OUGD303 — Brief 2 / Forces of Nature The Brief — Create an identity for a new exhibition of documentary photography entitled ‘Forces of Nature. This brief was centred around identity and promotion and its application across different deliverables. The challenge was to create an identity that was memorable and yet appropriate for the content of the exhibitiom itself. Consider what type of audience visits art galleries and creative events and what type of identity and promotion they would respond and engage with. 1/5

OUGD303 — Brief 2 / Forces of Nature Concept & Design Direction — After seeing some folded posters in my design context research, I thought it would be great to find my own folds that could be done with paper to create effects on the stock as if it had been crushed and manipulated by natural forces. I researched into different folding techniques and settled on four key folds that would be used on all of the branding and identity throughout. The natural shadows cast by the folds created beautiful tonal greyscale shades which then formed the colour scheme – no black, just white and greys. The sharp and geometric Futura typeface was used for the main titling as the pointy corners matched up well with pointy edges of the folds in the paper. The different folds that were put into pieces of paper were then photographed and lightened and used flat on design work before being printed. This gives a real feel of depth and movement whilst the poster remains in a standard format and completely ledgible. 2/5

OUGD303 — Brief 2 / Forces of Nature Print Collateral — The four different poster images were then cropped and scaled to fit on the other print-based collateral. Heavy grey type and a grey paper spine on the exhibition guide were used to fit within the brand guidelines. The style of the identity is meant to reflect the power of the different forces of nature whilst being subtle enough to show that these forces are often hidden until they erupt. I also attempted to create an identity that was contemporary and sophisticated to suit a modern city gallery host location. 3/5

OUGD303 — Brief 2 / Forces of Nature Flyers & Tickets — Along with the event guide publication, I also designed some flyers and tickets. For both, I applied all four of the different images showing the various folds to break up any predictability. The simple white stock background with large grey type was the used on the reverse side to build consistency across the range. 4/5

OUGD303 — Brief 2 / Forces of Nature Promotion — Finally for the brief I have mocked up some promotional street signage as well as some interior branding for the entrance to the exhibition space. Along with this there is some clean and minimal signage created by using one of the folding techniques on its side in order for it to resemble an arrow. 5/5
