MAKE IS APPLYING AN ILLUMINATING BRONZER TO THE ENTIRE FACE; THIS CAN LEAVE YOU LOOKING LIKE A GREASY, SPARKLING DISCO BALL – NOT A GOOD LOOK. BE SURE TO APPLY A HIGHLIGHTING BRONZER ONLY TO THE HIGHEST POINTS OF THE FACE: TOP OF BROW BONE, CENTRE OF NOSE, CHIN AND CHEEKBONES.

MY TOP PICK

MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in ‘Gold Deposit’

A sexy, defined eye will always be on trend. Spice it up with a bold red lip, or for Spring playfulness, gloss it up with a bold pink or tangerine lip-gloss for a modern fresh look.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick True Red (Coral Red)

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Lip Lacquer in ‘08’

For adventurous brides, finding the right shade of shadow to compliment your eye colour can really make eyes the sexy, standout focal point for your ‘big’ look. Brown eyes being a neutral tone have the largest range of colour options to flatter the eye. Deep shades of navy blue and green add sexy drama for brown-eyed beauties. Warm shades of grey, brown, copper and bronze, pop and add sparkle to blue eyes, while green eyes gleam on shades with red undertones, such as lavender and violet. Hazel eyes are in-between green and brown so to draw out the green/yellow hews of hazel eyes, lean toward violet and plum shades. To make hazel eyes a deeper brown, opt for bronze and brown eye-shadows. Still undecided? Purple tones flatter all eye colours. Line your lower lash line with a bright lavender shadow or for instant drama, smoke up the whole eye with neutral shades of brown, aubergine and a hint of sexy plum.

TIP: Primer is a must for a Spring wedding; it gives foundation/powder the perfect base to grab and stick to with the added bonus of minimising pores, blurring wrinkles and a flawless foundation. Without it, expect a little heat-wave to melt all the hard work of gorgeous foundation away! Makeup Forever - HD Microperfecting Prime

HAIR MOMENTS

HAIR MOMENTS WORDS | NATASHA SAMARDZIJA

Get glamour during the spring with light and loose old Hollywood waves. This gentle curl compliments your face without taking too much attention away from everything else but also gives you an air of casual sophistication. This is perfect for the brides who are looking to focus the attention on their biggest detail, the dress. Try using Redken’s Control Addict 28 High Control Hairspray to make sure the humidity doesn’t destroy the waves.

French knot your locks to keep your hair out of your face if you’re planning to tie the knot on a warmer day. Add refinement by clustering your favourite seasonal florals to create your own hair piece heaven. This personalised touch adds grace and beauty especially because it was something relevant to you. TIP: If the flowers you want come at a price, compromise by having them in your hair. This way you get what you want without breaking the budget. Try Muk’s Kinky Muk Curl Leave in Moisturiser to strengthen hair and eliminate potential frizz

Be adventurous with your braid! If you’re looking for something different and dramatic but don’t want it all down, opt for a textured side braid. You get the best of both worlds by having a down up-do. Pair with your favourite head-piece, whether flowers or jewels, and you’re ready to make a statement. Try using Kevin Murphy Texture Master

SPRING 2015

Frame your face with a braided headband interlocked with gentle flora if you’re looking for a style inspired by nature. The loose locks around your face add elegance to the messy back making you look ethereal on your big day. Try using John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blowout Spray to allow all elements of the hair have some density

Simple and stunning. If you have a lot of hair and are limited on options, pop it up into a large bun. Be a little untidy with it to give some dimension. Not only will it brighten up your face, but on a hot day it’s going to be out of sight and out of mind. Try Eleven Give me Hold Strong Hairspray to make sure it doesn’t move

Looking for something simple yet refined and regal? Go for a half-up half-down look. While your tresses tail behind you, having this duo hair style mixes casual and elegance for brides looking to take it easy on their day. This hairdo has room to be personalised by the bride because you can leave it as is or decide to add something old, new, borrowed or blue. Try using Label.M Frizz control Serum if you’re looking to keep the hair straight and polished

THE BACKDROP OF YOUR CEREMONY ISN’T SOMETHING THAT MANY COUPLES PUT TOO MUCH THOUGHT INTO, ESPECIALLY WITH EVERYONE ELSE ON THEIR MINDS, BUT THE ALTAR IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF ANY WEDDING. THE ALTAR WILL BE THE CENTREPIECE OF YOUR WEDDING, THE BACKDROP OF YOUR CEREMONY PHOTOS, AND THE PLACE WHERE YOU AND YOUR FIANCÉE FINALLY SAY ‘I DO’. THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT OPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING YOUR ALTAR AND ITS DÉCOR, WITH A LOT OF THEM SO EASY YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF. FJORDE BRIDE HAVE SEARCHED HIGH AND LOW FOR FIVE OF THE EASIEST AND MOST AESTHETICALLY PLEASING WEDDING ALTARS THAT YOU CAN DO YOURSELF.

1. Fairy lights provide a twinkling backdrop to your altar and add extra light to indoor or evening ceremonies. Fairy lights are readily available from stores and are a cheap, yet effective choice for your altar backdrop.

W W W. FJ O R D E B R I D E . C O M

19

BRIDE

AT T H E A LT E R

2. Flowers and greenery draped over a simple frame or hanging from the ceiling look beautiful at any wedding and can make your altar really stand out and be the focal point. Fresh flowers are always ideal however fake flowers can be used in place of them and look just as good, especially if you are sticking to a tight budget.

3. Sometimes the simpler the better. Simple structures can really complement your wedding theme, especially if it’s a modern or minimal style. Timber, branches, and metal are just some of the materials you could use. Simple altars are also practical as they don’t obstruct any amazing views.

20

FJ O R D E B R I D E

SPRING 2015

4. If the ceremony is outside utilise the natural environment and work with what is around you. Use a cluster of trees, rose bushes, or any natural form that can act as your altar backdrop. Use bunting, ribbons or flags to accentuate these natural features.

5. Fabric can look phenomenal draped or hung as a backdrop. Make sure that you choose fabric that goes with the rest of your wedding theme and colour palette. Chiffons, soft tulles, and even store-bought curtains can all be used to decorate your altar.

SPRING 2015

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DESIGNING WEDDING DRESSES? In 1996 we launched the first eveningwear collection. Back then I was dancing and I couldn’t find anything that I could justify spending money on so we did the costuming ourselves. We went ahead and started designing our own clothes. When you launch something you don’t know how the client base is going to take it, but then clients responded well to our collection AND started requesting us to make their wedding dresses. From our eveningwear collection it was like it was meant to be! I THINK BEING A DESIGNER MEANS YOU HAVE TO PLAY PSYCHOLOGIST A LITTLE BIT – YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND A BRIDE’S PERSONALITY TO FIND THE RIGHT THEME AND COLOURS. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START? Firstly, I always make them sit down and chat to make the bride relaxed and comfy. Then we pull out all the silhouettes to establish what kind of fit they like – whether it’s a fitted flared look or ball gown and we really go from there. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF BEING A DESIGNER? The girls. I love my clients I really do. To me it’s an honour to be apart of the big day. That’s our favourite moment. It’s almost like we become a part of their family – because the dresses are chosen, fitted and altered within a span of 6 – 9 months. We also have a lot of beautiful Irish brides and we’re lucky because we have Skype in the store. It’s a beautiful moment when a bride’s mother is in Ireland and she’s in the kitchen congratulating her daughter over Skype. It’s such a celebration and we love being able to bring family together. It’s even like we’re getting ready with the family as well.

My philosophy is that finding the dress is a life altering and emotional moment. Some brides come in who are very nervous whilst others have their Pinterest boards all ready, are good at organising and have a strong sense of self. I love having a nice chat with the brides when they come in and it’s important that their perception of inner beauty matches with the dress that they choose. Another lot that come through are stunning but have no confidence, so I love getting to know the bride so she can express everything that is unique to her and her lifestyle. I get to meet every client one on one to be involved with each of the brides and I make sure that their confidence reflects within.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF POP UP WEDDINGS? THEY’VE BECOME MORE POPULAR RECENTLY! No I haven’t! Organisers to the same display and set up and you can pay an hour and a half. We can find the perfect dress for a relatively stress free and small ceremony.

WHAT DO YOU THINK A BRIDE’S SHOPPING EXPERIENCE SHOULD BE LIKE DURING THEIR APPOINTMENT? Hopefully it should be one on one - that’s the way we do it! Clientele love the fact that they have time to think. There’s always only one person in the store as opposed to four girls trying dresses on at the same time. It means that the experience is more personalised and we really get to know the families over the 6-9 month period.

SPRING IS HERE, WHICH MEANS BETTER WEATHER! WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU NOTICING THAT YOU’RE USING IN YOUR NEW COLLECTION? I’d sat that very sweet laces are trending, which are traditional but refined. During changing seasons, the basic dress doesn’t change but I’ve noticed that there’s been more elegant beadwork. Simple lines, satin detail and a pop of lace are trending too. We have a halter neck with sheer panels that has a beachy, sexy and relaxed feel, which is popular for spring.

The appointment is all about the bride. As a sales person or designer, your job is to make sure to steer them in the right direction – especially figuring out their thoughts and interests on the dresses they try on. Of course we also have champagne when we find the right dress! But we also take a photo of the bride in her dress, which is a nice way of preserving the memory of the moment. DO YOU HAVE A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR BRIDES ON THEIR WEDDING DAY? Enjoy it! So much effort and time goes into all the details. If something small goes wrong don’t sweat it. Everyone attending loves you! A lot of brides will ask me “What if they don’t like the gown?” and I tell them that it’s the meaning behind the wedding that matters most. It’s a very overwhelming process – especially when magazines, blogging and suppliers now have jumped on board with social media these days.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE? I’m so simple, and love the classic and understated style– but I love shoes! I love laces, silks and satins that are classic and elegant.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? Meeting one on one with the girls. I get to understand each individual client’s feelings. I love hearing a bit of insight into the bride’s journeys. Even the girls who have never been dreaming of getting married! We go over a few little things, like the flowers that they’re getting, to get an idea of what style they’re working towards. So for example, girls who want more of a pretty look will use light blue and pink floral whilst girls who are more glamorous will go for a cheekier style. Then from there we look at the collection in store and whether they want a classic chic style or a princess bride style to classic fill gowns, v necks and strapless dresses we stock. As you can tell most of my inspiration comes from the client.

Depending on where they’re headed, we’ll show them laces, which change seasonally. These also differ and vary to reflect the girl’s personality – from classic ivory and off whites to guipure lace and even French laces with floral details. For example, a girl with a demure personality will feel more comfortable with a soft and pretty lace. Meanwhile, a luxurious lace like the silk brocade on our Annabelle gown is something different. I especially love clean lines and understated dresses so I LOVE LOVE LOVE silk brocade lace. This definitely changes depending on the mood of the wedding as well. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU LIKE? I’m actually about to update our Facebook page with the busy week we’ve had – and it’s only Wednesday! On Monday we had thirteen gorgeous brides that were either new clients or alterations. On Tuesday, it was mostly behind the scenes like altering hemlines, straps and adding beadwork. This morning a bride came in whose dress has been delayed in another store. It’s especially hard to find a new dress because you’ve already fallen in love with one and you need to find one that you can feel the same amount of love for. She found one she loved today and we all cried. It was a dramatic morning. I usually start very early in the morning and if I bring any work home, I only use social media at night and lucky for me, my kids can help me with that.

I READ ONE OF YOUR BLOG POSTS CALLED “LETTING YOUR TRUE COLOURS SHINE THROUGH” AND HOW DO YOU THINK THAT TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY STYLES CAN BE BROUGHT TOGETHER? Through the fabrics - we currently have a beautiful style collection called ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. I use French corded lace for those gowns and they’re quite popular. A more champagne or nude toned under lay is another way to get a traditional look without looking too much like a bride. Vineyard weddings and small ceremonies are often the ones that aren’t too modern and too understated.

YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT AUSTRALIA HAVING IT’S OWN BRIDAL FASHION WEEK TO BRING AUSTRALIAN DESIGNERS INTO THE SPOTLIGHT. I THINK IT’S INCREDIBLE HOW SOCIAL MEDIA THESE DAYS LETS BRIDES FROM ALL OVER AUSTRALIA LOOK AT YOUR DESIGNS - HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL TO HAVE YOUR DRESSES STOCKED IN STORES AUSTRALIA WIDE? DO YOU HAVE EXPANSION PLANS TO GO OVERSEAS? We’re having such a busy year next year. We’re launching our first wholesale collection. WHETHER YOU HAVE AN AFTERNOON TEA, SPA DAY OR WILD NIGHT ON THE TOWN, THE HEN’S NIGHT IS AN IMPORTANT PRE-WEDDING TRADITION. IT’S A GREAT CHANCE FOR THE BRIDE AND HER CLOSEST FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO GET TOGETHER, CELEBRATE AND WISH HER WELL.

However, organising a party that is classy enough to invite grandma, yet fun enough to be enjoyed by the bride’s friends is a dilemma. It’s a dilemma that has plagued the mind of many bridesmaids. In order to plan a unique Hen’s that will be enjoyed by all it may be time to look to the rest of the world for a little inspiration. In many parts of the world a wedding is incomplete without a separate pre-wedding ceremony for the bride and groom. Many of these traditions are steeped in history, cultural rituals and symbolism.

fun and loud affair. Following the “showing of presents” (a bridal shower, usually hosted by the bride’s mother), the bride’s friend’s dress her up and take her around town. They sing, dance and bang on pots and pans to herald the coming wedding day. As the girls make their way around town, the bride trades kisses for money. The money is dropped into a salt filled pot and is said to symbolise luck and prosperity.

POLTERABEND A Polterabend or “noisy evening” is a common tradition in Germany where guests break porcelain plates to bring luck to a marriage. It’s MEHNDI NIGHT an all-night party that takes place at the bride’s Weddings in India and the Gulf are known for house, usually the night before the wedding. their many rituals and days of celebrations. A TREE PLANTING CEREMONY This pre-wedding Czechoslovakian tradition aims to bless the bride and groom’s life together. Days before the wedding the bride’s female friends and family have a party where they plant a tree in her garden. The tree is then decorated with colourful ribbons and eggshells. The legend dictates the bride will live as long as the tree does. However, modern interpretations link the strength of the tree to the strength of the marriage. The eggshells represents fertility, to bless the couple with children. A TAKING OUT Most likely the origin of the Hen’s night we all know today, the Scottish “taking out” is a

ONCE UPON A TIME, IN A LAND CALLED GRANGE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, LIVED A YOUNG BOY NAMED PAUL. PAUL WOULD PLAY WITH PAPER, AND FAIRYTALE BOOKS, DREAMING ABOUT ONE DAY OWNING A CLOTHES STORE. FAST FORWARD A DECADE, AND THE LITTLE BOY PLAYING WITH PAPER IS NOW WORKING WITH SOME OF THE MOST OPULENT SILKS AND LACES IN THE WORLD. STILL A DREAMER, TODAY PAUL IS BRINGING MAGIC BACK INTO THE FASHION WORLD THROUGH PAOLO SEBASTIAN.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE INDUSTRY? My husband and I wanted a wedding with a casual beach vibe. I noticed that when I was planning my own wedding and looking for the bits and pieces that fit the bill, it became difficult. I thought that it would be a good opening for a bridal store that catered to couples that wanted a casual and more natural wedding. So, Bohemian brides came from wanting to start my own business. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I love helping people. Everyone approaches their wedding day differently and it’s about catering to those different needs. I love hearing about everyone’s stories and helping them out where I can. Especially because I have a small boutique store I can work with brides one on one. It’s definitely fun to go to work everyday! ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR BRIDES ON THEIR WEDDING DAY? Have fun! Don’t overthink your wedding on the day. At the end of the day, you’re marrying the person that you love and everything else is an added bonus. I say focus on the day the next day after you’re married and that will help with stress. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MUST HAVES FOR THE WEDDING DAY? I’m so practical but make sure you bring comfortable shoes! I’d also make sure that you have someone that you can go to for anything. Whether it is your mum, sister or bridesmaid, make sure you have someone that you can rely on. These people will definitely make you more comfortable on your wedding day if you ask anything of them. IS THERE A PIECE OF ADVICE YOU GIVE TO BRIDES WHEN LOOKING FOR A WEDDING DRESS? A lot of people come in and ask me straight away what I suggest, but I think that it’s all personal choice. You want a dress that you feel yourself in. Finding the one perfect dress feels like an overwhelming task because you expect to have the fireworks moment. You should look for a dress that ticks all the boxes. Look for the dress you can’t get out of your head. If you’re bringing someone else, make sure that they will be honest with you and respect your decision. Don’t let yourself be pushed into choosing a dress that you don’t feel yourself in. Bring someone who you really trust and value their opinion.

I KNOW YOU HANDPICK THE COLLECTION OF BRIDE AND BRIDESMAID DRESSES - WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOOK FOR IN EACH OF THE DESIGNS? I’m a small boutique so I try and pick each dress to be different to the ones that I already stock. It’s sometimes difficult because I am swayed by dresses that I like! So instead, I try to make sure that I have different dresses for different personalities and different body types. I also bring a mentor along with me who usually does purchasing with me to trust I’m making good choices. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE COLOURS AND TRENDS FOR SPRING WEDDINGS? Something that has been really popular this spring is champagne and nude lining under laces as opposed to white. More brides are also looking at geometric lace shape rather than floral shapes. Of course for spring weddings flower crowns are very popular, but also succulents for a more natural and beautiful wedding. DO YOU WATCH A LOT OF SAY YES TO THE DRESS? I’ve never seen it! Some brides come in on the first day and want to order a dress straight away. It’s a big decision to make right away so I always tell them to go home and think about it. They’re always very confused, but I want to make sure it’s really the dress that they want. I’ll call them the next day to ask if they want to order it – but once it’s ordered, it can’t be unordered. It’s usually the mums who say yes to the dress right away! WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU ONLINE TO LEARN MORE? The best place is my website: bohemianbrides. com.au. You can also find me on Instagram @ Bohemianbrides or just stop by in my store on the Gold Coast!

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF SHOOTING FAMILY WEDDINGS AND EVENTS, RAWBERRY FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR SABA KARIM SHARES HIS JOURNEY AND VAST EXPERIENCE SHOOTING CULTURAL WEDDINGS AND EVENTS GLOBALLY, AND WHY IT’S VITAL YOU CHOOSE A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO UNDERSTANDS YOUR CREATIVE VISION.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY? When I was fourteen I travelled to the United States with my family for my cousin’s wedding. Throughout the whole trip I held a camera in my hand documenting all the beautiful scenes and structures. When it came time to attend my cousin’s wedding in Houston, I was moving around and being the annoying kid in the background taking photos of everyone and capturing all the stunning colours you would expect at a cultural wedding. From then on, I went from being the token family member taking photos during family events and weddings to being sought out to capture weddings globally today. WHAT SERVICES DOES RAWBERRY OFFER? We offer a variety of services for couples based on personal preference and budget. From basic photography packages shooting the event to premium packages that include videography services from the start of the day til the last kiss goodnight. We also edit in-house and as an add-on, create beautiful online galleries for our couples to view and share. Aside from weddings, I also love capturing landscapes. It’s a moment away from the craziness of life where I get to spend an hour or two capturing the beautiful scenes God makes. HOW IS RAWBERRY DIFFERENT? Weddings are usually the first biggest day in a couple’s lives with their family and friends present. Some photographers can become quite engrossed in their work and get in the way of special moments. You will never see us directing a couple to act, fake it or do anything that ruins a moment or activity, like cutting the cake. We like shooting candid photos, with natural lighting and personality. We are there to capture what’s happened as a whole by taking a step back and complementing what’s happening in a genuine manner, not manipulating it. We love to capture genuine and special moments between the couple; that’s how we’re different and why people love our work.

YOU PHOTOGRAPH A LOT OF CULTURAL WEDDINGS – PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE? Cultural weddings are very fun; every religion and nationality have different activities and rituals, and this means you need to constantly be on the ball. My experiences have varied from traditional church weddings to extravagant weddings like the one I shot in Dallas, where the bride and groom arrived on elephant. No matter how many weddings I’ve shot, I can still never expect the same day; there’s always a different twist to cultural traditions, which makes me absolutely love my job. One Lebanese couple had a sword ceremony open the dance floor. That was bloody awesome! Pardon the pun.

excitement; it was simply amazing. Another wedding I really enjoyed was in Dubai in Palm Island; shooting there was both a professional honour and a personal achievement.

WHAT TIPS CAN YOU RECOMMEND TO COUPLES THAT ARE SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER, AND WHAT TYPES OF SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE SHOULD THEY LOOK FOR IN A PHOTOGRAPHER? Don’t accept a portfolio with one or two good photos from a four-hour night over twenty weddings - that’s not reflective of the expected overall quality. Anyone can take 5,000 photos and pick the best one from each. Instead, try and get the photographer to show you one particular wedding and go through all of the WHAT MAKES CULTURAL WEDDINGS photos from the day with them. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE LOCATION, AND WHY? As I’ve shot all over Australia, Asia, from the West and East Coast of the US and the Middle East, its difficult to choose a favourite location because as cliché it sounds, the world is a canvas and I just love traveling the world and shooting everywhere. That being said, putting aside the professional aspect, taking photos at my brothers wedding in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was absolutely breathtaking. We were so high (420 metres in the air) lightning appeared to start below us. What a sight! HOW SHOULD BRIDAL PARTIES PREPARE FOR THE BIG DAY FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER? If you have a good wedding planner they will tell you this, although it helps knowing the positions beforehand. The photographer needs to know where you will stand during the ceremony, where you will walk to and from, and who else will be involved. This information will help get that perfect natural shot and avoid having your photographer run around across the front and potentially blocking the view. Also, don’t rely on just one photographer; there is a strategy to do this and we give free advice on how to handle this! LAST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D OFFER TO BRIDE-TO-BE’S BEFORE THEIR BIG DAY? Don’t sweat the little things on the day; do as much planning as you can beforehand with your wedding planner and on the day of, have trust and faith it will work out. I am a big believer in the power of the universe and positive energy, so as the saying goes “Worrying is like walking around with an umbrella, waiting for it to rain.” I say, who cares if it rains? www.rawberrymadeit.com Instagram @imsaba Credited and mentioned as: Saba Karim - Founder/Creative Director, Rawberry

LET T H E DRI NKS FLOW A ND THE M US I C PL AY WORDS | ZAINAB SHIHAB

MUSIC ALWAYS PLAYS A BIG PART ON YOUR WEDDING DAY. THERE IS MUSIC FOR THE PROCESSION, THE CEREMONY, DANCING AT THE RECEPTION AND OF COURSE YOUR FIRST DANCE AS HUSBAND AND WIFE. COUPLES USUALLY SPEND LENGTHY TIME CHOOSING THE SOUNDTRACK FOR ALL THESE LITTLE MOMENTS THAT MAKE UP THEIR SPECIAL DAY. HOWEVER, JUST AS IMPORTANT AND MOST EASILY FORGOTTEN IS COCKTAIL HOUR MUSIC.

While the wedding party usually uses this time to take those all-important pictures, the cocktail hour is one that guests really enjoy. It gives them the chance to drink, mingle with other guests and warm up to what will be a fantastic reception. Whether you go with a band, a D.J. or a specially curated playlist from your iPod, these five tips will help you choose the music to set the mood. NO BREAKUP SONGS I love Adele and Sam Smith too, but ballads about betrayal and heartbreak are not appropriate for a wedding.

HERE’S OUR TOP TEN TO GET YOU STARTED: I. Blackbird – The Beatles II. Better Together – Jack Johnson III. Charlie Brown – Coldplay IV. Heartbeats – Jose Gonzales V. Fly Me To The Moon – Frank Sinatra VI. Valerie – Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson VII. Yellow - Coldplay cover by Boyce Avenue and Tyler Ward VIII. Is This Love – Bod Marley IX. Shots – Imagine Dragons X. Hear Your Heart – James Bay (FlicFlac Bootleg version)

TRY A FEW COVERS Covers allow you to enjoy songs you know and love a little bit differently. It can take something tired and overplayed and make it new again. MIX IN THE OLD WITH THE NEW Cocktail hour music should provide a little bit of everything. Take some of your old favourites and mix them in with current chart toppers. MIX GENRES AND STYLES Unless your wedding is themed and that includes one particular genre like jazz, don’t be afraid to mix it up. It’s surprising how well Coldplay can blend with a little bit of Frank Sinatra. STRESS LESS The loudest thing at cocktail hour will most likely be the conversation. The music is just a mood setter, so worry less. Choosing music for your wedding does not have to be a task; make a day of it. Get some friends together, open up a few bottles of wine and turn up the speakers!

SPRING TIES

SPRING TIES WORDS | ROBERTO MALIZIA

MEN’S BLOGGER ROBERTO FROM THIS IS MALICE SHARES HIS ADVICE FOR THE LATEST SPRING TRENDS AND ACCESSORIES.

Being the happiest day of your life, your wedding should also be the best-dressed day of your life, so the whole ceremony deserves your sharpest outfit. For a dapper look, I personally find the threepiece suit the best option; a matching vest adds elegance and formality to the two pieces, and it always keep your look smart even when the jacket is off. A solid and clean white shirt with a nice open cutaway collar is a smart pick for the occasion; avoid using patterns, as clashing with the bride’s outfit could be risky. A strong white shirt will never let you down. The tie will play a big role in the photos so keep it simple yet elegant at the same time. Unless it fits within your theme, don’t choose a shiny or bright piece; look for shades and earthbased colours like blue, green or burgundy. An exception would be a Rustic-themed wedding, where light blues, greens and pinks may work better against the outside backdrop. Ensure you have a tie, pocket square and sock combination for a fresh look. Like women match their bags with shoes, match your belt with your shined shoes. These types of details make the difference and paying attention to them will ensure the photos are focused on not just your clothing, but also your smiling faces. Finally, weddings are a never-ending selection of small details, so try keeping it as simple as possible. Plan everything on time, check your budget and make the decisions months prior to the day. http://thisismalice.squarespace.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ robertomaliziasquarespace Instagram: @this.is.malice

FA D Y & S A R A H

FA DY & SARAH ABOUT OUR DAY: Our day was focused on being with the people we loved and was surrounded with love and laughter, as well as excitement for the next season as our lives were brought together. Fady and I were long distance while we were dating- I was from a small country town 3 hours outside of Adelaide, and he grew up in Sydney. So our wedding day meant the end a long distance relationship! I had moved all of my things across to Sydney and my last bags were packed, ready to start our lives together in Sydney after the honeymoon. This also meant that our wedding day would bring together friends and family that were two states apart. So we decided to get married in Adelaide, where I was completing my degree at uni- a place in between both families! His family would fly 2 hours to reach Adelaide, and my family would drive 3 hours to get to Adelaide, so for our day, everyone traveled with us!

We also created a Facebook page where we shared flight specials and directions. We included a letter in each of our guests rooms, thanking them for coming and giving them some ideas of places to see while they were in Adelaide. We also invited them to a breakfast buffet with our parents in the morning. I even organised hairdressing friend to be available to do hair for some of the ladies in the morning! We both hired houses for our wedding weekend, as neither of us had houses in Adelaide! This was exciting but took a lot of organisation to find suitable places that were also a reasonable distance from the Church. We loved that our wedding was unique and would be memorable for us and our family and friends. Our day was so fun that it went too fast!

THEME: STYLISH AND ROMANTIC, CLASSIC BUT NATURAL Because we knew how much effort our family Perhaps sums up our wedding theme. Almost every aspect of our wedding reflected the and friends were making to be there to share combination of natural but classy style choices. our day with us, we did as much as we could Even the way I wore my hair reflected thisto make it fun! So, we found a venue for upstyle but natural and soft, to the reception our reception that also had accommodation decor- styled but very romantic with hanging facilities, so that our family and friends could crystal tree centrepieces and delicate pastel go straight up to their room or hang out together afterwards. We sent out Save the Dates coloured sugared almond bombenierres. Our colour palette drew on natural hues- an Island 5 months prior with booking information so they could organise flights and accommodation. paradise colour for the bridesmaids with greens, whites and soft pinks in the flowers, car colours and backdrops for the afternoon.

ATTIRE My dress: I went wedding dress shopping with my Mum and my Maid of honour, my sister. When I tried on this dress at an Essence trunk show I didn’t want to take it off! Fit and flare with incredible detailing and a gorgeous sweetheart neckline- and keyhole back- it was exactly what I wanted. A special plus I discovered after the wedding, was that my dress wasn’t released into the Essence range- it was one of a kind! BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES I wanted something unique for my bridesmaids, something flattering and beautiful. In my search I came across the amazing goddess by nature dress. It flowed and flattered and I had no doubt it would look stunning on each of my bridesmaids. The ‘Isand Paradise’ colour contrasted beautifully with my dress and the natural backdrops we were wanting on the day. Grooms suits: Fady wanted something modern but still traditional, so he chose charcoal coloured suits coupled with bow-ties and buttonholes for each of the groomsmen. He stood out by wearing a white vest and bowtie. They all looked so sharp!

FLOWERS I really wanted flowers that were soft and natural, without being too structured, but still had the elegance of a classic bouquet. Our florist pulled this off beautifully! I asked for pink in my bouquet- it was important for me to have that soft, feminine colour show through somewhere. Each groomsman had a buttonhole that matched the bridesmaids bouquets.

Pastor gave the message, and Fady’s pastor administered the vows- it was lovely. A good friend who wasn’t able to fly to Adelaide to attend the wedding created our Unity Candlesthey were gorgeous.

CEREMONY / CHURCH As neither of us were from Adelaide, we didn’t have a local church there. So, in our search we looked for somewhere that was traditional but beautiful, and in a location where our family and friends could enjoy afterwards. We found St Peter’s Anglican in Glenelg- a gorgeous and popular beach destination in Adelaide.

RECEPTION ENTERTAINMENT / DECORATIONS We wanted our reception to be relaxed, but also for our guests to really enjoy themselves! We provided a photo-booth and we organised to have an acoustic two piece band who played songs we chose during the evening. Both of our personalities came out in the way we organised our reception decor, the natural romance and classy elegance were merged in a room dressed with a stunning hanging chandelier overhanging the dance floor, hanging crystal tree centerpieces and a bridal backdrop featuring of hanging flower balls. Wedding song: Thinking out loud (Ed Sheeran

We wanted our ceremony to be simple but meaningful. So we had two good friends sing a beautiful Christian song; Cornerstone. This song reflected our shared faith and the role that we wanted God to have in our marriage. We are both close to our Pastors, so really wanted both pastors involved in the ceremony, so my

After the ceremony, we made it a priority to have a greeting line, to ensure we could personally thank each of our family members who traveled to attend our wedding.

Our good friend was our MC for the evening, and he was hilarous, he shared memories, made sneaky jokes and laughed with us during the night- our guests loved it!

WHAT WAS EASY Choosing our venues- they seemed to fall in place! WHAT WAS CHALLENGING Organising our reception, because we put so much though and effort into it! We changed the venue room significantly to create a beautiful atmosphere that reflected us as a couple and made sure we provided entertainment and fun for our friends and family! HOW OUR GUESTS REACTED During our honeymoon, we kept seeing photos of our friends and family who were having an absolute ball visiting different places in Adelaide and making a fun weekend of it! We were so happy to see them having so much fun! We had so many comments on our ceremony, and on our reception- on how relaxed but enjoyable they were. Our guests loved the letter in their rooms, and had so much fun being able to spend the day together in their rooms, or going out and visiting different places. IF THE SHOE FITS

FJ O R D E B R I D E

SPRING 2015

IF THE SHOE FITS WORDS | KARA OAKES

YOU’VE SET A DATE, BOOKED THE VENUE, AND FOUND YOUR DREAM DRESS, NOW IT’S TIME FOR THE FUN PART, CHOOSING THE SHOES! SHOES ARE SOMETHING THAT MANY WOMEN SPEND A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY ON AND YOUR WEDDING SHOES SHOULD BE NO EXCEPTION. FINDING THE RIGHT SHOE CAN BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS FINDING THE RIGHT DRESS.

Your first step should be choosing the style of shoe you want, so finding something that goes well with your dress and overall wedding theme is important but don’t feel as if you have to be traditional in your choice. Many brides choose a statement shoe in a colour or print that reflects their personality and adds a pop of colour to their usually white ensemble. Once you have decided on style of shoe you want, start to consider the variables such as type of heel, height, straps, and material. Wedding shoes will be on your feet from start until finish so you will want them to be comfortable and easy to walk in. If you aren’t confident walking in high heels, consider wedges, kitten keels or even flats. Ensure that your feet are comfortable and that you can walk easily in your shoes well before the big day by practicing around the house.

If you are sticking to a tight budget, do not worry, there is an abundance of purse-friendly wedding shoe options out there. Formal shoes are often similar in style and colour to wedding shoes and they are usually a fraction of the price. There are no rules when it comes to wedding shoes for the bride, it’s all up to her personal preference and style, so consider purchasing wedding shoes that could be worn again or are non-traditional such as sandals, flats, coloured or even sneakers. If you still cannot find the perfect shoe for you, there are a number of online stores which allow you to customise your shoe; everything from the height of the heel to the colour. The most important thing for the bride to remember when choosing their wedding shoe is that this is their big day and anything goes. You being happy and comfortable in what shoes you chose is what matter most.

INHALE, EXHALE

INHALE, EXHALE WORDS | MELISSA HIEMANN

WHEN IT COMES TO PERFORMANCE, What is a major symptom that can stop you from completely enjoying the moment of WE ALL HAVE SOME KIND OF walking down the aisle on what should be REACTION. a memorable day? When you aren’t fully present and concentrating it makes it difficult VERY FEW OF US A COOL, CALM to actually capture the day in your mind and AND COLLECTION. ESPECIALLY people often find the day to be a blur if they are WHEN IT COMES TO OUR WEDDING overly anxious about the day. DAY AND PARTICULARLY THE MOMENT YOU KNOW THAT ALL It can it be relentless self talk like…’Is EYES WILL BE ON YOU. everything going right so far? Many thoughts can run through our mind. I hope they have NOT ONLY THE WHOLE BUILD UP TO THE ACTUAL DAY, BUT ALSO THE the ring, is the food going to be of standard for ACTUAL MOMENT THAT YOU GO TO the guests today? Does my makeup look ok, is Aunty Sue’s health ok to get through the day?’. WALK DOWN THE AISLE. All these thoughts can take away from the magic of the day and moment of walking down the aisle. Here are some tips that have worked well with my clients, that you can incorporate while walking down the aisle to be able to recall and fully enjoy every precious moment…

BREATH. IF YOU ARE BREATHING AT A fast high rate, this can cause anxiousness and create a ‘flight or fight’ response in our nervous system which stops us from being relaxed and able to enjoy what we are doing. Consciously slow your breathing down, taking 5 seconds to inhale, the 5 seconds to exhale and breath down to your stomach with your hand resting there. It will calm you down straight naturally.

experience than our mind will expect that and give you the emotions associated with it. Alternatively, we can use this function to our advantage by imagining the best case scenario instead. Visualise walking down the aisle with ease, smiling faces and everything going perfectly well and your biology will respond accordingly - giving you a more pleasant experience.

WRITE IT DOWN If you are running a mental check list, write them down and pass to someone that is helping you. We seem to get overwhelmed easily by thinking too many things at once. When you write them down, you will be pleasantly surprised that their is much less to be done and worry about than previously thought.

SELF CONSCIOUS This is your big day and will all of your and your partners loved ones, you can feel the pressure of all eyes on you and how you look. Have you ever met people that may not be conventionally attractive - but seem to attract everyone in the room with their energy? This is a not well known factor that people already react to (that person had a weird ‘vibe’) for example. Coming up to the wedding, work on self love and your confidence will grow and you will have an attractive glow on the outside on the day. You can do this by taking time for

VISUALISE This is one that I will advise for athletes or people who have a speech coming up, it works perfectly for any kind of performance though. Our mind imagines scenarios in the future automatically. If we create a possible negative

yourself, meditation and various natural healing methods such as hypnotherapy and energy healing. BE PRESENT This is something that is the most powerful and allows you to take in every moment in full joy. If we get stuck in the past or future - it takes us away from the enjoyment of now. A good way to get into the peaceful state is to have self awareness if you are not completely being in the moment (often you will know if you have worry, stress or anxiety). Once you recognise this state then you have the ability to say to say this to yourself to create more presents when you need it. “Right now, in the very moment everything is perfect and I am fine”. Try it now, it is very freeing. To learn more about Melissa’s services and how she can days away from your wedding, visit: www.mindsetreset.com.au

WORDS | BEC FARAH [@BEC2NATURE]

WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LOVE ABOUT SPRING – COLORFUL FLOWERS BLOOMING, FINALLY RUNNING OUTDOORS, SAYING GOODBYE TO WOOLLY SOCKS AND HELLO GORGEOUS SUNSHINE! OH, OF COURSE, IT’S HAYFEVER SEASON.

The last thing you want on the days leading up to and on the day of your wedding is waking up to itchy eyes, a blocked nose and sneezing every 5 seconds. Hayfever (aka Allergic rhinitis) is an allergy to proteins found in the pollen of trees, grasses, some plants, or mold that affect the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes and air passages causing thin clear discharge – hence the runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing! Common triggers of hayfever include mold, dust, trees, grass, flower pollen and animal dander, pollution, cigarette smoke and particles from home renovation. A poor diet can contribute to an excess of mucus produced by the body. Stress may also trigger hayfever as it plays a roll in depressing the immune system. TIPS ON HOW TO MANAGE IT BEFORE THE BIG DAY LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS

Stay indoors as much as possible, particularly after 10am – grasses generally pollinate midday then the wind keeps the pollen floating until it drops to the ground at night.

Avoid mucus-forming foods/drinks – dairy products (not including yoghurt), wheat (found in bread and pasta), refined sugar (found in baked goods, cakes, chocolate, junk food and soft drinks) and alcohol.

Keep windows (including car windows while driving) and doors shut. Use your air conditioner instead. Wear glasses or sunglasses when outdoors to keep the pollen from getting into your eyes. Shower thoroughly, wash your hair and change your clothes when you come home after spending time outside to remove the accumulation of pollen sticking to you during the day – pollen attaches to your skin, hair and clothing, especially on a windy day. Have your lawn mown regularly – before your grass and lovely flowers grow.

Eat non-mucus-forming foods – whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, raw seeds and nuts and cold-pressed oils. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in citrus fruits, apples, berries, grapes and black tea, which acts as an anti-histamine, reducing hayfever symptoms. Bromelain, an enzyme found in the core of pineapples, has been shown to thin mucus and have anti-inflammatory properties, also reducing hayfever symptoms. Drinking 8 glasses of filtered water each day will help thin mucus secretions.

Plain yoghurt and kefir (Turkish yoghurt) contain the probiotics Lactobaccillus Avoid placing your laundry outdoors to dry – acidophilus and bifidus that help promote a pollen collects on the surface of fabrics. healthy gut. There is increase evidence that probiotics can reduce hayfever tendencies. Add Use a good quality air-purifier and filter in your 2 tablespoons of yoghurt or kefir to your cereal home – this can help eliminate viruses, bacteria, or smoothies. mold, pollen, dust and pollutants in the air. Placing a few drops of eucalyptus, lavender and Increasing omega-3 fatty acids helps reduce peppermint oil in an essential oil diffuser is also inflammation associated with hayfever. Take effective for removing allergens in the air. 3 grams of a good quality fish oil daily or 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil for a vegetarian Keep pets either inside or outside – not both! option. Eat a handful of raw nuts and seeds Dogs and cats can pick up pollen on their fur each day. and bring it indoors. For red, itchy eyes, place a slice of cucumber Avoid tobacco smoke including secondhand over each eye. Rotate this with steeped, cooled smoke – this irritates the eyes and lungs. black tea bags and place directly on each eyelid – these help reduce inflammation around the eyes. 92

MELBOURNE-BASED BRIDAL DESIGNER CATHLEEN JIA SHARES HER TOP SIX PICKS FOR ELEGANT AND VINTAGE-INSPIRED VEILS AND HOW TO WEAR THEM IN SPRING:

LORETTA

MERCEDES

FREYA

Loretta is one of our most popular headpieces due to its delicate style and versatility. Not restricted by hair style, you can wear Loretta at the front across the forehead for a boho glam look or at the back draping across a loose bun. We even had some brides wear this on the side wrapping a soft side wave; it looks so elegant and oozes 1920’s glamour.

If you are after something with a bit more sparkles, the Mercedes is the perfect piece. A modern take on the 1920’s head jewel, Mercedes can be worn with featured jewels on side or back depending on hair style. This is another versatile piece, as it allows you to sit it at your forehead or like a headband.

This is one of our very first head jewels, a classic in our design house and still loved by many brides. The bold centre pieces and side crystal chains makes the Freya a statement accessory for a glamorous bride. There is a misconception this piece needs to be worn with a centre part or no hair part. But I have styled this with hair down and side part and works beautifully.

Although head jewels are a popular choice, veils are still being worn by many brides, especially classic style veils .The Serafina is a beautifully hand beaded lace Mantilla veil with a modern take. There is something so elegant and sexy about the lace framing a bride’s radiant face.

Set free your inner Exotic Goddess with the Allegra head jewel. This head jewel sure makes a statement with beautiful hand beaded centre piece and drape crystal chains. Best worn with hair down, the Allegra is perfect for a glamorous boho bridal style.

GLOWING BRIDES

G L O W I N G B R I D E S WORDS | BELINDA HUGHES

WHEN PLANNING YOUR BRIDAL DAY INCLUDING MAKEUP ARTIST, PHOTOGRAPHER AND GOWN FOR THE ‘JUST RIGHT’ FEEL, HAVING A FLAWLESS BASE IS IMPERATIVE TO THE ABOVE TURNING OUT PERFECT. STRESS LEADING UP YOUR WEDDING CAN SOMETIMES CAUSE HAVOC WITH YOUR SKIN, TURNING THIS INTO A PHYSICAL CHALLENGE. HERE ARE MY TOP TIPS FOR FLAWLESS SKIN: [FROM TOP TO BOTTOM]

PLAN AHEAD – See your beauty salon or get a recommendation for a great skin therapist at least 4 months before your wedding and get a treatment plan. There are plenty of salons and spas stocking professional natural products now. Glowing skin is not an accident! PUMPKIN PEELS – Often mostly made up of pumpkin pulp, high quality professional products that are quite natural as pumpkin is naturally high in vitamin A. Doing a course of peels will correct pigmentation and dull skin giving you that smooth base ready for makeup. ORGANIC PEELS – Many professional companies like Eminence Organics, Organic Spa, Sodashi and Uspa offer in salon only treatments using potent fruit based AHA and Enzyme mixes that leave the skin smooth and hydrated. HOMECARE – A home routine is a must as 70% of skincare is homecare. Purchase a routine of cleanser, toner, exfoliate, masque, serum and moisturiser. This routine will get your skin prepped and into happy habits which will help prevent breakouts and give you a smooth plump complexion. LOOK AT INGREDIENTS – If you are looking for a great organic product but not sure what’s marketing and what’s real, read the label. Organic products will have fewer ingredients in them and will also often have common names listed instead of looking like a chemical experiment. Use ‘The Chemical Maze’ app to double-check anything you’re not sure of.

SHOP ONLINE – Some of the best premium organic skin care is being sold via online outlets like Nourished Life, Beautiful Because and I Am Natural. If you find beauty salons intimidating these retailers will happily give you advice and even have sample packs for you to try before you commit to a whole routine. They often stock cult, hard to find products from overseas, you just have to know where to look. Need more advice?
