Message from Exalted Ruler

Buck Kuhns It’s gonna be a great year! I welcome you to the chair of the Exalted Ruler. My First Lady extraordinaire has planned a wonderful February 10th Sweetheart Ball for our members. She has a good choice of entrees and an entertainer booked that can play any type of music, so everyone should be pleased. Hope to see you all there. We are still in the process of closing escrow and I sure hope that happens this month. We are also still working on finding a temporary home while our new lodge gets built. As this article is written in early January, I don’t have the answer yet, but rest assured, we’re working very had to secure that interim lodge. Keep asking questions and with any luck I’ll have some good news to share by the time this hits the presses. Last year as Leading Knight, I asked the Charity Committee to begin asking the organizations that we support, to come into the lodge to share with us a little about their charity. I did this mainly so we members can better understand what charities we’re supporting. Of course the big one is the Police dogs. But we also get a lot of very interesting groups coming in and sharing their stories. Having said that, we had 4 groups come in to receive their checks from Committee Chair Bill Fratze, at our January 9th meeting. This is one of the most disappointing showing of members since I’ve been an officer. It was embarrassing to have these groups talking to 8 members. People! When we have meeting like this, where we are presenting Charity money, Scholarships or sports trophies, it would sure be nice to see more butts in the seats. The recipients were very nice in giving their presentation to such a small group, but like I said, to me it was embarrassing. Let’s see if we can’t do better for these types of presentations. I have had several folks mention to me that some of the information in the Elkhorn isn’t correct. We try our best to make sure we keep our members up-to-date, but we have no way of alerting some members of changes that occur. Remember, we submit items for the next month’s Elkhorn by the 10th of each month. A lot can and does happen after that date, so we attempt best we can to notify folks of these changes. We use email and Facebook as methods to update members, but many of you don’t receive these. Why? One big reason is your email address we have on file isn’t correct. We can’t keep in touch with you if we don’t have the correct information. It is your responsibility to keep the office updated on any contact information that has changed: email addresses, phone numbers and/or home addresses. Help us help you to keep informed. Remember to notify the office when something changes. Did you know that February 16th is the Elk’s 150th birthday? Yup… it is. We’re going to be celebrating on our Birthday Thursday, February 15th. See the flyer in the Elkhorn for all the particulars. It’s going to be fun, so please come join us celebrate this milestone. Last thing I would like to mention that is coming up in February, is the election of your 2018-2019 officers. This is one of the most important votes you, as a member, can participate in. It’s this vote where you can show your support to your lodge by placing the best people in these positions. You can’t complain if you don’t participate in the nomination and election of YOUR officers. Come to the meetings and support your nominees. Hope to see you and your friends at the lodge. Buck, your Exalted Ruler and King of the Long Bar

DECORATING COMMITTEE At last, the Sale of the Century (items

Greetings to everyone,

from our current lodge) is going to start!

Did you know that Friday Nights at 794 have been exciting and fun. Elks and friends (potential members) have been gathering together mixing and mingling. Last month DJ Lenny Alvarado was here playing some great tunes. Everyone had a great time listening to the music and dancing; not to mention the great candy bar Annette and Maria put together. It was a Candyland Adventure Night. On nights that we don’t have a DJ, we all pop money in the Juke Box and have a great time. And there is line dancing every Friday. Have you forgotten that the 3rd Wednesday of the month is Pasta and Potato Night. Where can you go for a $7.00 pasta dinner. The pasta is made to order with your choice of sauce and meat toppings. It comes with garlic bread and salad. Then there is the ginormous baked potato with wonderful toppings for just $5.00. Come down and support the Purple Pig Major Project “PIG RACES.”

In regard to the Elks' 11 O'Clock Toast and its origin, we have to go back long before the BPOE came into existence. One of the main contributions of Charles Richardson -- in stage name of Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian and founder of the American branch of the Jolly Corks -- was to deliver into the hands of newborn Elks the rituals and traditions of a fraternal organization started in England around 1010 A.D., the Royal and Antedeluvian Order of Buffaloes, to which he belonged prior to coming to New York. The RAOB, or Buffaloes as we shall henceforth refer to them, also practiced an 11 o'clock toast in remembrance of the Battle of Hastings in October of 1066. Following his victory, William of Normandy imported a set of rules, both martial and civil in nature, to keep control of a seething Norman-Saxon population always on the edge of a revolution. Among those rules was a curfew law requiring all watch fires, bonfires (basically all lights controlled by private citizens that could serve as signals) to be extinguished at 11 each night. From strategically placed watchtowers that also served as early fire-alarm posts, the call would go out to douse or shutter all lights and bank all fires. This also served to discourage secret and treasonous meetings, as chimney sparks stood out against the black sky. A person away from his home and out on the darkened streets, when all doors were barred for the night, risked great peril from either evildoers or patrolling militia. The hour of 11 quickly acquired a somber meaning, and in the centuries that followed, became the synonym throughout Europe for someone on his deathbed or about to go into battle: i.e."His family gathered about his bed at the 11th hour," or "The troops in the trenches hastily wrote notes to their families as the 11th hour approached when they must charge over the top. Thus, when the 15 Jolly Corks (of whom seven were not native-born Americans) voted on February 16, 1868, to start a more formal and official organization, they were already aware of an almost universally prevalent sentiment about the mystic and haunting aura connected with the nightly hour of 11, and it took no great eloquence by Vivian to establish a ritual toast similar to that of the Buffaloes at the next-to-last hour each day. The great variety of 11 O’Clock Toasts, including the Jolly Corks Toast, makes it clear that there was no fixed and official version until 1906-10. Given our theatrical origins, it was almost mandatory that the pre-1900 Elks would be expected to compose a beautiful toast extemporaneously at will. Regardless of the form, however, the custom is as old as the Elks.

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on. Robert Frost

Elks Partner with "Donate Life America" In their Organ & Tissue Donation Program The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA has joined forces with Donate Life America to increase donations of organs, eyes and life-saving tissue. The Grand Lodge, Lodge Activities/State Associations Committee is asking Elks Lodges nationwide to promote the Organ Donor Program in their Lodge Bulletins and Lodge Web sites to help inspire members and citizens in their communities to make these lifesaving donations. The need is paramount. More than 110,000 patients were waiting for organ transplants as of March 2011, according to the Donate life America Website, http:// www.donatelife.net Only 28,663 organ transplants had been performed in 2010, and even fewer - 14,502 - organ donations had been made in that year. We Elks Members can help close the gap! The effort of Lodges to promote the program through their Bulletins and Web site can gain them five points in their quests to be named an All American Lodge. More incentives will be announced in coming years as the program takes shape throughout Elkdom. For more information on the importance of donation and how to become a registered donor in your state, click on the Donate Life icon to go to the Donate LifeSM web-site, or by logging onto http:// www.donatelife.net This is a great way to show that "Elks Give from the Heart." .
