Army West Point is making its first trip to Hanover for the tournament since 2008, the longest stretch for any of the three without playing in the holiday tournament. The River Hawks made their third appearance the following season, falling in the 2009 title game. Colgate’s lone appearance came the next year, losing a pair of games to BC and Dartmouth. WINNING AGAIN With Dartmouth’s win in last season’s Ledyard Classic, the Big Green snapped a seven-year drought without a tournament title. The 2008 Ledyard marked the last time the home team won the championship, beating Bemidji State, 4-2, that year. Dartmouth moved ahead of Vermont in terms of total team titles with last year’s victory, earning their seventh championship.

MR. 900! -.The second game of the weekend against either UMass Lowell or Colgate will mark the 900th career game as a head coach for Bob Gaudet. In 29 seasons behind the bench between Dartmouth (632) and Brown (266), the Dartmouth head coach and member of the Class of 1981 enters the Ledyard Classic with 898 games to his credit. -.Gaudet is already the program’s all-time leader in games coached, passing the legendary Eddie Jeremiah ’28. FIVE AGAIN FROM THE SAME GUYS The five goals scored against UNH tied the Big Green’s season-high previously reached against Robert Morris in Pittsburgh on Nov. 27. John Ernsting, Daniel Warpecha and Tory Crema (2 vs. RMU) all scored in both contests.

FIRST AGAIN For the second straight year, Grant Opperman scored his first goal of the season against the Wildcats. The senior and alternate captain finally broke through with a power-play goal early in the third period for his first tally of 2016-17 to give Dartmouth a 4-0 lead. Last year, it was a first-period goal on the power play when the Green were trailing 4-0 that helped the Minnesota native to finally notch his first of the season. Both games were the 11th of the year for Dartmouth and came just one calendar day apart (Dec. 11, 2015 vs. Dec. 10, 2016).

BUFFALO STARTER -.Devin Buffalo has made 11 straight starts in goal this season, the most to begin a campaign since Mike Devine ’08 started the first 17 games of 2006-07. -.James Kruger ’16 was the last Dartmouth goalie to reach double-digits for consecutive starts to open a season, doing so in 10 straight to begin the 2014-15 year as a junior. -.The last Big Green netminder to start in 11 straight was Charles Grant ’15, doing so in both 2013-14 and last season. STRANGE CONNECTIONS All four of this year’s Ledyard teams have some connection based on last season (some are stronger than others). ARMY WEST POINT: -.The Big Green and Black Knights both wore patched honoring longtime Army head coach and former Dartmouth player Jack Riley ’44 who died at the age of 95 last February. Both teams wore patches to honor the US Hockey Hall of Famer and reached the semifinals of their respective conference tournaments. Dartmouth continues to wear the patches this season. -.A former Brown center, current Army head coach Brian Riley (son of Jack Riley) scored a goal against Dartmouth head coach and former goaltender Bob Gaudet on Valentine’s Day in 1981. Gaudet would turn aside 21 shots in the game and go on to post the 8-4 win. COLGATE -.The Raiders and Big Green have met in each of the last two postseasons with each eliminating the other. Colgate swept Dartmouth in the 2015 ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals in Hamilton, while the Green and White needed a double-overtime goal from Tim O’Brien in Game 3 of last year’s first round to dispatch the Raiders. -.In an odd scheduling quirk, coupled with a three-game postseason series against one another, Dartmouth and Colgate are on the verge of something that’s never happened before in program history. If the two teams were to play each other on the second day of the Ledyard, it would be the sixth straight meeting between the Big Green and Raiders to take place in Hanover. A regular season game last year, followed by the first-round series and then a 2-0 Dartmouth win earlier this year as the two teams playing five straight at Thompson Arena, matching only a stretch of five games at home against Harvard for the Green and White. Dartmouth has never played a conference opponent six consecutive times in Hanover. UMASS LOWELL -.Dartmouth eliminated Yale from the ECAC Hockey Championship with a two-game sweep of the quarterfinal series last March in New Haven. The Bulldogs would have to wait two weeks to play again, doing so against the River Hawks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Lowell would defeat the Bulldogs, 3-2, in overtime before falling, 4-1, to Quinnipiac in the East Regional Final. Quinnipiac also ended Dartmouth’s season with a 3-1 win in the league semifinals played in Lake Placid. -.It’s been almost exactly 14 years since the Big Green last scored 10 goals in a game, doing so against UML at Thompson Arena on Dec. 29, 2002. In that 10-2 win, Hugh Jessiman ’06 scored four goals, while Lee Stempniak ’05 dished out five assists. FIRST FOR HAN AND THE DEFENSE Clay Han became the first Dartmouth defenseman to score a goal this season when he hit the back of the empty net against UNH with 1:47 remaining in the game. It was the first goal and point of the rookie’s career.

DARTMOUTHHOCKEY

UNBEATEN AT HOME With the win against the Wildcats, Dartmouth pushed its home record to 3-0-1 this season. The Big Green and Harvard (3-0-1) remain the only teams in the nation without a home loss this season, while their .875 winning percentage on home ice trails only Penn State (.917 / 11-1-0).

HEALTHY… MAYBE Dartmouth played the Wildcats with just 18 healthy skaters and three goalies. All six scratches that night were due to injuries. However, Alex Jasiek (1-2—3) and Corey Kalk (3-3—6) are expected to return to the lineup for the Ledyard Classic. WHAT’S AHEAD? The Big Green will continue their five-game homestand with a pair of league tilts at Thompson next weekend, playing host to Princeton and Quinnipiac in the first contests of 2017.

BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th SEASON AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
