HELLO

The Firestation Centre for Arts & Culture Issue 18 Spring/Summer Programme May - August 2014

HELLO HELLO

We get quite a few rumours that whizz around us here at the ol’ FS, we’re a bit of a rumour magnet to be sure. Some of them are fairly close to the truth, some of them are pretty far fetched and some of them are so weird we wish we’d thought of them first! But this one, the one about us opening a new venue, the one about us getting bigger and bigger, is actually properly TRUE!! (not to be confused with the similar “they’re moving”, “they’re closing” and “Dan’s leaving” rumours ;-) ). Yes indeed, after years of planning, lots of dreaming and a skip full of obscenely early starts and yawningly late nights (not the jumping around ones that we quite like), Prime Studios is a real thing that we do real stuff in! BOOM! There’s more about it on page 11, so I won’t say any more here. But I will just sneak in how excited I am about our future there and that there are loads of people we owe a ton of thanks to for helping make it happen, not the least the Royal Borough for their continued support and enthusiasm for what we do. Thanks everybody! So on to our great summer programme, with a vast, exciting and utterly amazeballs four months worth of cultural zip-a-dee-do-dah! Highlights this time include dub-tastic trance from Mountain of Love (p.06), stunning flamenco music and dance from Sentimiento (p.08), brilliant Edinburgh comedy previews (p.12), Big Picnic faves and hi-octane Americana trio Gordie MacKeeman & His Rhythm Boys (p.19), brand new theatre with Belle & Sebastian’s Catherine Ireton in “Leaving Home Party” (p.20) and or course the mighty Big Picnic (p.24)! Happy sunshine culture fiends, Dan

Expect to meet curious creatures of all shapes and sizes: from performing fleas, skateboarding snails and gymnastic gerbils to an irritable alligator, an over-excited elephant, and a very intelligent orang-utan! Learn about how animals evolved, how their amazing adaptations help them survive in the wild, and how animals can help us learn more about ourselves. After all, we’re all related if you go back far enough! Using puppets, comedy, slapstick and live music - plus lots of amazing natural history facts - Squashbox Theatre will uncover the mysteries of the animal kingdom. (No animals were harmed in the making of this show. But several puppets were mildly traumatised.)

Following their acclaimed tour of The Trench, award-winning Theatre Company, Les Enfants Terribles tour with their new show, adapted for the stage with Bristol based company, Pins and Needles Productions. Inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock, Ernest and the Pale Moon is a spine-chilling tale of obsession and murder from the team behind the multi award-winning shows The Trench, The Terrible Infants’ and The Vaudevillains and is written by Oliver Lansley, directed by James Seager and designed by Zoe Squire. The show previously toured in 2010 where it was described by The Telegraph as “gloriously gothic” by The Metro as “fresh as a new wound” and by The Stage as a “highly atmospheric piece of gothic story-telling, channelling Edgar Allan Poe and Henry James, producing a compelling and macabre account of obsession, immurement and murder.” It was previously directed by Emma Earle and was nominated for a Total Theatre Award. Ernest Hemel spends his days watching a beautiful young woman, Gwendoline, who lives in the apartment opposite. Upon seeing her with another man he is thrown into a jealous rage and driven to murder, though all is not what it may at first seem and slowly Ernest’s guilt sends him on a spiralling descent into madness. The piece contains narrative twists and turns, live music, inventive design and physical storytelling to provide a thrilling and terrifying experience.

MOUNTAIN OF LOVE (EX-ALABAMA 3)

TEA-TIME COWBOY

Auditorium Tickets: £10 standing / £12 seated

Auditorium Tickets: £5

Deep soul, electronic funk and old-school techno!

Everybody’s talking about the maelstrom that is Will Franken!

Heavy, dubbed up, joyous psychedelic-electronic-funk, with a slab of old school techno and some deep, swampy blues, from 2/3 of the legendary and irrepressible Alabama 3. Mountain of Love was formed when Piers and Eddie, 2 of the 3 founder members of Alabama 3, writers of The Sopranos theme tune and Alabama’s classic Woke Up This Morning, left to do what they do best - making serious groove based dance music.

Will (a firm Windsor and Laughing Coyote favourite) has penned a semi-autobiographical absurdist satire; TeaTime Cowboy. It’s about Billy Greenbriar, a small town American boy on his journey to the big city of London. Filled with hilarity and typical Franken sketches and absurdist observations, this will be one of the comedy highlights of the season. “I cannot remember one moment of this show that wasn’t funny. I am still laughing. . .practically perfect comedy. . .” H H H H - The Scotsman “Simply hilarious. . .” H

STUART LAWS ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT STOP, EVER, UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD (1HR SHOW)

His wife’s parents have moved in. Permanently. Not so much a show as a person getting out of the house. But fear not, Wozniak has more show business in his moustache than he does in his little finger. Where do you keep yours? Let’s find out if we get around to it.

Back by popular demand is the revamped, supercharged and thoroughly kickin’ Hitchin’s Lab; an open-stage event where you take the stage!

‘Just could be the new comedy hero.’ - Time Out If.comedy Newcomer nominee 2008 Time Out’s Best New Act of the Year 2008 Chortle Award’s Best Newcomer nomination 2009

A fantastic free open stage night for all art forms, Hitchin’s invites all and any performers to get on the stage: poetry, music, a monologue, stand-up comedy or anything else! Performance slots are all through the night, so to get your music out there, try out some new comedy material, show off your latest dance routine or fancy performing your favourite monologue, get in touch! For more information and to apply, please contact Pete via pete@firestationartscentre.com

Loft Tickets: £5 Twenty nine year old Stuart is trying to embrace the fact that his attempts to blend in with the crowd have worked all too successfully and he is now a perpetual “omega male” or “little spoon”. An energetic and compelling master of audience interaction, Stuart’s spontaneous performances see him creating a perversely endearing air of comedic chaos in a show about ornithology, Center Parcs, Terminator, milkshakes, The Bourne Supremacy, the three 9/11s, colour blindness and Hawaii Five-0.

Terrics are a feisty quartet who rattle the South UK live circuit with their Pop Punk infused sound. They’ve been compared to bands like The Starting Line, Taking Back Sunday & The Get Up Kids and since hitting the live music scene at the start of the year Terrics have played a number of high profile gigs, including; Headlining BBC Introducing Stage at Reading’s Oakford Social Club, Caversham Festival, supporting the American rock band Kingsfoil at Reading University and getting to the final 5 bands for the nationwide competition Rock the House. From the ashes of past local pop-punk favourites Muffin, Japan4 and The Jim Band, come Slough quartet and main support band Tindall. Boasting the best looking bass player punk has to offer, Tindall play pop-punk the way it was always meant to be played - fast, loud and catchy. Musically they have been likened to Weezer, Alkaline Trio and The Ataris, as can be heard on their debut EP Things Will Never Be The Same Again, now available on Spotify. Additional support comes from Oxford based four piece Tenth Listen and The Makarov Scheme - the first outing for this young local punk-trio.

Prime Studios - in a fantastic unused office space at Ward Royal on Alma Road - has office and studio spaces for artists and cultural projects, supported on our Prime programme with 12 months mentoring and help. It’s very exciting to make a new home for some exceptional people and ideas. As well as some more space for smaller classes - creative writing, theatre skills and the like - Prime Studios is also home to Lemonade Gallery, an innovative contemporary art gallery representing five of the most progressive and provocative artists working in the UK and Europe today. Lemonade disrupts the traditional art gallery model, making the gallery experience as exciting and engaging as the work it shows. Limited edition t-shirts and digital downloads sit alongside prints and paintings. Innovative product displays mean you can get up close to the work and with music playing there’s a real sense of energy and life. Add to that a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and you’ve got a gallery you can connect with that makes engaging with contemporary art really exciting. “We’ve been looking for the right site for some time” says our MD Dan Eastmond “and we now have a terrific building on loan from RBWM which allows us to invest further in new and exciting artists, ideas and cultural operators” Check our website and the class pages here for brand new classes at Prime Studios, and check out lemonadegallery.com for latest news, opening times and events at Lemonade Gallery. Participants are invited to bring along their own work for discussion and produce a piece of writing over the course of the day.

ALFIE MOORE

CASE HARDIN (PLUS SUPPORT)

Auditorium Tickets: £12

Basement Studio Tickets: £6 / £5 conc & Members

Former Humberside Police Sergeant turned stand-up comedian Alfie Moore is tasering his way through the comedy world, arresting audiences with stories of life on the beat that are institutionally funny. His humorous insight into the life of a police officer has resulted in TV and radio appearances on Comic Relief, BBC Radio 4, The Wright Stuff, Sky News and many more. Alfie Moore’s three Edinburgh Festival shows have resulted in several glowing reviews in both the broadsheets and from fellow comedians.

Much-loved UK band Case Hardin, fronted by enigmatic songwriter and vocalist Pete Gow, add a Windsor date to their current tour, showcasing songs from previous albums and their most recent release, PM, voted Q Magazines Roots Album Of The Month 2013.

You have the right to remain silent but you won’t help but laugh. “Brilliantly funny… Genuinely hilarious” - David Mitchell “A proper grown-up’s comic” - The Scotsman “Very funny... lots of well-crafted jokes and a large dash of gallows police humour” - The Telegraph

Case Hardin are all about the story and the telling of that story. Gow’s writing has been increasingly picking up critical praise (‘aching lyrical genius’, ‘one of our foremost storytelling songwriters’) and in concert his songs also carry the power of a band continually in the service of those songs. Case Hardin head out in any manner of musical configuration and each night the songs are different - they have to be... framed and pitched for the band, for the audience, for the mood, for the hell of it and often all four Plus support TBA.

INE BEAT MAGAZ

The Firestation Centre for Arts & Culture Issue 18 Spring/Summer Programme May - August 2014

A short interview with

Models For Every now and again at Beat Magazine HQ something drops into our inbox that we just weren’t expecting. Something that makes us go “Hmm, that’s interesting”, something that makes us ponder for a moment whether we’ve come across something like it before, or something that causes a little smile to creep across our collective (and immensely attractive) faces as our way of thinking shifts just a little. A short note from Models For was one of those moments, a little hello from out of the blue that made us sit up, and resulted in this short interview...oh and our picture editor was very happy too ;-)

16

Hi, can you introduce yourself? My name is Victoria and I’m the campaign manager for Models For - a small charity based in Bolton that helps children from all over the UK. Our models travel around the UK raising money by attending events - from football matches to cage fights and music festivals as well as doing photo shoots and features in magazines and for websites and radio, to raise awareness for our campaign and to get as many events booked in as possible! We’ve worked at some massive events over the past year. We covered lots of the MMA events, the Amir Khan fight in Sheffield, the Price v Thompson fight in Liverpool, we supplied the girls for the Enfusion Live fight at the Indigo2 in London and we even had a few girls at the Sunrise 2 Sunset festival in Blackpool. At the fighting events the girls offer there services as ring girls for the events and then

during the interval and at the end of each event they then collect any donations for the charity. How did you come to be involved in Modelsfor? Models For was actually my concept. After attending a few charity balls with some of my model friends I really wanted to do something different that hadn’t been done, to raise money for the children’s charities that really needed help raising money! I sat down for a few days going over all different ideas and then eventually came up with Models For Campaign. I put out a casting to find some models to join the campaign and in February 2013 we had our first photo shoot. Since then more and more models have been involved with the campaign, but we still have a lot of the original models, which is really nice! We see ourselves as a little family now!

Which charities are you raising money for and why? We set out to raise money for different childrens charities and so far have managed to help around five, but at the minute we are solely raising money for the childrens charity Wipe Your Tears. It is such a wonderfull charity and the people involved are so nice that we really enjoy being able to help them in such a massive way! This year we’ve pledged to raise £30,000 and are just about to reach the £5,000 mark. How many models are involved now? We currently have twenty models involved with the campaign, but we’re holding interviews right now and will hopefully take on another five new models to help cover the demand! What sort of reaction have you had? The reaction has been amazing, we’re blown away by how much support we’re getting

Box Office: 01753 866 865 info@firestationartscentre.com www.firestationartscentre.com

and how much money we’ve raised! It’s been a dream come true for everyone involved. The figures speak for themselves, since we started we’ve raised nearly £20,000. We’re attending events every weekend and event organisers are booking our girls time and time again! The models are not just amazing models and gorgeous, but they’re all lovely girls and everyone is really happy with everything we do! Ring Girls are usually seen but not heard, how have people responded to you’re having an agenda? Most people have been really great and obviously we have managed to raise a lot of money! But as is the nature of the business we’ve had a few words with some rude people, but that’s to be expected in an environment fuelled by alcohol and testosterone! Then again, all of the girls know how to handle themselves and the security staff at all the events make sure they keep a close eye on us, which is always lovely! Do you think that the all-female nature of the charity makes it different? I definitely think that the fact we are all females makes a difference, It certainly helps with the collections. Most of the events we attend are male dominated environments, which means they they are more easily approached by a woman. It also makes them more generous, I think. It feels like there is a female empowerment message in your work. Do you feel that?

Definitely. I think we have taken something that some people view as a bit seedy and we have totally given it a re vamp! I’ve definitely felt a difference in the way people approach us at events from the start of the campaign to now! People know what we are doing and that we are only there for the children and I believe it has given a new spin on the industry! We feel empowered to be able to do something so amazing, and to help so many brave children really gives you a buzz! How do you see the charity growing in the future? I just see us taking on more and more models and hopefully organising more and more events. We’re planning to arrange charity auctions and other types of events such as fashion shows in the future. If every year we can raise more than the last then that will make me a happy woman! Favourite moment so far? It would have to be at Christmas when we did a toy drive for all of the children we’d helped over the year! It was amazng to be able to drop off all the prezzies we’d donated and collected! It’s has brought us really close together as a group of women. We are all extremely close, not just a random group of models, but really good friends! We support each other in ever aspect of our lives and it’s great to be a part of this and to have gained so many new friends!! I cant wait to see what this year has to offer for the campaign! You mentioned feeling closer as a group of women as a result of the campaign. Is

the work otherwise lonely/isolated and what do you think has changed? I think the modelling industry and ring girling can be quite bitchy and cold at times, which does make it sometimes isolating and lonely. Some of the girls in the industry are quite false, which I guess is why some of the girls in the campaign come and go whilst others have stuck with us. It’s really nice that we have managed to find such a good bunch of girls. Everyone is really helpful, but also just very humble, and that’s very rare in this industry! When we find a new girl like that we grab on to her and help her as much as we can! I was reading an interesting article in Sunday Times Style recently about positive messages for young girls. Modelling is often seen as presenting a superficial value system to young girls (I’m not saying this is necessarily correct), your campaign reveals that there is of course more under the surface, but doesn’t seek to change any existing stereotypes and assumptions. What are your thoughts on this?

INE BEAT MAGAZ

look like the images on the shelves. The end product is made up from what the editors perceive as beautiful, and this is what’s most harmful to young women. Many people don’t actually understand what true modelling is and how demanding it is! You have to eat well and look after your body and your face as well as making sure you’re in great shape. The art of modelling itself knowing your angles - how best to position your body - is something that takes time and experience to learn! I know, and have always known, that there is a lot under the surface of every model and hopefully our campaign can bring this awareness to the general public and help young girls see that there is more to the industry than just having your picture taken. To be a great model you also have to be a great person! You can follow Models For on Twitter at @models_for or email them at models_for@hotmail.co.uk

I’m not sure that it’s the modelling itself that presents a superficial value system to young girls. Personally, I believe that it’s the air brushing and re-touching that warps and alters young girls values and sense of self. A lot of young girls admire the stars and models who they see printed in the magazines, and compare themselves to the pictures that they see. But of course the truth of the situation is that the models and stars themselves never have and never will

HEAVY METAL – A HISTORY* Auditorium Tickets: £10 / £9 conc / £8 Members *for people who don’t necessarily like heavy metal† but if you do, you’ll really like it, we promise.

A hilariously kick-arse tour through heavy metal by the UK’s foremost metal-head stand-up comedian. Want to learn how to headbang? Always wondered what happens in a moshpit? Keen to learn the difference between blackened thrash and grindcore? Did you know: • Any Old Iron by Harry Champion was the first heavy metal record • When Judas Priest singer Rob Halford, writer of the song Hell Bent For Leather, Ram It Down, Delivering The Goods and Breaking The Law came out as gay in the mid-90s the metal community was shocked. They later expressed surprise at the defecatory habits of woodland bears and the religious inclination of the Pope. • It takes the average metal-head 10 minutes longer to get ready due to their all-black wardrobe • The New Zealand All-Blacks are a rugby team and have nothing to do with heavy metal. • Satan has all the best tunes. (Though their second album is patchy.) WARNING: This show will contain references to the musical genre known as heavy metal, not a loosely scientific defined subset of elements that exhibit metallic properties. ‘Comedic brilliance’ - Time Out “Andrew O’Neill is like comedy ball-lightning. Fast, electrifying and even funnier than the misfortunes of others” - Alan Moore

Seeing what we expect to see By Warwick Cairns

There was a picture that appeared on the front page of a national newspaper these past few weeks. It was a close-up of a child’s face, beneath the headline “BRITAIN, 2014”. A girl of about six or seven, she must have been, this child. And she didn’t look very happy at all. Furrowed brow. Tears welling in her eyes. A little trickle of liquid snot (sorry) beginning to run down from one nostril. And her mouth twisted into a picture of misery.

The problem? Food, it seemed. Or the lack of it these days, and the rise of food banks and food parcels. The result of ‘Food Poverty,’ as they say. Which is what you have when you’re too poor to afford food. As opposed to just “poverty.” Which is – well, I don’t know, something else I imagine. Maybe in normal poverty you can afford a bit of food, but not other things. And maybe in food poverty you can afford all sorts of other things – but just not food, for some reason or other. But I digress. Because, you see, the problem turned out to be more than just a problem with food. The problem turned out to be a problem with the photo itself. Which turned out to have been taken not in “Britain, 2014”, as you might reasonably have expected - given the

Box Office: 01753 866 865 info@firestationartscentre.com www.firestationartscentre.com

headline - and not even in a food bank of any kind. It turned out to have been taken in San Francisco five years earlier. And the child turned out to have been the photographer’s own daughter, Anne. It also turned out that she was crying because of a worm that she was playing with in the local park. She’d picked it up and named it ‘Flower’ and made it a little house. But when her back was turned, Flower decided it had had enough and crawled away. And her father had his camera on him, and captured the shot and uploaded the image to Flickr, the photosharing site. From which the newspaper lifted it it. So that was something of a problem, given the way it was subsequently presented. But there was actually a deeper problem still with the picture. Let’s do a little quiz, to flex our problemspotting muscles. An aeroplane with a German pilot carrying French holidaymakers suffers an engine failure and crashes in the Italian Alps, close to the Swiss border where a dialect known as Romansch is widely spoken. Where do they bury the survivors – and what language do they use on the gravestone? The answer, of course, is that they don’t bury the survivors at all, because the survivors aren’t dead. The story, if you fell for it, works by setting up expectations that lead you to process the bits you expect to hear “Where did they bury…” and to ‘screen out’ the bits that don’t fit your expectations “…the survivors.” A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest, as Simon & Garfunkel put it.

INE BEAT MAGAZ

Got that? Now, back to this newspaper photo and the story that went with it. I have a sort of family link to a situation like this. My mother grew up in Bow, in the 1930s and 40s, at a time where they had the full poverty package: “food poverty” and “poverty poverty” and “everything else you can think of poverty” all at the same time. And there was a philanthropist woman who came and gave out food parcels to the poor children. To qualify you had to be small enough to pass under a portable arch that was set up in the cobbled street on distribution days. And my mother, who was a very small child (and is to this day a very small adult) managed to carry on passing under this arch well into her early teens and to keep on coming away with her little brown-paper bag of treats for years – much to the envy of her siblings and classmates. Which brings us back to the photo, and the problem I was telling you about. It was a problem of expectations. The “spin” the paper put on the picture was that it was supposed to look like it had been taken in a food bank. Of course, as an adult you have certain expectations about how you’d feel if you were so poor and your circumstances so dire that you had to go to one of these places to accept handouts. Embarrassed, perhaps. Miserable. Hopeless. But now imagine yourself at the age of six or seven. Being taken to a place where you are about to be given free food. Now, what was wrong with that picture?
