elcome to the autumn 2012 edition of Derbyshire Carers’ very popular WCarers News magazine.

‘‘

It seems strange to be writing about autumn when we haven’t yet had a summer, but the year is progressing at what seems to be an alarming rate and we still have so much to do! Delivered with this edition is an invitation for Carers to attend our Annual General Meeting, to be held this September at the County Hall. Matlock (see page 3) and also enclosed is a Carers’ Questionnaire. We need your opinions of our services, please take the time to complete the questionnaire and give us your thoughts and views - we are, after all, driven by Carers. If any of the letters are missing, please telephone our head office to request a further copy.

Derbyshire Carers celebrated Carers Week this year with a visit to the delightful Sudbury Museum of Childhood. Carers had the opportunity to explore the museum with its eight galleries, discover and reminisce over the childhoods of times gone by, wander in the delightful gardens and enjoy lunch together in the Coach House Restaurant.

Top marks for Sudbury visit!

Teaming up for Transition gets MP’s vote

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins is calling on GPs to register anyone who takes on a significant care role for a member of their family. Medical professionals’ focus on the needs of the patient has often meant that the needs of those who care for them have gone unnoticed. Mr. Perkins met with staff and volunteers at the Chesterfield Carers Centre on West Bars to mark National Carers Week. He heard from the Centre’s staff and volunteers about the pressures many Carers face and their concern that people are struggling to cope alone. In Derbyshire there are over 110,000 people who take on full-time care responsibilities, but just 5,000 are registered as Carers. Deborah Gough, Area Manager for Derbyshire Carers, said: ‘There are a great many people across Chesterfield who take on care responsibilities without advice about benefits, respite care or help and guidance from professionals. ‘Too often, we only see Carers when their lives have reached crisis point and they have been pushed into a state of ill health themselves.” Deborah added: ‘It’s vital to get recognition for them as valued partners in the delivery of care.’ Derbyshire Carers Centre is now spearheading an initiative, Teaming Up for Transition, to connect people who suddenly find themselves with care responsibilities, with support and advocacy groups.

Toby Perkins said: ‘I commend Derbyshire Carers Centre for trailblazing this fantastic initiative.’ ‘GPs assess the medical needs of their patients, but it’s their Carers who need support too, in what can be a stressful and bewildering new environment.’ Mr. Perkins added: ‘I have written to GP practices in my constituency to promote ‘Teaming Up for Transition’ and to encourage medical professionals to register new Carers so that those who take on this selfless work can get the advice and support they need.’ ‘I want to say how impressed I was by the work of Derbyshire Carers and Carers organisations across the UK who support particularly vulnerable clients, made more so by their invisibility in the system.’ ‘I hope that my support has done something to raise the profile of Carers in general and to flag up the new Teaming Up For Transition project launched in Chesterfield.’

Partnership Board

I was just attending a coffee morning at the Newhall Day Centre when I happened to mention I may have a little spare time. Pam Gill who is the Co-ordinator of Elected Carers in the County pounced on me, inviting me with open arms to join the volunteer group. I explained that I knew very little, if anything at all about Derbyshire Carers and the Partnership Board, but this didn’t deter Pam at all. Since January year I’ve had so much training, mostly organised by Pam, that I realise how important this position can be to help Carers in my area - South Derbyshire. I now run my own coffee morning each month at the Newhall Day Centre. Last month I had a guest speaker, Phil Milton, who is a member of the Will Writers Federation and solicitors from a local company to give us a talk on the pitfalls of making a will for people with learning disabilities, their advice was invaluable. I along with Pam, attend meetings of the Partnership Boards throughout Derbyshire, acquiring information from different groups to help me in my work. Pam organised in-house I.T. training for me so that I can use the Internet to seek information on various subjects that effect Carers. We also now have a web site of our own to communicate with each other, this I find really interesting. All in all, I’m pleased I joined Derbyshire Carers, as I’m retired, it has given me a new interest in life and in the process help others. Trevor Slatter

Food Bank helps out

In September 2011 Mrs. Tokkie Haywood, concerned by the increasing levels of poverty within her community, developed a new charity - with the purpose of providing food for people in need. Living Hope Food Bank operates every Wednesday between 1pm and 3pm from the Abundant Life Christian Centre in Holmewood, Chesterfield, providing three different sized parcels containing essential foodstuffs. Recipients come as self referrals and are interviewed by a Living Hope leader to ascertain need, most come with a voucher endorsed through a variety of care agencies, Social Services and Sure Start for children. Most weeks, the charity provides for over 150 people. The food bank has recently opened a charity shop in Holmewood to help support the work, but all donations are gratefully received. Tel: Mrs. Haywood on 01246 857081 for details.

Teaming Up for Transition

From September, the team will be on hand at flu clinics to offer advice, information and support. The team will be easily recognisable with posters, flyers and a transition banner stand within health settings. The Team can be reached on 01246 222373 ext 3 or email: transition@derbyshirecarers.co.uk

An exciting new project has been launched in Derbyshire to help improve Carers' health. The Teaming Up For Transition Left to right: Karen Moran, Anna Durrant, Project is a Richard Colgrave, Kelly Gibbon, Helen Weston Department of and Barbara Cannon Health funded initiative to reach out to community hospitals and GP's surgeries, in order to liaise with health professionals, increase referrals and identify and support Carers. Development of local support will be a key component of the project; therefore it is important that volunteers come forward to increase our network of Carer Champions who can sustain this activity, once the team has moved through an area. The focus of this initiative is intervention; the Transition Team will work to ensure Carers are supported earlier, at the point of hospital discharge. This means that many Carers will get advice, support and choice, which otherwise would only be accessed later, at a crisis point in the Carer's health. The team is to work from the south of the county, heading north from South Derbyshire, Erewash, Chesterfield, Amber Valley, to the Derbyshire Dales, High Peak and Glossop. Our aim is to cover the whole of Derbyshire within one year. The project is a massive coupe for Derbyshire. There is a renewed focus on the Carer and reducing the impact on the health service and of doctor's time. In time, patient care will improve as their Carers health and well-being is sustained.

Carers Rights Day 2012

C AT C H Carers Advice and Training for Confidence in Health

Carers Rights Day is taking place on Friday 30th November and the theme is 'Getting help in tough times', focussing on helping Carers: Find financial help. Get a helping hand. Make the most of technology. Carers Rights Day is all about getting information to Carers - we know that it can take years for people to find out about their rights as a Carer and the support available to them. Each year Carers UK organises the Carers Rights Day to: Increase the take up of benefits – it’s estimated that millions of Carers’ benefits aren’t claimed each year. Make sure Carers know their rights – every year, more than 2 million people become Carers, many don’t identify themselves as Carers and miss out on support. Guide Carers towards practical support - it's not just about benefits. Carers often do not realise practical support is available, like replacement care to give the Carer time off, help with lifting and bathing, equipment and home adaptations that can be vital in protecting Carers’ health. Raise awareness of the needs of Carers - Carers Rights Day raises awareness of the needs of Carers with the public, decision makers and professionals. At a time of rising living costs, salary freezes and job losses many families are struggling across the UK. But families affected by illness and disabilities are often the hardest hit, as they struggle with the additional costs of caring and lost earnings; and now face the risk of cuts to essential services and benefits. These tough times mean that there has never been a more important time for Carers to know their rights and access all the support they are entitled to. Carers Rights Day is about getting Carers the information and advice they need to claim benefits, access practical support and find out how technology can help take the pressure off. Carers UK

Courses arranged for the project are to be held at: The Chesterfield Carers Centre Monday 1st, 8th, 15th October 2012 10.00am-12.30pm If you are a Carer, aged 60+ and provide care for a minimum of 14 hours per week and would like to reserve a place on one of these very popular and worthwhile courses, please call Becky on: 01246 222373. The last few months have seen calls from more Carers who are seeking support, asking for access to the Carer Breaks Funding - via a Carers Assessment and applications to have an Emergency Card. Should you feel you would like to know more, please ring the office and we will help you to apply. The promotional stand held at Sainsbury’s as part of the National Carer’s Week was a great success and information was given through-out the week to new Carers who had no idea of what help may be out there to support them with their caring role, aper some of which N e w sp il a M n e Burto were in need of sy of th e rt u o C urgent advice. It is very difficult to know where to find new Carers, as people often look as though they are coping very well. Thankfully many of you recognised that we’re friendly and not selling double glazing, so signed up! We held a coffee morning on the Monday to celebrate the start and managed to get 15 Carers to attend at extremely short notice, as they were only advised of the event the week before! Those who came had a fabulous coffee or tea and a lovely cake, were also entered in a free raffle and the prizes included a day at a spa for two, vouchers for Sainsbury’s and even a meal out at a local pub! Staff at Sainsbury’s were very supportive and were pleased to see Carers attending at such short notice, hopefully we can do the same next year for those who missed out. I promise to let you know well in advance next year. Planned future events include the monthly Carer’s Support Group, held at the CVS building, dates begin from September, 2012. The Christmas Carers Service: I would appreciate your involvement if you are free, to help to plan and offer your favourite hymn. We have an offer for the Methodist Church at Church Gresley, which is accessible for all, around early December. If you can help in any way, please give me a call. I’m based at the CVS offices on Grove street and there is a wealth of support to be found here - with many services run from the building, including:

Prize Draw Club

N

E

W !

Derbyshire Carers Association

Interested? Contact Tan Yung on 01332 200002 for further details

How would you like the chance to win a cash prize every month?

This exciting new Prize Draw will be launched at our Annual General Meeting on the 27th September.

Would this make a difference to you? If the answer is YES - then why not have a go with this new, exciting opportunity. With as many as five chances to win every month, YOU could win a cash prize!

Our Prize Draw Club makes it easy for you to donate to a worthwhile cause - helping Carers who need support and at the same time, you could win top cash prizes from our monthly fund. All for as little as £1 per month, just £12 per year. Your contribution will have a meaningful impact on the work that we do and make it possible for us to support Carers who are people that deserve our respect, help and gratitude. The sad fact is that many of us will become Carers at some point in our lives, whether it’s for a friend, parent, child or partner. It is estimated that there are six million Carers in the UK, of which 110,000 live in Derbyshire. Remember that this could happen to you, at anytime. That is when our support and help will be invaluable. Derbyshire Carers Association (DCA), the leading Carer’s charity in Derbyshire, provides support, advice, information and representation to and for Carers. We will use the funds to enable Carers to make a realistic choice as to whether they wish to be Carers, to value their own feelings and needs as well as those of the person being cared for.

We work to ensure that all Carers should have the same rights, hopes, expectations and choices as people who are not Carers. DCA will raise awareness of the Carers role to ensure that they are recognised as people first, Carers second. When you join the Prize Draw Club, you will be given your own unique DCA lottery number. At £1 per number per month, you can have as many numbers as you like and increase your chances of winning. Each number goes into our monthly draw on the last Friday of each month and the winner is chosen at random by computer and verified by an independent witness. All winners will be notified directly, as well as being featured in our quarterly newsletter and on our website. Why not introduce a friend; improve your chances; increase the prizes on offer and help make a big difference to Carer’s lives across Derbyshire. If you introduce a friend you will get a free entry into the prize draw, and as more people join the Club, the fund will grow and the prizes increase too. Every single £1 helps, as a charity, our services are funded from limited finances, many of which are now under considerable strain. Therefore, your contribution will be vital - to enable DCA to continue the very important and much-needed support for Carers in Derby and Derbyshire.
