Trevor’s 24 Hour Challenge On Saturday next the 18th of June, Borrisoleigh man Trevor Groome will attempt a sporting challenge that could only be tried by a rare breed of competitor. At 3pm on Saturday as part of a fundraiser for our Track-Attack Club, he will rotate the pedals of his bike at Mizen Head at the foot of Co. Cork and in less than 24 hours later, he will be hoping to finish his challenge at Malin Head at the most northerly part of Co. Donegal. Trevor will be joined on the trek by 2 of his club mates of the Upperchurch/Drombane Cycling Club namely Pat Healy and Davy Cullen and also by Barry Meehan of Sean Kelly Cycling.com. They were also meant to be joined by another Borrisoleigh man in Liam Murray but unfortunately an injury sustained in recent weeks have scuppered his chances of making the start line. The quartet will be joined on their daunting task by a back-up van which will be driven for the first
half of the journey by All-Star hurler Shane McGrath while Trevor’s brother, Jamie will take the wheel for the second leg of the trek. If all goes to plan, Trevor and his comrades will be hitting the outskirts of Nenagh town between 11pm and 11:30pm on Saturday night. They will be coming in by Donal Ryan’s Garage and then proceed up the town by-pass and head out the Borrisokane road. We will keep the progress of the group updated on the Borrisoleigh TrackAttack Facebook page throughout the journey. Trevor has kindly offered to do the challenge to help Track-Attack’s efforts in raising the funds to erect lighting on the newest development of the 1.3km track surrounding the sports field in Borrisoleigh. 9 Fuel Saving Tips that every Motorist should know this Summer To help battle against higher fuel prices, the AA offers 9 fuel saving tips that every motorist should know this summer: Go for value: buy fuel in units of litres, not Euros as better value appears more obvious. Shop around: don’t always use the same garage out of habit. Easy does it: drive smoothly, accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking Decelerate smoothly: when you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear Rolling: if you can keep the car moving all the time, so much the better; stopping then starting again uses more fuel than rolling Change up earlier: don't labour the engine but try changing up at an engine speed of around 2,000 rpm in a diesel car or around 2,500 rpm in a petrol car. This can make such
a difference that all cars in the future are likely to be fitted with a 'Gear Shift indicator' light to show the most efficient gear change points. Cut down on the air-con: air-conditioning increases fuel consumption at low speeds, but at higher speeds the effects are less noticeable. So if it's a hot day open the windows around town and save the air conditioning for high speed driving. Don't leave air-con on all the time but aim to run it at least once a week throughout the year to maintain the system in good condition. Turn it off: electrical loads increase fuel consumption, so turn off your heated rear windscreen, demister blowers and headlights, when you don't need them. Stick to speed limits: the faster you go the greater the fuel consumption and pollution. Driving at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more than at 50mph. Cruising at 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70mph.

Call out to get 500 companies across Ireland Growing Food at Work GIY and Cully & Sully have put the call out to businesses across Ireland and aim to get 500 companies signed up to their ‘al desko’ growing food at work initiative. CEO of Insomnia Bobby Kerr and Dragon Alison Cowzer have come on board to help launch the food growing challenge, called “Give Peas a Chance’. The initiative aims to help people understand where their food comes from and green Ireland’s workplaces, the ‘Give Peas A Chance’ campaign will see up to 500 teams in companies all over Ireland growing some peas on their desk at work over the summer months. Once they sign up to the challenge, the teams will receive a free Grow pack of sowing pots, seeds and soil plus expert growing tips and training advice from GIY. Companies then kick off their ‘al desko’ growing, competing against each other by logging their growing adventures on a dedicated online ‘growing wall’ and sharing their exploits on social media. The most engaged and green-fingered team win vouchers to visit Ballymaloe House & Cookery School worth €1,500, and best of all get to donate a community garden worth €3,000 to a local cause of their choice, from a hospice or school to a care home or Men’s Shed. Last year’s challenge was won by Optimal Chiropractic in Cork who donated their community garden to the Cork Association for Autism in Mogeely. A spring gathering of ‘meitheal’ earlier this year installed and built the garden, which will be of huge therapeutic benefit to the service users.

People are often daunted by the idea of growing their own food, so this challenge shows them how simple it is, and you get to harvest some lovely pea shoots to eat right off your little mini farm on your desk. ENTERTAINMENT & EVENTS Borrisoleigh Tipp’s Got Talent 2016 Festival 2016 We are delighted to report Tipperary Excel will host Tipp’s Got Talent 2016 in association with Tipperary Musical Society. This talent competition promises to be one of the most exciting summer community events for Tipperary Town and surrounding areas. Tipp’s Got Talent is open to all Performing Acts (solo, duet, larger groups) including; singers, musicians, bands, dancers, performing groups, comedians and magicians across the full entertainment spectrum. Similar to 2014 and 2015 Tipperary Mid West Radio has come on board as Media Partner, while the Pride of Tipperary Festival will be officially associated with the event. There is a lower age limit of 10yrs and all Acts are welcome. The competition will have a cash prize-fund of €500 for the over-all winner. This year’s Borrisoleigh Festival takes place on Sunday 17th July. There is a jam packed day in store for everyone. The day kicks off with Bush n Briar walk followed by music on the square after mass. At 12.30 there is a 1916 themed parade so get yer gear out for this! After the opening ceremony at 1pm there is line dancing with Suzanne at 1.30 followed by Social Dancing with Phil Maher at 3pm. The Boom Boozlers group will entertain children from 2pm to 4pm in the Community Centre. The Taekwando group will put on an exhibition at 5pm. Sleaze n Cheese will play some 80s tunes from 5.30pm -7.30pm. After that, the hugely popular Churn Rolling will take over on Pallas St.. The day will be concluded with music from Ebony from 9pm.

Child Separation Anxiety Disorder. Aspects of life that aggravate SAD Most children probably feel anxious when experiencing separating from their primary caregiver, or from the familiar place that is called home. Young children, for example, feel very anxious when staying over at a relative’s house, even their grandparents’ house, for the first time. Separation anxiety is a normal state of human development, but as a pathological (extreme) complaint, it is a feeling of a repeated excessive level of anxiety when being separated from a person or a place. It is pathological if it continues and interferes with how a child copes with the everyday challenges of life. It is most relevant to children and is regarded as a juvenile complaint. Separation anxiety has been well researched, and John Bowlby was the first to explore it in some detail. For those of you who are interested you might like to read his volumes on it. Separation Anxiety Disorder can develop between 8 months and 1 year old as children become more aware that they are separate distinct beings. For some children separation anxiety does not develop until they are between 18 months and 2½ years. You may recall my sections of attachment to the primary caregiver in my articles on abuse. You may remember that I wrote about insecure attachment (dismissive attachment and fearful attachment). In a way, this is somewhat similar and is more fully explored in my book on abuse. The child feels distressed when separated from the primary caregiver, usually the mother. This, for example may be clearly seen in some children when they first go to school. They cling to their mother and cry with distress when she leaves. Some writers claim that this condition is most evident in children from close-knit families. I do not agree with this, depending of course on what they mean by close-knit. If a child has been raised in a warm, loving atmosphere where his or her emotional needs are met, it is most unlikely that they will experience Separation Anxiety Disorder. There are some situations that can aggravate Separation Anxiety Disorder. For example, frequent changing of houses or schools can trigger this

anxiety in children who may be prone to it. Changing a baby sitter can also cause distress, because familiarity is very comforting for a child. Bereavement can also be very upsetting for a young child, and this includes the loss of a pet. Sometimes as parents we can be overprotective, and this may foster separation anxiety. Parents who are overprotective may themselves find the world an unsafe place, and their children absorb these parents’ fears. Children who suffer from this are inclined to withdraw socially, they are listless, sad and find it difficult to concentrate on anything. They are more inclined to be negative than positive, have a fear of abandonment, find the world a scary place, fear death (the ultimate and inevitable separation), have images of disaster, fearsome creatures, and all kinds of danger that threaten the family or themselves. They may also be angry and have suicidal feelings. These unfortunate children may be clingy, demanding, looking for attention, forlorn, lonely and angry. Sometimes this painful mix may exhibit itself in somatic symptoms. Unfortunately, they are also vulnerable to becoming depressed on a long-term basis. (Continued in next issue)
