Hello Friends, It’s been an eventful and exciting time since our last Carers News magazine. A huge cheer was heard across our City and County for the many thousands of Carers during Carers week in June this year. This would not have been possible without our many partners including Derby City Council, our hospitals and GP practices in the NHS. A big thank you to them all. Carers Pledge During Carers Week we launched the Carers Pledge, this is a way for organisations to make their commitment to our work improving the lives of Carers - and we could not have asked for a better response! We will continue asking organisations to join our Pledge celebrating the work of Carers over the coming months and year. Dignity and respect Congratulations to our staff and volunteers in gaining the Dignity and Respect Award in recognition of the

way they work with Carers and their cared-for in delivering all our services. This is a national standard, once again demonstrating the excellence of our staff. New website Please go online and click to our newly launched site: www.derbyshirecarers.co.uk We will be developing this further over the coming months, it will become a place where Carers meet and share their experiences. Coming soon - watch out for the on-line Carers videos that illustrate the journey of Carers. The right direction Over the summer months, the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers have thought hard about our direction of travel as an organisation. Some facts have emerged from these discussions: Our work is greatly valued by Carers and their families; we are doing more than we have ever done - and yet the need is growing faster and faster. We need more people to

meet that need; and therefore we need more finances and volunteers. Therefore this Autumn we will be raising funds for our charity and recruiting further volunteers. We are launching our Best Breaksfast Fund Raising Campaign - turn to page 6 for further details. Please help if you can, even if only in a small way, as you know - many hands make light work. Finally... I hope we will meet up at our forthcoming celebration events - the Carers Ball on the 17th October and at the combined AGM and Carers Service on 9th December. It would be wonderful to see you there.

From September 2014, local authorities are scrapping the old statementing system and introducing Education Health Care Plans (EHC’s), which will support a child up to the age of 25. EHC’s look at a child’s support needs across education, health and social care and should put an end to arguments about who will fund what. Young Carers are given more rights, making it

mandatory to assess their needs. However, there is no absolute duty to ensure those needs are met. Parent Carers, too, have a right to an assessment, if the authority believes they may have needs for support or if the parent requests it. Care Act 2014 The Care Act comes into force in stages over the next couple of years and

refers only to adults and Carers of adults. The first principle of the Act is that ‘well-being’ is at the core of the local authorities’ responsibilities. This responsibility extends to all adults, whether a ‘service user’ or a Carer. There are links directly to each of the new Acts on our website: www.derbyshirecarers.co.uk Alternatively click on www.legislation.gov.uk and search for each Act.

Welcome to our new Patron Imagine our surprise, when a very official looking letter landed in our Head Office’s mailbox, addressed from, quite simply: ‘Chatsworth, Bakewell, Derbyshire’. Take that surprise to it’s highest level as the letter stated:

‘‘

Dear Narinder Sharma, Thank you very much for your letter that arrived for my attention last week. I am honoured that you have asked me to become the Patron of the Derbyshire Carers Association and I am very pleased to accept this kind offer. The work that you do providing essential support to Carers is well received not only by them but across the community where we know your organistion is held in high regard. I look forward to hearing more about your work as time goes by and for now sendmy best wishes. Yours Sincerely, Stoker Devonshire The Duke of Devonshire KCVO, CBE, DL

The Duke of Devonshire agreeing to be our Patron, how can you top that! One of the most well-known, influential people in our county agreeing to be your official Patron is pretty much, as good as it gets! But even better, after we contacted Mollie Mosely, his private secretary, the Duke managed to squeeze into his extremely busy schedule, time for our Chief Exec: Narinder Sharma and Marilyn Hambly (vice chair) to visit over at Chatsworth House. There’s not many people in the County who haven’t visited Chatsworth at some time in their lives; the beautiful house and gardens, country fairs, musical extravaganzas, horse trials and numerous other events, make it a natural focal point. Ideal for a family picnic or just a stroll by the river to glimpse the herds of deer roaming the park. We take it for granted, but we’re lucky to have such a jewel on our doorstep. In the past we have organised visits to the House for our Carers and everyone had a delightful time with only good comments regarding the house, gardens and knowledgable staff. But our next visit was business only, with protocols duly adhered to, our first meeting with the Duke went very well - and after initial introductions - we got the business of photographs out of the way, so we could explain exactly what our charity does for nearly 11,000 Carers registered with us.

‘‘

We explained our hopes, plans and ambitions as the Duke made notes and asked some very relevant questions regarding our services and gave an understanding to the role of our Carers. But unfortunately, all too soon, our time with the Duke was over as he had other people to meet. How he fits all the responsibilities, meetings and obligations into his day is quite an achievement, one day the Royal Family are visiting, the next it’s DCA. We extend our sincerest thanks to the Duke of Devonshire (and his team) for fitting us into his schedule, it was greatly appreciated.

Carers Week Carers week 2014 was an amazing week for Derbyshire Carers Association and everyone involved. From the 915th June many different events ran throughout the week. During the week Derbyshire Carers Association was able to reach out to over 100 carers who did not know about any support they could receive. Overall, we were able to engage over 500 Carers.

CARERS EXPRESS May 2013 Derbyshire Carers Association piloted the Carers Express at the YMCA, Derby City. This was targeted at Health Professionals within community settings, raising awareness of Carers support needs and also raising awareness of the support organisations available to Carers in Derby City. Derbyshire Carers Association would like to say thank you to all the organisations that came on the day to inform health professionals about Carer Community services. Feedback from health professionals included: •’’Extra contacts within the city, very useful” •“I have found out that more is available for carers than I imagined” •“Vast amount of information and contact details delivered succinctly and intensely. Thank you.” Are you a health professional? Would you like to find out more about Carer services? Please contact:helen.weston@derbyshirecarers.co.uk or megan.singleton@derbyshirecarers.co.uk

Monday the 9th was our annual Cathedral Service to celebrate Carers. We were supported by our CEO, The High Sheriff of Derbyshire, His Honor, the Presiding Judge of Derby, our Founder and members of our Trustee Board. The Breakaway Singers also supported us again with two lovely songs. Mr Reg Jackson, a Carer from Erewash kindly read a bible reading and members of the Carers Writing Group read poems from their new book. The Precentor, Canon Chris Moorsom lead the service and over 100 Carers attended, staying for refreshments afterwards. Our picture shows Carers lighting a candle during the interval and having time to reflect in the beautiful and peaceful atmosphere of Derby Cathedral. Thank you also to our volunteers who supported us.

Carers Visit the iPro Stadium During Carers Week we were able to invite ten Carers to take a tour of the iPro Football Stadium at Pride Park, Derby. The tour lasted for an hour with refreshments at Starbucks afterwards. Many thanks to the organisers who took the time to make everyone feel welcome. It was a very enoyable experience for all. Ann Hamp, Connect Worker

A week before Carers Week 9th to 15th June, Derbyshire Carers Association launched the Carers Pledge. In 2013 DCA held consultations with carers about support they received from services, for example, hospitals and G.P practices. Derbyshire Carers Association received a variety of feedback. From this feedback we have developed the Carers Pledge, this is a pledge for organisations and community’s to sign. Pledging that their organisation will support and recognise Carers alongside raising carer awareness. We are delighted that many G.P surgeries in Derby City are signing up to support Carers. There is already some great work in GP practices and this can be shared to support all Carers living in Derbyshire to expect the same service regardless of which surgery they are registered with Derby City Council have joined the pledge to support Carers. During Carers week, Councillor Martin Repton signed the Pledge on behalf of the City Council. Derbyshire County Cricket Club have signed the Carers Pledge, to support Carers.

Derby County Cricket Club

In order to care safely and in good health, Carers need information, support, respect and recognition DCA hope that the Carers Pledge will meet this ethos and support Carers to continue in their caring role.

Breakfast

Georgie’s Baked Bean Challenge

fundraising

Campaign The ‘Best Breakfast’ campaign encourages people to raise money for Carers by hosting a breakfast event for friends and family in October and November. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives us fuel and energy to help us get through the day. Many Carers skip breakfast because they simply don’t have the time to prepare or eat it. Host your own breakfast event and raise funds for unpaid Carers services in Derby and Derbyshire. Invite your friends and family to join you for breakfast during October or November and raise money for Carers. Eat breakfast and raise a cup of tea to Carers and encourage people to wake up to the issue of caring.

Georgina Greenhough, Apprentice Business Administrator at our Centre is doing the Baked Bean Challenge to support our Best Breakfast Campaign. Watch this space as Georgie is drenched in baked beans! If you would like to sponsor Georgie’s brave quest then please call in at our Centre on Babington Lane. Good luck Georgie!

Ambassadors

Hospital and GP Carers Awareness

Thank you to the dedicated Carers as Ambassadors Volunteers who give their time to influence positive changes within health and social care in Derby City. The team has raised Carer awareness amongst social care staff, senior professionals, commissioners and council leaders. By no means has it been easy and I know some of you have gone that extra mile, to ensure Carers have a voice.

Carers Needed!

Derbyshire Carers Association is working with hospitals and GP’s surgeries to deliver Carers Awareness Training and raise the awareness of Carers within Health settings. In the past we have delivered training to Nursing and Social Worker students at universities but now, to compliment the very successful Carers Pledge, we will be delivering Carers Awareness Sessions to new employees at hospitals and in the Community as part of their induction. To emphasise what Carers’ roles and responsibilities are, we would love to invite Carers to come along to these sessions and talk to health professionals about their Caring journey and experiences. If you would be interested in joining the Carers Awareness Team please E-Mail Helen Weston: helen.weston@derbyshirecarers.co.uk or call: 01246 222373. All expenses will be reimbursed.

However, we must not be complacent as changes are inevitable and it’s through your influence and powers of persuasion that we will continue to ensure our service continues to run. I know for some it has been a turbulent journey as you all have a passion for what you believe in and take a firm stance on this, so well done. I would like to welcome Marta Bruzgul, Jane Wynn, Paul Strachan, Irene Phillips & Doug Banton who have joined our team and project. You all have expertise in different areas which I’m pleased to say will be of use and make a difference. Finally, recruitment is ongoing so please feel free to give me a call for an Ambassadors pack and application form. - Amran Ashraf, Carer Ambassador Co-ordinator

Yearly Healthchecks for LD Carers All GP practices in Derby have agreed to offer people with learning disabilities an annual physical health check. If you care for a person with a learning disability aged 14 or over then ask the surgery to book an appointment. Some illnesses and conditions can be hereditary, or the risk of developing them is hereditary, so it would help the GP/Practice Nurse to know the family medical history. If your relative lives in a Care Home, or is supported by other people, then let those carers know about any illness of close family members that you think the GP should be aware of. The patient should leave the health check with a Health Action Plan, which is a new addition for GPs this year. This is a list of the persons health needs, and identifies what actions are required to help the person improve their health. If the person has a blue Health file or their own health action plan, the information from the GP or nurse should be added to it. The GP might refer your relative to other parts of the NHS for further advice such as the healthy lifestyle service or for further tests. The GP may ask the special NHS Learning disability service to help a few people. This does not replace usual NHS services but can help people who have extra difficulties use the ordinary services. For information about the special learning disability services contact Royal Derby: Debbie Edwards at the Royal Derby Hospital on 01332 788611. You can add the name of the person that you care for to the learning disability list at the Hospital by contacting the Hospital Liaison nurse. It’s a good idea to prepare for any Hospital visit by completing a ‘Traffic Light Assessment,’ some areas call this a Hospital Passport. It helps to

identify if the Hospital needs to do things in a different way to help your relative. This can be used by other people with disabilities also. If the person you care for goes to a day service or for a short break check that the service has an A&E grabsheet. This is the must know medical information that you probably hold in your head, if there is a medical emergency this means that the service has important information readily available. The East Midland Ambulance service are aware of the A&E grabsheets, Hospital Passports and Health Action Plans. The out of hours GP service and the 111 service cannot access your medical notes. They have created a system whereby a clinician e.g. GP/ Nurse can send them a care plan, called a Rightcare plan. If the person you care for has complex health needs, or needs the out of hours/ ambulance service more than most people then ask your GP practice for a Rightcare plan. LD carers may want to check out the LD carers web page created by family carers in Derbyshire. This has information about the different groups that you may be interested in such as the local LD Partnership Boards. You can also give your opinion to the family carers about the LD healthcheck.http://www.ldcarerscommunity.org.uk/ For family carers the learning disability annual health check is an ideal opportunity for you to ask to be added to your GP Carers’ register. For further information, please contact:Jackie Fleeman, Lead Strategic Health Facilitator for Adults with learning disabilities Jackie.fleeman@derbyshcft.nhs.uk St Andrews House, 2nd Floor, 201 London Rd, Derby 01332 268455

Welcome to our new Carer Link Workers My name is Marcia Salmon and I am one of two new Carer Link Workers to be employed at DCA in Derby. My role involves completing assessments for carers as well as supporting them when needed. I have been working here for nearly two months and I have settled into my role very well. My previous roles have included working in customer services as well as working with children and families in residential units, secure units and as a Family Support Worker. I was a carer for my mother following a car accident from 1996 until her passing in 2011. I am able to view things from a carers perspective and to empathise with some of the difficulties that arise due to this. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Hi my name is Indi Sarai. It’s been two months since I joined the Carers Assessment team and the time has flown by. I really enjoy my role, particularly as I am a Carer myself and understand the issues and challenges that Carers face. My past work experiences include working with older and vulnerable people, with a number of organisations in Derby. In my spare time I enjoy walking and spending time with my family and friends. I am also a qualified therapist and have helped out at DCA Pamper Days in the past, so some of you will recognise me if you had a manicure or a facial as part of your Carers Breaks!

Sponsorship Fundraising at 13,000 ft For carers week in June I decided to fundraise for DCA by taking part in a Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) – Sky Dive. I contacted UK Parachuting at Sibson airfield in Cambridgeshire which was the nearest parachuting school that trained you in the AFF, and as this was my chosen jump (tandem being the other option). I had a full days training and pass an exam to qualify me to jump safely. It is crucial for it to be a clear day to enable you to safely participate in the AFF so week ends went by and I waited patiently anticipating a clear Sunday day, that day soon arrived and it was time to take the plunge……literally. Free falling at 125mph from 13’000ft to 6’000ft – at which point I pull my parachute and steer down to landing area.

An experience of a life time that I will cherish forever, and all for a worth while cause of raising funds for DCA. I would like to thank twin sisters Victoria and Rebecca (my instructors who jumped out with me), all the guys at Sibson airfield and most importantly to all my sponsors, especially Carer’s who were kind enough to donate - I raised £650. Amran Ashraf Carers Connect Worker/Carers Ambassador Officer

Cycling to Skeggy By Andrew Spriggs, Emergency Planning Officer On 18th and 19th May, along with two friends Tom and Steve, I cycled over 90 miles from Chesterfield to Skegness over two days, raising funds for DCA. Despite the humidity and relentless sun the ride went extremely well. Apart from a few hiccups we thoroughly enjoyed the overnight stay in Lincoln and a well deserved curry. It was a pleasure to do the ride and raise funds for the Charity I work for. We were able to raise over £270 to help DCA and valuable work we do with Carers in Derby and Derbyshire. -8-

Chaddesden Carers Group Chaddesden Carers Group is held every third Tuesday of the Month at Chaddesden Fire Station, Nottingham Road, Chaddesden from 10.00am until 12.00pm. Any carer may attend, you don’t have to be a Chaddesden resident – you’ll be so pleased that you made the effort!

Carry on Canoeing

I have three young adult children, two have additional needs; Between them they have Autism spectrum disorder, visual agnosia, gastric rumination, hyper mobility syndrome, Atypical Autism, sensory processing disorder, and both have an immunity condition. I have cared all my life for family members, grandparents, uncles. Caring for a child is so very different. I am looking forward to my new role as one of the Carers as Ambassadors Team to help improve child/adult services in Derby City.
