Hello.. It’s funny the thoughts and activities which end up taking up all your time - which emoji to use, running upstairs to grab your shoes and repeatedly coming back downstairs without them, 9 grain wheat bread or Italian honey-oat whatever - and right now which issue of Beat this is. And I don’t mean the number. That this is issue number 23 is not in doubt, but whether it’s the Winter or the Spring issue has caused significant debate in the office. Voices have been raised, confounded and exasperated expressions have been‌ expressed, friendships have been cast in doubt and - I say this quietly - harrumphing has occurred. Our last issue - ‘the Autumn issue’ - is a no brainer, so too the next one from May to August. ‘Summer’. But this one, this one belongs in neither one or the other and as a result gets referred to in the long form as 'January to April’, or the more nifty ‘Sprinter’ (which we were quite proud of, sadly). Granted, it’s not the most pressing issue you’ll come across today, the ongoing Prosecco crisis and question of which is better Vikings or Game of Thrones - are no doubt causing you greater consternation. But the devil is in the details (apparently) and this one, at least, has been exorcised. So, you know, you’re welcome.

The Firestation is within easy reach of the M4 (Jct 6) and M40 (Jct 2). We have a number of inexpensive short stay bays opposite The Firestation offering discounts for Advantage Card holders. A parking space at the rear of the building is available for Disabled Badge holders plus a limited number of spaces are kindly made available to us from 7pm (please check on arrival). Nearest multi-storey car park is situated 5 minutes away on the corner of Victoria Road and Alexandra Road.
ACCESS The Auditorium and Upper Bar are accessible by wheelchair and there is a designated disabled parking space and access ramp at the rear of the building. From September onwards, our new lift makes the Basement Studio fully accessible.

Paul Kindersley graduated from Chelsea College of Art in 2009, he is an artist, stalker, makeup enthusiast and YouTuber based in London.
DJ FOOD… If, like me, you first discovered the joy of mixing vinyl in the early 90s - bottle of Becks wedged between the hand-cut foam under the 1210s and the mixer with no fader knobs, wiping golden tobacco dust off the brushed black plates on the side of your t-shirt, trying to work out if an un-labelled promo was jungle at 45rpm or something else from Bristol at 33rpm - then you’ll most likely have come across DJ Food with their Jazz Breaks series.
You’re at Videocrash at Rich Mix in December premiering ‘FutureShock’, with more live shows to follow. Excited? Kind of more worried that I'll never get everything done in time, there are so many options but I'm really looking forward to seeing what Cheeba, Robin and Tom get up to, it'll be a great excuse to get together.
Tell us a bit about what to expect? A sci-fi-themed set, with a retro edge visually and a futuristic sound musically. I really like the way a lot of electronic music these days is harking back to 60s, 70s and 80s styles, modular synths coming back into fashion - that Shock of the New except with another 25 years worth of musical knowledge.
Are you streaming/broadcasting ‘Futureshock’? Not unless you know something I don't! :)
How do you see ‘live spaces’ changing with the proliferation of digital spaces and - next year - VR? I'm wondering if, come the era of Oculus Rift, whether anyone will even go out over a certain age? Will we just have the gig streamed to our headsets/glasses? It would be cheaper at the bar for sure.
Visuals and new media have always been a key part of your work. How come? There was a time when, armed with a couple of DJ Food albums, some Jeep Grrlz DJ tools 12s, an acapella or two and a lot of front, you could pull off a whole night with half a dozen records and a kill switch. Then again, perhaps you first heard the - now 25 year old - Ninja Tune collective in a back room somewhere, or collapsed on a sofa in the early hours, being transported to darker, deeper places by seminal tracks like ‘Consciousness’, ‘Dark Lady’ or ‘The Crow’.
Probably because of my graphic design background, the two go together naturally for me. I was drawing way before I became interested in music and writing graffiti before learning to DJ, I can't imagine one without the other and they can enhance each other obviously.
Do you write the music then add the visuals, or does it also work the other way around?
Either way, whether you know it or not, rather like friends of friends of friends, or rats in London, you’re never more than 6 steps away from a DJ Food tune, largely because in the last quarter of a century DJ Food - in its various incarnations - has never been more than six steps away from club culture and the evolution of dance music.
Usually yes but something visual can inspire the music, especially film. It's funny how a lot of artists score to a moving image but you hear of few who will write music to accompany a still.
In the run up to a brand new live show debuting at Rich Mix in London, with trademark state of the art visuals sharing centre stage with the music, DJ Food’s Strictly Kev took a little time to talk to us about how it’s going, and how it’s been.
I'd wanted to work with him for years, probably since the mid 90s, after being a fan since the 80s. I got a chance to meet up with him in 2003 I think, to work on a different project that never came to fruition. We kept in touch and I dropped the idea into the conversation and started sending him roughs which were pretty rough to be honest. This is over several years, very sporadic and, eventually, I felt I nailed a version of 'GIANT' I was happy with which he then laid the vocals on. I think that track took four years from beginning to end, it was the first thing I started and the last finished for the last album. I'm working on something non-musical with him at the moment and there's still an officially unreleased version of the song which he's going to put out on his Cineola label

What are you up to? Making content for Videocrash, designing logos, going to gigs, mixing, writing and making artwork for an upcoming exhibition about The Rammellzee and preparing for a talk about Flexi discs the day after the Rich Mix gig.
How did the Matt Johnson collaboration on The Search Engine come about?
FUTURESHOCK at some point. He's great fun and it's nice to meet one of your heroes and have them exceed expectations.

So much, there's a ridiculously good amount of music around right now: Cavern of Anti-Matter, The Comet Is Coming, Melt Yourself Down, Eagles of Death Metal, Divine Styler, Memory Man, Soundsci, Floating Points, House of Black Lanterns, Black Channels, Calibro 35, Markey Funk, Rodinia, Jane Weaver, Annabel (lee), The Buried Treasure, Ghost Box and Gamma Proforma labels.
What’s your favourite bit of tech, either studio or live? I'd love to have Barry Adamson do a vocal on something as he's got such a rich baritone. I'd also like to work with a lot of modern day female vocalists, in fact I compiled a list just the other day but I'm keeping it to myself :)
I'm pretty low tech, the Rane TTm 62 does me fine when I'm DJing, I take it to any gig where I'm playing, I love the filters on it.
Dance music, clubbing and the music industry have changed pretty massively since DJ Food started in 1990. What do you miss? What don’t you miss?
I'm happiest sitting in front of the G5 studio desktop machine and
And personal tech?
I don't miss lugging heavy boxes of vinyl around the world (thank you Serato) although I do still play 45s out occasionally but digital DJing and the additional VJing as well really was a massive sea change. I don't miss smoking in clubs or crappy mixers with faders that moved like syrup had been poured in them. I do miss a time before the mobile phone distracted people every 2 minutes and the ADD of some audiences these days.
Keeping a collective going for the best part of 25 years is no small trick. What’s the secret to collaborative happiness? Be the boss! No, well, Food is less of a collective these days but collaboration is all about working out the respective strengths and weaknesses of those involved and moving out of the usual comfort zones to new places. I'm convinced that most of my collaborative work is better for the involvement of others because they push me to places I wouldn't normally go.
With so many spin-off projects related to DJ Food, how do you decide which is which, what goes where? I don't, it's kind of impossible as I have so many fingers in so many pies (pun intended). I kind of look at it like:

What’s the best gig or night of someone else’s you’ve been to? The Secret Cinema Star Wars gigs this summer are going to take some beating, being captured by stormtroopers, leading a prison breakout with my family, trading blueprints with Boba Fett for tickets off planet and then seeing a full size X-Wing fighter fly overhead.
Any weirdness on your rider? No alcohol!

A mix of The Rammellzee's music for Solid Steel coming mid December to coincide with an art exhibition in London, design work on a box set for Belgium's De:Tuned label, writing for The Quietus and Vinyl Factory sites and a couple of 45-only mixes for radio shows. If you could go back and change one thing, what would it be? I really should have made an album between 2000 and 2012! Although I did produced multiple mix CDs, radio shows, remixes,
Tell us something we don’t know? In 2007 I helped issue a lost album by a trio of brothers called The Dragons from the west coast called 'B.F.I'. In The Gallery MIA DUNNING - SUPERNOVA
Until 16th January
Mia’s biro drawings have a nostalgic quality of childhood doodles. She has a distinctive technique of mark-making that creates a sense of spontaneity in her work. From afar, her drawings have a fluid, watercolour-like quality, but as you draw nearer the painstakingly fastidious cross-hatching displays the remarkable patience and confidence required to complete them. The mistakes, blotches and imperfections are left to provide a record of her labour. Since studying fine art at Oxford Brookes and latterly the University of Gloucestershire, Mia has developed a unique and arresting style, combining playful form and colour that takes on a celestial aesthetic.

Rebecca Searle is a young London based artist, whose work challenges the divisions we perceive between definitions of landscape, still life and the city-scape. Working largely in oil on canvas, with bold brush and knife strokes, many of her pieces occupy the space where abstract shape collides with the hard edge of architectural form. Rebecca was an Art Scholar at Gresham’s School and graduated in design from Norwich University of the Arts. She was an award-winning graphic designer at a leading London branding agency before returning to her first love, painting.

The Man With The Mechanical Heart is a magically charming evening with terrifying escapes and classic comedy. Sword swallowing, knife juggling, magic, and a daring underwater escape are all in an evening’s work for this modern day mix of Houdini and Tommy Cooper. Julia Biel… Love Julia Biel is a rare talent, moving effortlessly through classic jazz tones, psychedelia, the softest electroacoustic moments and sweeping cinematic landscapes. Already tipped by The Independent as “the best British vocalist to emerge in an age”, the arrival of her stunning second album Love Letters and Other Missiles and a recent MOBO nomination have shifted her out onto ever bigger stages. At the turn of 2015/16, Julia talks to us about writing, making videos and geeks.
guitarist, Jonny Phillips, and artistically represents the place where we met in the middle. 'Love Letters and Other Missiles’ (my new album) is an album of self-penned songs and so is more unadulterated 'me' if you like! Also, I graduated to being a self-accompanying singer and songwriter with this album, playing piano and guitar. Musically, the free reign I had has resulted in an album that at times is quite dark but also cinematic. It's an album that I hope casts my love of old school jazz harmony into a contemporary context lyrically and sonically.
You just produced a remix EP 'Licence to be Cruel' as well. How did that come about? It feels like I've been collecting remixes kinda like a child collects pretty pebbles for some time! It seemed only right and proper to find a way of putting them on display. All these producers have created something wholly different and convincing as separate pieces of music from the original songs they were working with and it's always a real thrill to hear my voice in totally different sound worlds. I worked with all the producers tweaking structures and other details and the EP took shape.
You were recently nominated for a MOBO award, how did it feel? I saw the news announced on Twitter and it was so out of the blue and unexpected it took a while to sink in! You know, as an artist you're constantly working to pull your version of reality out of your own mind and into a form you can behold. It's such an allconsuming enterprise that when you get recognition of that kind that says other people are listening to, appreciating and enjoying your work, it's a fantastically worldbroadening experience and it was really exciting news to share with friends and fans.

My first song crush was 'Sweet Dreams' by Eurythmics.
When did you write your first song and what was it called?
Ha ha, my first song was called 'Enough is Enough'. No one has Do you know, I'm not sure. The last time I released anything social ever heard it but I still occasionally find myself humming its media didn't exist. If you could duet with anyone, from anytime, who would it be and which song? Ooh I think it would have to be Nat King Cole - but I wouldn't go ahead and choose the song without consulting him ;)
How does the creative process of writing and producing work for you? Where do you find inspiration for your music? Everything goes in and comes out refracted through the lens of my angle on the world. Anything can inspire you and there are no limits, so you have to be open-hearted and take everything, the bad along with the good. Sometimes it's overwhelming but you can't control that.
How much artistic involvement do you have in your music videos? And which one is your favourite?
In 10 years time, what would you like to be doing, what would you like to have achieved? I'd like to still be making music and have been able to make a continuous living from doing it - I'd love to just keep doing what I'm doing, touring it around and hopefully performing music that connects with people. That's what it's all about.
What's on your iPod? Truthfully? I don't have an iPod. When the whole digital revolution took place I was some way behind and haven't caught up on that one yet. (See below re geeky things I don't know!)
You’ve had a busy year, what are your plans and projects for the future? At the moment, in-between tour dates, I'm busy producing album number 3!
Sushi or Pizza? Pizza all the way.
In the case of all my music videos so far, they've been a collaborative process between me and the team involved. I don't think you can ever fully hand over creative responsibility to someone else and still be expressing yourself in a way that is going to be true to yourself, and you definitely can't expect it to turn out how you want it to if you do. Ultimately all aspects of my artistic identity need to work in harmony according to my artistic vision and be the best they can be in that timeframe, within the natural limitations of their creative circumstances. Each one has a story to tell in terms of how it came about, but I'd say my favourite video so far is the one I made with Rebekah Dobbins for We Watch the Stars. I explained my vision to her and she ran with it and brought so much more than I could have dreamt of to the table. It was a really cold day and we were all absolutely freezing, but everyone involved was in high spirits all day and threw themselves into it. On the day of the shoot, despite best-laid plans, there were things that went wrong that turned out to be blessings in disguise, as the improvised solutions were much better for the mood of the video than some of the things we'd planned. Sometimes that's the way it goes, you have to stay flexible and positive and that video is testament to that. Yeah, I'm proud of that one.
What’s the best thing about being you? Is that a trick question? Erm.. I will say I feel blessed to be mixed race.
Who would you most like to collaborate with in the future? I'm having a big alt-J phase at the moment - it'd be amazing to collaborate with them for sure if the stars aligned to make it happen.
Trains or planes? Trains no question.
What’s the most geeky thing you know? Hmm, well I muddle through at best - I just don't have the head for retaining that kind of info and so invariably the next time I need to know the same thing, I'm starting from scratch all over again. I'd say the most geeky things I can definitely say I know are the names of the geeky people I call on to help me figure all the geeky stuff out. LINDY HOP SWING DANCE CLASSES Lindy hop is the original style of partnered swing dancing. From the dance halls of 1920s Harlem it exploded with the worldwide swing craze of the 30s and 40s. Over the last 20-30 years swing dancing has been enjoying a global renaissance. Focusing on the beautiful "shamsa" (sun-burst) composition, and intricate floral designs, students explore the rich and varied forms that exist in Islamic manuscript illumination. They learn how to paint illuminated plant and floral motifs using techniques known as "halkar" and “tarama”, as well as the essential design principles that go into creating floral compositions. Students learn about traditional painting and gilding techniques used in Islamic manuscript illumination, including making and using shell gold and handmade watercolour paints. SILK PAINTING Prime Studios Ages 16+ Painting on silk is a wonderful way to produce vibrant glowing art works whether in the form of paintings, scarves, cushion-covers, clothing or wall-hangings. In this class you will learn all the necessary techniques and options, including a basic understanding of colour and composition in a painting or design. You will learn about the dyes and how to handle them, the different kinds of frames that can be used to stretch the silk, and the use of gutta as a resist, to curb the flow of the dyes. Other methods will include water colour technique, wax technique, using salt, sugar and alcohol for special effects, stamping, stencilling, and using thickener and anti-spread medium for painterly techniques.
A fun and lively life drawing session for all abilities – from total beginner to professional artist. There is music, plus excellent stage-lighting in the studio, which allows a great range of tone. Highly-experienced and professional models pose (nude) for the class, for a combination of quick and long poses with typically one very long pose at the end. Students can bring whatever materials they want to use – e.g. pencils, oil paint, acrylic, chalks etc, and paper. Easels and drawing boards will be provided and class tutor - Patrick Palmer - brings a selection of basic materials and paper. Patrick is a professional artist who specialises in drawing and painting the female form. He exhibits in Mayfair and the King's Road in London, and his work has been included in several books. He is happy to help you with method and technique. Alternatively you can be left to your own devices.
