SCHEDULE

October | 1-0-0

THIS WEKEEND The Dartmouth men’s hockey team heads out on the road for a pair of ECAC hockey games this weekend against Colgate and Cornell.

LAST TIME OUT The Big Green are coming off a two-loss home weekend against Yale and Brown. The Bulldogs bullied the home team to the tune of a 7-0 win on Friday, while the Bears won their first game in Hanover in nine years with a 4-3 overtime win the next night.

CREMA CLEANS UP Thanks to his league-leading four goals and five points, senior Troy Crema was tabbed as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Crema scores two goals against both Harvard and Brown, while adding an assist versus the Bears. -.Crema is tied for the ECAC Hockey lead in scoring this month with 10 points with a league-leading seven goals in January. - This is the first weekly honor of 2016-17 for the Big Green.

SCOUTING COLGATE -.The Raiders are 5-13-5 entering the weekend with a league record of 3-6-2 for eight points, just two back of the Big Green. -.A 3-2 comeback win against Clarkson at home last Saturday was the first win for Colgate since a Dec. 3 game at Arizona State, snapping a 0-4-1 stretch that included a pair of losses in Hanover during the Ledyard Classic. -.Jake Kulevich is the team’s leading scorer with 14 points as well as leading the team in assists with 11. Calgary draft pick and senior Tim Harrison is tied with three other players for second with 12 points, while his eight goals are the most by any player on the roster this season.

SCOUTING CORNELL -.The Big Red come into the weekend with a 12-4-2 overall record and a 7-2-2 mark in ECAC Hockey, placing them fifth in the league standings, one point back of Quinnipiac for the last first-round bye. - Cornell is currently No. 14 in both national polls. -.Mitch Vanderlaan leads the team in goals (9) and points (17), while Patrick McCarron is the team’s assist leader (13). -.Senior Mitch Gillam has played in and started all but one game this season, posting a 12-3-2 record to go along with a league-leading 2.05 goals against average and a .919 save percentage that ranks fourth. -.Cornell has allowed just 36 goals against this season, the fewest in the nation. -.The Big Red have played just 6 home games thus far, the fewest of any team in the nation. They are 4-1-1 in those contests.

AGAINST THESE TEAMS -.Cornell’s Mitch Vanderlaan remains the only player to score a shorthanded goal in a Dartmouth game this season as he notched Cornell’s only goal of its Nov. 4 matchup in Hanover at 2:26 of the third period. Corey Kalk’s first of the season just over two minutes later tied the game at 1-1, a score that would stand through 65 minutes of action. -.Devin Buffalo’s first career hat trick came against Colgate on Nov. 5 as the junior stopped 21 shots in a 2-0 win at Thompson. Troy Crema broke a scoreless tie with 2:16 left in regulation and captain Carl Hesler hit the empty net in the final minute to ice the victory.

HIGHS AND LOWS Dartmouth’s eight goals against Harvard are the most scored in a game this year by an ECAC hockey program in a conference game. Unfortunately, the seven-goal loss to Yale in the ensuing game is the most lopsided loss of the season for any team in league play in 2016-17 as well.

BIG WEEKS FOR BLANKS Freshman Ryan Blankemeier scored the first goal of his career and added an assist for the first multi-point effort in Dartmouth’s 8-4 win against the Crimson. He then notched his second career goal to open the scoring against the Bears for his second goal of the three-game homestand.

OVERTIME RESULTS -.Dartmouth had played three OT games prior to the Brown game. In all three instances, the Big Green played to a draw. -.It had been more than two years since Dartmouth had last lost a game in the fourth period since Dec. 5, 2014 at Quinnipiac (2-1). -.The Big Green had gone 11 OT games without a loss since that QU defeat (4-0-7). -.Prior to Saturday’s game with Brown, the last time Dartmouth lost a home game in OT was Mar. 6, 2009 vs. RPI in Game 1 of the first-round series, a stretch of 17 games in which the program went 5-0-12.

CELEBRATING HISTORY Cornell will be honoring members of its 1967 national championship team this weekend as part of a 50th anniversary celebration: -.The Big Red’s first of two national titles was the result of a 27-1-1 season in 1966-67. -.Two of those victories came at the expense of the Big Green as Cornell won the game in Hanover on Feb. 11, 7-0, and then against in Ithaca, 6-1, two weeks later. -.Hall of Famer Ken Dryden backstopped the Red to a title in his first season with the team. Dryden will be on-hand Saturday night as Cornell will honor the returning members of that team between the first and second periods.

NEW RINKS -.Friday night will see the Big Green play in Colgate’s new Class of 1965 Arena for the first time after five decades at Starr Rink. -.It’s the second time this season that Dartmouth has played in the home arena of an opponent for the first time after playing at the Robert Morris’s Island Sports Center back in November. - .It is the third new rink of 2016-17 if one takes into account Dartmouth playing Robert Morris the second night at PPG Paints Arena — the home of the NHL’s Penguins — in downtown Pittsburgh the following afternoon.

LATE GOALS Dartmouth has scored three goals in the final two minutes of the third period this season with the opposition’s netminder still between the pipes. In all three instances, the game was played at home and Crema has been the one to score the goal. - Michigan (10.29) / 19:11 (EV) - Quinnipiac (1.7) / 19:49.2 (PP/EX) - Brown (1.21) / 18:27 (EX)

WHAT’S AHEAD? The Big Green are on the road for one game next week, playing at Harvard on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. They return to Thompson next on Feb. 10-11 to host RPI and Union.

FOUR FIRSTS -.Three players scored their first career goals in the Harvard win: Shane Sellar, Ryan Blankemeier and Charley Michalowski. Sellar and Blankemeier each scored in the four-goal second period for Dartmouth, while Michalowski’s came into the empty net for the eighth and final Big Green goal. -.After having his initial goal changed to Troy Crema at Rensselaer, sophomore defenseman Connor Yau finally found the back of the cage on a point shot 3:08 into the third period against the Crimson for his first of the season.

ANOTHER FIRST Freshman goalie Adrian Clark came into Tuesday’s game midway through the second period and finished the night with 14 saves and without allowing a goal. For his efforts and thanks to the five straight Dartmouth goals to end the game, Clark was credited with the first win of his collegiate career.

OPPS… HE DID IT AGAIN Grant Opperman built on the strength of his two-goal game at RPI with his third in two outings, scoring the eventual game winner with just 51.5 seconds to play in the second period against Harvard. For the Minnesota native and senior alternate captain, the score was his fourth of the year.

CREMA CONTINUES -.Troy Crema followed up his third career two-goal game on Saturday night with the fourth on Tuesday. Crema score the first and seventh goals, notching his ninth of the season late in the first period and depositing his 10th into the empty net in the final minute of regulation. - .Crema leads all ECAC Hockey players with five goals in January and is tied for the lead in scoring with seven points.

THREE-POINT NIGHTS -.For the second time this season, the Big Green saw a pair of players record three points in the same game. After Crema (21-3) and Corey Kalk (1-2-3) accomplished the feat in the second game at Robert Morris, Will Graber (0-3-3) and Sellar (1-2-3) matched it against the Crimson. -.Graber’s three assists in a game are the most this year by any Big Green player, as two assists have been accomplished 12 times, including three on Tuesday.

CARL? WHERE’D YOU GO?

DARTMOUTHHOCKEY

After playing in the first 85 games of his Big Green career without being scratched, junior captain Carl Hesler missed the Harvard game with an upper-body injury. He is expected to be back next weekend.

BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th SEASON AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
