Hello‌ Hey, how are you? We're good, busy, but good. In fact, to say we've been busy would be an understatement. Not that I'm complaining. There's good busy and there's bad busy, and our recent months at Firestation Arts are definitely of the good busy kind. "How so Dan," you ask, "What's the happs??". Well, if you stop interrupting I'll tell. There's this here programme for a start. Loads of new events, a bunch of new classes, new interviews, and new artists on the walls, screen and stage. New is the thing. Same old building, always different. Lemonade Gallery and Prime Studios are busier than ever! Prime is now full to the brim with artists and creatives, from 3D printers to painters and musicians. Lemonade has been busy curating a huge programme of live streamed events with emerging artists from around the globe - a project called Them - a selection of which are included in here, augmented for your maximum pleasure. And talking of "augmented" - well close enough - we've even begun our projects in the VR space. We've commissioned dancers and theatre makers to work with us on brand new pieces made for VR, and we'll be sharing the results with you in the very near future. So yup, busy is our thing.

DJ KRUSH… With a musical career spanning well over two decades, DJ Krush is an almost mystical figure in dance and hip hop circles, infusing his dark and brooding music with an otherworldliness that is as unique as it is essential.
I was thinking that the colour from before, but with kind of a brush from now would just not be enough, so I needed to find a new colour and and a new brush.
From the iconic, sparse beats of 1994’s ‘Kemuri’ to the swirling, tribal jitteriness of 2012’s ‘Kuroi Ame - Black Rain’, countless remixes and his most recent - eleven years waiting - album ‘Butterfly Effect’, DJ Krush has blazed a purposeful trail and deeply focused personal journey.
Also, I managed to get rid of the frame and make music freely.
In the middle of his recent European tour dates to promote this latest album, Krush took a little time to talk to us about his music, the world and everything.
Butterfly Effect came out at the end of 2015, your first album in 11 years. How did it feel? With the gap of 11 years since the previous album release (add name), I was thinking a lot about what I can deliver to everyone's ears. Finally, I decided that I had to make something based on the characteristic Krush sound, but I wanted to add an atmosphere that came from Krush now, in 2015.
As a result, I think the new album presents a real difference to the work I’ve made so far.
Why so long since the last one? I’d been making new tracks to be released online, but they didn’t connect together as an album. Also, during that time I had DJ’d in every country and 11 years was just gone before I noticed. In addition, with release style, it used to be that you made an analog record or a CD, but the market has changed to online sales now because of the digital intervention. I was cautious and careful preparing for the release because of this circumstance.
What’s your favourite track on the album and why? It’s impossible to choose. Every song has such different views and texture.
It’s very much an album with a consistent flavour, not just a bunch of tracks. Is that deliberate? Is it important to you? This is the flow of a moment, that is, the album flows from that current moment. Towards my future, but going beyond the "I ” at the moment… If I have been able to move things forward with it, even just a little, I think this is good thing and it’s a product of myself. Children around the world live in the "current" of the earth, they can enjoy it regardless of the good and bad impacts on the global environment. But they will also be the ones who suffer from the variety of influences that will effect the future of the earth. I want to leave something better for future generations. Past, present and future is the make-up of human life, but I think there is a will to try to move forward positively day by day. One step ahead of our life, we do not know what will happen. I think it’s necessary to bring that understanding back into focus again, so that thought led to the concept for the album.
There’s a darkness and mystery to the DJ Krush sound. Is that part of you? A variety of reality has jumped into my life and this has to be part of my sound. The results are contained in the album.
Where do you see your music sitting in the history of Japanese music? Do you take references from traditional Japanese music, or the vibrant jazz and avant-garde scenes? It has been influenced by a variety of music. The “feel” from the traditional music of Japan slowly came up from the bottom of my heart and touched my consciousness, blended with my consciousness.
BUTTERFLY EFFECT It’s convenient somehow, but also not really.
What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry, clubs or labels, since you started out? The digital revolution has given rise to a huge variety of musical styles. The amount of information available is much greater than before, and easy to access, so anyone can participate. With such an information overload, I think it becomes more important for my work to be part of my own personality. Still incorporating the various influences, but as sustenance for my own sound, not dictated. I would lose myself if I didn’t say “do not lose yourself” all the time.
Do you have one memory that stands out from over thirty years of making music? 19/04/1995 America - When the Oklahoma City federal building was bombed, I was in a NY studio. 11/09/2001 America - I did a photoshoot in the bottom of the World Trade Centre two days before the terrorist attacks. 13/11/2015 France - When the terrorist attacks occurred, I was at the beginning of the EU tour and arrived in Paris the next day. 22/03/2016 Belgium - I was in London on the second leg of the EU tour when the attacks happened. I’d planned to go Belgium two days later. The feeling is not unnatural. It’s a very nostalgic feeling, an almost indescribable sense of security that covers my heart.
Do you have a method to writing and producing? I consider an imaginary short story and project the images without sound to the screen in my brain. Then I start to make a track, putting sound to the images. There’s often a variety of patterns, but I try to use all of my imagination and the variety of colours I see, to finish songs that are rich with that palette.
What’s a typical day in the studio? Sharpen the ear and concentrate on the screen which is full of music software. Fight against stiff shoulders and asthenopia.
And when you’re not in the studio? Many things. I might go to park or do some maintenance of the gear… If I have a time, I go to the sea and go fishing with a cold beer.
Where do you stand on Bobby Gillespie’s recent “the digital thing has destroyed music” statement?
What sort of stuff are you listening to right now? During the album production and tour I don’t listen to much other music.
What’s exciting about music?

Do you have any essential advice for aspiring producers and creatives? I’m not a great human to give advice to people.
I was born in the analog age, so I feel nostalgic when I enjoy music from an analog record or cassette tape. It has a fresh feeling and heart.
Favorite restaurant?
I have mixed feelings about the changing sales methods for music. I feel like I have to think more and more about other things aside from producing music.
What’s next for DJ Krush?
It’s important to accept the good and the bad, as professionals we can’t expect everything to be ideal.
Any restaurant with good Yakitori, Sashimi and Japanese rice.

Katie Tunn… Back in 2013, Windsor and London based artist Katie Tunn was doing alright. Her career as a portrait artist was taking off, she’d one prizes for her work, exhibited all over the place (including The Firestation), had a whole bunch of friends and a healthy party-girl weekend diary. So, naturally, she left. After a short month off one summer, wandering map-less around the Highlands and Islands, Katie returned reluctantly to London, where a chance job ad for a Gallery Assistant on Skye and an endless stream of Facebook ads and co-incidental TV documentaries made her mind up. Skye was called, and within a couple of months, she was gone.
Hi Katie, where are you now, what are you up to? Hi, I'm at home in the studio. I've just finished putting a resin glaze on a new painting and I'm about to make a fire and kick back for the evening. It's been a busy week so I'm looking forward to an evening off!
So if we understand this right, at the age of twentysomething, after living your whole life round London/ Windsor way, you upped sticks to the most northern cottage on the Isle of Skye, to set up an artist’s studio and set up environmental charity Art for Oceans. How did that come about? Well, my painting practice and Art For Oceans were already established by the time I made the decision to move to Skye, but the joy of being freelance meant that I had the freedom to move somewhere completely different. I was actually looking at moving back to London when it occurred to me that, other than family and friends, I had no ties or responsibilities keeping me in one place. I think that's quite a rare thing (for me anyway) so I saw the chance and took it. There are a number of different factors that led me to settle on Skye itself, but I knew after my first trip around the Highlands and Islands that this was a place I needed to return to. It sounds cheesy as hell, but once the sea and the mountains get into your heart it's difficult to not be called back.
Where did you start, it must have been daunting? Not at all. I arrived with no house to go to, no friends and little local knowledge but that's what made it exciting. When you're travelling to somewhere you want to be then it's pure anticipation, no trepidation.
What did you expect it to be like? I expected to experience living somewhere wild, remote and different. I was hoping for it to feel like a big adventure.
What’s the reality?

There was no feeling of adventure, it felt like I had come home. I had expected solitude and calm but instead I found wonderful people and plenty to do. There is always somewhere new to explore and someone new to meet.
What do you miss most? Other than my family and friends (of course), there's very little that I miss. There might be fewer shops and services here but you very quickly adjust. That said, we still have Michelin starred restaurants, contemporary galleries and artisan cafes... Skye is a fairly creative, forwardthinking island so it rarely feels like anything is missing.
How easy was it to integrate with the rest of the community there? Is it mainly Nomads like you, or mainly long standing families? It's probably about half and half. When I arrived I expected to have to work hard to integrate myself into the local community but I was taken aback by how warm the welcome was; Skye folk (incomers and 'locals') are the kindest people I've ever come across. As long as you're friendly and respectful it's easy to mix in.
Are you massively piped for internet and cable TV, or did you go more off grid? Although I get almost no phone signal I'm actually better connected internet-wise here than I ever was back in England. The downside of this is that I'm online more than I'd like to be; it's a necessary evil when it comes to work or keeping in touch with loved ones. Every now and again I take a few days out to go offgrid, to go camping and exploring, to write or to immerse myself in painting, but work means I always have to return eventually.
…Island Life places, or just watching rainbows or listening to storms. As an ocean lover I have fond memories of spotting my first basking shark here. It was a beautiful day with bright blue skies, some of my oldest friends had come to visit. I had taken them for a walk along the cliffs behind my house and as we sat overlooking the sea I noticed a huge black fin snaking through the water. We scrambled down the cliff for a closer look and it turned out to be a huge, dark grey basker. We sat on the rocks just metres away watching it weave between lions mane jellyfish in the crystal clear water whilst gannets plunged after fish in the water around it. It was mesmerising. Of course, seeing the Northern Lights is always pretty magical too. We're kind of spoilt for nature here.
Do you get lonely? It took a year before I felt my first pangs of loneliness. I had a little bit of heartbreak and suddenly realised how far away I was from the hugs of friends and family. But I think the trick to loneliness is recognising it and getting out there - it's a great excuse to pack a bag and go off exploring new places. There's enough to do here that you can easily distract yourself.
What’s your biggest hindsight revelation of the life you had before Skye? Well, I didn't expect for my perspective to have changed as much as it has. I suppose being in a natural landscape has made me more fiercely protective of it in an environmental sense.
How does being a portrait painter on an island with very few people work? My client base is fairly spread out, so I've often had to travel long distances to sittings. Most of my commissions still come from the South of England or Germany, only now the journey back is a little longer.
Has your work or style changed since living on Skye? Whilst I still enjoy working in portraiture, I've recently started creating abstract contemporary work inspired by my new home. This recent series is more intuitive and is inspired by the colours and patterns of the geology, seascapes and skies here.
What’s your best moment so far? It's hard to pinpoint one; if you take joy from the small things then every day here can be special... seeing new wildlife, exploring new
Similarly, my tolerance for consumerism/ materialism has really decreased. For example, last Christmas I returned to London and found myself at a large store where shoppers were just grabbing novelty gifts off the shelves and shoving them into bursting trolleys, barely looking at what they were choosing. It seemed like buying for the sake of buying and I found it kind of gross. I suppose it's just a modern day thing but we don't have huge shops in Skye so you're forced to live a slightly simpler existence. There's a great article by George Monbiot called ‘The Gift of Death' which I really relate to in terms of environment and the buying of “stuff”.
Do you see yourself back in London? No. I love London and always have, it's the city I grew up in. But now it's a place to visit, somewhere to dip in and out of, for fun stuff and playing with friends. Now if I'm in a city for more than a couple of days I start wishing I could get back to the hills and the ocean.

ISLAMIC ART CLASSES Prime Studios For centuries, Muslim artists have used gold, ink, and brightly coloured paints to illuminate and beautify sacred manuscripts. Focusing on the beautiful "shamsa" (sun-burst) composition, and intricate floral designs, students explore the rich and varied forms that exist in Islamic manuscript illumination. They learn how to paint illuminated plant and floral motifs using techniques known as "halkar" and “tarama”, as well as the essential design principles that go into creating floral compositions. Students learn about traditional painting and gilding techniques used in Islamic manuscript illumination, including making and using shell gold and handmade watercolour paints.
