As for diesel, the UK has lost its place as having the highest pump price in Europe; it still costs well above the European average, but Italy and Sweden are two of the four countries where diesel costs even more.

If you want proper services on the Urb, get on the Padron. That was the message from many Facebook users to a post concerning a lady who had fallen over on the Urbanisation and who had to wait almost an hour for an ambulance to arrive. Many people have complained about the ambulance service on the Urbanisation following changes a couple of years ago and feel frustrated that they are not being listened to at the town hall in San Fulgencio. In the post on Facebook a local attended the lady but vented their anger later on the social media site stating: “I was walking home from work today and found an elderly German lady crawling on the pavement outside her home on the Urb. I understood she had fallen whilst trying to read her meter. Another person called Bob also stopped to help with his granddaughter. Many thanks to them for helping. I called the ambulance as this lady has a pacemaker & was clearly shaken up, it was very hot & she was trembling but coherent. I rang twice & the ambulance turned up 55 minutes after the first call. The paramedics then attended to the lady. Please this highlights again that we need an ambulance service on Urb. La Marina.” One concerned resident told us that the ambulance was always stationed at La Marina Urb Police station and was kitted out by fundraising of the residents. Then, just over two years ago the Ambulance service was changed to Hospimar 2000 SL and after about 6 months it was moved and located in San Fulgencio village until it was terminated in March of this year, following which the residents association, MUNA, organised a petition for its return. In a meeting with the current Mayor, Asociacion Vecinal MUNA’s president Gilberto Diaz (who is Spanish) and Secretary George Scammell, spoke to the Mayor three weeks ago when they presented the petition to him. The Mayor stated the Ambulance will not be reinstated as it was being abused by people using it as a taxi. The resident went on to say that there have been several cases where patients have had to wait up to an hour and a half to be seen as now there are only three ambulances covering the whole stretch of the coast down to Pilar de Horadada where they were in the same predicament as San Fulgencio,

Page 3

NEW FACEBOOK HELP PAGE FOR LOCALS

but their Mayor fought their case and they have managed to retain their ambulance. The worried local also warned that “The first hour is crucial for a stroke victim. Now we have had several deaths which we cannot prove was caused by the waiting time, but it must be a factor.” It’s true that many people are still not on the Padron but are living here. Many do not understand what the Padron is for and so ignore but it is very important that people do sign on to the Padron as the number of residents in the area is reflected in funds supplied by the Valencian government. If less people are on it, an area gets less money, simple. There is NO good reason for someone living here to be ignorant of the reasons for being on the Padron or to be worried about ‘signing up for something we don’t know about’ as one resident said. And to the man who said that people who are on it think they are ‘clever’ can I just say; nobody who signs up thinks they are clever but it is certainly not a word that would describe your comments… A message from MUNA: We NEED YOR HELP AGAIN! We are NOT giving up on trying to get the Ambulance re-instated and would like your help... If you live on any of the La Marina urbanizations or San Fulgencio area and have been involved in an emergency (heart attack, stroke, serious accident/fall) where an ambulance has been called and you have had to wait over 30 mins or more. can you contact me with the following info:

La Marina Gossip Lifts A great new idea was introduced to locals in La Marina last month with the addition of the new La Marina Gossip Lifts page which aims to help locals get around by sharing lifts with other locals. The already very popular Gossip pages function very well for locals and many commented that it was a ‘great idea’ and something the area needed. The group is for people within the La Marina and San Fulgencio areas, who are willing and able to give others in the group a lift for short distances, and they emphasise that no money is to change hands. They also added, “Please be as clear as possible exactly where you want your lift from and to - this is not a taxi service; it’s ordinary members of the community giving up their time to help you. Both driver & person wanting the lift please have your mobile phone to hand (make sure it’s charged) and be willing to exchange phone numbers” We’re sure this will be a great help to many locals, good luck guys!

Approx Date. Time. Location. Waiting time from initial first call. Out come if known. MUNA will collate this information as part of our stance to try and get the Ambulance re-instated. Any information please email munaassociation@yahoo.com We have also spoken to Pilar de la Horadada Asociacion Vecina who have confirmed they DO still have their ambulance in situ.

News LA MARINA

NOT WRITE

La Marina- Sports News. Serena Williams says its o.k. to make mistakes as a mum? Cricket “DNA” under threat......... Postcards from Britain. Let me make it clear, I have nothing against Luke Martin-Jones. He may well be a good writer. However, do we in La Marina want his opinions of Donald Trump? I for one don’t and can’t see any connection or relevance for residents of La Marina. Anyway, I like Donald Trump but I am sure nobody else in La Marina could care less whether I do or don’t! If anybody is interested in Serena Williams, Donald Trump, cricket DNA or any other person or subject there are more relevant places to get information than LA MARINA NEWS. I have read your publications since 2003/4 and still consider the early editions of Jungle Drums as the best free magazines there has ever been full of relevant facts and information, tinged with your unique sense of humour. On the plus side, your article THE LAST RESORT was of interest to me with living directly opposite it and having to endure looking at the dug out underground car park and the remains of a building site since approx. 2008. However, it will be like the hotel in Los Arenales, the hotel on the N332 at the entrance to Santa Pola and the Santa Pola municipal swimming pool. Oh, I forgot to mention the golf course!! So please, let’s have more local news. I am sure there must be plenty of it. Regards DRD Hi Donald, Fair points and I accept we could put more relevant news in at times. In our defence I will say we struggle to get local info in, whether that is sport, news or what’s happening locally but we do try our very best to make it very much a local newspaper. I appreciate your praise of the Jungle Drums etc. and thank you for your support and opinion, which is highly valued. Watch this space and we’ll try our best to give readers what they want. Best regards, Dave

Hi, this a new support group I’ve put together to help my community. I’m

La Marina News

Readers Letters not a professional nor a paid charity. I’d like to spread the word .............. I’ve taken a few sections from my page for you. A couple of Sundays ago I sat and decided to form a FB group . For Women that has in the past or currently is suffering with mental illness. I’m not a professional nor a charity. With my own initiative I’m taking my own time out of the day to try and help others. When I was suffering I felt sad & lonely & suicidal, and their was no where locally to go and chat. This can be a very lonely sad time for an individual. How I want to run my Support group is Relaxed and comfortable. Through peer exchanging stories I think could help others. It can be a difficult subject to chat about but for me it’s close to my heart & I want to help others. Depression is an illness but because it’s not visual like a bleeding cut people won’t even realise your suffering. Thanks Jo.

BAR OWNERS WARNED OVER ‘ILLEGAL’ CONTRACTS

Dear LMN, I thought your readers (who own bars etc) would like to know: The organisation responsible for employment has recently been sending out advice to local bar owners, warning that they must regulate their employees work hours after many were found to be working many more hours than those stated on their contracts. Bar owners are receiving these communications from the Social Security who are trying to detect employers who declare only a few hours for their employees and they stress in the communication that owners advised to regularise their situation and they warn of increased inspections in the future. Keith. Thanks for that Keith, as you can see we’re spreading the word! Dave

Using the title ‘Spain & Me’, the book is second in a series of free ebooks sharing stories and advice from members of costawomen.com who have followed their dream and moved to Spain. Having read over 7,000 of these answers on the Costa Women profiles and met so many in person, I realise that the time of moving here can be planned or accidental, life defining, traumatic (at times) and definitely unforgettable.” Costa Women have used their experience and knowledge of life in Spain to create this telling and insightful book - a work of ‘living memory’ that tells their story to others. The town hall keeping us in the dark like mushrooms isn’t the worst issue we face; the fact that they are so out of touch with what the residents of the urbanisation want is painfully obvious, see tennis court when most people want an indoor swimming pool, heavy rock concert when the majority of residents are retirement age, a social centre that no one is allowed to use… As the primary source of income here should the town hall not be looking after its cash cow? As an example of how out of touch the town hall is, we have to ask why the fiesta is held in the market square with food and drinks being provided by San Fulgencio businesses. Isn’t our fiesta the perfect opportunity for our local businesses to boost the coffers, let’s face it, the summer months tide a lot of the bars and restaurants over the winter. Also, being on the older side, most people, if asked, would say they’d rather enjoy the entertainment whilst sitting down, having a few drinks and a meal with younger visitors wanting a sit down with a few beers whilst they watch the chil-

Keep Britain Tidy I am sure many readers will remember the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign of the 1970s and 80s. I came across an old advertisement online recently and it got me thinking about the state of the UK. I have been back in Portsmouth for a little over two months now and I am already noticing a marked difference between Spain and here. Yes I do find myself comparing the two countries all the time and why wouldn’t I. living on opposite sides of Europe has given me an insight into how these distinct nations work and function; I am amazed at the contrast. One issue that crops up again and again, not only in my mind but also in those who live and work here, is the mess, untidiness, litter and most impor-

tantly the rubbish collection! Britain is in the middle of a heatwave in case you haven’t already realised; it is hot, beyond anything I have ever experienced living in the UK. For that reason, it is necessary to keep the environment in which we live, clean and tidy, making sure that rubbish is kept to a minimum, black bags of food waste is not left littering the streets and bin collections are done as often as possible. Walking around my local neighbourhood, it is clear things are not great, all is not well, streets are dirty, rubbish left festering and wheelie bins are overflowing. Living in Spain was an eye opener where re-

fuse collection is concerned. There are no large cumbersome green bins outside peoples homes, compounded by a vast assortment of other plastic receptacles, housing recycling, all neatly sorted; in Spain, residents are actually required to take their rubbish to a large ‘Biffa Bin,’ sited at regular intervals throughout the urbanisation. I can already see the shock and horror on British peoples faces. The thought of actually transporting a bag a few meters down the road to a communal area is out of most peoples remit. The lazy attitude of many prevents a solution to Britain’s growing rubbish collection problem. In Spain, these large containers are emptied every

single day. As one walks around the streets of Gran Alacant, there is no stench from bins and bags piled up outside houses and by and large the paths, pavements and roads are kept clean and well maintained. This is in complete contrast to the UK. The smell from overflowing garbage cans, ripped black sacks and discarded food can be overwhelming. Yet local councils only collect refuse once a fortnight. This is exacerbating problems of urban pests, rats and flies as well as the uncleanliness and unhygienic conditions local people are supposed to live in. This needs to change, especially during the hot summer months. Britain and Spain have much to learn from each other. Spain had many downsides for me, but however it has the right answers for creating a commendable environment in which to live. I would ditch the wheelie bins, often causing a hazard on small, narrow pavements and follow the example of this Iberian nation and other Mediterranean countries, using a far more efficient way to collect refuse. As a country we need to rethink our current practices and remove our objections to age old issues that do nothing to help solve Britain’s current state. Until then, as residents in the UK and Spain, we all need to do our bit and keep our respective homes safe, clean, tidy and welcoming, especially during the summer season!

Fight between brothers in Elche reveals five kilos of methamphetamines in fridge One of them had a restraining order in force, and the Local Police removed several weapons from the house The Elche Local Police arrested two brothers last week who were having a very heated argument. What the agents did not imagine is that both would end up detained for a very different reason, the possession of narcotics. A Territorial Unit patrol of the Local Police went to a rural house in Carrús at around 3:00pm on the Sunday to intervene in the dispute between the brothers. Once they had arrived they saw several people at the

entrance of the house and in a separate building to the two involved in the brawl. The agents at first had to remove a carbine of compressed air and a hunting knife present in the place for safety reasons. They were informed of the existence of a restraining order in force on one of the brothers, for which he was arrested in the act. During the argument the detainee was angered even more as, in his opinion; his brother was the source of the problem prompting the agents to check the amount of drugs inside the small building where the argument started. Initially they thought that he referred to several marijuana plants that the brother had inside, claiming they were for his own use. However, the local police patrol found a whitish substance in a refrigerator indicating which both brothers denied any knowledge off.

ELCHE HOLD PROMOTION FAVOURITES Elche 0 v 0 Granada Elche returned to the Second Division with a good game in which they deserved three points against a lacklustre Granada that were somewhat unthreatening in attack and midfield. Elche returned once again to the Second Division against a Granada side who are looking for promotion but

it was the home side that impressed with a confident and steady performance for almost the whole match. In the Martínez Valero was as if Granada were the newly promoted side and Elche the ones looking for promotion most of the match they were superior and took the game to their opponents. With the energy of youth, Gonzalo Villar, was constantly causing Granada problems and was a thorn in the side of the Granada defence, full of running and with a good final ball most of the time. Crowd favourites, Sory Kaba, Josan and Javi Flores were also lively and were rock solid for the whole match and driving the team forwards. Interestingly, the one effort that should have produced a goal came from Granada in a second half in which they began to wake up. With a couple of substitutions Granada be-

Q

gan to make an impact on the game but it wasn’t enough and Elche were pleased to have held one of the promotion favourites to a decent draw.

1980, Ivan Pastor began windsurfing at only eight years old. His father Salvador (who lives in Gran Alacant), was, and is, a great fan of windsurfing, also his cousin David and his uncle Mariano set up a sailing school in Santa Pola every summer where children can learn and where he had his first contact with the sport. His father is his great supporter since he spent hours of training, trips and competitions with him and was there for his championship of Spain in which he participated as a child, at just 13 years old, while his father competed in the veterans category.
