HOW DO YOU HAVE THE BEST ADVENTURE ON THE SMALLEST BUDGET? EASY. 1. Travel when no one else wants to. Between December and February, summer warms up the chilly New Zealand air and tourists come to the islands in droves. In Australia and New Zealand, children break for holidays in late November and parents take advantage of the gap to take their children away. Go on holiday in autumn or winter, when everyone else is snuggled under their blankets. Flights and accommodation will be cheaper and the lines to tourist attractions won’t be as long.

Budget airlines habitually email out special fares and if you can afford to be flexible about your travel dates, your flights to and around New Zealand could be remarkably cheap. 4. Travel by bus. Yes, that’s right, public transport. Instead of renting a car in New Zealand (paying not only rental fees but international drivers licence charges, petrol and additional insurance); jump on a bus reach your travel destinations. It will add a bit of travel time if you are venturing long distance but will ultimately save you coins travelling from place to place. As an added bonus, it minimises your chance of getting lost on the road. 5. Prepay for the big adventures. New Zealand attracts adventure tourists who want to bungee jump off bridges, skydive from planes, trek down caves and raft down cold rivers. Adventures like these do not come cheap. If you book an adventure when you book your flights and pay for it well in advance, you won’t have to budget for it. You might be able to get a discount if you have a student card, book in advance or do it in a group.

6. Drink at happy hour and don’t buy all your meals out. Have drinks before, not after, dinner when the New Zealand bars are offering up beverages at happy hour prices. Instead of buying every meal out, stock up at supermarkets and bakeries as you travel across the islands. The best thing about staying in a backpackers or an airbnb is availability of a kitchen. Take advantage of it.

9. Always ask about discounts. If you have a student or concession card, remember to call and ask with a cheery smile about the potential discount rates for concession holders. Can you get a discount if you pay the balance now? What about if you pay cash? If you don’t ask – you will literally never know. 10. Keep an eye on the exchange rate and change some cash over to New Zealand dollars when the rate is good. This has two benefits - you will be getting the cash at a very good exchange rate and, added bonus, this cash will be in a form you cannot spend.

ACHIEVING THE THINGS THAT WE DESIRE IN THIS LIFE CAN VERY MUCH LEAD US DOWN A ROAD OF ACQUIRING CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS AND TRAITS THAT CAN SOMETIMES NOT BE BENEFICIAL TO US IN THE LONG RUN. THIS IS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE CAN HAVE SINGULAR VISION WHEN IT COMES TO ACHIEVEMENT AND SOMETIMES THIS CAN LEAD TO TERRIBLE IMBALANCES IN ONES PERSONALITY. WE HAVE ALL COME ACROSS PEOPLE WHO IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER DO THINGS IN LIFE BECAUSE OF SOME GIGANTIC OVERCOMPENSATION IN THEIR WAY OF BEING WHICH IS A SUBCONSCIOUS ATTEMPT TO CAPITALISE OVER A MAJOR PERIOD OF GRIEF AND SUFFERING.

If you can understand what is being noted here, you can begin to attain an awareness within yourself that life and all its varying possibilities can tend to push us into arenas which are not for our highest good or betterment for those who surround us. Many of you have even been privy to teachings and to articles that talk about techniques and paths through which you can learn to better yourself and to develop yourself in whatever area you wish to succeed in, whether it be your health or your career or love life, so many suggestions out their push us in directions that can sometimes fail to accomplish what we first set out to achieve, which in totality is balance. What really is balance and how can we embody it throughout our lives? Is it really possible to achieve it in reality because many of us these days in actual fact are really just surviving and trying to cope with how life is for us. What you must truly understand is that your mindset is key, the mind in actual fact is the core mechanism behind everything, it sets the energy for your daily life and determines how balanced your brain really is, based fundamentally on your set of belief systems which paint your inner world. Take for instance an average Joe who wakes up every morning and neglects to have a simple breakfast and instead will forsake the most important meal of the day and rush to work to only be met with a cloud of tasks and responsibilities he really does not want to take on because his job is absolutely unfulfilling to him. This my friends is most people’s lives, we cannot see that we are the cause to our own suffering because we cannot see how simple bad habits on a continual daily basis can really impact us in the long run.

The most practical suggestion I could make to you all who are reading this article is to change 3 habits that do not serve you - the first would be one morning habit which does not serve your health, the second would be one financial habit which does not serve you monetarily, and the final being one social habit which does not serve your energy. In thinking about these bad habits which you have taken on, note as well that through change which is very difficult at first, you will actually experience a heightening in your minds state of balance as well as in your body’s state of harmony and health. I would seriously suggest this to all of you. I have experienced this personally myself and have overcome some bad habits which were causing me some distress - having overcome them now I am seeing myself in a new light and many more things are opening up for me on so many levels. Try this for yourself, you will not be disappointed. Spirituality at best must be practised on a practical level and in doing so will strengthen you in ways you never thought possible. As we almost close the door to winter 2015 from jackets, trench, heavy colourful scarfs and knits, we say Hello to Spring Summer 15/16. With a new season comes new trends and new sense of style.

Every so often, whether its a change in the weather or little monotony setting in, we effortlessly want to renew our wardrobe as this season kick start we are taking you back to the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. From Bohemian influence done luxuriously. The attention is on soft sophisticated fabrics such as delicate lace dresses, breezy cheesecloth and soft suede A-line skirts. The colour palette is fresh and neutral, yellow and of course roomy denim. Autumn may have brought us roper plaids, but for spring it’s all about the tiny check. The must-have off-the-shoulder trend is showcased in fluttery dresses and tops, while tailored suede skirt makes the perfect style statement for the transition into spring styling. Yet head-to-toe white, yep it isn’t about the rules of when you can wear all-white its about how you wear them with mixing texture, multiple pieces and teaming various shades.

WITH THE LINES BETWEEN FITNESS AND FASHION BLURRING AS THE DAYS GOES BY, IT’S NO WONDER THAT HUNTR HAS ACHIEVED SUCH SUCCESS IN SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. SITTING WITH EMILY HIGHFIELD WE FIND WHERE HUNTR COMES FROM AND WHERE ITS GOING IN THE FUTURE.

WHAT INSPIRED HUNTR? My husband Adam Edwards and I, originally wanted to create a women’s fashion label, but when we caught up with our other business partner, Simon Hill, he mentioned he wanted to do a women’s sportswear label, so we decided to merge the two and do a fashionfocused active wear label… and that’s how Huntr was born.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE STYLE OF THE CONTINUUM COLLECTION? I called the first collection, ‘Continuum’, as it is about continuous line and form throughout the capsule. The Huntr aesthetic is minimal and monochrome, with a sport luxe feel. For this particular collection, I also injected a hint of pastel pink across a couple of the styles.

We also offer two colour-ways of our Puffer Vest, another crowd favourite. There is the “Track Series” with our Pullover, Jogger Short and Crop Top. We also have some leather-look Run Shorts and a mesh stripe Sport Tank.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU GET HUNTR OF THE GROUND AND AVAILABLE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS? To set the business up it took just over a year. This includes the legal set-up of the company, sourcing a library of fabrics with the factories and going through the design and fit process for the first collection. We also had to set-up a freight account, bank, accounting platform, distribution warehouse, website and social media platforms. DID YOU HAVE FUN PUTTING TOGETHER HUNTR? BECAUSE WE LOVE WHAT YOU’VE PUT TOGETHER! I absolutely loved it - I love the creative design process, doing the research and piecing the collection together like a puzzle. It’s so fun seeing it evolve from sketch to finished product. Then seeing your customers wear the product and receiving such a positive response. It’s really satisfying! I also really love the ongoing business development, bouncing ideas around with my other partners and finding our brand’s aesthetic and voice. WHERE DO YOU HOPE HUNTR LEADS? WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE NEXT COLLECTION? In the very near future we will be shipping globally, as we’ve been getting a lot of interest from overseas. For each Collection I aim to better the last, which is what excites me about being a designer. There are so many possibilities and with each collection comes a blank canvas, so you can take your designs wherever your imagination lets you. WHERE DO WE FIND HUNTR? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? My start in the industry was slow... I started a store that sold unique and unusual product to people that made their own jewellery and I ran workshops teaching people the art of jewellery making. I enjoyed sourcing interesting beads that were not widely circulated in this country. The more I sourced product and taught people the more my own skills and designs began to emerge. My knowledge grew, my designs began to take shape and I found myself entering the industry little by little. WHY FOCUS IN BEADS, WHAT WAS IT ABOUT BEADS THAT YOU WANTED TO WORK WITH OVER FABRIC? Beads gave me a far more unique and individual approach to the fashion world. What I make was not being done in the fashion world here in Australia. The beads I use, the manner in which I create and the unique antique and vintage components that I choose to put in my work are often one of a kind but are contemporary enough that they are still high fashion and art while maintaining an extremely high quality.

This does translate to my pieces because in many of them is often incorporated a piece that is anything up to 100 years old. To have lasted that long and still be able to last that many years again it has outlasted fashion and becomes a piece that is timelessly stylish and contemporary. I design apiece also to be worn often, taking the owner from day to night, wearing it with jeans and a t-shirt to a high fashion occasion.

The women that wear my jewellery are confident women who are at ease with themselves. Young and older women who are not governed by a brand but Women that understand and appreciate individuality, uniqueness and truly appreciate handcrafted artisan quality that has a contemporary fashionable appeal. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR STYLE? Classic with a modern edge perhaps... and a touch of glamour! WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING ON?

“IN ONE SENTENCE, IT IS THE LOVE CHILD BETWEEN A SNOW BOARD AND AN OFF-ROAD BUGGY”. THE WORDS OF BAJA BOARDS CO-FOUNDER GEORGE LI WHEN FJORDE CAUGHT UP WITH THE MELBOURNE ENGINEER TO TALK ABOUT HIS COMPANY AND THEIR RADICAL, MODERN TAKE ON THE NEXT BIG THING IN EXTREME SPORTS.

Ever wondered what would happen if you were to mix motor sport with traditional board sports? No? Well lucky for us there are dreamers out there, like the team at Baja Boards, who do all the wayward pondering for us and the results, are as genius as they are terrifying. The Baja Board is an all-terrain, electric skate board, the first of its kind and it was conjured up right here in Melbourne. A massive 12 kilowatts of power carry the 15kg board at speeds of up to 50kmh, however stability and safety are two distinct features of the Baja Board and part of what make it such an intriguing design. “Incredibly, it is actually more stable than your traditional skate board” Says George Li, talking to Fjorde about his company and the birth of the Baja Board, the first of its kind to be commercially available. “The boards themselves have independent suspension which one would closely associated with buggies. Each wheel is independently steered and the steering is done by leaning so it is very similar to a snow board in that sense”, he said. James Murphy (creator of the Bajaboard) originally had the idea back in 2003, in high school, though without the practical know-how in terms of development, the idea dropped out of mind. Once qualified engineers, the pair wasted little time in getting their idea off the ground. So to speak.

“We went off to university and then back in 2011, James picked it back up as a garage hobby before building the first proof of concept in 2013. It got some attention and we decided it was a worthwhile business pursuit”, he said. Both George and James are avid skaters and have been for some time, but it is the stability of the Baja Board is what makes it unique and luckily for most, suitable for non-skaters. “I hadn’t touched a skate board for probably 10 years before I tried the first one (Baja Board) and within 30 minutes, I was cruising around at speeds of up to probably 30kph”, he said. In terms of terrain, the Baja Board has no preference with its 4WD feature making it capable of navigating virtually anywhere you desire. However for first timers looking to build a bit of confidence, stick to the open grass fields. “It depends on the ride path but as long as there is no debris larger than say the size of a tennis ball, the board will go over it comfortably. Grass is ideal not for the board but for the rider, if you do manage to fall over its nice and soft”, he said. The Bajaboard has been a much anticipated product after it received the Best Alternative Vehicle award, at the 2014, Melbourne Electric Vehicle Expo.

“At the moment we are doing the first production batch for people that pre-ordered last year and that batch has been all sold out. We have just started to gather a customer list for a second batch will happen later on this year. At this stage it is mostly people contacting us directly”, he said. Baja, pronounced Ba-ha, is perhaps not the first name that would pop into one’s head when thinking of a name for an all-terrain weapon like this, however it is one that fits the personality of its designers perfectly. “Oh yeah we had people throwing up things like ‘Extreme board’ and things like that but we wanted something a little bit more understated”, he said. “We are Aussies we like to play it down a bit so we took inspiration from the Baja1000 Rally in California, which is arguably the toughest off road race in the world and given we want to be the toughest off road board in the world, we figured the name could pay homage to that in a sense”. Currently working as an incubator program with Australian Sports Technology Network, Bajaboards are steadily raising capital so the board can be taken into mass production with the team eying up 2016-17 as the years for mass growth. R O B I N A TO W N CENTRE TR ANSFORMED I N TO C A N VA S B Y I N T E R N AT I O N A L LY R EN OWN ED A RTI ST ROBINA TOWN CENTRE INVITES THE GOLD COAST COMMUNITY TO EXPERIENCE AN INSTALLATION BY ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST STREET ARTISTS – RONE

Robina Town Centre was pleased to present to the Gold Coast community a unique art installation created by iconic Australian and internationally renowned street artist, RONE. The mural spans a massive 90 metres wide and 8 metres high. Known for his unique, stylised images of his female ‘muse’, RONE began his career during the burgeoning Melbourne street art scene in the 2000s, and is now represented by galleries in London, Berlin and New York. Inspired by the Gold Coast community, RONE’S original mural features fresh produce and large washes of vibrant, electric colours including aqua and coral. “This mural is more energised and upbeat than some of my previous work in order to truly reflect the spirit of the Gold Coast community,” said RONE.

These days RONE’S work is found as often in galleries as it is on the streets. His work has been aquisitioned by the National Gallery of Australia, commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria to work with Jean Paul Gaultier and shown by galleries including Stolen Space in London, White Walls in San Francisco, Urban Nation in Berlin and Allouche Gallery in New York.

Finding the friction point between beauty and decay is a thread that runs through much of RONE’S work.
