Now that they are retired, my mother and father are discussing all aspects of their future. "What will you do if I die before you do?" Dad asked Mom. After some thought, she said that she'd probably look for a house sharing situation with three other single or widowed women who might be a little younger than herself, since she is so active for her age.

Then Mom asked Dad, "What will you do if I die first?" He replied, "Probably the same thing."

Foreign Work Placements for Templemore College Students In March 2016 thirty five students from Templemore College of Further Education completed work experience placements in Spain, France and Germany. Fifteen students spent three weeks in Sevilla, Spain working in areas of Tourism, European Studies, IT, Security Studies, Complementary Therapies, Childcare, and Creative Media. Whilst five students spent three weeks in Niort, France from the Horticulture and Sports and Recreation and a further fifteen students from Hairdressing, Beauty and Makeup Artistry courses spent three weeks in Leipzig, Germany. The Students from Templemore College of Further Education gained valuable experiences in terms of learning a new language and technical skills in their areas of expertise but also in terms of personal growth. All students demonstrated a significant increase in self-confidence, ma-

turity, and motivation upon their return home to Ireland. In addition, the Erasmus+ mobility experience will enhance the student's CV and help the student secure future employment, at home or abroad. Each student receives funding from the Erasmus+ programme for travel, accommodation, and living expenses. Students gain an opportunity to experience life in another country, by attending language classes, working with a local company, and participating in organised cultural activities. This was an extremely successful initiative this year and all students found it to be a worthwhile and positive experience.

Thurles Squash Club had 6 junior members on Munster duty recently at the Junior Interprovincials in Galway. Philip O Connell was on the boys u13 team which finished runners up with wins over Ulster and Connacht. The girls u13s were also runners up and we had 3 girls with Cate Maher, Sarah O Connell and Fiona Guidera. Claire Dempsey was the Thurles representative on the girls u17 and they also collected runners up trophies. Eoghan Cleary was on the u15 boys team and despite his best efforts the team was unsuccessful but gave a very good account of themselves.

The 1890 130 022 phone line puts farmers who are feeling suicidal, or their families, in direct contact with a Pieta House trained therapist who can listen and will make an appointment in one of their nine centres, if needed. The therapist will provide a compassionate, solution focussed, one-to-one counselling service completely free of charge. The ‘Mind Our Farm Families’ phone line provides support not just to the person who is feeling suicidal but to concerned family members or friends. IFA Farm Family Chairperson Maura Canning said, “We want to make sure that farmers and their families have an outlet to talk - for a lot people just talking, sharing their pain is almost like a weight being lifted from their shoulders. We know that rural populations are more at risk of suicide than urban communities and the rate tends to escalate with levels of rural remoteness. An estimated 13% of those who die from suicide are from an agricultural background. Internationally, men have been shown to be three times more likely to commit suicide than women – in Ireland, that figure rises to four-times more likely.

“About 70% of the people who come to Pieta House have no history of mental illness; they are simply reacting to life events. For farm families, economic difficulties, trying to cope with increased regulation, increased price volatility and falling incomes, are very challenging. These issues have been shown to be particularly challenging for male farmers who identify their masculinity with providing for their families.” Maura Canning encouraged anybody with a concern about a family member or friend to reach out. She said, “The most common signs that someone may be in distress are that they are withdrawing from social situations, not answering their phone or accepting visitors, noticeable deterioration in the condition of the farm or the care of animals, possibly increased use of alcohol or drugs as well as behavioural changes such as emotional outbursts, changes in sleep or loss of appetite. It is often the use of language that can be the most telling sign, phrases such as ‘my family would be better off without me’ or ‘I see no light at the end of the tunnel’”. The Mind Our Farm Families phone line 1890 130 022 is accessible Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. Outside of these hours The Samaritans on 116 123 and Console on 1800 247 247 provide 24 hour support. Console also provides a support service for families bereaved by suicide.

Feast for the senses as Tipperary Food Producers host Great Taste Awards Judging The spirit of meitheal was alive and well in Tipperary this week as the Tipperary Food Producers Network welcomed the Guild of Fine Food and a host of Irish and international judges for the Great Taste Awards with a series of special events. Following Clonmel’s own James Whelan Butchers Supreme Champion win last year at the Great Taste Awards, the Guild of Fine Food took their show on the road and for the first time ever held the Irish judging process in County Tipperary.

and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’, being an acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink. The business of tasting is a thorough and rigorous one with over 1300 products entered into Great Taste 2016 from Ireland including cider, beer, tea, preserves, meats and cheeses and over 850 products were judged in Tipperary this week. The Great Taste Awards have seen a large increase in Irish companies entering the awards since last year alone, a jump from 157 in 2015 to 215 in 2016.

On Wednesday evening, following the second day of tasting, guests enjoyed a tour of the spectacular Rock Of Cashel and some traditional Irish dancing by local children. A five-minute stroll downhill and guests arrived at Chez Hans for a Long Table Dinner. Set in a converted Victorian Gothic church, Chez Hans was the perfect setting in which to showcase the excellent standard and quality of Tipperary produce, with a stunning and sophisticated sixcourse tasting menu.

Aside from the evening entertainment and feasting, there was serious business to attend to during the day. The annual Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, are considered the ‘Oscars’ of the food world

Welcoming a whole host of food experts such as Charles Campion, BBC Radio 2’s Nigel Barden and many of the best chefs, buyers, restaurateurs and writers in the business, the Great Taste roadshow were given a true taste of Tipperary and a genuine sense of Ireland’s impressive and diverse collection of food and drink producers.

Starting on Tuesday after the day’s tasting with an evening at the famous Coolmore Stud, judges and guests were taken on a behind the scenes tour of the stud generally acknowledged to be the world’s biggest and best thoroughbred racehorse breeding operation. During their tour they were treated to a special audience with Galileo, the crown jewel of Coolmore, followed by a relaxed BBQ supper featuring local products such as the famous James Whelan Butchers burgers and The Butcher’s Daughter sausages, freshly made corn tortillas from Blanco Niño, breads and from Mag’s Home Baking and meringues from The Tipperary Kitchen, all accompanied by delicious wines selected by Gary Gubbins of Clonmel’s own Red Nose Wine. After supper, guests were brought to McCarthy’s of Fethard for some craic agus ceol in the form of the rousing Pheasant Pluckers who soon had the whole crowd singing along.

The menu included pulled pork ravioli using magnificent Crowes Farm pork, with swede puree, almonds and lovage butter, followed by deep fried brie and beetroot salad with black pudding and watercress courtesy of Cooleeney Farm, O’Donnell’s and Inch House. One of the key dishes was a fillet of Irish Piedmontese beef, with beef dripping fondant potato, made using last year’s Great Taste Award Supreme Champion winner, James Whelan Butchers Beef Dripping. There was also Crozier Blue, pearl barley, cider and celeriac with onion marmalade and rapeseed oil from Cashel Farmhouse Cheesemakers, Longways Cider, Crossogue Preserves and Emerald Oils, and guests enjoyed some exceptional French wines from the Languedoc, again carefully chosen and provided by expert Gary Gubbins of Clonmel’s own Red Nose Wine. Finally guests were treated to something sweet from The Apple Farm, Boulabán Farm and Lough Derg Chocolates and something soulful from the wonderful Kathy Nugent. Her dazzling performance of Broadway classics roused the crowd to song, and she even made a few misty-eyed with

her rendition of As She Moved Through The Fair. On the final evening, following three and a half very successful days of tasting new flavours, forming new friendships and falling in love with Tipperary, guests and judges could choose from four separate intimate dining experiences. Each as personal and authentic as the other, one dinner was served in Crossogue House and Farney Castle, home to the famous Crossogue Preserves, a second dinner in Inch House, home of the renowned black pudding, hosted by owners John and Nora Egan, a third in Hickey’s Bakery and Café hosted by fourth generation baker, Nuala Hickey, and the fourth in elegant Greenane House.

Guests and judges spent a warm and welcoming evening with their respective hosts before retiring for their final night’s sleep to Hotel Minella, who looked after all the judges throughout their entire stay with charm and professionalism, and in cosy comfort.

Last year’s overall Great Taste Awards champion, the Harrods Trophy Supreme Champion 2015, winner of a coveted Golden Fork and three gold stars, was James Whelan Butchers’ magnificent Beef Dripping. Pat Whelan of James Whelan Butchers is the current Chairperson of Tipperary Food Producers, so his passion for the area and his enthusiasm for having the opportunity to introduce these important international opinion-makers to the best of his home county were a major factor in this year’s judging roadshow decision. “The judges, from all corners of the food world, have had busy days of judging in Tipperary, but have also had three evenings packed full of flavour, colour, welcome and fun in the capable hands of Tipperary Food Producers,” says Pat Whelan, Chairperson of Tipperary Food Producers. “This was a wonderful project to be involved with, and it has been made possible by the generous support of all the local and national agencies whose collaboration is immensely appreciated by all at Tipperary Food Producers. Our sincere thanks go to Tipperary County Council, Bord Bia, Local Enterprise Office Tipperary, Tipperary Tourism Company, Department of Agriculture Food & the Marine, North Tipperary Leader Partnership, and South Tipperary Development Company.”

Seeking ‘The Best Sports Club in Ireland’ The Irish Times is on the hunt for the Best Sports Club in Ireland: clubs with great spirit, great communities and great achievements. This sporting competition is all about the taking part, not the winning. The club can be large or small, urban or rural, cup winner or community club. The winning sports club, to be announced in June, will receive a prize of €5,000, with a further €1,000 for another deserving entrant. The prize is provided by the National Dairy Council (NDC), the competition’s sponsor. The winner will be decided by a panel of judges chosen by The Irish Times. Judges will make their decision based on criteria including community involvement, club spirit and, of course, sporting achievement. Conor Goodman, Irish Times Features Editor and chair of the judging panel, says: “This is a genuine celebration of participation rather than of sporting prowess, an effort to recognise the great local organisations around Ireland, minorityinterest groups, tight teams, bands of driven individuals, volunteers, fans, drivers, substitutes, supporters, sandwich makers, goal scorers, committee members, fundraisers, visionaries, chairpersons, coaches, kit launderers, parents and local heroes.” Rob and David Kearney launched The Best Sports Club in Ireland with a photo shoot on Tuesday, 12th April. NDC chief executive Zoë Kavanagh says that The Best

Sports Club in Ireland sponsorship celebrates the positive role that dairy can play in sports nutrition, at whatever level you play or enjoy sports. “In the area of sports nutrition, milk is recognized as a convenient, affordable and accessible option postsport/exercise. Following a healthy, balanced diet is essential for any athlete regardless of sport or competitive level, and the timing and type of foods chosen can impact performance” says Kavanagh. Kavanagh explains that Rob and Dave Kearney, who grew up on a farm in Co Louth, have been ambassadors for the National Dairy Council since the start of 2014. “They have been superb role models, resonating with people of all ages and helping us to promote the benefits of dairy as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle,” says Kavanagh. This is the fifth such competition run by The Irish Times. In 2012 we named Westport, Co Mayo, as the Best Place to Live in Ireland; in 2013 Loop Head, Co Clare, won the title of Best Place to Holiday in Ireland; and in 2014, with an emphasis on outdoor activity, we chose Erris, Co Mayo, as the Best Place to Go Wild in Ireland. Last year Killarney National Park, in Co Kerry, was named the Best Day Out in Ireland. In all these contests the information that you have supplied has been central. So get writing. Nominate your club, and find full terms and conditions at www.irishtimes.com/bestsportscl ub.

Half time score Tipperary 1-07 Galway 1-02 Full time score Tipperary 4-09 Galway 2-06 Photo M Ryan Saturday 30th April 2016 will go down in the history books of Tipperary Camogie as the day this bunch of young ladies came to St. Brendan’s Park, Birr, Co.Offaly and delivered a devastating performance that Galway just had no answer for and walked away All-Ireland champions. Tipp looked more focused with the job in hand second time round and from the throw in were causing the Galway defence all sorts of problems. It was Galway that got the first score of the game from a free in the 7th minute and it wasn’t until the 13th minute that Tipp got their first score from Sinead Buckley. Two minutes later Tipp struck again with a good point from player of the match Orla O'Dwyer. Galway replied with a goal and moments later Caoimhe Pardue was introduced and straight away was making her presence felt. Points from Grace O'Brien, Keely Lenihan and Sinead Buckley helped settle things down for Tipp and in the 26th minute super sub Caoimhe Pardue got Tipp's first goal. Points from Orla O'Dwyer &

Grace O'Brien before the break put Tipp into a commanding position with the half time score reading 107/1-02 in favour of Tipperary. Five minute's into the 2nd half Galway got their second goal and followed that up with a point. Then Caoimhe Pardue got in for our second goal and six minutes later Orla O'Dwyer got our third goal, two minutes later added another point. Sinead Meagher who battled hard all day also added 1-01 to close out the game for Tipperary. Congratulations to management and all concerned and especially to the girls themselves, being crowned AllIreland champions is no more than they deserve for their hard work, commitment and loyalty to the jersey and no doubt we will see more days like this in the future with this talented bunch of young ladies.

ENTERTAINMENT & EVENTS

Communities in Tipperary join forces to celebrate Bealtaine 2016 Age & Opportunity is delighted to announce an exciting line-up of County Tipperary-based events which will take place during the month of May as part of Bealtaine 2016, Ireland's annual festival of creativity as we age. Now in its 21st year, Bealtaine continues to be embraced by the Tipperary community with many arts and cultural events organised by local libraries, arts centres, care settings, galleries, active retirement groups and community groups across the county. Last year, over 125,000 people across Ireland participated in Bealtaine, making it one of the most important cultural events in the national arts calendar. This year, the festival commemorates 100 years since the birth of modern Ireland by exploring the theme of Ireland’s Iconic First Citizens. With over 600 events taking place across the country including a mix of musical, visual arts, literature and theatre, there is definitely something for everyone in Bealtaine 2016. Highlights from Bealtaine 2016 in Tipperary include: On the 14th May, at Damer House in Roscrea; artist Andrew Pike will open a retrospective exhibition of paintings, drawing and an animated Film Going to War over a Banana Truck. Andrew

Pike is one of the founding artists of Kilkenny Collective for Art Talent (KCAT) and lives in Camphill Community in Callan. ‘I look at the world in a different way’ says Andrew ‘I’ve always been a non-conformer’. Andrew, originally from Birr County Offaly, emigrated with his parents to New Zealand in 1949. After 22 years Andrew and his parents returned to live in Ireland 1971. In 1999 KCAT was founded. KCAT aims to create a new situation, an environment in which artists and students from different backgrounds and abilities can work and create together and in which life-long learning is an opportunity for everyone. This is just one of over 90 events that will be held during Bealtaine around the county. Another firm highlight will be the unveiling of two portraits of Tipperary-based writers Marjorie Quarton and Michael Coady, both giants of literature and champions of the arts and creativity in Tipperary. The launch of the portraits which were commissioned by the Tipperary Arts Office will be at The Source Arts Centre & Library in Thurles on Thursday 28th April at 3pm and Marjorie and Michael read from their works and to celebrate Bealtaine’s 21st Birthday.

hour-long performance, unearthing the dramatic role played by Cumann na mBan during the Easter Rising. The performance brings to life the characters of 1916 in a coherent, humanizing and entertaining way. Picture if you will, a woman with a Red Cross flag in one hand and a White flag in the other, emerging from the door of a building in Moore Street. Meet Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell, midwife at Holles Street Maternity Hospital. She is taking the offer of surrender to the British barricade on Moore Street... This is the starting framework story for the show. Other characters will emerge like Countess Markievicz, Louise Gavan-Duffy and Margaret Skinnider. Questions will be posed: How was the Cumann formed? What motivated these extraordinary women to join? What happened to them after The Rising? All the time, the narrative of the story will move back in time, explaining, documenting and highlighting the connection between history, drama and even celebration. Curtain up 2.30pm. FREE admission. To reserve seats contact the Theatre Box Office on 062 808

In addition, Aras Mhuire Day Care Centre will present a live performance by renowned singer Nora Butler on the 24th May at Aras Mhuire Day Care Centre. For more information about Tipperary’s Bealtaine programme please visit: tipperarycoco.ie or visit: http://bealtaine.com/bealtaine 2016/programme/listing/Tipperary Speaking today, Karen Smyth, CEO of Age & Opportunity said, "Yet again we are thrilled by the passion and commitment that the Tipperary community brings to Bealtaine this year. With more events taking place across the country than ever before, we are delighted that the festival continues to grow from strength to strength both in Tipperary and nationwide. It is with the support of our local partners that Bealtaine 2016 can successfully deliver its mission which is to support our older artists and to provide more opportunities for people of all ages to come together to celebrate the arts and become creative.” For more information please go to www.bealtaine.com

A Walk in the Woods A Walk in the Woods is a new film based on Bill Bryson’s travel book about attempting to hike the Appalachian Trail with an old friend, 2,200 miles of America's most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The author Bill Bryson is played by Robert Redford. The peace and tranquillity Bryson hopes to find is anything but, once he agrees to be accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his long lost and former friend Katz (Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer. This pair of hiking amateurs have a completely different definition of the word "adventure". Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins. Counselling Anxiety

(continued from previous issue)

Social Anxiety - how to ease it It is sad, considering how devastating and crippling it is, that so few people seek help for social anxiety. Many never seek help, but remain trapped in a negative and distressing world. Because so many of them have it since childhood, they see it as normal, even when it develops into a debilitating complaint as they move through adulthood. It has been noted that at least half of social phobics are happy and contented as children, but as they enter adolescence, they become more self-conscious, and get social anxiety. I am not sure I subscribe to that theory, but like all anxiety, it is possible, if not to fully cure it, to greatly ease it. For example, as I have already shown, the wiring of the brain can be changed by substituting the positive for the negative over a long period. Similarly, if social anxiety is a genetic or learned behaviour it can be unlearned. The sufferer may avail of drugs or counselling to get relief. I think counselling is the better option. I believe that a combination of different types of counselling is the preferred way to go about dissolving this painful condition. The humanistic type helps to build up self-confidence, and the cognitive behavioural helps the victim to desensitise and face the anxiety. Cognitive behavioural therapy can also be used to explain the nature of anxiety, and this helps to take some of the fear out of the equation. Sufferers are shown the link between illogical thinking and resulting behaviour. The sufferer is given help to unlearn the negative behaviour and thinking, and to challenge irrational thoughts. Rather than using avoidance the sufferer is taught to use a gradual process to desensitise himself to social occasions. The important word here is gradual. Rather than face the anxiety- provoking

situation the sufferer slowly builds up confidence by taking small steps using exposure therapy. For example if you have a fear of public speaking, you could begin by looking at video of people giving public speeches (at election times!!). Imagine that you are that person. Then prepare a speech and deliver it when you are alone in your room. You might then talk to a friend or a family member about the themes in the speech. After that, you might give the speech to that friend or family member. Then you could give the speech to a small number of friends. In that way, you become familiar and desensitised to making a speech. This takes time, effort and patience. For children who have developed what is called selective mutism (unable to speak when asked a question in school, but who have no problem when speaking at home) the counsellor gradually helps the child feel comfortable when speaking.
