Is it a tribute to our competitive supply chain that prices seem to have been slower to climb back up here? After all, it’s the same product everywhere, sourced on the same world markets, and we do still slap a lot of tax on top here. As for diesel, the UK has lost its place as having the highest pump price in Europe; it still costs well above the European average, but Italy and Sweden are two of the four countries where diesel costs even more.

FIVE BLUE FLAGS FOR LOCAL BEACHES

The only beach that wasn’t awarded the flag is that of El Pinet, despite the Town hall setting itself the goal of acheiving it. Five Elche beaches have once again been awarded blue flags as they did last year to show that they are top quality beaches. The local beaches are, El Altet, Arenales del Sol, El Carabassi, La Marina and El Rebollo. Despite the fact that the Elche town hall had set itself the goal of recovering it, the El Pinet beach has been omitted as it hasn’t reached the Blue Flag standard. Even so, the Elche councillor of Tourism, Mireia Mollà stated last month that important services will be retained on El Pinet beach to get this accreditation, such as first aid. Mollà pointed out that, as a new idea, they have installed some changing booths that are between El Carabassi and Arenales, so that users can change after a day at the beach to be better prepared to make the most of the beach bars and restaurants in the area. The tourism councillor also pointed out that the city has almost 10 kilometres of beach, mostly virgin, which are, along with the Fiestas de Agosto, the best tourist attraction in the region. Mollà went on to add that they have increased hotel occupancy, which in June was 78%, and that an increase is foreseen in the face of the strong summer season, so these figures will be exceeded. The same will be happening now, perhaps predictably in August during the holidays, where “it will touch 100%”.

English Tourist Complains Her Benidorm Holidays Are Ruined Because Of “Too Many Spaniards”

TAXI DRIVERS DEMAND TOWN HALLS CONTROL LICENCES

“The hotel was full of Spanish tourists and they really got on our nerves because they were very rude” . Freda Jackson, 81 years old and from Blackburn, travelled to Benidorm to spend her holidays in May and she says her memory is not a pleasant one. The English tourist complained that her two-week stay in Spain was ruined because there were “too many Spaniards” in her hotel. Mrs Jackson added that “Spaniards should go elsewhere for their holidays, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.” The tourist has mobility problems and explained that her hotel was full of “rude” Spaniards and that there was even one time

they almost knocked her down. “The hotel was full of Spanish tourists and they really got on our nerves because they were very rude,” she said. “The entertainment in the hotel was focused and attended by the Spaniards, why can’t the Spaniards go to another place for their holidays? Mrs Jackson travelled with a friend to Benidorm with the company Thomas Cook, who recommended the hotel. Both paid €1,269 and asked the travel agency for a full refund or a free holiday! The tourist has been on holiday in Greece, Turkey, Portugal and Tenerife and said that “I have never complained about a holiday before, but these were a disaster from start to finish.”

LOCAL TOWNS RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES

The Sahara wind triggers the temperatures but a drop is anticipated soon Elche registered the highest temperatures in the province of Alicante during August and has become the second hottest municipality in the Valencian Community in terms of heat. The Algorós meteorological station registered a maximum of 37.9 degrees, according to the data from the Meteoclimatic portal, a record only exceeded in the Valencian Community by Llaurí, in Valencia, with 38.6 degrees. The suffocating heat of August day has not gone unnoticed by locals with local fountains fast becoming one of the ways to combat high temperatures for residents and tourists. To the relief of many, the State Meteorology Agency expects these temperatures to drop into the high 20’s during September giving residents a welcome bit of respite. Air mass of the Sahara The province of Alicante has been experiencing some of the hottest days of the summer, with maximums of up to 37.7 degrees in La Marina and 37.8 in Gran Alacant. In addition to a humidity of between 40% and 70% (it also reached 100% on one day!) between 12 in the morning and 6pm. The heat is caused by the invasion of the Saharan air that blows into the province. Until August, the main heat had been concentrated in the interior of the province, but soon the extreme temperatures were felt strongly on the coast – as we know…phew!

MAN ASSAULTED IN A POOL IN GRAN ALACANT FOR KISSING HIS BOYFRIEND The plaintiff claims that he was bathing with his partner in the communal area when a neighbour assaulted one of them

Accident at black spot on the N-332 leaves four injured and causes delays of two hours

POLICE DISCOVER 118 AMPHETAMINE PILLS AT AIRPORT

Five vehicles involved and victims transferred to the hospital

The special unit of Dog Handlers of the National Police in Alicante has the routine job of inspection and requisition at the different terminals that make up the border at Alicante-Elche airport and the mission of the dogs along with their handlers is based on guaranteeing the security of the airport users, checking that no suspect object can alter the normal functioning of the services at the site. For greater protection and safety the Dog Handlers are sometimes accompanied by specialists in deactivation of explosives of the National Police -TEDAXand last Saturday, when one of the routine controls was carried out by the Canine Handler Unit was under way, one of the dogs found a suspect envelope. The police immediately worked in a coordinated manner with the members of the TEDAX of the Alicante National Police to rule out that it could be any type of explosive, radioactive or nuclear material, and once it was found that there was no danger the envelope was opened to discover that it was a narcotic substance, specifically 118 amphetamine pills.

An accident on the N-332, at a notorious accident black spot at the entrance to Santa Pola, left five people injured on the 14th August during the morning rush hour at around 8.45am. Because of the number of vehicles involved the emergency services had to shut the busy road and send drivers on alternative routes. The clear up meant that there were still queues on the road up to two hours later. The Guardia Civil Trafico took control at the scene, alleviating and directing traffic congestion while several ambulances worked at the scene of the accident, later transferring the four injured people to Elche hospital to be treated, although, according to emergency sources, they had no serious injuries.

Just a few days after the whole of Spain celebrated the Day of Pride for the rights of the lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual (LGBT) group they are targeted with insults and aggression that constitute a hate crime. One of these unpleasant chapters occurred last month in Gran Alacant when a neighbour in a private urbanisation was insulted and attacked for bathing in an ‘affectionate manner’ with his partner in the pool of the complex in which they reside. Fran, the victim, has given the facts to the Guardia Civil and to the Valencian Observatory against Hate Crimes for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, and has had to take leave from his work due to the injuries from the attack. The fracas took place at midnight when Fran, 44, and his boyfriend were taking a swim in the community pool in the Novamar urbanisation where he has lived for two years. At the time, they were accompanied by a group of teenagers who also enjoyed the warm summer night when, suddenly, a neighbour of the urbanisation appeared on the scene and started shouting “faggots” at them which forced them to leave the pool. The reaction of the young people was to get out of the water after the rude intrusion, according to the victim. However, things went further and the verbal violence crossed the line to physical violence. The man, tall and of a strong build, threatened the couple with a rock to get out of the water, according to the complaint. When they were leaving the area, on the edge of the pool, the aggressor hit him in the mouth with the stone and kicked his left leg and both forearms, according to the statement in the complaint that saw the Guardia Civil come and arrest the aggressor who will now face a court trial. The victim has given a statement of the facts to the Santa Pola Guardia Civil and to the Valencian Observatory against the Hate Crimes.

FAST AID

Dear Sirs, I am a citizen who usually uses the beach of Carabassi. I have noted with concern that the services contracted with the company that provides the first aid service does not meet its contractual obligations. Of course I do not know for sure if the contract I have is the last one or if there has been any modification or annex to it. For that reason I would like them to send me as urgent as possible that contract, which is public. In any way I indicate that said company (among other things) has the Jet Ski that it must have as a mandatory resource available throughout the service, it was damaged on Tuesday14/08/2018 (breakage of the cooling circuit) and until today 17/08/2018 they have not brought it back. They towed it with another watercraft (it must have been one of those that do the service, but I don’t know for sure). The contract clearly states that it must be present and available with the company, and it is not during the entire time the service is provided. Who is responsible for this negligence? When nothing happens (no incident) nobody is watching the contracts or their requirements, but do not let something happen and we have to see for ourselves in the courts for abandoning their responsibilities. Ramon Thanks Ramon, and thanks for the update stating that the Jet-Ski is now in place Dave

NOT QUITE WRITE? Hi Dave Don’t like to criticize but perhaps you can explain what the relevance of the following articles are for residents of

Readers Letters Gran Alacant:Gran Alacant - Sports News. Serena Williams says its o.k. to make mistakes as a mum? Cricket “DNA” under threat......... Postcards from Britain. Let me make it clear, I have nothing against Luke Martin-Jones. He may well be a good writer. However, do we in Gran Alacant want his opinions of Donald Trump? I for one don’t and can’t see any connection or relevance for residents of Gran Alacant. Anyway, I like Donald Trump but I am sure nobody else in Gran Alacant could care less whether I do or don’t! If anybody is interested in Serena Williams, Donald Trump, cricket DNA or any other person or subject there are more relevant places to get information than GRAN ALACANT NEWS. I have read your publications since 2003/4 and still consider the early editions of Jungle Drums as the best free magazines there has ever been full of relevant facts and information, tinged with your unique sense of humour. On the plus side, your article THE LAST RESORT was of interest to me with living directly opposite it and having to endure looking at the dug out underground car park and the remains of a building site since approx. 2008. However, it will be like the hotel in Los Arenales, the hotel on the N332 at the entrance to Santa Pola and the Santa Pola municipal swimming pool. Oh, I forgot to mention the golf course!! So please, let’s have more local news. I am sure there must be plenty of it. Regards DRD Hi Donald, Fair points and I accept we could put more relevant news in at times. In our defence I will say we struggle to get local info in, whether that is sport, news or what’s happening

COSTA WOMEN RELEASE NEW BOOK

Costa Women have just released a new book about living in Spain. Using the title ‘Spain & Me’, the book is second in a series of free ebooks sharing stories and advice from members of costawomen.com who have followed their dream and moved to Spain. It has been compiled and edited by Ali Meehan, founder of Costa Women, with chapters written by Costa Women members. Speaking about her reasons for creating the book, Ali said “Possibly the most asked and answered question between foreigners is ‘what is life really like if you live in Spain?’ And because changing countries is no small matter, the answers are often the most amazing and well rehearsed, many worthy of a book, or film alone. Having read over 7,000 of these answers on the Costa Women profiles and met so many in person, I realise that the time of moving here can be planned or accidental, life defining, traumatic (at times) and definitely unforgettable.” Costa Women have used their experience and knowledge of life in Spain to create this telling and insightful book - a work of ‘living memory’ that tells their story to others. Topics in the 14 chapters cover topics such as starting a business, life of a digital nomad, living off-grid as well as giving birth in Spain and coping with death of a family member. You can meet all the Authors at costawomen.com – a free website for Women living in, or thinking about moving to Spain. The two books are available as a free download at http://www.costawomen.com/pages/ spainandme

Guardia seizes 300 kilos of octopus in Arenales Agents carried out two inspections together with a fisheries inspector of the Generalitat

Gran Alacant News

Fight between brothers in Elche reveals five kilos of methamphetamines in fridge One of them had a restraining order in force, and the Local Police removed several weapons from the house The Elche Local Police arrested two brothers last week who were having a very heated argument. What the agents did not imagine is that both would end up detained for a very different reason, the possession of narcotics. A Territorial Unit patrol of the Local Police went to a rural house in CarrĂşs at around 3:00pm on the Sunday to intervene in the dispute between the brothers. Once they had arrived they saw several people at the

The Alicante Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) has confiscated about 300 kilos of octopus for lacking the traceability corresponding to any food product in two restaurants in Arenales del Sol. The SEPRONA patrol of the Guardia Civil in Elche carried out inspections in two restaurants located in Arenales del Sol to check whether the fish species they served had all the relevant documentation for this type of food product. The inspection was carried out together with a Fisheries Inspector of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Generalitat Valenciana. In the first restaurant, they found 266 kilos of frozen octopus in a chest freezer, of legal size, but lacking any type of documentation that proves the lawful acquisition of it and its correct sanitary status. In a second restaurant, 39 octopuses (22 kilos) were discovered, which did not reach the legal minimum weight of one kilo per unit, besides not being covered by any document that proves their legality. During the months of August through to end of November it is illegal to catch any octopus as this is their breeding season and the authorities want them to be able to recover their numbers and try and stop the illegal fishing for octopus that are undersize. Over the years it has been a major problem as traditionally locals will try and catch their own and often the smaller specimens are taken which harms the stock in the sea.

entrance of the house and in a separate building to the two involved in the brawl. The agents at first had to remove a carbine of compressed air and a hunting knife present in the place for safety reasons. They were informed of the existence of a restraining order in force on one of the brothers, for which he was arrested in the act. During the argument the detainee was angered even more as, in his opinion; his brother was the source of the problem prompting the agents to check the amount of drugs inside the small building where the argument started. Initially they thought that he referred to several marijuana plants that the brother had inside, claiming they were for his own use. However, the local police patrol found a whitish substance in a refrigerator indicating which both brothers denied any knowledge off.

Keep Britain Tidy I am sure many readers will remember the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign of the 1970s and 80s. I came across an old advertisement online recently and it got me thinking about the state of the UK. I have been back in Portsmouth for a little over two months now and I am already noticing a marked difference between Spain and here. Yes I do find myself comparing the two countries all the time and why wouldn’t I. living on opposite sides of Europe has given me an insight into how these distinct nations work and function; I am amazed at the contrast. One issue that crops up again and again, not only in my mind but also in those who live and work here, is the mess, untidiness, litter and most impor-

tantly the rubbish collection! Britain is in the middle of a heatwave in case you haven’t already realised; it is hot, beyond anything I have ever experienced living in the UK. For that reason, it is necessary to keep the environment in which we live, clean and tidy, making sure that rubbish is kept to a minimum, black bags of food waste is not left littering the streets and bin collections are done as often as possible. Walking around my local neighbourhood, it is clear things are not great, all is not well, streets are dirty, rubbish left festering and wheelie bins are overflowing. Living in Spain was an eye opener where re-

fuse collection is concerned. There are no large cumbersome green bins outside peoples homes, compounded by a vast assortment of other plastic receptacles, housing recycling, all neatly sorted; in Spain, residents are actually required to take their rubbish to a large ‘Biffa Bin,’ sited at regular intervals throughout the urbanisation. I can already see the shock and horror on British peoples faces. The thought of actually transporting a bag a few meters down the road to a communal area is out of most peoples remit. The lazy attitude of many prevents a solution to Britain’s growing rubbish collection problem. In Spain, these large containers are emptied every

single day. As one walks around the streets of Gran Alacant, there is no stench from bins and bags piled up outside houses and by and large the paths, pavements and roads are kept clean and well maintained. This is in complete contrast to the UK. The smell from overflowing garbage cans, ripped black sacks and discarded food can be overwhelming. Yet local councils only collect refuse once a fortnight. This is exacerbating problems of urban pests, rats and flies as well as the uncleanliness and unhygienic conditions local people are supposed to live in. This needs to change, especially during the hot summer months. Britain and Spain have much to learn from each other. Spain had many downsides for me, but however it has the right answers for creating a commendable environment in which to live. I would ditch the wheelie bins, often causing a hazard on small, narrow pavements and follow the example of this Iberian nation and other Mediterranean countries, using a far more efficient way to collect refuse. As a country we need to rethink our current practices and remove our objections to age old issues that do nothing to help solve Britain’s current state. Until then, as residents in the UK and Spain, we all need to do our bit and keep our respective homes safe, clean, tidy and welcoming, especially during the summer season!

Keeping cool when temperatures reach record highs isn’t just about comfort. Dangerously high temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The following tips can help you keep cool all summer long.

Gran Alacant News

KEEPING A COOL HEAD

11. I learned this trick from a tennis pro: if you’re wearing a cap or hat, remove it and pour a bit of ice cold water into the hat, then quickly invert it and place on your head. 12. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration.

1. Alter your pattern of outdoor exercise to take advantage of cooler times (early morning or late evening). If you can’t change the time of your workout, scale it down by doing fewer minutes, walking instead of running, or decreasing your level of exertion.

13. Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won’t have to cook next to a hot stove.

2. Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light colour. 3. Cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many synthetics. 4. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors. 5. Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house. 6. Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet. 7. Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you’re ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you’ll have a supply of cold water with you. 8. Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water. 9. Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes.

BAR

14. If you don’t have air-conditioning, arrange to spend at least parts of the day in a shopping mall, public library, movie theatre, or other public space that is cool. Many cities have cooling centres that are open to the public on sweltering days. 15. Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don’t forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heat-related illnesses too.

SPORTS REPORT

ELCHE HOLD PROMOTION FAVOURITES Elche 0 v 0 Granada Elche returned to the Second Division with a good game in which they deserved three points against a lacklustre Granada that were somewhat unthreatening in attack and midfield. Elche returned once again to the Second Division against a Granada side who are looking for promotion but

it was the home side that impressed with a confident and steady performance for almost the whole match. In the Martínez Valero was as if Granada were the newly promoted side and Elche the ones looking for promotion most of the match they were superior and took the game to their opponents. With the energy of youth, Gonzalo Villar, was constantly causing Granada problems and was a thorn in the side of the Granada defence, full of running and with a good final ball most of the time. Crowd favourites, Sory Kaba, Josan and Javi Flores were also lively and were rock solid for the whole match and driving the team forwards. Interestingly, the one effort that should have produced a goal came from Granada in a second half in which they began to wake up. With a couple of substitutions Granada be-

gan to make an impact on the game but it wasn’t enough and Elche were pleased to have held one of the promotion favourites to a decent draw.

1980, Ivan Pastor began windsurfing at only eight years old. His father Salvador (who lives in Gran Alacant), was, and is, a great fan of windsurfing, also his cousin David and his uncle Mariano set up a sailing school in Santa Pola every summer where children can learn and where he had his first contact with the sport. His father is his great supporter since he spent hours of training, trips and competitions with him and was there for his championship of Spain in which he participated as a child, at just 13 years old, while his father competed in the veterans category.
