Derbyshire Carers Association

Didn’t we have a lovely time... the day we went to Chatsworth!

Carers from across Derbyshire braved the icy winter winds as they flocked to Chatsworth House for a guided tour and traditional English Tea as part of the highly successful Carers Breaks Scheme. Accompanied by the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Carers viewed the house at its magnificent best - fully decorated for Christmas. See page 2 for full story.

Chatsworth House, in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District - home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire

Successful first year!

This month we are delighted to be celebrating the first anniversary of the ground-breaking Innovations Project. Starting in the north of the County in 2011, Derbyshire Carers Association (DCA) in partnership with the Community Hospitals, set out to identify Carers at the onset of their caring journey - and to raise awareness of Carers throughout hospitals. A year later we have been overwhelmed by the response and are delighted to share that we have now registered and supported over 100 new Carers in Derbyshire who have joined DCA after being identified in the hospitals. Throughout the county there are currently 19 Carer’s Champions who directly support Carers within the hospitals and we have run 35 Carer Clinics, where Carers can come along and receive support or information on the wards. Dales Carer, Lesley, joined DCA after finding out about us on Rowsley Ward at Newholme Hospital. She writes: Well as they say - what a difference a day makes! When visiting a friend at Rowsley Ward, Newholme Hospital, Helen Weston approached me and introduced me to DCA. I told Helen I was caring for my elderly parents who were both ill. Helen then provided me with the Carers Pack, from then on, I attended the support groups held monthly at the Whitworth Hospital, it was helpful to meet both Carers and staff who were both supportive and informative. As Carers, our health and well-being is as important as the people we care for, so, DCA provide regular relaxing experiences such as shopping trips at Christmas, Murder Mystery Evenings, meals out, visits to interesting places, cooking demos with lunch, flower arranging and pamper sessions with tea, coffee and a chat.

These events help by giving us a chance to make new friends, as some people become lonely if house-bound. Friendly staff will attend your home to make life easier, giving confidential advice and help in making challenging decisions and help with admin. DCA are providing support in every aspect of care, giving Carers confidence in knowing we are providing the best and making a difference.

Moving the project on DCA are now looking at developing the project further to reach Carers in Employment, by working together with employers to offer more support, to ensure Carers can achieve a work/ life balance. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the hospital workers who have supported the project and worked so hard to reach and support Carers in Derbyshire. Helen Weston Derbyshire Carers Association Derbyshire Carers Association is pleased to announce that we have booked another visit to Chatsworth House in partnership with The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and Crossroads ‘60+ Carers Wellbeing Promotion Project.’ Chatsworth at Easter will take place on Monday 26th March between 11.00 and 3.00. There will be a tour of the house followed by a traditional afternoon tea and a visit to the splendid gardens. If you are a Carer aged 60+ and live in Derbyshire, Derby City or Glossop and you would like to book a place, please call Helen Weston on 01629 812132.

Exciting developments

ello everyone and H welcome to our first newsletter of 2012.

As usual - when you’re busy, the time just flies by! It seems no time since we saw many of you at the Tideswell Church Service and the Christmas visit to Chatsworth House. We started the New Year by welcoming four new members of staff to our Derby City offices: Dawn; Megan; Simon and Antje. The new staff are a result of our successful funding application to Derby City Council - and I’m delighted to say, everyone is settling in well in their roles.

Concerns for the future: We are concerned that the number of Carers in Derby and Derbyshire is forecast to increase significantly, as more people live into very old age and more people survive major illness but often with significant health needs. In order to meet this increased

demand for our support, we are actively seeking additional funding from a range of sources and I’m pleased to be able to report some success. We heard in January that we were successful in our bid to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers. The resulting monies will be used to offer a break to Carers aged 60 and over. Please see page three for further details and information. The team are hard at work planning - and we’ll also be asking the Carers that take part in the project and our Carers Voice members to contribute their ideas, so we are able to offer what Carers really want. We are, after all, Carer led. Can you help? We have created a new fundraising committee, to help organise the raising of much needed finances to enable our charity to achieve even more for Carers. We’d love to hear from anyone who could

Visit to Chatsworth

The 19th December 2011 was the day of the much anticipated Christmas at Chatsworth trip. Unfortunately the weather was not what anyone hoped for, however this was soon forgotten when we walked into Chatsworth House with it's warm and welcoming fire. I haven’t been to the house when it’s been decorated for Christmas before - so didn't know what to expect. It was simply magical! Around every corner was a new surprise, each one met with gasps. The decorations were done with such wonderful imagination and attention to detail. For a time it was easy to forget about the outside world. Once around the house it was time for lunch. Two rooms had been elegantly prepared. Lunch was such a treat! The food was plentiful and delicious served by attentive staff. There was delicate sandwiches and cakes and even scones with jam and clotted cream. Everyone enjoyed chatting around the tables, it was a good time to share experiences and opinions on being Carers. All said that they had enjoyed the decorations and lunch. What was just as important was that everyone had some time to relax and have a day just for themselves. I think everyone who went on the trip would join me in thanking the Chatsworth staff. Nothing was too much trouble and they did us proud. After lunch it was time to say goodbye. It was a day I will remember for a long time. I met some lovely people. I left with a lovely warm glow inside and feeling that it was the perfect way to start Christmas - and I don't think I was the only one. Elaine Scott, DCA Volunteer

volunteer - either time or their expertise - to assist us, just call one of our local offices. As you can see in this newsletter, the Carers Voice Project and the Learning Disability Partnership Boards have successfully continued to recruit more Carers. It is really important that Carers have their input, as the services they use are constantly evolving without Carers the country would not be able to cope!

Chief Executive Officer

New Dawn at DCA

My name is Dawn Campbell, the new Carer Support Worker based in the Derby City offices on Babbington Lane. For the last two years, I worked as a CSW for the Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire, gaining intense knowledge about caring, but due to my husband’s work commitments moved back to Derbyshire last year. I managed to get a job supporting people with challenging behaviour and learning difficulities, but longed to continue my role supporting Carers, and scoured the Internet until I discovered DCA had opened a Carers Centre in the City last July. When I rang the office, I was thrilled to learn there was a CSW position being made available in November. I checked DCA website everyday until the advert appeared and I quickly applied. Attending the first interview, I remember being extremely nervous, but the staff team were very warm, friendly and approachable and soon made me feel at home. The journey back to my home in Portsmouth was full of optimism, but I just had to wait with fingers crossed to see if I was successful! When the phone finally rang a few days later, I was so pleased to be told I’d got the job - and would be able to carry on my role in Derbyshire, where I had previously lived for 33 years! I’m now working in the Derby office, 9am to 5pm, where I support Carers with information, advice and advocacy, tailored to individuals needs.

Carers Breaks Scheme changes

Page 1

Upto the end of March 2012, Carers who live in the county, can now access up to £250 as a one-off annual payment to support them to have a life outside caring and enhance their health and wellbeing. The need for this grant should be identified through the Carer Assessment process. Where Carers already have an Assessment in place, a Carers Break application form will suffice. Criteria: Carers will be caring for at least 35 hours a week and will be able to evidence a ‘major impact’ in at least 6 areas in their DCC Contingency Plan (for example, their ability to get a good night’s sleep or the impact of caring on their health and wellbeing). Major impact is defined as: ‘Caring severely limits your ability to maintain this aspect of your life. This causes you much concern, stress or distress’. How the money can be used The money cannot be used to provide social care for the cared-for person. Funding must be used to support the Carer. The money could be used in a number of ways. For example; as a contribution towards a gym membership or supporting another hobby. The money can be used to purchase more practical help, for example, in the garden or with cleaning. It could also be used to purchase a sitting service in order to give the Carer a break from caring. Process A copy of a recent Carers Assessment or application form if an Assessment has already been carried out, should be sent to: michaela@derbyshirecarers.co.uk. Quotes for the proposed claim should also be submitted. The application will be considered and, if approved, the Carer will receive a letter and cheque. If the Carer would prefer the cheque to go directly to the provider, for example, a cleaning company, this should be stated on the application form. The form identifying how money will be spent will need to evidence that the money available will help to improve the Carer’s health and wellbeing and will provide a break outside their caring role. These will be monitored by the panel so will require clear explanation from the start. Activities booked prior to this change of administration of the Carers Breaks funds will be honoured. Carers having previously accessed the Carers Breaks Scheme are able to apply for this funding. Application forms are available from Kye or Nicky at Head Office. Telephone: 01773 743355. A panel will meet monthly to process the applications.

Carers Voice update

The first Carers Voice area meetings held at the beginning of January went fantastically well. Well attended by experienced, dedicated and understanding Carers who expressed just how important it is to listen to what Carers actually want - and how much of a difference they can make to the lives of other Carers living throughout Derbyshire. We are still looking for further Carers Voice members, so if you are a Carer and able to spare a few hours every couple of months - and would like to share your ideas and thoughts, please ring Helen Weston on 01629 812132 for further information. Together we can make a difference.

Lisa writes...

Since moving to the South Derbyshire CVS in October 2011 as a new Area Co-ordinator, I’ve had a fantastic opportunity to refer Carers for help within hours of a home visit, for practical help through the HandyVan Scheme and other similar projects based at Grove Street, Swadlincote. Christmas saw a chance to provide presents for four families and some emergency food hampers to help people through the festive season. This was a ‘first’ for me and it’s great to be close to such fast responding networks within CVS. The office is now open Friday or Monday for drop-in, 9.30am-2.30pm or by appointment on other days. Home visits by request across the South Derbyshire area are by arrangement. During a home visit, the Charity is able to offer time to listen to individual Carer’s needs, establishing how they feel about the level of support they currently have, consider alternatives and help access any further assistance that may be required. Often Carers are worried about what would happen should they be unable to give the care that is required, if their own health deteriorates. By contacting our office it is possible to complete a Derbyshire County Council contingency plan and set up your own Emergency Carers Card. As a result of a home visit the Carer may have access to funding, benefits, voluntary agencies, social care, health related support or just a chance to off-load and talk about the ways in which caring for someone has an impact on their lives. Discussing the care that you are giving allows us a chance to explain the services available across the South Derbyshire Area. There are two Carer Support Groups in the area at Hilton and Swadlincote, which run bi-monthly and monthly, contact the office for further details. Swadlincote CVS office: 21st March; 18th April and 16th May 2012. Wellbrook Medical Centre: 20th March, 10.00 till 12.00. Tues 8th May,10.00 till 12.00. Tootsies Footcare for the over 50’s

Foot care plays an important role in helping to maintain independence and mobility and problems such as difficulties bending to reach can make even the most basic foot care tasks difficult to manage. Tootsies is a new footcare service designed to offer affordable basic footcare to the over 50’s and is a joint project being run by Age UK Derby and Derbyshire, Futures Homescape and Derbyshire County PCT. Their team of trained footcare workers are visiting venues in the area on a monthly basis, offering a friendly, sociable environment for people to book footcare appointments. Each session includes a foot soak, toenail cutting and filing, removal of hard skin and application of moisture cream to the feet. The first session includes a foot assessment and treatment for £17 where you will also receive your own nail clippers and file which you then bring to subsequent appointments. All following treatments are then priced at £12. Please contact Jennifer Acons on 01773 768240 for further details.

Emma on 0115 9468881 or Liz on 0115 9320576 Hello, my name is Antje and I am pleased to tell you my personal success story of 2011 and how volunteering at DCA helped me to back into work: In 2004 I gave up my post as a hospital social worker in Germany and emigrated to the UK. After several years of experiencing various other areas of work I decided in 2011 to return to an office environment within the social care sector. At first that felt like a “double whammy”, knowing I would face a foreign social system and technological advances. I thought volunteering at DCA with its mission close to my heart, would be the most effective way of acclimatising myself and improving my employability - I couldn’t have been more right. It turned out to be the most valuable experience for several reasons: Thanks to the considerate induction/supervision of Becky the Volunteer Co-ordinator and the positive regard shown towards my contributions from all staff, my confidence was quickly restored. Furthermore conversations about realistic chances in the job market, my expectations and abilities contributed to get a clear sense of professional direction again. Becky was sensitive to my need to increase pace carefully so that I could be eased back into a working rhythm. This was particularly valuable to me after having experienced an extended period of unemployment and compromised health. Then everything seemed to fall into place: Thanks to ‘the right people talking to each other at the right time,’ I was directed towards the opportunity of temporary paid work in the Emergency Planning Department in the Derby office. Luckily for me, after two months of doing this work, a parttime EPO-post became available, which I applied for and was successful at interview. It feels I have found my perfect niche job with a balanced mixture of communication and administration and I am very happy to be part of this organisation. A big thanks to everybody who has been involved along the way in helping me back into work! Antje Schulte-Loose Emergency Planning Project Officer, Derby City

Holiday problems abroad

Whilst on a family holiday in the Philippines, my wife Vicky, (who suffers from a complex form of Parkinson Disease and is confined to a wheelchair), developed pneumonia and had to be admitted to a hospital in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. As you can imagine, this completely turned our holiday on its head, being admitted to hospital in a foreign country is not an ideal situation. Unfortunately, because of poor information given to me by travel agents about visas, etc., I had to return home to England, leaving my wife still in hospital, being visited by her family who live locally. Paul and Vicky ended up having Vicky in the to stay in hospital for Chesterfield Carers Centre five days with her daughter being my only contact whilst I was back in England. After what seemed like an eternity to me, Vicky was finally given the all clear and discharged from hospital to her daughter’s home.

Now I was in the difficult situation of being in England and having to organise how to get her back home safely. This is where my travel insurance company stepped in and proved

6

to be invaluable. They flew me back out to the Philippines, liaising with airports, hospital and taxis, to ensure a safe, well organised journey back home for the pair of us. Thank you - Nat West Insurance! I would like to share my experience with others to try and help if they encounter similar circumstances. 1. Always take holiday insurance out and declare all disabilities and medications. 2. Always take your insurance details with you on the holiday, ie: Reference numbers, phone numbers (always take the names of people who you talk to). 3. Don’t take the travel agents word about visas. If your partner is from another country, contact the embassy concerned for the correct information. 4. If your partner (or yourself) ends up in hospital, you will need documents such as medical certificates, fit to fly forms, etc. from the hospital and information from the local doctors to pass on to your insurance company. Alway have copies made for the insurance company and for your own reference. Remember to keep copies of any medical documents, don’t leave anything to chance. If anything does go wrong whilst you are on holiday, the insurance company should sort everything out. Remember to ask for assistance for the journey back home from the airport to your home address. A wheelchairfriendly taxi makes things a lot easier! My insurance company even offered to send out a medical support team to help me get Vicky back home. Remember aeroplanes are not really disabled friendly! I have to stress you must discuss and organise all the support and assistance you need with your travel agent when you book tickets. Tell them all your full needs and hopefully your holiday will be as event-free and enjoyable as possible. Paul S. Carer

It is with great sadness that we have to inform everyone of the death of Louie Whibberley, who was one of the founder members of the Matlock Carers Group. Louie cared for her daughter Dulcie until a few months before her death and was seen with Dulcie at many events with Derbyshire Carers Association. Louie will be sadly missed by DCA, Matlock Mencap and many friends in the Darley Dale area where she lived all her life. Barbara Wright (ex Dales Area Co-ordinator)

Care100 was formed as a result of Kate spending two years looking after her disabled mother, where she quickly discovered a lack of empathy and services for the needs and requirements of elderly and disabled people. Having experienced these problems first hand, Kate and her business partner Gill decided they could ‘do it better’ and formed Care100. Inside the store is a large selection of mobility aids from simple walking sticks and eating aids, right up to the very latest in mobility aids. Featuring electric rise and recline chairs, bath lifts, rollators, mobility scooters, stairlifts and both manual and electric wheel-chairs, Care100 is the shop for accessories and mobility aids. Not forgetting plain and simple honest advice and information. Kate and Gill say if a particular item is not in stock, it can be ordered straight away. There is always a way to make things a little better or easier. The showroom on Chatsworth Road, (next to Majestic Wine Warehouse) has ample free, easy parking right outside the main entrance, with wide opening electric doors and displays on one level. Customers are made to feel very welcome and are encouraged to try out equipment for themselves for suitability. There’s absolutely no ‘hard sell’ from Kate and Gill. The emphasis is on good old fashioned honesty and service. Kate said ‘We are always very pleased to meet any of the Carers in Derbyshire and many of our customers do come in with their Carers. A warm welcome is guaranteed and if you have time for a coffee, we are more than happy to put the kettle on.’ Kate and Gill are happy to deliver products for people to try in their own home, with no obligation to purchase. They also offer free local delivery on many products. What matters most to Kate and Gill is that customers have complete peace of mind, knowing that they have received the best advice and service possible. Customer satisfaction is vital to them!
