Gladys (91) prepares to Relay Gladys Cromer from Toomevara got cancer in 1965, at the age of 44. At the time, she had a young family and her husband, John, was extremely ill. She says that she did not have time to think about herself – only to concentrate on getting better to look after her husband and family. However, she did have to have a mastectomy and radium treatment. Widowed two years later, she did survive and has lived a busy and healthy life for the past 47 years. She now says that it is nice to let people see that there is a life beyond cancer. Her daughter Lillian says that throughout all the years, Gladys would always make a point of calling people she knew of who got cancer to give them encouragement and hope. Last year, Gladys was the oldest person to take part in Relay for Life which was held in St Michael’s GAA grounds in Toomevara, an event to raise awareness of cancer issues and to provide hope and practical support to cancer sufferers, their families and communities. She says that she agrees wholeheartedly with the themes of Relay – to celebrate those who have survived cancer, to remember those who did not, and to fight back by providing research and support. Full of life and fun, when I
met her she was proudly wearing her purple survivors’ T-shirt from last year’s event. She said she was very happy and honoured to take part in Relay, and added: “it’s nice to show people you are still alive”! She had great fun at the event – “waving to everyone the queen”! The candles of hope all around the track were lovely, and she also enjoyed the bands and the entertainment. This year she hopes to take part in Relay for Life again on August 24th/25th, again in Toomevara – “I would hate to miss it”, she says. Gladys’ message is that there can be life after cancer and she would like to give that hope to everybody – sufferers and their families. And she encourages everybody to become involved with Relay for Life and to come along on the last weekend of August.

The Source Arts Centre is hosting I want to sing!, a renowned singing camp aimed at ages 10-16 year olds under the tuition of Choral Academy Ireland’s Jim Maley from Monday August 13th to Friday August 17th. This fantastic experience gives students a chance to learn about the voice under professional tuition, how it works and how to get the most out of it. The Choral Academy teaches you to sing as part of a group in harmonies and solos. Everyone gets a specialized singing lesson to cater for the individual needs of your voice. You will perform songs from composers and artists like U2, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, some not so
familiar and even a couple of surprises! The aim of the camp is to give the individual invaluable training and a lot of confidence that they can apply to every aspect of life. At the end of the week there will be a fantastic free concert where all participants can showcase their new found talents on stage to family and friends. HURRY! Get Mortgage Interest Relief before it disappears It is time to act if you are a First Time Buyer and would like to save up to €30,000 on the purchase of your first property. Beware - this first time buyer relief is time limited and will end December 2012. In a surprise move Minister Noonan has increased the relief for First Time Buyers who buy a home in 2012 For prospective First Time Buyers, Budget 2012 has increased mortgage interest relief to 25%. It was widely expected that mortgage interest relief would be gone altogether for new First Time Buyers so this is an unexpected but welcome bonus. For a new 2012 First Time Buyer mortgage of €200,000 on an interest rate of 4.5% this will mean a monthly interest relief payment of €188 back to you. This is a big incentive for First Time Buyers to buy in 2012 Now the boring stuff: How is this calculated? Mortgage interest relief is granted on the interest portion of your monthly mortgage repayment. Say, for example you are paying €1,000 a month on mortgage payments. This
is made up of capital payment (say €600) and interest payments (say €400). Depending on the amount of the loan, the term of the mortgage and the interest rate, the split between the capital and interest portions can vary from all of it being interest (on an interest only mortgage) or practically all of it being capital repayments (when you finally get to pay off the mortgage). Important: mortgage interest relief is only available on the interest part of your monthly mortgage payment – not the whole amount. See Example below………….. Example 1 Mary, who is single and a first-time buyer takes out a qualifying home loan to purchase a house before the 31st December 2012 She is entitled to the following tax relief until 31sst December 2017.

Tipperary GAA Scene By Ger Ryan PRO All Ireland Senior Football Championship Commiserations to the Tipperary senior footballers and management team on their defeat by 1-13 to 0-11 to Down in last Saturday’s All Ireland senior football championship qualifier Round 4 game at Mullingar. While it was very disappointing to lose, the players, management and backroom team can be very proud of their performance in this year’s championship. They represented the county with pride, determination and plenty of skill. The future is worth looking forward to and hopefully further progress will be made in 2013.

North Tipperary Macra na Feirme AGM The Annual General Meeting of North Tipperary Macra na Feirme was recently held at Bobby Reidy's, Newtown. The meeting was attended by the Munster Vice President of Macra, Tommy Moyles. The Chairman Tim Maher in his addresss stated the North Tipperary Macra had made a number of achievements over the last twelve months. North Tipp Macra won four All Ireland titles, Clodagh Club winning three and Devilsbit winning their very first ever. Our National Council Rep John Joyce was elected chair of the Ag Affairs Committee. An eight member delegation represented Macra na Feirme at Aras an Uachartain. A new Club was set up in Ballinahinch/Killoscully. Clubs were very busy raising money for Charity. Membership is at a ten year high. The Chairman stated that recruitment in the seven Clubs in North Tipperary was vital if the progress made was to be built on. He pledged to bring Macra back to any community in North Tipperary which showed an interest in setting up a new Club. The following were elected for the coming year. Congratulations to the Tipperary intermediate hurlers and management on their 1-18 to 0-17 victory over Clare in the Munster Intermediate hurling championship final played at Nenagh last weekend. The team was captained by Eddie Connolly of Loughmore Castleiney. It was Tipperary’s first title at this grade since 2002. Their next game will be the All Ireland final against Kilkenny or Galway on September 1.
Bord Gais Energy Munster Under 21 Hurling Final We wish the under 21 hurlers and management the very best of luck for the Munster final against Clare in Cusack Park, Ennis on Wednesday, August 8 at 7.15pm. The game will be refereed by John Sexton of Cork. Given the expected large attendance this match will be all ticket and seating will not be reserved. Please note that Juveniles will require a ticket. Supporters are strongly advised to purchase their tickets in advance as we cannot guarantee that there will be tickets for sale on the night due to the demand. Clubs should immediately contact their members and request orders which they will then forward to their divisional ticket co-ordinator in the same way as for all Munster fixtures. Tickets For All Ireland Hurling Semi-Finals Tipperary’s opponents in the All Ireland hurling semi-final at Croke Park on Sunday August 19 at 3.30pm will be Kilkenny following their 4-16 to 1-16 victory over a gallant Limerick team at Semple Stadium on Sunday. Borrisokane looked to the future last weekend, with the official opening of the new LocalSwitch Infopoint on Main Street. Working with national charity Localswitch Ireland, the Borrisokane Localswitch association will focus on creating jobs and enterprises for the town, locking money into the local economy. The Infopoint will act as a hub for this activity, providing information, support and training. The premises were officially opened by Mayor Micheal O’Meara with broadcaster Duncan Stewart, who spent the morning meeting locals and hearing about their plans for rejuvenating the town. He also took time to meet with the local Chernobyl children, to plant a tree in the Town Park and to visit the new Community Garden project. Speaking at the launch, Stewart emphasised the need for local communities to provide for their own needs and keep a hold on their local wealth. “This is priority” he said, “It’s not just that money stays in the community… it circulates and it multiplies, and that’s all about jobs.” The launch was very well attended, with representatives from LEADER, the County Enterprise Board and the local council, as well as many local

Clonoulty Rossmore Vintage Club Fun Run Clonoulty Rossmore Vintage Club had a very successful fun run on Sunday the 14 th July as even the weather held up. Every mode of transport was catered for, walking, running, cycling and driving. Great fun was had by young and old. The presence of our 3 local County GAA stars Timothy Hammersley, John O’Neill and John O’Keefe added a touch of glamour and prestige to the day. Everyone had a good appetite worked up for the BBQ afterwards, which proved a very popular social gathering for all members of the community. Plans are well under way for our Annual Rally which will be held on Sunday the 19th August in Clonoulty Village. The All Ireland Hurling
Semi Final,will be broadcast the match live in the field. The Tipp FM Roadcaster will be on site on the day until 2pm, get your requests ready! We have been the new owners of The Source Café for the past 18 months now and business is getting better and better. We are delighted to have a great deal of regular customers and have built up a very good relationship with them over the past 18 months. On our first day in The Source Café I never forget it!!! Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong!!! Our coffee machine was leaking all over the floor, as was the ice machine and many more problems surfaced in that very first week!! But, our customers stuck with us and appreciated the fact that everyone has teething problems when they first start a new business and they have loyaly supported us since the beginning! It has been very
hard but very rewarding, especially when people tell us that our coffee is excellent and our soup and many of our hot meals are also spot on! We are always adding different things to the menu on our specials board such as Falafel wraps (Lebanese), surf and turf baguettes (crispy bacon and prawns) and lately we have started doing pancakes with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast (usually on a Thursday)! We always take advice from our customers and appreciate feedback so that we can improve all the time. A few years ago, some of our staff was lucky enough to attend a course by Dr. Powers from the University of Southern California. The course content presented was on Functional Biomechanics of the Lower Quarter (i.e. leg) and some of this research was utilized to help his patient population which included some world class athletes. Since that time we have seen this work noted and referenced by multiple other lecturers both in the USA and Europe.

Hip weakness was shown to possibly lead to multiple injuries of the lower extremity including Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries (non-contact), Patello-Femoral Dysfunctions, Hamstring Injuries (chronic), Trochanteric Bursitis, Pes Anserina Bursitis, Snapping Hip Syndrome, and calf injuries, etc. One example given at the time was a world class sprinter presenting with chronic hamstring strains. After having his hamstrings treated time and again over the years, upon examination at USC, he actually
presented with weak and tight hip extensors, not weak hamstrings. Biomechanically a weak buttock (gluteals), would lead to the hamstring dominance with hip extension (gluteals). The hamstring alone was not designed for this job specifically and would become overloaded with running. In the end the hamstring would break down and tear. Treatment was changed to include a lot of gluteal strength activity, and the patient made good progress on this program. I know that was a lot to take in, but your local Chartered Physiotherapists understands and knows the biomechanics involved in movement and has a good understanding of the relationship between structures
involved in the movement. They are movement experts. If you are concerned that weakness and tightness of your hip complex is leading to lower quarter injuries and you would like further assessment please see your doctor or" chartered physiotherapist." Counselling Depression

People with bipolar disorder do not always experience depressive symptoms and may operate at the manic or hypomanic level. Researchers have divided bipolar depression into Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Bipolar I includes a history of depression and mania, and Bipolar II has a history of depression and hypomania. Bipolar I always exhibits clear patterns of severe mood disturbance, but this is not always clear in Bipolar II especially if the hypomania periods are brief. Áine Tubridy and Michael Corry in their excellent book Depression. An Emotion not a Disease outline the symptoms of bipolar at the manic stage. At the start of the manic stage sufferers have rapid speech, and are incapable of listening. They may be plagued by sleeplessness, have racing thoughts, high energy and be impatient at delays. They may become angry and irritable when challenged. Their pattern of living becomes disrupted and they may indulge in overspending, or begin to travel far afield in search of adventure. They may also become sexually inhibited, and, on the other hand show poor judgement by making sexual passes and telling the wrong jokes to the wrong people. This pattern then deepens and they enter a fantasy world, and have a different reality to other people. Unless others understand the nature of bipolar depression this can lead to anger, frustration and a fracturing of relationships. Sufferers become indignant at any opposition, and do not see what the consequences of their behaviour will be. They may become paranoid and see the world ranged against them as they untypically behave in a pompous and grandiose way. In this way of behaving they expend and enormous amount of energy and stress and ultimately may end up in hospital. The unfortunate sufferers of bipolar depression then experience postelation depression, in which their energy is depleted, yet their nervous system is still sensitised. At this stage medication is deemed necessary to slow the adrenaline and help them to sleep. This can result in such people entering a zombie like state, and it can be distressing for their families. When the medication is reduced they become aware of the chaos created by their manic behaviour, possible in the shape of career ruin, severed relationships, barring orders, protection orders and so on. So great can the extent of this debris be that it can bring on suicidal thoughts as an escape from the pain and the hurt. At this stage, as the depression deepens physicians may

So far I have been explaining what depression is, how awful that grey world is, and some of the complexities of this complaint. I would like to briefly write about how depression affected me in my life. I wrote this little poem to give some idea of how I experienced depression and a sense of powerlessness and hopelessness when my child was killed.
