OUGD303 — Brief 3 / Culture Festival The Brief — In collaboration with Stephanie Oglesby, brand and promote a new short-term festival that is based on a certain aspect of contemporary culture. Consider what the subject and content of the festival will be and how it could be promoted. Who would make up the demographic of the target audience? The core identity should be based upon a selected, abstract word that will provide the theme for the festival. All of the branding and identity should reflect this word in interesting and innovative ways to help engage the audience with the project. 1/7

OUGD303 — Brief 3 / Culture Festival Concept & Design Direction — Steph and I came up with the idea of hosting a festival that was based around professionals from different creative fields collaborating to produce a piece of work that they wouldn’t normally do. We would then base the festival around an exhibition and timetable of different events. We widened this out to become a European festival that would theoretically be held in Manchester and then move around to different European cities each year. The brilliant part of this brief and collaboration is that we pretty much worked simultaneously on everything together meaning we are both happy to divide up the work equally and accept an equal amount of credit for what has been produced. I suggested to Steph that we called the project ‘Crossover’ linking to the theme of different creatives ‘crossing over’ paths to create new work. We ran with this theme and I then developed what turned out to be the core identity of the project which involved the ‘x & o’ pattern. We developed the identity further together allowing the brand to be recognisable through one of a range of things. Such as a limited colour palette of black, white, grey and then a salmon coloured stock and then a screen-printed neon version of the salmon. The crossover festival can also be recognised through the pattern, the large ‘x - o’ mark and the title written in full. Different parts of the brand interact and overlap to form a comprehensive and easily identifiable identity for the event. 2/7

OUGD303 — Brief 3 / Culture Festival Event Publication — A comprehensive event publication was designed mainly by myself although Steph came up with some original layout ideas which were taken on and developed. The book features twenty different creative professional from a variety of disciplines that were sourced online to act as content. Each double page shows the two different parties that are to collaborate and a little background to their work. The production of the event publications stick to the branding guidelines and so use only black, white, grey, salmon and the neon. The covers show a laser cut version of the ‘x & o’ pattern with the neon screenprint behind it. The main body of the book is then set on alternating sheets of white and salmon stock with all of the artist imagery being on salmon and the artist descriptions on white. Tracing paper inserts were then added with the names of the artists that are collaborating, with the layering of different stocks meant to reflect the theme of crossing over. 3/7

OUGD303 — Brief 3 / Culture Festival Print Collateral — Alongside the event publication, Steph and I developed a range of suitable print collateral. This featured a hotdog fold booklet made by Steph that acted as a timetable of events, tickets for the different event sessions, neon wristbands for people attending as well as lanyards for event organisers. Furthermore, a set of eight posters were designed combining different elements of the branding which would be to promote the event around the city. 4/7

Final Major Project — Brief 3 / Culture Festival Print Collateral — Small details were considered in the design of the print collateral including the idea I had of the appliying the ‘x & o’ pattern which was laser cut onto the ticket designs to form an alternative perforarted edge to be torn off on entry to the festival. Laser-cutting was also used on the neon wristbands which guests would recieve on entry and the high visibility of the colour is perfect for its intended use. The hotdog booklet features a daily timetable of events for the week and then opens out to show a map of Manchester city centre and the locations of the multiple events that will be ongoing. 5/7

Final Major Project — Brief 3 / Culture Festival Merchandise & Promotion — To expand the range of products, Steph and I screen-printed some promotional merchandise consisting of bags and tshirts. We thought that these would be worn by officals organising the Crossover festival and then would also be sold as gift shop items. The tshirts come in a variety of colours matching the palette used across the branding with a large, neon ‘x & o’ applied. The designs for these pieces were adapted from poster designs and publication pages to keep a strong consistency over the varying product range. 6/7

Final Major Project — Brief 3 / Culture Festival Event Space — To show the event in context we set about mocking up some of the event space with posters mocked up inside and outside the Cornerhouse in Manchester where we have proposed the event to be based. We have also shown an example of how a collaborative piece of work could be shown in a gallery setting. With the branding of the event stretching across the walls and where two lines ‘crossover’, it marks a point where work is displayed. 7/7
