BUENOS AIRES With a surface of 202 sq. km Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is the largest city of the country and one of the most important in South America. “The Queen of the River Plate” gained its nickname thanks to the cultural diversity conveyed by the European immigrants who arrived since the late 19th century.
As a result, Buenos Aires is the most European city of Latin America, a combination of Italian buildings, French parks, large Spanish houses that, together with the magic of tango, turned it into one of the world’s most sophisticated and exciting metropolis.
ONE-TIME PORT You can still come across the rusted remains of the port activity that once prevailed in this area of the city. The towering cranes and an immense silo stand watch over the river from the walkways, a testimony to the area’s industrial past.

THE MOST MODERN NEIGHBOUR OF BUENOS AIRES The traditional red-brick docks were recycled and turned into condominiums, offices, lofts, trendy restaurants, stores and movie theaters, now located in the western sector of the Port.

LAS NEREIDAS The sculpture by Lola Mora was considered “immoral” in 1903, because of its nude characters representing the birth of Venus. Cow Parade Hundreds of painted cows displayed on the riverside.
LOLA MORA Born in the province of Salta in 1866, Lola Mora was considered the first sculptress in South America. She received awards in France, Russia and Australia, and also dabbled in writing and research. “Las Nereidas” (The Sea Nymphs) is her most significant work.
ARCHITECTONIC CATALOGUE
STROLLING BY THE RIVER On both sides of the river there are spacious walkways ideal for long, peaceable strolls. During the day, one can stop off at one of the stalls and have an ice cream; in the evening, the high point of a romantic night on the town might be a leisurely walk by the river, with its occasional sculptures.
Since this neighbourhood was rescued from oblivion, a parade of imposing, stylish buildings have sprung up in the area. Recycled silos, modern office buildings, hotels and lofts highlight the natural riverside landscape. There are works by Philippe Starck and César Pelli, among others.
PRIVILEGED ENTRANCE On Entre Ríos is the “privileged entrance” to the Palacio del Congreso, used only on special occasions.
CONGRESO PALACIO DEL CONGRESO This breathtaking Greco-Roman Palace is the seat of the Legislative Power, where the Lower House of Representatives and the Senate operate. Its 30 thousand ton dome is one of the most beautiful in the country, and is 80 meters wide and copper coated.

Inside, the most luxurious rooms are the House of Representatives chamber, the Lost Steps Hall and the Blue Room. On Argentine national holidays, such as 25th of May and 9th of July, the lights on the buildings dome are lit enhancing its beauty even further.
ORNAMENTATION A high level of artistic ironwork can be appreciated on all the doors of its facades. Added to this are two groups of sculptures created by Lola Mora.

ART NOUVEAU The architecture of this style is obvious in many buildings in this neighbourhood built about the middle of 19th century. Auguste Rodin There are several of the Rodin’s works on display in public areas of the city.
EL PENSADOR STATUE The Plaza de los Dos Congresos has one of the two replicas made by Rodin of his famous work of art. It was purchased by Eduardo Schiaffino, director of the Museo de Bellas Artes (Beaux Arts Museum), in 1906, and prior to its current location it was erected in the Plaza Lorea.
CARROUSEL Located in the Plaza de los Dos Congresos, this is one of the few carrousels still left in the city.
EL MOLINO In 1850, two Italian pastry cooks purchased what until then had been known as the Confitería del Centro and gave it the name of Antigua Confitería del Molino (Old Mill Teahouse) because only a few metres away the first flour mill in the city once stood. The shop’s clientele belonged to the highest bourgeoisie in the city.
PLAZA DE LOS DOS CONGRESOS This enormous 7-hectare space was created in 1910 by landscaper Carlos Thays to celebrate the Centennary of the May Revolution. It has two large water fountains and games for children. In 1935, a milestone was set up in this plaza marking kilometre zero for all national roads.

HEIGHT With its 67,5 meters high, is the symbol of Buenos Aires and crowns the center of the widest avenue in the world.

OBELISCO It was built in 1936 in under sixty days in order to commemorate the Fourth Centenary of the foundation of the city. Located on the Plaza de la República and created by architect Alberto Prebisch. It was on the verge of being demolished in 1939. 30 BUENOS AIRES
Plaza de la República Before this plaza could be built, the church dedicated to San Nicolás de Bari had to be demolished.
PINK OBELISK It is often “dressed” in different colours according to the occasion. In 2005, it was tinted pink to commemorate the World Day for the Fight Against AIDS. Pedro de Mendoza The Obelisk bears an inscription in memory of the second founder of Buenos Aires.
HISTORICAL FOUNTAINS
On the boulevard squares there are European fountains, such as those located at Córdoba Ave. and Avenida de Mayo.
CELEBRATIONS Many people gather around the Obelisk to celebrate sports victories.
