Gree ngs,

A number of the Lodge officers have just returned from the CHEA conven on in San Diego. The first evening started with the opening ceremony followed by a memorial service honoring all members we have lost the past year. The business of receiving annual reports and presenta on of various awards took up a great part of the next day, plus the elec on of CHEA officers for 2015‐2016. On Friday the new officers were installed and a number of seminars on various topics were a ended. Finally, Saturday morning the theme children were introduced. It is children, plural, this year as twin girls were selected. A er that the Exalted Rulers march occurred. I’m proud to report that this Lodge donated a total of $32,785.46 to the major project this year.

I’m also very pleased to announce that Ivan Bishop has volunteered to act as the interim Treasurer, in the mean me. This entails some work twice a week, taking deposits to the bank and signing checks, plus a ending Lodge mee ngs. If you or someone you know is interested and willing to take on this effort on a permanent basis, please contact me.

Some of you may know, but many probably do not, our Leading Knight has been in Japan because his mother‐in‐law was involved in an accident where she suffered a concussion and broken hip. Speaking for Craig, I remind everyone of the Leading Knight’s Gala coming on June 6. The theme is 1940’s Night on the Town. Should be a fun and entertaining evening. So get out those 40’s duds and come on down.

The Building Commi ee has been working diligently with a developer to finalize a working agreement on the Lodge property. We feel we are near the point of signing an agreement, but it will mean moving to a new site for the Lodge. We would s ll retain the apartment property for income.

Come on down to our events! We need everyone’s support and you will enjoy good food and a fun me at every event. We are endeavoring to make them inexpensive as well, but we need member par cipa on!

God bless all our members and our troops home and away. Fraternally, Roger Vulgamore, Exalted Ruler

Hello Fellow Elks & Welcome to a new June, I am looking forward to this month. The calendar brings us the Leading Knights Gala on June 6th. This is sure to be a “Knight on the Town” evening. June 6th is also celebrated as D‐Day (WWII). Our theme for the Gala is, “1940’s Night on the Town”. So find your “Humphry Bogart” overcoat and fedora, or the old G.I. uniform and come in costume. We will have a dinner and dance with the Howard Crossen Band. There will also be a few Casino style tables for you to win some addi onal Raffle Scrip. We will have prizes to raffle off and a 50/50 drawing. Check the lobby for flyers and this months’ ElkHorn for details. Patrick will have his “Steak Fry” dinner on Saturday, June 20th. And our ER, Roger will follow with a fes ve “Father’s Day Brunch” on Sunday, June 21st. Lots of entertaining things are happening this month and we hope you can a end some of them. So come on down and see some old friends, meet the new officers and our new members. Be sure to share any of your ideas and sugges ons with your House Commi ee members and we will get off to a great new start. Fraternally yours, Craig Whaley Leading Knight

The Nomads

RV and Camping Group (Extraordinaire)

Our trip to Lake Elsinore was a great experience and the weather was magnificent. The campground has improved greatly. Our hosts, Jackie and Dave Hudspeth, planned a fun weekend. The first night dinner was provided by our hosts and was delicious. A pot‐luck breakfast awaited us Friday morning. We had the rest of day to ourselves and dinner at the Elks that night. Saturday we piled into our cars and drove to Perris to the Sky Diving School. Yup! We sat through class. However, not one of us chose to jump. However, we watched several try out the wind tunnel. Again, not one of us tried. But we had so much fun watching the others, par cularly the gorgeous young Airmen who were preparing to jump. They were learning how to control their bodies while in flight without a parachute or wing, as they call it. We ladies did a lot of drooling. We then went outside and watched the many, many jumpers. A fun day and learning experience.

The Nomads are looking forward to many future ou ngs:  Santa Maria Rodeo at end of May  Chula Vista ou ng on July 30‐August 2, when we will be taking a tour of the Olympic Village  Julian from September 10‐13  California Elks Rally in Hemet to be held on October 8‐11  Pre‐Thanksgiving ou ng all the way in Newport Dunes in November 15‐19  Post‐Thanksgiving ou ng, held jointly with the Southwind RV group on November 27‐29, at the Lake Elsinore Marina and RV Resort  Christmas Party is December 10, 2015 at the home of Carol & Paul Bostwick.

Remember, “To travel is to live.” (Hans Chris an Andersen) So live a li le and join us; we meet the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm for dinner at the lodge, and have our business mee ng at 7:30 p.m. For more informa on, contact our President, Paul Bostwick

A Domes c Tax Inversion According to Bloomberg Business, more Americans who are living outside the U.S. gave up their ci zenship in the first quarter of 2015 than ever before (see ar cle at h p://bloom.bg/1zOKGM2). The reason is that last year asset disclosure rules under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (“FACTA”) kicked in. FACTA requires U.S. financial ins tu ons to impose a 30 percent withholding tax on payments made to foreign banks that don’t agree to iden fy and provide informa on on U.S. account holders. The new laws, combined with past rules, can make tax filing difficult for U.S. ci zens living overseas who set up trusts. In short, the complexity of the law, increasing tax liability, and the cost of compliance are promp ng U.S. Ci zens to throw in the towel and pledge allegiance to a different flag. The good news is that one does not have to leave building to save taxes. Trusts such as a Nevada Incomplete Gi Non Grantor Trust (also called a “NING”) are gaining in popularity for those residing in high income tax states. The benefit of a NING is that it includes asset produc on along with the elimina on of state income taxes because the trust is located in a state with no income tax. For a California Resident, the savings can be substan al considering that the top marginal state income tax rate in California can reach 13.3%. If a California resident implemented a NING Trust, unrealized capital gains and investment por olio income would be shielded from California income tax under many circumstances. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, no. It is true. The Franchise Tax Board has stated that if a non‐California trustee could make distribu ons in the trustee’s discre on to a California beneficiary, the undistributed income of such trust should not be subject to California tax. You don’t even have to leave California. ‐ Dan Romero, BLT Chairman Santa Ana Elks Lodge Because of the possibility of human or mechanical error by S&P Capital IQ Financial Communica ons or its sources, neither S&P Capital IQ Financial Communica ons nor its sources guarantees the accuracy, adequacy, completeness or availability of any informa on and is not responsible for any errors or omissions or for the results obtained from the use of such informa on. The Elk of the month for June is a lady that performs many, many functions within the Lodge. And with no fanfare. She maintains the member data base as a paid employee, but answers phones, mans the front desk, and just in general does whatever task is necessary to make the Lodge office run smoothly. She assists anyone who requests help, not just officers. Come by and congratulate Barbara Mills the next time you stop by the office.

Scholarship News ~ June 2015

Words cannot adequately express the deepest sorrow and great loss we few feel over the passing of our Elk brother Abelardo (“Abby”) Estacion. Not only has our scholarship program lost an invaluable supporter, but our Lodge has lost a most dedicated ac ve member and friend. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family, loved ones and friends.

Abby was born in the Philippines, served two years in the Navy, went to Pepperdine College under the GI Bill and earned a degree in accoun ng. He worked for 20 years each for two different companies and for 12 more years as a consultant. He received a very good re rement payout from his first company which he sent to his cousin in the Philippines to help his family. His cousin put the money into good investments which gave Abby the funds to start the Estacion Educa onal Founda on in 2004. Each year the Founda on provides scholarships to three boys and three girls who, with few excep ons a end Cavite High School where Abby went to school.

He joined the Santa Ana Elks Lodge October 23, 1990 where he immediately became involved in a variety of ac vi es. He served on the scholarship commi ee, volunteered to help on different projects, played golf with friends from the Elks club and loved to dine and dance at the various Lodges. He always supported special events buying ckets for a table of 10 or more and contribu ng to various fund drives. He received recogni on from the Elks Na onal Founda on for being a “Permanent Benefactor” which is awarded to those making significant contribu ons to the ENF. He never sought recogni on or publicity – just quietly did his giving.

Though there was a me when Abby was declared legally blind, nothing deterred him from his dedica on to helping young high school students achieve a higher educa on. He has been the most generous, though ul, faithful, dedicated donor to our Elks Scholarship program. Whenever a Lodge friend passed away there was always a significant dona on from Abby made in memoriam of that friend. Thanks to Abby’s contribu ons, many members of our Lodge, their children or grandchildren have received scholarships and been able to con nue their college educa on. Abby lives on in their futures.

We wish to thank Abby’s sons, Mark, who has a PhD in biophysics, Richard, a chemist for NASA and Sco , a personnel manager and their families who have requested that any dona ons for Abby be made to the Santa Ana Elks Lodge Scholarship Fund. Again, our deepest sympathy to the Estacion family and may they have comfort in knowing what a wonderful and unique man Abby was.
