▶ COMIN’ IN HOT The Big Green enter the two-game slate as one of only two teams in the country not to have a loss to its credit in 2012-13. Wins over Yale (74) and Brown (2-1) have the team at 3-0-1 and sitting tied atop the ECAC Hockey standings along with Union at 2-0-0 in league play. The sweep of the Bulldogs and Bears also has Dartmouth ranked ahead of five other teams in the Ivy League campaign. ▶ MR. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER Junior Eric Robinson has started the season on a tear with five goals in the first four games for a nation-leading 1.25 goals per contest. His goals have also come at just the right time as he has three game winners (also good for tops in the country) and a game-tying goal. His scoring has been the difference this year in all four of Dartmouth’s outings. His three powerplay markers are also the second most in the country to this point. ▶ WEEKLY HONOR Robinson was tabbed as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after

his strong four-point weekend. He became the first Dartmouth player to receive the conference’s top weekly honor since Dustin Walsh was named the recipient last November following a Dartmouth sweep of Quinnipiac and Princeton in the league-opening weekend.

▶ SIKURA LEADS AGAIN After a freshman season that saw him tie Doug Jones for the team lead in scoring with 25 points (11g/14a), Tyler Sikura has continued to elevate his game as a sophomore in 2012-13. Sikura has a team-leading seven points on three goals and four helpers. His 1.75 points per game rank fifth in the nation, while his 1.0 assists per clip are eighth. ▶ YOU LIKE NUMBERS? Following Cornell’s tie with Colgate, no team in the country remained with only wins to its credit, meaning that computer polls could come into play. The polls are published to try and mimic the formula used by the NCAA Selection Committee in determining the 16team national tournament. In all three systems (PairWise, RPI, KRACH), Dartmouth was listed as the top team, something that means almost nothing at this point in the season.

▶ IN THE POLLS With the sweep of Yale and Brown and a 3-01 record to their credit, the Big Green made another improvement in the national polls this week. Although still on the outside looking in, Dartmouth went from 15 votes in last week’s USCHO poll to 102 and rank as the highest rated

team outside this week’s Top 20. Providence is the next closest team with 35 votes. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings, the Green and White went from no votes after the Ivy Shootout to nine when the most recent poll was released Monday afternoon. ▶ THREE’S COMPANY Sikura, Robinson and junior Matt Lindblad each netted a pair of goals in Friday night’s win vs. Yale. The last time three Dartmouth players scored two or more goals each in a single game was a 9-1 win against Holy Cross on Nov. 20, 2001. In that game, Kent Gillings (2-1-3), Chris Baldwin (2-2-4) and Trevor Byrne (2-1-3) put on an offensive display that was not matched for more than a decade. More impressive was that all six of those goals were scored at even strength. ▶ LUCKY LINDBLAD The junior and Winnetka, Ill., native scored two goals in the game’s opening 6:33. His first of the season came 3:27 into the opening period, while his second more just slightly more than three minutes later. Between the two Lindblad markers, each team scored for four goals in the contest’s opening few minutes.

games before Sikura scored a shorty 13:09 into the third period against Yale. Beamish ended up with two shorthanded markers last season, the only two of the year for the Green. ▶ LUCKY NUMBER 47 The last time Dartmouth had scored seven or more goals in a game prior to the contest with the Elis came back on Jan. 29, 2011 when it defeated Colgate, 7-3, at Thompson Arena. It had been 47 games since the Big Green offense had proved to be as potent on any given night. Dartmouth also snapped a 47-game stretch without a shutout the game prior when it knocked off Brown, 4-0, in Providence. ▶ THAT’S A GOOD PROBLEM… Last week, a lot of attention was focused on the play of freshman goaltender Charles Grant after he posted a shutout in his first career start against Brown (Oct. 27). But the strong start to the season by junior Cab Morris should not be overlooked. Grant was given the nod against Yale on Friday, making 35 saves, while allowing four goals. Morris started the next night and stopped 24 shots while picking up the defensiveoriented 2-1 win against Brown. Through two games apiece, here is how they match up:

▶ POINT STREAKS Sikura and Robinson remain the only two players on the team to register points in all four games this season. Last year, Sikura’s longest stretch of games with a point was three, while Robinson twice had four-game scoring streaks. Lindblad had points in each of the first three games before being held off the scoresheet against the Bears.

▶ SHORTY The first shorthanded goal of the 2011-12 season came when Jesse Beamish capped off a 4-1 win against Sacred Heart with the mandown tally at the 17:12 mark of the third period on Dec. 11. That was the 11th game of the year for the Big Green.This season, it took just three

▶ RENSSELAER AND UNION • NOV. 9-10, 2012 • THOMPSON ARENA ▶ OPEN LEAGUE PLAY AT HOME For the second season in a row, Dartmouth swept its ECAC Hockey home-opening weekend after knocking off Quinnipiac, 5-4, and Princeton, 5-3, to start 2011-12. The Big Green also accomplished the feat in 2008-09 when they beat St. Lawrence in overtime, 4-3, before taking out Clarkson, 5-1, on Saturday. ▶ CAREER NIGHT Sophomore Eric Neiley matched his career high with three points, all assists, against Yale. The Warminster, Pa., native set up Lindblad, Robinson and Sikura on the night, including causing a turnover at center ice that led to the final goal of the game. Twice as a freshman Neiley had three-point outings as both were one-goal, two-assist efforts. ▶ 35 OR MORE Grant stopped 35 shots in his home debut against the Bulldogs. The last time a Dartmouth freshman goalie made 35 or more saves in a game was Jody O’Neill on Dec. 7, 2009, when he registered 41 in a 3-1 loss in New Haven also against Yale. O’Neill was also the last goalie to accomplish the feat in a victory, stopping 41 at Princeton on Jan. 9, 2009 en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Tigers. ▶ BACK IN THE GAME After missing much of last season, senior alternate captain Dustin Walsh was back in the Big Green lineup last weekend. The 2009 Montreal Canadiens draft pick wasted little time in returning to his old form, picking up an assist on Lindblad’s second goal just 6:33 into his first appearance of the year against Yale.

SPECIAL TEAMS STATS - Dartmouth is the second least penalized team in the country through its first four games at 8.5 PIMs per contest. A disciplined group, the Big Green also possesses a strong penalty killing unit when playing a man down. In 15 penalty kill situations this season, the Green and White have been successful 14 times for 93.3%; good for fourth in the nation and third in ECAC Hockey. - The power play has also been a strength through two weeks of play, scoring on 4-of-17 chances (23.3%) to rank 11th in the country. It took Dartmouth until Jan. 6 last season before it was able to score its fourth PPG of the year.

▶ AGAINST RPI The Engineers have enjoyed recent successes in Hanover over the last few years, having won five of the last seven meetings at Thompson, including a two-game sweep in the 2009 ECAC Hockey quarterfinals. The two teams split last season’s series with each winning in the other’s building. The last meeting came back on Feb. 11 with RPI edging out the Green, 2-1. Dartmouth won its game in Troy, 4-3, in a contest seen nationally on the NBC Sports Network. ▶ AGAINST UNION The Dutchmen won both games against the Big Green last year, taking the meet in Schenectady, 7-1, and in Hanover, 5-1. Dartmouth still leads the all-time series, 23-17-6, but has just three wins since the start of the 2008-09 season. The last time the Big Green skated to a 0-0 tie with any opponent was against Union on Nov. 6, 2010 at Thompson Arena.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81 Now in his 16th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last two seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 15 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2012-13 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 219 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .507 winning percentage (219-212-54) is the third-best mark at Dartmouth as well. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-132 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 219-212-54 (Entering this year). The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth

its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year Award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East Team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East Team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the EastWest Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Kelly will be a senior at Hanover High School in 2012-13 where she is the starting goalie and co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team.

▶ LATE-GAME HEROICS Junior Eric Robinson was back to his old ways of a year ago and leads the team in goals through two games. His first of the year came on the power play late in the contest with Yale. Onetiming home a pretty pass from sophomore Tyler Sikura, Robinson tied the game with just 3:04 remaining. Sikura and classmate Eric Neiley beat the Bulldogs’ Nick Maricic in the shootout to help their team advance. ▶ GOALIES GALORE Known for strong goalies the last four years, the Big Green aren’t as battle tested at the position this year. At least that’s what people thought until this the first two weekends. Junior Cab Morris stopped 18 shots and came up with a key save in the shootout Friday against Yale. Freshman Charles Grant followed up with a 24-save shutout Saturday night against the host Bears for the team’s first win of 2012-13.

▶ GREAT START Grant became the first Dartmouth goalie since Wesley Goding ’39 to record a shutout in his first career appearance. Goding accomplished the feat on Dec. 12, 1936 against Columbia in a 9-0 win. There is no record of how many saves Goding had to make to earn the shutout, but like Grant, it also came in the second game of the season (1936-37).

▶ FRESHMEN JUMP UP Both Tim O’Brien and Brett Patterson had a productive first weekend in Dartmouth sweaters while in Providence. O’Brien opened up the season scoring less than three minutes into the game with Yale as he beat Maricic with a laser shot coming down the right side of the ice. Not as pretty, but equally as impressive in his determination to score, Patterson pokechecked a loose puck off a Brown defender’s stick and into an open netmouth through a scrum in front.

▶ START ME UP O’Brien became the first Dartmouth freshman to score the team’s first goal of a season since Evan Stephens did it on Oct. 28, 2007 at Vermont 3:19 into the second period to open 2007-08. Stephens had some freshman help with assists from classmates Adam Estoclet and Matt Reber. ▶ SIKURA SCREENS Originally credited to junior defenseman Taylor Boldt, Dartmouth’s third goal against Brown was eventually awarded to sophomore center Tyler Sikura with a redirect in the low slot. The goal was his first of the year, but was nearly the exact same play that he scored on McGill during the preseason.

the job, beating Union on the road, 4-0, on Nov. 8, 1997. ▶ MOVE HIM TO MEEHAN Robinson has proven himself over the last two seasons to be a formidable scoring threat for the Big Green. But if he were to don the colors of Brown, the Foxborough, Mass., native might be the top player in the league.That second part might not be true, but Robinson certainly does enjoy playing at Meehan Auditorium. Including last weekend, the junior wing now has four goals in his last three games at Brown’s home rink. He scored in each of the season’s first two contests and had a two-goal game in the Bears’ home finale on Feb. 18, 2011. ▶ FAMILIAR FOES ARE NOTHING NEW After this weekend, the last nine meaningful games dating back to the end of last season have come against just four opponents. St. Lawrence came to Hanover for the regular season finale in 2011-12 before Dartmouth went to Canton the following weekend to pick up the twogame sweep. A two-game swing to Cornell for the next round was the last of the year for Dartmouth. However, the team picked right back up where it left off with games against Yale and Brown in consecutive weekends to open 2012-13. ▶ COMING BACK Fans of the Big Green know senior forward Dustin Walsh and the superb talents he posses. But, fans around the league will hopefully get a glimpse of the Montreal Canadiens draft pick this weekend in a return to the lineup. Walsh has been out since last January, recovering from a lower-body injury. Having missed the team’s last 21 games dating back to Jan. 7 of last year through last weekend in Providence, Walsh’s scoring touch would be a welcome addition back into an already skilled forward group. In just eight games in 2011-12, Walsh had 10 points, good for an impressive 1.25 points per game. ▶ BAY STATE LINE Despite not scoring a goal together at Meehan, the line of Massachusetts natives Robinson, sophomore Brandon McNally and Nick Bligh was buzzing. Robinson scored twice on the power-play unit, while McNally and Bligh combined for several scoring chances through the first four periods of the weekend. ▶ FOURTH LINE FINESSE Rather than the traditional grinding fourth line, Coach Gaudet and his staff opted for a skilled group of freshman forwards to make up the fourth combination against the Bulldogs and Bears. O’Brien joined Jack Barre and center Connor Dempsey as a group that showed several times their ability to get pucks on goal and create offensive opportunities. ▶ THE BIG GREEN ARE BIG AGAIN This year’s team will be one of the largest Dartmouth squads in recent memory, earning

The collection of 28 players average just shy of 6-foot-1 in height and right at 200 pounds in weight, proving to be one of the largest teams in ECAC Hockey. ▶ SKILLED SOPHOMORES At the end of the 2011-12 regular season, no other freshman class in the league had accumulated as many goals as Dartmouth’s first-year players in league contests. The seven players combined for a total of 25 goals in the 22 ECAC Hockey games. Leading the way was Brandon McNally, a player that scored all 10 of his goals against conference foes, a figure that led the league. In the four postseason games, the then-freshman class also posted impressive numbers, totaling four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. ▶ NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING Freshman Nick Bligh was the lone ECAC Hockey representative and just one of 10 NCAA student-athletes to be featured on NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary List for the 2013 Entry Draft. The list is comprised of players from the major junior leagues across the continent, high schools and colleges that are eligible for the upcoming draft entering the 2012-13 season. Once completed the list is sent to NHL team scouts for the purpose of tracking those top prospects throughout the course of the year. A product of the South Shore Kings (EJHL), Bligh scored 22 goals and had 65 assists for 85 points in his lone season of juniors (43 games), helping him earn an invite to the Winnipeg Jets Development Camp this summer. . ▶ RETURNING SCORERS No other team in ECAC Hockey will have as many returning forwards that have scored 10 or more goals in a season during their career than Dartmouth’s five this year. Robinson, Sikura and McNally all reached double-digit goal figures in 2011-12, while Lindblad and senior Dustin Walsh each did so the year before. As a freshman, Lindblad netted 13 in 2010-11 with Walsh scoring 10 that season as well. Princeton also has five players coming back with 10 goals or more in a season, but that figure also includes defenseman Michael Sdao.
