Proceedings opened with event organiser Paul Fogarty, welcoming all to present and outlining the background to the event. Michael Ryan then presented the clubs capital plans going forward with an exciting 3D model of the plans for development at Kiladangan’s GAA grounds. Paul Fogarty then explained the cycle routes and event details, he thanked Nenagh Cycling Club and North Tipperary Wheelers for their advice and support for the project. He went on to outline the funding strands for the event, ‘the key to the success of this event is the 30 cycling teams led by people from the parish.
The commitment of the Team Leaders to the project is what ensures the success of this event. It is amazing and refreshing to witness first hand the generosity and willingness of people to participate in the development of their locality’ Paul commented . There has been a long tradition in Kiladangan GAA club when embarking on fundraising projects to look to other voluntary organisations who are working for the betterment of families and communities. With this project Kiladangan have partnered with Pieta House, who provide services to people who are challenged by every day life. John Tougher from Pieta House addressed the launch and thanked Kiladangan for their support to Pieta House. In wishing the project well he outlined the type of challenges Pieta House face in providing their services. Local councillor and Dail candidate Joe Hannigan was on hand to carry out the official launch. Kiladangan Cycling Challenge will take place on Sunday 10th of April 2016. . Borrisoleigh Team Through to National Finals of the European CanSat Competition! CanSat is an international competition thought up by the European Space Agency to promote science education among second level students. A CanSat is basically when we design, build and code a satellite that fits inside the size of a soft drinks can! When the satellite is launched, it needs to take readings from our sensors and we have the results live streamed to our website. The Irish ESERO, headed by Stephanie O'Neill, are responsible for the Irish leg of the competition. LIT's Marie Walsh acts as a regional host and sponsor of the competition. We also had a mentor from LIT, Ian who was on hand to answer any of our questions. We also got to meet a lovely judge from Vistakon in Nenagh called Hugh who made the day enjoyable also. On Friday, 4th of March 2016, our CanSat team - Copernicus IV, won the regional's! We are now through to the nationals in Birr Castle in April. After all the hard work and late nights, we were excited for launch day in LIT. We had a very early start after a late night adding the final touches to our project! The most anxious part was waiting to see if our satellite would transmit results once it was taking off in the quad-copter. That was probably the most exciting part of the day. After that, we were confident we could do well once we got the correct data

from our CanSat. We had practiced our presentation so we could deliver it and present ourselves well. We were all in shock when they called out our name as the winners. Now it is time to go back to the drawing board again to improve our design! - Aaron Reid As part of the team I feel accomplished and delighted that our team gets to compete again in Birr Observatory for the nationals. Friday was an excellent day in my opinion. We went in as one of the smallest teams. We had developed our satellite with the lowest budget approx 40euro and our CanSat was the lightest at the competition. We competed well and I believe our win is much deserved. Cashel in County Tipperary is bidding to become Ireland’s first ‘zero waste’ community following in the footsteps of over 200 towns and cities worldwide, including San Francisco and Ljubljana, which have embraced the principle. VOICE, an environmental charity specialising in waste and the circular economy, has joined forces with the Southern Regional Waste Management Office (SRWMO) to commence a ‘towards zero waste’ pilot programme in Cashel. The global movement is based on the principle of the circular economy whereby very little goes to waste through waste prevention, reuse and repair, recycling and composting. “Our Earth has limited natural resources such as metals and minerals but unlimited potential in the circular economy,” said Mindy O’Brien, Coordinator from VOICE, whose counts Darina Allen, Pauline Bewick, Don Conroy, Dick Warner and Christy Moore among its patrons.

To embrace this new paradigm, 200 localities of all different sizes around the world have become ‘zero waste’ communities. While diverse in nature, the one thing they all have in common is that they have embraced ‘zero waste’ and have reduced their waste significantly while encouraging the development of new businesses and industries. For example, take-away food businesses in San Francisco now all serve their dishes in compostable containers, which has fostered a new compostable container manufacturing sector,” said Ms. McDonagh. This ‘zero waste’ initiative, which has received funding from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government and the SRWMO, will be an 18-month pilot.

Tipperary Student Enterprise Awards Colaiste Phobal Roscrea and Our Lady's Secondary School Templemore win the top prizes at the Tipperary Student Enterprise Awards. Following the County Final of the Student Enterprise Awards which took place at LIT Thurles on Friday last, two Tipperary Schools will progress to represent their County in three categories at the National Finals taking place in Croke Park on April 20 next. Over 240 students from across the County competed in the competition which began in second level schools last September and initially involved almost 1800 students. Co-ordinated by the Local Enterprise Office Tipperary, the competition is the most successful programme of its kind in the country with up to 17,000 participants. Colaiste Phobal Roscrea swept the boards winning both the Senior and Intermediate Awards with Our Lady's Secondary School in Templemore winning the Junior Award. Jack Kirwan with his innovative water sterilising unit won the Senior Award with Tadgh Nash and his business called 550 Paracord Bracelets scooping the Intermediate award. The Junior category winner was Aisling Meehan with her business Clawbag, a gear bag with a hook for holding hurleys. This year’s awards were presented by the Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council, Seamus Hanafin who delivered the welcome address. Addressing the packed auditorium, Cathaoirleach Seamus Hanafin said that “in Tipperary we have great Entrepreneurs, we just don’t have enough of them. That is why Tipperary County Council through the Local Enterprise Office is seeking to support more young people to selec entrepreneurship as a career choice. The Student Enterprise Awards programme plays an important part in this. Nationally more than 17,000 students from 370 secondary schools research and run their own businesses and here in Tipperary today we have 93 of the

The competition carried a prize fund of €3,000 at local level in addition to specially commissioned awards. Tipperary Person of the Year for 2015 Congratulations to Noel McGrath of Tipperary hurling fame who has been selected as the Tipperary Person of the Year for 2015 by the Tipperary Association Dublin. In spring 2015, the Tipperary and national hurling world was shocked to hear the news that Noel McGrath had been diagnosed with cancer. Speaking at the announcement of the award, Liam Myles, President of the Tipperary Association Dublin, stated that the dignified way in which he handled his adversity, the courageous way he publicly acknowledged his illness and more so the way he highlighted testicular cancer and the need for males – young and old – to be monitored and checked sets him apart as a Tipperary person in 2015. Initially, and understandably, he asked for privacy for himself and his family and the time and space to be allowed
sort out his trauma. The respect in which he is held was reflected in how well that request was adhered to. Later on and as he was undergoing treatment he showed great character in thinking of others worse afflicted. He supported the Movember Foundation and became an ambassador for the foundation and, through the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) gave of his time and energy to support the Childhood Cancer Foundation. In these roles and in a number of public appearances he has made a huge contribution to help break the “taboo” that has traditionally existed around male cancer and testicular cancer in particular. Doctor John Ryan, a native of Ardfinnan, is to be awarded the Hall of Fame
for 2015 by the Association in recognition of his lifetime contribution to and achievements in the field of soil science, education and humanity throughout the world. For a lifetime of working to improve the lives of people living in some of the most arid regions of the world and for his contribution to agriculture among the poorest farming communities John Ryan is truly a representative of Tipperary who deserves to be inducted into the Association’s Hall of Fame. Both awards will be presented at the Annual Awards Function on Saturday the 5th of March next in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Dublin. This is a solo album in the true sense in that as well as writing all except one of the songs, amazingly Paula has single-handedly crafted all the wonderful arrangements and performs them on a fascinating variety of instruments including Marimba, Bazouki, Guitar, Bodhran, Saxophone, Tin Whistle, Djembe and Darabuka to accompany her lead vocals augmented by glorious harmonies.
Paula draw her inspiration for her songs from a wide variety of sources ranging from the joyful curiosity of the children of Tanzania with whom Paula made music in 2010 captured in the opening track - "A Thousand Smiling Faces", to the bravery of modern day heroes and heroines reflected in the title track of the album - "Let Me Fly" - a tribute to aviator Amy Johnson. Paula strives not to be confined by the boundaries of any partiular musical style or genre and seeks to continually expand her musical horizons. She also accepts no limits in terms of topics which can and indeed should be tackled by the songwriter, from the sublime to the ridiculous, it's all just waiting to be put in a song! What is remarkable about this album is that one can find the most gently sweet love song such as "The Funny One" alongside the stark lament-like "Don't Cry", the most entralling story song such as "Honest John" and the most fun loving party song such as "Havin' The Craic!" all equally well written, sensitively performed and beatifully arranged. Just as with many of the greatest songwriters (Springsteen, Mitchell, Dylan, Cohen, Morrison, etc...), Paula has the ability to capture real life moments and experiences with imaginative melody and ingenious lyrics, and the character to emhathise and to impart her viewpoint in song in a way which strikes a chord with the listener and 'makes something magical happen' for audience and singer alike. The playwright, Gerry Britt, is a native of New York who traced his roots back to Upperchurch and Drombane. He is now a frequent visitor to Ireland. His book ‘Goodwill on Credit, Travels in Ireland‘ contains a number of humorous and insightful stories into his travels around Ireland. If the play is anyway as entertaining as his book, it is sure to be tremendous performance and a great night out.

Social Anxiety Roots of. Performance anxiety. The golden rules of David Leisner. You may ask what fosters and feeds social anxiety. It can have several roots. Perhaps negative experiences as a child sow the baneful seed. There is some evidence of genetic factors being involved. There is a strong possibility that at least one child of a parent who perpetually worries will also learn how to be a worrier and be angst-ridden. We can never exclude brain malfunction for any type of psychological complaint, and social phobia is no exception. It is now thought that parts of the brain involved in emotions are over active. As one psychologist put it, there are no brakes put on it, so sufferers of social anxiety are over alert in social situations. Their brains are hardwired and turned on all the time. Performance anxiety is part of social anxiety. Those with this type of anxiety avoid situations where they have to accomplish something in the presence of others, such as singing, acting, doing examinations, doing a driving test, or taking an interview, to name but a few. The most common type of performance anxiety is fear of public speaking. David Leisner, one of the world’s leading classical guitarists, rightly puts performance anxiety in the context of negative thinking. He gave much thought to the feelings and thoughts that were distracting him during a performance. He then considered the best way to counteract them and came up with six ‘golden’ rules for conquering performance anxiety. These work for him and have decreased the amount of performance anxiety he now gets. The first rule is to remind yourself that you have practised to the best of your ability. You have done your best at this time. Now you must trust your ‘automatic pilot’ to take over during the performance/interview/driving test/etc. When I was a school Principal, I had to give many speeches, and I always spent a long time rehearsing them. I loved rehearsing them in the car as I drove along. I liked how they would change with each practise. I never knew how they would emerge when the time came to deliver them, but always the automatic pilot took over. The more this happened the calmer I became. I never had the nervous feeling that I would be stuck or tongue tied, so I never experience more than the normal anxiety we all feel when we have to perform in front of an audience. Above all, do not judge your performance while doing it. This is a huge distraction and it takes you into the past. Be in the moment.

Concentrate upon your speech/interview/etc. You can review it later. In that context, do not focus on the audience. Checking audience reaction is also a distraction, bringing on negative thoughts, and is fruitless and self-destructive. Sometimes we can focus on a particular member of the audience and imagine what they are thinking. We assume that they are criticising our speech, our acting, or our performance in whatever field. The fact is we do not know what other people are thinking, and as I already indicated, often project our own negative thoughts onto them, imagining that our negative thoughts are also theirs. This is fantasy, and is never accurate. You cannot really perform and be focussed on what the audience is doing. If we see someone who looks bored, or someone who is yawning, we cannot assume that they are bored with our performance. They may simply be tired, or preoccupied with other matters. We do not know. Focus on the performance. As David Leisner says ‘be on stage, not in the audience’. It is also helpful to prioritise what you want to portray before you stand in front of an audience. For example, if you are giving a speech you might want to ensure that the theme is clear. That is your top priority and concentrate on that when giving the speech. This will help you concentrate, and will prevent you wandering in the speech, or focusing on the audience. Your priority might be to have the right tone of voice, and that will be your focal point during the speech. The final golden rule is to enjoy your performance, and enjoy sharing it with the audience, and hopefully enhancing their lives. (Continued in next issue)
