It's July! Happy 4th Elkdoms:

As the days go by, keep in mind those who have come no more. Our very own, Larry "coach" Arason, and other Elk members. Also those people who have lost their lives in tragedy. Our Hearts “Swell & Throb” for all of them. These senseless tragedies are very hard to understand. How and why do these things happen? Please remember and be proud of who is gone.

June was such a fun month and a li le trying at mes, but we pushed on. Our VP Visit was one of the greatest mes. We shared a good mes with VP Mr. David Seeley, Captain America. We also presented a picture to our Past State President, Art Echternacht. We now have his picture hanging on the wall above the dignitaries of each ELKDOM year. Thank you Art!

Now the fun ‐ I'm off to the Elks Na onal Conven on in Houston Texas. I will be gone July 3 to July 6. It is my pleasure to represent all you members there this year. I am so glad to be part of this great lodge, Santa Ana Elks Lodge #794. Thank you for allowing me to be your representa ve. It's an Honor.

Fourth of July is our great family picnic. Lots of great food, drinks, snow cones, popcorn and games; make this day fun for all of us. Come celebrate the na on's birthday here on the pa o. There won't be a Kuykendall this year manning the beer or snow cones, but I'll be back next year.

Please check your Elkhorn for all the food during the week. Please come in and taste the new food we have been purchasing. A new supplier, Yum does it taste good. I want to take this me to thank Tomas and his staff for what they do for us. Love them. I ask that you be courteous and say thank you to them. Remember they serve your food. LOL.

Have a wonderful month. Talk to you real soon!

God bless you all, ER ‐ Patrick Kuykendall 2

BINGO!! Oh, that was last month. Welcome to the Chair of the Leading Knight whose mo o is Charity. Ever wonder where the money comes from for us to be the benefactors to the many requests for financial help? Bingo. Because of the hard working folks who give their me each Monday to work Bingo, we gave a li le more than $80,000 last year, fulfilling many of the requests we get from chartable organiza ons in Santa Ana, Irvine and Tus n each year. This year our Charity Commi ee is made up of 5 volunteers who receive, read and discuss these request, then vote to which we’ll contribute. Like I men oned in last month’s ar cle, not all the money raised by Bingo goes to these organiza ons. We s ll need money to keep Bingo running, as well as money for the Dic onary project, our youth sports and some scholarships. But the largest por on of this money goes to those asking us for help. Currently Brian Koss is the Commi ee Chair. Suzi Brown, Valerie Fisher, Lila Foster and Claire Heaney cons tute the remaining 4 posi ons. Each month they receive le ers from organiza ons big and small, reques ng support. As the Leading Knight, Charity is a Commi ee under my Chair. As a non‐vo ng member, I have requested that the Commi ee concentrate this year on more of our local, smaller organiza ons, in lieu of the na onwide organiza ons like Meals‐on‐Wheels, Braille Ins tute and other such large organiza ons. Some of these larger organiza ons do have chapters in the ci es we support, and we will con nue to help them, but if not, I have asked our group to look closer to home and let the other lodges support those chapters in their communi es.

K

I have only been a member for 11 years, and wondered where the charity money went. Several years ago I remember hearing a list of some of organiza ons to which we were dona ng. We were told a li le about these organiza ons and the amount we were giving. Then Claire started asking these organiza ons to come to the floor of the lodge to tell us a li le about what they do and to be personally presented with their checks. As a member I really liked that interac on. Actually seeing and hearing where, and what, our money was being used for and more about that organiza on. I am not sure who started this, but it was my first experience with that and a tradi on that will con nue through my term as Leading Knight. One such recipient will be at our Lodge on August 9th with their K‐9’s. Should be a fun evening.

I hope this helps you be er understand a li le about our Charity Commi ee and how our funds are distributed. And like any of our commi ees, you can always come sit in on a mee ng, or be er yet, volunteer to become a member of a commi ee. There are many of them looking for Commi ee Chairs and members. Is it me you stepped up, talk to the Officer whose Chair that Commi ee is under and remember why you became a member in the first place; to do good for our communi es.

August 1st

We need Backpacks by or before the August 18th Business Mee ng

Let me close by saying thanks to those that have dipped your toe into the volunteering pool of Bingo, but as my buddy Marvin says, ‘We can always use more help at Bingo!’ So true.

Un l next month, I remain, Fraternally yours, Buck Kuhns, Esteemed Leading Knight 3

He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.

Patrick Kuykendall

Hello everyone, and welcome to the month of July! I hope to see ALL of you at the July 4th Pa o BBQ. As we celebrate the 240th anniversary of our GREAT NATION!

I greatly appreciate the support that has been shown thus far from the Members, Commi ee Chairpersons, and Officers on behalf of the NEW MEMBERS on Orienta on Night. Please con nue to support the Growth of our Lodge and our membership!

The Elks Lodge is a Charitable, Volunteer run, organiza on. WE need your help. Please consider helping out as a volunteer.

Lastly, we lost a long me, hard‐working, Loyal Brother ELK last month. A man who educated, mentored, and set an example for all the young lives that he touched. Larry was a friend, ELK brother, and Father figure to so many. RIP Larry Arason, you will be deeply missed, but never forgo en! Your Esteemed Loyal Knight, Allen Bisbee

Hello Elkdom: It's summer, a me to spend with family and friends outdoors. I hope you all join us in celebra ng the 4th of Allen Bisbee July. Enjoy the weather with fellow Elks, BBQ food and lots of games for kids. God bless you,

I was honored to experience the Wally Deitrich awards Allen Bisbee ceremony with Larry Arason. I am deeply saddened of his Lecturing Knight passing. He will be remembered and missed for the huge impact he made in our community and with the kids he encouraged to succeed.

I want to thank Daisy Troop 3647 for coming in and par cipa ng in our Flag Day Program. They are very cute and I'm so happy they are a part of our Lodge.

As always, I encourage you all to treat one another with kindness, respect and brotherly love.

Suzi Brown Esteemed Lecturing Knight

Thank you to the many who have contributed food, toiletries and cards.

As you can see from the picture, we made a trip to The Veteran’s Hospital of Long Beach to play Bingo with the Veterans. The handiwork of the Ladies from The Groves was well appreciated. We took them 50 lap blankets, 40 knit caps, and some cash money for their Bingo winnings. Pictured are Dick Reger, Brian Yeandle, and Valerie Fisher. It is always a fun night helping the Veterans play Bingo and paying out the money for their winnings! Some of the lap blankets, knit caps and sugar free cookies were distributed to the Veterans who are unable to come to the big room to play. Thanks for your support.

One of the many rewards of working with the scholarship program is receiving feedback from students who have been awarded an Elk Scholarship. Here are two email messages I received which would best be shared with our members.

Joseph Kim, a student at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, and our first place Most Valuable Student (MVS) winner in the 2016‐2017 boys division wrote:

NEWS! JULY 2016

“I just received word from the Elks Na onal Founda on that I've finished with semi‐ finalist standing at the na onal level for the Most Valuable Student scholarship. Moving on through the different levels of this process with your support has been a life‐changing experience and I want to thank you and the lodge with deepest gra tude for the opportunity to represent our region. Thank you so much for helping me in my academic pursuits with your generosity and support; I will be sure to keep you updated on my college decisions in the coming months! Sincerely, Joseph Kim”

Joseph Kim received $2,000 from our lodge’s MVS contest, $400 from district judging, $3,500 from state judging and, as a semi‐finalist on the na onal level, was awarded an addi onal $4,000. That is a total of $9,900 !!! Joseph will be a ending UC Berkeley this fall where he plans to major in sociology.

The following message was sent by Kaitlin Wilmot’s mother, Shan Wilmot.

“I have been thinking about you lately, and thought you might be interested in an update on Kaitlin’s college decision. She has finally decided to a end Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH for the next four years, majoring in Chemical Engineering. We are very happy with her choice, and she received a substan al scholarship to boot! With your personal interest in engineering, I thought you would enjoy hearing about her decision. We are so grateful to you for your support and encouragement, and to the Awards Commi ee for selec ng her for the Lenz Scholarship. This will be a big help to her next year. We will be sure to have the forms filled out and sent to you in a mely way! Thanks again, Shan Wilmot.”

Kaitlin Wilmot, sponsored by her grandfather, Robert McCalla, was awarded a $2,500 LENZ Scholarship from our lodge. I just learned that Kaitlin was recently selected as valedictorian at the Orange County School of the Arts senior award night. Congratula ons, Kaitlin !!! Marie a Parkinson, Scholarship Chair 10

Advance Direc ves: Planning Ahead for Your Own Care As a reminder, advisors using and customizing pre‐approved materials must read and adhere to the policies found in sec on 15.26.3 of the Advisor Compli‐ ance Manual.

Descrip on: Who will make cri cal decisions regarding your health care if you are unable to do so?

Synopsis: An advance direc ve is a wri en statement that you complete in advance of a serious illness. Generally speaking, this document names someone to act on your behalf or outlines how you want medical decisions to be made when you are no longer able to do so. Some types of advance direc ves may be able to do more for you than others, so it is important to know the differences.

The two most common forms of advance direc ves are a living will and a durable power of a orney for health care (commonly referred to as a "health care proxy"). Before you talk to a lawyer about what type of advance direc ve may be best for you, you can save substan al me by understanding the types of issues the document should cover.

Keep in mind that advance direc ves should not be confused with financial direc ves. In addi on, advance direc ves are not financial documents. However, it is possible that some advance direc ves may be packaged with other estate planning docu‐ ments.

Key Points

Why a Health Care Proxy? Know the Poten al Drawbacks (Aug Elkhorn) Points to Remember (Aug Elkhorn)

A Proxy for Your Money Collect Your Thoughts (Aug Elkhorn)

You may not want to think about it, but it is vital that you do ‐‐ you may someday face a sudden health crisis due to an acci‐ dent or serious illness that leaves you unable to make your own medical decisions. Fortunately, there is a legal means to ad‐ dressing this poten al future concern ‐‐ it's called an advance direc ve.

An advance direc ve is a wri en statement that you complete in advance of a serious illness. Generally speaking, this docu‐ ment names someone to act on your behalf or outlines how you want medical decisions to be made when you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself. Some types of advance direc ves may be able to do more for you than others, so it is im‐ portant to know the differences.

Keep in mind that advance direc ves should not be confused with financial direc ves (such as a durable power of a orney ‐‐ see sidebar A Proxy for Your Money). In addi on, advance direc ves are not financial documents. However, it is possible that during a visit with an a orney to discuss financial and estate planning affairs, advance direc ves may be discussed and in some cases packaged together with other documents (e.g., wills, trusts, etc.).

Why a Health Care Proxy? The two most common forms of advance direc ves are a living will and a durable power of a or‐ ney for health care (commonly referred to as a health care proxy). A living will can explain ‐‐ in wri ng ‐‐ the care you wish to receive (or avoid) in the event you are incapacitated by a terminal illness or serious accident. For instance, it can express your wishes for controlling pain, receiving nutri on, or making life‐support decisions.

But unlike a living will, a health care proxy allows you to legally designate someone ‐‐ a proxy ‐‐ to make medical decisions for you. Keep in mind that in some states you may even be able to combine a health care proxy and living will into a single docu‐ ment.

Hospitals and nursing homes are required to ask about the existence of any advance direc ve when you are admi ed. In most states, a health care proxy does not take effect un l you can no longer make medical decisions for yourself; un l then, only you can legally consent to any treatment. In addi on, you can always change or cancel the document as long as you are men‐ tally alert. If you decide to make changes to any of these documents, be sure to do so in wri ng.

A comprehensive health care advance direc ve combines both a health care proxy and living will into one document. Organi‐ za ons such as AARP, American Bar Associa on (ABA), and the American Medical Associa on (AMA) have joined forces to cre‐ ate a simple, yet comprehensive, form.

This informa on is not intended to be a subs tute for specific individualized legal advice. We suggest that you discuss your specific situa on with a qualified legal advisor.

July 30th ‐ Casino Night @ Orange Elks Lodge Saturday, August 27th ‐ Long Beach Boat Cruise Further details to follow on all of these events. Con nua on of Ar cle by Leading Knight, Buck Kuhns in June’s Issue of the ElkHorn Bingo deposited $12,074.00 for the month of April and $14,219.50 for May. This all goes to Charity except for supplies.

Dona ons from the Bingo players to the Major Project (Purple Pig) was $597.78 for the month of April and $954.81 for May.

On Monday, June 6th, 162 people a ended Bingo and we had only 15 volunteers. We deposited $3,727.50, plus $188.37 which was donated from the players to the Purple Pig. It takes 22 volunteers to properly run Bingo so you can just imagine how hard those 15 people had to work.

Out of approximately 770 members, we have a total of 27 volunteering for Bingo. Many of the 27 are working every week just to keep Bingo going. This commitment is becoming a drain on all of them. We desperately need YOUT help. We CANNOT Bingo with so few volunteers. Please consider dona ng some of your me. Even one night a month would help tremendously. Remember...without Bingo, there would be no Charity. Marvin Hobbs, Chairman ‐ Linda Fernandez, Co‐Chairman Dorothy O'Neal, Co‐Chairman

We were glad to see that our fellow Elks brought in their Purple Pigs full of coins! It warms our hearts, and I’m sure yours as well, the compassion and love Elks have for our Major Project. RV AND CAMPING GROUP

We have outdone ourselves: two ou ngs in May/June! We know how to have fun! At Rancho Jurupa in May, our hosts were the Goetzs and Hudspeths. They took us to a lovely campground. Aside from all the wonderful meals, potlucks, Happy Hours, etc. all enjoyed a blast from the past: Miniature Golf! Our one and only Joyce Bryant hit a hole in one, while Betsy Davis sent her ball off the bridge. Oh dear, poor Betsy. At the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo, we all got to dress up in our best Western Wear to enjoy steaks at Jocko’s, dinner at the Far Western and the many fine meals prepared by the Rodeo staff. What a great job they do. We also saw the parade downtown, watched the Rodeo, and enjoyed the Santa Maria area. This is a great ou ng, thanks to the Santa Maria Elks and our hosts, Mike and Garlin Flynn. Future fun includes ou ngs to Chula Vista during the summer, Julian in September, Hemet Elks Rally in October, and our pre‐and post Thanksgiving ou ngs in Lake Elsinore and Newport Dunes. Our fabulous Christmas Party will be in December at the Bostwicks’ home which has become our party house. If your RV is spending more me in storage than on the road, come on out and join us! We’d love to meet you. Our mee ngs are the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm for dinner at the lodge, and have our business mee ng at 7:30 p.m. For more informa on, contact our President, Garlin Flynn.

We got on the freeway and made our way to the desert of Palm Springs for a Sinatra Tribute Tour put on by the Santa Ana Elks Travel Club. The weather couldn't have been any be er for such a trip. Our first stop was to the Palm Springs Visitors Center to pick up our tour guide. We then proceeded in town where we saw the homes of Frank Sinatra and his friends. A er that we had a wonderful lunch at Sinatra’s favorite place, Melvyn’s Restaurant. The tour con nued with a visit to Sinatra’s final res ng place and ended with a rest stop at Hadley’s Fruit Stand. Thank you Jim Tobin for pu ng on an excellent trip and thanks to Dan and Be y Walker for being our host that day.

Fellow Elks,

Over the next 4 months, star ng in July, you will find what we hope will be soon exci ng new changes to our Tuesday and Wednesday dinner menus. Each Tuesday, in addi on to our standard entrees, you will find a SPECIAL; it may be beef ribs or asada street tacos, or chicken fried steak with corn on the cob. Each Tuesday will be different. And yes, by popular demand, there will be liver and onions. We will con nue our themed dinners on Wednesdays but with a greater variety. How about carnitas tacos, shrimp tostadas, or stuffed pork chops with pan fried potatoes and applesauce? Or maybe Asian night, with orange chicken and mongolian beef. Pizza and schnitzel are coming back along with bar specials in great Emblem Club desserts.
