Hello.. At last... sunshine!! Not - I guess - that it was a particularly harsh winter (no floods, no locusts), but I did find myself hanging out for the first taste of spring this year. Maybe it was just a bit of a grey one, a winter with a small 'w', either way, now the sun’s out I'm going Miami to the max. They'll be none of this fixing the roof whilst the sun shines either. No way! I intend to lounge considerably, tunes on, maybe a book, maybe some haloumi. And we have earned just a little chill. You'll notice lots of new furniture, a good lick of paint, a bit of a rearrange in how we do things, and maybe even one or two events in the diary. We've been busy making new friends, making connections with places and people you might not have heard about yet, hooking up with the artists who are setting the pace for tomorrow's world. Our breaking comedy and new theatre events are bringing in bigger and bigger audiences, Young Guns new music night has been blinding, and even Hitchin's Lab is regularly full to the brim. There's more of that this season, and we've added an all-day music festival with 2 stages to ramp things up a level! We’ve been hard at it online too - Lemonade Gallery has had a major overhaul, with a bunch of new artists signed and some really exciting work in Lemonade Open. Our shop is freshly stocked, with boutique clothing and self-published writers, prints, and music. Lastly, thanks to all of you who took part and gave us your feedback with our Neo-Ticketing project. Live testing is now done and dusted, and it's been a very interesting 8 months. You'll notice that our prices are still dynamic; that's because the feedback from artists and you lot was so good we thought we'd keep at it.

In other news..

Kindly supported by

Greyscale Theatre kick of the summer season with the brilliant ‘Gods Are Fallen And All Safety Gone’, we’ve new club nights from DJ Lottie and Strawberry Sundae, Ali Cook and Pete Firman are in the house, there’s live music from Esperi and Louise Petit, and the best not-at-Glastonbury-Glastonbury event you could wish for! See you in the deck chairs, Dan ……………………………………………………………………………………………….

3 MINUTES WITH MEG MOSLEY Our favourite selfie queen, media artist, & princess takes time out from the Trow Vegas - London commute to talk inspirations, being re-made on stage and how it's good to be a chameleon. Hey Meg, how are you today? I'm grand thanks, apart from having a cough that sounds like a fake cough. It has an embarrassingly attention seeking sound.

Whatcha doin? On my way home from having seen my online persona 'Megastar' acted in an actual play! Art mirrors life mirrors art right? Weird! It was a play about the internet by Chris Hogg called 'What Happens When You Click On It' at Arcola Theatre. Lush!

Can you sum up your work in one sentence? I'm a funny chameleon on a mission to explore the everyday with wonder, to understand the spiritual, the mundane, and the impulse to belong that is within us all. (Woah I think I could recruit using that sentence #JoinMe)

What's your fav piece of your work? A documentary I made with my granny, where I went on 8 years of OAP holidays charting the trials of ageing and our growing friendship and understanding.

What other artists inspire you?

How was it being recreated on stage for (Christopher Hogg’s) “What Happens When You Click On It?"? Quite odd I suppose. But mostly just intriguing. I don’t, like, attach too much analysis to Megastar, she's an internet mermaid! As in she's free! I have always just rolled with whatever comes up for her. She's an exercise in identity, being fluid and creatively fun.

What's on your headphones? Disney - to get in the 'zone' for my princess duties - and an array of mainstream pop - oh and I Dreamed a Dream by Susan Boyle. True story. Music inspires me. I like hearing all the hopes and aspirations in mainstream ballads. I love music that's deemed bad. It only got bad as so many people liked it. I wanna know why.

What's on your Netflix watched list? Lots of documentaries on anything and biographies on everyone and film dramas about the human condition, weird but uplifting friendships, and why love is confusing.

Funny young women! Sarah Maple, Luisa Omielan, Bryonny Kimmings, Abbie Murphy… lots of these bar Mapes are classed as comedy or theatre, but inspo is inspo, right? I just like people who tell their truths or explore the fabric of fiction!

DJ Lottie: Geisha From Turnmills to The End to R1’s Essential Mix, Lottie has been at the forefront of the electronic music scene for two decades, DJing across the globe at the most ground breaking clubs in the world since the early 90’s. She’s possibly t he most iconic female DJ ever, gracing the cover of Muzik magazine, Time Out London, Jockey Slut, Mixmag Update, ID-J.

Before that I had basically lived out of a suitcase touring the World DJing and partying, only to come back to my flat to get some more records and wash my clothes. I rarely got up before midday so it was a massive life change.

In May 2015 she’s launching brand new night Acidhousewife, br inging t he good times of Misdemeanours and the femalefronted swagger of Geisha to The Firestation, for a no prisoners dance floor session just how you like it. We took a few minutes to catch up with Lottie and talk about her meteoric career, the club scene today and being a working Mum. How are you? Very well thank you!

Where are you, watcha doing? At home doing a mix of housework and vinyl sorting. I do a vinyl only set now at Chiltern Firehouse so I’ve had to dust off the 12’s and get a set together. Basically I’m listening to records whilst packing the dishwasher.

Your new night “Acidhousewife” is launching at The Firestation this summer. Tell us what to expect? Well, I want to play loads of new music because there’s so much great new stuff out there and the bulk of the night will be exciting new music. But, as Lisa and I have been listening and loving house music for a long time and were there for the acid house explosion, (Lisa was in London at Shoom and Ibiza and I was up North going to the Hacienda) I want to inject some of that history into the night’s set too, so it will be a mix of both.

How did the idea come about? My life is very different now I’m a mother and married. I definitely grew up (sort of) when I moved out of London and set up home here. I had to do the school run every morning and learn how to cook!

That said, while I live a more responsible life now my love and passion for house music is still very much alive and I’ve found other people just like me; Parents, wives, husbands who love family life but still love dance music. Acidhousewife became my new nickname a few years ago because of this so it seemed like the perfect name for a party

Over two decades behind the decks. Do you have a favourite moment? There’s a few, but playing at the Exit Festival festival two years running to around 40,000 people going mental is definitely up there. Also regularly playing the closing set on the terrace at Space in Ibiza and being named the Queen of Ibiza by Friz & Pepe (the owners) made me very very happy! Diving into the crowd from the DJ booth at DC10 in 2002, and doing Pete Tong’s Essential Selection broadcasting to 2 million people on a Friday night was nerve wracking but very rewarding. I’ve had some fun times.

And the weirdest? I played in an old fortress only accessible by boat - just off the coast of Russia near St. Petersburg - with Tiga and Daniele Davoli one July and a HUGE swarm of massive insects were spinning around me as I played totally freaking me out. There were massive spotlights on me and it was dark everywhere else so they were obviously attracted to the light. I wanted to run screaming from the decks but managed to stick it out somehow.

How has the club scene changed since you started out?

to Housewife Quite a lot actually. It’s a lot more corporate and money orientated now. Also there’s a massive divide between DJ’s. Not just the EDM vs House debate, but you have these massive DJ’s who are pop stars really - because their music regularly charts making hundreds of thousands of pounds every weekend - and then you have the unknown DJ’s making £100 a gig and there’s not so much in between anymore.

Could you make an all-time top 3? This changes all the time but here ya go, can I give you 5 instead of 3?!…. Photon Inc. - “Generate Power” (Wild Pitch mix) A Guy Called Gerald - “Voodoo Ray” Inner City - “Good Life” Deep Dish - “Stay Gold” Armand Van Helden - “You Don’t Even Know Me”

You became a parent 10 years ago. How did you work out being a Mum and a DJ? I have a very helpful husband who actually likes getting up early! It was quite difficult though and finding childcare has always been a problem so my DJ career did take a back seat. I love being a Mum though and that will always come first. I’m making much more time to DJ now though, so it’s time for a renaissance.

Has being a Mum and family life changed the music that makes you tick? It hasn’t changed my musical taste no. I still have my “I love techno’ days, but house will always be my thing. I am perhaps a bit more open minded now though. All that middle ground of decent talented DJ’s and producers has been trimmed down. Also, anybody can download tracks and get them mixed on a computer for them but in the 90’s our record boxes were gold dust and you actually had to put the time in and learn to mix. Everybody’s a DJ now!

Is it easier/harder for girls now? Does it matter? I was lucky, for me it wasn’t really about being female. I earned respect from fellow music lovers, promoters and other DJ’s and producers because I knew my stuff. I had a massive record collection and I’d taught myself to mix when I was still at school, which was unheard of in Chester in 1989! Everyone I met was open minded and respected me, because I was knowledgeable and passionate about dance music. So while it took a long time for me to get noticed (because I was rubbish at promoting myself) I eventually got there because I deserved it, and I don’t think being female had anything to do with it.

Clubbing has always been sexy, but at the minute it seems a lot more sexualised, perhaps less gender progressive. Do you see that? I see a load of posters for dodgy EDM nights with scantily clad females yes, and there is that VIP culture in certain clubs which I hate that takes us back about 50 years. Rich men at tables ordering over priced vodka, surrounded by beautiful women in lycra but thats not my idea of clubbing.

If you could do it all over again, would you change anything? Nope

What makes a great tune? Clean sharp production and an emotive hook.

Is your son under instruction in the ways of House & Garage? I have taught him how to mix on Pioneer CDJ’s, but he’s far more interested in football to be honest.

Do you cry at TV adverts? Regularly

What advice would you give to any emerging DJ/ Producer? You have to be a producer now to be a DJ so lock yourself up in a room and learn all the technical stuff, work out what you love and crack on!

Craft Beer or Martinis? Never beer. I like an espresso martini, but it’s red wine all the time for me.

Heels or sneakers? Sneakers, (well trainers). I once wore a pair of gorgeous Prada heels whilst DJing with X-Press II in Sao Paulo in Brazil and pulled the mixer across the stage because my headphones had wrapped around my stiletto. 7 It was incredibily embarrassing, but luckily as it was XPress II on after me and they had about 6 decks and mixers on their tech spec we had another one to use. Acidhousewife launches at The Firestation on May 9th.

THINGS WE LIKE…

just the most gorgeous live session from Amelia Meath & Nick Sanborn - aka Sylvan Esso - from NPR’s warm and cuddly Tiny Desk Concerts series. Check this, then check them all! who doesn’t love a good cover version, eh?? Although we confess to being a bit fed up of the endless stream of slowed up versions of fasties, this cover of The Kink’s ‘Waterloo Sunset’ from Shannon Wardrup’s session with our number 1 DJ Linda Serck and BBC Introducing is too good to miss..

Ali Cook Ali Cook quite possibly needs no introduction, you may well recognise him from the tele box! From shows such as Now You See It (BBC1), Dirty Tricks (Channel 4), Monkey Magic (Five), Psychic Secrets Revealed – with Derren Brown (Five) and The Secret World of Magic (Sky1). Then again, you might have caught him acting in ITV1's Mr Selfridge or in the movies; Get Lucky, The Anomoly and Kajaki. He’s a man of many talents; magician, comedian, writer, director and actor, but forget any preconceptions you have about magic or magicians, Ali Cook is the wild card of the alternative magic scene and he’ll turn even the most avid sceptic into a fan. Ali is part of a whole army of young performers helping to breathe new fire into a once tired magic scene. After years of family friendly Paul Daniels shows, where magic was synonymous with cheesy, over-dramatic cape-and-top-hat antics, magic is now appealing to a younger and cooler audience, with tricks that are a complete departure from the family friendly shows of the past; in fact, 'abracadabra' is no longer needed, the tricks wow enough on their own. You know razor blades? Those sharp metal blades? Oh yeah, Ali Cook eats those... And how about Houdini's water tank escape, heard of that? Well he's done that too, with an extra twist! “As well as escapology, Cook does jaw-dropping Derren Brown-style mindreading feats, fabulously dexterous close-up magic, gruesome gross-out pranks and magic tricks the like of which you've never seen before” So says Steve Bennett from the UK's comedy guide Chortle. GQ called him “one of the most sought-after illusionists on the planet" and he is bringing his new show The Art of Astonishment here to The Firestation, get your tickets and get ready to witness breathtaking trickery from a master of his craft. What people are saying about the show: Ali Cook delivers “… mischief of the slickest kind” Telegraph. “Supremely talented” Time Out. “You blew us way” Penn & Teller. “'Tricks the like of which you've never seen before” Chortle. We were able to get in a few questions to get a little insight into the man behind all the buzz. Here's what Ali Cook has to say on his show, career and the magic scene.

When a new bit of the show finally gets a great reaction from the audience.

What is the most memorable reaction you have had to one of your tricks? Someone fainted on a TV show I did where I seemingly removed a tumour from someone’s body. In fact it’s an illusion called psychic surgery and we were trying to expose the scam for what it is: A con.

What is your favourite trick to perform? It changes all the time. Although maybe it’s the one is where I swallow goldfish.

Can you give us a summary of The Art of Astonishment?

How long do you practice new tricks before you perform them?

It’s a curious combination of dexterous sleight of hand performed alongside rarely seen grand stage illusions.

It’s a mixture. I try to start performing new material as soon as possible. It can only get better in front of an audience.

You are touring from May until July. How do you find life on the road? I love it.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

Wild Card Magic Do you think people's opinion on magic has changed in recent years? Yes magic is hip again. Magic is the new comedy.

What do you think has been the catalyst for this? I think its youtube. Magic is very popular on youtube. People love to watch and re watch and re watch until they have figured it out.

As well as live performances, you’ve also done lots for TV and film. Do you have a preference between the two?

g in it c x e is lm fi r o V Any T e h t s t a e b g in h t but no . e c n ie d u a e v li a f o thrill

You have written many of the shows you performed in. Where do you find inspiration for your comedy writing? Comedy writing is hard. I keep a little notebook and take it around with me everywhere. When inspiration strikes I jot it down.

How did you get into magic? My mum had a new age book shop and some of the books that came into the shop were about magic tricks rather than real magic. A few came in and I was hooked.

Where do you think you would be now if you hadn't seen those books? Working in my mum’s new age bookshop.

What or who is your biggest influence? Steve Martin. He started out working in a magic shop in Disney Land and became a movie star. There is hope for us all.

Would you like to follow in his direction as a Hollywood actor? What writing and starring in your own hit movies??? Er maybe I guess. I suppose hosting the Oscars wouldn’t be too bad either.

What advice would you give to any aspiring magicians? Perform wherever you can to anyone who will watch.

What's next for you? The Edinburgh festival 2015 with my new show The Art Of Astonishment.

How do you wind down after a show?

How does working on a movie compare to making work for the small screen?

Watch House of Cards.

Interestingly there is a lot more money in TV than movies in the UK so really when you guest on something like Mr. Selfridge it’s a real luxury. British films are hard, hard work.

Irish coffee.

The movie The Anomaly is quite a break from your comedic style. How did you find the transition?

The lines I need to learn!

Its all the same rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse.

I’m old school. I like books.

What’s your guilty pleasure? What’s in your headphones? What’s on your Kindle?

BRIDGING THE VOID

by Hollie McGill

Bridging the Void is a dance-film production, designed and produced by dance company Experiential. Interlacing dance, film, and ambient cinematic music to create an immersive and mesmerising experience, the show moves from darkness, through sunrise, to dawn light. The performance unfolds around the audience, who are invited to wander freely through the production, with the aim that each person’s experience will be unique to them.

seem to bask in the sunlight and reach for its warmth after the cold night. Movements shift from erratic to smooth, with prominent back arches and Matrix-esque moments interspersed with hypnotic swaying. Rhythms pulse and echo through the dancers, as they fight against themselves and each other in a bid for the sun's attention. The trio take turns in solos, coming back together periodically, leaning, pushing, mirroring – all in the inexorable glare of the slowly rising sun. With gravity defying lifts and balance, the dancers pulse and convulse and then - with an almost shamanic intensity - rapidly rock back and forth with a frantic but contained chaos, like boiling molecules heated by the sun.

Rachel Johnson, the company’s artistic director, choreographer, and film artist, created Bridging the Void in response to the sunrise in Arizona, speaking with Native Americans about their relationship with the sun and their saying “Every Night is followed by Sunrise”. The performance was then developed collaboratively, working with dancers, composers, and a cinematographer. I caught Bridging the Void at the Firestation in April 2015. With no defined audience area, we enter into darkness, clinging to the shelter of the walls and peering into the unknown. Who is brave enough to step away from safety and roam amongst the shadows?

It’s an unnerving experience; to see nothing and hear unfamiliar sounds, in a space with uncertain boundaries and the feeling that something else is moving around you. It has the feel of a horror experience at first and the effect is to heighten the senses and bring the audience firmly into the moment. How the three dancers manage to dance around in sync in a blackout is baffling (apparently they spend a good 15 minutes in the dark first to acclimatise). But the dancers are not alone in their performance, there is another player: the sun. It takes an equal place amongst the cast and is hard to ignore once sunrise begins, slowly illuminating the dancers. It’s a Primrose Hill sunrise, shot one freezing winter morning with the crew in thermals and praying for clear skies. Dancer Elzbieta Kowalik was surprised by how busy the park was at such an early winter hour, so for her “the steady rise of the sun represented a serenity and calmness amidst an ever busy city.” As the projection flickers to life, the sun slowly emerges from behind the London skyline, revealing the three dancers sitting as statues to welcome in the new day. Sunrise is coming. There is stillness, but the world carries on ever changing. Celia Vuille describes their unique devising process as spontaneous responses to situations where the feelings of the body inform movement and form. “The intention and individual story behind our movement is the most important aspect.” This narrative approach and emotional 18 connection to the material definitely produce some memorable and eye-catching choreography, where the dancers

The lighting and sound design should also be mentioned, working perfectly with the mood and pace of the choreography. The show begins with the sound of heavy, erratic breathing, which creates an uneasy mood in the darkness. Then, as the sun appears, the music awakens; calm, serene as the lighting intensifies the sun’s warmth. Bridging the Void is on tour thanks to a chunk of Arts Council funding, visiting the full spectrum of regional and metropolitan venues. “Performing Bridging the Void on tour in venues of varying size and shape gives each performance its own identity and very often its own challenge for us as dancers.” says Eleanor Palmer. “We adapt the set material to fit in small spaces, fill large ones, and filter around the scattered audience members. I relish the opportunity to get up close and physically affect the spectators beside me.” As the performance draws to a close, I find myself questioning my own part in the event. Should I have stood somewhere else? Why didn’t I stand in the middle? I certainly wanted to stand in the middle! Perhaps I wish I was braver, maybe next time I'll be bold. If you can catch the show during the tour, be brave, go for it, walk through it and push yourself out of your comfort 'audience' mode. You’ll be rewarded with an experience that will stay with you through many sunrises to come.
