Message from Exalted Ruler

Buck Kuhns It’s gonna be a great year! I welcome you to the chair of the Exalted Ruler. Did you make it to Oktoberfest, Italian Night or the Elk’s Picnic at the Zoo? If not, you missed three good events. We try to provide event options to fit every member’s desires, but you need to attend if you want us to continue to offer these events in the future. November we will be hosting the Emblem State President’s Homecoming on the 18th. Come out and support our own Evelyn Godinez’s Homecoming. And if you haven’t made your reservations for Thanksgiving yet, give the office a call and reserve a table for your entire family. Why cook when you can enjoy a yummy turkey and ham dinner, with all the trimmings, cooked and served by our own Santa Ana staff? Take the day off and enjoy dinner with your Elk brothers and sisters. Although it’s not an event, please plan on attending our Veteran’s Day Program on the 14th. It is an open meeting and your Inner Guard, Mike Flynn, has planned a very nice program to honor all our Veterans. And we will be hosting several Veterans’ from the Broadway Vet’s house, which we help to sponsor. Look at the calendar in the Elkhorn and see what else you might attend… there are lots of options out there. Like Monday Night Football. Look for the November menu inside. See what Jamie and Tahnee are cooking up on Monday Night’s while enjoying the game. One more that I would like to talk about is decorating our lodge for Christmas. We will be decorating on both Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th. It would really be great if you could spare a couple of hours to come down on either, or both days, and lend a hand to make your lodge beautiful for Christmas. Come be one of Santa’s helpers.

Something new: Speaking of Santa’s Helpers, how would you like to be sporting the “Santa’s Helper” pin? How do I get one Buck? Glad you asked. Bring in three new members, and you’ll become one of Santa’s helper’s, which also gets you the stylish pin. Be the first on your block to earn one. Let me put in my monthly plug for volunteers. We have lost several of our regular volunteers, and could use some help. Our little Dorothy O’Neal has been having some health issues, and has to slow down. This leaves a BIG hole in our lodge. She volunteers for Bingo, as well as working in the Office. Anyone out there wanna step up and help fill that HUGE void? We are really in need of your help, more than ever. As always, please take a look at your calendar and see if you can’t spare one or more Monday’s a month to help at Bingo. Or a morning once a week to help in the office. I keep telling you it’s a great feeling. Try it! I think you’ll like it and will be hooked. One last thing before I close… I heard that ‘Finally’! I know that folks like to think of our lodge as a Country Club, which it can be. But please remember, unlike a Country Club, we have a staff that work hard to put together good meals and excellent service. Please don’t forget to show your appreciation by leaving a tip. Unlike a Country Club, your dues do not go to compensate this service. These folks work for minimum wage and all tips help to supplement that wage. Please let them know, by leaving a tip, that you acknowledge how they are making your visit to the lodge more enjoyable. It’s gonna be a great year, but as I say most months, it takes all of us to achieve that goal. Come to the Lodge!! Volunteer!! Be an active Elk, it’s why you joined. Your Exalted Ruler and King of the Long Bar, Buck Kuhns

Message from Leading Knight

Allen Bisbee My Fellow Elks… I am running full speed ahead trying to remain on the coat tails of our Exalted Ruler. Believe it or not— it is no easy task . Despite the fact that I am 6’ 5” and Buck is all of 5’ and some change. Speaking of CHANGE - this year Christmas Tree Lane on Friday night is going to be for the “FAMILY.” Yes I said for the family! Bring the KIDS! Our menu will include something for them to eat , there will be a craft table, Santa … and more. Not to mention this will be the last Christmas Tree Lane on “Elk Lane” so don’t miss it. Joyce Bryant and her helpers are working very hard putting together some beautiful trees you don’t want to miss. Now is the time to come together and support one another and Lodge794. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Your Esteemed Leading Knight, Allen Bisbee

This has been a busy and challenging year for your House Committee. We have dealt with many issues including trying new recipes and making dishes with fresh vegetables and new cooking techniques. We hope that you have noticed a “fresh” change in some of the dishes being presented and are always open to suggestions from any and all members. There is always a continued need for volunteers to work in the office at the front desk. There are several shifts available and if you would like to volunteer to answer phones and take reservations, the shifts are for four hours – Tuesday through Friday– one in the morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and one in the afternoon 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. You will receive a free lunch for your efforts each day you work. It is an easy way to get to know members that you may never have the chance to know. If you are interested, please contact Barbara Mills or Jim Tobin in the Secretary’s Office Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. (Note: not all days and times are vacant so please check with the office to see when your help would be needed.) We now have a Bar Manager, Paul Stupy, who is working very hard to schedule bartenders to serve you. Thanks Paul for a great job! The House Committee and The Trustees have voted to hire a Human Resources firm to help with our insurance and employee issues. We look forward to start working with them to help our Lodge run as smoothly as possible. We are entering the busiest time of the year – Halloween through Christmas. There are many wonderful events planned for your enjoyment and hope that you take advantage of all that is available to you as a member. Christmas Tree Lane events are, of course, the most attended and popular with the Lodge decorated as beautiful as ever. Check your calendar to see when the decorating will commence in November and consider helping, as we never seem to have enough hands. Have a wonderful November and hope to see you at the Lodge! Fellow Elks, For the month of November lets pause and give thanks for our personal blessings as well as others. Be grateful for your friends and family in your life as well as your Elk family. We are a part of a great organization and although we may not all be the same, we need to embrace each other with respect. Always providing an inviting atmosphere for all members. Being a part of the lodge is a privilege. Let's make it the best experience for all of us. A very smart lady gave me some advise. She said to always smile and greet every member with a compassionate heart. I will do my best to make her proud. With that said let's get those new members in!!! We will be hosting a 1st Annual New Member Party on Friday, November 10th. Feel free to contact me directly for details.

Suzi Brown, Esteemed Loyal Knight SANTA ANA ELKS NEW LODGE INTERIOR DECORATING COMMITTEE Even without meetings things are proceeding with our move to our new facility. We are planning to hold a HUGE yard sale to be held right around the time we vacate our current premises. In addition, we will also be conducting a “Silent Auction” for items prior to the Yard Sale of the Century. Those of you who have expressed interest in items will see that your names will appear first for those items at the Silent Auction. We have lots to sell, so don’t be shy. If there are any items in our lodge that you would like to own, now is the time to let us know. Please email me or put a note in the Renovators’ box in the lodge office. Hello Elk Family,

Allen Bisbee

I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who attended the Santa Ana Elks Picnic at the Zoo. It was a wonderful day with beautiful weather. Everyone enjoyed the zoo and the food.

Don’t forget about Monster Mash Halloween Party! Boy did we have fun and what great costumes everyone had on. Congratulations to the winners of the Halloween Costume Contest! BIG THANK YOU goes out to all my volunteers who assisted me in these two events. The Halloween Party decorations were fantastic; I couldn’t have done it without you. These months have been ticking away and the end of 2017 is near. With that thought in mind, come down and join your Fellow Elks for a delicious Elks Breakfast and socializing before this year ends! Let’s make November 2017 a month to remember! As Always thank you for your support! You’re Lecturing Knight, Vianey Cortez

NEWS! November 2017 The deadline for submitting applications for the Most Valuable Student Scholarship is November 27, 2017. If you have or know of a high school senior interested in pursuing a college education, please have him/her go to www.elks.org/enf/ scholars/mvs.cfm to obtain an application. Our lodge awards six scholarships in this category. As we await word regarding the Most Valuable Student Scholarship applications I would like to call your attention to a CHEA scholarship which often goes without many applicants. The Vocational Grant Program was the topic of an article in a recent CHEA publication. Following is an excerpt of that article written by David Coleman, CHEA Scholarship Chairman. The candidate must be planning to pursue an eligible vocational/technical course resulting in a certificate or two-year degree and leading to employment opportunities. The program is open to male and female applicants who will be judged on an equal basis. While graduating high school seniors may apply, it is not limited to high school students – in fact, it is open to all prospective students who require training or retraining to compete in the workplace. The Vocational Grant is for one academic year, with an option to renew for one additional year. This grant may be used only for usual and required costs of student’s course of study; that is, for tuition and fees, room and board (if living on campus), and books and supplies. Payment will be made to the school. Awards will be between $500 and $2,000 for an academic year depending on length of course. The definition of an eligible program shall be comparable to that contained in the federal vocational legislation. That is defined as a two-year or less vocational/technical program culminating in a terminal Associate degree, diploma or certificate, but less than a baccalaureate program (Bachelor’s degree). Students planning to transfer to a four year school to pursue a Bachelor’s degree are not eligible to apply. A student must plan to attend school on a full-time basis for a minimum of sixty days. An academic year is determined to be a minimum of nine (9) months (approximately 39 weeks) of continuous full-time study. Payments may not be used to cover retroactive charges and may only be applied to expenses in the academic year. Applications must be filed with the Scholarship Chairman, Exalted Ruler, or Secretary of the Elks Lodge having jurisdiction in the area of the student’s legal residence. An application may only be filed with one lodge. For more information visit the CHEA website at: chea-elks.org/youth-activities/scholarships Lawrence Arriaga and Jerry Unis have joined the scholarship committee. We look forward to working with them. Thanks to the following for their donations to the scholarship fund: Tracy Smith, Suzy Brown, Lex Adams, Marietta Parkinson and Rose Dennis. Thelma Myers made a generous donation to the scholarship fund in memory of her sister-inlaw, Betty Ashburn. Each donation is greatly appreciated.

Renovators/Decorating Committee Now that Fall is fast approaching, just a quick reminder that the Renovators/ Decorating Committee will once again be selling See’s Candy for Christmas. Please remember that this is a fundraiser. We don’t make a lot of money, but whatever we make will help us in our new location and will be used for any “extras” that we find we need. More details to follow…and Thanks for your support. Charity Committee Update Spotlight: O.C. Coastal Puppy Raisers “The world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.” This month’s Charity Committee spotlights one of our lodge’s cutest, cuddliest charities; O.C. Coastal Puppy Raisers. This organization started in 2013 and has a handful of volunteers who bring puppies into their homes to raise and train them as guide dogs. So someday they will become their master’s eyes and their most supportive companion. The funds that our Lodge donates goes to both training and materials. The organization trains individuals how to raise the puppies so that the pups learn basic obedience, good manners, and socialization. They also take the puppies on outings so that the pups are exposed to a variety of situations, places, and people – like the grocery store, school, work, restaurants, malls, banks, public transit, and doctor’s appointments – which they will likely encounter with their future masters. Funds also go to the dogs’ harnesses and daily living costs. The organization’s motto is “Raise a puppy, change a life.” Guide dogs do not just lead a person from point A to point B. They are empowering. They provide a sense of independence and confidence. They are transformative healers and best friends. They help people live fuller lives. Our lodge is proud to support this organization which provides a life-changing companion completely free of charge to blind men and women through the United States and Canada.

Santa Ana Emblem Club #530 As summer turned into fall and schools resumed classes, the Emblem ladies were busy. At their September meeting, 968 backpacks were collected along with pens, paper and pencils. These were delivered to the Salvation Army and were distributed in the local area. Linda Fernandez did an outstanding job of coordinating the efforts for Operation Hope. t is a blessing to be able to encourage students in their academic efforts. The Emblem Club and the Elks again joined forces to say thank you to the veterans at the Broadway House. A home cooked meal is always appreciated. It was a time of fellowship and a way to say thank you to all that the veterans have done. Valeria Fisher oversaw the Emblem contributions. Upcoming Events: •

November 16 - Eileen Yeandle Veterans Underware Shower

November 18 - We are honored to have our own, Evelyn Godinez as State President of CNHSAEC. We invite you to join us for her homecoming,

Elks Partner with "Donate Life America" in their Organ & Tissue Donation Program The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA has joined forces with Donate Life America to increase donations of organs, eyes and life-saving tissue. The Grand Lodge, Lodge Activities/State Associations Committee is asking Elks Lodges nationwide to promote the Organ Donor Program in their Lodge Bulletins and Lodge Web sites to help inspire members and citizens in their communities to make these life-saving donations. The need is paramount. More than 110,000 patients were waiting for organ transplants as of March 2011, according to the Donate life America Website, http://www.donatelife.net Only 28,663 organ transplants had been performed in 2010, and even fewer - 14,502 - organ donations had been made in that year. We Elks Members can help close the gap! The effort of Lodges to promote the program through their Bulletins and Web site can gain them five points in their quests to be named an All American Lodge. 20 Dear Elks, We are strolling into the Holiday Season and gearing up for all the festivities coming our way. Both here at 794 and those with our families. Let’s be mindful of all that we have to be thankful for and remember to keep our families, friends and fellow Elks close to our hearts. Ladies - if you didn’t attend Santa Ana’s First Ladies Pajama Party you missed out. OH BOY - was it FUN! It was great to see Elks and Friends from Mission Viejo, Newport Harbor and Orange; thanks for joining us.
