GAME NOTES THIS WEEKEND The Dartmouth men’s hockey team will host ECAC Hockey foes Princeton and No. 15 Quinnipiac this weekend at Thompson Arena. The pair of games will close out a five-game homestand of sorts as the Big Green have not played a road contest since Dec. 3. LAST TIME OUT Dartmouth is coming off a 0-1-1 weekend at the Ledyard Classic with a 2-2 tie against Army and a 7-4 loss in the championship game to No. 7 UMass Lowell. Although it goes down in the official record books as a 2-2 draw with the Cadets, the Green and White advanced to the tournament’s title tilt with a 1-0 shootout victory thanks to a goal from junior Corey Kalk and three stops from netminder Devin Buffalo. The following evening saw the home team battle, before eventually falling as the River Hawks broke the tie in the third and added a pair of late empty-net goals. SCOUTING PRINCETON Few teams are as hot as the Princeton Tigers are right now. Or at least were heading into the holiday break. The Tigers won seven-of-nine before dispersing for the mid-season interval. Included in that stretch was a two-game sweep of travel partner Quinnipiac, a sweep of Bemidji State on the road, an OT win against RPI and a split with Minnesota State. As part of that run, sophomore Max Veronneau (6-10—16) was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Month, while freshman Jack Cressey (3-9—12) was tabbed as the conference’s top rookie in December. Overall, Princeton is 7-8-1 with a 3-6-1 mark in conference games. SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC Like the Big Green, the Bobcats also played in a holiday tournament. Quinnipiac went out to Pittsburgh for the Three Rivers Classic at PPG Paints Arena, defeating Boston College, 3-1, in a rematch of last year’s Frozen Four semifinal, but fell, 5-2,

to the hosts from Robert Morris in the championship. The once-mighty Bobcats are in the midst of a mid-season drought — thanks in large part to a trip to Northern Ireland and a sweep at the hands of Princeton — and have fallen to 15th in the national polls following a 2-4-1 stretch in the last seven dating back to late November. QU is 11-8-2 overall and is third in ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-4-1 league mark.

AGAINST THESE TEAMS Dartmouth was dealt a 6-3 loss in Hamden on Nov. 11 on the strength of Quinnipiac’s 3-for-9 showing on the power play. Buffalo made a career-high 48 saves as the Bobcats outshot the Big Green, 54-24. The following night in Princeton saw the Tigers come back to force a 2-2 tie. Dartmouth’s defense played nearly two-thirds of the game with just four skaters as Clay Han left early with an injury and Josh Hartley was given a game misconduct near the start of the second period. NO JINXING, PLEASE! There has been a great level of success against Princeton at Thompson Arena recently. The Big Green are currently in the midst of a seven-game home unbeaten streak against the Tigers dating back to a 5-3 loss on Jan. 30, 2010. Since that defeat, Dartmouth is 6-0-1 against its Ivy rivals from New Jersey, including five straight wins. FIRSTS! Han netted his second goal of the season in the middle frame against UML last Saturday night. Since his first goal came against UNH with the netminder pulled, this most recent tally marked Dartmouth’s first by a defender against an opposing team’s netminder all season. That figure ballooned to two as sophomore Cam Roth notched the first goal of his career just 41 seconds later to help pull the home team even, 3-3. BACK AT IT IN THE IVY LEAGUE Friday’s game will mark just the third against an Ivy League opponent this season. Dartmouth is 0-0-2 in those games with the aforementioned 2-2 tie with Princeton and a 1-1 draw against Cornell in just the second contest of the season on Nov. 4. HAPPIER AT HOME The Big Green were without a home loss in their first five home games of 2016-17. That 3-0-2 stretch to start the season ended with the loss to UMass Lowell. The last team to beat Dartmouth in Thompson Arena was Colgate in Game 2 of last year’s first-round series. Since then, though, the Raiders have lost four straight in Hanover.

ROOKIE LEADERS -.Thanks to his two goals against UMass Lowell, freshman Daniel Warpecha finished with an ECAC Hockey-leading four goals in the month of December. -.In fact, no other team got more goals from its rookie class than the eight notched by the Big Green freshman. Princeton — Friday’s opponent — was the next closest with five. Brown, Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, St. Lawrence and Quinnipiac — Saturday’s opponent— each had just one goal from their rookies in the final month of 2016. -.Dartmouth was fourth nationally in the month in goals tallied by freshmen, trailing only Maine (12), Army West Point (10) and Alaska (9) and tied with Minnesota State (8).

THAT WAS FAST! Only twice this season has Dartmouth scored two goals in less than a minute and both of them came in the Ledyard Classic. -.Corey Kalk (17:23) and Cam Strong (18:09) netted the lone two goals of the game for the home team just 46 seconds apart in the second period on Friday night. -.That time for the fastest two goals lasted less than 24 hours as Han (9:45) and Roth (10:26) bested it by seconds with a pair just 41 seconds apart.

THE THING ABOUT HAT TRICKS Dartmouth has allowed two hat tricks against this year with several odd connections between the two instances. -.Both came against teams ranked No. 7 at the time: Quinnipiac (Nov. 11) and UMass Lowell (Dec. 31). -.Both were to players whose last name is Smith: Landon (Quinnipiac) and C.J. (UML). -.Those two players faced off against one another in the NCAA Tournament last season: Quinnipiac defeated UML, 4-1, in the East Regional Final. (Landon Smith scored in the game)

“RED-HOT” POWER PLAY Dartmouth was 0-for-43 on the power play in the first seven games of the season, culminating in an 0-for-3 night at Robert Morris. In the six games since, starting with the second Robert Morris game on Nov. 27, the Big Green are 5-for-24 (20.8%), including goals with the man-advantage in each of the last three games.

FRIENDLY REMINDER The Dartmouth Athletics Department and men’s hockey program ask for your cooperation on Friday night. Please refrain from throwing items onto the ice that can injure student-athletes from either team. Also, any items (including tennis balls) thrown on the ice after Dartmouth’s second goal, or subsequent goals, can result in penalties against the Big Green.

WHAT’S AHEAD? Dartmouth will head to New York’s Capital Region next week to take on 10th-ranked Union on Friday night in Schenectady and Rensselaer in Troy the following evening.

BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th SEASON AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
